this is how it continued
———
This is how it ends.
———
This is how it ends.
———
This is how it ends.
———
This is how it ends.
———
Lance tries for weeks to make it end.
The words crawl up like bile in the back of his throat. Keith, he tries to say, time and time again, we need to talk. And when he manages to push through the stinging burn and say them, breath turning to dust in his lungs, Keith crooks his finger under Lance’s chin and meets Lance’s eyes and replies, just as quietly, Of course, sweetheart. What’s wrong?
And every time Lance is faced with the softness in his dark eyes, the steady way he holds his gaze. And every time something inside him cracks, desperate and howling and selfish after being deprived so long, and his bravery dries up like a tiny stream in the summer heat. And instead of saying When did you start loving me, Keith, ‘cause you woke up one day and decided we’d been together for ages and everyone thinks you’re crazy his chin trembles and his eyes burn and he cries, again, and tells Keith of the months without him.
Every day I’m sorry I left you behind, Keith whispers into the heat of Lance’s skin, and every time in response Lance knows, I do not deserve this from you. And the desperate howling selfish part of him grows stronger and stronger.
Lance needs to make it end.
———
He cannot make it end publicly.
It’s too…messy for that. It has been too long now. He hasn’t counted the days but he knows what it looks like right before Keith screams himself awake, now, knows how to press his cold hands to the side of his neck and the curve of his ribs to startle his dream-self into thinking kinder thoughts. He knows how the chip on Keith’s right front tooth feels on his tongue, his knuckles, his shoulder. He knows that Keith showers with his eyes shut out of years of habit of showering in the dark and fearing the sting of the soap.
Rarely do they stop at a hotel. Usually they sleep in shifts, staying in space for days at a time instead of resting every night. It’s horrible and cramped and makes everyone cranky, but it brings them home faster. After everyone is fed up of air travel, which never takes long, they often stop somewhere small and uninhabited and out of the way – a moon, a burgeoning planet, a long-abandoned one. Whatever is closest. On those nights, the nine of them, plus the animals, will stretch and enjoy the fresh air, if there is any, maybe watch a setting sun. And then they will make a fire and cook rations or a real meal, if they can find ingredients and Hunk or Lance have the energy. And after everyone has eaten and conversations have long begun to slow, after teeth have been brushed and faces have been washed, after their friends have nodded off one by one, Keith will push their bedrolls together to make one, spread a blanket over the two of them, and hold Lance close; without question, without hesitation. And he will be out in moments, gently snoring along to whatever alien crickets are crooning into the night, and Lance will trace the shape of his face under the light of the dying embers and forget to be guilty. He will feel safe in Keith’s hold like he does not feel anywhere else and his feet will be warmed between Keith’s thighs. He will fall asleep with a smile on his face.
———
Five months into their journey, Coran says: “I have an announcement to make.”
“What’s up?” Pidge asks, swinging her feet from where she sits sideways in her chair, hair a mess, face buried in the not-quite-DS they found a few planets back. Lance smiles and rolls his eyes.
“In the next quintaint, we will be approaching Deruyn. The Deruy were close friends of the Alteans, eons ago, and the Chancellor has extended to me an invitation to reacquaint ourselves. If you’re all amenable, my dears, we have been invited to stay in the guest wing of her royal quarters for a week.”
Lance straightens up, rubber band ball he was toying with slipping from his grasp. He hears it bounce several times behind him before an abrupt stop, and then a very angry moo. He winces.
“Sorry, Kaltenecker.”
She huffs, clearly still miffed.
Everyone is talking over each other, eyes bright and excited through their video connections. Coran looks pleased, watching them all chatter. Lance catches his eye and smiles at him.
A whole week in a royal wing…and a real royal wing! Nothing like the paladin quarters they lived in on the Castle. They bedrooms will be huge, probably; fancy and ornate. Maybe a canopy bed and pillows comfier than Lance can even fathom.
And baths. Lance hopes there are big, deep baths he can almost swim in.
“You look dreamy.”
Keith’s amused voice startles him out of his daydreaming, although he can’t bring himself to be embarrassed. Everyone else is still chattering on, bubbling with excitement — no one is looking at him.
“I am,” Lance admits. He puts a hand to his forehead and sighs, more dramatically than necessary, pleased when it brings the expected reaction of Keith’s fond little smile. “There might be baths, Keith. Real baths. And oils and soaps and soft towels. And pillows! And a queen-sized bed!”
Keith’s smile turns teasing. “What you need is an Alaskan king.”
“Oh, shut up.”
Keith’s laugh has gotten rumblier since his space whale growth spurt, that’s the only way Lance can explain it. It’s softer and darker and suggests smile lines around his eyes he didn’t have before. Every time Lance looks at them he imagines them getting deeper and wider.
“Been a while since we’ve been somewhere with a real bed, huh?”
“Yeah.”
“Gotta make sure they don’t book us two separate rooms again,” Keith huffs, crease appearing between his eyebrows. “I still don’t know what that was about.”
Lance’s mouth goes dry.
I do, he should be saying. I know exactly why there were two separate rooms booked for us. In fact I can guarantee it will happen again.
But he is a coward. And the words die somewhere in his belly, before they can come anywhere near his throat.
———
It takes time to reach Deruyn. Some of this is because Shiro read the map backwards and set them back two days. (“I’m dyslexic!” he had defended, to their booing and whining. “There is not booing and whining to dyslexia! Do you boo and whine a lisp? No! Let me live!”)
By the time they finally manage to drag their poor, exhausted Lions to the sizeable planet, everyone’s excitement is so palpable Lance doesn’t need an emotional bond to feel it.
“Fresh air,” sighs Allura.
“Good food,” seconds Hunk.
“People to talk to that aren’t you fools,” agrees Pidge.
“A mattress,” Keith adds, and shoots Lance a wink.
Despite himself and rolling mess of feeling in his stomach, Lance flushes.
Coran accepts a call as soon as they’re within radio range, greeting a narrow-faced, pink-skinned woman who must be the Chancellor. Immediately they delve into a conversation that Lance doesn’t even pretend to follow. He recognizes Coran’s tone from the many times his mother would strike up a conversation with an aunt or uncle or any guest at all as they were leaving the house — this conversation could be hours long. His eyes glaze over, sliding away from his Lion’s display to take in the planet in front of him.
Deluyn is large, that much is obvious. It’s hard to scale something with such magnitude when it’s so close to your face, but if Lance had to guess, he would place it somewhere between Jupiter and the Balmera. It has no rings but the whole planet seems to glow, slightly, although Lance can see no clear source for it. The colours visible from orbit are entirely alien to him, so he’s not sure what is water, if anything is, but from the angry look of the planet’s poles, the dark green things are clouds.
What feels like a million hours later, but it probably only around fifteen minutes, there’s a click as the Chancellor and Coran end their call, and they are urged forward into landing. As they get closer to the landing strip, Lance notices dozens of children sprinting along the barrier, holding signs and flags and cheering. He grins, twisting his hands tighter around Red’s controls, hanging back just slightly from formation to give himself space to move. Then he yanks the controls to the side, feeling Red roar as she whips around in a tight circle, flames rolling down her back. The children jump up and down, fists raised, mouths open in shouts of joy. Several of their grownups watch with wide grins, too, necks craned to watch Lance spin around.
He pulls back into formation after a couple of tricks, sliding smoothly in between Black and Blue. His heart rate ticks up, and suddenly his undersuit feels tight, itchy. He squirms in his seat. When Shiro’s face pops up to relay landing instructions he flinches, and immediately hates himself for the hurt look that eclipses his friend’s face.
“…Lance?” Shiro asks softly, confusion lining his voice. He looks like a kicked puppy. Lance is a monster.
“I’m just jumpy, I’m just jumpy,” he assures, forcing a smile and holding it there until Shiro’s shoulders relax. “You know. So excited to see where we’ll be staying.”
“Yeah, me too! Coran even said they have this massive sauna they’re really famous for. I can’t wait. I miss what saunas do for my skin. And, plus, having our own rooms will be nice.” His excited grin turns sly. “Well, most of us will have our own room.”
Lance’s heart pounds for a totally different reason. “Okay thanks Shiro bye —”
He reaches to cut the connection but Shiro stops him, laughing.
“No, no, wait, I’ve got landing instructions. Their staff is limited so we gotta go one at a time, okay, stay in your Lion once you’re parked in case you need to adjust…”
Thankfully it’s nothing too complicated. Keith lands first, and Lance next to him, then Pidge, then Allura, then Hunk. Once they’re all parked and confirmed by ground control, they’re cleared it exit, none of them taking their time.
Well, everyone else disembarks pretty fast. Kaltenecker remains and stubborn pain in the ass as usual, and Lance is stuck trying desperately to drag an 800 something pound cow that has absolutely no desire to work with him. “Kallie,” he begs, tugging uselessly on her leash, “you dumb ass fucking animal. Please. I am begging you. I put up with your farts in the cabin for days on end, which has got to be shaving years off my life. The food I feed you could be better but in all fairness, I’m getting the same slop you are, so. Maybe cut me some slack.”
She doesn’t even moo at him.
Lance tries bribery.
“Say, you want good food? I bet they have good food on this planet. Nice, sweet, fresh grass. You love grass. You want grass? Please come on, Kallie. Everyone else has already left and I’m going to die of embarrassment if I’m the last paladin left, doing the walk of shame with his stubborn cow behind him. The jokes will write themselves. I’ll have to quit and join a travelling circus, and then who will put up with you? Remember that Allura wants to turn you into hamburgers.”
Clearly hamburgers were the wrong thing to mention, because if cows can glare, Kaltenecker does. She even has the audacity to huff her cow breath at him and drag them both further into Red. Red, who is a traitor, does absolutely nothing to help and is in fact laughing herself sick, loudly, in Lance’s mind.
“I shoulda left you in that damn mall,” Lance grumbles, not meaning it. He sighs and collapses against his cow’s side, closing his eyes. Just his luck. The rest of his friends are gallivanting about a fancy-dancy castle as guests of honour, and Lance is babysitting a methane machine. “I’m gonna have to sleep here tonight, aren’t I.”
“Well, I hope not.”
Lance yelps, jumping to his feet. Unfortunately, in his haste, his boot hooks around Kaltenecker’s hoof, and since she is still unmoving, he goes sprawling. Fortunately, Keith got stranded in a space whale for two years and took Prince Charming classes, or something, so he catches him.
“You’re such a nervous wreck,” Keith says fondly, leaning down to kiss him instead of letting Lance stand like a normal person. (Not. That Lance. Is necessarily complaining. But for prosperity’s sake, and everything, keeping a man in a dip for too long is just undignified, Keith, you should know that, you graduated top of your class from Fairytale University. So. Pull yourself together.)
“Am not,” Lance protests. He sighs as Keith adjusts his hold on him, patting around blindly until he finds the edge of Keith’s braid and undoing it. He slides his hands in that thick hair with a relish as soon as it’s free, making Keith chuckle (but, wisely, not say anything, because the one and only time he commented Lance avoided him for two days out of pure embarrassment).
“I sent the rest of the team on when you didn’t come out. Figured Kaltenecker was giving you trouble.” He meets Lance’s eyes and grins, dark eyes mischievous and sparkling, and Lance is seriously going to walk off a bridge because who authorized that, who, who approved the combination of big dark eyes and a crooked grin and a face that promises trouble. Huh? The fuck’s up with that. “Figured I could help.”
Lance manages to find a shred of dignity within himself and steps slightly away. “That’s great, Noble Kent, but last I checked you couldn’t drag an 800 pound heifer either, so.”
Keith nods. “‘Course not. Brought Kosmo. Here, boy.”
The wolf poofs to existence at Keith’s side, barking excitedly. He bounds up to Lance first, expecting his usual barrage of kisses and head scratches (which he gets), then gets all shy as he walks over to his crush. Kaltenecker looks over at him and no lie rolls her eyes, looking away again. Kosmo, however, is undeterred, barking happily before blipping them both out of existence.
“She is never gonna love you, dude,” Keith says, shaking his head.
Lance snorts, taking Keith’s offered hand and heading down Red’s ramp (finally). “Wouldn’t it be weirder if she did? I think we’d have to break them up. Like, ethically.”
“Could be a Donkey and Dragon situation.”
“Shut up. It ruins my perception of you every time I’m reminded you’ve seen Shrek.”
“You’re perception of me,” Keith repeats, musing. His right eyebrow twitches, and it’s too small to see at arm’s distance, but Lance knows a tiny scar ripples there, from when he was fourteen and got it pierced in defiance of Shiro. “What is your perception of me?”
Lance keeps himself steady. He puts one foot in front of the other and keeps his left hand held in Keith’s. There is nothing interrogating in Keith’s tone, he reminds himself, although maybe there should be. When he looks up Keith’s eyes are open and curious and something else he doesn’t know how to name.
“You’re honest,” he says quietly. He means to say more, has a list he could probably recite bullet by bullet, but he doesn’t.
“Honest,” Keith mutters to himself. “Huh.”
Lance swallows. He doesn’t know how he could possibly explain the weight to that. Keith is committed and brave and talented and beautiful. But more than that he is truthful. Does he see? Does he know?
An empty landing pad passes remarkably slowly when two people walk in silence. There are crafts of all kinds and tarmac upon tarmac. Eventually, though, they start walking somewhere a little more crowded; thin, reedy people resembling the Chancellor waving to them as they pass. Lance would stop to ask for directions, but the giant castle is kind of hard to miss, so they just walk in the direction of it hope their armour will do the talking for them.
Keith catches a richly dyed ribbon blowing by as they pass through a crowded market, trapping the fine thing between his fingers as it passes between them. It’s a strange and familiar colour, walking the line between indigo and deep violet. He glances around for a stall that might be selling them, and when he can’t find one, he turns to Lance and says, “Hold out your arm.”
Lance does. Carefully, Keith unlatches his vambrace, tucking it under his arm, then peels up his undersuit to lay bare his wrist. His tongue sticks out of his mouth slightly in concentration as he ties it among Lance’s dozens of string bracelets, right above his blue Moana watch still counting the hours back home.
“There,” he says proudly. “Looks good on you.”
Lance reaches up and kisses him until neither of them can breathe.
———
They know they will be teased when they finally meet with their friends at the castle.
“Let’s not,” Keith suggests, nodding at the guards who move to let them past.
“I’ll find out where our room is?” Lance says.
Keith nods. “Yeah, we’ll need that.”
“‘Kay, wait here. Don’t be obvious, or Allura will smell drama and come running.”
He’s jinxed them by saying anything at all — no sooner do the words leave his lips does Keith tense up, screwing up his face in an attempt to appear neutral but resembling instead someone who is trying very hard not to sneeze. Lance manages not to laugh, squeezing his hand once before darting off, choosing a random corridor and going with it.
Thankfully, he manages to find a person who holds a clipboard and walks with a purpose, so he assumes they know what they’re doing. Double thankfully, they do, and not only direct him to their rooms but press a labeled map into his hands. It even has a schedule on the back for mealtimes and room cleaning, which is something Lance totally forgot existed. He runs back to Keith quickly, careful to avoid the kitchen and the armoury — places he’s sure his friends will be.
Keith is earnestly inspecting a mounted sword on the wall when Lance returns. His nose is maybe an inch from the polished blade, probably less, honestly. Lance bites his lip to hold down a snicker and takes a picture, intending blackmail, but it ends up being the perfect shot — his hair is slightly wavy from the braid he wore earlier, and there’s a cute scrunch to his nose, not to mention his squinted eyes like he’s wishing for reading glasses. It becomes Lance’s background almost without him meaning to.
“C’mon, nerd,” he calls, smiling as Keith startles. “I got a map and someone is gonna meet us there with a key. I wanna check it out, get a move on.”
Keith does indeed hurry over. “I’m so glad they got it right this time. One room! No need to debate over it.”
Lance falters. He’d been so caught up in the excitement of the room and then Kaltenecker and then…Keith, he forgot. They’re not what Keith thinks they are, what Lance has been pretended to be.
“Right,” he manages, mouth suddenly dry. He desperately tries to shove the enthusiasm back in his voice, forcing his face into a smile when Keith looks back. “Right, yeah, that’s so much less of a pain.”
There is indeed someone with a key when they get to the room. The door is light, in both colour and material, and although his feelings are still heavy and conflicting, his excitement wins out. Keith takes the key, thanking the attendant, and a small voice in the back of Lance’s mind whispers this could be them some day, on Earth, with a key of their own. He does his best to ignore it.
“Ready?” Keith asks.
“Please oh please let the bed be bigger than Red’s cabin,” he responds.
Keith snorts. Slowly, out of what must be a desire to torture Lance, he slides the key into the lock and turns it. Lance doesn’t hesitate before shoving it open.
“It is bigger than the cabin!” he shouts, and wastes no time running up and onto it.
He practically sinks into the mattress, so soft it’s like it’s made of hopes and dreams. The blankets are the fluffiest things he’s ever felt in his life. And the space — he stretches out as far as he can, fingers to toes, and not a single limb comes even close to the edge of the bed.
The mattress dips beside him, and a hand slides along the back of his neck.
“This is you before you notice the big canopy.”
Lance lifts his head immediately. He fights back a very undignified squeal when he does, indeed, see a gossamer blue canopy hanging softly from the high ceilings.
“And the windows too, sweetheart. Floor to ceiling, like you like ‘em.”
Lance scrambles to his knees to check. They are. And the view is breathtaking.
“And the bathtub? Is it huge and clawfooted?”
Keith ducks his head, smiling, and presses a lingering kiss to his cheek.
“I’ll go check, you grandma. You take your armour off.”
He listens for Keith’s footsteps, waits for them to go from carpet to tile, waits for the “Yep! Claw foot!”, waits for the sound of rushing taps even though he didn’t ask, even though Keith didn’t offer. He turns on his back and stares as the canopy, inspecting the padded wooden roof structure from which the gauzy curtains hang, tracing its sturdy edges and even corners.
Keith makes him feel so warm.
He’s felt a lot of cold, in a lot of places, for a lot of his life. Part of it is the stupid anaemia that he gets to live with. Part of it is stuff he doesn’t like to think about. But Keith comes in with his warm hands and warm smile and stupid big warm heart, and Lance is thawed in every frozen inch of him. It’s good. It’s so good.
He wants it so desperately.
He comes when Keith calls, stripping his armour along the way. Keith is waiting for him in the bath when he gets there — and it is huge, close enough for them to both sit comfortably without brushing so much as a toe against each other, but of course Lance settles his spine against the curve of Keith’s chest the second he slips inside the steaming water. The room smells of sandalwood and lilac.
“You are so important to me,” Keith murmurs, seemingly at random, pressing his lips along Lance’s stretched neck, following the arch of it as he tips his head back to rest on Keith’s shoulder.
Lance’s breath sighs out of him, rising and mixing with the steam. He lifts a shaking hand to twine it to Keith’s, squeezing. Their joined hands are wet against his chest. Together they rise, up and down, up and down, up and down, with every shaky breath.
———
They giggle like teenagers, sneaking into the kitchen well after dark and well after most of the castle has finally gone to bed.
Neither has wanted to face the team’s teasing just yet, or even the team at all, really. Their room can’t be called a room so much as a small apartment — bookshelves lining the wall that Keith had been eyeing for hours, a massive wardrobe, a beautiful velvet sofa, even a small icebox. Neither of them have said it but it feels, implicitly, like their own little space, their own little commune, beyond the privacy of a hotel room. It feels like somewhere they could live. They’re billions of miles away from Earth and anywhere Lance could consider home, but it’s nice to pretend, and neither of them is ready to hop back into reality — or Hunk’s roasting — quite yet.
(It is not what Lance’s mind is pretending. In no world could they ever live in a castle like this. It is foolish to spend his time fantasizing about a future they will probably never have, a home they will never build. The guards stationed at every door should break Lance’s fantasy. But he has always been very, very good at pretending.)
“Just grab some of everything,” he whispers to Keith. “We have actual room cleaning, remember? We can have some dirty dishes, no one will mind.”
“There’s certainly space for it,” Keith agrees.
In minutes the two of them have piled almost more than they can carry. They’re much slower on the walk back, but no less giddy. As soon as the door is locked shut behind them, they’re sat on the bed, even though eating on a bed is disgusting and usually Lance would never permit it, and stuffing their faces.
“Oh my God, this thing tastes like strawberries. Here, try.” Keith holds up a juicy looking silver fruit, Lance leans over to bite it. It does taste like strawberry. He dusts off his hands and crawls over to chase the taste off Keith’s tongue.
“Strawberries get you going?” Keith mumbles, and Lance grins and says, “Something like that.”
They have more food than they can possibly eat and they eat until they can barely move. The rest they wrap up and stick in the icebox.
He can feel Keith falling asleep, head getting heavier, so he pats him gently on the hip and whispers, “Come on, get up, at least get ready first. Wash your face.”
Keith groans. He squishes his face further into Lance’s belly, making him squirm and laugh, and mutters something he can barely here. “Hnnngh. You first. I’ll catch up.”
“You’ll fall asleep,” Lance scolds, but he gets up first anyway. When he glances behind him he sees that Keith has at least managed to put one foot on the ground, so maybe he really will get up and put some pyjamas on.
Lance snorts. Yeah, right.
He takes his time and pokes around the bathroom, having been too preoccupied to do so beforehand. There’s a stack of fluffy towels and cloths on a shelf, and even a couple rough ones for exfoliating. In a cupboard lies dozens of soaps and oils and creams and a million other things, labelled in that same holographic translator stuff the Olkarions use so Lance can read them easily. He is impressed by the wide range of selection — he’s been slowly rebuilding his skincare collection, and will indeed be looting at least half of these bottles to complete it. There’s enough stuff here to do a whole soak. Nice.
Then he turns towards the sink. And he stares.
And he starts to cry.
Laid out exactly as he likes it is his stuff from his pack. His toothbrush, his primary face wash, his hair brush, his lotion, everything. In order of how he uses it, with the sink in the middle, and everything an appropriate distance from the sink so he doesn’t soak the whole counter trying to reach for whatever comes next in his routine. A setup his has perfected over many years and has had genuine conniptions over misplaced steps and wrong orders. Something inane and stupid and that only matters to him.
Of course Keith has noticed, of course Keith has memorized, of course he has replicated.
Lance is a horrible, horrible person.
This is has to be how it ends.
“Keith!” he shouts, and the man comes in running, half groggy and robbing the sleep from his eyes. He’s in a t-shirt and boxers.
“Lance?”
“My brush is — in the wrong place.”
Keith inspects him carefully. “You’re crying.”
“Because the brush is in the wrong place! I keep it in the same spot, I like it here, you know I like it here, why is it —”
He interrupts himself with a great, heaving hiccup, so large it shakes his whole body, and he’s furious with himself, with his shaking hands, with the careful look on Keith’s face.
This is how it ends.
This is how it ends.
This is how it ends.
“This is not where my brush goes,” he insists again, desperate to keep his voice steady, desperate to make it angry.
“Okay,” Keith says simply. He walks over and pulls the brush gently from Lance’s hands. “Where do you want it?”
Lance tries to breathe in. His chest shakes and shudders, poking holes in his voice. This isn’t working. Why isn’t it working?
“No, you’re supposed to — I’m being unreasonable.”
“You’re upset about something.”
“Something stupid.”
“Okay. I’ll fix it. I can fix it.”
“No, you can’t — I’m not —”
The rest of his strength leaves him.
This is how it ends.
This is how it ends.
Why can’t he make it end.
Slowly, Keith reaches out to grab his hands. Lance lets him, like the coward he is.
“Come to bed, sweetheart. You’ve had a long day. You need to sleep.”
“Okay,” he whispers, defeated, squeezing his eyes shut. He keeps them shut as Keith guides him to the giant bed, as he pulls back the covers, as he crawls in and waits for the sound of the light switch to be flicked off, of the tiny creak of Keith’s weight as he joins him.
For a long moment Keith is quiet. Long enough that Lance would assume he’d fallen asleep, except that he still sits upright, except that his hand has slid under Lance’s shirt, and his thumb traces a line across the small of his back, over and over again.
“There’s something you’re not telling me,” he whispers.
A new tear slips hot down Lance’s face.
This is how it ends.
He knows, or at least he must suspect. Maybe he realized his mistake some time ago, and has been waiting for Lance to fess up, to explain why he went along with Keith’s mistaken affection in the first place. Why he used Keith, confused as he was, for his own selfish needs.
“I’m sorry,” he says hoarsely. He can’t bring himself to turn around, to sit up, to meet Keith’s eyes.
Keith’s hand doesn’t so much as twitch. “What for?”
“For leading you on.”
That certainly gives him pause.
“Leading me…on?”
“Yeah.” Lance sniffles, dragging himself upright and away from Keith’s affectionate hands, huddled against the massive headboard. “You came back…confused. I don’t know. You thought we were in love. I wanted it, so I let you. I’ve been manipulating you.”
“Lance…” Even only in the silvery blue moonlight streaming in from the windows, Keith’s face is unmistakable, obvious; strong brow creased in worry, head tilted in confusion, face pulled with something like desperation. “Lance, we are in love. Aren’t we? I love you. And you love me, I know you do.”
Lance shakes his head. His tears make his face crumple and he knows how ugly that makes him look, so he hides his face.
“No, I made you feel that way, I didn’t correct you back then and it’s habit now so…”
He trails off. Keith doesn’t respond. He wonders if he’ll stay the night, bed surely big enough for him to sleep without touching Lance at all, or if he’ll have to go get a new room.
A tiny, tiny part of Lance’s brain recognises the irony in that and wants him to laugh. But the steady breaking of his heart keeps it at bay.
“…Back at the tarmac,” Keith says what feels like hours later, startling Lance out of his skin. He looks up at the man with wide eyes, having half-convinced himself he was already gone, and Keith meets his gaze determinedly. “Back at the tarmac, you said I was honest. Did you mean that?”
Lance swallows.
“Yes.”
Keith holds his gaze, looking for something, then nods, having found it. “Believe me then, sweetheart.” He crawls forward, slowly, as if he is afraid Lance will startle away from him. That fear is what startles Lance out of his stupor, out of his guilt, out of the dread that has been building in his stomach for months. He hasn’t seen that kind of fear — the fear of getting too close — on Keith face since he came back. And never does he want to see it again. He throws himself into Keith’s arms, too hard, hard enough to hurt, but Keith catches him and holds him and squeezes just as painfully tightly. “I love you, star of my skies.”
“That’s cheesy as hell,” Lance croaks, and Keith laughs, wetly and beautifully. “I love you too.”
“Good.” Keith kisses the top of his head. “Good.” He exhales, long and shuddering; relieved. “God, I spent two years waiting for this exact moment.”
The statement strikes Lance as odd. “This exact moment.”
Keith tenses. Lance tenses, too, and immediately he relaxes again, breathing steadily until Lance matches him.
“On the space whale, time was…stretchy.”
“You mentioned.”
“Two years I lost.”
Lance tightens his hold. “I know.”
“Most of it was survival camping, really, but there were these visions, sometimes. For Krolia and me. Our pasts. You guys, in the present.” He takes a breath. “Our future.”
Somehow, Lance gets the feel he’s not talking about his and Krolia’s.
“Our future?”
Keith’s breath tickles his neck. Lance doesn’t dare move. Goosebumps pimple his skin and he lets them, shivering, warmed.
“Yes. So much, all the time. More than anything else we saw. Just — tiny snippets, here and there; your face when you sleep, your fingers on a bow, you dragging me on a surfboard and a million other places I woulda followed you to anyway.”
One of his hands slides down Lance’s ribs, fingertips light enough to make him shudder, and rests, cupped open at his hip. “I saw this,” he admits. “Not — the whole conversation, or why, but my hands on you, in this bed, in the moonlight. It kept me going.”
Lance closes his eyes and tries to imagine. Stuck in a strange place where days don’t seem to pass with a stranger who claims to be his mother, watching visions of himself in the future, over and over again.
“No wonder your head was all wonky.”
“Yeah.”
“You’d already been with me. For two years.”
“For twenty. Thirty. Seventy.”
“…That’s a long time, Keith.”
“God, I hope so.”
Lance smiles. “You gonna stick with me that long, hotshot?”
“Like glue, darlin’.”
Lance looks up and, sure enough, Keith’s eyes are closed, face slack. He’s clinging onto consciousness with every bit of strength in his body, things like keeping his accent in check losing priority. Lance settles again against him, guiding them gently so they lie comfortably against the pillows, and breathes out, slow and long.
“Tell me about our future.”
“House on th’beach,” Keith murmurs. His words are slow and pulled apart. “Stone’s throw from your mama’s.”
Lance traces sleepy circles on his skin.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. Little boy with hair like yours followin’ every little thing you do.”
His breath hitches. He hadn’t thought about that — hadn’t let himself think about it. It’s dangerous, for more than one reason.
But tonight they’re safe. Under the silvery moonlight, with a bed three times bigger than they are, nothing can touch them.
“What about a little girl with your smile?”
“You got it.”
Lance’s smile is warm and giddy, tucked into Keith’s arm, etched there like it’s permanent. “Good. Goodnight, mi alma.”
“Night, baby.”
This is how it stays, forever and ever and always.

Paladins Accidentally Injuring Reader
Tumblr media
STOP CUZ IM A SUCKER FOR ANGSTY STUFF LIKE THIS💀💀💀 I decided to do ALL of them cuz why not💯💯 also sorry for taking so long to answer, this was sitting in my drafts for awhile, procrastination is not fun😔🙏💔💔 another also, I didn’t proofread this yet but I promise I will💔
Tumblr media
Keith
It all happened so quickly Keith had no idea what had happened
He remembered he was fighting one of Zarkon’s men, relentlessly attacking him with his sword when all of a sudden you came into the picture
While he was on overdrive, the Galra general had taken ahold of you when you tried attacking him from his side, swinging you in front of him
In front of Keith’s brutal attacks…
Using you as a human shield, Keith had no time to stop his sword from swinging down on you
While you did try to stop his attack with your dagger, his force was too strong, resulting in his sword slicing into your shoulder all the way down to your stomach
Keith could never forget the piercing scream you let out
Frozen is shock and horror, he was kicked backwards by the Galra, hearing his footsteps quickly fading from both of you
“Y/N!”
He is a MESS when he gets to you
His hands shake as he tries to apply pressure to your wound, but it’s just too large
His vision just zeros on your face as tears stain your cheeks. Despite whimpering in pain, you want to reassure him that you’re fine, but he doesn’t let you move an inch
By the time the rest of the group gets to him, Keith is too frantic and a bit unstable for him to think correctly
“GET AWAY!”
The group has no idea how to handle this situation as they watch him cradle your now passed-out body, his body shaking from the adrenaline of needing to protect you from anything else
“Keith, listen to me. We need to take Y/N to the castle now if we want them to survive. We can’t do that if you won’t let us help you.”
Shiro is literally the only person who can bring Keith back to earth, words hitting him like a train as he looks down at your body, watching as you take shallow breathes
Keith does not let anyone near you, not in your fragile state. He carries you all the to the castle, whispering apologies as your face twists in pain from every move
Once getting you to the pod room, he only allows Allura and Pidge in the room to help him set up your body and change you into a bodysuit
While you’re in the healing pod, he’s always sitting nearby, waiting in silence for you, hating himself for hurting you so badly
Despite you being out of commission, Voltron still needed to continue its mission
During this time, Keith pushes himself to the absolute MAX
Purposely puts himself in danger, not caring how hurt he gets because nothing can compare to what you had to go through
In a way, this is his own way of punishing himself for hurting the person he cared for
Keith won’t even listen to Shiro, brushing him off whenever the man offered to help patch him up after a more brutal mission
The team definitely gets worried when he begins straying from missions entirely, almost purposely trying to find danger at every corner
So once he finds out you’re out of the healing pod, he is extremely hesitant to see you
But he practically runs to you when Allura tells him you wanted to see him
Seeing him all bruised up upsets you once you find out what he’s been doing
He doesn’t care though, he’s immediately groveling at your feet, apologizing as his eyes slowly filled with unshed tears
“I’m sorry Y/N. I’m so sorry, I hurt you, worse than anyone else I-“
You pull him into a crushing hug, feeling him tense up but slowly relax in your embrace
“None of this was your fault, ok Keith? You may not forgive yourself but I never blamed you for anything.”
You need to comfort Keith so much because this boy almost lost the last familiar person he loved
It takes some time for him to feel secure with you again but the progress you make is enough to set him back in motion
Lots of physical contact occurs now since Keith needs to know that you’re actually with him
He is 100% more protective over you now, always keeping an eye on you when out on missions and protectively standing in front of you during battles
Lance
Lance felt like he was going to throw up
He watched as you quickly were thrown down to the ground, breath caught in his lungs as you laid there unmoving
He was trying to aim for one of the guards that was originally standing in your place, but they had moved last second once they saw him aiming at them
He had no idea that you were right behind the guard, so all he could do was watch in horror as his blast hit your chest, knocking you out in one swift moment
Oh,how he hoped it only knocked you out
Shiro had quickly ran over to your body, checking your neck for a pulse before he abruptly got up, attacking one of the sentries who was aiming at you
Lance was already running to you, sliding over and immediately clutching onto your body
His eyes watered, not able to focus on anything else except your short, shallow breaths
“LANCE YOU NEED TO TAKE THEM BACK TO THE CASTLE! QUICK, I’LL COVER YOU!”
Shiro’s voice brought him back to reality as he picked your body up bridal style and made a dash for his lion
Lance would be so worried over you once they put you in one of the healing pods
He would distance himself from the group immediately afterwards, almost running to his room to just let out the emotions
Oh god, he almost killed you
Lance would be inconsolable during all this, he wouldn’t eat any of Hunk’s food, ignore Keith’s comments that would normally set him over the end, and just not focus on Shiro’s attempts in comforting him
He would spend the days you spend in the pod wandering and moping around the halls of the castle, feeling absolutely terrible for what he did to you
He would sit quietly as your pod door opened, watching from afar as Pidge helped you from falling over
You would notice how everyone around you seemed relieve you see but the one person you really wanted to see stood by the entrance of the room
Lance would not be able to look you in the eyes
“Lance…”
Now he’s a crying mess💔💔
“Y/N! I’m-I’m sorry! If you had actually-“
He just feels awful for what he had done, accident or not
You would stumble over to him, hugging him and feeling as he clutched onto you
His sobs sound throughout the room, the group looking with remorseful eyes, seeing how much this had actually affected him
“You didn’t know Lance. No one could have known that would happen.”
Lance would not be able to leave your side for a few days afterwards
He would still be quiet, but he would slowly begin going back to his usual self
Though during the night, he would get nightmares on the event, only your sweet whisperings could lull him back to a peaceful sleep
After the near death experience, he feels much more aware of his surroundings and how he used his gun
He just cares so much for you, he doesn’t know what he would do if you got hurt like that again
Pidge
Things were going rough for the paladins during their mission, they were slowly losing control on the battle
Seeing an opportunity in front of her, Pidge noticed an electric column near her, already devising a plan
She would wrap her bayards cord around the column, making it an electric extension and have it thrown to their large enemy
It was perfect, until it wasn’t
Not getting the timing right, Pidge quickly threw her bayard to the column, watching the electricity travel through the cord and flying straight to the beast
Except you had jump in front of the beast, hoping to get a hit in, not even realizing the electric cord heading your way
All Pidge could do was yell out your name in horror
“Y/N NO!”
You quickly turned around, eyes wide when you saw what was heading towards you and unable to dodge the electrified weapon
The group could only watch with shocked faces as you screamed out in pain, watching the electricity course through your body
Being the one near a control panel, Keith slashed the entire system, hoping that would at least turn off the electricity
“TEAM FALL BACK!”
Shiro ran towards you, picking up your limp body from the ground and pushing Pidge to run out of the room and into their lions
Her hands shook with fear
She didn’t mean for this to happen. She thought she would be helping everyone. But all she could envision was your body twitching from the last of the electricity leaving your body
Tears formed in her eyes as she let out sobs, ignoring everything else around her, even the concerned words of her paladins
She would be the first one out of her lion, watching with puffy eyes as Shiro quickly took you to the healing pods, not bothering in changing you into a body suit
She would do anything Allura and him asked her to do regarding you
She would ask if there’s anything she can do
She just feels awful like this poor girl :(
Once hearing how long you’d have to stay in the healing pod, she definitely shuts down
It’s almost like she’s a robot, choosing to lock herself away in her room not wanting to see anyone
To distract herself from her guilt and remorse, she buries herself in any new and old projects
Despite clicking away at her laptop, she wouldn’t be able to stay away from you.
Sits out of your pod staring off into space
No matter how many times the group asks, she never tells them how she truly feels
No, they shouldn’t be asking her if she was ok
This was her fault. It was her fault that you had to stay in there, hopefully no longer in pain
Pidge would be the first to know that you’re out since she’s been waiting this entire time
Doesn’t speak a word to you as she helps you out and settles you on one of the stairs
Both of you would sit in silence before you decide to take her hand
“That wasn’t your fault Pidge. It was a smart idea, I was just there at the wrong time.”
Tears would down her face as she would lean her body against yours
“I’m sorry…”
Pidge would lose some confidence in herself, needing your help in building it back up
She would linger behind you now, not wanting to make the same mistakes
Would hold your hand to help her calm down, to know that you’re ok now
Give her lots of hugs man, she needs the support cuz her brain is not the best place to be when she still blames herself for hurting you :((((
Hunk
The Galra took the entire team by surprise while they were busy helping the residents of the planet they were on
Chaos fell throughout the area, the paladins rushing towards the lions to protect the innocent civilians
Despite you being sent to help shelter civilians, Hunk couldn’t help but worry over your safety
Normally you two would be hip to hip next to each other, so not having you near him really put him on edge
While attacking Galra fleets, the yellow paladin wouldn’t be conscious of the small figure running by a cliff nearby
It would be too late for Hunk to react to the rocks that were blasted by his lions beams as they came crashing down on you
His eyes widen in horror as he saw the pieces of rock fall around, watching as you held your shield up in a pathetic way of protecting yourself, only to lose sight of you when a particularly large rock fell over you
“NO!”
His panic would be through the roof as he would leave the rest of the paladins to fight off the galra
Shaky breaths from him are louder than the voices he hears from the comms of his helmet
“Hunk where are you going?!”
“Hunk we need you here now!”
“Guys I need some backup!”
This poor boy would be so overwhelmed with the others voices and trying to find you under all the rubble he unknowingly blasted on you
Yanking his helmet off and tossing it, he would instead focus on digging you out, sighing in relief once he finds you battered up, yet still breathing
Silent tears would travel his face as the yellow lion gently takes you in its mouth, making the difficult decision to leave behind his friends
He could only hope they would forgive him as he hears the panicked and furious yells coming from his helmet
Once at the castle, he would run through the halls to the healing pods, being careful to not hurt you any further
Hunk would fully blame himself
He just feels awful about the condition you’re in, babbling out what had happened as Coran propped you in a pod
“There was nothing you could have done, Hunk.” Coran’s reassuring hand on his shoulder wouldn’t help with his inner turmoil, especially once the rest of the team barges in
“Hunk! You just totally left us out there!” Lance hadn’t a clue what had happened
Overwhelmed, the team could only watch as tears and sniffles came from Hunk
After the event, Hunk would definitely be distant from the team
While the others would try to cheer him up, nothing could really bring him out of his head
The team would notice how he almost resembled a zombie during meetings and missions, on autopilot since that fateful day
In order to distract himself from his own feelings, Hunk would spend most of his free time cooking and baking
Though no matter how much dishes he cooks, everyone notices how each meal seems to be a bit off, never really tasting or looking right
He would also spend a lot of his time sitting in front of you, kinda having mini conversations with you (even though you can’t respond💔)
Hunk can’t sleep at night either since he gets waken up by his nightmares, constantly seeing your fragile body hiding underneath all the rubble in his dreams
I feel so bad for him because literally no one could have expected you to be caught in the crossfire of the battle
Shiro would try to talk to him, but his words would go in one ear and out the other, resulting in Hunk staring off into the distance with a reminiscent look im his eyes
One particular night though, his nightmare would scare him too much, not allowing him to go to sleep anymore
Rubbing his eyes in exhaustion, Hunk walks to the kitchen in the dead of night, needing to snack on something to distract himself from his pounding heart
Hearing footsteps, he would look over his shoulder from the fridge to see who else needed something to eat only to widen his eyes
“Y/N?”
Leaning on the entrance, your tired eyes met with his tired ones, and you would stumble towards him
Hunk puts down his food to quickly run over to you, helping you to a seat as his eyes shined with unshed tears
“What’s wrong Hunk? Did something happen?”
The way your hands rubbed under his eyes did not stop even when he closed his eyes, allowing his tears to finally fall
The room, lit only by the open fridge, filled with the sounds of Hunks sniffling as you drew him into a hug from your seat
“I thought that I had k-killed-“
“Hey. Don’t say that. I’m here, I’m alive, and that’s all that should matter.”
Taking a shaky breath, Hunk would pull away, bringing your hands back to his face as his head leaned into them
“I know. I’m just really, really sorry. I should have payed more attention.”
“It’s ok Hunk. If anything, I should be sorry, I shouldn’t have run into a clear danger zone.”
Hunk preps you a quick meal before taking you to bed, insisting you need as much rest as possible
He sleeps peacefully at last once he has you in his arms💔💔💔
Expect lots of hand-holding and hugs from this dude
He needs a lot of reassurance from you to remind him that you’re actually there next to him
Cooks you so much food, putting so much effort into each meals and making everything beyond your standards
(The team is definitely happy over this, now that they don’t have to eat any more space goo💀)
Would be protective of you the first few days since you’ve woken up, he’s just really paranoid of you getting injured like that again :(
Since that event, Hunk would be extremely cautious of his surroundings, making sure to avoid any more preventable injuries to those around him
Shiro
He has no idea what had happened
One minute he’s fighting alongside you against the sentries shooting at the two of you and the next he’s slammed you against a wall
He tries fighting himself from hurting you any further but the loud whisperings in his head seem to take control of his body
In that moment, you don’t recognize the man standing in front of you
Ducking and stumbling away, you quickly evade Shiro’s glowing hand, watching in horror as it goes through the wall
“SHIRO WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”
His crazed eyes makes contact with yours, once again rushing towards you
In the corner of your eye you see a figure vanishing in thin air, realizing it might have been the witch Allura had told you all about
Distracted, Shiro manages to land a blow on your side causing you to grunt in pain and go tumbling towards the ground
You barely roll away before his fist meets the spot you once were at
“SHIRO PLEASE! THIS ISN’T YOU!”
You’re words don’t seem to have any affect on him as he’s up once again and heading straight towards you
As much as you hate the thought, you know you have to protect yourself from him as he’s too dangerous in the state he’s in
You’re dagger clashes against his metal arm, his strength slowly over powering you because of your injured arm
Kicking your side, Shiro’s narrowed eyes meet yours before he’s picking you up the ground
You grip his metal hand as it tightens around your neck, your breathing becoming shallow as he cuts off your airway
“Shiro… I forgive you…” You knew this wasn’t you’re Shiro, the man you knew coming out for a moment when you saw his eyes widen in surprise before going straight back to the dull black ones that stared straight through you
It was only when Lance began shooting at him out of no where did he throw you against a wall, officially knocking you out
Keith slammed his body against Shiro’s causing the two of them to crash on the ground, trying to over power the other
Then that’s when his head was finally able to clear up and stop fighting against Keith
“What’s going on? Why are we fighting?”
Everyone would stare in disbelief before quickly explaining what happened, Hunk already carrying your body towards the group, shielding you from the eyes of Shiro
He would stare in shock at the state of your body though, flashes of what might’ve happened going through his mind
Heading back to the castle, everyone would still be on edge around him
Seeing what he had done to you, this man does some serious evaluations on himself
How could he possibly hurt you, someone he cared for, this much?
Seeing the bruises forming on your neck scares him
If he did this to you, Shiro can’t imagine how far he would’ve gone if he wasn’t stopped in time
During your time in the healing pod, Shiro would distance himself from the team as he doesn’t fully trust himself enough around them, fearing he might hurt them all as well
He visits you daily, but once one of the other paladins enters the room he’s quickly excusing himself and walking away
He feels EXTREMELY guilty over what he did, going through many sleepless nights
He had almost killed you
He is harsher on the team during missions as well since he doesn’t want a repeat of what had happened with you
He is way harsher on himself too
Spends his time in the training room, tiring himself out with the gladiator, pushing his body past its limit
Still remembers what you said to him, so while you said you forgave him, I don’t think he would ever be able to forgive himself for hurting you
The team would notice the strain on them when Shiro began distancing himself from them
He was the one who put them all together so it really hurt them to see him struggle with the recent event
Once you finally awake from the pods, Shiro is the last one to greet you
You notice how he stands at a distance which causes you to narrow your eyes
“What’s wrong Shiro?”
The way you immediately notice his coldness causes his fake smile to strain
It never ceased to amaze him how you could see past him
He would explain his concerned to you once everyone decided to give you both privacy, how he was afraid of losing control again, how he had almost killed you
What had happened made him uncomfortable, knowing the power he held with his arm
You smile sadly as him reaching for his metal hand, faltering when he slightly moved it away from you
Sadness filled his eyes as he glanced to his arm before letting you take his hand
“I don’t blame you for anything Shiro. I know that wasn’t you, I know the real you. You would rather sacrifice your own life to save one of us, so please don’t be so harsh on yourself. You couldn’t control what happened.”
“Exactly. I couldn’t control what happened, I couldn’t control my own body.”
Your reunion was bittersweet to say the least
He is much more cautious around you
Keeps his distance for a few days before ultimately choosing to stay by your side
He wants to do anything to make up for your injuries
Much more softer around you and the others now that he knows you’re ok💔
Allura
“Allura what are you doing?!”
The mission the team was on was extremely crucial since, if successful, they would be able to retrieve valuable intel on Zarkons plans (ooo so original)
And it involved taking down his witch, Haggar
Allura was all for the plan and took it very serious
She believed this was one of their most important missions yet
So while it did surprise the group on how brutal the princess was in fighting her way to Haggar, no one really tried to stop her, knowing just how much it meant for them to get this information
Yet you could see the danger her aggressive behavior was dragging her in
You’d jump in front of her, trying to stop her from pushing herself too far
“Y/N what are you doing?! We must stop that witch from getting away!”
Allura was on a one track kind, take down Haggar and get any useful info from her, but you were making it extremely difficult to do so
Blinded by her own needs, she didn’t take into account of how hard she had thrown you to the ground away from her when she managed to wrap her bayard around you
Running from your injured self to Haggard, she was yanked to the ground
“Allura watch out!”
She could only watch in shock as you dashed in front of her from the ground to protect her from the blast Haggard sent
Her hands shook as she watched your body hit the ground
Haggar was getting ready to blast you both again, forcing Allura to attempt to drag you away before a searing pain filled her body, causing her to crumble down to the ground beside you
Tears filled her eyes as she watched in pain as your breathing became ragged
You both were in this situation because of her
Allura was forced to watch as the witch made her escape, the mission resulting in a failure
After getting help from the paladins and returning to the house of lions, Allura would immediately distance herself from everyone
She’s not only disappointed in herself for costing the team their mission, but she feels terrible for putting your life at such a high risk, all because she didn’t know when to stop
She would mostly lock herself up in her room while you spend your time in the healing pods
Whenever someone tried to approach her door, they would only be met with the sound of her soft sobs
When she isn’t in her room though, Allura is extremely harsh and temperamental with the others
She doesn’t know how to properly release her emotions which causes her to lash out often to those around her
She would be too afraid to visit you in the healing bay
She feels too ashamed to face you, even if you aren’t really conscious
I also think she would brush aside any concern the team may show for her, instead, trying to keep up her image as a strong leader
(Which isn’t working out, everyone can see she’s basically a ticking time bomb)
Allura pushes herself even harder now during missions and battles, which is lowkey kinda hypocritical of her since that’s what got her in that position in the first place
After briefly talking with Keith, Allura would find herself in the training deck, hoping to relieve some of her pent up emotions with the gladiator
Maxing out to the highest possible level, the princess managed to tire herself out, not having enough energy to beat the machine
Grunting in pain, she waited for the gladiator to land a hit on her before she heard the voice of the person she was dreading to see
“End training sequence!”
You would run to her and cradle her body, concern written all over your face
Despite putting you in danger and managing to hurt you in the process, you still cared for her well-being
Tears well up in the princesses eyes before she gave you a crushing hug
Feeling her body shake against yours, you gently wrap your arms around her, whispering soothing words
“I almost got you killed…”
“I’m still here, are’t I?”
Allura would definitely learn a lot through that experience
She would stop pushing herself so hard and begin relying on her team to assist her during missions
She would also linger around you more often than not
She still feels incredibly guilty for what she put you through, but doesn’t tell you (you know though💔)
I also think that she MIGHT be more open to physical affection in front of the others since she needs to confirm that you’re still alive and popping
Holding your hand is something that she does a lot now since it soothes her heart knowing you’re still with her
Expect her to be a little more protective of you though, she does not want you to be in such a critical state again
She doesn’t want to lose you too :(

WTIYS: Galaxy Dance
For @klcosmiczine and the cover art D/WTIYS!
Mind-numbing echoes.
That’s what Keith Kogane expects from space. He has no particular attachment to it, aside from the secrets it whispers about his mother and where she might be now. There’s a low thrum that Keith can sense drawing patterns across his skin, even within the steel walls of the castle. He pays the vastness of space little mind most of the time, though, and simply tries to focus on his duty.
That is until Lance McClain crashes through the door.
“Keith, want to go on a spacewalk?” he asks.
His blue eyes glitter like the ocean, drawing Keith in with little resistance. The red paladin gulps and rubs his sweaty palms against his sweatpants. He’s had it bad for Lance for a while now. He’s usually good at hiding it, too, laser-focusing on training and missions, with no one being the wiser. But all it takes is a lingering glance to disarm Keith and make the air punch out of his lungs.
He hesitates for a moment, old wounds and fears leaving him unsure. He wonders if Lance can see through him, and what he’d think if he knew, knew that Keith’s love is slowly choking him and that he’s at a loss for what to do.
Keith shakes his head to rid himself of the thought before he stands to follow.
Lance puts his armor and helmet on in the locker room and gestures for Keith to do the same. They change in silence, with Keith stealing glances at Lance when he thinks the other isn’t looking. There’s softness in Lance’s very being, like he cannot even move without radiating warmth, leaving Keith enamored with his leg only halfway in his boot.
“Keithy, your shoe,” Lance points out, amused.
He strolls over and, without question, helps Keith finish putting his armor on. Keith is putty in his hands, staring at Lance’s nimble fingers and loving eyes and only finding the strength to mumble a ‘thank you’ as they stand and head to the airlock.
Lance is so gentle with him now that their relationship has improved. He gives Keith his full attention, goes out of his way to help and talk to him, and sits with him when he has nightmares. Keith moves towards his energy like a freezing traveler in the coldest winter. He’s desperate to feel that sun on his skin, something simple and certain and beautiful that leaves no room for doubt.
Lance’s hand squeezes his as they open the airlock and float up and away with their jetpacks. The ringing of space feels more prominent than usual, but Keith finds that his attention is taken up by the sight of Lance pulling him along.
“Where are we going?” he asks, voice fuzzy and muffled by the comms mic.
Lance shifts to face Keith, not letting go even once, and pulling him closer. Keith’s breath catches in his throat when their bodies are flush.
“Dancing,” Lance answers as if it’s the most natural thing in the world.
He skillfully spins them around and around amongst the stars, never going fast enough to make them sick, though Keith finds that his stomach is still swooping and reminding him that he is very much in love.
The red paladin wants to point out that he has no idea how to dance but finds that the words die in his throat. He’s dizzy from the feeling of Lance’s own hands in his, grateful for the lack of gravity that keeps him from slipping. Lance laughs with him while they attempt to twirl each other around. He even identifies some of the constellations Keith mentioned liking on their star map, pointing their brilliant outlines out whenever Keith swings to face them.
There’s no music, no gravity, no sound - but the two of them dance as if they’re happier than ever, their laughter echoing on the comms and filling the cold obsidian of space with light.
He’s melting into Lance’s shoulder before long, heart beating out of his chest and screaming.
“Lance— Lance, I—”
Lance tilts his head expectantly. His grip on Keith’s hands doesn’t loosen as he floats with patient curiosity.
“Lance, I love you,” Keith manages.
His chest constricts with pain when his words are met with silence. He wants to run to the furthest corner of the castle and finally yell at the top of his lungs. He wonders if he will regret his admission, after all, if the ache he feels is destined to last forever.
It isn’t.
Lance puts a ginger hand underneath Keith’s chin and lifts it. He’s beaming, Keith realizes in awe, seeing tears gather in the corners of the blue paladin’s eyes.
“You beat me to it, Big Red.”
Keith short-circuits. “But I thought you didn’t— I didn’t think you—”
Lance chuckles and caresses Keith’s arm. “But I did, and I wanted to tell you after we danced. I know you’ve been feeling cabin fever. I wanted to say something when it felt right.”
Keith chokes out a silent sob, wrapping around Lance and feeling elated when he does the same.
“You’re a sap,” the red paladin grumbles, though he wears a smile.
“I’m your sap now,” Lance corrects, running a hand up and down Keith’s lower back to soothe him. “So get used to it!”
Surrounded by the stars in the vast hum of space, Keith chuckles, finding that his heart is more settled than it has ever been.
He can’t help but thank Voltron — and space itself — for bringing Lance to him, however great their journey ahead.

𝙲𝚛𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚕 𝚅𝚎𝚗𝚘𝚖 (𝙿𝚝 𝟸)
Shiro is in the detainment room interrogating Sendak, who is still asleep in his pod.
"What was the first rank you held in Zarkon's army? Where did you find the Red Lion? What is the Zarkon's greatnes weakness?" Shiro hears Sendak's voice, becoming startled.
"What makes you think you can possibly defeat him?" Sendak's mouth isn't moving and he remains alseep.
"If you were to attack Zarkon, where would you strike?"
"Why strike at all when you can join him?" Shiro sees an image of Sendak awake, but the commander is still alseep.

Pidge and Hunk are in the Green Lion's hanger.
"I bet if we can modulate the dynamics of this crystal, we'll be able to reverse engineer a lot of Galra tech. Don't you think" Pidge doesn't get an answer and turns to see Hunk looking somewhere else "Hunk? Hunk, are you paying attention?"
"What?" Hunk turns around "No, I'm sorry. That whole food goo ambush really set me on edge, Pidge" Pidge walks over to the Crystal "If we can't trust food, we are lost as a culture"
"Relax. I'm sure the Castle's just glitchy. It's 10,000 years old"
"Yeah, it does seem like the ship is not currently trying to kill us.
"Okay, so, all the sensors are on the crystal. Hit the switch" Hunk goes over to the switch and before he can press anything, everything begins floating, including Hunk and Pidge "Hunk, did you accidentally hit the anti-gravity switch?"
"Uh, no. There's no anti-gravity switch. Uh, is there?" Hunk asks. Pidge tries to reach for the crystal before giving up "Curse my short arms.
"Oh, I hate those little things! All right, forget it, Pidge. I'm going to swim towards you. Just hand on!" Hunk begins to 'swim' towards Hunk, but he doesn't move "That's it. I'm all out of moves" Hunk's stomach rumbles "Oh, I'm hungry again. I hope some food goo comes oozing out of these walls"

Lance is banging on the door to the airlock.
"Help! Help! Help!"
"....12,11,10..." Keith runs around the corner, bayard in hand as the Gladiator robot is still after him "...9,8,7..." Keith is kicked back to the door.
"Keith!" Lance shouts, as Keith stands up.
"...6..5..."
"What are you doing in there?" Keith asks. Lance points the Gladiator robot that swings at Keith, who dodges.
"I need help! Because if you don't get me out of here right now, I'm going to be sucked out into space!"
"Doors opening" The Airlock doors open and Lance holds on tight.
"I'm getting sucked out into space" Keith fights the Gladiator before turning his gaze to the button for the airlock. He pushes the Gladiator back as he pushes the button with his bayard. The door opens and the Gladiator is pulled into space "Keith! Keith, come on!" Keith grabs Lance's hand and pulls him to safety, before closing the door. They sit down, breathing heavily.
"What were you doing out there?"
"Who was that guy?"
"He was trying to kill me!"
"Well, is he the Castle? Because that's who's trying to kill me!" They then hear a noise and turns to look, getting ready to attack. As it comes around the corner they go to attack, before seeing that it's Soul.
"Huh, Soul?" Keith asks, he puts his bayard away "What are you doing here? Where's Y/N?" Soul starts acting out what's happening to Y/N, but they don't get it.
"What? Has something happened to Y/N" Soul nods "What! Where?!" Soul runs away, and the two follow.
==
Y/N is now touching the ceiling as the water is up to her neck.
"This is how I'm gonna die! In a freaking bathroom!" Y/N hears footsteps, then banging on the door.
"Y/N!"
"You in there!"
"Lance! Keith! Oh thank god! Guys I'm stuck, and the rooms about to be filled with water!"
"Okay, hang on, we'll get you out of there" Lance starts banging on the door, trying to break it down. Y/N takes a deep breath before the water fills the whole room. She looks around the room to find anything to help breath with.
"Y/N!" Lance shouts, he gets no answer "Y/N!" Y/N begins to lose consciousness. Keith gets his bayard out.
"Stand back" Keith slashes the door with his bayard and the water pours out, as well as a soaking Y/N. She lays still as they turn her onto her back. Soul goes next to her head and pushes her head to the side, which stays.
"Y/N...?" They wait a second before Y/N starts coughing up water. Lance and Keith share a look of relief, before helping her sit up. Lance takes off his coat and puts it around Y/N.
"What the hell happened" Keith asks.
"The d-door just locked and the pipes burst...God, I nearly died in a bathroom" Soul jumps into Y/N lap and Y/N pets her head "If it wasn't for her, I would have been dead" Y/N looks at Lance and Keith "This may sound stupid, but I think the Castle's haunted"
"Ya think!" Lance says. They stand up and begins to walk away.
==
Pidge and Hunk are still floating around in the Green Lion's hangar.
"Wait. Wait, wait. I have an idea" Pidge holds out her hand "Grab on!" They both reach for each others hand before they grab on.
"Yeah! We did it! Now, what?" Hunk asks.
"Now, kick me as hard as you can!"
"What? No, we're friends"
"No, no. Kick me so I can fly across the room and get to the control panel"
"Oh...oh, oh!" Hunk kicks Pidge and she goes towards the control pannel, but misses it "No, no, no!" The door then opens, making Hunk and Pidge fall to the ground. Lance, Y/N, Soul , Coran and Keith enter.
"How can you guys be taking a nap while this castle is trying to kill us?" Lance asks.
"Taking a nap! We've been floating around in Zero G? You know how scary that is?"
"That's not scary! That's fun! I was almost ejected into space!"
"I got attacked by killed food, and that's the most horrifying thing you can imagine! The stuff of nightmares! It'll haunt me to my grave!"
"Well, I had a robot trying to kill me!"
"And I nearly drowned, in a bathroom! I mean, ironic much!" Lance looks to Coran.
"I don't care what you say, Coran. This castle has gone apple and bananas!" Coran groans.
"Perhaps the infection from Sendak's Galra crystal is worse than we thought"
"Well, let's get rid of it" Hunk says.
"It's too late. When Sendak plugged it into the ship, it corrupted the entire system"
"Sendak?" Keith asks.
"Wait" Y/N says "Has anyone seen Shiro?"
==
Shiro is still staring at Sendak.
"We're connected, you and me. Both part of the Galra Empire"
"No! I'm not like you"
"You've been broken and reformed. Just look at your hand" Shiro does so.
"That's not me!"
"It's the strongest part of you. Embrace it. The others don't know what you are. They haven't seen what you've seen. Face it. You'll never beat Zarkon. He's already defeated you"
"I'm not listening to you!" Shiro covers his ears.
"Do you really think a monster like you could be a Voltron Paladin? Even your own sister is disgusted in you"
"Stop it!" Shiro punches the Pod, cracking it. Sendak's eyes open and smiles evily at Shiro, making him panic and push a buttom to send Sendak out. Alarms start blaring. Shiro bends down, breathing heavily. Later, the Paladins, Soul and Coran enter the containment room to see Shiro holding his head.
"Shiro, are you okay?" Y/N asks, touching his arm. He flinches away and she looks at him saddened.
"Where's Sendak?" Keith asks.
"I...I had to get him out of here. I was hearing his voice. He...He can't be trusted on this ship"
"It is the ship! I got stick in a cryo-pod, then, in an airock. Keith got attacked by a robot. Y/N nearly drowned, and Hunk and Pidge got attacked by food. It's been a weird morning" Computes begin beeping as a hologram of the ship appears/
"What? How is that possible?"
"What is it?" Keith asks.
"The ship is starting a wormhole jump!"
==
The Paladins, Coran and Soul enter the main deck to see Allura at the center.
"Allura, what's going on?" Shiro asks.
"We're going to Altea" Alura turns her head to face them "We're going home. My father is taking us" They rush forwards before King Alfor face appears on the screens. (Red-Bad King Alfor. Blue - Good King Alfor)
"Stay away from my daughter!"
"Uh..."
"Allura, wake up!" Y/N shouts.
"The crystal must have corrupted King Alfor's artificial intelligence. It's taking over!" King Alfor appears next to Allura. They reach their destination, staring in horror.
"We're heading straight for a star and it's about to explode!"
"Father, I can see Altea" Coran goes to the barrier, and puts his hand on it.
"Allura! Allura, wake up! What you're seeing isn't real" Allura turns her head to face Coran before seeing some creatures fly past her. She smiles before seeing a meadown filled with flowers.
"The juniberried, the most exquisite flower of all" Allura picks one up.
"Allura, please!" A hologram of Coran appears "You've got to listen to me!"
"Is this real?" Allura asks.
"Of course it is real, Daughter. That flower you're touching is real"
"But where is the fragrance of the sweet juniberries?" Coran says, making Allura sniffs the flower again before coming back to reality.
"Huh? That's not Altea"
"When that star goes supernova, it will destroy the entire system. Allura, you must reset the course and get us out of here" Pidge says and Allura goes to the controls but is electrocuted back out of the barrier, caught by Shiro. King Alfor appears.
"Father, please, I beg you to turn this ship around. If we don't do it soon, we will all perish!"
"I know. That is my intention"
"What? Why?"
Don't you see, dear daughter? Zarkon can never be defeated. He's been ruling for ten thousand years"
"But we must continue to fight!"
"Fight for what? It is all over for Altea. You don't have to live a lifetime of war. You can be with me and the rest of your people"
"Father, please! The paladins and I can still stop Zarkon! Somewhere in there, you must want that to happen"
"Allura, my A.I. has been corrupted. You must disconnect my power source" It flickers back "We can stroll across the Blossom Canyon every morning, just like we used to. Remember how much you loved that?"
"I remember. I'll see you soon, Father" Allura turns around "I've got to get into the A.I. chamber to disconnect my father's power source manually"
"But that means losing King Alfor forever!"
"Paladins, get to your Lions! I need you to slow the Castle's descent into the star"
"I can try to override the sytem to open the hangars" Allura and the Paladins leave the control room, leaving Coran and Soul. The Lions comes out of the hangars and push against the ship, using their thrusters.
==
Allura makes it to the A.I room and goes to the center.
"Don't do this!" King Alfor says.
"You must"
"All my memories, all my knowlegde will be lost forever!"
"Do it, Allura. If you are to live, we must say goodbye"
"I'm sorry about this, Father" Allura goes to touch the container but everything blackens. "Huh?"
"Oh, my dear daughter..." Allura hears laughter and looks over at a memory of her and her father.
"Father..." She looks around to see memories of her and her father, young. Her childhood memories.
"This is not real. This is all in the past" Allura runs through the memories till she stares at the one of her father holding her when she was a baby, her baby laughter filling her ears. She begins crying. King Alfor appears.
"You don't have to fight, Allura. You don't have to make this sacrifice" Allura rushes forward and hugs her father, surprising him.
"Goodbye, Father" King Alfor smiles softly.
"Goodbye Allura" The glass container smashes, as all of King Alfor's memories fade away. Soul, who found her way to the room, goes next to Allura, placing her paw onto her leg. Allura looks to the creature and picks her up, hugging Soul while crying.
"She did it" Coran says, seeing the barrier go away. Alarms start blaring. and the Paladins are still pushing the ship back when Allura's face appears on their screens.
"Paladins, get to your hangars. We're getting out of here" They return to their hangars and they escape through the wormhole just as the star explode. Later, they are all in the control room. Allies is sat down, Coran and Shiro on either side as the Paladins are in front of her
"I'm so sorry about your father, Princess" Shiro says.
"We all are" Y/N adds.
"I'm so sorry about your father Princess"
"Thank you. But that was not my father" Allura stands up "The real King Alfor was a great man and a great father. He may not be here with is anymore, but his dream lives on through all of us, and his legacy is Voltron"
==
Hours later, when everyone has went to bed. Shiro is in the control room, looking into space. He the sound of the door opening, but doesn't turns around.
"What are you doing up so late?" A voice says. They sit next to him and he turns his head to see Y/N.
"Thinking. You?"
"Soul may be small but she's a loud snorer" Shiro chuckles "So watcha thinking about?" Shiro sighs, looking back into Space.
"Just what Sendak said" Y/N looks at him with a frown.
"What did he say?" Shiro's eyes tear up, but he refuses to cry "Shiro? Hey, it's okay-"
"He called me a monster...that I shouldn't be leader of Voltron" Shiro says "He said that even you're disgusted in me" Y/N's smiles softly.
"And you shouldn't believe that for one second" Shiro looks to her and goes to talk but Y/N stops him "I don't care what you look like Shiro, you are my brother. That piece of metal doesn't make me think of you any less" Shiro looks down at his arm.
"But I killed people..."
"You killed them so that you could survive" Y/N sighs "Do you trust me?" Shiro looks at Y/N with confusion.
"What?"
"Do you trust me?"
"Yes" Y/N takes Shiro's metal hand and places it around her neck "What, what are you doing?!"
"Squeeze" She states. Shiro looks at her in horror "Squeeze as hard as you can" Shiro pulls his hand away quickly, staring at her hard.
"Why did you do that for? I could have hurt you?"
"If you really are a monster, then you would have squeezed my neck, I gave you an easy chance and a monster would have took it, no hesitation" Shiro looks at her "Your not a monster, Shiro. Your just a man who's been broken... and needs someone to help fix him" Y/N says "You may be a pain in my butt sometimes, but your my brother. And I wouldn't change you for the universe" Y/N is suddenly hugged by a teary Shiro.
"I love you" Shiro says, hugging her tight. Y/N hugs back, smiling softly.
"I love you, too" The siblings watch the stars, knowing that as long as they are together, nothing will happen.

in here alone, together - klance
Summary:
Space is vast and mostly empty, so much so that getting lost is easy. The universe keeps expanding and Lance gets further away from home with each passing second. The thing keeping him in orbit is the man with a mullet at the centre of his own universe. Or: a quiet night filled with want, desire, and restraint.
Inspired by this art: https://www.tumblr.com/midnightlie/190896795129/blue?source=share
Genre: Romantic Fluff, Falling in Love
POV: Third Person
Read on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/51493681
Note: I miss them sometimes <3
He starts with a quiet gasp, a short sharp intake of breath as Lance’s eyes fly open to see nothing. The darkness overwhelms his senses and he sits up slowly, swinging his legs over the edge of the bunk as he waits for his vision to adjust, taking time to steady his breathing and not disturb the boy next to him.
In time, the soft blue glow of the ship’s corridor lighting makes itself known through the small strip at the base of the door – a design flaw that surely would not save the paladins should the ship breach – and Lance begins to make out the outline of his hands clutching the mattress as well as his legs and bare feet. The details remain unfocused and Lance doesn’t try to make them out, moving his hand to rest on his chest. His heart thuds at a steady rate but he waits, anticipating its halting or taking off away from him – vivid colours and sounds echo around in his mind, the remnants of his dreams reluctant to leave him.
The whirring of the castle thrums through each room, its slow steady movement unnoticeable to its inhabitants. Their enemies and allies are planets and galaxies away, but they still exist in the minds of the brave paladins and are most prominent in the awake paladin. Lance’s nails dig into his chest, keeping his eyes fixed to the floor beneath him as the images of friends and foes dance around his head.
The dancing ceases when fingers make purchase on the hem of Lance’s shirt, skin grazing his back – Lance shudders, welcome to it.
 “You’re awake.”
Keith’s words are quiet, barely puncturing the silence. Lance’s response is quieter, his hum vibrating in his throat. The other paladin keeps his fingers slightly twisted in the cotton but makes no other movements, though Lance can feel his eyes boring into his back. The air thickens and he finds himself swallowing, trying not to choke.
The two so often find themselves at each other’s throats, exchanging harsh words and insults – even as they had learned to work better as a team, interactions between them are not without light teasing or mockery, Lance’s mouth turned up at the corners with smugness and Keith’s eyebrows furrowed with irritation. So, it came as a shock to Lance to find out that, when alone, he cannot find the words to say and that so-quick-to-anger Keith softens his tongue and intensifies his expression in a manner that both excites and scares Lance. When alone, their conversations were civil, then they became personal, and now…
Now they are this. And here Lance is, in Keith’s quarters for the umpteenth time, something he can no longer claim is an accident because it isn’t and it hasn’t been for a long while.
The mattress shifts behind him and a gentle breath fans on the back of Lance’s neck. One of Keith’s fingers traces a small circle on his back over his shirt, and he represses another quiver of anticipation.
“How dangerous,” Keith murmurs with no bite. “You’re thinking.”
“I know,” Lance replies, eyes fluttering shut. “Sorry.”
Keith’s hand disappears and Lance instantly wants to complain, but he stays silent – until he feels a feather-light touch where his neck meets the curve of his shoulder. The squeak that escapes him is embarrassing, but Keith doesn’t laugh.
“Don’t apologise – let’s lie back down. You need to sleep.”
The low pitch and smooth tone of Keith’s voice combined with the pads of his fingers brushing against him fills Lance with a heat that threatens to overcome him, but he refuses to bolt – too many times had he left before anything could occur, and Lance is tired of running.
So, the two manoeuvre themselves so they’re both laid back on the mattress, the width made for one only allowing so much space between them. Lance lies on his back and Keith balances on his side, body facing Lance, eyes never leaving his face. Lance has to clasp his hands together to hide how they are trembling, his eyes fixed upon the ceiling, unable to bring himself to look at Keith. His will is trying to run away from him and he isn’t quite sure if he’s ready to surrender himself to it, especially when Keith is looking at him like that.
Keith Kogane has always been intense: at first, Lance thought it was a stuck-up nature combined with a myriad of anger issues and all around dickishness. Though Lance could be brash with his words, they were quick and constant – Keith would stew and then lash out with short sharp sentences that were brief but got his feelings across. Lance could sulk like nobody’s business, but he was very good at making it everyone’s business, whereas Keith was quiet, brooding at the edge of the room in a manner that didn’t invite attention (with the exception of Lance’s).
But when they’re alone, Keith’s intensity manifests in another way: his words are still quiet, but his sentences lengthen and divulge into details he usually avoids. Sometimes his eyes fix on a point in the room and do not move when he talks, but when he listens, his gaze holds Lance’s with a concentration that Lance may have teased him for if it didn’t entrance him. The colour of Keith’s eyes, the dark indigo that most definitely were influenced by his Galra heritage, pull Lance in – Keith once asked him if there was something on his face that made him stare so, and the self-conscious expression that overcame Keith had Lance exclaim far too loudly that he thought his eyes were ‘just really cool’. It was the first time Lance had ever seen Keith blush – it was also the first time Keith had smiled in a way that weakened Lance at the knees.
The indigo is now an inky black in the absence of light – somehow, it’s more intense and Lance is weakened still.
The pair do not speak and the atmosphere begins to weigh on Lance’s chest as he finds it harder to draw even breaths. Their bodies are barely an inch apart but he longs for Keith to touch him again – he can sense the heat coming off the other boy and it scorches him.
After several agonising minutes, Lance rolls to lie on his side away from Keith, balling his fists up as he hugs his arms to his body. He wills himself to calm himself down, letting out deep breaths as the urge to get up and run back to his room begins to catch hold in his head. A thin layer of sweat covers his body and sticks his pyjamas to his skin, and Lance has the ludicrous idea to pull off his clothes.
He shifts slightly and feels his left shoulder bump against Keith – what part of him, Lance doesn’t know – and he realises that they’re closer than he initially thought, which sends a jolt through him. Keith’s breathing is steady and shallow, now a whisper on his nape.
It takes a second for Lance to swallow, licking his drying lips as he asks: “can you sleep?”
It takes several seconds for Keith to respond, and when he does, his hand comes to touch Lance’s hip, eliciting a gasp.
 “No.”
The hand is trembling against Lance, fingers spasming as they almost hover over his pyjama shorts. As Keith shuffles forward by the smallest degree, he lets out a shaky sigh.
And Lance knows that Keith is just as overcome as he is. And so, he moves so his back connects with Keith’s chest. Keith’s forehead comes into contact with the back of his neck.
Keith’s hand flexes on his hip, inhaling heavily through his nose as it dares to move upwards, trailing up Lance’s waist and ribs, moving over his shirt that simultaneously makes Lance feel grateful and greedy. As Keith reaches his left shoulder blade, he traces back down his spine, fingers splayed as he reaches the hem of his top. When he dips underneath and touches the skin of his back, Lance lets go of his held breath, his vocal cords whistling slightly as he does. Keith repeats the movement, the moisture from his hands sticking on occasion to Lance’s equally sweaty skin, though neither care. The heat becomes a fire that runs through Lance’s veins as Keith’s touch becomes more hungry, his shaking fingers gripping onto him as he explores Lance at a rate that is both too fast and all too slow.
The pressing against his nape intensifies as Keith’s nose nudges against Lance, his top lip occasionally grazing him as Keith gasps. As the hand moves to caress his stomach, Lance arches his back when a pair of lips secure themselves onto his neck. The sensation is both dry and wet, Keith’s bitten and peeling lips contrasting to the warmth of his mouth and tongue that glide over Lance’s skin. He tastes him with fever, uncertainty mixed with desire as Keith’s careful kisses begin to lose control, moving towards the left juncture where his neck and shoulder meet.
Lance keens when Keith bites down gently, his left arm having unwound from his body and is now reaching behind him, clutching onto Keith’s left thigh. His restraint is long forgotten, the gasps and whines leaving his mouth shameless. When he pushes his body even closer to Keith’s, the feeling of Keith’s want both scares and excites Lance, and the sound he pulls from Keith only heightens his own desire.
Half of Lance’s body has moved so he’s almost lying on Keith, pushing himself closer and closer and closer still. Keith’s hand has travelled all across his front and has now come to hold onto Lance’s throat, touch soft but desperate. The sensation of Keith’s fingers and his mouth made Lance lightheaded, rolling his eyes to the back of his head as he let himself become Keith’s.
His mouth comes to kiss Lance’s jaw near his ear. “Lance,” Keith growls, his voice rumbling against his skin. “Please – please, can I…?”
Keith is asking, begging Lance, and the words go straight to the pit of flames stoking in Lance’s abdomen. Keith’s fingers come to cradle the right side of his face, and Lance forces down the last bit of fear eating at him, turning his head to face the other boy.
Their faces are but a couple of centimetres apart and the inky eyes stare into his own, pupils blown and intoxicating. Keith’s hair is mussed and his mouth agape, lips slightly swollen. His chest is moving rapidly up and down, his own shirt rucked up so Lance can just make out his lower abdomen and hips. Lance doesn’t need light to know that Keith’s face and neck are flushed.
He is the most beautiful thing Lance has ever seen and for a moment, they are transfixed, frozen in the moment before everything changes forever.
And Lance breaks first, closing the gap between them. His lips capture Keith’s, left hand leaving his leg to touch his cheek.
The fire turns into an inferno as Keith groans into Lance’s mouth, setting him ablaze.
Their awkwardly bent limbs move and their inexperienced kisses adjust as the two cling onto each other: Lance twists his body so their fronts are flush against each other, quick to tangle his fingers into the mullet he hates so much. Keith’s hands move to grip his waist under his top, nails raking up and down his back every so often. Gasps and sighs pass between the two as they explore the forbidden, indulge in their shared long-time desires, and hold each other with a belief that if either one of them let go, then it will all end.
Every inch of Lance’s body is like the surface of the sun, burning and brilliant – Keith’s touch is like a lick from a flame, consuming and engulfing him. Lance moves to put his weight on Keith, slotting a leg between his, their chests crushed together. They are the closest two people could really be and yet he still wants more, still needs more, if not to make up for all that they have missed, all that they had avoided due to fear of rejection or change. And even now, a trace of fear stains Lance’s heart as he feels his control slipping away from him, and he pulls Keith’s hair a little too tightly.
The moan that Keith emits is unlike any sound Lance has even imagined the boy was capable of making, but he knows he must hear again. In an instant, their bodies are rolling once more and Lance has the air taken from him as he finds himself pushed into the bunk, now lying on his back as Keith hovers over him, gasping for breath. Their legs are interlocked and Keith’s hands are either side of Lance’s head and he’s staring at him like a blind man who is seeing the stars for the first time, and Lance feels all the emotion he holds for this boy alone surge to the surface, sticking in his throat and burning his eyes.
Keith descends with a careful precision, moving down to kiss his throat, tongue and teeth careful but overwhelming, hands coming to run through Lance’s hair and massage his scalp. He grazes against Lance as he trails towards his collarbones and the sensation of their bodies moving with each other with mutual trembling desire threatens to kill Lance before he is given the chance to explore such a terrifying and wonderful thing, and he clings to Keith’s shirt, his cries wanton. The material creeps up, exposing Keith’s back, his muscles contracting as he shudders under the feel of Lance’s nails scrabbling for purchase upon his skin.
Keith moves back up, kissing all the way along Lance’s jaw, lips soft and adoring. With slow deliberation, he places kisses along his cheeks, his nose, his forehead, his chin. When a tear forms at the outside corner of Lance’s left eye, Keith kisses it away and then lightly brushes his lips over his closed eyelids. Lance simply quivers under such a tender touch, hands resting on either side of Keith’s ribcage, waiting impatiently for the attention to return where he longs for it most.
When the sensation disappears and several seconds pass, Lance opens his eyes to see Keith gazing at him, not quite smiling but expression soft, his eyes mirroring Lance’s burning. His hands come to cup Lance’s face, thumbs still shaking as they stroke along his cheeks.
Lance moves his own hands to copy Keith, letting his fingers entwine with the black hairs that slightly obstruct Keith’s face. His vision is blurred but every detail of his features shine through and Lance believes that he could die here and be content with it.
“Are you okay?” Keith’s voice is barely above a whisper but strains with affection and concern. He touches the corner of Lance’s eye again, capturing the moisture ready to fall.
Lance nods and pulls their faces towards each other, kissing Keith’s bottom lip. “Never better,” he mumbles against him, pressing another chaste kiss to his top lip. “Keith, I – I can’t stop – I want –”
Keith kisses back, furrowing his eyebrows with the intensity of it all. “Me too.”
Because they have wanted this for longer than either of them care to admit. To be thrust into space with no warnings or plans and to form a universe-saving team without an ability to refuse with a group of people that they either like, don’t know, or despise for no real reason is an isolating experience, and neither one wanted to say that for them both, the person they despised the most became their solace in this vast unending adventure, and over time had crept their way into their heart. And now, finally, here they are.
The imperfect formation of their lips, the hunger in how they open their mouths to each other, the overwhelming sheer intimacy of their tongues touching becomes all at once too much for Lance. Sobs begin to wretch their way out of him and he cries freely because he is so happy and enamoured and frightened, because his heart has been cracked open in the early hours of the morning and is spilling its contents out in front of the person he has admired since his first days at the Garrison, because he is more vulnerable than ever and has something so beautiful that could be lost tomorrow if one thing goes wrong.
Keith pulls away, looking down at Lance with worry and amour, and it only makes him cry harder. And Keith, who usually blanches at tears, wraps his arms around Lance in an instant, pulling him to his chest as they roll once more. Lance burrows his face into the crook of Keith’s neck and chokes on his sobs, relishing in his warmth as the inferno calms, smouldering inside the two hearts of the embracing pair.
When Lance wakes to the morning announcement, he is still nestled into Keith, whose hand is so gentle on the back of his head, so careful that he may fall apart if he loses concentration. His other hand is squeezing Lance’s fingers, held between their chests with an intimacy that neither one ever wanted to forget.

This is the droid you're looking for
I just uploaded the fifth chapter for my Voltron / Detroit Become Human crossover fic This is the droid you're looking for. I've got 7-8 chapters written already and I think I'm gonna need about 12 to finish the story. That's gonna take me a while, but that's okay. I really like working on this fic, even though I don't have a lot of time to do it. I've created my own little world, with Voltron characters in a DBH/science fiction setting. Some DBH characters will turn up in a cameo. I'm having fun :-)
For those of you who haven't gotten wind of the fic yet: Lance is an android and Keith is a traumatised space soldier with Galra features.
Uploading new chapters isn't gonna happen at regular intervals, but you can always subscribe to the fic (or my account) on Ao3 to get a notification.
Go check out the fic
Here's some bits and pieces from chapter 5:
Fragment #1
Kosmo jumps on the bed again, settling down against Keith’s back. Lance sits on Keith’s other side, back in his reading position with his back against the headboard. He’s not reading now, he’s studying his friend’s face. The half-Galran keeps his eyes scrunched shut, his hands balled into fists, close to his face.  Lance eases his hand to the top of Keith’s head, gently pulling his hair back strand by strand. He keeps track of Keith’s heart rate, noting how his actions help calm him down further. When all the hairs are smoothed back, Lance moves his fingers lightly to Keith’s ear. It’s a little larger than a human ear, mainly because it’s more pointy and covered in purple fur. Short fuzzy hairs on the surface of his ear and longer, sturdier hairs along the rim. He traces the ridges of the ear with his finger, chuckling softly when it flicks away from his touch. He cups the ear with his whole hand, moving down to scratch lightly behind it.
Fragment #2
His systems boot way too early. The bedroom is still dark when his motion and auditory sensors alert him to action. “Where do you think you’re going?” he asks as soon as his speech program is up. Keith’s hand freezes on the door handle and he slowly turns his upper body back towards the bed. “I…” “What am I? Some bad one night stand you desperately want to get away from?” Lance swings his legs off the bed, but he stays seated at the edge. “Why would you sneak off at five in the morning without saying anything?” Keith hangs his head, body now fully turned and leaning against the door. His loyal wolf is beside him, looking from his owner to the android. “I… You’re right, this looks bad.” “You’re damn right it does.” The pained expression that crumples Keith’s face makes Lance backpedal. He decides to take a different approach. “It certainly looks like bad hygiene! You slept all night using a wolf as your blanket and you want to go outside without even taking a shower first. What are you? Some caveman?” K’s bewilderment is short lived. “Pretty sure the nanny bot gave me a regular blanket,” he protests, rolling his eyes with the sentiment that sounds fonder every time he says it out loud. Lance thinks he can hear him say it under his breath right now. “You’re weird.” “And now the nanny bot is offering you the use of his shower. Or the blanket again, if you want to sleep some more.” Lance shrugs, either option is okay with him, one some more than the other.
Fragment #3
“I’m pretty sure it’s eight, counting you in.” Lance looks around the room again, slowly, with Keith following his gaze.  “It’s still seven, but it’s an easy mistake to make.” Lance’s confused pout makes him chuckle and Keith gestures towards the pool table. “The man and woman over there are both from Vimlori VI.” “What? But they look nothing alike!” “Do all Earth people look alike to you?” Keith crosses his arms in front of his chest and raises one eyebrow at Lance. The android looks quickly between Keith and the aliens by the pool table. “But…” he sputters. “They’re not even the same colour!”  He realises his mistake when Keith’s eyebrow goes even higher and his stare becomes a little harder. “Says the Hispanic android.” Lance knows when his marks go yellow and if he could blush he is sure his cheeks would be tinted a nice shade of red. His shoulders sag and he flails his hands in despair. “I don’t get it!”

and then the paladins ARRIVE the doors swing open and there's a wave of interest across the room because the paladins of voltron are lowkey a big deal
keith scans them all briefly feeling simultaneously more whole than he has in months and also so blasted to smithereens it's insane
his eyes fall on lance and he physically cannot tear himself away
drinking in the sight of him like a man in the desert
allura is clowning on him so bad and he doesn't even care he's down so BAD
lance is actually a little shy, hasn't made eye contact with keith just yet
he did a scan of the room, knows keith is there, can guess he's probably looking
but it's that thing where you haven't seen your partner in so long and you're a little afraid to find out if something has changed or not, feeling queasy like they're a stranger, and it's silly but the butterflies dont care to be rational about it
so lance is running his hand through his hair repeatedly and fiddling with his fingers and looking back and forth between hunk and pidge like a lifeline
hunk is here for the drama he clocks keith Fast and is like dude,,,, he's so in love with you omg
lance has that funny feeling though and maybe doesn't want to crowd keith, steers the group of himself hunk and pidge towards a table with snacks and other important people to make conversation with instead
and lance is good at this part, loves this part of saving the Universe, but tonight he is flighty and distracted because his every atom knows keith is Right Over There In This Very Room Oh My God
keith's mouth has gone dry doesn't remember how to blink he's actually so fucked
finally, finally they make eye contact across the room
and that funny nervous buzzing melts away into Warm and Good and I Missed You and it is suddenly very clear that they have to go be together right now immediately and everything will be okay, that the time spent apart didn't change anything
but wait ! the dinner is officially starting people are being directed to their seats ! oh no !
lance makes nice with whoever it is who's next to him but keeps looking down and across the table at keith
keith is useless he just looks at lance the entire time
hunk is kicking his feet giggling pidge is fake retching
shiro is dragging a hand down his face because jesus christ keith ur actually so embarrassing
allura clears her throat and rises to stand at the head of the table, all eyes on her
she's about to start the first of her prepared remarks when suddenly lance is also standing
she blinks at him and he blinks back and everybody at the whole event is glancing back and forth between them
she's like "...yes, lance?" but not in a judgy way that's her bestie she just wants to know what he wants
lance also would love to know why he stood up he's not really sure ngl did not think this one through
he looks at keith and down at his hands and up at allura and back at keith
hunk is holding his breath pidge is covering her mouth with both hands shiro might just pull his hair out he should be at the CLUB
lance goes "one sec 'lura" and then he's stepping aside, grabbing the back of his chair, and starts dragging it with him as he marches down the length of the table
IT MAKES THAT TERRIBLE SQUEAKING SOUND AS IT DRAGS THE WHOLE WAY
IT'S SO AWFUL EVERY JAW IS ON THE FLOOR
THE PALADINS ARE DYING PIDGE IS CRYING REAL TEARS SHE'S TRYING SO HARD NOT TO CACKLE
keith's jaw is also on the floor as he watches his boyfriend round the far corner of the table and continue in his direction
allura is biting down something fierce on her lower lip god she loves them so much
lance finally, finally arrives near where keith is sitting and bends down to whisper to the alien next to him, asking them to please scootch over just a tad thank you so much
it's literally so awkward
keith is grinning so hard it hurts even though he's pretty sure hunk is videoing this whole thing from across the table
lance wedges his chair in next to keith's and plops down
hasn't even really acknowledged keith yet but they're so close their thighs are pressed together
lance just smiles up at allura and is like "alright carry on" angel emoji prayer hands emoji
indulgent established klance long-distance boyfriends coalition paladins/BOM keith reunion event GO:
keith gets to the dinner early
he had to ask kolivan to put him on the list as one of the BOM agents going and if that dude ever laughed at anything keith would swear he was laughing at him when he uninvited somebody else to put keith on the list
it's this gorgeous bigass hall with lovely vaulted ceilings and the biggest longest table keith has ever seen
aproned aliens are in set-up mode, scurrying around setting utensils and plates and namecards and chairs all around this table
keith has his mask up and everything and he nods respectfully at some of the staff as he starts to walk the length of the table
it's been too long since he saw the team he knows that and they know it too
he knows they miss him, knows it in his bones that they miss him at least some fragment as much as he aches for them (which is so much all the time)
pidge hacked a touchpad to let it transmit through the signal jammer outfitted at the BOM base so he does get to message and call home sometimes but tbh he's not on-base very often before he's jetting off to the next crazy mission halfway across the galaxy
anyway he's in this hall scanning the namecards and letting his mind wander while he waits for the guests--but mostly his former team--to show up
he finds his own card next to kolivan's, only it just says "blade of marmora guest" anonymous and replaceable, just like usual
allura is set to be seated at the head of the table with the other important people and key speakers
keith smiles despite himself at the thought of allura pacing the halls of the castleship this past week, running through versions of speeches for anyone who will listen
the smile turns into an ache when he thinks of lance, perched on the kitchen counter, legs swinging, or draped across the lounge couch, head tipped off the edge, listening and humming appraisingly at all the right moments
turning those warm brown eyes to the ceiling and pretending to think hard on it when allura asks him if he thinks she's ready
"of course princess" he'd say, placing a hand on her shoulder and squeezing gently
"I think you were born ready"
because lance has always been good at that, at making you feel like the most capable person in the Universe
halfway down the opposite side of this grandiose table, keith finds what he hadn't known he'd been looking for: four name placards right in a row, each labeled with a name and "Paladin of Voltron"
takashi shirogane, pidge holt, hunk garrett, and lance mcclain
keith frowns sourly at the next name, some alien duke or duchess or whatever the fuck, somebody important who has just won the diplomacy dinner lottery by being offered the seat next to the blue paladin
he looks across the table from here to his own seat, looming positively miles away across and down this long ass mcfreaking table
who made this chart anyway???
keith is still grumping about it as people begin to show up and he shrinks a little into himself, scanning the room for those familiar faces, the anticipation buzzing under his skin
he's so lost in the looking that he forgets himself and gets totally ambushed by a voice right up against his ear
"Getting on just as socially as usual, I see"
he whirls ready to FIGHT but it's allura !!! and the relief and joy at seeing her in person for the first time in multiple space-months is such whiplash that he pitches straight into her open arms and holds tight
when he recovers he takes down the mask and squirms awkwardly
allura is gentle and kind, knows he hates the diplomacy part, knows he's only here because he misses all of them, one of them in particular...
they do small talk for a bit, allura growing worse and worse at hiding her amusement as keith continues to turn and stare at the door with increasing frequency
her eyes are sparkling the way they do when she gossips and she asks him point blank "so, you must be excited to see your boyfriend again"
keith's mind goes blank "n-no" yknow like a liar
she's downright snickering at him and he still can't resist scanning the room
she throws him a bone, tells him the other paladins are running late coming back from the parade but will arrive soon
keith is like coolcoolcool no doubt no doubt but really cannot stop staring at the door and feeling like he might throw up and is his hair okay he didn't really think about this before he showed up, hasn't even seen it in actually days because he's had the suit on, and the suit is DUMB what the fUcK--
they get approached by other diplomats from various coalition planets and allura turns on the schmooze
keith checks his touchpad--there are three messages from lance
"SORRY BABE RUNNIGN LATE"
"c u so SOON :3 <33333333"
"*RUNNING"
" :D "

Note
Love that all paladins are great runners, Hunk runs away from danger, Keith runs into danger, Pidge ran away from home, Shiro runs away from his trauma into nearest certain death, Lance won track race competitions in elementary and middle school and decided that's his personality now
You can't tell me Lance wasn't that dude in middle school who would always win the 100 metre sprints at school sports day, and be super cocky about it. He was the dude who signed up for every running event and won easily, and was a smug bastard about it. King was short, scrawny, but held the power of god, anime, and school popularity in his hands just by being naturally good at running.
Also anon, this is genuinely the funniest fuckin ask I've ever received LMFAOOO. I see no lie whatsoever.

part one
———
Lance keeps his word — it doesn’t take long for him to really get the hang of his telepathy thing, and then he really is in Keith’s head more often than he isn’t.
That’s not entirely fair, Keith supposes. He has a pretty good hang of the telepathy thing too, and Lance showed him early on how to put up a pretty thick mental block if he needs some privacy, or even just a break. He knows how to keep his mindscape quiet and personal, if need be.
But the thing is…he rarely bothers.
He likes having Lance in his head, or vice versa. It’s crazy, and he never would have expected it of himself, but having the constant presence of his best friend in the back of his head; talking, humming, or just being, has turned into a massive comfort.
The desperate loneliness he grew up with, although slowly disappearing over the years he’s had Voltron, has faded into almost nothingness. He likes Lance’s noise in his head. It makes communication during battle a lot easier, too.
He’s yet to feel the rest of the team as strongly in his head — he certainly can’t hold conversations with anyone else — but he feels as if the connection that has been constantly present since they formed Voltron for the first time is stronger, maybe. As if he feels a little closer to all his friends.
That’s really mushy, Lance informs him in his mind. You’re a massive softie marshmallow. I can’t believe I ever thought you were cool.
Keith sits up, abandoning his fourth set of push-ups to find Lance across the training room, doing some sort of gymnastic routine (blatantly showing off for some of the younger members of the Atlas. He’s not even trying to pretend he isn’t, smirking whenever they point at him and whisper to each other in awe when he does a quadruple in-air backflip or something that serves no actual training purpose).
Keith frowns at him. I am so cool.
Are not. You’re a squishy softie marshmallow that cries during Finding Nemo.
Everyone cries during Nemo! Keith defends huffily. It’s a heart-wrenching movie!
Lance doesn’t say anything back, but Keith can feel the impression of his laughter. It’s a hard thing to conceptualise, because he’s not really laughing, and there’s no sound of laughter even in his mindscape, but Keith feels the teasing joy bleeding from him. The best way he’s come to describe it, after weeks of trying to put words to the feeling as he falls asleep, is the feeling he gets when a joke lands, combined with the kind of raw freedom that comes with running in a dead sprint for no reason other than the pleasure of running. Something concentrated and all-encompassing and heart-turning. That’s what Lance’s laughter feels like.
And Keith won’t stand for it. It’s one thing for Lance to tease him with his words, poking fun at him with his wide, sparkling grin, but to make fun of Keith for the thoughts he’s thinking in his own head?
He will not lie down at the dishonour.
Grinning in anticipation, he scoops up his luxite blade, lining up the shot and throwing with deadly accuracy. The blade spins through the air, so fast it whistles, directly at Lance’s head. If he doesn’t dodge, it will kill him.
But Lance will dodge. He knew Keith was going to throw the blade before he even made the decision to throw it.
Gasps ripple through the training room, several people shouting in alarm as the blade comes closer and closer to killing the Red Paladin of Voltron. Milliseconds before it hits, just as someone opens their mouth to scream a warning, Lance moves, faster than the eye can track, pulling out his bayard and transforming it in the same moment, batting Keith’s blade out of the air with his broadsword like it’s a baseball.
He grins, wide and manic and jumping to the challenge, to the spar.
“That all you got, Mullet?” he calls, swinging his blade like the cocky shithead he is. Keith can hear the impression of his laughter again; he’s dizzy with it, drunk off the heady feeling.
“Not even a little bit,” he says, activating his own bayard. Without needing to say a word, they both charge forward at the same time, arms drawn back and swords heavy with potential energy, meeting in the middle of the training room with a clash of their blades, so hard it sends vibrations up their arms.
The shouts of alarm from the rest of the crew turn into whoops of excitement, as people fan out into a circle to give them space. Keith is relatively certain he sees Pidge and Matt organizing bets out of the corner of his eye.
Ready for a show? Lance’s voice echoes in his head. Distantly, he hears Red’s howling roar, the proud lion wrapping her energy with her paladin, gleefully telling Keith how much she looks forward to seeing her cub wipe the floor with him.
She is a very competitive entity, Red. It sparks something in Black, too, who gets up from her perch in a rare display of headstrong pride and wraps her energy around Keith to match.
You’re going to lose, Keith taunts.
Fat chance, Mullet.
Their strikes are less choreographed, now that a real challenge has been issued, and more than their own pride is at stake. There is no real fight here — whether or not Keith wins, he doesn’t truly care.
(But he’d fuckin’ love having something to hold over Lance’s head for a bit. Better if he could be smug in Lance’s head, where he can’t stomp away with a sulk and a claim that Keith was cheating.)
Swordplay with Lance is difficult. It’s always difficult, because Lance uses a sword in every way except how a sword is meant to be used — Keith has seen him use it as a javelin, a bat, even a vault stick — but it’s only gotten harder since Lance has had access to his mind, because Lance hears and feels his every move, anticipating his every trick. Neither of them have managed to win the upper hand for long, and it won’t be long before the other resorts to dirty tactics.
Keith eyes his forgotten luxite blade. He might be the first, actually.
Forcing himself to think of a flurry of random things, practically throwing a wad of unconnected, unsorted thoughts in Lance’s presence in his head to distract him, he dives to the side, reaching for his blade. Lance realises a split second too late to stop him, and his broadsword comes millimetres away from the skin of Keith’s ribcage as he dodges. He closes his fingers around the softened leather of the blade’s handle, and whips around to face his opponent, bayard in his right hand and luxite blade in his left. By the time he’s ready again to fight, even though he’s only taken mere seconds to grab his weapon, Lance has already flipped several meters back, bayard in his hand transformed to his blaster.
Cheater, the both think at the same time, identical smirks on their faces.
Lance fires six quick shots, aiming at vital places in his body. His shots are all true — Lance doesn’t miss — and Keith barely manages to slide out of the way, one of the laser blasts grazing the side of his neck, burning him.
Lance hasn’t bothered to set his gun to stun. Keith can’t blame him. It’s more fun with the risk.
He rushes at Lance, both swords extended, aiming a slash at the Cuban’s arm with one blade and a stab through his torso with the other — he’ll only be able to dodge one. He’ll either have to yield or take a slice, get a painful hit that will slow him down.
Somehow, though, Lance contorts himself, bending his body in a way that it honestly should not be able to bend and narrowly avoiding both blades, hitting the floor with a heavy slam and aiming a sweeping kick for Keith’s knees to take him down with him. Keith jumps to avoid his powerful legs, somersaulting over his head.
“Oh, boo!” someone, who is most definitely Shiro, calls from the crew. Keith almost forgot they were watching, he’s so caught up in the fight. “Come on, Lance! Get his ass!”
If Keith had the time — that is if Lance let up his assault for even one second, which Keith knows he won’t — he’d roll his eyes. Since he doesn’t, he settles for making a mental note to raid Shiro’s room later and steal the last of the Reese’s he packed from Earth.
Oh, that’s diabolical, Lance thinks at him.
Keith grunts, swiping at the hand holding his blaster. If you help me I’ll give you half.
The offer startles a laugh out of Lance, distracting him for just long enough that Keith gains the split-second advantage, placing the blade of his bayard under Lance’s wrist and twisting until Lance is forced to drop his gun or lose his hand.
“Fuck!” several people yell at the same time. Next comes the unmistakable sound of money changing hands.
“Sucks to suck”, Keith taunts, because he can’t help himself.
But Lance looks undeterred. “It does, doesn’t it.” He aims a heavy kick right for Keith’s sternum, and since Keith is too close to move away and not flexible enough to dodge, it lands square where Lance aims it, the heel of his foot knocking the breath from Keith’s lungs and blurring his vision. He drops his swords when the sudden lack of oxygen makes his hands to weak to grip them.
Lance takes advantage of Keith’s momentary weakness, catapulting forward for an assault. Unfortunately for him, his intentions bleed loud and clear through their bond, and Keith hits the floor with a gasp so Lance can’t wrap his legs around Keith’s neck to choke him out.
Lance curses, falling forward with a flail when his assault doesn’t hit, momentum completely overshot. He barely manages to catch himself before his head smacks into Keith’s, and for half a second he stays there, hovering above where Keith lays flat and tense, ready for the next move.
You come here often? Lance teases, and it’s genuinely such a horrible line that Keith groans out loud. They tussle on the ground for several moments, each trying to gain the upper hand, but it’s literally impossible — neither of them is particularly stronger than the other, so there’s no advantage there, and not only are they completely matched, stroke for stroke, punch for punch, but every move they try is completely anticipated by the other. There’s no way that Keith can win. He can try to spend the next who knows how long exhausting Lance, but they’ve already been training for a while — they’re both tired as all hell. And as much as Keith kind of likes Lance’s hands on him, he can’t forget that there are people watching. He has a reputation.
Truce? he offers.
Yeah, Lance concedes, sighing melodramatically. I suppose I’ll let you call a draw.
Keith rolls his eyes as hard as he can — leave it to Lance to be such a goober about it, even though Keith can literally feel that he wants to call it as much as Keith does.
At the exact same time, they spring apart, setting some space in between them to catch their breaths. Once they’ve had a minute to recover, Lance stands, stepping over to Keith and offering his hand. Keith takes it, pulling himself up.
All the gathered crew groans out loud.
“Another draw?” one of the MFE pilots mutters.
“At least they’re wicked cool to watch,” her friend says.
Keith would be able to feel how much Lance preens at that even if they werent telekinetically bonded.
In minutes most of the crew has dispersed, no longer interested now that there isn’t a fight to watch. Some of them go back to whatever equipment they were training on earlier, but many of them file out of the training room entirely, moving onto other things. Keith and Lance make their way over to the rest of the team, collapsing down to the floor next to them.
“You guys are super duper lame,” Pidge informs them, offering them both a water pouch. Keith takes his gratefully, not bothering with the straw and tearing off the top, chugging them whole thing down in one go. Allura looks at him in mild disgust, which makes Keith grin, because if he’s being entirely, one hundred percent honest, he really only did that to get a rise out of her because he knows she hates it when he does that.
“You’re a liar,” Lance responds, sipping on his juice pouch much slower than Keith does. “We just provided you with what was essentially a full-stakes WWE fight, except Keith and I are both way cooler than any of those losers and there were weapons involved.”
“Weapons, but no drama,” Hunk argues. “You guys barely even spoke to each other. Just fight, fight, fight. Where’s the fun in that? Where’s the nuance?”
“I didn’t hear you clown Keith even one time,” Shiro adds, because he’s safely out of range of Keith’s pinching fingers. “Two out of ten Keith and Lance fight. I’m disappointed.”
Keith snorts. “Oh, he clowned me plenty.”
The second the words exit his mouth, he feels Lance go rigid beside him, and a sense of panic comes through their bond.
Shut the fuck up shut the fuck up shut the fuck up, Lance tells him desperately.
Keith looks at him strangely, but Lance doesn’t provide any more context, looking at a particular spot on the floor as if it’s endlessly fascinating.
“He did?” Coran asks. He looks at Keith with a mix of intrigue and something he can’t place, something almost knowing. “I heard nothing of the sort.”
“Well, you wouldn’t hear it, per se,” Keith says slowly.
Lance screams unintelligibly in his head. Keith gets a distinctive picture of him in his own mindscape, yelling in anguish, as the Red Lion laughs herself to tears beside him.
What is your problem? Keith tries to ask, but mind-Lance ignores him in favour of his misery.
Pidge narrows her eyes at the two of them. “Clarify yourself immediately.”
“The mind bond?” Keith says, voice turning up at the end of the sentence like it’s a question. “You know, that Lance worked on with Red. So that we could communicate with each other using our existing emotional bonds with Voltron, just a couple steps farther. I know you guys haven’t used it much, but I just figured you weren’t into it.”
Silence.
Heavy, disbelieving silence. Each other member of the team looks at Keith with dropped jaws and wide eyes, like what Keith just said is something out of a science fiction novel rather than something they all should have been able to do for weeks, since that meeting with Iverson.
Keith suddenly gets the very distinct feeling that he has, perhaps, fucked up.
“Yeah, no shit,” Lance says, a little hysterically. His face is so red that he rivals his own lion. Keith can actually feel the heat pouring off of him, and the feeling from the bond is worse — Lance is dripping with mortification. “How am I in your fucking head and you still can’t follow my instructions?!”
“You didn’t tell me it was supposed to be a secret!” Keith defends, rapidly going red himself.
He can scarcely believe what is happening right now. Lance has told him that the point of the bond was to make the whole team get closer, but he’d only ever bothered to build something with Keith.
The whole time, from the very beginning, his goal was to share his deepest thoughts and feelings with Keith, no one else.
Oh, God.
“Oh, God,” Shiro repeats, but his tone is vastly different from the way Keith was thinking it. His expression can only be described as evilly and maniacally delighted, like every horrible hope of his has come true at once. “This is the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
“Oh my God,” Lance says, the third person to say it. His face is buried in his hands, body half-curled up, like if he compresses himself small enough he can disappear into nothing.
“So that’s why it’s like you two share one half a braincell!” Hunk exclaims. “You actually do!”
Pidge and Allura crack up at Hunk’s joke, or maybe it’s Lance they’re laughing at. Either way, Keith feels his head spin.
Lance has literally manipulated the quintessence of Voltron specifically and only so he can talk to Keith in his own brain, communicate the emotions he doesn’t have the words for.
Manipulated. The quintessence of the universe’s greatest and most mysterious weapon. To find more ways to talk to Keith.
Keith is generally kind of a dense person, but he’s sure as shit not that dense.
“Hey,” he says, shifting away from the rest of his team that has rapidly lost their minds and is laughing themselves hoarse, placing a hand on Lance’s shoulder. “Look at me.”
I am going to kill you dead, Lance threatens in his mind, too embarrassed to make his mouth work.
No, you’re not, Keith replies, and pulls Lance’s hands away from his face, yanking him close and finally pressing their lips together, no longer waiting for some obscure and future proof that Lance loves him. It’s obvious, with the way he softens, melts into Keith’s hands, and the way something warm and soft and floaty flows through their bond.
Lance changed reality for him.
His love could not be more clear.

Headcannon: Lance hates being alone so when it's getting close to bed time he'll sit and watch Keith train until he heads to bed. Lance never asked to share a bed or anything but Keith seems to just know?? Do with this what you will :)
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
-----
He dragged his hand along the cool metal of the castle wall as he walked. It was getting close to bed time which meant lance was going to be alone; something he hated most in the world.
He hated sleeping alone, staying in a bedroom alone, he hated every aspect of not having something living next to him. It was the same routine every single night, he could walk this route with his eyes closed at this point.
Assuming no Galra attack they would all eat dinner together, Lance would help Hunk clean up. Then they would sit and chat for a bit. Sometimes Pidge would join them, sometimes they wouldn't; it was 50/50. If Pidge didn't join them Lance would wonder off and find them and spend some time with them. They would play with ramble chunks of metals as Pidge explained whatever complex project they were working on.
Lance would move on to Coran next, helping him with whatever project he was working on. He would stop and see Allura, chatting with her as she got ready to turn in for the night. He would swing by Shiro and talk about random things. And when everyone was turned in for the night that left one person; Keith.
Lance wasn't sure if he ever slept. If he did maybe it was a couple of hours at a time. Either way he was always on the training deck, without fail until the late hours of the night.
Lance never joined him on the platform, just sitting near the door watching him practice with various weapons. He knew Keith was aware of his presences, and after a couple of weeks he stopped seeming confused when Lance would show up.
They sat for an hour or two before Keith would stop. "End training sequence!" He used the bottom of his shirt to wipe the sweat off his forehead. "Looking a bit sleepy over Lance."
Lance gave a lazy nod, he was about half way from dozing off; he usually was. "Hm are you done for the night?" His voice was a bit muffled with sleep as he stifled a yawn.
"Yeah," Keith began to walk towards his teammate. "Gonna hit the shower, come on."
Lance forced himself to stand up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. They walked towards their bedrooms, Lance trying to swallow the dread of being in his room by himself again.
"Why don't you just go to bed when you feel yourself falling asleep?" Keith asked with a side eye, but his voice held no negative tones.
Lance didn't respond, his reason was stupid in his opinion. He grew up sharing a bed room with two siblings and then Hunk and the Garrison. He wasn't used to being alone, even after all this time in space he hadn't adjusted.
They stopped in front of his door and Lance typed in the code to open it, "see you later mullet."
A hand grabbed his wrist and let go as quickly as it was gripped. Keith's face was red as a tomato and he held his hand like Lance's skin burned him. "Did you want to hang out longer?"
Lance raised his eyebrow in a questioning look; that wasn't part of the routine.
"Uh sure?" He found himself on Keith's bed, admiring the lack of personality in his room while Keith showered. His eyes began to droop a bit more. Keith emerged a couple of moments later, drying his hair with a towel, dressed in a lose shirt and pants.
Lance rubbed his eyes again, trying to come up with a conversation as Keith sat down next to him. "We don't have to talk."
Lance blinked a couple of times, "then why did you want to hang out?"
Keith shrugged and laid down behind Lance, his back to the wall. "I like your silent company."
Lance smiled, more to himself then Keith, "I'm the best company."
Keith hummed, "don't get too cocky now."
They stayed like that for awhile, Lance eventually finding himself slumping down next to Keith. He knew he should have left, he knew he should have gone to his own bed. But even the soft breathing from Keith soothed him.
Keith made a small grunt noise as Lance laid down next to him, already drifting off himself.
I can lay here for the night, he looked at Keith's sleeping face, and he closed his eyes, letting Keith's soft breathing lull him to sleep.

I hope I did this idea justice <3
Thank you!

keithtober🔪🎃💢 week three: birthday🎉 or gay
keith decides that the best way to spend his birthday is driving around town and getting free food from restaurants. lance is perplexed, but supportive.
ko-fi | read on ao3
--
The moment Keith wakes up, he reaches over to his bedside table, turns off his alarm, and grabs the piece of paper he’d written up last night.
It’s do or die. Today is the only day he can accomplish this. The list of restaurants stares back at him, promising hours of commuting and awkward conversation.
Keith turns over and nudges Lance awake—not unkindly. Lance stirs a little bit, murmuring under his breath, and then opens his eyes blearily.
“What...Why are you awake? It’s early, it’s your—” Lance starts, cuts himself off, and then sits up in a sudden burst of wakefulness and energy. He’d gone to bed without his shirt on last night, and Keith allows himself a single moment of distraction, drinking in the always-pleasing sight of Lance’s smooth brown skin and chest. “It’s your birthday!” Lance finishes in a high-pitched, slightly panicked tone.
He turns to Keith, then, a broad smile stretching across his face, the sleepiness from before vanishing.
“Happy birthday, Keith!” he says, pulling Keith close for an unexpectedly strong hug, given he’s just woken up. Keith laughs, amused that Lance had worked himself up into excitement without him even having to do or say anything. It’s endearing, and sweet.
“Thanks,” Keith says, voice muffled from where his cheek is pressed into Lance’s shoulder. Lance squeezes him once more, and then lets go, giving him a sly smile.
Keith’s breath catches as Lance lays a hand low on his hip, tightening ever so slightly. “Want one of your gifts now? Since you woke us up so early…”
Lance starts sliding his hand down Keith’s body, and Keith swallows, momentarily torn. He shakes himself off, though; he’s got no time for this! He has a mission, and god damn him if he isn’t going to complete it this time.
Gently clasping his hands around Lance’s wandering one, Keith removes it from his person and shakes his head forlornly.
“I’d love to,” he begins emphatically, leaning forward to quickly kiss Lance’s cheek as he registers his confused expression, “but I got things to do today. And I’m hoping you’ll help me with them?”
Lance blinks and arches an eyebrow. “What kind of things?” he asks suspiciously.
In response, Keith brandishes his list of restaurants, grinning. “I made this list a few months ago. It’s every restaurant within a 20-mile radius of us that offers free food on peoples’ birthdays.”
Realization dawns on Lance’s face. “Wait,” he begins, disbelief etching itself into his tone, “you’re not seriously planning to—”
“Go to every one of these restaurants today and get my free shit?” Keith grins and folds the list up, slipping it into his pajama pocket. “Yes. That’s exactly what I’m planning.”
There’s a light thump as Lance’s head lands back onto his pillow. “Oh my god,” he says with feeling. “You’re insane. Who wants to spend their birthday running around to a bunch of chain restaurants?”
“That feeling is exactly what they’re banking on!” Keith fully orients himself toward Lance, sitting cross-legged on the bed, eyes bright with conviction and determination. “These places reason that you’ll probably only go to one restaurant on your birthday, not all of them. So they don’t consider it an industry risk to offer this kind of thing in the first place.”
“I don’t think it really hurts any of these places to give you one free meal one day a year,” Lance points out skeptically. Keith huffs.
“Maybe not individually. But I’m still kind of getting one over on the restaurant chain industry as a whole, you know? These meals’ll last me days after today.”
Lance sighs and mutters, “If they don’t go bad first...”
Ignoring Lance’s silly concerns, Keith swings his legs over the edge of the bed, planting his feet firmly on the floor. “Well, I’m getting dressed,” he declares, standing up. His words are met with a loud, resounding groan from Lance. “I want you to come with me, but it’s your choice. Like, I’ll be mad if you don’t come, but it’s your choice.”
Keith suspects that the only reason Lance doesn’t throw a pillow at him as he makes his way to their shared closet is because it’s his birthday, if Lance’s murderous glare is anything to go by.
Within the next hour, however, Lance and Keith are climbing into Keith’s small, blazing red car. Keith’s always been convincing like that. Lance is still yawning sleepily in the passenger seat, though, and to be fair to him, it’s barely 9AM and Lance rarely gets up before 10 on his days off.
“Our first stop,” Keith declares, backing out of the parking lot, “is Starbucks. Think that’ll help you stop being so sleepy?”
Immediately, Lance lights up, and Keith can just hear him running through which Frappuccino he’s going to get in his head. He raises his eyebrows at Keith playfully first, though. “Really? You’re willing to go to Starbucks? Isn’t that a bit corporate for you?”
“I’m not actually giving them money,” Keith points out, and maybe because it’s a good argument or maybe because it’s Keith’s birthday, Lance doesn’t bother to respond. He merely rolls his eyes and takes out his phone, scrolling through the Starbucks app (one that Keith had recently downloaded, so yes, it actually exists somehow) and talking out loud about the pros and cons of Pumpkin Spice versus Caramel Frappuccino.
If Keith is being honest, he has no idea what to get at Starbucks. It’s not somewhere he goes regularly, mostly based on principle, but also just because their closest Starbucks is never on Keith’s way to anything. He could ask Lance, but their tastes in coffee are rather...different. Meaning, Lance does not have taste in coffee and instead has taste in vanilla syrup and milk with a little coffee added, while Keith actually does have taste in coffee because he drinks real coffee. Simple.
They pull up to the carbon-copy Starbucks building with its boxy stature and brown bricks and make their way inside, rubbing their hands together against the chill of the air. When they approach the counter, the barista smiles at them.
“Hi, what can I get started for you?” he says, and Keith takes a moment to appreciate the artful fall of his curly black hair across his forehead. He looks extremely fashionable.
Keith swallows. Is he about to look like a fucking idiot?
Thankfully, Lance steps in to order first. “Can I get a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino, please?” he says, meeting the barista’s sleepy smile with a flashier one of his own. The barista gives him a weird look, huffs out a laugh, and then nods, inputting the item.
“Sure can. Anything for you?” He turns to Keith.
“Actually, uh...” Keith fumbles with his phone and opens up the Starbucks app, navigating to the “Rewards” section like he’s practiced. He turns the screen to the barista, who peers at it. “It’s my birthday? I get a free drink, I think.”
“Oh!” The barista nods quickly. “Happy birthday. In that case, let me finish up his transaction, then we can do yours.”
“Thanks.”
Lance gives Keith an encouraging smile before handing over his money, and Keith takes these last few seconds to anxiously stare at the menu, trying to decide what to order.
Finally, once Lance has gotten out of the way and Keith steps forward, he thinks he knows what to get.
“Can I get a Caramel Macchiato with...less sugar?”
The barista gives Keith a funny look. “Less sugar?”
Fuck. Keith falters, “Um, yeah...Do you not put sugar in your drinks?”
“We do, but—” The barista cuts himself off with a laugh, shaking his head. “You don’t come here often, do you?”
“How’d you guess?” Keith responds flatly, making the barista smile more. He clears his throat.
“I think I know what to get you. What size? Small, medium, large?”
“Large.”
The transaction goes smoothly after that, and Keith won’t deny the rush of satisfaction he gets when he doesn’t even have to take out his card or cash. Their drinks get to them in what seems to Keith to be record time, and he watches with only a slightly sick stomach as Lance excitedly sucks on his cold, milkshake-like drink.
“That’s not even coffee anymore,” he says, only a little judgmental. Lance snorts.
“It’s worse than you think. This is the cream version. There literally isn’t coffee in here at all.” Keith’s mouth falls open, and Lance cackles, swinging an arm around Keith and giving him a smacking kiss on the cheek.
“You’re disgusting,” Keith mutters, scrubbing at his face.
He takes a sip of his coffee, and is pleasantly surprised—it’s not overly sweet at all! In fact, it’s actually pretty good. He tells Lance this, and Lance arches an eyebrow, unconvinced, and takes Keith’s cup to try it himself.
His face screws up in something akin to pain immediately after, and he lurches away from the cup as if it’s hurt him.
“What the fuck,” he says, turning the cup around with hateful eyes. “What did they—oh my god.” Lance shoves the cup in Keith’s face and points at the label. Keith only gets as far as his name before Lance is exclaiming, “There’s literally no vanilla in this, Keith.”
Keith has no idea what that means, but Lance’s horrified face tells him plainly that it’s not good or normal. He shrugs—if it tastes good, does it really matter?
The rest of the day goes much like that first trip to Starbucks. They hit up several different restaurants even before noon—Red Robin, Applebees, Chili’s, Chipotle, Noodles & Company, Qdoba, Steak N’ Shake, and Waffle House, to name a few. It’s a road trip of American staples, and as Keith looks through the mirror at his backseat, nearly overflowing with food already, he’s stricken with nerves and hesitantly asks Lance if he’s making a mistake.
“Oh,” Lance replies, waving a hand vaguely around and talking through a mouthful of (free) fries, “probably.”
Their next stop is Baskin Robins, wherein Lance somehow isn’t sugared-out enough from the Frappuccino to abstain from getting himself a birthday cake ice cream along with Keith’s—Keith decides to eat his that moment as well, so it won’t melt. The treat gives them both silly blue lips, and they both giggle and kiss in the car until the color is gone. Krispy Kreme, Longhorn Steakhouse (“Not as good as Texas Roadhouse,” Keith sniffs upon entry), and Jack in the Box are next, filling Keith’s car up even more. The smell of food begins to permeate the air to the point that Keith feels nauseous the second he sits back down at the wheel. Even Lance, who doesn’t let food-related illness bother him too much, looks a little green by the end of it.
Keith looks helplessly down at his crumpled list. They’re just barely over halfway through. He feels ill. His car is overflowing with food—free food, yes, but in the end just...food. Keith wonders if his appetite will ever return. The longer he spends doing this, the more he’s convinced it won’t.
“Hey, Keith...” Lance ventures as they’re driving to the next destination, Denny’s. “I know you wanted to do this, but...”
Keith groans. He knew this was coming. “It feels like losing to give up now, though...” he all but whines, sadly flipping on his turn signal. They’re only five minutes from Denny’s right now.
He hears rather than sees Lance shuffle in his seat. “What if I told you that I...have something we need to get to soon? So we should go home and get ready?”
Keith raises his eyebrows. “What is it?”
Lance sighs. “Oh, you know...” he begins, his voice doing that high-pitched thing it always does when he’s trying to avoid saying something, “just a, uh...reservation?”
Keith’s answering silence is brought by confusion, whereas Lance’s is coated with dread. It goes on long enough that Lance huffs out an “oh my god” and continues,
“Like…at a restaurant?”
Keith actually sits back further in his seat, though he manages to keep his eyes steadfastly on the road. “You...made us dinner reservations?” he asks calmly.
Lance nods. “At Sugiyama.”
Sugiyama. The best Japanese restaurant in town, the one he’d only been able to go to once before because Shiro had brought him and was willing to pay. It’s expensive, and delicious, and perfect for his birthday.
Damn Lance.
“Why the fuck would you let me do this if you had reservations for us at Sugiyama?”
“Well!” Lance’s hands fly out in front of him, and Keith can see him waving them around from the corner of his eye. “I just! You seemed really determined! I didn’t want to ruin that. Plus, it’s still free food!”
“Jesus Christ.” If Keith could, he’d slam his head into the steering wheel. As it is, though, he just turns into the nearest parking lot—a random church, go figure—puts the car in park, and finally turns to face Lance. “You are so annoying,” he says, and then pulls Lance in for a deep, indulgent kiss. “Thank you.”
When he’s released, Lance looks a little out of it, and he blinks several times before coming back to himself. Once he does, Keith sees his cheeks and ears begin to hue scarlet.
He rubs at the back of his neck. “No problem. I was just saying because, you know, the reservation’s for five, and it’s three thirty now, so we should probably try to go home and get ready—”
Keith exhales a laugh, shaking his head. “Yeah. We should. You’re still gonna help me put all this food away, right?”
“Of course!” Lance seems to be bouncing back, judging by the crinkles near his eyes and the smile on his (slightly red, oops) lips. “I still think this was worth it. You have so much free food now!”
“It’s worth it for my, like, mental satisfaction,” Keith replies airily, putting the car into reverse. “Don’t know if any of this food is actually good though.”
“We’re avoiding the only place I was really worried about. I don’t trust Denny’s,” Lance says, wrinkling his nose. “Reminds me of food goo too much.”
“As if.”
At least if Keith’s going to go through the ordeal of experiencing numerous fast food American cuisines today—even free ones—he’ll be able to end it off with something actually good.

Being slammed into the wall isn’t anything new. It happens fairly regularly, really, which is something he should probably be more concerned about. But hey, he’s constantly fighting aliens that are easily twice his size. Getting thrown kinda comes with the territory.
Which is why, when the Galra he’s fighting tosses him like a ragdoll across the ship’s corridor and his head cracks against the metal surface, Keith isn’t shocked or surprised. His vision goes dark instantly, and when it comes back he’s slumped on the ground, the battle continuing around him. His temples are throbbing from the noise, and there’s an intense pain spreading from one particular point on the back of his skull.
That doesn’t really concern him, though. What does concern him is that he doesn’t remember being in the middle of a battle. He remembers…breakfast? Maybe? And maybe some training afterward. Yeah, he and Shiro had fought one-on-one after breakfast. But now he seems to be on a Galra ship, surrounded by both live Galra soldiers and sentries, and the team is…somewhere nearby, he assumes. They’re not yelling at him in his comms, so that’s a plus.
Oh wait. His comms. Keith pushes away from the wall and sits up, the pain flaring in his head as he does so and the corridor spinning around him. Gritting his teeth, he reaches a hand up tentatively and prods at the worst spot on the back of his head. His gloves come away sticky and wet.
What was he thinking about, again?
A flash of red a few feet away catches his attention. He squints at it, trying to bring it into focus. It’s a helmet, he thinks. His helmet? Yeah, maybe it’s his helmet. He does wear red, after all. Red like his Lion. Like the big, metal, alien spaceship robot Lion that lives in his head now. Crazy. He’s pretty sure she’s trying to say something to him right now, actually, but all he’s getting is flashes of warmth.
A sentry’s sword swings by his head far too close for comfort. Keith jolts backwards, regretting it immensely when the whole spinning and pain thing happens again. Right, the battle. The one he doesn’t remember starting, but should probably work on finishing. Otherwise somebody is probably going to kill him, and Shiro will shoot him if he dies.
Heh. That’d be pretty pointless.
Somehow he gets himself to his feet, swaying slightly, putting one hand on the wall to make sure he doesn’t fall right back down to where he just came from. He feels like something is missing, though. Somewhere, he’s got a…uh… Muscle memory leads him to flex his hand and summon his sword. Sword? Yeah, it’s a sword. It’s also a weird word, a…bayard, that’s it. The word always plays in his mind in Allura’s dialect. Bayaaaard. It’s funny, saying it like that. He snickers a little before remembering that he’s supposed to be actually using the bayard.
That’s easier said than done, though. His arms feel really heavy, like maybe somebody put weights in his armor or something. Probably Lance. When he finally manages to lift the sword and swing it at the nearest sentry, he misses completely. Which is weird, because he was almost positive he saw it go through the robot’s torso. Maybe…yeah, he’s definitely seeing double. Or…triple? Quadruple? It’s really hard to tell, there’s sentries and guards everywhere and it’s almost impossible to pick out which ones are real.
Oh, well. Keith dives into the crowd with all of his usual gusto and none of his usual coordination, swinging wildly. Eventually his sword actually makes contact with something, and he turns to stab it, nearly falling over but righting himself at the last second.
His head really hurts.
“Hey! McMullet! There you are.” Lance appears out of nowhere. Like, poof, there he is. Except there are two of him, too, just like the sentries, and that is not what Keith needs in his life. One Lance is quite enough, thank you.
“We’ve been calling you on the comms and you weren’t answering.” Both the Lances lift their rifles and fire at some distant target. “Guess that’s because you don’t even have your helmet on.”
Oh yeah. His helmet. That was a thing that he’d been thinking about earlier. It’s…on the ground somewhere? He should probably really have it on. But when he spins around to try and figure out which direction it was in, he just gets super dizzy again.
“Hello, are you even listening to me? Why aren’t you wearing your helmet, Mullet?”
A fist knocks against the side of his head. It isn’t hard, but it’s enough to make his vision white out with pain. He might even scream, he’s not sure. He does know that the floor he finds himself staring at while one hand clutches his throbbing head is looking more and more appealing.
“Whoa. Dude. Are you okay?” Lance has his back to him, shooting out into the crowd of enemies, but he glances back over his shoulder at Keith with eyebrows knit together.
Yeah. Of course he’s okay. He’s fine, he just needs Lance to keep his freaking hands to himself. “Don’ do tha’. Tha’s…’s not cool.”
“Yeah. Okay. Something is definitely wrong with you, we need to get you to Shiro.”
“No!” The exclamation sends pain stabbing though his head again, and he winces, pressing his fingertips into his forehead. “Nope. Don’…don’ need t’ get Sh’ro. Need t’ fight.”
“Keithy, somehow I think fighting is the last thing you need to be doing right now.”
Like he has a choice. They’re kinda surrounded by Galra, what does Lance expect him to do, lie down and take a nap? Even though that does sound very, very nice…
“Stop it.” Keith scowls, pointing a finger at one Lance’s face, then the other. He isn’t sure which one is actually the real one. “Both…both o’ you. Stop…tellin’ me what t’ do.”
Both the Lances’ eyebrows shoot up toward their hairlines. He looks funny like that. Keith smiles, but slaps a hand over his mouth to hide it.
“Yeah. Alright. You’re not okay, and there’s no way I’m letting you keep -”
A sword swings over his head mid-sentence, his last second duck the only thing saving him from being decapitated. “Quiznak!” Stumbling backwards, he grabs Keith’s arm and drags him back, too. The abrupt movement sends both his head and stomach spinning, and he groans loudly.
“Geez, why’d you have to be so big?”
Keith squints up at the giant, towering Galra. “Why’d there have t’ be two?”
“Keith, for Pete’s sake there’s not…never mind, just…don’t die.”
He isn’t paying attention to Lance anymore. His focus is on the soldier - soldiers? - attacking them. Lance is a long-range fighter, a good one, but he’s out of his element right now. That means this fight is mainly up to Keith, headache and dizziness or not.
Each strike of his sword against the Galra’s weapon sends waves of pain through his body. He’s fading fast, and he knows it, vision wavering in and out so that he barely sees the hits coming for him before they connect. The headache is intensifying to the point where he feels like his skull might just explode right there.
Then suddenly, he’s on the ground, staring up at the ceiling, wondering how he got there. The Galra appears over him, grinning, ready to run him through, and Keith wants to move, he really really does, but his body just…lies there, frozen. His thoughts freeze, too. Everything seems to move in slow motion, the sword coming down toward him…then the Galra jerking backwards, stumbling, and falling out of sight.
Lance. He must have found higher ground, and taken the soldier out with his rifle. Reliable, just like always.
He almost died.
For some reason that’s hilarious to him right now. He almost died, again, for the millionth time. Keith is still on the floor in the corridor of a purple cat alien’s spaceship in the middle of outer space, but now instead of being frozen, he’s cracking up. A full-on belly laugh that hurts his head as bad as fighting had, but he can’t stop. Tears are rolling down his cheeks.
“See what I mean, Shiro? Either he’s dying or somebody did some kind of alien body-swap on him. Look at him, he’s laughing! In the middle of a battle! That’s…that’s not Keith.
Shiro’s face leans into his vision, a look on his face that’s a mixture of concern and amusement. “Hey, kiddo. What’s going on?”
Keith stops laughing long enough to stare at the white bangs that fall over Shiro’s forehead. “Y’re…turnin’ into an old man, tha’s what.” He snickers again.
“Right, right. I hear ya.” Shiro leans in closer, flipping on the blue lights of his armor, eyes darting back and forth across Keith’s face. “Yep, you definitely have a concussion. Your pupils are way off.”
“Yay,” Keith cheers quietly, sarcastically. “Love co’cussions. This makes…mmm…five? Six? I dunno, i’s hard to keep coun’ when everythin’s spinnin’ ‘round.”
“I’m sure it is. You’ve really gotta stop hitting your head so much, though.” Shiro slides his hand gently underneath Keith’s head, cradling it as he helps lift him to his feet and giving him time for the room to stop spinning before attempting to move him anymore.
“M’ head really hurts, Sh’ro,” he mumbles after a moment.
“I know it does, bud. I know. Let’s get you back to the Castle and get that fixed, okay?”
“‘Kay.”

“What is this?” Your eyes narrow in thought. Narrow at the footsteps that close in behind you. Widen when you turn, and a man is swinging his blade straight at your head.
Your body is quick to push back, into the control panel so it flickered and powered off, your hands pushing off in an attempt to roll to the side.
Your hand pulls your bay-yard from your belt, twisting in time for your weapon to collide with your opponents, both grunting at the impact.
The figure shoves forward so you fall onto your back, gasping as your bay-yard slides feet from your reach, pushing to sit up and reach for your weapon.
The quick swipe of the males blade causes you to hiss and clutch your shoulder, lifting your foot high enough to kick him backwards, into the control panel like he had done to you prior.
You reach out and lift your bay-yard, slinging your arm out so it hit your opponent in the jaw, knocking his mask off and over his shoulder.
You lift your head, jaw clenched and weapon drawn, eyes widening as your lips part in a gasp, when you meet the gaze of your opponent,
“Matt?” You squeak, dropping your bay-yard so it clattered on the metal floor and quickly retracted into its holder, free hand pressed hard to where your fingers slowly held blood,
“Y/N,” Matt breathes, his body pushing to stand up from where he fell to his knees, arms pulling you tightly into his chest so you hissed a second time, his hands holding your arms as he leans back, examining your injury,
“Shit, I’m so sorry,” He exhales, your head shaking as tears burned your eyes from behind your helmet,
“Oh my god,” You heave, bloodied hands pulling your helmet off so he could fully look at your face, “Oh, god, you’re alive,”
“I’m alive,” Matt nods, hands caressing your head so he could lean his forehead to knock against yours, your eyes pinching shut before you lean back, opening your eyes.
“Just wait until Pidge sees you, and-and Shiro,”
“Wait, they’re with you?” Matt knits his brows together, as you glance down at the blood through your amor. It’ll be fine.
“Well, on their own mission,” You exhale, “Any chance you’ve heard of Voltron?”
“Of course I’ve heard of Voltron,”
“Well,” You repeat, smiling shyly as you look up at him, “We’re all Paladins,”
“No way,” Matt shakes his head, “That’s so cool!” He reaches forward to twirl you around, pausing when noticing you flinch at the movement of your shoulder.
“Come on,” Matt pulls back, hand at your arm, “Let me fix your shoulder,”
“Actually,” You lift your helmet off the floor, placing it over your head, “I have somewhere we can go,”
“HEY, look, Y/Ns back!” Hunk and Lance turn at the white lions appearance, the team of five moving forward as the lions jaw opened, your figure stepping out with a hand on your shoulder,
“Whoa, what happened to you?” Pidge asks, eyes narrowed as she moves up to you, but you smile, her brows pinching as footsteps sound behind you, her gaze looking over your shoulder and widening at Matt’s figure,
“Matt!” Pidge gasps, your smile softening as you step to the side, Shiro crossing his arms as he moves up to you,
“How’d you find him?” Shiro asks, calmly, your eyes flicking up to him.
“That so called secret base?” Shiro nods, “It was Matt’s. He returned as soon as I went in. Started fighting before we realized each other,”
“You did a good job,” Shiro smiles, and you nod, looking over at Pidge and Matt pulling out of their embrace, “Does he know?”
Shit. No. He doesn’t. He hasn’t even met Keith yet. “No,” You murmur, sighing as you turn, “I don’t know how to tell him,”
“That might be something you talk about in your own time,” Shiro raises his eyes from your shoulder to your eyes, watching you nod and brush past him, missing Matt’s worried glance.
“FOCUS, Keith!”
“I am focusing! You’re the one not focusing!”
“Now you’re just fucking with me,”
Matt stops at the doorway of the training deck. By now he had gotten a feel of where each room was located on the ship, which lead him to sneak off and search for you.
He watches silently as you slung your bay-yard at the red paladin- Keith, Matt thinks- leading Keith to jerk back and knock his own weapon to the metal, pushing you away from getting a hit on him.
It’s a quick tuck and roll as you duck away from Keith’s swing, your foot hooking around his leg to knock him on his back, your teammate grunting loudly at the impact his body made.
Knees pinned at his sides, your hands pin his shoulders down, lips pulling upward in a snort as Keith rolls his eyes, head dropping against the floor in defeat,
“You win,” Keith huffs, hands at your thighs as you raise your eyebrows, eyes flicking between his.
“Nice,” You grin, dropping one eyebrow, “Rematch?”
Matt frowns as Keith lifts his head, lips nearly against yours, “Absolutely not,”
“So you admit I’m better than you,” You lean back, sitting up so you were sitting on his legs, “I’ll take it,”
Keith narrows his eyes, gaze then shifting to the side, so you turned and your smile dropped.
“Matt,” You call, when the dirty blonde turns and exits the deck. You send a short glance down at Keith, pushing to stand up, “Matt, wait,”
Huffing at his refusal to turn around, you fasten your pace, “Matthew Holt, look at me!”
“Oh, so now you care?” Matt turns, sharply, arms crossed as he watches your brows furrow and footsteps stop.
“Matt, I always cared,” You breathe, shaking your head, “You’d been gone for years. I had to do what was right for me and move on. I should have told you when you first came back, but I didn’t know how,”
“So you two?” Matt’s eyes flick to the door of the training deck, and you nod, gazing down.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you,” You say, lifting your gaze, “As the paladin of the white lion, my main focus has always been saving earth. Im not the girl you once knew, who only read books and was afraid to talk to anyone outside my little circle. I’m a paladin now. I save people,”
You glance to the side, silently moving back to the training deck where Matt frowns, jaw clenching in defeat. He had lost you, years ago.
“ARE you two okay?”
Lance and Hunk skid to a stop into the abandoned ships control room, both breathing heavily through their helmets, “We’re fine,” Lance heaves, “But we need to get out of here, now!”
“Why?” Pidge rushes, “What happened?”
“It was-,” Hunk pauses, shock still in his system, “Monster- blue flash- I had rotten food goo,”
“Wait,” Lance stops his teammate, eyes narrowed in thought, “Where’s Keith and Y/N?”
YOUR eyes scan the empty hall. Galra bots float, lifeless, Keith and Kosmo floating beside you, “Hello?” Keith calls, Kosmo growling in defense,
“What are you?” The robotic voice of the remaining Galra bot causes you to pause, eyes squinting. The bot repeats his question, Keith raising his flashlight to the bots face,
“My name is Keith,” Keith starts, head barely tilting towards you, “This is Y/N. We are Paladins of Voltron. Paladins of the Black and White lions,”
“Wait,” You speak, “Yordum Bering Exus. Is that you?”
“Where are the rest of the Galra?” The bot asks, your head turning to look at Keith,
“They’re still on Planet Ryker. Why?”
“Planet Ryker,” The robot repeats, before it pushes forward, your eyes widening at the large monster behind it.
“Keith,” You alert, reaching to grab his arm so he tugged you into him, sharply, avoiding the sudden purple blast ray that the monster- Sentry- send, his shield coming up to block the second shot, shoving you and him both into the metal wall beside you.
You grunt out in pain at the impact, Keith pushing you to the side so you rammed into Kosmo, who quickly teleported next to Keith, Keith grabbing your hip protectively as you vanish.
“Keith, Y/N and I were in communication before we got disconnected,” Pidge explains to Lance, hearing Matt in her earpiece ask in a panic,
“You lost contact with them?”
“Keith and Y/N can hold their own together,” Allura breathes, “We need to figure out what that thing is,”
You reappear in the control room, gasps wheezed in fear before you push away from Keith, eyes wide, “What the hell was that?”
“What?” Pidge rushes, “What did you guys see?”
“Some- monster!” You heave, hearing Matt’s voice glitch in your earpiece as it gained connection,
“Oh thank God,”
“The base you sent this fleet to plunder, was it Warlord ranveigs?” Keith rushes, flying up to Lahn.
“Yes. It was,” Lahn answers, shortly, Allura glancing at you in alert.
“Keith, what’s going on?”
“The creature on this ship is a superweapon designed to destroy the Galra, and only Galra,” Keith starts,
“Warlord Ranveig would never create such a thing,” Lahn hisses, Keith shaking his head.
“Ranveig found the creature in the Quantum Abyss and experimented on it with Lotors Quintessence,”
“How do you know so much on this, Keith?” You ask, floating up between Pidge and Allura.
“Krolia and I let it lose so we could escape Ranveigs base,” Keith sighs, eyes fluttering shut, “This is all my fault,”
You shake your head, ignoring the glare Lahn sends your teammate, “Pidge, can you set a protocol that could self destruct this place? We need to get rid of the ship, and that monster,”
“Once I set it we’ll only have two minutes to leave the ship,” Pidge rushes, fingers pressing buttons, before she turns, waving a gloved hand, “Go. Go!”
You turn, jaw clenching at Sentrys appearance at the side door, “All Galra must perish,”
You yelp as the monster lunges forward, darting to the side before flying up with your jet pack, rushing for the door. Your front slams into the now shut door, fist curling to punch the metal before you look over, realizing Keith, too, had been trapped.
“Guys!” You shout, eyes wide in terror as you face Sentry, pulling out your bay-yard as he flew forward, you and Keith dodging in different directions so Sentry slammed into the doors front.
You hiss as Sentrys tail wraps around your body, pinning your arms at your sides, your gasp cut short as his tail flicks, hard, sending you into the metal wall feet away.
Your vision swims black, growing blurry as your lungs gasp for air, the sudden pain in your ribs causing you unable to move. Keith looks over as Sentry roared, rushing to you, Keith’s body protectively shielding yours as his shield protects himself, shoving you both into the wall a second time.
“Stay awake, Y/N!” Keith demands, rushes, arm at your lower back keeping you from floating away from him. His bay-yard shifts into a large gun, blasting at the monster before he turns and aims, shooting a hole into the locked door.
“Go!” Keith demands to his team, jet pack activating as he rushes forward,
“What happened to Y/N?!” Lance rushes, looking back at the distant explosion, where his eyes widen at the fire rising.
With a heatwave, the team of seven are thrown into space, the black lion quick to catch you and Keith so Keith landed on his feet, looking out his front visor where the white lion floated in front of his own.
“Let’s get her to the castle,” Keith demands, looking down at where your hand pressed to your rib, blood at your lips, “Stay with me, okay?”
You whimper, head tilting back before it leans to the side, dropping onto his shoulder.
“WHAT happened?” Matt and Shiro move forward towards their friend, Keith moving past them with you in his arms,
“The thing we had to destroy, attacked us, twice,” Keith hisses, teeth bared as he bends down to stand you on your feet inside the healing pod, stepping back in time for it to zap shut,
“She only seemed to be in danger around you,” Matt seethes, Keith looking over his shoulder to glare at the dirty blonde,
“What was that?”
“Do I need to dumb it out for you?” Matt steps up, ignoring Shiros call, “You’re the reason she got hurt. You’re the reason she left me!”
“Y/N left you because you ran off into space,” Keith snarls, Shiro and Pidge both jumping between the two so Keith stepped back, jaw clenched.
“Now is not the time to be fighting,” Shiro orders, Pidge nodding then shaking her head as she points to your unconscious, healing figure,
“Y/N needs you both right now, as much as you might hate it. So shut up and be here for her when she wakes up,”
Matt’s eyes shift from Pidge to Keith, Keith firmly crossing his arms over his armored chest before facing the healing pod.
Matt watches as Keith’s eyes drift to his bloodied gloves, glare faltering before looking back up to you.
Pidge exhales a heavy breath and follows Shiro, reluctantly, out of the med-bay, Matt crossing his own arms and scanning his eyes across your face.
“I’m sorry I came out rude,” He starts, Keith barely side glancing him, “It just, sucks. Coming back from being in space prison to find out your girlfriend moved on,”
“Y/Ns a lot different now than she used to be,” Keith reminds, “When I first met her I was an asshole and she was quiet. We didn’t click right away. But I found a meaning to my team and she’s apart of my team. It just- happened,”
“She’s definitely different,” Matt chuckles, Keith raising an eyebrow, “When I ran into her, I didn’t know she could fight like that,”
“She didn’t learn from me, that’s for sure,” Keith smirks, which instantly falls as the heal pod beeps, opening so Keith’s arms shot out to catch your leaning figure,
“That was quick,” Matt mutters, Keith shooting him a glance before you lift your head, brows pinched in discomfort,
“What happened?” Your eyes shift from Matt to Keith, who’s muscles visibly relaxed to see you up and moving. Matt noticed.
“We’ll tell you about it later,” Matt steps up, smiling lightly, “I’ll let the others know you’re okay,” Matt’s eyes meet Keith’s, his nod short before he steps back and out the door.
Maybe, just maybe, Matt forgave him.

not to make a voltron post in 2022 but a tiktok series inspired me
lance is a stoner, he swam and surfed back home and has a skateboard to get around since he failed his drivers test sm and, since he already has the build for it, he’s a runner. with all the stress from iverson and the rest of the garrison (we literally saw him and hunk sneaking out in the first episode so u know they get up to shit so) he’s most definitely a stoner
like i said hunks a stoner too, i don’t think he did it before getting to the garrison but lance like was always smoking and hunk warmed up to it and tried it and doesn’t like smoking it so he’ll make edibles and he and lance will just be high as kites in their room
i feel like keith dabbled in it on earth but like shit kept happening so he didn’t really do it often so he could have a clear head to find answers (about shiro and aliens and whatnot). then they’re in space fighting an intergalactic war. but when they get back to earth? you KNOW that boy is lighting up. all that stress?? yeah he’s chillin in the clouds
matt most definitely smokes and after pidge found him and their dad, they smoke together. matt is worried about it at first but eventually chills and they just hang out together and smoke
do i even have to say anything for shiro? all he’s been through? it’d be a miracle if you found him sober. nah but seriously i feel like he smokes a little before kerberos for his arm, i don’t think he did while he was black paladin, but after the war? he always has something on him.
i don’t feel like allura was that into it, she’s all diplomatic and shit and wants to make a good impression and keep things civil and set an example. but like at one team sleepover, when majority of the team starts smoking, she joins and just sits there like “what the fuuuuuuuuck” so like she doesn’t do it often but after a long day or when certain rulers of certain planets are being pricks she just has to go to the bathroom and take a hit so she doesn’t start swinging
coran. tried it. but i feel like he’s too energetic to like weed. i think he may take like adderal,,, but weed is like an occasional thing for him. plus he has taken on the task of looking over all these CHILDREN so he doesn’t really do it much.
but no yeah i feel like keith came into lances room after everything and saw hunk and lance sitting together high as balls in a smokey room that reeks of weed and just locks the door and joins them. matt and hunk run into each other in the kitchen late at night and this understanding passes between them and now pidge and matt are joining hunk and co. shiro doesn’t really like to join the rest of them to get high but he does sometimes to make sure they’re okay or to like bond or whatever (he knows they smoke bc keith tells him a lot of stuff. it’s how they bond. and shiro just has this POWER to get info out of the paladins or anyone for that matter without even trying)
