Arrival to Keflavík · Lost luggage · Birth of the Meradalir volcano · Night in Akranes
4th of August, 2022
After a long flight with two transfers - a busy night spent on Stockholm airport, early breakfast for two (= shared Norwegian beer) and enjoying the sight of a beautiful landscape after departing from airport in Oslo, we finally arrived to Keflavík - only to find out, that one of our backpacks was left back in Stockholm. Knowing, that we have time until the evening for the luggage to arrive, we decided to pick up our rented car and explore the surroundings. As we didn't have an exact plan for our first day in Iceland, our best option was to stay in a close proximity to Keflavík airport. And how damn lucky we were! Only one day has passed since the birth of the Meradalir volcano, and the starting point for the hike was only 30 minutes away from the airport.
Spectacular view of the solidified lava fields from previous eruptions in Geldingadalir, photo taken at the starting point of Route A to Meradalir volcano.
The hike to the volcano itself took us approximately 2 hours of leisurely walking. Vast area of the Fagradsfjall volcanic system was constantly monitored closely by scientists. We watched the volcano from a safe distance from above, nevertheless it was an experience of a lifetime. Later we noticed quite a lot of people in considerable proximity to the volcano and we considered returning back and going closer to the fissure at the end of our trip. Unfortunately, we were unable to do so due to time constraints.
Meradalir eruption, second day (4th of August, 2022).
After this unforgettable hike, it was almost time to get our lost luggage. On our way to Keflavík airport, we made short stops on the south coast of Reykjanes peninsula to observe a few swimming seals and we also took a peek at the Gunnuhver hot springs. First Icelandic word of the day was „hætta“ - danger. One has to be careful around all that lava, geothermal hot springs and pools. But the views are definitely worth it :)
We decided to spend our first night in a camp in the town of Akranes. We managed to watch the eye-flattering sunset, although the sun barely sets and the night is never completely dark in August. If you have to watch your budget, the best option is to buy a camping card at a very favorable price, which gives you access to several camping sites all over Iceland.
First night at the Akranes camping site, which was one of our favourites, as it offers great facilities and amazing seaview.

User 1: actually speechless
User 2: it all makes sense now
User 3: kind of disgusting if you ask me- he knows her brother since they were really young and probably met y/n when she was a teenager 🤮🤮 typical grooming behavior
User 4: @/user3 please she’s not a child! and also you’re acting like she doesn’t have Sebastian to look out for her…

User 7: @/user6 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
User 8: lewis did say he wants children one day- makes sense he’d go for a younger woman. now he can have his career in peace and try for an eighth world champion title and by the time he’s done y/n’s still young enough to give him kids
User 9: i hope they’re ok though :((

Can you talk about Icelands role in the cold war here? I would love to hear your full thoughts
I absolutely can (。•̀ᴗ-)✧
For a large part of the Cold War, iceland was very important simply because there was a very back and forth on trying to get influence over iceland.
Iceland was a "difficult" and "rebellious" ally according to the US and NATO because iceland refused to align itself against the soviet union, and the soviet union was trying to strengthen the far left movement that was very strong on Iceland.
Iceland also played a part in the de-escalation at the end of the cold war, the Reykjavík summit being held in.. well, Reykjavík
On iceland there were also very mixed feelings among people, the far left movements had connections to Russia, east germany and even Cuba, getting funding from every one of these countries. And the right wing side of iceland was trying to get closer ties to the US.
(Seen especially since it was the independent party(conservative) that were against the Americans leaving their permanent spot in Keflavík in 2006)
Icelands conflicts with Britain made this even stronger, on multiple accounts being close to leaving NATO due to this. Which was seen as extremely positive by the far left movements on iceland and by their connections in Moscow.
In connection to hetalia I have interpreted it to be like this:
-Iceland receives funding secretly from Russia and has secret meetings with him in regards to his leftist movement
- Iceland is very back and forth on being friendly and almost hostile with the US
- iceland has extremely conflicting feelings about being apart of NATO, but is negative to joining the EU
- and that iceland is a leftist, because of how strong the leftist movement is, so he is closer aligned to Russia politically than he was with the US at this time, but had no choice due to his bosses being US friendly
- Iceland also being an important factor for both Russia and the US

Wow... The amount of traction my volcano post is getting is a little bit more than my average experience...
Seriously tho, thanks folks, for getting the word out. The situation is much more serious than a lot of people are aware.. but also weirdly less serious than some people think.
International news either seem to not be covering this at all, OR!... they've got headlines suggesting we've evacuated all of Iceland... which is not the case, at all.
Keflavík Airport is Not at direct risk, but should the magma break surface in or very near the ocean... there may be a prohibitive amount of ash and steam flung into the air, essentially stopping all air traffic through the area for duration.
This is a possibility, but not the most likely scenario at the moment.
Either way, if you've got any transatlantic flights coming up for the rest of 2023, you may want to keep an eye on the situation. That means any flights between pretty much anywhere in Europe and anywhere in North America (both USA & Canada), or any flight to Iceland from either side.
As of writing this the volcano has not erupted, but this may change any second now. Could be two minutes after I write this post but who knows, it might be going by the time you see this.
Heartbreakingly, groups of volunteers that are asking to enter the Grindavík area to attempt to retrieve people's pets have not yet been given permission to do so. There are cats, dogs, parrots, as well as livestock (horses, sheep and chickens) still in the area. Getting them out means putting human lives in danger, so the lack of permission makes a terrible kind of sense, but people are still pleading to be allowed to try and save as many as they can.
That's it, that's all the update I got for you today. If you want to help, want to donate, may I suggest you donate to support Palestinian victims of man-made horrors instead for now. All of the people here have food and shelter at a safe distance from the natural disaster brewing, so...

President Gudni Th. Johannesson said in a televised address late Sunday that “a daunting period of upheaval has begun on the Reykjanes peninsula,” where a long-dormant volcanic system has awakened.
A volcano on the peninsula erupted for the second time in less than a month on Sunday morning. Authorities had ordered residents to leave the fishing town of Grindavik hours earlier as a swarm of small earthquakes indicated an imminent eruption.
Geophysicist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson said Monday morning that the eruption had “decreased considerably” overnight, but that it was impossible to say when it would end.
Grindavik, a town of 3,800 people about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, was previously evacuated in November when the Svartsengi volcanic system awakened after almost 800 years.
The volcano eventually erupted on Dec. 18, sending lava flowing away from Grindavik. Residents were allowed to return to their homes on Dec. 22.
Since then, emergency workers have been building defensive walls that have stopped much of the lava flow from the new eruption short of the town.
No one has been killed in the eruptions, but a workman is missing after reportedly falling into a crack opened by the volcano.
“We don’t yet know how this eruption will unfold, but we must still take those actions that are within our power,” the president said.
“We continue to hope for as good an outcome as possible, in the face of these tremendous forces of nature,” he added. "We will carry on with our responsibilities and we will continue to stand together.”
Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, averages one eruption every four to five years. The most disruptive in recent times was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed clouds of ash into the atmosphere and disrupted trans-Atlantic air travel for months.
The latest eruption isn’t expected to release large amounts of ash into the air. Operations at Keflavík Airport are continuing as normal, said Gudjon Helgason, spokesman for airport operator Isavia.
