What a pure delight this book is. This is Keeper Tips (2021): “Collected Wisdom on Running Games,” published in celebration of Call of Cthulhu’s 40th anniversary. The idea here is for a group of esteemed keepers and game designers to offer short snippets of advice. Those snippets were then organized into thematic groupings — Horror, Inclusivity, Monsters, Props and so on.

There is no attempt at uniformity. All the contributors run (and write) very different sorts of games, so their advice runs the gamut, sometimes one paragraph of advice being contradicted by the next. Better: all of it is uncredited in-line. They become, in aggregate, like Buddhist koans to ponder, puzzle over, embrace or discard.

Because that’s the thing, right: it’s all valid! Every group at every table has different needs and wants, so there isn’t a “correct” way to play or run any game, just the best way in the needs of the moment. That’s perhaps the wisest lesson of Keeper Tips.

How do you draw the metal shine on your animatronics?

Oh geez

Honestly?

I have no frigging idea! Couldn't start to explain what I'm doing, as I just draw and add shine and shading as I work. At least if yer talking about my robot shine in my sketches.

But alright, let's see if I can try and make examples for this..

As said above, I usually shade and shine as I go, so leaving this one mostly blank was bit of a toll on me.

But yeh, just a flat sketch of our favourite Sun guy just happy to be here

Alright, this is a very simple example for how I do most shine on areas meant to be a light colour. Can't be too drastic and risk making it look like the casing is supposed to be darker.

Best way I can explain the "shine lines", hmmm.. I'm not smart enough to have the words, I guess. I just learn from observing art and things around me to try get an idea what gives the right effect with the tools given..

Let's try with more detailing by adding soft shading.

I really do just add these things based on feel and vibe, as I go.

Do pay attention that whether it's metal shine or shading on non-metal parts, it rarely goes all the way to the art lines. Gotta preserve white space for effect, it helps giving the needed illusion of light when ye only got pencil to work with. Is the best way I can put any instructions on this.

Of course matters on the shape and desired effect on what you are drawing. There are many ways to draw shading and shine on different materials, for the right feel. This is just some basic and simple examples I can think of to try and illustrate.

I'm sure you can find plenty of better tutorials out there to explain this concept in deeper detail than I'm able to.

I never really looked it up myself, I just experimented with my techniques as I went. Even trying to set it up in separate parts have me unsure if this gonna help ya understand how I do my work.

Best I can tell ya, is I mostly tribute the backgrounds of Hollow Knight some credit for my shading techniques today. Some arts done attempting to copy the style of the game's backgrounds and detailing gave me some pointers to work from.

So, yeah, that's the best I can give ya on the subject of how I do metal shine in pencil. Best I can offer is ya look up examples that work for you, to try draw from as you figure out your own technique and vibes for it.

i had a lot to play with here, from different flag patterns to the perspective pose to the coloring style. also: it’s a bit hard to tell w/ the pose, but linh is wearing the masculine style of áo dài (formal vietnamese wear) while retaining her more femme long hair!

doing all of systober today because I will forget if I try to do it daily and also we're 9 days in anyway so.

PRINCIPAL HOST - our hosts are mike and van, van has been hosting for 2 or 3 years now and mike has been for 1. they're also gay (together). mike is a fnaf fictive and is like 16?? and van is mostly brainmade (and a little bit factive) and is like 15?

PRINCIPAL PROTECTOR - our primary protector is michael, he's also a fnaf introject but this time is dead michael afton instead of the alive one. he's an adult of unknown age

PRINCIPAL PERSECUTOR - we only really have two alters we'd label as persecutors, and they're barty and tempest. barty is a harry potter introject and is like 17 or something? he won't give me a straight answer. and tempest is brainmade and unknown age. barty is mostly a protector and caretaker now (yay coping mechanisms) and tempest is still a persecutor but is nicer to us

PRINCIPAL GATEKEEPER - we only have like two known gatekeepers ?? one is aptly named keeper and is literally a cat. for some reason. and the other one is eval (evaluation) and I have no idea what they are. or what they do. hm.

A RANDOM HOLDER - uhh. hayden I guess is a trauma and anger holder that we discovered more recently. he's like 7 and a factive of someone we were very close to at that age who we didn't have a healthy relationship with.

PROBLEMATIC ALTER - skip

OLDER ONE - probably rai? they're a partial pokemon (raichu) fictive and split from when we went to spain at like 8 years old

RECENT ONE - I suppose an alter we found recently would be a guy that I'll call 'override' because using his name can trigger it out. it's pretty much a robot and thinks he's programmed. it will not be posting here

FIRST INTROJECT - I think the first we found was probably power/arson?? she's dormant now but she's a chainsaw man fictive and used to take care of one of our littles.

Good morning everyone~

I was asked a bit ago how bad the ponds get for the ducks, well it can get pretty bad during the summer.

This is About 3-4 days after the last pond change. This was full after being cleaned. It's emptied both due to quacker splashers, and some to evaporation. We're up to 100+ degrees Fahrenheit again regularly.

Dumped out and rinsed a lil. I use a scrub brush on a drill to scrub the ponds. Otherwise I'd be at it all day 😬.

The blue one, I forgot to take a pic of before, this one oddly was a lot cleaner. I would've thought it to be opposite as this one is a smaller pond.

Scrubbed up and being refilled :)

I didn't take after pics, partly cause I was out later than I expected for husbandry chores, partly I forgot to lol.

Also I had a lil visitor! :) I think I need to plant some more and provide another refuel station as ive begun noticing more of these lil ones popping round.

If it's a world where everybody has a magical aura of a color that is beyond their control, I don't really think it can in any way be considered progressive to call people's aura colors ugly and judge them by it.

pro tip everyone: if you are interested in the summaries of a brand new author in this day and age......please do yourself a favor. Look up interviews with them first. Check to see if they literally brag about reading nothing but fanfiction before writing their book.

I am suffering. I hope to save you the same level of suffering. If you need any proof that reading and writing nothing but fanfiction will only produce absolute garbage original fiction, please borrow "The Witch King" he H E Edgemon from your local library and suffer right along with me. I was so excited to read it.

This also once again goes to prove that all the people claiming that fanfiction by Queer people is inherently more progressive than original fiction written by non-Queers is just a giant pack of misogynistic, racist, abuse apologistic lies.

And if you can get through The Witch King. Go ahead and try reading the sequel, The Fae Keeper. It's one of the first fiction books I've ever had to stop reading before I finished it in years. Oh my gods.

I'd be nicer about it if the second book didn't have explicit, on page racist misogynistic victim blaming that we're meant to agree with.
