rereading tolkien, i am struck by frodo's apparent understanding of his task.

it is his doom.

he doesn't have hope.

hear me out; he doesn't say oh it's hopeless why bother and shrug off the responsibility, which is the reaction of many people in difficult times or with impossible tasks. he doesn't fall into cynicism and its inevitable apathy and inaction. he doesn't let despair eat him from within, or allow fear to freeze him and any personal growth.

no. frodo just looks at the odds of some random-ass hobbit from the shire defeating the current manifestation of a deathless dark lord with untold power and countless legions of cruel, nightmarish servants.

frodo, who had never been as far as bree in all his fifty years, is to travel through all the dangers of middle earth, then waltz right under the strikeout nose strikeout all-seeing eye of sauron and practically into the lap of the enemy.

frodo, who has never been tested, who has never achieved any personal greatness- plump, comfortable, laid-back frodo- is not only to resist an evil so great that it warps the will of wizards and the minds of men, but he is also to unmake it, to remove it from existence, an act which involves the casually overlooked detail of entering an active volcano.

frodo takes all of this in, and, like any sane person, he thinks: this is hopeless.

and then: better get started.

that is what makes frodo so relatable to me. he doesn't have hope, but he does what he can anyway.

you don't have to have hope to carry on.

Sometimes, when I know I have a really stressful week coming up, or I’ve had back-to-back days that has left me disorganized and unable to comfortably function in my space, I use this trick to help me not be so hard on myself

I let “past me” take care of “future me”

It sounds so simple and cheesy, but it completely changed my mindset on how important my comfort was to my success in many forms. I stopped “blaming” myself for not having it together and started thanking “past me” for doing something to help my mental load or even to make the next day just a little bit easier

I am becoming the comfort and support I needed and I am a better person for it.

Don't give up. You might be trying to get better grades but you still fail ? I know how that shit hurts. I know how tiring it is, but never give up.

Because of mental health reasons I have many struggles with school and exams, but I improve slowly. It takes a lot of time to get used to a productive and effective routine but it's definitely worth it.

I once overexerted one of my pokemon to death.

It was over a decade ago by this point. I was facing a lot of pressure both at home and on a regional scale and just completely lost sight of the well-being of my team. I saw them as tools to reach a goal instead of what they were—family. I'd like to think I've grown from that point. In fact, I've become a completely different person. But watching a member of my team just suddenly keel over and stop breathing, knowing it was ME who did that. It haunts me. I've been trying to forgive myself, and I think I'm making progress, but some nights the guilt just overwhelms me.

I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to reconcile with myself. I just know I have to keep trying.
