These are original color lantern slides taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1921. They show three views of the garden of the house belonging to George Hoadly and Katherine Hinkle Ingalls at 154 East 78th St. (between Lexington and Third Avenues). It's hard to imagine such a bucolic place at that location, but 1921 was another world.
Johnston entered these and other slides in the 1922 City Gardens Club of New York photo exhibition at the New York Camera Club.

Long time listener first time caller (well not really I'm pretty sure we've talked about Succession before). I wanna read up more on anti psychiatry but I'm fucking shithouse at reading, are there any like videos or podcasts or audiobooks you'd recommend, because that would make my life ten times easier
yes great question honestly. i haven't heard all of these podcast episodes, but i curated the list based on knowing the speakers' work (not necessarily the podcast hosts/shows!), and i think these are good places to start.
"Debunking the Myth of the Chemical Imbalance with Dr. Joanna Moncrieff" interviewed by Dr. Caroline Leaf
Revolution Health Radio: "Reviewing the Evidence on the Serotonin Theory of Depression, with Dr. Joanna Moncrieff"
Mad in America Radio: Lucy Johnstone on the Power Threat Meaning Framework
NPR Fresh Air: Anne Harrington on psychiatry's "troubled search" for a biological understanding of mental illness
New Books Network: Mical Raz on her book "What's Wrong With the Poor: Psychiatry, Race, and the War on Poverty"
The Mental Breakdown Morning Show: "Bruce Cohen and Psychiatric Hegemony" (Cohen, unlike most on this list, explicitly aims for a marxist explanation and understanding of mental illness)
Madness Radio: "Bipolar Medication Myths" (Joanna Moncrieff interviewed by Will Hall)
What Your GP Doesn't Tell You: "David Healy Discusses SSRI Drugs, Suicide and Sexual Dysfunction"
Coming From Left Field: "The Political Economy of Mental Health Systems with Joanna Moncrieff"
States of Mind: "Mental Illness in America" (includes segments with Katherine Bankole-Medina, Jonathan Metzl, Allan Horwitz, Jamie Cohen-Cole, and Elyn Saks)
Jesse Meadows's podcast on ADHD, "Sluggish" (haven't listened to this one, but have read a lot of their writing; they're challenging the psychiatric view of ADHD as a person who struggles with the symptoms and behaviours the diagnostic label describes)
audio books: i'm honestly not sure where's the best and cheapest place to actually download these from, but i know there are audio books of 'mind fixers' by anne harrington (narrated by joyce bean) and 'desperate remedies' by andrew scull (narrated by jonathan keeble). uh, if anyone has a good list of audiobooks on this lmk :-)

Here's a damn fine solid amount of all the different kinds of media that I think both can definitely fit well in and could legit share the same universe as what is in my opinion one of the best trilogies ever made, Gore Verbinski's Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy, which you can both read and see below for yourself right about here:
• Jon Turteltaub's National Treasure Duology
• Stephen Sommers' The Mummy (1999)
• John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China
• Joe Johnston's The Rocketeer
• Soman Chainani's The School For Good and Evil (Book Series)
• Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart's Wolfwalkers
• Chris Sanders & Dean DeBois' How To Train Your Dragon Series (1 - 3 & TV Series)
• Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones Series (1 - 4) & The Adventures Of Tintin (2011)
• Julius Avery's Overlord (2018)
• Andrew Adamson's The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe & The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian
• Andrew Stanton's John Carter (2012)
• Warner Bros.' Wizarding World Series (Harry Potter 1 - 8 & Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them)
• Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak
• Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake & Control

2023 favorites
tagged by @godzilla-en-mexico
Albums
This list is a lot shorter if I confine myself to just stuff from 2023. Some albums what are new this year what I liked are:
Algiers - Shook Protomartyr - Formal Growth in the Desert Wednesday - Rat Saw God Boygenius - The Record Mandy Indiana - i’ve seen a way Death & Vanilla - Flicker New Pornographers - Continue as a Guest White Poppy - Sound of Blue Home Front - Games of Power Bruise Control - Useless for Something
Also special mentions for Jeanines - Don't Wait For a Sign, Lande Hekt - House Without a View, Ex-Void - Bigger Than Before, Ribbon Stage - Hit With the Most, The Beths - Expert in a Dying Field and Clear Channel - Hell, which are all really fun albums from 2022 except the Clear Channel one which is from 2020, and all of which I only heard this year. They would've been among my best of 2022 if I knew about them at the time.
Books
I think I actually read four books that are new for 2023 this year, Anything That Moves by Jamie Stewart, Our Trade Unions by Nigel Flanagan, Dance Your Way Home by Emma Warren, and Vehicle by Jen Calleja. As for what my actual favourite books of the year were, probably Vehicle, What We Don't Talk About by JoAnn Wypijewski, The Baudelaire Fractal by Lisa Robertson, Umastered by Katherine Angel, Devil House by John Darnielle, Disnaeland by DD Johnston. Oh, and I have like extremely mixed feelings for complicated reasons about Pearls From Their Mouth by Pear Nuallak, but mostly positive about that one. Sag Harbor by Colson Whitehead and Life is Elsewhere by Milan Kundera were really good as well.
Film
Killers of the Flower Moon is my favourite new film of 2023 cos I think it's the only new film I've watched this year. Other than that, think I watched Bodies Bodies Bodies, River's Edge, Halloween, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Do the Right Thing, Death of Stalin, Videodrome and But I'm a Cheerleader for the first time this year, all those films have their merits.
Tagging uh @thewomanwithmissingfingers @orpheusdrinkinga40inadeathbasket @ultroid2068 @svankmajerbaby @poetickrogan @ashtrayfloors and indeed anyone else who wants to play

Queen Katherine I presented Bethany Anne Johnston with her Officer of the Windenburg Empire (OWE) medal during an Investiture ceremony at Buckingsim Palace today to recognize her glittering acting career.
The investiture marked the first since Her Majesty was crowned two weeks ago, and the amount of press allowed in the throne room revealed just how popular Windenburg's new Queen is.
The actress, Bethany Anne Johnston, who famously played Cassidy Hall in Olivia-winning film The Meadow's Breeze, received the award during today's investiture ceremony but declined to speak to the waiting press after receiving the honor.
She was dressed in a striking purple gown with high collar and sleeves.
The Queen, who has had a busy schedule of events since coronation, wore The Roz dress by one of her favorite designers, @theroyalsims, and appeared happy while greeting her investiture guests. For footwear, the Queen chose her favorite black heels.
Queen Katherine’s jewelery accessories usually remain the same for these sorts of audiences. She chose her stud pearl earrings paired with a two-strand pearl necklace.
Bethany, who has twice been Olivia-nominated, including for her The Meadow's Breeze supporting actress role, made her name with a string of appearances in Merchant Silk films, before appearances in Simmywood blockbusters including Fight Clubs, Planet Of The Werewolves and the Henry Skillet films.

I was wondering if you knew any books preferable YA with a poly relationship that sci fi or fantasy I like iron widow and into the ravenous dark Many thank yous
Try Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton, That Inevitable Victorian Thing by EK Johnston, and the Adaptation duology by Malinda Lo. This Rebel Heart by Katherine Locke is more like light historical fabulism, but I'd try that too. And while it's not YA, I think a lot of YA readers also tend to like Chameleon Moon by RoAnna Sylver.

PRESENTING: THE GREAT TUMBLR GIRLBOSS TOURNEY!!!!!!
We have 128 phenomenal contestants, and several shitty ones that were abandoned on the spreadsheet. Some were rejected for good reasons: Freddie Mercury isn’t a girl, Princess Di died too recently, and Trish is from one lady’s single Tiktok. Some were rejected for petty and foolish reasons, such as “I don’t like Hetalia” and “I don’t like early 2000s movies.”
Under the cut is all the match-ups in plain text for those of you who with to ctrl+F for their girlboss. If your own girlboss didn’t make it in, feel free to send in asks about how I’m a fool for running this poll without including your rejected babygirl.
Additionally, feel free to peruse the original spreadsheet to see everyone who didn’t make it in. It is organized in no way shape or form besides the occasional collating of characters who had multiple submissions (notably, Vriska).
If there’s anything I should know about any of the accepted girlbosses (”The person who played this girlboss is currently being prosecuted for murder in North Carolina” or other similar aspects of despicability that should get them disqualified) please inform me off-anon, with evidence. While some of these girlbosses are literal murderers, those who have shed human blood are either fictional or have been dead for over a century, but I don’t want any current murderers around. I want everyone on tumblr to be able to enjoy this tournament if possible.
Polls should begin some time this weekend, assuming no problems arise.
