This excerpt is from yesterday's work on my NaNoWriMo WIP, "Ladies Don't Write Music" (Violins and Violets series, Book 1).

Katharina has gone for a sneaky walk in the park with Johann, and the topic has... strayed a little from their usual music chat.

A flock of birds flew out across the path, making us both jump.

“Oh, pigeons,” Johann mumbled to himself, “I think they follow me wherever I go. When I left work today, to come to see you, there was a pigeon waiting for me on the front steps of the court.”

I regarded him suspiciously out of the corner of my eye. “They follow you?” I said.

He nodded. “I don’t know why. Maybe my sister has cast some kind of spell upon me.”

I laughed. “Louisa, cast spells? She thinks much too highly of you.”

He scratched the back of his neck. “I think she may send them as a present.” He grinned. “She thinks very highly of you, too, you know.”

Johann takes a lot of inspiration from a dear old friend of mine who became known as the Pigeon Lord after pigeons massed at his bedroom window one morning. As far as I know, he has been able to command them ever since, and I always say "hello" to him when I see a pigeon out and about.

katharina my most beloved. where to begin. you're simply an amazing friend. you're so so supportive, so empathetic, and so good at keeping regularly in touch even though we live an annoying number of time zones away from each other. i'm pretty sure if we really had no other obligations our phone calls would be about 5 hours long because there's really never any shortage of things to talk about. i also think you're one of the most kindhearted people i've ever met. you never fail to see the good in people & things & situations and i know i've said this before but i love love love hearing how you think about the world because it always helps me step back and remember the good in all of it even when i'm completely losing it. you're also just remarkably resilient and i admire how you deal with challenges so so much. you're one of the strongest people i've ever met and i'm sooo lucky to be your friend. i never thought i'd actually meet someone who i consider one of my closest friends on this website but i did and <3 ilysm i honestly could write another three pages but i'll stop here

The below is some of what I wrote last night, to finish off NaNoWriMo 2023. I'm now on Chapter 19/25 and hoping to finish, "Ladies Don't Write Music," this week (before I go to sleep on Friday 7th December).

In this scene, Käthe's parents have just found out that she would rather not get married. They're angry with her - her father has even stormed out of the room - but her mother just can't understand why Käthe would thow away all the opportunities they're trying to give her to be happy. Unfortunately, the only way they can imagine her being happy is with a husband and children, and she's just stated to work out that she's not interested in men so much as women. Also unfortunately for her, it's 1784, and she'll struggle to get by in the world without a husband.

Mama looked at me sadly. "Is that true, Käthelein? You really don't want a husband?"

I shook my head. "I don't think I do, no."

“Oh, Käthe, but every young woman wants a husband."

"Not me," I said quietly, "It's just not something I want. Why can't my music be enough?I know you say music can’t be a companion, the way another person can, but…. I think for me, it could. And I want the chance to try without people asking me all the time, when I’m going to find a husband, when I’m going to have children.”

She sighed. “You can’t be single forever,” she said, “That’s not the future we want for you.”

“But it is the future Käthe wants for herself,” the priest said, “And if it has no husband or children in it, better that she know that now. It is very easy to resent your marriage and family if you come to realise, when you’re older, that you never really wanted any of them.”

He bowed his head as though he were remembering something sad. Perhaps he had come from an unhappy home. It would certainly explain why he had chosen, himself, not to marry or have children.

Now I'm going to do some work on finishing the novel! I have to try to write as close to 1,750 words tonight as I can if I want to stay on track for 10k this week.

in this list, there's any type of names (mostly for english-speaking people though): typical first names, noun names, mythology names, etc.

SE Staffel 2 Rewatch (Folgen 77-79)

Und wie das letzte Schuljahr mit einem Versagen von Wölfchen geendet hat, so beginnt auch das neue wieder mit einem solchen 😛 Es gibt eine Begrüßungsfeier, zu der die Lehrer*innen sich sogar lustige Papierhüte aufgesetzt haben, aber Wölfchen hat in die Briefe an die Eltern ein falsches Datum geschrieben, sodass die Schüler*innen erst einen Tag sp��ter anreisen. Upsi. Ganz schön zerstreut, der Gute^^ (Und wer isst jetzt das ganze Eis??? Hätten sie halt mal mal spontan die Dorfkids eingeladen, dann hätten die auch keine Zeit sich böse Veräppelungspläne auszudenken 😅)

Die SE Musik und die ankommenden Schüler*innen - da geht mir ein bisschen das Herz auf 😊 Franz erklärt Sebastian irgendwas über Autos, was den aber gar nicht interessiert (same, Sebastian^^). Antje und Kim freuen sich, dass sie noch in einer Klasse sind (weil beide sitzen geblieben sind). Nadine und Iris begrüßen sich sehr erwachsen mit Küsschen links und rechts (und Iris erste Worte sind, dass sie drei Pfund angenommen hat, och menno, als ob das die wichtigste Info sein muss 😭). Budhi wartet auf Katharina (die nicht kommen wird!). Oliver fährt fast Elisabeth über den Haufen - aber wir sehen nicht, wie er Nadine begrüßt? Enttäuschend 🙁 Und obwohl Wolf extra erwähnt hat, dass Atze ja jetzt einen besonderen Draht ins Internat hat - "liebestechnisch" (ich liebe wie awkward Wolf ist, wenn es um Beziehungen geht. Baby 😊) - sehen wir erstmal nix von Alexandra und Atze. Wie ist der Stand? Sind die jetzt zusammen? Ich brauch Updates!!!

Oha, ich hab rausgefunden, dass Vera garkein #true dorfkid(TM) ist, sondern in Potsdam wohnt. Krass. Also keine Ahnung, wo Seelitz liegen soll, aber ich find es erstaunlich, dass es in Potsdam offenbar keine bessere Schule gibt, sodass Vera jeden Tag in die Pampa gondeln muss...

Warte mal, Budhi und Katharina hatten beide in den Ferien was mit anderen Leuten? Was sind denn das für treulose Tomaten?! Außerdem sind die 13/14 - wie krass sind die denn drauf, direkt was mit mehreren anzufangen? Ich war in dem Alter schon mit mir alleine überfordert, wie managen die bitte eine Beziehung UND eine Sommeraffäre? Außerdem bin ich immer wieder irritiert, dass die beiden in meiner Erinnerung das Seelitz-OTP waren und ich jetzt feststellen muss, dass ihre Beziehung garnicht mal sooo cool war. Kindheit ZERSTÖRT!^^

Zu Beginn des Schuljahres herrscht im Internat Bombenstimmung kadumm dsch. Aber krass, wie sie nicht nur eine Schatzsuche (ja, aufgemerkt, aktuelles SE-Team, eine GANZE Schatzsuche) sondern auch noch den Fund und die Entschärfung einer Bombe innerhalb von zwei Folgen abgefrühstückt haben. Sehr effektiv^^

Bin bisschen stolz auf die Dorfkids wegen der Sache mit der Schatzkarte. Sie wollen damit zwar nur die Einsteiner verarschen, aber das ist mit so viel Liebe zum Detail gemacht, ich bin begeistert. Bisschen so wie schon bei der Aliengeschichten in Staffel 1. Sie sind so putzig I can't 😍 Alexandra hat natürlich durchschaut, dass sie verarscht werden, aber Elisabeth zuliebe macht sie trotzdem bei der Suche mit. Ich mag Alexandra 😊 Und dann die Rache-Nummer der Einsteiner mit dem Schaf-Kanarienvogel! Ich hätte ja nix dagegen, wenn die ganze Serie nur daraus bestehen würde, dass die beiden Gruppen versuchen, sich gegenseitig reinzulegen. Das ist so witzig 😂 (Und ich find es btw tausendmal besser als die Idee, die sich über die Jahre entwickelt hat, dass es immer Schüler*innen geben muss, die Pranks machen. Ich hasse alle Prank-Stories sehr. Diese Rivalität zwischen Einsteinern und Dorfkids hat für mich so viel mehr Charme.)

Sie haben diese Staffel auch Kunstunterricht und ich weiß schon nach der ersten Kunststunde wieder, warum das in der Schule nicht mein Lieblingsfach war. Das Motto ist "Bilder Töne Geschichten Träume". Was ist das denn für ein Thema? Da kann man doch aus jedem Begriff zehn Stunden machen^^ Und dann endet das ganze darin, dass sie ein Bild von einem ihrer Träume malen sollen - oder wenn sie sich an keinen Traum erinnern, einfach irgendwas. Hä? Was ist denn das für eine Vorgabe? Kein Wunder, dass ich in Kunst nie den Durchblick hatte, ich bin schon beim Anschauen komplett überfordert. Ich brauche eine konkrete Aufgabenstellung, bitte! 😅
