One thing that struck hard in Kare Kano was the theme of perfection and how the act of labeling someone as 'perfect' is an act of rejection and refusal—the refusal to see and comprehend that person as an actual human being—because, after all, no human being is perfect. To label someone as perfect is to refuse to see their flaws, pain, and struggles, their human existence.

Likewise, when Souichirou and Yukino work hard to be seen as perfect by the people at school, they are in a way rejecting them as well as their own selves. They are refusing to be understood and comprehended as real human beings, and, especially in Souichirou's case, refusing to accept their own human flaws and pain.

That's why their character journeys throughout the story are all about them accepting their true selves and letting other people truly see them; to stop insisting on being perfect by the standards of Japanese society; and to pursue what they believe will truly make them happy, even if it’s not socially respectable. The societal aspect of it all is emphasized with their family backgrounds, with the Arima Family, an upper-class, prestigious family that is nonetheless miserable with its cycles of abuse hidden and perpetuated by 'perfection', being contrasted with the Miyazawa Family, a lower-middle class family headed by two parents who had their children as teens, who are nonetheless very happy.

It matters that in the end, Souichirou and Yukino's family is an unconventional yet happy one. It matters that Yukino gives birth as a teenager, but still achieves her dream of being a successful doctor, and that Souichirou gives up his family heritage of being a doctor and pursues his interest in being a police detective. And it's not just them—other characters pursue their own sometimes unconventional paths and the Kare Kano universe rewards them for it.
