Chapter 13

That night at Joe’s bar wasn’t anything too special, but it felt like the perfect night. It wasn’t too crowded but there were just enough people to make it seem like you didn’t stick out like a sore thumb. Music was playing in the background, but Amory didn’t pay attention to it as she was gazing at her boyfriend, still needing to get used to that. The two of them were sitting at a table along with Meredith. Miranda was eating some peanuts at the bar, totally ignoring that the interns were just a few meters away from her. the owned himself was mixing drinks behind the bar and paced a glass of wine in front of a costumer. Not far from the table was Izzie who was waiting for her drink and not so subtle sneaking glances at Ales, who was across the room, throwing darts. He noticed her looking and smiled back at her. With a smile on her lips, she grabbed her drink and walked over to the table with George, Meredith and Amory who were sitting with their own drinks and snacks.

“I don’t know, when I left Cristina said she was okay,” George explained, having been the last one to check on the curly-haired woman.

“Nobody goes through what she went through and is totally over it by now,” Izzie reason, making hand gestures as she took a sip of her drink.

“Cristina can.” George shrugged.

“She’s fine,” Meredith stated, playing with the straw of her drink.

“Too fine. She’s cold,” The tall blonde said.

“Have you met Cristina?” Amory sarcastically said, downing the rest of her drink. “She’s hard-core. she does what she has to get through.”

“She lost a baby. She lost a fallopian tube. And she’s acting like she doesn’t even care.,” Izzie explained, not understanding Cristina’s thought process. Amory slightly rolled her eyes, sometimes Izzie could be oversensitive. She and Cristina were total opposites, one cared too much and the other cared too little. “She’s all, ‘hello, I’m totally fina’ person. I mean, she’s my friend too, but she’s acting like she has no emotions or warmth… like she’s missing a soul.”

“Again, have you met Cristina?” Amory repeated in the same tone of voice as previously.

George slightly chuckled. “God, she is gonna make a great surgeon.” He admired.

“George,” Izzie warned.

“It’s true,” He continued. “You show no weakness, you make it to the top.”

“Some people just keep their feelings to themselves.” Meredith shortly explained, looking at the tall blonde.

As the interns, except for Izzie and Cristina, enter their patient’s room along with their resident, they find a crowd surrounding the woman.

“So we were in the middle of the Belizean jungle and this jaguar jumped out and bites one of the guys. They all look at me, they’re yelling, ‘You’re a doctor, help him.’ This was the time a Ph.D. does no good.” The woman told her crowd as everyone laughed.

“I’m sorry, did I mess the bell for social hour?” Bailey stopped the story as she glanced around the room. Everyone glanced at each other and quickly left the room going back to do their jobs.

“Tales of missionary life.” The blond patient explained.

“You’re a missionary?” Izzie inquired excitedly.

“No, my parents. We traveled a lot, and they still do.”

“That’s great…” The former model started, before noticing her resident’s look. “Um, this is Dr. Burke’s patient, Kalpana Vera.”

“Kull-punnah.” She corrected the pronunciation. “Named by the villagers in Nepal.”

“She presents with multiple syncopal episodes and ventricular arrhythmias.”

“So you’ve been passing out?” Bailey asked the patient.

“Yeah, and having palpitations.”

“Past medical history of rheumatic heart disease with mitral valve stenosis.” Izzie continued while the other interns took notes.

“They had to ship me from Zambia to the States for three months of treatment when I was eight. Rheumatic fever almost killed me.” Kalpana clarified.

“Stevens, what are the primary causes of ventricular arrhythmia?” The resident questioned.

Suddenly, they heard a voice behind them that made Amory jump slightly. “Valvular disease, mitral valve prolapse, stimulants, drugs, and metabolic abnormalities,” Cristina yelled behind them, dressed in a hospital gown. Ate everyone’s looks, she asked. “What?” She was still attached to her IV stand and she looked pleased with herself since she knew to correct answer. Amory couldn’t help but smile at Cristina’s stubbornness.

“Out!” Bailey warned.

“I’m fine.” The intern protested.

“Out! You better be in your room by the time we round on you.”

“And when will that be?” The interns smiled at each other.

“In fifteen seconds. 14… 13… 12…11.” As the woman left, the slit of her hospital gown provided a view of her pink underwear.

“Nice panties, Yang.” Alex teased as the interns laughed, Amory burying her face on George’s shoulder.

“In your dreams, evil spawn!” Cristina hissed before finally going back to her room.

They finished everything up with Kalpana and mover on to the next patient, which was Cristina. She was lying in her bed again, while her mother was sitting on a couch beside a window sewing something.

“Cristina Yang, post-op day three from a unilateral salpingectomy,” Amory presented, trying not to laugh at the dirty look Cristina was sending her mother.

“And ready to get back to work,” Cristina cut in.

“Is she?” Her mother piped up.

Amory looked at Bailey. “She’s taking solids and her pain is controlled with oral meds.”

“See? I’m ready.” Cristina insisted.

“Didn’t the nurse say this morning you had a fever?” Her mom asked her.

“Mother,” Cristina snapped, glaring at her mother.

“Cristina, did you have a fever?” Bailey questions her intern with a stern look. Cristina debated telling her or not, but in the end, she told the truth.

“Temp spiked to 101 last night. Big deal.”

“She worked two shifts last month with a 102 degree flu,” George revealed to his resident, helping Cristina.

“Yes, exactly, George. Thank you.” Cristina thanked him, a smile gracing her lips.

“And we appreciate your dedication, but you’re staying in bed until it normalizes.” Bailey objected to Cristina’s idea of working again.

Her mother sighed, “I keep telling her there’s more to life than surgery and career.”

“Mother, go upholster something.” Cristina retorted, causing Amory to laugh under her breath.

“Look, I need you to relax. Shut up, and get better. You’re a patient this week, so you can be a doctor next week. Understand?” Bailey exited the room with her group behind her.

Before Amory and Meredith could leave, Cristina held onto their arms. “Mer, Amy, you cannot leave me alone with her. I’m flying over the cuckoo’s nest here. You have to save me.” She begged.

“You need time to heal,” Meredith sighed.

“I’m healed,” Cristina called after her as Meredith walked out of the room. ‘I’m healed!”

Seeing the hopeful look on her face, Amory sent her an apologetic look, feeling for the girl. “I’ll bring you some jello.”

“Fine, “She huffed. “But not the green. The green sucks.”

The next patient they were rounding on was Ellis Grey. Meredith didn’t look forward to it and hesitated before going into the room. Ellis was lying in her bed in a dark pink robe with her arms crossed over her chest. “Okay, Dr. O’Malley, you’re presenting,” Bailey said and signals George to begin. Amory already felt pity for the boy who Ellis thought was Thatcher.

“Okay, Dr. Grey is post-op day three from a tumor resection.”

“Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong,” Ellis interrupted him, thinking that they were going to perform surgery. George tried to start over, but Elllis wouldn’t let him. “He’s got it all wrong. It’s not asthma, it’s gerd. He needs a Nissen fundoplication.” A sigh left everyone’s lips in the room. Her eyes then landed on her daughter. “I don’t want her in the room.”

“Mom!”

“She’s a child, and I won’t have her on my team.”

“We’ll meet outside, Dr. Grey,” Bailey said to her intern and signaled for her to leave the room. She walked out of her mother’s room, stunned and angry at her mother. It was embarrassing that she had been kicked out of a patient’s room, her mother’s nonetheless.

Amory was assigned to a case with Alex that day. They had to look through the files of people in the waiting room needing to care for every single one of them. but, they were looking for the best one, the surgical one.

“Found a good one, Alex?” She asked as she stood behind him.

“I’m looking.” He replied. His main focus was on the files. His muttering suddenly stopped and his head shot up. with a confused look on his face, he showed the file to Amory.

She raised her brows. “Is this a joke? this can’t be real.” She said disbelievingly.

“A gunshot wound to the head? How is that freaking possible?” He looked around, but saw no one that had been shot in the head. “Where the hell is the gunshot wound to the head? Why wasn’t the trauma team called? Hello, are you insane?”

A nurse came up to the duo with answers. “There's your gunshot wound.” She gestured to the waiting room where a middle-aged brunette guy was sitting reading a magazine, looking perfectly okay. Except for the slight reddish bump on his forehead.

“Wait, that guy was shot in the head? Are you serious?” Amory asked again, her eyes on the man. She couldn’t believe it? the nurse nodded and helped the two interns bring the patient to one of the trauma rooms. Amory was still dumbfounded that the man was walking around and talking, and not in pain after being shot in the head. Alex was doing a physical and simple neuro exam as Amory wrote things down on the clipboard, listening to Alex in the meantime. There seemed to be no exit wound, only a burn on his forehead.

“I’m telling you, I shit myself. Pulled the trigger when I was cleaning my .22. I thought the clip was out. If you’re thinking suicide, don’t. People make mistakes. I made a mistake,” The man sounded resigned. “And now I’m paying for it.” He sighed and looked at the ceiling.”But I did shoot myself.” The two interns looked at him, not believing a single word he said. There was no way this was possible, in any way, shape or form.

“Yeah, right, and I have a bullet in my knee.” Amory muttered to herself. Alex had heard her and turned around with his signature smirk on his face, trying to hold his laughter.

As Meredith, Cristina and Amory sat in the tunnels, the last one reading an article, as the Asian woman charted.

“Addison gave Derek divorce papers. It’s good.” Meredith said.

“So, is she leaving? I know you don’t like her, but I really like working with her. Besides if it weren’t for her being McDreamy’s wife I think you’d like her too.” Amory spoke up, Meredith nodding at her absentmindedly.

“You know it’s fine to me that you work with her, you shouldn’t hold back on you career just because I dated her husband.” The dirty blonde said, making the short girl give her an appreciative smile. “I mean, she’s still here, being Addison but it’s not like I’m jealous or anything.”

“It’s okay if you are, you know. Derek puth you and her in a very uncomfortable situation…” The short girl answered.

“That’s odd…” Cristina whispers.

“It’s odd that I’m not jealous?”

“No, you have every right to be jealous. It’s your territory and she’s peeing all over it. What’s odd is Burke’s patient. She’s been in four hospitals this year…”

“You seem awfully interested in Burke’s patient…” Meredith pointed out.

“This has nothing to do with Burke…”

“Cristina, you lost a Fallopian tube, a baby and a boyfriend all at once, you don’t have to be okay.” Amory explained. “I would.”

“Yeah, you have a right to be upset.” The dirty blonde shared.

“And you’re losing McDreamy to his perfect wife, you have a right to be jealous.” Cristina deadpanned.

“I did not lose McDreamy. There’s divorce papers, remember? I’m not jealous.”

“And I’m not upset.”

“You really are gonna keep fooling yourselves?” The short girl pleaded. “Besided, shouldn’t you be in your room, Cristina?”

“Okay, if the situation was reversed, would you want to spend time with your mother in a confined room, with one window?” It took a moment before Amory decided to answer.

“My mom wouldn’t even come here. She’s too high or drunk to get to the airport or go through security. Neither of my parents would. “

“I didn’t know that, I’m sorry.” Cristina commented feeling for the girl. “And you Mer, would you survive with your mom constantly in your room if you were me?”

“Do you think we’re like them? Our mothers?” The dirty blonde questioned.

Amory and Alex were in an exam room standing next to Derek as they looked at Samuel, their patient, and his wife. They had confirmed earlier that he did have a bullet in his head. While they had been waiting for the scans, they had been interrupted twice, once by the patient’s wife and the other time by Meredith’s mother. She had managed to slip past George and ended up in the viewing room. Amory just shook her head at her poor boyfriend who was stuck babysitting for the day.

“You understand that we’ll need to do a psych evaluation?” The neurosurgeon asked the married couple.

“How many times do we have to tell you? He wasn’t trying to kill himself. It was an accident.” The wife repeated, not too happy with the question, while her husband didn’t really mind.

“They’re just trying to do their job, hon.” Samuel tried to calm her down.

“Well… no, their job is to make you better.”

“Where were you when the gun went off?” Shepherd asked the woman while walking around the bed and closer to the patient.

“I was in the next room, and I heard the shot and it was awful.” She immediately said.

“Why didn’t you call 911?” Alex asked. Amory couldn’t help but nod in agreement. She had been thinking the same thing. She could at least have called an ambulance. That was a normal response after hearing a gunshot. The blonde crossed her arms over her chest like Alex did and stared at the wife.

“Cause he was only unconscious for a moment and then… then he was, he was walking and talking and…” The patient’s wife stuttered hoping that her explanation had convinced the group of doctors.

“You’re going to have to give a report to the police.” Derek interrupted the woman’s explanation and crossed his arms too.

“Police?”

“What… what do we need to talk to the police about?”

“Whenever someone comes in with a gunshot wound, we need to report it to the police. It’s the law.” Amory clarified. She then followed the attending alongside Alex away from the couple. Mrs. Linden stroked her husband’s cheek and mouthed that it would be okay, but her husband turned his head away from her. Looks like there was some trouble in paradise.

While Derek, Alex, and Amory were performing surgery on Samual, Mrs. Linden was being interrogated by the police. the three of them had overheard a fight they had and discovered that the wife shot their patient after finding out he had been cheating on her. Something none of them thought of.

Alex was standing next to Amory just looking, while she took the lead. “This is one sick bastard. We should flip him over and give him a spine.” Alex commented as he looked at the unconscious patient.

“Hold back on that retractor, Dr. Madden.” Derek said to the blonde before speaking to the woman who stood next to Alex. “Little suction, Bokhee.”

“Covering for his wife after she shot him.”

“He did cheat on her.”

“That’s no excuse to shoot hum in the head, or anywhere. I get that she was angry, but shooting him? That’s maybe a bit too much, right?” Amory joined in but kept her eyes down on the patient in front her.

“Relationships are built on sacrifice.”

“Not that kind of sacrifice.”

“Hmm, I don’t know. Sometimes a bullet’s worth it.” The two interns shared a look before their eyes landed on the neurosurgeon. You could feel that not everyone felt comfortable after that comment, but no one commented on it. From time to time, someone spoke up during surgery, starting a short conversation, but overall it was silent in the OR.

Hours later, the surgery was successfully finished and Samuel was brought to the post-recovery ward. He woke up a little later and had questions about his wife?

“What did she tell them?”

“That you cheated on her. That she was drunk. You were cleaning your guns in the kitchen.” Derek answered as he was writing something down in the man’s chart.

“I’m not gonna press charges.”

“That doesn’t matter. She confessed and that meanest assault on the first degree.” Amory replied as she looked at the patient, who looked sad.

“They arrested her?”

“Man, you should be grateful.” Alex joined the conversation.

“You know what I am? Stupid. Nothing will make you feel more stupid than cheating on the woman you love. You don’t know what you’re missing.” The two guys pondered this while both thinking of the woman they loved. Izzie was waiting outside the room, putting away a chart at the nurses’ station. Alex made eye contact with her and she smiled back at him before walking away.

After Derek had left, Amory turned to face Alex. “Hey, good luck with the Chied and your date with Izzie. Don’t be an ass, please, she doesn’t deserve more than the ass version of you.” She patted his shoulder before walking away.

As Amory and Meredith got a page, they run to Cristina’s room and find her bawling.

“What’s going on?” The blonde asked.

“I can’t stop. I can’t… I can’t stop…” Cristina explained, tears running down her face.

“Crying, she can’t stop crying.” Izzie explained.

“I can see that.” Meredith answered.

“What did you do to her?” Amory furrowed her brows.

“Nothing.”

“She’s gonna dehydrate. Cristina, do you want some water?” George offered.

As Amory went to hug her, George grabbed her arm and pulled her away. “No!”

“I’ve tried that, it just made it worse.” The taller blonde explained.

“Okay, try to take deep breaths.” The short blonde advised.

“I knew she’d break sooner or later, just a matter of time.” Her mother explained, a hand to her chest.

“I will kill her!” Cristina yelled between sobs and Meredith escorted the woman out of the room.

“We don’t do well with mothers here. Why don’t you leave and come back later.”

“Cristina?” Amory asked, giving her a tissue.

“Make it stop! Make it stop!” She pleaded.

“Okay, enough of being nice.” The short girl got closer and yelled at her friend. “You are Cristina Yang, first of her clas in Stanford, remember who you are!” The crying girl’s sobs grew quieter. “If you want to cry; you get to cry, but you are in control of your own body! Now, if you don’t stop I’m going to need to slap you for the shock, so I’d advice you to get your shit together!” Cristina finally stopped crying and wiped her tears with her hand.

“It stopped! Thank you, Amy.”

“Oh god, Amy, I’m a bit scared of you now.” George joked.

“Well, it’s very simple. Don’t do anything to make me mad so I don’t have to be mad.” The girl shrugged.

At the end of the day, Amory and George arrived at home together and flopped down on the couch.

“You know, I kind of liked seeing that side of you with Cristina today…” George said, kissing her as Amory smiled a little.

��Really?”

“Yeah, it was, um… it was kind of hot.”

“Really?” She asked once more, her tone now changing from sweet to slightly provocative, raising one brow.

“Really.” He kissed her deeper as their tongues came to play. However, once it seemed that the make out session might escalate, the girl broke the kiss.

“How about I go make us some dinner?” She suggested, standing up from the couch, a quizzical look on the boy’s face at the sudden change of heart.

Could you write a little scene with Zhora and MC. Perhaps after a fight where Zhora protected MC, they go back to Zhora's room and she makes sure MC isn't wounded...

Took me a while, but here’s your work! Thanks for my first request, I hope you’ll like it!

Warnings: Injuries, a little angst, a little tension, a teasing Wyst

Rating: T

“I told you not to go in there!”

You smile weakly when she still has enough energy to scold you while running. You’re hoisted on her shoulder, wondering how the fuck she manages to carry you and shoot, but honestly, you’re not complaining.

“Hey, I got the gun back.”

You wave the small blaster in your hand, grinning a little, and she growls in frustration, shooting behind herself and hitting one of the goons in their leg, making them stumble and fall.

“Score.”

You catch the quick, smug grin just as her expression shifts to angry again.

“No amount of flattery can save you right now, princess.”

“Heh…”

While she shoots another few charges behind you, you manage to activate your comm, trying to reach the ship.

“Did you two kick that idiot’s butt?”

“Kinda. Wyst, we need-”

“Our beloved princess got herself shot and some goons are chasing us. Mind getting us out of here?”

“Aaaw-”

“I swear, if you tease me now, I’m gonna-”

“Alright, alright. Ship now, teasing later. See ya!”

With that, Wyst drops out, and Zhora growls again.

“If she says anything about this, I’ll hold you responsible.”

You swallow, rubbing the back of your head. Knowing Wyst, she wouldn’t let the chance pass. Ever.

Some jerk had stolen one of the guns Zhora had designed herself, and upon realizing, she had tossed you a Kalpana and sprinted after him, with you staying close. Some of the idiot’s goons waited for you two in front of a warehouse, and Zhora had stopped to take most of them out while you ran onward, ignoring her warning while moving into the building. That guy had been getting on your nerves for far too long now, trying to blackmail Zhora, trying to threaten her. Actually stealing that thing had definitely been the final straw. You were too angry. In the end, you had managed to tackle him down and wrench the gun from his grip, but not before a shot had grazed your abdomen and one hit your leg.

So now Zhora is carrying you with one hand and shooting the remaining goons with the other, running towards the spaceport where Wyst prepares your ship for departure.Soon, the port is in sight, and Zhora redoubles her effort to save both of you, sprinting over the ramp to the ship just in the moment Wyst walks out, carrying a gun the size of her leg, smirking.

“I always wanted to use that thing.”

“Feel free.”

While Wyst unleashes fury on anyone trying to stop her, Zhora heads to her room and lets you slip onto her bed, giving you a look that promises trouble.

“I’m going to start this ship now, and then I’ll be back. Don’t move.”Y

ou nod, and a quick smile flashes over her face.

“Good girl.”

With that, she closes the door, leaving you alone to your flushed cheeks. You let your head fall against her pillows, not able to suppress a smile when you smell the scent of her shampoo. The ship comes to life with a purr of the engines, and you hear Wyst shouting “Goodbye, suckers!” before she closes the hatch, her head peeking around the corner of Zhora’s room a moment after.

“You okay?”

You shrug and then wince when the wound on your abdomen stings. Wyst scrunches her face in sympathy, stepping into the room.

“I’m sure we can patch you up. How’d the thing go?”

“Got the gun back.”

“Thanks to a rash decision that might’ve killed us both.”

Zhora has walked up behind Wyst, medical kit in her hand and a mildly annoyed expression on her face. Wyst immediately sports a shit-eating grin before she turns to Zhora, lifting an imaginary hat.

“Ah, the chivalrous gunslinger herself. Saved your princess from certain death?”

Zhora pinches the bridge of her nose, sighing before she shoots you a glare that reminds you of her earlier words.

“In fact, I did.”

“You’re exaggerating.”

“Princess, you got shot in your abdomen and your leg. We’re lucky the jerk apparently missed your organs and arteries, otherwise you might as well be dead right now. How’s that for exaggerating?”

Wyst clears her throat.

“Zhora’s right. And I think both of us wouldn’t want you dead.”

You shoot her a grin despite the seriousness.

“Just because you’d have one less person to tease then, hm?”

Wyst chuckles, shrugging.

“You know me too well.”

When Zhora glares at her though, she turns her back to you, walking out of the room.

“I’ll leave you two to it and… uh, check whether anything got damaged.”

The door closes behind her and Zhora sighs.

“What am I going to do with you?”

“Patch me up with that fancy kit of yours?”

A quick smile flashes over her face before it’s replaced by the stern expression from before again. She nods, walking over to the bed and placing the kit next to her, examining the burned holes in your clothes.

“Where does it hurt the most?”

“Right now? I’m still pretty high on adrenaline, so…”

Zhora hums, her hands coming up and unbuttoning the coat you’re wearing, starting at the bottom, wandering higher. She’s extra careful when she passes the wound, her face scrunching a little when you wince. The gentle pressure of her fingers has your mind drift away a little, to another situation when she unbuttoned your clothes, when-

Her fingers brush your throat as she undoes the last button, and your face feels a little hotter than before. Looking at you with a glint of worry in her eyes, a little smile creeps onto her face as she takes in your expression. You avert your eyes, knowing she knows what you just thought about.

“I’m going to cut your shirt.”

“Huh?”

“It’s ruined anyway, and I don’t want to move you around too much.”

“O-okay.”

She gives you another smile, taking out a pair of scissors and starting the cut at the hem, wandering up, making sure not to cut you. But the metal is cool on your skin. Her eyes, utterly focused on you. The ghost of her breath on the skin she exposes. Her other hand on your body, making sure everything goes smoothly.

The scissors pass your breasts, joined by a gentle touch holding the material in place. You swallow, thoughts racing, sure she might as well feel your heart beating rapidly.Zhora straightens her back when she reaches the collar and cuts it open, baring your body to the air of the ship… and her eyes.

You meet them when they flicker to your face, and a chuckle escapes her. She leans forward until she’s hovering over you.

“Didn’t know you’d be into me patching you up.”

“Did you do it like that on purpose?”

“…no. If I’d wanted, you’d be a mess right now.”

“What’s stopping you?”

She looks taken aback for a moment until her expression turns scolding.

“Firstly, you’re injured. Secondly, I’d actually need to patch you up first. Thirdly…”

And for that she leans even closer, your lips inches apart, her breath tickling your skin.

“… do you think your behavior today deserves such a reward?”

You look at her, mouth slightly open, unable to reply. She pulls back, an eyebrow raised, smirk on her face, before she moves back again, shifting her weight until she’s able to move the fabric away from where the plasma grazed your side. You hiss when it touches the burn, and then sigh when Zhora smears a cooling salve over it that almost soothes the sting completely. Looking up to you, she makes sure you’re not in too much pain when she covers the wound, smiling then.

“There we are.”

“Mhm…”

Hey, her hands on your skin feel amazing. As always. She grins, winking at you while her hands move to the hem of your pants.

Right. The other wound is on your leg. Fuck.

She gently undoes the button and zip of the garment, and then pulls it down equally slow, making sure not to hurt you. Her fingers brush the skin of your thighs, and you feel your cheeks darkening… her eyes keep being locked on yours and you swear there’s something else than concern slowly forming in her mind. But that all doesn’t matter when the fabric loosens from the burn.

Pain shoots through you, disgusting, stinging pain, and a distressed noise leaves you. Zhora’s immediately stops moving her hands, instead coming up to kiss your forehead.

“Princess, I gotta… it’s gonna hurt a bit, but after that, I can tend to it, okay?”

You swallow and nod, preparing yourself for what’s to come. Zhora almost tears the pants away, and it stings like hell, making a slight scream leave you. You somehow register her throwing your pants somewhere before a few seconds after, the wonderful feeling of the balm soothes the burn, having you make a sound that somehow sounds like a small moan.

“You did it.”

When you look down to Zhora with tears at the corner of your eyes, she gives you one of her dazzling smiles before tending to you again. You practically feel her mood shift when she looks at the burn more closely and then moves to get a spray that will let it heal more quickly.

“What were you thinking, running in like that?”

She whispers, emotions in her voice you’ve rarely heard before. You’re taken aback by the raw feeling, swallowing.

“I… I was angry at him. I wanted to… show him no one can do this and get away with it. I mean, you worked on this for months and-”

“Fuck that thing!”

“What?”

“Fuck it. No gun is worth your life. I- I could’ve lost you and-”

She pauses, looking up at you with horror in her eyes. When she talks again, it’s barely more than a whisper.

“I don’t want to think about losing you.”

She turns back down to the wound, swallowing before she bandages it. Quick, methodical. Barely after she’s finished, she stands up without a further word, exiting the room and closing the door.

You remain there, flabbergasted at what the heck just happened, the call for her stuck in your throat.

What did that mean?Does she have feelings for me?I mean… I shouldn’t get my hopes up.

She’s smart, sassy, gorgeous, lots of fun and the few times you’ve had sex definitely helped stir something between you. You are sure you have feelings that go deeper than that, just never found the courage to actually admit them to yourself… and, gods forbid, her.

But that look in her eyes…

You need to know, pain be damned. Moving slowly, you lean up on the sheets, until you’re sitting upright. You shift to the edge of the bed, slipping off and hissing when your weight strains you injured leg. But you keep on until you stand on mostly both legs, limping to the door and opening it. Voices ring from the end of the ship, but you’re too concentrated on keeping upright to fully listen. Keeping tight to the wall, you move towards the cockpit.

“Are you fucking stupid?”

“Wh-”

“This beautiful girl is on our ship, you’ve made it hard for me to sleep sometimes, she’s legitimately interested in your life and you’re too scared to… shoot your shot?”

“Wyst, I-”

“And honestly, if you say anything of “she probably doesn’t like me back”, you’re not only daft, but blind as well.”

With a hiss, the door opens. Both heads turn to you, panting and keeping a tight grip on the frame to keep upright.

“H-hey…”

You manage a weak smile, and Wyst is the first to catch her surprise, only to burst out laughing.

“You…”

She laughs on, holding a hand up to indicate she wants to say something, and desperately tries to calm down. Zhora avoids your eyes and swallows, and when Wyst manages to get herself reined in, she still cackles.

“I… uhm. You might have forgotten something crucial before coming here.”

Oh, right.

CLOTHES.

While you feel the heat crawling up your face, you clear your throat.

“…probably the first time you got an eyeful in ages, eh?”

Wyst moves a hand in front of her chest in mock insult.

“How dare you hurt me so?”

You shrug, and she shakes her head, looking to Zhora and then to you.

“And you two need to talk. Now. I won’t allow things getting awkward on this ship, so I’m ending this phase right before it starts.”

You turn your attention to Zhora, who is currently taking a deep breath.

“Fine.”

“Woo!”

Wyst grins, turning away to the console.

“Have fun, you two!”

Zhora glares at her before walking to you, wrapping an arm around your waist and allowing you to put the other around her shoulders. She says nothing on the way to her room, and when the door closes, she sighs, helping you lie down on the bed, a firm touch being enough to keep you there. She stands up herself, looking to her working table.

“…how much did you hear?”

“Something about you being daft and blind. And about shooting your shot.”

She rubs the back of her head, a small blush forming on her face.

“About that, I-”

She clears her throat, her hands fidgeting a little.

“I’m not easily worried. Or scared. I know how to talk or shoot my way out of a situation to save myself.”

She takes a deep breath, eyes making contact with yours for a second before she averts them again.

“But… today, I didn’t know if I could save you. And it… it horrified me.”

Zhora starts pacing, trying to emphasize her words through gestures.

“When I saw you run into there, I got worried. When I heard the gunshots, it was like I was shot myself. I was… so relieved to see you still alive, and angry. Angry at the fucker for shooting you. Angry at you for running in. But mostly… I was angry at myself for not making it in time.”

Her shoulders sag, and she walks over to the bed, taking a seat next to you and placing a hand on your cheek.

“Promise me you’ll never do that again.”

You give her a short smile, thoughts racing in your brain.

“I promise.”

“Good.”

She returns your expression so warmly that you’re sure your knees would have buckled if you weren’t lying down. But then, her eyes turn hard again.

“And what was that about walking all the way to the cockpit? You could’ve reopened the wounds!”

“… I was scared I did something wrong?”

“You did something… what?”

“I mean, maybe I gave you the wrong impression or I should’ve answered or-”

“Princess, shut that beautiful mouth of yours before I make you.”

Your rambling turns into a smirk.

“Is that a challenge?.

She winks, leaning down towards you.

“Not yet. You’re still injured.”

When you pout, Zhora laughs.

“Don’t worry, princess. Soon."

“Soon.”

And when she kisses you, you think getting injured might not have been so bad afterall.

A Story of Dreams and Deceit - Chapter 1

So I was rewatching Peaky Blinders just after rereading ACOMAF and an idea popped inside my head, the Inner Circle as a gang in the 20′s. Because of language barriers I couldn’t make them British (I can’t speak with a British accent, let alone write it - and I don’t know any brit slang) so I decided to place them in New York. The beginning of this story is in 1919, before the Prohibition.

If it has any success, this story will be a multichapter fic.

Kalpana's Pub looked deserted. Light shone through the stained glass illuminating the room, specks of dust resided on the tables, noticeable only in the harsh daylight. There was a man hunched over near the bar, cleaning out shreds of glass from the floor. There was no one around to help him. The stench of cigars and alcohol told Feyre how different the place looked in the evening. "Hello, I'm here to apply for the position available." The man turned around to greet her but upon seeing her, his face fell. "The position has already been filled." Feyre didn't believe him for a second. "The job offer was filed in the newspaper yesterday." "Look Miss, I'm doing you a favor. You don't want to work here." "I've worked as a barmaid before, I even have references-" Feyre went to take out her papers but the owner interrupted her. "You're too pretty to work here. If someone wants you, I can't stop them." "I can fend for myself. I'm not looking for a guardian. I'm looking for a job." "I am the owner of this pub but the streets are ruled by the Orfeo gang. This pub is their meeting point of choice. Are you sure this is the type of crowd you want to mix in with?" Feyre nodded determined. The man shook his head silently. "Fair enough Miss-" "Archeron." "Alright, Miss Archeron, let's see if you can handle this establishment for a night."

One month later

Feyre poured another glass of whiskey and passed it to the customer waiting on one of the bar stools. She smiled as soon as she saw who was coming in the pub. "Feyreee!!! It's time to celebrate! Give us the good stuff!" Cassian shoved the man aside from the stool generally considered his own. "And what are we celebrating exactly?" Feyre turned around to pick a bottle of irish whiskey from the top shelf. "Cass!" Azriel interrupted him and with a simple head gesture told his brother to join him in their private room. "Agh, duty awaits my fair maiden. Bring that bottle to the family room will you? Az's head will combust if I'm not stepping in there right behind him," and with those last words he departed. She let a gentle smile tug at her lips before she picked a chair to climb on. The top shelf was too high for her to reach. "The usual should suffice for the occasion, darling." The soft voice just behind her made goosebumps on her neck. She could feel him behind her. "I'm sorry, I thought you had cause for celebration. Top shelf whiskey had been requested." She stepped down and only too late did she realize the movement would bring her chest to chest with him. The lack of space between the pair drew a few stares. No one stood this close to Rhysand - no one except those he threatened, and his close family on occasion. Since it was a known fact she was only a mere barmaid, and the smile on his face showed they were definitely not enemies - it only made those eyes more curious. "I'm afraid my brother is a bit ahead the rest of us. There's no reason to celebrate...yet. Tomorrow night we hope to pop that top shelf stuff." "What's happening tomorrow?" Feyre asked even if she knew the chances of getting an actual answer out of him were slim. Still, she tried. Rhys little smile broadened at that. "We're going to the races, darling." Feyre scrunched her eyebrows in confusion. "Wear something nice. Red." His violet eyes sparkled. "I'm going?" "Of course." "I don't have a dress." This time Rhys looked confused. "Well, not a nice dress, that is. Definitely not a nice, red dress." She noticed the playful glint in her eyes was not missed. "I'll take care of that. Someone will drop it tomorrow morning with the money for your trouble." Rhys replied but his eyes were at the door of their family room, where Mor was waiting impatiently. "Oh, so this is business then." Feyre didn't let the disappointment sink in. But the sentiment had been transparent enough in her voice for Rhys to notice. "Feyre-" "Rhys!!!" His cousin shouted from across the bar. "Everyone's waiting! We do have other things to do than wait around for you to try and get under Feyre's skirts." Feyre looked struck at the menace in his cousin's words. "I'm sorry Feyre, it's not about you. I'm just a bit nervous for tomorrow." Mor tried to assure her. "It's okay." She tried to sound fine but she heard the forced tone in her own voice. "Feyre, why don't you go home early? Tomorrow will be a full day, you need your rest," Rhys proposed. "You're joining Rhys at the races?" Mor sounded genuinely enthused. She simply nodded, in response to both of them as she dropped her apron.

Feyre went to talk with George, her actual boss before leaving. "Mr. Orfeo sent me home." He looked worried. "Did you upset him? Feyre I warned you not to upset Mr. Orfeo, I cannot protect you-" "No, I did not upset him-" "Is he expecting trouble then?" "I don't think so..." "Then why would he send you home? Mr. Orfeo knows I need help tonight during the rush." Feyre was uncertain. Should she just ignore Rhys and stay to help or- "You go, if Mr. Orfeo told you to go, you go. I'll deal with it."

She stared at the painting in front of her, determined to forget the real reason for being in the museum. She imagined herself to be just an art enthusiast who came here for inspiration, or peace and quiet. Really, she imagined herself before...all of this. Before her mother's untimely death, her estrangement with her sisters, before- "Feyre, is something the matter?" The sentiment in his voice made her body go stiff. She'd forgotten about that. Amidst everything she had forgotten about it all. "No, I actually have good news." Feyre forced a smile on her lips. "Rhysand Orfeo has invited me to join him tomorrow at the races. From the excitement and agitation surrounding his family members it's something big. It's some important business and he trusts me enough to invite me along." "I knew you could do it Feyre. I knew you could gain his trust. But I didn't expect him to involve you personally in his business. You don't have to go, you can decline. There are other ways to attain the information we need." "Do not underestimate me, Commissioner Burnham." "I'm just worried." "I'll let you know how everything pans out." With that Feyre stood up and left.

The Finalysis: @askgiegueandcrew

Hey y’all! Here is my first post in The Finalysis. Below, I analyze the personalities of 26 characters from @askgiegueandcrew and @bunchofaliens, in alphabetical order. Here are a few summary charts:

“Holy heck there’s a lot of characters right now.” -M

Without further ado, here are my explanations for why I put those characters where I did — and why I excluded the characters that I did.

Bala: Probably ESFP.

“Rather over the top and exaggerated,” Kalpana’s husband “has a more serious side, too, but it's very hard to get him to show it.” Being extra indicates extraversion and a high Feeling function, since if it was lower then he would not be so open with his emotions. A lack of seriousness is most common in E__P types. A love of explosions often comes from Se’s visceral love of intense sensory experience, and boy does he love explosions. His only line in the @askgiegueandcrew narrative is “I’m going to blast all this out of the way!” (not counting his one line on @bunchofaliens discussing his family tree) with a scarily huge wide-eyed grin to match.

Captain Deepsea ("Malarky"): Seems like an INFJ.

Despite being funkiest disco-loving robot in the solar system, Captain Deepsea comes across as more of a wise father figure than a wild partier. He is "very, very patient" and warmhearted towards his crew. This kindness combines with his curiosity to produce an unusual amount of leniency. Contrast the rigid, strict rule enforcement of the predominantly ISTJ gieeg and Starman leadership — particularly as displayed by Alum, Giegue, and Henry Killjoy. Unlike any other Starman Army leader save Niiue, "the word most folks would use to describe Deepsea" is "[e]ccentric." Malarky's voice carries a tone of "calm authority," and he gains respect from his subordinates not by explicitly demanding it but earning it implicitly through socialization, as one would expect from a Fe rather than Te user. He keeps his cape for sentimental reasons, again implying F over T. While not obvious, Ni seems implicit in his love of learning and his humor style of playing with language. For the latter, consider his in-game speech to Alin and co: "I knew you'd come after the *whirr* Apple ... [but] if you fell me, more take my place ... So how do you like them apples?"

I am not entirely confident calling Malarky Ni-dominant, though, because he “Likes following orders,” rarely questions them, and fully swallowed Giegue's Kool-Aid (e.g. when he said in CogDis that "the might of the Transcendent One is approaching infinity itself"). I would have expected that, at some point, the gieegs' orders would conflict with an INFJ's idealism (contrast Istic, Hahu, and Harod). The Captain seems chill about everything, whereas an INFJ often has Very Lofty and Serious Ideals. Still, Malarky does not seem to show Fi's fiery individualism, Ti's blunt lack of social tact, Si's rigid standards, or Se's impulsivity in his dominant function. I could see him as a high Ne-user, but even ignoring his obedience, that would imply either high Ti or high Fi. INFJ it is, I guess.

Crazy-Eyes: No clue.

The only things that I know about this mysterious character are that 1) they have crazy eyes, 2) Origen thinks they are "very talented," and 3) they dislike anons bursting into their lab. At this point, I cannot even venture a guess.

Emmet: Probably ESFJ, maybe ISFJ.

Despite being a fairly simple "music dork" who only wants to play his guitar, I found Emmet difficult to figure out. At first I considered him an introvert because he is generally passive and indifferent, letting things happen to him without much agency. But even though Vivek thinks that Emmet is a jerk, Emmet shows dominant Fe. Showing affection to random anons is no problem for him.

More importantly, he is loyal to his friends (Fe) and then to authority (Si) in that order. When helping the protagonists steal an Apple piece from Giegue, he thought primarily about how it would make his friends feel. While he called Col. Saturn "real great" for "explainin' all this stuff to me" because it "[m]akes it feel a lot less like I’m breakin’ too many rules!," he felt bad about disappointing Malars. Despite his treason, Emmet is very obedient. He betrayed Giegue only because his friends asked. Afterwards, Emmet had no problem deciding to turn himself in. Even though losing his guitar devastated him, he still prioritized completing his work. When asked by Harod, he did not even understand the concept of questioning authority. These show high Si, and thus ESFJ.

Euclid: Seems like an ESFJ, maybe ENFP.

An enthusiastically creative, determined kid with a goal-oriented mindset, a positive attitude, and a lot of respect for authority figures. Positivity and enthusiasm support E_F_. Determination and respect for authority support high Si. While his occasional randomness and righteously indignant sass make ENFP also seem likely — especially since he does not seem to care about being messy — his strong work-related principles imply strong Si. I considered that an ENFJ typing could reconcile those traits, but they still seem Ne/Si and I have seen no evidence of Ni or Se. I do not think I have seen enough of Euclid to type him precisely.

Giegue: Definitely ISTJ.

Giselle: Seems like an ESFP, maybe ESTP.

"No number of yesterdays are more important than today. That's where you gotta focus." This “short description” of Giselle shows Se’s focus on living in the present, without planning for the future or dwelling on the past. Her “occupation” is a “Sled Expert and Life Enjoyer” and she is “[a]lways looking for excitement and fun things to do,” showing that she prioritizes new experiences (Se) and happiness (Fi) over practical matters (Te) or long-term goals (Ni). As is most common for E_F_ types, her “personality” is “[b]right and chipper!” and she “talks fast ... like a hurricane.” The latter shows how, in contrast to I__J types, she takes life at a fast pace. Inferior Ni is evident not only in her ignorance of long term goals, but in that she “dislikes ... books” and wants “noooo, no, no reading.” Her “bad habits” include “[p]ushing on ahead no matter what without stopping to think about things,” again showing that the long-term planning function Ni is inferior. Her “sworn enemy” is “[s]ocietal constraints,” showing Se’s love of freedom and Fi’s prioritization of personal passion over politeness and social norms.

I found no posts about Giselle on Tumblr, so I based my conclusion entirely on her Charahub. Since I have not seen any dialogue or social interactions including her, I cannot claim much confidence in assigning her a personality type even though the Charahub description strongly indicates Se-dominance. She could also potentially be an ESTP: although I have seen no evidence of Ti, I have seen nothing to rule it out either.

Kalpana: Probably ESFJ.

The loving mother of Vivek and Mips, Kalpana tries to help others and take care of their needs. "She tries to be very positive and loves to help out[;] is outgoing among small groups, but closes up a lot in crowds[; and] is rather dreamy." Fe-dominants disproportionately radiate positivity and love to help others. It is somewhat surprising that she closes up in crowds and is rather dreamy, as those would be more expected for an I, N, and/or P type. Still, her "patience level" is "[v]ery high with everyone who isn't Malik or Nila," so in other words, she automatically extends patience to everyone who is not rude. That shows dominant Fe because of the expectation of reciprocal kindness in social behavior. The "deadly sin that best represents" her is "wrath," which would be difficult to explain in an I_FJ. The "most important person in [her] life" is "everyone in her family," which coheres well with SFJs' tendency to value family more than other types.

Working as a "spiritual healer/housewife" shows her Fe-based desire to nurture. She seems to have a penchant for giving gifts to others, which demonstrates the wide-ranging generosity of dominant Fe. In Niiue's mind, her manifestation asked if he'd had enough to eat, showing that she is a Mom Friend even to others besides her children. She is still very strong-willed and can be very blunt, as shown by her badass/sassy response to Porky and repulsion to Malik, making an I_F_ type unlikely. Together, these imply ESFJ.

Keter: Seems like an INFP.

Similar to her brother Euclid, but less likely to take initiative and more likely to enjoy solitary activities like reading. I thought she was ISFJ at first, but she does not seem to show the typical ISFJ nervousness — at least as much as someone like Mips. She is also much more of a daydreamer than most Si-dominants. Her hopeless-romantic attitude supports an INFP typing, as does the possibly Ne-based randomness she shares with her brother. Like her brother, I have not seen enough of her to be sure.

Koru: No clue.

I have found no information about her personality, including on her Charahub page and the two posts that she appeared in on @askgiegueandcrew.

Lilac: No clue.

I have not seen enough content to guess Ano’s and Ore’s mother’s type. While her Charahub calls her “[v]ery, very bitter and very, very troubled” and notes that she “can seem very threatening when she wants to be,” these are insufficient for me to hazard a decent guess — especially since the latter is probably situational: “She was put under house arrest because she wouldn't help the government convince her mate to cooperate.” Her demeanor sounds like it might be an INTJ’s, but I have only stereotypes to use there.

Lochan: Probably an ISTP.

"Spooks' perpetually grumpy dad" has precisely the opposite attitude as his daughter: where she is eternally upbeat and optimistic, Lochan "comes off as really grumpy and really ill-tempered." A grumpy attitude often implies I_T_, since introverts are less likely to enjoy social interaction and Thinkers are less likely to care about appearing friendly. As another factor explaining his grumpiness, "he just isn't the best at showing how he feels about others," showing inferior Fe. The "most appropriate TV Trope(s)" to describe him include "[s]our outside sad inside" and "Silly rabbit idealism is for kids," again showing the lack of Fe's warmth and idealism. I_T_ types are probably most likely to frequently call others idiots, as he evidently does.

Lochan's "bad habits" include "[t]alking without thinking things through," showing Se's impulsivity. When asked his age, he dismissed the question as irrelevant, showing the STP impatience for the impractical. The hair-trigger argumentative temper evident in his "strong opinions" and tendency to yell about them also indicates Se rather than Ne (compare Zarbol and contrast Ano), since ESTPs often become angry in arguments whereas ENTPs simply like to troll. If he had high Ne, he would probably show mischievous (contrast Ano and Static) or eccentric (contrast Niiue and Origen) behavior, but he shows neither.

Loris: Seems like an INFP.

This “standard blue starman” is “[f]airly straight forward,” but “can get a bit too curious and nosy about things” and is. A bit. Gullible.” Curiosity is most common in high Ne-users, and NF types are often gullible because they lack ST-types’ realistic (S) skepticism (T). Loris’s “patience” is “high,” unlike high Se-users. The limited dialogue that Loris gives shows the same kind of eccentric strangeness as Origen (INTP): “[T]his one is a wobblebot, look at it go! Wobble wobble, wobble wobble!” As a “Wide-eyed Idealist,” Loris lacks the cynicism one would expect from an I_T_ type. His “bad habits” include “[w]andering after his friends,” often right behind them: “[L]oris is really annoying and follows his friends around places,” showing a lack of the social awareness that one would expect from a high Fe-user.

Manjula ("Jula"): Probably ENFJ, maybe ESFJ.

This “too precious” child practically radiates dominant Fe. Blatantly kind, caring, “full of love,” and empathetic, she generally tries to help everyone. Friendship is one of her strongest values. Her voice is "[s]oft and kind," and conveys sincere interest in others. She has a special talent for "[o]rganizing groups together and encouraging teamwork." Manjula is a "responsible child who has a good amount of bravery and intuition about getting others to work together well," which shows Fe-dominance because auxiliary Fe would be much more passive. Frankly, if she is not Fe-dominant, I will eat a hat. Perhaps Manjula and Iso should have a fight to the death to see who better exemplifies the wholesome sweetness of dominant Fe, if either could ever be convinced to fight.

I am less sure that Manjula has Ni instead of Si, but her dialogue often seems to carry Ni's undertone of wisdom beyond her years.

Max: No clue.

I have not seen enough content to make a guess. I only know that he "do[es] not want to fight" and that he was scrapped, but those say little about his personality type.

Mips: Definitely ISFJ.

Cute nervous cinnamon roll who likes to take things slowly instead of acting on impulse. His reclusive tendencies show introversion. Likewise, his politeness, sensitivity, and desire to help others too much show high Fe. When asked, Mips was happy to share a long list of people he loves and the whole thing is adorably cheesy, showing his eagerness to openly discuss feelings. For Mips and many other Si-users, security entails comfort and vice versa: one of the reasons he loves Larice is that the Starman "makes me feel like I have a solid foundation to stand on" (compare Ambrosios). Conversely, he is known as a "scaredy mook" who struggles with paranoia and distrusting others due to inferior Ne. The inferior function is usually not trusted, and Ne holds many possibilities at once, so Mips fears the possibilities he sees.

Speaking of Mips the "scaredy mook," this actually happened (as of 2018-06-11):

I think that speaks for itself.

Nik: Probably ESFJ, maybe ENFP.

This "very up-beat and chatty" mook is "[p]retty social and ready to talk," showing extraversion and a high Feeling function. Love is "really important and not somethin' to give up on" to Nik, showing the sappy emotional idealism of Fe-dominance. His "bad habits" include "[b]eing too stuck in his ways" and "not hearing new points of view." Similarly, his "pet peeves" include "[h]aving his beliefs challenged." Both show the stubbornness of an immature high-Si-user, unwilling to consider alternative possibilities through Ne. Nik's "personal problem" of "not wanting to give up on the past" also shows high Si, since Si often focuses on the past. While Nik has a "chaotic good" alignment and is a "ditz," which would cohere better with an ENFP typing than ESFJ, typing based on alignments is often unreliable. Plus, it is far easier to imagine a ditzy ESFJ than an ideologically stubborn ENFP stuck in their ways who refuses to give up on the past.

Nila: Almost certainly ISTP.

"The goddamn doctor around here" is a grumpalumpagus like Malik — reclusive, practical, and tough, among other ISTP qualities. She has no patience, is best represented by the deadly sin of Sloth, and has personal problems with "being too apathetic at times" and consequently lacking motivation. In other words, she is almost certainly not a Si- or Te-dominant. Her tone with others tends to be very blunt and gruff, making her "not all that pleasant to deal with," and she dislikes impractical socialization. All of those show inferior Fe. After healing Ambrosios, for example, she told him to "git, get up, you're fine now ... 'n learn to use your healin' and life-up PSI, you're a mook, dammit." When Iso asked to become her apprentice, Nila asked the butterfly to "Tell me why this won’t be a waste of my time," and Nila has (endearingly, I think hope) referred to Saral the ISFJ as a "nice and borin'" "idiot" and a "git." Insensitive apathy implies high Ti, and her down-to-earth straightforwardness implies that she is not an INTP.

Behind her demeanor, though, Nila seems to be unusually driven by Fe. Her inferior Fe motivates her career as a healer. Apparently she even gives others therapy to help heal minds as well as bodies. She makes a nice contrast with Iso the ENFJ, and each helps the other with their weaknesses: unlike Nila, Iso is uncomfortable dealing with gore, but on the other hand, Iso has used her social skills to help compensate for Nila's lack thereof.

Origanum Vulgare ("Ore"): Almost certainly ISTJ.

Ore is a HUGE nerd and somewhat of an ISTJ stereotype, although a different kind than Alum. Emotional expression, or emotional anything, is not his strong suit. Friendship is a foreign concept to Ore. Due to his dominant Si, Ore has been highly obedient since his childhood. He obsesses over the details and minutia of his special interest — plants — to the exclusion of everything else, storing it all in memory. As Euclid eloquently put it, flowers "are one of his reasons for being." Intensive memory for concrete details is a hallmark of high Si. Not only does he consider endlessly studying mooks fun, but he considers it "illogical" to receive appreciation when he has yet to publish his research findings. Regarding mooks, academic study is even how he expresses romantic feelings unless that Elmadan x Ore fic is non-canon, in which case lol whoops.

I also consider INTP a serious possibility due to his occasional problem of forgetting that the outside world exists. However, an INTP typing cannot explain his obedience ("It's like he can do no wrong or something"), his intensive focus on one concrete subject, his "addiction [to] work," or his diametric contrast with Ano — and with Static, for that matter. He may show the "absentminded professor" stereotype common to INTPs, but he is not the same type as Origen.

Origen: Definitely INTP.

Pelly: Almost certainly ESFJ.

This happy gieeg's expressive optimism, desire to help others, high patience level, and Lawful Good alignment exemplify dominant Fe. Her unwavering loyalty to her friends, family, and superiors shows strong Si. She felt angriest when people try to bully her brother or Alum, and hates bullies in general, which shows Fe's desire to protect others and Si's family loyalty. One might expect her protective instincts to impede her profession as a soldier, but she copes by reminding herself that she does everything to help her loved ones and "[tries] to keep my morals, even on the battlefield." After all, she believes that "[y]ou can kill without being a bully." If not for that belief, the cognitive dissonance between her moral feelings and her duty as a soldier would probably tear her apart.

Pia: Definitely ISFJ.

Pia's absolute loyalty and obedience to the orders of his "master(s)," to the extent that he is very frequently called a loyal dog as a joke, display dominant Si. When told that extreme obedience might cause his death, he said, "That's...ok." Like Pelly's, his unwaveringly compassionate and protective behavior — especially towards children — shows high Fe. The contrast between Pia's Fe and Giegue's Te is evident in that Pia thinks they are friends but Giegue does not (but for the record, Pia is probably right). Pia's inability to understand metaphors, puns, colloquialisms, or abstractions in general shows inferior Ne combined with low intelligence. A less intelligent person with high Ne may understand abstraction but not understand reality (contrast Patrick Star the INTP). Pia is a stereotypical ISFJ in almost every way, except that he is not (usually, with exceptions) visibly nervous (at least compared to e.g. Mips).

Pimpinella Anisum ("Ano"): Definitely ENTP.

Rigby: Probably ESTP.

This shady character “has the kind of voice you instinctively don't want to trust,” perhaps because he exudes sketchiness and is the kind of salesman who is a bit too eager. The contrast between outer friendliness and salesmanlike insincerity is especially common among E_TPs, who use their Fe to project a friendly demeanor despite that it rarely gives them altruistic motivations (compare Ariana). Rigby’s technical skills (”He's actually really good with gadgets and inventing”) and love of “tinkering” show that he loves working with concrete yet logical systems due to Ti (compare Ayjo and Malik). Specifically, he loves “making explosives” since Se’s craving for sensory intensity makes him viscerally love fire (compare Bala and Zicca).

Like many STPs and few SJs, he “dislikes ... the law” because it imposes seemingly arbitrary rules on his freedom, making him willing to conduct (despite his insistence otherwise) legally dubious sales. Similarly, he would probably rather not “get married, ... have kids, [or] raise a family.” The aversion to commitment shows low Feeling and no Si. Rigby even shows the characteristic crude and slang-filled Se-dominant speaking style (compare Boson and Juice). While it may be dangerous to assume that only Se-dominants use it, so far that heuristic has seemed fairly reliable.

Saral: Definitely ISFJ.

Sprita ("Spooks"): Definitely ENFP.

Above all, Spooks is "excitable and cheerful!" This "Wide-eyed Idealist" with a "Sunny sunflower disposition" has a "bright and bubbly" voice, and the element which best represents her is "sunshine." Her excessively friendly demeanor shows extraversion and Feeling, while her playful spontaneity points to Ne or Se dominance. Her romanticism suggests _NF_. When asked about how to biologically classify mooks, she replied, "I like thinkin[g that] we're like works of art, beautiful and unique!" which is one of the most violently ENFP sentences that I have ever read. It upheld romantic, happy idealism while notably providing zero concrete scientific details. Spooks is also known as "the Supreme Ribbon Noodle" because she wears cute ribbons and gives others cute ribbons and is a cute ribbon. She constantly calls stuff "cute," but maybe she is merely projecting. After all, she is "very determined" to be adorable, and her determination is obviously paying off (EEEEEEE, she’s so cute!). Like certain other ENFPs that I could mention, Spooks is a Motor Mouth who excitedly "goes on and on" and doesn't shut up while talking —especially about feelings, since she "is here to talk about feelings." Unlike Beams, Spooks fully embraces that she is Delightfully Squooshy. Spooks is basically the same as ViHart, another ENFP.

Tonic: Probably INFJ, maybe ISFJ.

This small friend "is mild-mannered, but determined," and a "bit withdrawn around strangers, but she warms up to others after a bit." Like Yi, the contrast between her warmth and her reclusive shyness shows introversion and auxiliary Fe. A mild-mannered attitude generally indicates I_F_, as does a "[s]oft and sweet" voice. " "She stays as positive as she can," showing the optimism of high Fe. The idea of killing someone repulses her, even Elmadan when he shut down Bowfest. Ni-dominance makes her "seem very reliable" and “determined” with a "[h]igh" patience level. Yet Ni also gives her the "personal problem" that she "isn't outgoing and doesn't know how to reach out and get what she wants on her own." Ni generally takes things slowly, avoiding impulsive action. Fe prefers to act polite instead of blunt to maintain social harmony. Both make it difficult to act assertively and take social risks. When nervous, she "pretend[s] she isn't in the ship and just go[es] quiet," since as an introvert she generally feels more comfortable out of the spotlight. Then, she lets her extravert brother do the talking — although she sometimes discourages that when the conversation enters, ah, unwholesome territory. When talking to Iso, Tonic is very flattering and encouraging, almost like a tonic to the nerves — GEDDIT???

ISFJ is also a possibility, since Si could also explain her shyness and determination. However, she shows no signs of low Ne's nervousness (contrast her brother, as well as Flux and Mips). I though INFJ unlikely because she lacks some grand vision, but when Elmadan cancelled Bowfest, she decided to lead the resistance. It may not be as obvious or overarching as e.g. Harod's or Penini's dream to explore the stars, but still shows a strong-willed resistance to existing authority which is less likely in a Si-dominant.

Yi: Probably ISFJ, maybe INFJ.

Very polite, well-meaning, and cultured, Yi exemplifies the well-developed tact of auxiliary Fe. Despite his genuine friendliness — in that he likes hugs and "gets along well with most everyone" — he is "just not a terribly social person," showing the paradoxical combination of high Fe warmth and introverted reclusiveness. Politeness is so second nature to him that he even let enemies rest at a hotel before fighting them.

For a long time I considered Yi an INFJ, reasoning first that Ni-dominance explains his fascination with Earth culture and second that inferior Se explains his detachment from physical reality and indecisiveness. Strong Se-users are generally much more aware and decisive (contrast Yi with Ly, Zarbol, or Zicca), after all. However, Yi's detachment and indecisiveness can be explained reasonably well with an ISFJ typing too. Yi's main interest (guns) is more detail-oriented than I would usually expect from an INFJ, although Harod's gembloom interest is notably similar. Si explains other parts of his personality slightly better than Ni as well, e.g. that his “hobbies” include “[o]rganizing things.” Also, while INFJs and ISFJs both care for others, Yi tries to attend to Zannie’s immediate practical needs, which NFJs (like Zannie) often accidentally ignore.

My most significant reasons to call Yi an ISFJ instead of INFJ are his lack of righteous indignation (e.g. at the gieegs' regime) and his lack of a lofty idealized vision or dream (contrast Harod, Istic, and Penini). If I saw his righteous indignation or lofty vision, then I would consider INFJ probable, but he gets up early and "appreciates getting a good night's sleep" and i can't relate so therefore he can't be my type. /jk

Alright, that was my first Finalysis post! :D I hope that y’all enjoyed it. The charts are far messier than I intended, but I figured that they looked better that way than if I had tried to stuff six ESFJs into a single box on a traditional MBTI chart while leaving three boxes empty. The Heir of Lingaraj Book Store

Rakesh Nayak joined our class in grade 5. His transfer to our class was a result of language choices all of us had to make early on in our lives. Each one of us had to give in writing to the school the language we wanted to study from among Odia and Sanskrit. I couldn’t understand why we had to make a choice and couldn’t study both. So a few kids were transferred to our class, an Odia section, Rakesh one of them. A scrawny kid having a bony face with an aquiline nose, a protruding Adam’s apple, and mischievous eyes is how I remember him.

We hardly interacted with each other till probably the last 2 years of school. Our early interactions were limited to shouting to each other asking for a pass when we were on the same football team and glaring at and pushing each other when we were on opposite sides. He was surprisingly strong and immovable for a wiry kid. He was given the nickname Dhedi Nayak, dhedi is an Odia slang for lean. Though he wasn’t tall, he used to sit in one of the last rows in the class where the taller kids sat. The occupants of these rows invariably didn’t perform well in exams. I am not sure if they sat there because they weren’t good at studies or if they weren’t good at studies because they sat there. I can’t quite recall if they sat there of their own accord or were made to sit there. I don’t remember a lot of things from back then but I remember learning 2 things about Rakesh a few years after he moved to our class. One, he played table tennis and was apparently quite good at it. Other students used to talk about his matches and wins or losses from time to time. I came to know that he used to go for practice on all days after school and over weekends. I don’t know where he practiced or who he was coached by. In retrospect, I think I was a rather incurious kid who didn’t bother to find out about things that didn’t concern him, especially about his friends or classmates - a trait I’ve regrettably carried to this day. The other thing I learnt about him was that his father owned the Lingaraj Book Store, a rather famous schoolbooks store in the vicinity of our school. You could get schoolbooks in Lingaraj Book Store that were unavailable elsewhere. As smaller kids, we used to go there with Mom to buy Diamond comics. It was a small store but was located at a busy crossroads in the city that was frequented by schoolkids and their parents along with daily laborers, office goers, college kids, railway employees, rickshawpullers, and riff-raff. Part of the crowd in that area was also due to Tip-Top Saloon, a hair salon for men with an old white-haired proprietor and the Kalpana Talkies theatre, a shady establishment that screened soft-porn and B-grade movies.

It was probably in grade 9 that Rakesh made attempts at getting better in class. Like a few others, he had probably realized that board exams were less than a couple of years away and that it was time to break away from the general mediocrity that afflicted the back-benchers and initiate the process of moving up in life by being serious about studies and securing good marks in the 10th board. We were all told by everyone around us that getting good marks in the board exams was our ticket out of the school, the small city, and the dreary working life of the lower middle-class in general. It didn’t help that most of us weren’t particularly interested in getting out at all. We didn’t see the school, the city, or being a part of the working lower middle-class section of our society as things that we needed to escape from. But we didn’t have the temerity to say that aloud and tried, or pretended to try, to take our studies seriously in the last 2 years of school. Meanwhile, having experienced a spurt of sudden growth, I had been moved to the second-last bench myself and found Rakesh sitting right behind me in class. It was then that our interactions increased.

I wasn’t a particularly bright student but Rakesh was somehow determined to take advantage of our physical proximity and consequently, used to borrow my note books. We used to exchange notes, share class and home work, and gossip about this and that in general. His grades improved slightly over the months just as the defects in my football skills became more pronounced. He invited me a few times to his home, an offer I haven’t taken up till date. He often used to visit our home, for notes, clarifying doubts, or just to kill time for a while. I became acutely aware of his athleticism and physique when once he changed clothes displaying a ripped body with an 8-pack abs with absolutely no fat on him at all. Regular exercise and table tennis practice had chiselled his body into perfection. I recall chuckling at his nonchalance when I drew attention to this and contrasted his attitude with some other classmates who didn’t have great physique but bragged nonetheless about visiting the gym daily. It was a big deal for a school kid in Bhubaneshwar to have gym membership and these mates of mine talked and acted like they were the descendants of Adonis himself.

I used to think that Rakesh was lucky to have a bookstore at his disposal, what with all the teachers asking us to buy multiple practice books and question banks in the 10th grade. For Rakesh it was an albatross around his neck though. Most teachers used to ridicule him on account of his average marks and often said he was undeserving of the study materials that he had access to. Many teachers also told the class that we must all study harder than Rakesh because he was the son of a flourishing businessman and his future was secure whereas we were the kids of lowly paid government employees. They conveniently used to forget that whereas Rakesh’s father had only a small bookstore there were others whose fathers had bigger businesses, were powerful bureaucrats, or were influential in the corridors of power. The heir of Lingaraj book store, he was christened. The same teachers shamelessly used to ask Rakesh to get materials for them or used to visit the bookstore directly and appropriate stationery and question banks without payment. Rakesh never talked about any of this, but it was there for all to see. If he felt bad when he was mocked in the classroom he never displayed any emotion to betray his feelings. He was as cheerful and enthusiastic as they come. I have only a few fading memories of our chats in the classroom. If I was in trouble then he figuratively had my back, sitting right behind me.

After the board exams we went to different colleges and lost touch. Occasionally I used to pass by his bookstore and he used to wave at me from his seat at the counter, always excited to see an old friend, always smiling. After moving to a different city for work, I used to look for him while passing by his store on my visits home. I never saw him there. A couple of times I saw his father but never cared to go inside the store and strike a conversation or ask about Rakesh. One day, I got a friend request from him on Facebook. He sent a flurry of messages asking about my whereabouts and well being. The same gushing warmth and unfailing enthusiasm as the kid who I had befriended in school. I distinctly remember that I was busy with work during that time and neither reciprocated his enthusiasm nor responded properly to him. I made a note to myself to get back to him but never did. Soon thereafter, I quit Facebook and lost all contact with Rakesh. On subsequent visits home, I rarely passed by his bookstore. The few times I did, I didn’t see him or his father. Either the bookstore was shut or new employees were at the counter. I didn’t pay much attention to this as I had taken it for granted that whenever I wanted to revive my connection with Rakesh, I just had to enter the bookstore and ask for him.

Last year a school friend informed me that Rakesh had passed away. He didn’t know when or where or how but he confirmed that he had checked his Facebook account and had seen RIP messages all over his wall. It came as a shock. A few months earlier we had lost another school friend Sidhanta to cancer and it was difficult to believe that Rakesh too had departed now. On asking around I discovered that most of our classmates were either unaware of his demise or had no information about how it came to transpire. Earlier this month on our visit home, I went to Lingaraj Book Store, 21 years after passing out from school. The big neon signboard at the entrance proclaiming the shop to be the sole dealer for specific question banks and all CBSE and ICSE books had been replaced by a small glow signboard that just said Lingaraj Variety Store. The shelves held grocery items along with stationery and note books. The imposing counter was missing and a rickety partition acted as the barrier between the shopkeeper and the customer. A young man was sitting on a stool at the head of this partition. I thought his face resembled Rakesh’s. I didn’t even know if and how many siblings he had. The young man was Rakesh’s younger brother.

He confirmed that Rakesh had passed away in 2018, a year after the death of their father. He said something about him hitting his head at home after a fall in a drunken state and breathing his last at a small private hospital. It seems that Lingaraj book store had fallen on hard times and the last few years had been terrible for business. With online retailers and other new-age competitors aggressively snatching their clientele, Rakesh’s father had bet big on exclusively publishing question banks for board and competitive exams to revive their business. But the exam patterns themselves had changed and anyways umpteen question banks were available online for free. The investment fell flat and the business never revived after that. The huge financial loss they incurred took a toll on the family. Their father lost interest in the business and became erratic at managing the store. Being the eldest son, it fell on Rakesh’s shoulders to manage both the family and the business. Though his heart wasn’t in it, he sat reluctantly at the store. Meanwhile, constant drinking damaged his father’s physical and mental health. The severity of the loss ate him away from inside. The atmosphere at home became corrosive and there were regular fights and arguments. Their father died a bitter man, heartbroken till the end. Their father’s death hastened Rakesh’s dive into an abyss of drinking problems and bad habits. His liver was damaged due to heavy drinking and he suffered a serious bout of jaundice for which he was hospitalized for a prolonged period. After that he developed high blood pressure and had to be hospitalized again. The business was as good as dead. After getting home from the hospital, he continued drinking and his health deteriorated steadily. One night, he got up from bed to fetch himself a glass of water, lost balance, and hit his head resulting in heavy blood loss. He was rushed to a hospital and put on ventilator. He died within 4 hours of admission. His brother paused for a long time after the narration.

I bid goodbye and left the store hastily. I went to a wedding from there and didn’t really ponder over what I felt after hearing about the manner of Rakesh’s demise. It was only the next day when I had some time to myself that I realized Rakesh had died a needlessly early death like countless others in a dimly lit hospital ward in utter anonymity. If his father or he had received economic assistance in time, or if only he had someone to talk to about his troubles before irreversible despair set in, perhaps he wouldn’t have spiralled into self-destruction. If only his friends were there for him, he would be alive. I kicked myself for not returning his messages on Facebook and not walking up to him when he used to wave at me from their store. The loss of a friend is not only a reminder of one’s own mortality but also a reflection of the friendship you shared. If you aren’t there by your friends’ side when they need it the most, then it speaks more about you than your friend or their situation. I realize as I type that in a typical defensive and self-righteous manner, I have turned this into a piece that’s more about myself than Rakesh. I’ll probably forget Rakesh’s misery in a few days and return to living my life. His family will also eventually come to grips with their loss, but the anguish that a life could have been saved will forever gnaw at our hearts. Who’s going to tell the others now that the heir of Lingaraj Book Store is no more?

Book Review: A Memoir to Cherish

It’s a daughter’s ode to her father. It preserves memories of a bygone era. It captures the mundane life in all its ordinariness. It’s a time travel with a paterfamilias who lived for ninety years. It’s a tale of exuberant and spirited youth transforming into a weighted maturity of a family man, living a life by keeping accounts of the nation and self, and then excruciatingly withering away little by little, as the daughter watches her father sliding into an irreversible decline, and finally seeking a resting place up above.

Daddykins: A Memoir of My Father and I by Kalpana Mohan is a thoughtful read, delightful in the felicity of language where the verbs, nouns and adjectives snugly fall into place. It’s quite an artful portrayal of life, enriched by the language in which it is told. Though the life of her father was nothing extraordinary, by Kalpana’s own admission, the reading is quite an experience of a text that keeps you drawn in – just for the way it is written. T. Nagar’s evolution through the years where her father first bought a bungalow and then a flat and the parts of Kerala where her father belonged and got married are depicted in the background, coursing us through history as these places changed in time.

As the chronicler of Madras, S. Muthiah, would say often everyone needs to tell their story. Kalpana tells her father’s story, in the process capturing the societal hues and social mores of the times that he lived through. The luxury of those times seems to have been lost on us for ever. Kalpana keeps a thin line separating her father as an emotional and affectionate part of her life and as the subject whose life is being recorded. It’s delicate but in seeing her father as a subject, she portrays a third eye view of Daddykins with some unadulterated wit and charm. The book is not just full of admiration for a man who kept accounts of every penny spent every day and as someone who was looked up to by the entire family, but it also registers some of his failings as a human. It would be unfair to pass judgement on the book because it has to be taken as the life story is told.

Daddykins lends himself to be captured in a lighter essence, his personality defined by a great sense of humor. Remarkable is the way in which he gets over his mouth getting pulled to its left because of a stroke with a bag of tricks. Remarkable is the way in which he gives into this first daughter who falls in love with Thalaivar. Remarkable is the way in which he finds a groom for the author, the tenth man to be seen for a match.

The one constant in the book is Man Friday and valet of Daddykins, Vinayagam, who becomes an inseparable part of the family’s being as Daddykins is pushed into a lonely life after Kalpana’s mother is lost to cancer. She was an ordinary woman, given away in marriage when she was just fourteen. She would sound familiar to any daughter from those times. She designs her life to be full of earnestness to make the best out of the circumstances. Her yearnings for small things that fills her almirah in effect captures the spirit of her circumscribed world. But she was a woman who understood people and life more than a university education would have helped her. She navigated her life holding up and mastering the household effectively, at times throwing a complaint or two about Daddykins, who measured every penny spent. But I felt her story should have been told a bit more. I felt inadequate of her not shown much light. After all, it is the mothers who shape our lives quietly and they don’t expect credit for their sacrifices, but they are not given the heft that fathers enjoy.

After reading the book, I felt two people made a difference to Daddykin’s life. Thalaivar, the son-in-law, whom Daddykins was not initially in favour of getting his daughter, Urmila, married to. But, he preserved Daddykins in an extraordinary way in his twilight years. He kept him going with verve by giving him an office after retirement, by taking care of his needs and just by caring a little more. It seemed so appropriate that Daddykins wanted the pyre to be lit by him.

Vinayagam is a character that Kalpana first introduced in her Facebook updates on her father as an argumentative youth, full of opinions, sometimes unsettling, somethings infectiously funny, sometimes strongly in disagreement. The Man Friday of Daddykins filled in the void of his two daughters, settled away in foreign lands. It’s an example of a bondage beyond blood. It’s difficult to make out if Vinayagam’s life was shaped by Daddykins or if Vinayagam defined Daddykin’s final years. It’s a great tribute to Vinayagam that Kalpana has paid by making him an integral part of the narrative.

Kalpana keeps the narrative straight by not bringing in much of what her father meant to his sisters, called Three Roses, and not making it too much of a swansong. They come and go in the measure needed but essentially you get to know what they meant to Daddykins. In a fine balance, she also captures how the two daughters – she and her sister Urmila – cared for Daddykins as the process of decline set in. In a great understatement, Kalpana doesn’t glorify what Daddykins meant to her husband Mohan or his family. She told the book reading session that her father-in-law told her as he stepped out their T. Nagar home after the passing away of Daddykins, “He was a gentleman.”

Where much of the life of fathers goes unsung or gets lost to time, Kalpana Mohan has preserved her father’s soul for ever by capturing his life in a book. More than to us, the family members would find it a treasure to cherish for their life. What would have gone untold and unheard is now firmly etched in print and digital (nay, not in stone). The book would have been helped by a couple of pages of photographs of Daddykins and his times.

California auto insurance rates going/gone up?!!!?

I'm turning 25 this month and called because i wanted to get a new (hopefully lower) rate for being that age and not having any tickets or violations. Then they go and quote me something HIGHER than what I'm paying! I asked why and that's what the told me. That the state of California has been hit with higher rates. ~WHY? ~When did this happen? ~Why has no one talked about this? ~Am I the only one being affected? ~Is there anything I can do to lower my rate? ~So being 25 and having no tickets or violations is now pointless when it comes to car insurance??

Hello, So when I'm watching MTV or whatever television program here in the Netherlands I'm noticing that so many 16 year old drive a car. But where do you guys get the money from? Because a really crappy cheap car cost about 1000 euro's and than you need to pay a 390 euro (507 dollars) a month. I'm 16 too and with my 40 hours of work in a month I make 200 euro (260 dollars), so I can't afford a car now. Can't afford Health Insurance...?

I'm looking for advice...and hopefully someone to tell me that I'm not screwed. My boss graciously offered to find group insurance for all of her employees and she is willing to pay 50% of the premiums. The problem is that she went with the most expensive plan on the market (that I've seen) and I simply can't afford it. The premium is $340 a month, so I'd be paying $170 which isn't bad...but the copays are at least +20% on everything and doctor visits range from $35 to $55 a visit, so I wouldn't be able to afford to use my health coverage often. It also doesn't include dental, which is what I really wanted/needed. I am 21 years old (and all of my coworkers are in their 20s), so I don't really understand why the payments are so high. I was going to use my income tax return as a down payment on a car, but if I opt out of healthcare this year at least a fourth of that return will be taken as the fine imposed to coerce people to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. Married to both the arc-lights and a megastar in the same year she chose to give up one for the other. But Dimple Khanna soon grew up to some sinister home truths. That year – 1973!

Amidst a line-up of a hundred young girls, Raj Kapoor singled out the older daughter of Gujarati entrepreneur Chunilal Kapadia and Betty to be launched opposite his son Rishi Kapoor in Bobby (1973). In fact, her introduction scene in the film was inspired from Raj’s first meeting with muse Nargis decades ago… where an unsuspecting Nargis had opened the door to Raj… running her flour smeared hands through her hair!

But before Bobby could win over the audiences, superstar Rajesh Khanna wooed a 15-year-old Dimple to be his child bride in March ’73. While this unexpected twist left his thousand female fans shattered – some even committed suicide – it was a fairytale wedding for Dimple. For someone, who often strolled past the superstar’s sea-facing bungalow Aashirwad in Bandra to someday walk in as the empress of his castle was a surreal moment. “I came to know him precisely seven days before the marriage. We were together in a flight to Ahmedabad for a show. He sat next to me but did not utter a word. Just as the flight was about to land, he turned towards me, looked hard into my eyes and said he wanted me to marry him,” Dimple once recalled the whirlwind romance. She was 16 to his 31.

Blockbuster Bobby

Six months after her marriage, released RK’s love tale Bobby. “Mujhse dosti karoge?” asks Bobby Braganza in the iconic scene. A cleft on her cherubic face, sherry eyes, a natural naiveté and loads of untouched sexiness… Dimple became a teen icon. She helmed the Bobby cult – the dotted and knotted Bobby blouse and the earphone-hairstyle, the Bobby clips, Bobby sandals… were feverishly followed. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (along with Jaya Bhaduri for Abhimaan). But that was the magnificent anti-climax of her nipped-in-the-bud career. The mehndi on her hands, visible in the last portions of Bobby, was a grim reminder that she was now Kaka’s possession.

The rocky marriage

One can never fathom the reasons behind Rajesh’s impulsive decision to marry Dimple. Some dubbed it as ‘attention seeking’, some called it an ‘ego boost’ for the superstar, who wanted to spite his ex-ladylove, actor/model Anju Mahendroo. But sadly, by the end of 1974 when their first daughter Twinkle Khanna was born (she shares the same birthdate, December 29, with her late father) the cracks in the marriage were evident. Rajesh’s slipping stardom and his alleged alcoholism and abusive ways left his adolescent wife traumatised. Still in her early 20s, in 1982, Dimple, reportedly, moved into her parents’ home with daughters, Twinkle and Rinkie, aged eight and five then. She began working with Ramesh Sippy for her comeback film Saagar. “Right from the beginning of my marriage I knew it wouldn’t work out. My biggest failing is I don’t take a stand. I let people stomp all over me. Finally, when I do put my foot down, it’s too late,” she had told Filmfare in July 1983.

The eventuful ‘80s

Though Saagar was to be her comeback, Dasari Narayana Rao’s Zakhmi Sher (1984), opposite Jeetendra released first. Saagar premiered in August 1985 and was controversial for the scene where she was seen topless for a split second. Her easy performance as Mona D’Silva, torn between her friend (Kamal Haasan) and beloved (Rishi Kapoor), won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. “Certainly, marriage brings security… I was Mrs Rajesh Khanna. It takes guts to leave all that. But now that I’m earning and fending for myself, I feel more secure. There’s a hell of a difference in spending your time playing cards and acting,” she said to Filmfare in October 1984.

Mukul Anand’s Aitbaar (1985), a Hitchcockian thriller (apparently based on Dial M For Murder) with Suresh Oberoi and Raj Babbar, had her play the beautiful wife of a sadistic husband. The film had soulful music by Bappi Lahiri. The songs Kisi nazar ko tera intezar aaj bhi hai and Awaaz di hai have great recall value.

Rahul Rawail’s actioner Arjun with Sunny Deol added to her reliability just as it sparked off rumours of a liaison between the lead pair. Feroz Khan’s stylised Janbaaz (1986) presented her in a sexy and glamorous avatar and is still remembered for her steamy lovemaking scene with Anil Kapoor in the barn. Dimple’s moment of epiphany came with Mahesh Bhatt’s Kaash (1987). The narrative that dealt with the decline of a superstar (Jackie Shroff) had perhaps a familiar echo for the actress, who was also evolving as a person. Her act of a disillusioned wife and a distraught mother had flashes of brilliance. In fact, Bhatt was then quoted saying, “I couldn’t differentiate between Dimple and Pooja her character… She has gone through so much in her life that… she only has to be herself.” Dimple and Jackie shared a great chemistry as their bond traversed through love, conflict, abuse and estrangement… only to come anew.

The dramatic, though coarse, Zakhmi Aurat (1988) had her play a police officer, who gets gang-raped. After the judicial system fails her, she joins forces with other rape victims to castrate the rapists. The film was a bold statement, hitherto unseen in our films. Another notable film was Mukul Anand’s Insaaf (1987). Her pairing with Vinod Khanna was a beauty meets brawn encounter with the song Sulagti hai aankhen… celebrating it to the hilt. Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan (1989) was another commercial success in her diary.

The offbeat ’90s

“When I do glamorous roles, people say I look haggard. Why can’t directors conceive me in a realistic set-up? Why can’t directors like Mahesh Bhatt and Shyam Benegal sign me?” asked Dimple in a Filmfare interview in September 1985. And the ’90s threw open the floodgates of arthouse cinema for her. Govind Nihalani’s Drishti (1990) had Shekhar Kapur and her as a married urban couple, trying to find meaning in a dithering marriage.

Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s short story, Gulzar’s Lekin (1990), set in Rajasthan, revolved around Vinod Khanna who’s entranced by Reva (Dimple), a spirit. Apparently, to make her character truthful, director Gulzar asked her to refrain from blinking and give a ‘fixed gaze’ for a surreal effect. Another milestone was Kalpana Lajmi’s Rudaali (1993). Also set in Rajasthan, the film was based on Mahasweta Devi’s story about professional mourners. Dimple played Shanichari, a woman who has never cried despite a sad life but is compelled to weep for a living. It won her the National Award. “I was proud; I’d proved that an actress from mainstream cinema could win an award,” she told Filmfare in October 1993.

Mrinal Sen’s 1995 Bengali drama Antareen had her play a woman in a loveless marriage. In Mehul Kumar’s Krantiveer (opposite Nana Patekar), she played a journalist, who becomes a rape victim and received her fourth Filmfare Award as the Best Supporting Actress. Other notable films were Shashilal K Nair’s Angaar (1992), where she played an orphan and Priyadarshan’s Gardish (1993), where she played a prostitute.

The magical millennium

Not averse to playing her age, the 2000s had her dabble with an array of characters. They include Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai (2001), where she played Tara Jaiswal, a middle-aged alcoholic divorcee. Her amorphous relationship with much younger artist Siddharth (Khanna) here was a poignant portrayal. Leela (20012), directed by Somnath Sen and co-starring Vinod Khanna, followed her unconventional relationship with a student. The year 2005 saw her unite with Rishi Kapoor in Pyaar Mein Twist. They played two middle-aged single parents, who fall in love. Her part of ex-superstar Neena Walia in Luck by Chance (2009), referred to in the film as ‘a crocodile in a chiffon saree’ was applauded. In 2006, she co-starred with Saif Ali Khan and Naseeruddin Shah in Being Cyrus (2006), directed by Homi Adajania. She essayed Katy, Shah’s neurotic wife, who has an affair with a younger Cyrus. Cocktail (2012) and Finding Fanny (2014) tapped her reserves of fun even as they completed her trinity with Adajania.

The golden years

Through time, her equation with estranged husband Rajesh went through an overhaul. The two, somehow, never divorced and the initial resentment gave way to a newfound mutual respect. This was more than evident, when he was detected with cancer. The family, along with son-in-law Akshay Kumar, rallied around Rajesh, stepping wholeheartedly into Aashirwad once again, giving him the support and care that perhaps only a family could shower. When he passed away on July 18, 2012, he was given a farewell, which was a reminder of the phenomenon he once was.

Today, Dimple seems to be in a peaceful phase. “Rinkie is my child and Twinkle is my mother. Twinkle looks after us all. She tries to make my life as comfortable as possible,” she one shared with Filmfare. Fond of painting and surfing the internet, she’s enjoying the mellow moments that life has thrown her way. “There has been a lot of pain in my life but I don’t find myself going into that area…This could be wrong because people say it’s cathartic to go through the process. I’m scared of losing myself even for a few minutes. It’s too painful. I don’t know whether that’s going to work for me or hit me all at once. But so far life has been kind,” she had once shared with Filmfare. A deep thought indeed!
