Portrait Research
Jimmy Nelson was born in Kent in 1967. Jimmy is best known for his portraits of tribal and indigenous peoples. At the age of 19 he traveled to Tibet taking with a camera in which he took images of his journey. On his return he began working as a professional photojournalist (http://en.Wikipedia.org). in 1992, jimmy was commissioned to produce a book Literary Portraits of China, he remained in China for 3 years. In 2009 Jimmy Nelson began his project Before They Pass Away, this explored; photographed more than 35 indigenous tribes all over the world including Europe, Asia, South Pacific and South America. This took 3 years to complete.
The camera that Nelson used was a 4x5 inch camera (http://en.Wikipedia.org). Nelsons primary goal was to capture the people and cultures around the world that are at risk of being extinct for a variety of anthropological reasons (http://www.phototraces.com).
Some of the many tribes that Jimmy Nelson photographed were the Huli and Kalam tribes of New Guinea, the Tsaatan of Monogolia and the Mursi people of the Omo river valley in southern Ethiopia (http://en.Wikipedia.org). Nelsons key aim was to catch the vulnerable moments of the subjects. By doing this an extra dimension is brought about. In this image the main theme is that of protection; the 2 boys are hiding behind the adult and the adult is hiding behind the gun. this image is quite sad, in that these two young children, at such a young age may have to learn to use a gun to help their tribe keep their cultural heritage.
For jimmy Nelson to achieve such shots, a great degree of trust would have to be reached between both parties. Much of Nelson shots would have been done with natural light in the natural environment. I am drawn to this image, well because you cant help but be drawn to it. The composition is clever, the face in the centre, the clothing is the frame.
The image here are that of The Korowai of Papua Indonesia. This tribe believed that, up until the 1970s, they were they only humans on the planet (https://www.elitereaders.com). imagine the surprise when Jimmy Nelson arrives from another culture/country wishing to take photographs. This would have been a careful process in order to allow for trust and for the tribe to feel safe.
I like Nelson’s work because he is opening our eyes to important culture on our planet that are about to be lost. they are having to change their way of life, that has worked for them all because of mans greed. Not only is their population being at real risk of disappearing but so is the environment they are living in and also trying to save.
