Bypoll results 2018: Kairana has a loud message for Modi-Shah before 2019
The Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll result has yet again underlined the challenge that Narendra Modi-Amit Shah combine is set to face in 2019 against a united Opposition. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) loss here is seen as yet another dent in the invincibility cloak of Prime Minister Modi and party chief Shah.
With the BJP likely to struggle a repeat of its 2014 performance in much of northern India, the Kairana loss puts into sharper focus Shah’s efforts at expanding the party in areas beyond the Vindhyas and Chota Nagpur plateau, and make inroads in the Coromandel coast states.
In 2019, the BJP needs to win in the northeastern states, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to offset its foreseeable losses in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, etc.
The BJP’s Kairana loss comes on the heels of its losses in recent Lok Sabha by-polls in Phulpur and Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Ajmer and Alwar in Rajasthan.
While the BJP emerged the single largest party in Karnataka, its failure to form the government jolted the confidence that its supporters had in Shah’s abilities as a ‘master strategist’. These are not good signs as Modi and Shah prepare for 2019, and the government has its work cut out for the remainder of its term.

Bypoll Results 2018: BJP loses prestige battle in Kairana to united Opposition
The arithmetic of a united Opposition pooling votes trumped the BJP’s hopes of repeating the chemistry that the Narendra Modi-led party rode on to win the 2014 LS polls.
Bypoll Results 2018 : The results of four Lok Sabha and 10 assembly by-polls, announced on Thursday reinforced the idea of a united Opposition that parties have been working on to fight the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, and sent Bharatiya Janata Party strategists back to the drawing board. The BJP and its allies could win three of the 14 seats.
The trend, apparent in the results of Uttar Pradesh’s Phulpur and Gorakphpur Lok Sabha by-polls in March, was reinforced by Thursday’s results, particularly in the Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur Assembly seats of the state.
The arithmetic of a united Opposition pooling votes trumped the BJP’s hopes of repeating the chemistry that the Narendra Modi-led party rode on to win the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
Uttar Pradesh is crucial for the BJP in 2019. Its successive defeats in by-polls, barely a year after emphatically winning the Assembly polls, is likely to lead to questions being put to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Graph On the eve of the polling on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a well-publicised roadshow on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border and addressed a public rally in Baghpat, where he reached out to the region’s sugarcane farmers. The farmers are upset about not getting a suitable price for their produce. The Opposition had accused the Prime Minister of violating the spirit of the model code of conduct.
On Thursday, an upbeat Opposition insisted that the by-poll results reflected “widespread” anti-incumbency against the Modi government at the Centre, and states run by the BJP and its allies, including Jharkhand, Bihar, Maharashtra and Meghalaya.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra attributed the results to local issues and said the combination of Prime Minister Modi and party chief Amit Shah would help the BJP win the 2019 elections.
The results brought the BJP’s seats tally down to 272 in the Lok Sabha. The party is now on the brink of losing its majority status in the Lower House.
The results were a vindication for Yadav and second-generation dynasts who led their respective parties to victories in their home states. In the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency, Rashtriya Lok Dal’s Jayant Chaudhary led from the front to have his party’s Tabassum Hassan elected.
She was supported by the Congress, SP, BSP, Left parties and others. She also became the first Muslim from Uttar Pradesh to enter the current Lok Sabha.

Farmers stay put at NCR after Delhi rally blocked
NEW DELHI: Around 70,000 farmers participating in a Kisan Kranti Padyatra organised by Bhartiya Kisan Union were lathi-charged at the Delhi-UP border by the police who also fired teargas shells and water cannons against them on Gandhi Jayanti. The police action invited criticism from political parties and saw the BKU to stay put in the areas surrounding the capital. Though a meeting home minister Rajnath Singh and agriculture minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had with protestors had accepted seven out of 11 demands, the agitators refused to call of the stir.
The demands accepted were: Appeal against the National Green Tribunal order banning diesel vehicles that were more than a decade old, including farmers representative in CMs committee formed to discuss with Niti Aayog the proposal to incorporate agriculture under MGNREGA, raising before GST Council demand for having flat 5% tax on all farm equipment, increase in MSP for rabi crops and stopping import of crops grown in sufficient quantities. But the farmers remained dissatisfied as there was no assurance on Swaminathan formula for calculating MSP and demand for loan waiver, apart from the use of force by police and Shekhawat’s initial reaction that the protest was ‘motivated’.
Shekhawat will head a committee to deal with queries raised on the implementation of the PM Crop Insurance Scheme. The panel will give a report on the hurdles in implementing the scheme and the Kisan Credit Card. Amendment to the crop insurance scheme which includes damage to standing crops by wild animals will be implemented universally. The timing of the protests and the optics has BJP and the Centre worried. BJP governments in MP, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh which go to polls soon have also seen farmer unrest. The march was also despite a loan waiver promise by the BJP government in UP. Failure to pay sugarcane prices to farmers in the belt was one of the reasons for BJP’s loss in Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll recently.
“We reached agreements on some issues and they assured us that the agitation will be called off,” Shekhawat said. “The government said they will have to think about four demands in a further meeting as they involve financial matters… the government didn’t clear its stand on MSP. That is why farmers are unsatisfied. It didn’t clear its stand even on loan waiver. They said they will discuss it in detail,” Yudhvir Singh, BKU spokesperson said. BKU leader Rakesh Tikait condemned the police action. JDU has also criticised the use of force.

‘Very dangerous mistake to ignore us’: Congress on proposed Akhilesh-Mayawati alliance
LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and BSP chief Mayawati will announce today their alliance for the Lok Sabha polls, appearing set to keep the Congress out of the pact in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress described this likelihood as a "very dangerous mistake" and said it was ready to fight the parliamentary polls alone in the state. SP national secretary Rajendra Chaudhary and Bahujan Samaj Party national general secretary SC Misra on Friday sent out the invitation for a joint press conference at a hotel in Lucknow. Akhilesh Yadav confirmed in a television interview that the press conference is on the alliance in Uttar Pradesh, while parrying questions on seat-sharing with the Congress. At a meeting in Kannauj, he also said, "Our coming together has not only created fear in the BJP but also in the Congress." Smaller parties like the RLD and the Nishad Party are also likely to be part of the alliance, but were not mentioned in the announcement on the press conference. RLD's state unit president Masood Ahmed said that the party national vice president Jayant Chaudhary will be in the state capital Saturday and, if invited, could be a part of the joint press conference. His party chief Ajit Singh evaded questions from the media on the two seats expected to be set aside for the RLD, saying the discussions were in an early stage. In Delhi, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the objective of all opposition parties should be to defeat the ruling BJP and eliminate "autocracy, misgovernance" at the Centre. "We may have fallen on difficult times. But I think to ignore us can prove to be a very dangerous mistake," he said to the reporters when asked about the possible SP-BSP alliance. "Since everybody realises that, I think we will have a happy and harmonious solution sometime in the near future," he added. Uttar Pradesh Congress spokesperson Rajiv Bakshi said the party was ready to fight the coming elections alone in the state. "We alone have 45 seats in the Lok Sabha and it is any day many more than the regional players," he said. "A ‘mahagathbandhan' in the Lok Sabha elections needs to be built around the party having a national face," Bakshi said. The top leadership of the SP and the BSP recently met in Delhi to discuss the broad parameters of an alliance to take on the BJP in the parliamentary elections just months away. After the meeting, the SP said Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati had given their "in-principal approval". Sources said the SP and the BSP are planning to contest on 37 seats each out of the 80 on offer in Uttar Pradesh and plan to leave just two, Rae Bareli and Amethi, the bastions of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, for the Congress. Congress leaders like PL Punia, who delivered Chhattisgarh to the Congress as its state in-charge, and UPCC chief Raj Babbar are reportedly of the view that the party should seek its pound of flesh in any alliance. They cite the example of 2009 when the Congress romped home with 22 Lok Sabha seats in UP, surprising many. They also say that with party chief Rahul Gandhi getting more "combative" against the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress now stands a better chance than before. At a party convention in Delhi on Friday, BJP president Amit Shah mocked the "bua-bhatija" alliance of the parties led by Yadav and Mayawati. He said they could not stand each other but have now joined hands due to the fear of the BJP, echoing remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a recent rally in Agra. Shah claimed that the BJP is on its way to win more than 50 per cent votes in Uttar Pradesh, asserting the saffron alliance's tally will improve from the 73 Lok Sabha seats it won in 2014 out of the state's 80. Last year, Yadav and Mayawati decided to bury their differences to contest three bypolls. The joint opposition victories in the bypolls in Gorakhpur, Phulpur and Kairana was seen as a consolidation of Other Backward Classes, Dalits and Muslim votes, and raised expectations of a similar math working in the 2019 elections. In recent days, Yadav and Mayawati have put out press statements that mention a "gathbandhan". Mayawati's press statement was in solidarity with Yadav amid reports that the CBI might question him in connection with a mining scam that allegedly took place when he was chief minister. "Don't be shaken," she advised him. Yadav returned the favour when he put out a statement to condemn Modi's remarks in Agra on Mayawati "forgetting" an attack on her by SP workers in 1995. "The PM is scared of the alliance," Yadav said. Read the full article

Modi magic fading? United Opposition must not ignore BJP's 2 key advantages
A resurgent and united Opposition dealt another blow to the PM Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), defeating it in electorally-crucial Uttar Pradesh's Kairana and Noorpur bypolls, whose results were announced on Thursday. BJP's defeat in Kairana, in particular, was seen as a successful test case for Opposition unity ahead of the 2019 general elections. However, the Congress and other opposition parties must not ignore the advantages the saffron party still enjoys going into the Lok Sabha polls.
The BJP and its allies could only win three of the 14 seats up for grabs in the recent bypolls. Out of the four Lok Sabha seats in play, BJP won only in Maharashtra's Palghar, while the BJP-NDPP alliance won in Nagaland. The saffron party lost in Kairana and Maharashtra's Bhandara-Gondia. Among the Legislative Assembly seats that saw bypolls, the BJP only won in Uttarakhand's Tharali. The saffron party's ally, the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United), lost Bihar's Jokihat to the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
The BJP, for its part, has played down the outcome of the bypolls and asserted that the party will win the 2019 elections. The saffron party also has two key things going for it:
