#2370 - Dacrycarpus dacrydioides
- Kahikatea
A tree that was growing on the side road next to the Mill House. It happened to be festooned with an AMAZING display of Beard Lichen.
Anyway -
AKA White pine, katea, kaikatea, koroī, kōaka, kahika, and kāī (for the young tree). First described botanically by the French botanist Achille Richard in 1832 as Podocarpus dacrydioides. Dacrycarpus means 'tear shaped fruit', and dacrydioides refers to its similarity to the related podocarp Dacrydium.
Adult trees have dull green overlapping scale leaves while juvenile have needle-like leaves, often with a bronze hue.
New Zealand's tallest tree, up to 65m in height. Formerly dominant in damp fertile areas on both islands, where it grew in spectacular stands including in swamps. Unfortunately 'damp and fertile' is also prime dairy country, and the timber was used for Māori watercraft and tools, and by Europeans for wood pulp, barrels, and butterboxes, being white and odorless. Populations in most of the country have been decimated as a result.
In Māori mythology kahikatea is a child of Tāne, the god of forests and birds, and Hine-wao-riki, and was an important source of wood timber, tattoo dye, chewing gum, and berries for food. The Māori sometimes had to climb more than 30 m to reach the latter. A decoction or steam bath of the leaves was used as a cure for internal complaints.
A Kahikatea tree can produce 800kg of seed a year. The seeds have fleshy attachments called receptacles which encourage birds such as kererū and tūī to eat and disperse them. The trees also support a spectualar range of epiphytes - 100 different species have been recorded on a single tree.
Threats to the trees, beyond land-clearing and logging, include drought, invasive willows which occupy their preferred habitat after disturbance, and seed predation by introduced rats and mice. New Zealand had neither until the arrival of humans.
Pohokura, North Island, New Zealand

Mag keine Seelen. Der Bach bleibt verschwiegen von Kindheitsmärchen, Waldlaufen, Goldfinden, von Korn- und Sägemühlen, verschüttetem Taufwasser und Giardien. Die Sonne…

Mirkwood Terrain Inspo
For the wonderful @sotwk, thank you for your suggestions 💚
Again, I couldn't find photos from mostly New Zealand, but I am quite happy with the result! This is a much older, and mature forest, with a hint of darkness it didn't have before.

Twisted trunks by Craig Strahorn
Forest Reflection by Chloé Lam
River to Lake Town by Jeff Hitchcock
Mysterious Glen by Donald Gionnatti
Dried Stream by Mike Blank
Kahikatea Trees by Geoff McKay
Mossy branches by Matthew Smith
I wanna add, for headcanon purposes, that the Beech trees in Rotoroa are covered in black sooty mold that covers even the ferns. It helps the ecosystem (read about it, it's pretty cool!), but it looks a little scary and makes everything smell like vinegar.

my garden is doing really well
thats the "lawn", and its shit, so im turning it into a small forest. its only native plants. (the hedges are invasive but they were already there. oh, and the ground was already like that. just moss and dirt.)
this is a taupata. they usually grow close to the ground, but this one was found in a 15x15 cm pot a few months ago so its kinda messed up. i think it was in that pot for years. when i pulled it out there was hardly any dirt left, and the dirt that was there was almost white (i think it went pale because of the nutrients being used up).
the tap root was only 10 cm long and had no room to grow, so im waiting for the roots to start growing so it can handle the wind properly. when it was in the pot the leaves were yellow, so its definitely getting better.
this one is a hybrid between the common lancewood and a fivefinger. such hybrids vary a lot in appearance, but this one is particularly interesting in that the leaves themselves look almost exactly like they do on a purebred lancewood, but they grow just like a fivefinger, although with only 3 leaflets.
ive got a few small kōwhai growing. they are legumes, and so have a symbiotic bacteria that converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form the plant can use. the soil quality is poor, so im hoping the kōwhai will fix that.
(image 1) i grew this kohekohe from seed. i found a fruiting plant in a forest, so i took a few seeds. theyre very easy to grow. they grow flowers on the trunk and primary branches, and flower in winter.
(image 2) i also grew these mountain flaxes from seed i found in the wild.
(image 3) this is a kahikatea. they can grow to 60-75 meters tall, making them Aotearoa's tallest tree. (its supposed to be brown btw).
(image 4) i bought some kākābeak a while ago and one of them flowered, and these saplings were grown from the resulting seeds. the parent plant has since died because the stem rotted (theyre a bit tricky to keep alive). this is the rarer species, of which there is only one in the wild.

someone i used to know lived on a house in wetlands. a former owner planted a kahikatea (a gymnosperm of aotearoa that grows in wetlands and is MASSIVE). by the time my friend lived there the tree took up half the yard and broke the footpath
So many people have wetlands in their yards and don't even know! "This spot in my yard is always soggy and wet! How do I fix it?"
They will of course tell you to install a French drain. DO NOT DO IT! Plant Wetland plants and allow it to helpfully absorb puddles of heavy rain and give you the gift of beauty!

The pond corner of the orchard. The land drains to here on the alluvial plain where the surface silts are thinner. The water table is only a metre below so this pond after heavy rain last night will be gone in a couple of days but the area is always damp. We removed the willows and replaced with native kahikatea that live in the swamps of Wairarapa before being felled for wood to make butter boxes for export. #apples #cider #orchard

Hamilton (New Zealand) City Council Turn Their Backs On Cyclists and Pedestrians
Our Hamilton City Council seems to now be controlled by a collection of pedestrian and cyclist hating conspiracy nutbags that have now decided to cancel projects that would have made using our streets safer. Ten projects have been removed from the 2023-24 transport programme, following decisions made by Hamilton City Council’s Infrastructure and Transport Committee at its first meeting of the year on 5 March 2024. These are:
Grey Street-Beale Street This project involved installation of a new roundabout and raised safety platforms and off-road paths for people on bikes.
Ulster Street-Abbotsford Street This project involved installation of a new signalised pedestrian crossing, raised safety platform and relocation of bus stops to become an in-lane bus stop.
Anglesea Street (Bryce Street to London Street) This project involved installation of a new signalised pedestrian crossing, raised safety platform, and the relocation of the bus stop on the eastern side of Anglesea Street to use the proposed new pedestrian crossing.
River Road The River Road project involved constructing a 1.3km footpath on the western side of River Road between Wairere Drive and Comries Road, and two raised safety platforms.
It requested staff cease work on. So these have already started and will just be left partly done and not finished.
Silverdale Road - shops.
Installation of raised safety platform at existing signalised crossing near shops.
Clarkin Road, near St Joseph’s School.
Installation of raised safety platform at existing signalised crossing for the school.
Clarkin Road, near Fairfield Intermediate and Primary Schools.
Installation of raised safety platform at existing signalised crossing for schools.
Borman Road, Hamilton Christian School.
Installation of raised safety platform at existing signalised crossing for school.
Higgins Road and Kahikatea Drive.
Raised intersection.
River Road near Waikato Diocesan School for Girls
A plan to construct a signalised crossing on River Road near Waikato Diocesan School for Girls will also not proceed.
These are all examples of how little these councillors (Andrew Bydder, Geoff Taylor, Tim Macindoe, Ewan Wilson just to mention a few) actually care for the people of Hamilton.

Embracing Nature's Balance: The Role of Arborists in Canterbury
Canterbury, a region adorned with picturesque landscapes and a rich tapestry of flora, is a haven for nature enthusiasts. Arborist Canterbury the beauty of the Canterbury environment lies a silent army dedicated to preserving and enhancing its natural splendor—the arborists. These skilled professionals play a crucial role in maintaining the health and vitality of the region's trees, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between urban development and nature.
The Arboreal Symphony of Canterbury:
Canterbury boasts a diverse range of tree species, from the towering kahikatea to the elegant totara. These trees not only contribute to the region's aesthetic appeal but also play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. However, the urbanization and development that accompany progress often pose a threat to these green guardians. This is where arborists step in, equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate the delicate balance between human expansion and environmental preservation.
Arborists as Tree Guardians:
Arborists in Canterbury are more than just tree surgeons; they are guardians of the arboreal ecosystem. Their expertise extends beyond simply pruning branches and removing trees. They are well-versed in the science of tree biology, understanding the unique needs and characteristics of each species. This knowledge allows them to make informed decisions regarding tree care, ensuring the longevity and vitality of the green giants that grace Canterbury's landscapes.
Preserving Urban Greenery:
As urban areas in Canterbury continue to grow, the need for effective tree management becomes increasingly crucial. Arborists play a pivotal role in urban forestry, addressing issues such as tree diseases, pest infestations, and ensuring the structural integrity of trees in urban settings. By implementing proactive tree care strategies, arborists contribute to the creation of sustainable urban environments where both humans and trees thrive in harmony.
Tree Risk Assessment and Management:
Canterbury's climate, with its occasional harsh weather conditions, poses challenges to the stability of trees. Arborists employ advanced techniques for tree risk assessment, identifying potential hazards and mitigating risks to prevent accidents. Their meticulous approach involves evaluating factors such as tree health, structural integrity, and environmental conditions to determine the best course of action, whether it be pruning, cabling, or, in extreme cases, tree removal.
Community Engagement and Education:
Arborists in Canterbury don't just work behind the scenes; they actively engage with the community to foster a culture of tree appreciation and conservation. Workshops, seminars, and community tree planting events are common initiatives led by arborists to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the region's green heritage. Through education and outreach, they empower residents to become stewards of their local environment, nurturing a sense of responsibility for the well-being of the trees that grace their neighborhoods.
Navigating Challenges:
Canterbury's arborists face unique challenges, from responding to the impact of climate change on tree health to managing the urban sprawl that encroaches upon natural habitats. These challenges necessitate continuous adaptation and innovation within the arboricultural field. Arborists in Canterbury are at the forefront of embracing new technologies, such as drone-assisted tree inspections and advanced tree care equipment, to enhance their ability to protect and preserve the region's trees.
Sustainable Practices:
In an era where environmental sustainability is a top priority, arborists in Canterbury are champions of sustainable tree care practices. From recycling pruned branches into mulch to promoting organic fertilization methods, they prioritize eco-friendly approaches that minimize the environmental footprint of their work. By adopting sustainable practices, arborists contribute not only to the well-being of individual trees but also to the overall health of Canterbury's ecosystems.
The Future of Arboriculture in Canterbury:
As Canterbury continues to evolve, so too will the role of arborists. The future of arboriculture in the region lies in a holistic approach that integrates cutting-edge technology, community involvement, and a deep understanding of ecological systems. Arborists will play a pivotal role in shaping the green infrastructure of Canterbury, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty and benefits of a well-maintained and thriving arboreal environment.
In conclusion, arborists in Canterbury are unsung heroes working tirelessly to maintain the delicate balance between human development and the preservation of nature's wonders. Their expertise, coupled with a passion for environmental stewardship, makes them instrumental in shaping a sustainable future for Canterbury—one where the urban and natural landscapes coalesce seamlessly, creating a harmonious haven for both residents and the diverse flora that graces this enchanting region.

Study of the Young Adult List in New Zealand
A paper published in Criminal Behaviour & Mental Health (2022) looked at the environmental accommodations of the Young Adult List (YAL), which is a specialised District Court in New Zealand developed for young adults aged 18-25 years, to increase procedural fairness.
In Māori terms, Young Adult List is Iti rearea teitei kahikatea ka taea, and the name was gifted by the Ngati Toa iwi (tribe) symbolising that challenges can be overcome with determination.
I found the key recommendations from this research truly eye-opening to offer greater responsiveness and accessibility to a person with neurodivergence globally.
The results table is summarised here:
