The oldest cidery in England? Well that’s its claim. Certainly very old and passed though generations of cider makers. #cider #Devon #England

Poundhouse is the word for the place where apples are crushed and pressed to make cider. First recorded in 1646 in Devon “The Pownd howse: The Apple pownd or Press.“ in M. Cash, Devon Inventories 16th & 17th Century.
And again in W Marshall, Rural Economy W England vol 1 page 224 “The ordinary place of manufacture [of cider], provincially the ‘pound house’,—is generally a mean shed or hovel”.

First season fruit for this Dyer’s Pass perry pear quince rootstock with Beurre Hardy interstem. It’s so laden I am worried about the weight! Grafted 4 years ago. Perry pears are having a good year this year, it will be a good harvest. And no fireblight so far. Ever vigilant after losing a tree 2 years ago. #perry #pears #orchard #Aotearoa #Wairarapa #NewZealand

Be careful what you wish for. After windy dry sunny weather we now have drizzle……. I am sure the trees love it though. Me, I’m doing indoor work getting the apple pressing area ready for harvest instead. #apples #orchard #trees #cidery

Birds of Beau Vista orchards - the California quail. It is widespread after being introduced into Aotearoa/NZ in 1862 from western United States. They are small, plump birds with a distinctive black and white head, a black plume.
California quail are gregarious and live in coveys of 10–100 birds. Their diet consists mostly of seeds, but also includes apples on the ground and leaves and bugs in the grass swath as they forage in the orchard. #birds #orithology #apples #orchard

A Czech family Xmas tradition tradition. After the Christmas dinner, you take an apple and cut it in half horizontally to see the pattern of the seeds inside the apple core . If you get a nice regular star, it means that the upcoming year will bring you good health and prosperity. This is the normal pattern after a successful fertilisation at blossom time. A cross ( from one ovary failing to be fertilised ) symbolizes illness or even death and if your apple happens to be worm-eaten from the inside, you can expect bad luck in the next year. I find it interesting these ‘predictors’ of next years fortunes often rely on last years weather. #Czech #apple #tradition #Xmas

Apples have recently become a Chinese Christmas icon: exquisitely wrapped fruit with images of Santa Claus etc. Apples are everywhere, they are sold in swanky shopping malls and from the back of trucks at makeshift night markets.
But why apples? Firstly China is the home of apples. Also Chinese like auspicious-sounding gifts. Christmas Eve in Mardarin is pingan ye (平安夜), means peaceful night, which phonetically resembles the word for apple, pingguo (苹果). Some call it ping an guo, a homophone for “peace fruit.” #China #apples #tradition #Xmas

Asturian Sidra natural has no carbonation added. So these ciders, are pretty flat straight from the bottle. Which is why the best way to pour is the ‘throw’ approach to introduce that touch of fizziness to really open up the acetic volatile aromas classic to this cider. #cider #sidra #spain

Teepee Cider was pleased to be able to place a display at the Martinborough iSite. Thanks to some computer wizardry by David FitzJohn there is over a 100 photographs rotating on the LCD screen all about the year’s cycle in an orchard and cidery. Come into the iSite and take a look. Book visit to us of a winery, have a coffee at the excellent cafe, read a book at the library and let the kid in you play in the fantastic playground outside. #orchard #cidery #Martinborough #iSite

Sometimes you have to drink the library to confirm the quality and longevity. This was 2013 vintage and it’s still as fresh as yesterday. Most rewarding after a hard day at the orchard and a well earned break mid afternoon. #cider #orchard #wairarapa #longevity #ageing

The road to the orchard across the Remutuka Pass. This range of mountains separates our fertile alluvial Wairarapa valley from Wellington our capital. As I drive I remember the soldiers who marched in foot over here in wars gone by. A hard slog. #orchard #RemutakaPass #soldiers #cider

The Green Man looking over Beau Vista orchard and cidery in the Wairarapa Aotearoa/NZ. A long way from home, as he came from a market at Burnham on Sea Norfolk England. Doing a good job as blossom was good and we gave a great crop of cider apples and perry pears. #cider #perry #apples #pears #GreenMan
