"Apologies if these feel a little thrown together last minute, I only just learned yesterday that your birthday was on saturday." Andi presented Karin with a folder full of the various life drawing sketches Andi had drawn of the Kurosaki girl, some she'd even gone over and recolored with pastels and colored pencils. "There's that... plus a little extra." Andi tapped a painted fingernail against a thumbdrive taped to the folder... it had nudes... Andi gave Karin a thumbdrive full of nudes. "Happy birthday."
Karin received the folder with a fairly thoughtful expression, brows lifting appreciatively after she opened it to review the contents. The artwork was all rather more gussied up than she remembered having seen at the time she'd posed for it, and the differences gave her pause as she slowly flipped through the works. It was flashy enough that she didn't immediately notice the thumb drive, instead rather taken by some of the coloration choices....
When her attention was drawn to the device, she blinked and raised an eyebrow. She was used to passing and being passed such things as part of her job, but for the moment the intention behind it escaped her. Her first thought, given the phrasing, was maybe that they were digital versions done up differently! Still, she put the mystery aside for the moment.
"This is... definitely the most personalized thing I've gotten in a while. You really didn't have to do all this, Andi. It's not like 33's a big milestone or anything. But... I appreciate it." Closing the folder, she pulled her artist into a big hug!

Enjoy this spooky Na'vi audio story I wrote for a Halloween-themed listening practice session on Kelutral! Transcription below the cut for those who want to read along. I'll also be adding the English translation in a reblog (adding that separately so that those who want to practiceâI know there's at least a few of you out there hrhâcan read along with the written Na'vi without accidentally "cheating" by looking at the English đ)

While I'm still a university student, I'm taking full advantage of the access I have to various research databases and online archives to look for materials relating to Dean & Jerry. Since I'm still a relatively new fan, I've been seeing a lot of this stuff for the first time which is exciting :-)

Elvis in Fort Worth, Texas, on January 11, 1958
youtube
Incredible footage colorization/restoration by đđđđ
đđđđ đđđđđđ on Youtube.
I swear I felt I was watching a modern times interview, like our own time's artists. The original B&W footage is awesome by itself but this restoration is such a fantastic job I just had to share with you right after watching for the first time myself, since the video had been recently updated to Youtube (today, March 7, 2024, actually). I have to add that all that channel's content is fabulous. âĽ
I'll share the original footage again, just in case you'd like to watch in B&W and without the music on the background:
youtube
Footage uploaded on Youtube channel "Elvis Presley News" | Original source: UNT (University of Texas) Digital Library. On their website: "Creation Information: Bookmark this section WBAP-TV (Television station : Fort Worth, Texas) January 11, 1958. This video is part of the collection entitled: KXAS-NBC 5 News Collection and was provided by the UNT Libraries Special Collections to the UNT Digital Library, a digital repository hosted by the UNT Libraries."
FOOTAGE INFO:
Elvis was at stopover in Fort Worth, Texas, on his way to Hollywood studios in Los Angeles, to begin filming 'King Creole'. On December 1957 Presley received his draft note from the Army. It's said he cut his sideburns shorter to look different for playing his character in King Creole tho, not because of the army.
In the interview above, there's a moment Elvis is asked about if he was worried cutting his famous sideburns off. He said "If it was a situation they'd cut them off and I never could have them anymore then I would worry about 'em, but I can grow it back."

Channel 5, KXAS now but WBAP-TV until 1974, is (and was) the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex's NBC affiliate.
7:30 pm Central time is 8:30 pm Eastern time, so this billboard is advertising Star Trek airing weekly in Prime Time over the NBC network. During STAR TREK's first season, its timeslot was, in fact, Thursday evenings starting at 8:30 Eastern/7:30 Central and Mountain. From those nuggets of information, we can date this photo from sometime between September 1966 to September 1967.

Dr. Philâs Fort Worth-based Merit Street Media lays off 38 employees
The nascent network is laying off its first batch of employees since launching in early April.
Merit Street Media, the network owned by Phil McGraw, better known as Dr. Phil, is laying off 38 employees, according to a Merit Street Media spokesperson.
The Fort Worth-based network said itâs cutting jobs by consolidating positions throughout its departments.
Among those hit hardest is the networkâs news team, which works on programs like Morning on Merit Street and The News on Merit Street.
âThe goal since day one has been to eliminate duplication and create a singular editorial and production group that services all Merit Street content. This is a step in that direction,â a Merit Street Media spokesperson told The Dallas Morning News over email.
Since the employees laid off were recently hired, they do not qualify for severance.
Approximately 100 employees remain at Merit Street Media.
âFollowing the brief summer hiatus of âDr. Phil Primetime,â Merit Street implemented ongoing consolidations of departments and roles in efforts to achieve efficiencies at the highest level, which unfortunately resulted in some layoffs,â a Merit Street Media spokesperson said.
Employees said they were blindsided by the layoffs, according to what a staffer told media news website Mediaite.
âThese layoffs came as a complete shock to everyone on the staff. We knew changes were happening at the network, but didnât realize this would be one of them,â they said. âSome people uprooted their entire lives to move here for this job without a safety net and now the rug has been pulled out from under them.â
Derik Lattig, a former member of the production staff on Dr. Phil Primetime and an industry professional for 35 years, said on X that he enjoyed his time at the network, but was one of the many laid off.
âOverall, it was a positive experience. The staff was very genuine, like a family, and really cared about the people that we lined up for interviews,â Lattig said. âIt was interesting to see this style of media, as opposed to the day in, day out, journalism that Iâve known, and everybody was very supportive, from the managers on down to Dr. Phil. Itâs just a sad thing that this has happened.â
One of the differences between Merit Street Media and other networks, McGraw said, was that it was committed to eliminating the traditional âsiloed approachâ in news programming, where teams work separately.
The layoffs are intended help the company achieve the vision of eliminating internal news siloes, according to an internal letter sent out to staff obtained by The News.
The letter was signed at the end by Joel Cheatwood, the networkâs executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Going forward, Dr. Phil Primetime and Morning on Merit will no longer have their own producers, according to the letter.
âYou may have noticed some changes across the network, including adjustments to department structures and the elimination of a small number of positions that were deemed redundant as our reorganization took shape,â the letter said. âThese changes were necessary to eliminate barriers between different shows and to move away from the practice of having production staffs dedicated solely to one show or project.â
Despite the layoffs, Merit Street Media signed some big names and media rights deals ahead of the networkâs proposed February 26 launch date, which was later delayed to April 2. Fort Worth-based Christian broadcast television network Trinity Broadcasting Network has been acting as Merit Street Mediaâs distribution partner since the launch.
The company has inked deals with names like Steve Harvey, Nancy Grace, Mike Rowe and Bear Grylls to air their programming and has signed former KPRC 2 Houston host Dominique Sachse and former KXAS-TV (NBC5) host Kris Gutierrez to help lead its news programming.
The company also signed its first sports broadcasting rights deal when it announced it was teaming up with the Professional Bull Riders league, becoming the exclusive home of the leagueâs premier individual tour, Unleash The Beast.
However, the staffer told Mediaite they are unsure of what Merit Street Mediaâs future will look like.
âThose left are being told very little,â they said. âWe are understandably nervous and have no idea as to the future of the network.â
Still, Merit Street Media maintains it has a bright future throughout the media world.
âWe are confidently getting better at what we do,â a Merit Street Media spokesperson said. âMerit will continue striving to create more synergy between all divisions including staff expanding their roles within our live news, original programming, and sports and music endeavors.â
In the letter signed by Cheatwood, he said he believes the network has better days ahead.
âIt is with great sadness that we have had to say goodbye to some of our colleagues. While our focus as a business must always be on achieving higher quality and greater efficiency, we must also acknowledge the significant impact these decisions can have on individuals,â the letter said. âHowever, as we continue to grow Merit Street Media â and believe me, we are just getting started â I am confident that the strength of our brand will create an abundance of new opportunities in the future.â
Dr. Phil's Merit Street Media cuts jobs in Fort Worth
Merit Street Media Inc. â the TV production company and network of Phil McGraw, aka Dr. Phil â has laid off employees less than a year after it announced its move to Fort Worth.
Merit Street Media said fewer than 40 of its 100 employees were laid off Friday and Monday.
Staff on the "Morning on Merit Street" and "The News on Merit Street" programs were the most affected.
A Merit Street Media spokesman said in an email to Dallas Business Journal the layoffs were made to "achieve efficiencies at the highest level" following the summer hiatus of "Dr. Phil Primetime," a talk show hosted by McGraw.
"We are confidently getting better at what we do," the statement said.
"Merit will continue striving to create more synergy between all divisions including staff expanding their roles within our live news, original programming, and sports and music endeavors.â
Numerous staffers affected by Merit Street's layoffs declined to comment or did not respond to interview requests.
But Carson Taylor, a video editor based in Los Angeles, said he was prepared to start a job this month as a video editor for "Dr. Phil Primetime," but was told the show was put on "indefinite hiatus" three days before he was supposed to start.
"I had already bought a $600 flight and started looking at apartments," he wrote in a LinkedIn message.
Merit Street Media launched last November inside a building at 5501 Alliance Gateway Fwy., at AllianceTexas in far north Fort Worth. Joel Cheatwood, a former executive at TEGNA, CNN and Fox News, is Merit Street's chief operating officer.
The network had debuted numerous original shows. "The Morning on Merit Street" and "The News on Merit Street" launched in February. The channel also featured outside content: In May, Merit Street struck a deal to cover Professional Bull Riders events live.
So sorry to those of you who were not told in a timely manner and already committed time and effort into the Dr Phil show.
I was actually walking to my leasing office to cancel my lease when I received the call to literally âfind a new jobâ and the whole time I thought it was just me.
I almost relocated from California to Fort Worth, Texas for the show.
This has given me the insight that; I could run a studio more efficiently than this.
They didnât even send me an NDA or confidentiality agreement until I posted my story on here.
Layoffs with âno warningâ.
Whatâs going on at Dr. Philâs Fort Worth media company?
Many of them moved across the country to start what they believed were stable, well-paying jobs.
Then on Friday, after just a matter of months, they were told they didnât have jobs anymore.
The layoffs at Dr. Philâs media company, Merit Street Media, were first reported by Mediaite on Friday.
By Monday, several of those laid off were already sending out rĂŠsumĂŠs.
Popular TV psychologist and talk show host Phil McGraw ended his long-running show âDr. Philâ in early 2023 and announced later that year that he would start a new Fort Worth-based media company with news and a new talk show.
âDr. Phil Primetimeâ launched on April 2.
The employees were laid off as part of âongoing consolidations of departments and roles in efforts to achieve efficiencies at the highest level, which unfortunately resulted in some layoffs,â according to a statement sent by Merit Street to the Star-Telegram.
While a source within the company told the Star-Telegram fewer than 40 people were laid off, another source who was among those terminated said it was closer to 50.
The source who was laid off, a producer who had been with the network since before it went on air, said the downsizing came as a shock.
The former producer said it was a traumatic event, with human resources staff pulling aside one employee at a time throughout the day.
Employees who were laid off would return to their desks and begin packing up.
Often they were in tears, and many employees who hadnât been called in for a meeting with HR yet were also crying.
The former employee, who asked not to be named for fear of being blacklisted as they searched for a new job, said nobody was receiving severance pay as part of the layoff and were told their insurance would run out at the end of the month.
The source still with the network said no severance was offered because none of the employees had been employed long enough.
âWe were just let go from a job out of nowhere ⌠no warning, no anything,â said another former Merit Street Media employee who also asked to remain anonymous.
Some of the former employees reported having moved to Fort Worth from states âmore than 12 hours awayâ just a few months ago.
They had no idea how they were going to pay rent on 12- and 15-month leases they recently signed.
Other former employees had just wrapped up a taping when they were called in for a âpowwowâ and told they had been let go.
âThatâs what she called it, a powwow,â the former employee said.
Two of the former employees had already applied for new jobs and become each otherâs competition by Monday morning.
Others were still reeling from the news.
Several already had the #OpenToWork logo on their LinkedIn profile photos on Monday.
âItâs overwhelming, and I canât even think about next steps,â said another who also asked to remain anonymous.
âIâve never been fired or let go from any job in my entire life, and Iâve never been in a position where I felt this vulnerable in terms of if Iâm going to be able to keep a roof over my head.â
An internal email shared with the Star-Telegram said the company eliminated a âsmall number of positions that were deemed redundant as our reorganization took shape.â
The email from Joel Cheatwood, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Merit Street, said the layoffs didnât mean the company was done growing.
âIt is with great sadness that we have to say goodbye to some of our colleagues,â Cheatwood said in the email.
âWhile our focus as a business must always be on achieving higher quality and greater efficiency, we must also acknowledge the significant impact these decisions can have on individuals.â
Cheatwood wrote that the network will no longer have producers for specific shows, theyâll all work collaboratively on all programming.
He said separate planning for news, entertainment, sports and other programming on the channel was an outdated approach that hindered productivity.
One former employee said they werenât sure about that.
Many employees now arenât sure what their jobs will be, and they expect to have more work to do across more areas.
The former employee said that would make it harder for employees to be specialized and could cause volatility in work schedules, reducing efficiency.
The way the layoffs were handled has also already impacted morale at the network, a former employee said.
The former employee said morale was already noticeably damaged on the day layoffs were happening, and the former employee has heard from employees still there that everyone is on edge.
Some still employed told the former employee they donât feel like their jobs are safe and that anxiety from witnessing layoffs has stayed with them.
The Star-Telegram also spoke to a Merit Street freelancer who was not let go, but said he disagreed with how the layoffs were conducted.
âItâs so sad, itâs unthinkable,â he said.
The freelancer said that while the layoffs were taking place, a large buffet had been set up for talk show guests, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who was at the Merit Street studios to tape a roundtable discussion with Dr. Phil and others âabout whether God spared the lifeâ of former president Donald Trump during the assassination attempt last month.
âIt was basically this split screen of everybodyâs getting laid off, and all of the higher-ups are having this big, massive celebratory buffet for, like, the new direction of the network,â he said. âSo I think that also rubs people the wrong way.â
Also in attendance for the taping was Matt Crouch, president of Merit Street Media partner Trinity Broadcast Network.
A TBN blog post from March titled, âWhere Values & Vision Meet: TBN & Merit Street Media,â states that âDr. Phil underscores the enduring importance of shared values in shaping a just and prosperous society.â
The layoffs came as no surprise to Mansfield native Carson Taylor, who now lives in California. He was hired by Merit Street Media for an editor job in July, but was told on Aug. 1 that his hiring had been canceled.
âFrom my point of view, itâs extremely disturbing and disappointing to see such television industry titans with years of experience run a production company like such amateurs,â he said in a written exchange. âEspecially with Dr. Philâs mental health background. To uproot people from other states, offer them a relocation package and their dream salary and then turn around and have nothing.â

Staffers at Dr. Philâs Network Left in âComplete Shockâ After Sudden Layoffs
Merit Street Media, the network helmed by Phil McGraw, popularly known as âDr. Phil,â laid off multiple staffers unexpectedly on Friday morning, Mediaite has exclusively learned.
A Merit Street Media staffer with knowledge of the layoffs told Mediaite at least 15 staffers from the news division â including âMorning on Merit Streetâ and âThe News on Merit Streetâ â were let go without reason or a severance package.
The staffer told Mediaite, âThese layoffs came as a complete shock to everyone on the staff. We knew changes were happening at the network, but didnât realize this would be one of them.â They added, âSome people uprooted their entire lives to move here for this job without a safety net and now the rug has been pulled out from under them.â
The Merit Street studios are located in Fort Worth, Texas.
In February, McGraw announced his show, Dr. Phil Primetime, would premiere on the new network and explained the reason he chose the name âMerit.â
âThe name of our new network, Merit Street Media, holds a special significance. I chose âMeritâ to honor the meritocracy upon which our amazing country was built, and âStreetâ to represent âMain Streetâ America. We are now headquartered in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where a brand-new, state-of-the-art broadcast center, spanning over 5 acres, is near completion. Many dedicated âDr. Philâ team members have made the transition with me, relocating their families to Texas, so we can continue working together, alongside all of you at home,â the statement read.
Meanwhile, the staffer opined, âThose left are being told very little. We are understandably nervous and have no idea as to the future of the network.â
Mediaite reached out to Merit Street Media for comment, but did not receive a reply.
This article will be updated if we get a response.
Lt. Governor Patrick joined Dr. Phil and Matt Crouch on TBN last night discussing whether President Trump's survival from the assassination attempt was luck or divine intervention.  âŚ
