You know what’s kinda funny to me, how people say they hate or dislike country music because it’s only about a guy losing a girlfriend or wife and drinking his sorrows away.

But if you listen to some of the older songs it’s more than that. They tell stories about soldiers who didn’t make it, missing an opportunity, a baby being born and how they changed the parents’ lives, mental health, abuse, death, the way your view on love changes as you age, disabilities, battles, how the good book can help you find a higher power, ghosts.

The people who are saying that they don’t like country music are probably only listening to the newer artists, not taking the time to go back and see the older generation and hear the stories they have to tell.

Queer movie: some interviews

In between unpacking + doing laundry, started sorting through the m a n y (!!!) festival + related interviews for this movie. This process has become super helpful for me before seeing a movie which I’ve heard + thought a lot about. I appreciate some people don’t want to hear anything before seeing a movie. For me the press conversations provide much needed context. At any rate, if you’re interested, here are a few interviews I found engaging. Maybe there will be more in a later post??

First one from the Spotlight Gala presentation at #NYFF62 (22 min) with screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, costume designer Jonathan Anderson, Guadagnino, Starkey + Craig. Per usual for these larger events, it’s a bit stilted at the beginning and loosens up at the halfway mark.

Loved learning more from Justin Kuritzke about his design parameters for writing the script (4:49 min). The way he shares his respect for Burrough’s words in the original source material accomplished something I did not believe was possible: I’m considering re-reading the book!

This is short (2:11 min), sweet clip is from after the press screening. Luca does his best to compliment DC’s way of being on set and as an actor, and Daniel is his usual self-effacing ‘ah, I dunno, I just do it’ self. It’s a light-hearted grace note.

This one from MainOnline is great because it features Daniel + Drew together, separate from Luca; Luca on his own; and the whole thing outside of the festival crowd (6:09 min) . Enjoyed hearing D + D sort through how they handled the physicality of their performances (beyond their sexual intimacy) and watching the two of them together. (There’s also a hilarious moment as DC is walking into the interview where he ends up holding a cap-less Sharpie after signing something for a fan.)

And lastly, this thoughtful reflection on both the themes of pain, longing and desire, as well as appreciation for the costuming and soundtrack from Points of Review (12:27 min). Appreciate his observation how, “Guadagnino finishes the story in a way that Burroughs never could, and this movie provides a physical manifestation of the pain Burroughs was consistently and inescapably attempting to combat throughout his life.” Agree or disagree, I found that addition to the conversation helpful.

When the BTS becomes the shot!

Caleb caught this candid of me as Craig La Mere was discussing one of his methods for lighting a subject with only one light. As most instructors do take their time to explain the techniques, we as models will have downtime (sometimes in front of the class) until we’re needed for the demonstration. As I stood there, legs shoulder-width apart, hands residing in their respective pockets, I noticed a photographer walking by the demo with their camera in hand. Through the silhouettes of attendees, eye contact was established. Then, he made a face that said, “let me get this shot,” and I obliged. Seeing the results, I’m glad we were in the right place (and had the right lighting) at the right time.
