In the heart of occupied Palestine, the dreams of innocent women are torn away by the merciless hands of the Israeli occupation. These women—mothers, university students, daughters—each of them bound by their unwavering love for their homeland, their thirst for knowledge, and their yearning for freedom. Their only "crime" is daring to live with dignity in a world that seeks to deny them even that. But the occupation, in its fear of their unbreakable spirit, tries to shackle their bodies, believing that walls and chains can suppress their power. Yet, behind the cold iron bars, their courage remains fierce, their hope burning brighter than ever. The darkness of their cells cannot dim the light of resistance they carry within. These chains are temporary; the oppression will crumble. For the freedom that pulses in their hearts is inevitable, unstoppable—an eternal flame that no prison can ever extinguish.

Crimes Against Women: A Global Crisis
Throughout history and across cultures, women have been subjected to unspeakable acts of violence and torture. These atrocities have taken many forms, ranging from physical abuse to psychological torment, and have left lasting scars on countless lives. Despite progress in some areas, crimes against women continue to be a pervasive and persistent problem worldwide.
Historical and Modern-Day Tortures Endured by Women
Historical Tortures:
Witch Hunts: During the 16th and 17th centuries, thousands of women across Europe and America were tortured and executed under the suspicion of witchcraft. These women were often innocent victims of misogyny, scapegoated for societal woes.
Foot Binding: In China, the practice of foot binding, which began in the 10th century, subjected women to severe pain and lifelong disability, all to conform to societal standards of beauty.
Honor Killings: A practice rooted in ancient traditions and still prevalent in parts of the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa, where women are murdered by their own families to preserve "honor" after perceived acts of shame, such as premarital relationships.
Modern-Day Tortures:
Domestic Violence: Globally, 1 in 3 women has experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, often at the hands of an intimate partner. Domestic violence remains one of the most widespread yet underreported crimes against women.
Sexual Violence and Rape: Women and girls around the world continue to be victims of sexual violence, including rape, trafficking, and sexual harassment. The use of rape as a weapon of war in conflict zones is a particularly egregious example of this atrocity.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM): In parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, FGM is still practiced on millions of girls and women. This brutal procedure, often performed without consent, causes severe physical and psychological harm.
Human Trafficking: Women and girls make up 71% of all human trafficking victims globally, with many forced into sexual exploitation or forced labor under inhumane conditions.
Cyber Abuse: With the rise of technology, women face new forms of abuse, including cyberstalking, revenge porn, and online harassment. This digital abuse can have devastating psychological effects, often leading to isolation and depression.
Events from History and Recent Times
The Rwandan Genocide (1994):
During the Rwandan Genocide, an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 women were raped. Sexual violence was systematically used as a tool of war, leaving a legacy of trauma that persists to this day.
Nirbhaya Case (2012, India):
The brutal gang rape and murder of a young woman in Delhi sparked nationwide protests and led to significant changes in India’s laws regarding sexual violence. The case highlighted the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in India.
The Yazidi Women (2014, Iraq):
The Islamic State (ISIS) abducted thousands of Yazidi women and girls, subjecting them to rape, forced marriages, and sexual slavery. The plight of these women brought international attention to the use of sexual violence as a tactic of terror.
#MeToo Movement (2017-Present):
Originating in the United States and spreading globally, the #MeToo movement has empowered women to speak out against sexual harassment and assault, exposing high-profile abusers and challenging systemic gender inequalities.
Dealing with Trauma
The trauma resulting from such violence can be profound and long-lasting. Healing from this trauma requires a multi-faceted approach:
Seek Professional Help:
Therapy with a licensed counselor or psychologist who specializes in trauma can be invaluable. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are effective treatments for PTSD and trauma-related disorders.
Join Support Groups:
Connecting with others who have experienced similar trauma can provide comfort and solidarity. Support groups offer a space to share experiences, receive encouragement, and learn coping strategies.
Practice Self-Care:
Engaging in self-care activities such as mindfulness, meditation, exercise, and creative expression can help manage stress and improve mental well-being.
Report and Seek Justice:
Whenever possible, report the crime to authorities. It’s crucial to hold perpetrators accountable and to seek justice, not only for oneself but for others who may be at risk.
Education and Advocacy:
Educating oneself and others about the issues of violence against women is essential. Advocacy for legal reforms, better protection, and more robust support systems can lead to lasting change.

IT'S TIME WOMEN STAND UP FOR WHAT IS THEIRS
So the Indian Judicial system has certain good advantages and certain disadvantages, as we know does everything in life. The Indian system after years of struggle paid attention to the woes of the Women and children who have been turned out of the house of the husband. By the provision of Article 125 of CrPC a wife and her children are entitled to receive an alimony or commonly known as maintenance in court of law, from the estranged husband on a monthly basis for the survival and fulfilment of the one's daily needs. Now one thinks as to how is this particular amount decided and exactly what criteria is followed, well the answer to this question is plain and simple. The court agrees to the fact that both the wife and children are entitled to the life they were used to living with the husband and at the same time the earning capacity of the husband is also taken into account while the amount is being decided. The husband at no point can deny his wife and children this maintenance, it is their legal right and in this case the law supports both.
There is a separate amount of maintenance that is given to the wife and the children by the court of law, if at any point the wife does get married the alimony she receives does stop thereafter as she is no more dependent on the estranged husband to maintain her. A boy child is entitled to maintenance until the day he completes his studies which is basically until he attains majority, whereas in some parts of the law it is said that a girl child is liable for maintenance until she get's married, but let's be honest there is a lot of contention on this point and there is not clear cute decision or ruling that has been issued for the same. Ofcourse there are certain criteria's under which a husband is protected from unnecessary cruelty from the wife, but I won't bore you with the details.
This rule applies to both Legitimate as well as Illegitimate children as the court of law does not differentiate between either. If at any point the husband fails to pay the amount by the stipulated date he may be fined or even reprimanded by the court of law.
Article 127 CrPC deals with the Alteration of Maintenance that a wife of chile receive from the court. These alterations can be to increase the stated alimony or a one time settlement. In a recent case in Chandigarh an application was filed by a lawyer under this very Article in favour of his client who at one time was awarded 5000 rupees as monthly maintenance and having seen the inflation in today's time and the growing expenses of the children and their education, the court took the application into consideration and the maintenance that was granted to the mother and daughter was modified keeping all the growing trends in mind.
Yes the Judicial system takes it's time and one does not get a timely resolution and in certain cases one loses their childhood in the hope of getting what one deserves and one can only hope that the court understands the needs that a child has in his early ages. The court follows procedures which are time consuming and at times by the time one get's their maintenance it's too late as all the important decisions have been made in life and the dire impact of not being able to afford a decent college for higher studies, ends up having a deep and scarring impact on the child in question.

The Story of “Woke Up This Morning”
Track: Woke Up This Morning, by Alabama 3
The beat kicks in and James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, reaches out and grabs the – now defunct – New Jersey Turnpike ticket. It’s a perfect pairing of music and drama. The song Woke Up This Morning is from the British band Alabama 3. It was on their 1997 album “Exile on Coldharbour Lane” and was co-written by bandmates including Rob Spragg. It was based on the 1996 second trial of British woman Sara Thornton for the 1989 murder of her husband.
Already, sentence to “life”, the second trial occurred because Thornton's case was taken up by “Justice for Women”. That group believed that her case had not been handled correctly due to the domestic violence she suffered throughout her marriage.
A bit of license was taken in the lyrics…since Sara killed her husband with a knife…so technically she never “got herself a gun”.

Women's safety is a significant concern globally, with issues like rape, murder, and domestic violence and abuse persisting. Which makes difficult for women to feel safe in their own homes. Family members can be perpetrators of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, making home a dangerous place.
A recent incident at RG Kar Medical College has sparked outrage, leading to protests and boycotts. However, it's essential to question the effectiveness of these actions in driving meaningful change. The root cause of these problems lies in the mentality of individuals, particularly those who perpetuate patriarchal beliefs.
A woman's attire or appearance is never the cause of rape or sexual assault. The root cause of such heinous crimes is the perpetrator's mental attitude, mindset, and lack of respect for boundaries and consent. It's essential to shift the focus from victim-blaming to holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
We've been taught since our childhood that society is male-dominated, and this mindset is often reinforced by some female family members (Kakimaa, Masimaa, Pisimaa, Mamimaa, Jethimaa, Thakumaa, Didimaa, SASURI Maa), passing down harmful gender stereotypes to future generations.
In 2024, such thinking is unacceptable and contradicts the pursuit of justice. It's crucial to recognize and challenge these double standards and narcissistic behaviors to create a more equitable society.
