We want justice for Lisa Edwards! Lisa was physically disabled and was in the care and custody of Knoxville Police Department when she became unresponsive. KPD refused to get her the medical attention she desperately and clearly needed, after pleading and begging for it repeatedly. It is very clear by the body cams of the officers, Lisa was in respiratory distress and had strong signs of a stroke. She had slurred speech, paralysis on the left side of her body, and release of bodily fluids. She told KPD repeatedly that she had a stroke, couldn’t walk, and couldn’t breathe. After being mocked, laughed at, ridiculed, degraded, berated, taunted, cursed at, tortured, etc., KPD failed their duty to protect and serve. Ultimately, because of negligence from KPD and Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Lisa died. We want Justice! We want the four KPD officers (Sgt. Brandon Wardlaw, Officer Adam Barnett, Officer Timothy Distasio, and Transportation Officer Danny Dugan) held accountable for their actions. We want the medical staff, including security, at Fort Sanders Medical Center held accountable for their actions. We also want policies and procedures changed, put into action, and enforced by all parties responsible for these hideous and horrific acts of negligence.
Why is this important?
The family, friends, community, and country of Lisa Edwards deserve justice!

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) is fond of responding to his detractors with a bit of advice: “Let your haters be your waiters when you sit down at the table of success.”
The Department of Justice now seems to have a few things to say about Adams’ success. In a 57-page, five-count indictment unsealed Thursday, federal prosecutors accused him of taking bribes from foreign nationals and doling out favors over a span of nearly a decade.
Others in his orbit have also been investigated by federal authorities, leading to several high-profile resignations this month — among them police commissioner Edward Caban and mayoral legal adviser Lisa Zornberg.
Adams said the charges were “entirely false” and “based on lies,” adding that he looks forward to defending himself.
“I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and my spirit,” he said.
Adams, a former captain with the New York Police Department, was elected mayor of the country’s largest city in 2021 on a pro-NYPD platform, and is seeking reelection in 2025.
The indictment paints a picture of a man who is comfortable accepting luxuries either for free or little cost, allegedly using fake paper trails and cash to conceal them, and performing various favors in return. It also accuses him of using a donation-matching program aimed at giving New Yorkers a stronger voice in local elections to steal some $10 million in public funds.
Here’s what we learned about the accusations:
Adams allegedly took a lot of money from Turkish nationals who believed he could be president someday.
Prosecutors say foreign nationals seeking favors from Adams funneled cash to his campaign through American citizens in a “straw man” setup.
A text exchange between a Turkish businessman and an aide to Adams provided insight into the deals:
“Fund Raising in Turkey is not legal, but I think I can raise money for your campaign off the record,” the businessman wrote. Asked how Adams would formally declare the funds as a campaign donation to comply with the law, the businessman responded: “He won’t declare it ... Or ... We’ll make the donation through an American citizen in the U.S .... A Turk ... I’ll give cash to him in Turkey ... Or I’ll send it to an American ... He will make a donation to you.”
The aide said Adams “wouldn’t get involved in such games” because it “might cause a big stink later on,” but promised to talk to Adams about it.
Adams’ texted his feelings about a different but similar proposal from another Turkish national.
“I don’t want his willing to help be waisted [sic],” Adams allegedly wrote.
At least one of the Turkish nationals believed Adams might be president of the United States one day, according to the indictment.
He was a frequent flier on a Turkish airline.
Adams either flew for free or for a heavily discounted rate on a Turkish airline owned in large part by the Turkish government, according to the indictment, which noted destinations included “France, China, Sri Lanka, India, Hungary and Turkey itself.” He allegedly did so even when it was less convenient than other options, like transferring through Istanbul to get to France.
Prosecutors say the business class flights to India, taken with his partner in 2016, would have cost $15,000, but the couple paid less than $3,000 and accepted free upgrades. Another trip taken in 2017 with several companions would have cost $35,000 regularly.
An Adams staffer arranging flights for him in June 2021 told an employee of the airline to charge a price that was “somewhat real” because “we don’t want [the media] to say he is flying for free.”
Turkish nationals “further arranged for Adams and his companions to receive, among other things, free rooms at opulent hotels, free meals at high-end restaurants, and free luxurious entertainment while in Turkey,” the indictment stated.
Adams tried hiding his antics, but incriminating texts remained.
One exchange between Adams and a staffer stood out in the indictment. The pair were texting about another possible trip to Turkey in 2019.
“To be o[n the] safe side Please Delete all messages you send me,” the staffer texted Adams.
He texted back, “Always do.”
A staffer deleted texts during her FBI interview.
In November 2023, an Adams staffer submitted to a voluntary interview with the FBI. At one point, the indictment said, she “excused herself to a bathroom and, while there, deleted the encrypted messaging applications she had used to communicate” with Adams and his Turkish contacts.
Adams helped open a costly new skyscraper despite flaws.
Adams allegedly ensured that a 36-floor building that would serve as the new home of the Turkish consulate could open quickly, in time for a visit by the Turkish president in September 2021.
The New York Fire Department was concerned about dozens of defects with the building. But a top NYFD official wrote a “conditional letter of no objection” to the building, which he had never done before, and it opened in time.
He allegedly made other construction problems go away.
One of the straw donors, who was not a member of the city’s Turkish community, later texted Adams about a problem with the city’s Department of Buildings.
Tumblr media
He is famous in Turkey, apparently.
One of the straw donors was a Turkish entrepreneur referred to in the indictment as “the Promoter,” who arranges events for wealthy and powerful people to meet one another. The indictment states that he was “hoping to leverage Adams’ considerable fame in Turkey to benefit the Promoter’s clients.”
Right after Adams won the 2021 mayoral election, the man suggested in a text message to another Turkish national that he intended “to go and talk to our elders in Ankara about how we can turn this into an advantage for our country’s lobby.”
According to prosecutors, Adams was living it up on his visits to the country. One trip included a stay at the Four Seasons, a yacht tour, a stay at a luxury beach resort, and a car and driver. He paid $720.
He ignored the Armenian genocide on its remembrance day.
As mayor, Adams did not make a statement on the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day in 2022, allegedly on request from his Turkish contacts. Turkish nationalists continue to deny the systematic massacre that began in 1915.
A secretive 2025 Adams campaign event was allegedly filled with foreign nationals.
Prosecutors say Adams welcomed wealthy foreigners to a fundraising event in a Manhattan hotel which was billed as a climate-related event. A PowerPoint presentation was allegedly created to help hide the true purpose of the event, saying it was hosted by “International Sustainability Leaders” and had a ticket price of $5,000.
He told the FBI he forgot his phone password.
When the FBI executed a search warrant for Adams’ devices in November, they found his mobile phone to be locked. Adams claimed he’d recently changed the password from a four-digit number to a six-digit number — and forgotten it.

Federal agents have raided the homes of top aides and confidants to New York Mayor Eric Adams, including the city’s police commissioner, in what appeared to be a major corruption probe at the heart of America’s biggest city.
In addition to NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, the raids on Wednesday and Thursday targeted the city’s deputy mayor for criminal justice, Philip Banks III, his brother, schools Chancellor David Banks, First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, and a third Banks brother, Terrence Banks, who is not a city official, local media reported.
"Investigators have not indicated to us the mayor or his staff are targets of any investigation," Lisa Zornberg, the mayor’s chief counsel, said in a statement. "As a former member of law enforcement, the mayor has repeatedly made clear that all members of the team need to follow the law."
As he left City Hall in lower Manhattan on Thursday afternoon, Adams, a former police captain, told reporters, “The goal is to follow the law and that is what this administration always stood for and what we’re going to continue to stand for.”
The search warrants at the homes of the deputy mayors and the schools chancellor were first reported by the nonprofit news outlet The City. The seizure by federal agents of the police commissioner’s phones was first reported by Spectrum News NY1.
While New York, like most big cities, has had its share of scandals, the search warrant on Police Commissioner Caban, by investigators from the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan, was striking.
“It’s unprecedented for a commissioner to even be mentioned in the context of a federal criminal investigation,” said Hank Sheinkopf, a veteran Democratic political consultant. While other police commissioners oversaw the NYPD during federal probes of the department’s practices, and of individual officers, “not one of them had a federal search warrant served on them,” Sheinkopf said.
A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan declined to comment, as did the FBI.
More: NYC Mayor Eric Adams wants changes to sanctuary city laws, increased cooperation with ICE
Adams is known for keeping a tight circle of friends and confidants, many of whom date back to his days in the police department.
Deputy Mayor Philip Banks is a former top NYPD official who was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in an earlier federal bribery probe. His brother, schools Chancellor David Banks, is the romantic partner of First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright.
Adams adviser Timothy Pearson, who was also reportedly served with a search warrant, is a former police inspector. Pearson and Terrence Banks could not be reached for comment.
This week’s raids were unrelated to an ongoing federal investigation into possible illegal Turkish financing of Mayor Adams’ 2021 campaign, a source familiar with that probe said. The FBI seized Adams’ mobile phones and computer in November 2023, and searched the home of his campaign treasurer.
“The FBI is more engaged in municipal corruption cases around this country than it has ever been,” Sheinkopf said. “You know, those 5:30AM wakeup calls don’t come out of thin air.”

Strength. Golden Art Nouveau Tarot
Tumblr media
Facing What Scares Us Note: In historical decks, the cards of Strength and Justice are numbered XI and VIII, respectively. In order to conform with Kabbalistic associations, their numbering was exchanged in the nineteenth century by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (the magical order to which Arthur Edward Waite originally belonged). What makes us strong? The preceding card, the Chariot, traditionally represents the archetype of conquest—conquest in all spheres. The Charioteer who is able to rein in his unruly dark horse shows us “triumph in the mind,” as Waite puts it. Traditionally this conquest is the triumph of reason over passion, of mind over matter. In contrast, the power of Strength (or fortezza, force, fortitude, as the card was known in the earliest historical decks) is not about conquest but instead about relationship. Like the Chariot, this card also denotes the power of the human will, but the power here doesn’t look exactly like mastery. Force forces nothing. The Lady’s face is smooth and calm. Her hands are placed gently around the Lion’s mouth. Waite notes the ambiguity of this card in its traditional iconography: is the female figure opening the lion’s mouth or closing it? Waite chooses to portray the latter, and emphasizes that “her beneficent fortitude has already subdued the lion, which is being led by a chain of flowers.” De Angelis’s illustration for the Universal Tarot omits the flower garland detail but reinforces the gentleness of the Lady by adding a demure bonnet and wide collar. Over her head hovers the same figure-eight symbol for infinity (the lemniscate) that we find with the Magician. Indeed, these are the only two cards in the deck graced by that symbol. This parallel to the Magician is further emphasized in Colman Smith’s illustration for the 1909 deck. There, the Lady is garbed entirely in white, while the Lion’s skin is vibrant red. Red and white are the Magician’s colors. Moreover, the red blooms of the flower garland wrap around her waist as well as the Lion’s neck, forming a double loop of flowers that echoes the lemniscate over her head. Magician and Strength: what ties the two cards together? Strength denotes the movement of the human will as a force of alignment. Like the Magician, with his wand stretched up to the sky and the four elements laid out at his side, the Lady harmonizes with her world, joining into dynamic relationship with what otherwise might be separate and threatening. With her face bent toward the beast, their eyes engage. What might have been a dualistic opposition now takes a unitary form, like energy swirling around the two curves of a lemniscate or the two joined halves of the Tao. For many modern readers, the Lion represents our bestial nature, our unreason, our instinctual vigor. It’s another image like the black sphinx in the Chariot card—like the dark horse of desire from Plato’s allegory of the soul. Yet the roots and truth of this card spread deeper than any simple dualism can capture. The Lion is more basic and more powerful than that. Indeed, the Lion is everything that scares us. It’s everything that we would, if we could, simply reject. The card invites us to weave ourselves together with the things that scare us. We are invited to bind ourselves in the endless loop of the lemniscate, the sign of infinity and of beginnings that wrap back unto themselves. Strength reminds us of the kind of power that doesn’t aim for mastery or conquest but instead finds relationship, weaving together the good, the bad, and the indifferent. And then finally, there are those pale and delicate hands of the Lady. Tender and small, they are no match for the Lion’s teeth. Strength doesn’t arise from conquest but instead from a vulnerable patience. In this very moment, how might we turn toward the things that scare us? Lisa Freinkel Tishman

Matt Gaetz as AG is laughable if it weren't so horrific and dangerous
The nomination is really Trump's loyalty test of Senate Republicans: If they go along, there's nothing they won't go along with.
ROBERT REICH
NOV 13
Friends,
Trump has nominated Rep. Matt Gaetz to serve as America’s next Attorney General.
This would be laughable were it not so utterly dangerous.
Gaetz as Attorney General would all but guarantee that Trump weaponizes the Justice Department against his enemies — past, present, and future.
Ever since Trump was first indicted, Gaetz has been defending him non-stop, alleging that the prosecutions of Trump have been politically motivated, claiming that Joe Biden is behind them, charging the Biden administration with vindictiveness toward Trump, and saying that Trump would have every right to engage in similar vengeance toward Trump’s political enemies.
In making these bogus claims, Gaetz has often used Trump’s wildly partisan and incendiary language.
I worked in the Justice Department in the years following Richard Nixon’s attempt to use the Department to prosecute and intimidate Nixon’s enemies.
To restore faith and trust in the Department, President Gerald Ford appointed Edward Levi as Attorney General. Before his appointment, Levi had been dean of the University of Chicago Law School and president of the University of Chicago.
One of Levi’s most important accomplishments was to insulate the Department of Justice from political interference by establishing a set of rules that prevented the White House from privately contacting an Attorney General or any other Justice Department officials.
How far we’ve fallen.
Gaetz, a 42-year-old congressman from Florida, has zero qualifications for being the highest law enforcement official in the land. He has never been a government attorney. He has never been a judge.
Gaetz is now under investigation by the House Ethics Committee in connection with a sex-trafficking scandal. (The Justice Department investigated Gaetz for his alleged involvement with a girl who was 17 at that time, to determine if he paid for sex in violation of federal sex-trafficking laws, but closed the investigation last year after career prosecutors were reportly unsure about the credibility of two central witnesses.)
If confirmed, Gaetz would lead the Justice Department’s more than 100,000 employees at a time when Trump’s allies are demanding a purge of career DOJ staffers who may have opposed some of Trump’s efforts during his first term or worked on cases involving Trump or his supporters.
Gaetz has defended Trump at every turn, arguing that Trump has never violated any federal laws. After Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Gaetz was defiant. “We’re ashamed of nothing,” he publicly said.
In other words, nominating Gaetz to be Attorney General is only slightly less ridiculous than nominating Vladimir Putin to be Secretary of Defense.
The key question is whether Gaetz can be confirmed by a Republican Senate.
Two key Republican moderates have already indicated they would likely vote against him. Senator Susan Collins said she was “shocked” by the nomination; Senator Lisa Murkowsi said he was not a serious contender for the job.
But Senator Lindsey Graham — a reliable weather-vane for the unscrupulous, and currently the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee — said he was surprised Trump picked Gaetz, whom he called “clever,” and predicted Gaetz would face “tough questions” at his confirmation hearing.
But Graham also said he was inclined to support presidential appointments.
Gaetz’s nomination is a really test by Trump of how far he can go in intimidating, bullying, and generating fear among Senate Republicans.
No Senate Democrat will vote for Gaetz, so Trump and his allies are seeing the Gaetz nomination as a litmus test of loyalty to Trump.
This will be the clearest signal yet of how far Republican senators are willing to do Trump’s bidding on all sorts of sensitive issues, including cutting back Social Security and giving Putin what he wants in Ukraine.
If Trump can get 51 votes for Gaetz, he can get a Senate majority for anything Trump wants to do.

Lisa Frankenstein
[2 stars] Sometimes a movie is a complete misfire. Lisa Frankenstein is in that category. If you need a description, it is sort of Edward Scissorhands meets Serial Mom. But that doesn’t really do any of those justice. It comes down to having the wrong director at the helm. Zelda Williams just didn’t have control of the narrative, pace, or delivery. The timing and the style are all over the place,

Their Secrets Shall Keep Close: The Indentured Orphans of Truro Parish
By: Lisa Timmerman, Executive Director
Created in 1732 by the Virginia General Assembly, Truro Parish served those living above the Occoquan river to the western frontier, “
by the River Occoquan, and Bull run (a branch thereof) and a course from thence to the Indian thoroughfare of the blew ridge of mountains. And that all that part that lies above said bounds should be called and known by the name of Truro.” Thanks to the dedicated Rector and Vestry of Pohick Church, historians can delve into the transcribed vestry minutes from 1732-1785. Men occupied these elected positions with substantial authority over the social, financial, religious, and political affairs of the counties they served until the end of the 18th century with the separation of church and state. At Truro, the men collected levies, arranged the construction of new chapels along with the maintenance of existing ones, took care of the sick and disadvantaged, checked property land boundaries, and acted as local representative for the people as they were often chosen as delegates to the House of Burgesses. These records contain amazing gems as they included information ranging from baptisms to burials along with very specific details when constructing new churches, down to the measurements and type of wood.

(1736-37 map of the Northern Neck Proprietary by John Warner, ca. 1747. Library of Congress: Geography & Map Division)
Orphans frequent vestry books across Virginia as churches strove to place children separated from their parents, whether through death or financial hardships, in settings where they could train and become productive members of their society – productive defined by Virginia’s male patriarchy. Both Dettingen and Truro Parish considered orphan’s needs to fall within the vestry’s capacity (you can read more here and here). In George Webb’s 1736 book, The Office and Authority of a Justice of the Peace, he stated the general practice for orphans in Virginia. “Churchwardens shall annually give an account to the Orphans’ Court, of all poor children in their Parish, whose parents are unable to bring them up; Such poor children may, by the county courts be bound apprentices the Males ‘til 21, and Female ‘til 18 years of age to Tradesmen, or any necessary Employment.”

And they shall find the Said Servant Apparell Meat Drink and Lodging & all other necessaries meet & convenient for and during the term aforesaid.
Garrard Trammell provided specifics in his indentured contract in terms of their behavior. Virginia’s General Assembly continually passed acts against fornication, swearing, religious profaning, “Sabbath abusing,” drunkenness, and adultery. Controlling the sexual lives of indentured servants was a concern for Virginia’s patriarchy if the woman became pregnant, potentially costing labor, time, and resources. The contracts also specified dice, referring to Virginia’s fond pastime of gambling. Located even at historic Jamestown, gambling in forms of dice and cards became common features at parties and ordinaries. Captain John Smith bemoaned gambling and even though the Virginia Colony passed strict ordinances for this behavior in 1610, we find Virginia’s General Assembly still preoccupied with this in 1691. Passed in 04/1691, “An act for the more effectuall suppressing the severall sins and offences of swaring, cursing, profaineing Gods holy name, Sabbath abuseing, drunkenness, ffornication, and adultery,” punished offenders with fines, time in the stock, public lashings, and imprisonment. The General Assembly acknowledged the role of the vestry in this as well.
“That every person and persons who shall so harbour, entertaine or provide for the maintenance of such women or women, or frequent her or their company, or the company of any other lewd, after publique admonition to avoid the same, given by the minister and Church wardens, by and with the consent of the vestrey and vestryes of the parish or parishes wherein such person or persons shall dwel, and in case there be no minister then the Church wardens of the same, by the consent aforesaid, shall forfeit and pay for every time it shall be proved, that he or they have been in company of such woman or women after such admonition as aforesaid, as if he or they had really been convicted of adultery, and every woman or women guilty of the same offence shall receive the like punishment. And be it enacted by the authority aforesaid, and it is hereby enacted, That the grand juries of every respective county within this dominion do twice yearly make presentments against the offenders of this law, to the court of the county where the offence shall be committed, and that the justices of the same punish the offenders according to this act, all which said forfeiture shall be divided into three equall parts, one third thereof towards the building and repairing the Church or Chappel of ease in the parish where the said offence shall be committed one third towards the maintenance of the minister of the same, and the other third for him or them that will sue or informe for the same by bill, plaint, or information, or action of debt in any court of record within this dominion, in which no essoign, protection or wager of law shall be allowed.”
Of course, the term indentured servants was extremely complex depending upon the year (”freedom dues” changed), the parties involved, the region of Virginia, and the ages of those in the contract. At least for Dettingen and Truro Parish, the orphans did not become lost members of society, instead earning a place in history as we continue uncovering the stories of all people living in early Virginia.

Here is the link for a petition demanding justice for this woman, Lisa Edwards, who pleaded for her life and was met with vicious mockery. Please spread it around, they only need 400 more signatures.

WARNING ⚠ 🔞
VIEW AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION
On February 4th 2023, 60 year old Lisa Edwards was on a flight from Rhode Island to Knoxville when she began experiencing stomach pains. She had had a debilitating stroke in 2019, but had now mostly recovered and looked forward to moving to Knoxville.
After the flight, she was admitted to Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tennessee just South of Knoxville. She was quickly treated and released.
But miss Edwards still felt unwell so she went instead to Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville proper where she was admitted overnight for observations.
The next day, despite continued medical discomfort and against her will, Miss Edwards was discharged from Fort Sanders Medical Center.
But Miss Edwards refused to leave the Hospital, believing she was continuing to experience a medical emergency.
Hospital staff then chose to call Knoxville Police and requested her removal from Hospital grounds.
Police showed up and offered Miss Sanders an unpleasant ultimatum; leave the hospital or go to jail.
Miss Edwards refused to leave, choosing instead to stay where she felt safe: close to the doctors and nurses she felt she needed.
That's when Knoxville Police began abusing the 60 year old woman verbally and declared she was under arrest. They began forcing her into a police van she was unable to step into. They tried physically forcing her inside multiple times before deciding to put her in a police cruiser instead.
Throughout the experience, Miss Edwards repeatedly stated she was experiencing a medical emergency and even begged them not to let her die.
The officers, while assaulting her with abusive language, eventually physically forced Miss Edwards into the cruiser, clearly hurting her multiple times, and ignoring her constant medical complaints by declaring her "cleared" by hospital staff and to be "faking it".
Even throughout the car ride to the jail, despite Miss Edwards obvious physical and mental distress and her non-stop complaints that she was going to die, the officer driving the car continued with the verbal abuse even as she descended into unconsciousness. Clearly not taking the hint something was seriously wrong when Miss Edwards urinated herself in the cruiser, the officer instead takes the opportunity to abuse her for that as well.
Once she falls unconscious, the officer pulls over the vehicle and another officer opens up the back and screams at the unconscious woman to get up, and even grabs her roughly and forces her up where her head can be seen rolling around.
No human being should ever be treated as callously as this police force and hospital staff treated Lisa Edwards, let alone an old sick woman.
This is the most disgusting thing I've seen since the death of Eric Garner in Staten Island, who also begged officers not to kill him before they did.
The Capitalist For-Profit Healthcare system has reached all new lows here, as even a sickly old woman who recently had a stroke is ignored, discharged, and arrested when she refuses to leave a hospital while experiencing a medical emergency.
Do these people really think they can justify this behavior on the grounds of Medical fraud?
Maybe people wouldn't have to depend on Hospitals for board if there weren't armies of homeless people in every city.
But either case, the existence of medical fraud is no excuse for the way this woman was treated. Do her medical costs represent such a threat to the Hospital and Insurance company that suspicion of fraud is enough to deny her proper healthcare???
Apparently so in America.
As for the Police, they should be lynched in a public square or sent to the Gulags.

Justice. Golden Art Nouveau Tarot
Tumblr media
Making Right. Note: In historical decks, the trumps of Strength and Justice are numbered XI and VIII, respectively. In order to conform with Kabbalistic associations, their numbering was exchanged in the nineteenth century by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (the magical order to which Arthur Edward Waite originally belonged). When we crave justice, it’s because something has gone awry—become uneven—in our world. Something is owed, lacking, broken, stolen, lost. Like the capuchins, we’re hoping that we, or others we love, will get their due. When we seek justice, we’re typically seeking restoration. We want to be made whole. The trump card Justice, however, points us to the deep and abiding difficulties in this mindset. What would it mean to truly be made whole? In the Tarot, traditional iconography depicts Justice as a deity or monarch. (Justice is actually one of the four cardinal virtues.)Justice wields both a balance and a sword. From the perch of the dais on high, Justice offers the true measurement of all things. All things find their place and are regulated in terms of a just and cosmic order—a divine sense of balance. At the same time, the sword allows Justice to discriminate, to carve out the distinctions that enable the divine balancing act. If we’re going to weigh one thing against another, we’re going to have to cleave this from that. The act of Justice requires a capacity for discernment and fine divisions. Justice must slice the world into its various shades of gray so that any given action, any given deed, can be seen according to its true colors. But, in truth, how can I measure one moment against another? The Hebrew Bible famously identifies justice as the exchange of an eye for an eye. But can we truly adequately compensate for any loss, for any moment of suffering?
Do I tell the four-year-old who’s brokenhearted because they’ve lost their doll to get over it, it’s just a doll? Do I tell someone who’s lost a child that they will recover? What would it mean to recover from that kind of loss? What does it mean to recover from any kind of loss? Suffering is suffering. Forms of suffering are all incommensurable. Now is the time to forgo our efforts to leverage our world—to quit trying to justify our errors, balance out our losses, find solace by placing the burden of blame on somebody else’s shoulders. Apparently even monkeys can feel wronged and seek justice. But justice isn’t a thing to be sought. It isn’t something we can know or enshrine. Justice isn’t a divine force. It’s just the distinctly human activity of doing right, as best we can, and facing whatever comes next. Justice isn’t something from on high that we uncover. Justice is ours to make or break. It’s up to us to make the world right. What, even now, is calling for wholeness and restoration? Without leveraging anything, without trying to trade in this gain for that loss, how might you meet this moment of decision? How might you help your world regain its sense of rightful balance?
