Photos on my 2022 landscape and other outdoors calendar: June-December
June: St. Andrew’s Church, Little Snoring in Norfolk taken in September 2020
A photo from one end of last summer on the month to start a summer usually, this is different to anything else on the calendar as it’s a landmark photo something its nice to include if I can. This was such a key memory yet something of a runaway key photo from that stunning Norfolk holiday one of my true highlights of 2020 which had its landscape and landmark moments a lot which a strong wildlife and birding holiday this church which we came to see so much in the charming village we stayed in and captured in that breathtaking hot sunshine and blue days which defined most of the week. I do like how the sun is used in this and how it came out. I am looking forward to seeing this photo printed and I thought its something quite different to include a church in a calendar for me.
July: View from Stockbridge Down in Hampshire taken in July 2020
The amount of photos meant I think less deliberation between photos and putting them through their paces to complete this project this time so for landscapes especially I did rather go looking through my photos for certain aspects. This photo may not have faired as well under my past levels scrutinising my photos but this shows an aspect of a British landscape in the spring and summer which I have come to really appreciate even more and more than I already did the past few years and cherish the rich, life supporting, healthy, important to the planet and so colourful wild meadows and lush vegetation. I think this is one of my best ever photos for showing that, showing also one of Hampshire’s most beautiful areas especially in spring and summer. The bits of the photo within the nature reserve Stockbridge Down looking so nice contrasting with maybe other bits of the landscape so I like how this came out. I feel this expresses the exact landscape I wanted to and the more I think of it I can’t wait to see this one on the calendar. It was taken in July 2020 a month as so easily can happen with butterflies we need to see there at that time when we visited Stockbridge Down on three of the Sundays that month taking so many pictures so it was good to represent that too.
August: Portland in Dorset taken in April 2021
It’s a testament to what a glorious sunny day and what a glorious sunny week that was that this photo looks so sunny I chose it for August. It’s a testament to that day and week too as one of four pictures from that week off making my wildlife and landscape 2022 calendars in a time when my line ups were more of less finalised forcing their way on and this was one of two that Monday with the Lodmoor Mute Swan on my wildlife calendar too. In truth I had one slot to fill on my landscape calendar at that point and I wanted to fill it with a landscape I had not yet covered, and a sheer cliff coastal one was one such category. This one was just such a breathtaking view and I just wanted to capture it. I had my big lens on before in the interest of wildlife on the walk and I sometimes am lazy and just take landscapes with my big lens but when I saw this scene it was such a stunning view and had some nice aspects to it that I had to get my general lens back on to do it. It’s the pure simplicity of seeing something I find beautiful and snapping it. But also I like how the sea was so incredibly blue, the direction sign adds a charm to the landscape, the sun kisses the observatory in the landscape and it screams the type of coast I must love and my favourite sort of area well. Going back to colours of the landscape thinking and that addictive spring time green is really there in the landscape in the vegetation. But so also is the blossom, I was desperate to get some blossom onto the calendar during my best ever spring for it this one and so many photos I’ve taken of it especially locally but I just couldn’t seem to fit any in so I gave one a day box taken just three days before this actually. But at the eleventh hour I did manage to find one that subtly snuck blossom in, two in fact as its in the Martin Down cover collage photo from my last post taken the end of that week. That week and that day I took an incredible number of photos and so many of those coastal. I had to compare this to lots of others to nab that place on the calendar and I felt it was stronger than them all including some the same day, one of my most memorable landscape pictures so far this year exactly what picking my calendars are all about so I was glad to get it on.
September: Stormy beach scene at Holkham in Norfolk taken during that September 2020 holiday
This holiday last year was to some extent a week of two weather halves with the hotter and sunnier weather replaced but not entirely unexpected going in late September stormy, windy and in places wet weather. I remember clearly being on the beach seeing maybe the darkest sky ever move closer and closer to the shore, I just could not resist snapping away and trying to capture this phenomenon really. I took so many over the beach area and I took one similar to this which had the added flair of some horse riders in shot but I felt this one worked better for the calendar. I don’t think I’ve ever photographed stormy and pre-rain weather like this, and I think it would be so hard to recreate ever being in the right place at the right time on that beautiful, flat, distinctive and characteristic Norfolk beach and the sun shining too. What an amazing time to be there and we luckily got back to the car just as the winds had blown in this storm. One of the absolute key days of my trip and most memorable moments with us doing a bit across Norfolk that day I feel such nostalgia and precious memories flooding back as I write this. I knew it was popular right from that week as the other very similar photo was one of the winners of a theme in one of the photography groups we are in that week, I thought it was one of my standout photos of the trip and year as it appeared in my landscape end of year photo tweets where I say these are four of my favourite pictures in a category to take that year. This photo is definitely that standout landscape from 2020 for me, one of my best landscapes ever to take I feel up there with my pictures of Hatchet Pond in the New Forest in 2013, Boscastle, Cornwall in 2014, Sky at Pennington in 2015, Bala Lake in Snowdonia, Wales in 2016, sunlight reedbed at RSPB Radipole Lakes in Dorset in 2017, the snowy highland vistas at Coignafearn and Loch Garten especially on our 2018 Scotland trip and also in Scotland colourful rock and blue sea at St. Abb’s Head during our 2019 Nortumberland week on a day trip all pictures which I can visualise instantly and stick in my mind so much.
October: Yellow autumn leaves at Lakeside taken in November 2020
Like blossom this year autumn leaves last year I had my best ever year for being out in the landscape every day and seeing the festival of colour come as the year shut down. This photo actually taken the same day as the sky one which is on May on this calendar as mentioned in my last post so what a day that was! I just had to get autumn leaves onto this calendar and I love the simplicity of this one with the bright yellow against the really bright blue of the sky this is what autumn is all about for me and I found this so beautiful and had to capture it. I have such a connection to these trees at Lakeside I usually marvel at them going red but they went yellow this year and through working at home I found out I can see these trees from my room I just looked at them now to see how they’re doing in spring so it was great to get these on.
November: Devil’s finger mushroom near Bolton’s Bench in the New Forest taken in November 2020
October and November 2020 are very well represented on my calendars for 2022 both were incredible months for me with so many smashing sunny pictures. This one wasn’t so sunny but secured a mushroom picture being on my calendar again which I always love to do if I can and I found it strong and memorable. It also has a good history for me as it appeared in the Hampshire Chronicle through me being a member of their camera club Facebook group something I’ve had happen a fair bit from last spring onwards with me putting a lot in the club and this is the only one so far I’ve then gone onto place on a calendar of mine. This was a mushroom I’d wanted to see for years and it was a true goal achieved in 2020 seeing this quirky and interesting mushroom. I was so happy when we saw it just before a second lockdown and it was a great chance for a macro image I’d never taken before in my best ever year of fungi on a quite charming walk in the amazing and so wild New Forest. This is an image showing off some great bright colour which really sticks in my mind.
December: Reflections at Lower Test, Hampshire taken in November 2020
Last but not least, this was one I instantly knew I wanted on the calendar, it was successful in my 2020 end of year posts too. What a way to mark such a gorgeous sunny winter’s day one that sticks in my mind so much for number of photos taken and what a pleasant walk starting in the morning it was. It was cloudy in the afternoon I believe so that worked out well and personally I have other happy memories of things that happened that day in my other interests too. I was so pleased with this one, these last three photos all representing my minority subjects photos I don’t think I’ve had so many on a calendar before but reflections, fungi and autumn leaves were subjects I photographed so much over the last year so I was pleased to get them all on. This is one of my best ever reflections photos I think but also one of my best ever photos I think I just like it so much and am really proud of this one and such a beautiful scene it is.
Well that’s all my calendar reveals complete now! What a project this has been in my quieter moments. Thank you for all your incredible support for these posts. I sit back or rather walk on and relax and enjoy the spring and summer months now time to create more memories and work towards the end of year posts when we get there. In a calendar post sense, other than maybe some phone pictures of them once these are made on my social medai, see you next year! I do have just one more post though as I said half on hour on from when this posted, the reserve photos on this calendar.

E13 (“LIGHTS OUT”): Day 1, around 10/20/2020
explanations for the dates are under the cut!
Things to keep in mind:
The B/C-plots, for the most part, are not included in the calculation of the times here, because they rarely have the same number of days as the A-plot.
I didn’t take weekends into consideration unless otherwise noted. There is a weekend squad, but we know that the regular detectives also sometimes work weekends (enough so that on more than one occasion, Holt has rewarded them with “weekends off”).
Time-stamps within the episode are used as guidelines, but not always as the rule, unless there is a specific number of days given.
7x01-early 7x06 all have to happen in June so that they can start The Amy Way in July. Please refer to 7x06 for the explanation for the dates on these episodes.
Season 6 Finale: 5/8-5/15/2019
Has to start and end on a Wednesday; two or more weeks must pass until 7x02.
7x01:  6/6/2019
As per Amy's period in Trying, it has to be at the beginning of the month.
Continuity: Since patrol cops spend “6 months on the same beat,” which Holt is still doing in December, assume that when Debbie says it’s his first week on the job,” she means his current beat.
Continuity: her period technically is supposed to start somewhere between 6/2 and 6/7. Assume when she says it’s “late,” she means by just a few days. After all, for the July calendar to be accurate, it can’t be late by more than a week.
7x02: 6/7-6/10/2019
Day 1 – cold open // Day 2 – they meet Cpt. Kim // Day 3 – Party // Day 4 – last scene
Kim got an “email from two weeks ago” from Wunch. Cold-open is on 6/7, a Friday (because Rosa has the weekend off and, therefore, wouldn’t be there to meet Wunch on Day 2 of the episode). The timestamp on the last scene—Day 4—says that it's a Monday.
7x03: 6/18-6/27/2019
Day 1, 6/18 - cold open
Day 2, 6/19 - visit Pimento’s doctor; Pimento spends the night at Charles’s
Day 3, 6/20 - HR seminar + Pimento in hospital
Day 10: “One Week Later” from Day 3.
Per the cold-open, Amy is ovulating during this episode. Also, Jimmy Jabs are on 6/21.
Continuity: The Masked Singer finale/premiere dates don’t make sense. But the contestant they mentioned didn’t even exist in season 1 of TMS, so it’s excusable.
Continuity: The last scene takes place during “Trying.” Roll with it.
7x04: 6/21/2019
14 days since Rosa last took a vacation—7x02—and a Friday because Amy skips a seminar that was probably wasn’t scheduled for a weekend.
Continuity: Rosa and Jocelyn had apparently been dating “a year” at this point. It was probably shorter than that.
Continuity: This episode most likely takes place before Trying: Jake mentions Amy being more, erm, adventurous now that they’re trying to conceive, and that doesn’t really fit in with the overly-scheduled sex UD-ing that was happening from July 2019 and onwards. Plus, the stress/potential injury that such a competition would bring definitely doesn’t fit in with The Amy Way.
7x05: 6/22-6/23/2019
Debbie steals the cocaine at end of 7x04; assume 7x05 is the day after. The final scene is the day after the rest of the episode.
Continuity: They mention Debbie’s journals from “this year,” and specify that they were written on “August 21.” Assume this means August 2018.
7x06: 6/24/19 - late January 2020
On the calendars in the war room, “Menstruation” lasts about five days and starts around the 4th of every month; “Ovulation” starts around the 15th of every month and lasts about a week. Amy presumably took a pregnancy test at the very end of every month—not only were these scenes always followed by calendar flips, but she would have to take the tests at least two weeks after ovulation but before she got her period.
The calendar invites/The Jake Way happen in June—so Amy still has to be ovulating at the start of the episode—because they start The Amy Way in July.
The Amy Way fails for the last time in December. The pregnancy test she takes before Hitchcock announces that his girlfriend is pregnant was late December (around 12/30). The next test she would take—the last scene in the episode—would be late January (around 1/30).
Assuming it isn’t a false positive (which is unlikely, considering her doctor would have double-checked this before putting her on fertility medication), the earliest she can get pregnant would be mid-February.
7x07: lasts about a week and ends mid-March 2020.
Has to be after 2/14 but before 4/12, based on Holt’s uniform changes in Valloweaster.
It’s very likely that Amy’s just a few weeks pregnant here since she wasn’t suspicious at all until her doctor brought it up; if the hormones messed up her cycle a bit and she got pregnant mid to late-February, she was 3-4 weeks pregnant in this episode and wouldn’t have noticed until taking the test.
Continuity: I’m assuming that the “Ebola Doctor” was Craig Spencer. He contracted the virus in 2014, so “six years ago” makes sense.
7x08: 3/27-3/30/2020.
Since it’s Holt’s first day back, this episode is relatively soon after 7x07, but with a week or two in between to account for paperwork and official promotion procedures.
Day 1: Friday (The bachelor’s party is over the weekend)
Day 2: Saturday (heist)
Judy’s friends were clearly arrested at nighttime, and that + the change of clothing indicates that Jake and the Judy’s had to have come home the next day.
Day 3: Sunday (Jake comes home)
Day 4: Monday (last scene)
Continuity: The screen on the computer that one of Judy’s men hacks into says “Last Login: March 27 2015.″ Since this episode obviously takes place in 2020, just ignore that.
7x09: ~4/10/2020
Earlier than June—Terry’s kids are still in school (Spring Semester). Also probably(?) a Friday, since Terry’s kids have a concert and it’s unlikely they’ll have one in the middle of the week.
The Friday before Easter (7x11) is April 10.
7x10: Mid-May 2020 (cold open), ~6/17/2020, 6/26/2020-6/27/2020
Cold-Open: pregnancy reveal and end of 1st trimester.
Day 2: Jake tells his father that they’re having a sex-reveal party “Next Friday,” indicating two Fridays after this day. Therefore, this conversation happened around June 17, 2020 (The Wednesday that is approximately 18 weeks from mid-February).
Day 3: Friday, Day of the party (June 26)
Day 4: Amy finds out; day after Day 3 (June 27)
Continuity: The entirety of 7x11 takes place before this one.
7x11: 10/31/19, 2/14/20, and 4/12-4/13/2020
7x12: Day 1-Day 3, Mid-8/2020
Day 1: Cold Open
Day 2: find cheddar
Day 3: B- and C-plots end
Shakespeare in the Park is usually held in Prospect Park over the summer. Halfway between 7x10 and 7x13 is the end of August; I made it mid-August so it’s still technically “Summer.”
Continuity: Amy’s only 6 months pregnant in this episode and her baby shower is the weekend after. However, in season 5, Gina also had her baby shower at around 5/6 months, so this isn’t unusual for these characters. Plus, this is Amy we’re talking about—she probably had a registry ready to go within days of finding out about the pregnancy.
7x13: Day 1, late-10/2020.
The elevator expiry is listed as 12/20/2020 and it was inspected “4 months ago.” elevators in New York are inspected every 6 months, which means that the last inspection was 6/20/2020 and it is now (mid to late-)October.
Later in the month (10/20/2020* or later) matches up with Amy getting pregnant in mid-February: her due-date would be mid-November, and it makes sense for her to start maternity leave about 3 weeks beforehand.
Continuity: Amy going on leave so early explains why she didn’t have a maternity bag stashed somewhere in the precinct—we all know that she would have had one had she been working right up to her due date. Also, although Amy’s FOMOW would make her want to stay at the precinct right up until she gave birth, if her doctor recommended her to take rest earlier (which is likely, given how stressful/strenuous her job is…), she would have followed those orders properly.
Thank you to @feeisamarshmallow for talking through this with me!
* baby Mac could definitely be either a Libra or a Scorpio :)

How to Watch (F1) Formula 1 Live Stream Online Free
Get the latest (F1) update on Formula 1 live streaming for free race grand prix online, schedules, date and timing and more information.
The 2021 F1 season is off to in inauspicious start before it even begins. The season-opening Australian Grand Prix — which originally was scheduled for March 21, has been moved to the back of the season and is now set for Nov. 21, 2021.
That would make the Bahrain Grand Prix the first race of the 2021 Formula 1 Live season on Sunday, March 28.
The Chinese Grand Prix also have been moved to a date to be determined, due to ongoing travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Discussions on when that race could be run are ongoing, F1 says. Meanwhile, look for the Italian Grand Prix at Imola in that April 18 slot.
From there, if all goes according to plan — and it certainly feels a little odd typing that sentence given the state of things — the series would wrap up Dec. 5, 2021, back where it closed out the 2020 season, in Abu Dhabi.
The updated 2021 F1 race calendar now looks as follows:
Here’s a 2020 F1 event breakdown courtesy of FIA. Check your streaming site of choice for times. Dates listed here may be subject to change.

Fandom Giftbox - A Low Key Fandom Event
Hey y'all! I wanted to boost an event that's happening right now over on Dreamwidth that anyone can join! If you have no idea what Dreamwidth is, that's okay! The gist is that it is a journaling/semi social media site. It's based off of LiveJournal (which you may have been a part of or missed completely).
To participate, you will need to join the site. It's easy! And then once you've joined, you can be easily lured into participating in even more and more events there. There's been a lot said by people better versed than I on how to get acclimated to using Dreamwidth, so I won't get into detail here. You just need an account to be able to follow the event community & to submit your comments.
So what's this event?
Probably should get into that, yeah!?
Fandom Giftbox is a multi-fandom, anyone is invited event where people will gift you drabbles, icons, fanart, or anything else under the sun. Of course you should also be gifting to others as well. It's a nice, warm feeling to drop off a few fills and then open up your own "box" on the reveal day to see what others have thoughtfully given to you! There are just a few stages to the event.
I just want to emphasize, this is open to literally any fandom. Including Original Works. Want more cryptid/cryptozoologist action? You can request it here.
1. Sign Ups
Enter a comment on the 2020 Sign Up post. Be sure to include the General Signup and as many Fandom Signups as you feel like filling out. Three fandoms is the minimum. I've seen people put in as many as 10-12.
2. Fill Giftboxes
Once the boxes are opened, you can browse through the tags on the lefthand side of the journal or on that year's Request by Fandom posts (once they've been created). Look for at least one where you can create something for the recipient. But by all means go hog-wild and fill as many as you'd like. Again, the more that people gift, the more that everyone gets!
Fills are submitted by adding comments to the person's box. They will be "moderated" which just means that the recipient won't see them until they're revealed.
Fun fact! Mods will monitor to see if any giftboxes are "Needy" and empty. Towards the end of the fill stages, a list of these Needy boxes will be available. The goal is for everyone to get at least one fill.
3. Giftboxes revealed!
You get to look through all the fills on your box (and anyone else's). The warm and fuzzies, they are so nice.
So like... what can I give? Or what am I going to get?
Fills will have to follow the "Wants" and "DNWs" (Do not Wants) that are included in the sign-up phase. DNWs have to be followed. Prompts are just suggestions though. So if you ask for Harry/Draco with a prompt for an Auror AU, you may not get the AU. But you would get Harry/Draco.
Same logic follows for the type of fill. There's a sample list of media on the sign-up sheet for what are common fills - "Any, Fanfiction, Fanart (Drawn/Digital), Graphics (Icons, Wallpapers, Manips, Banners), Fanmixes, Fanvids, Meta, Recs, Podfic, Fan Music". If you really don't want to get anything other than fanfic, you are more than welcome to say just that. Just note it might make it harder for people to fill if you are too picky.
What's the timeline of this?
You can see the official timeline on the Fandom Giftbox page, but here's the schedule as of 4 Jun 2020:
Sign Ups Open: May 31st, 2020 Sign Ups Close: June 21st, 2020 (No earlier than 11:59pm EST) Giftbox Posting Begins: June 7th, 2020 Giftbox Posting Finished: on or before June 26th, 2020 Request Spreadsheet Finished: on or before June 28th, 2020 Fandom Entries Up: on or before July 5th, 2020 Empty/Underfilled Giftbox Requests Begin: by Sunday, July 19th, 2020 AO3 Collection/DW Comments Revealed: Sunday, September 6th, 2020 (No earlier than 11:59pm EST)
What should I do while I'm waiting for the event to start?
What a great question. Why don't you check out the DW Fandom Calendar and see if there's anything else up your alley happening soon? You can also try out some of the neat features on DW like Access-Locked journals for only close friends to see your updates, finding new people via Interest Search, or checking out Latest Things to see if anyone's journal is interesting enough for you to consider Subscribing too. Don't forget to Subscribe to Fandom Giftbox, too, so that it'll show up on your Reading Page (which is like a very slow moving Dashboard).
And don't forget to give a wave to me on there if you'd like! I give access to most people so long as we're from the same circles :)

Free Vic School Holiday Calendar
VIC School Holidays: If one thing is missed about school days the most once we grow up is occasions. Truly, you heard that right! School occasions mean boundless enjoyment, family trips, sitting idle, no schoolwork and no classes. Each child anticipates occasions in the educational time, so they can do all that they love, particularly it is the best time to go on family trips and invest some energy with your friends and family. Particularly, in a nation like Australia, where you have plenty of excellent spots and towns to visit not having an outing in your educational time is something you don't need. Besides, guardians look ahead of time to think about the school occasions, so they can design something unique for their child during that time.
School occasions are regularly set apart according to the details of the school. Each school should have terms that are isolated in the year, in which you have classes, tests, and occasions too. Casual theater lovers might think that there’s nothing else happening beside the Tony Awards in June. They would be wrong!
June calendar of theater openings: Stonewall 50 on Stages! Fairview Returns!
Still they are the only theater award that remains in this exhausting theater awards season. It’s certainly been a busy five weeks since the 2019 Tony nominations were announced, and a happy one, judging by photographs like the one below. Three of the five nominees for the Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Play are smiling together at the Tony Honors cocktail party, one of a seemingly endless series of events that will be coming to an end with the ceremony this Sunday.
What’s intriguing is how much the Tonys seem split this year in half, between what you can call downtown and uptown — conventional versus experimental. More on this in the days ahead. (Sorry!)

More or Less I Am in Fort Greene Park
More Or Less I Am
A decade ago, theater director and educator Karin Coonrod conceived “More Or Less I Am,” a musical theater piece drawn from Walt Whitman’s 1855 poem “Song of Myself.” Her theater company, Compagnia de’ Colombari, has been presenting it around the city ever since, and especially during the week of the poet’s 200th birthday
Underground Railroad Game
Out of  a surreal childhood memory of being forced to re-enact the Civil War as a game in fifth grade, Scott Sheppard and co-creator Jennifer Kidwell have fashioned a captivating work of theater that is bravely acted, inventively designed, and relentlessly surprising — dizzying in its anarchic turns from playful to hateful, satiric to sadistic.
Play On Festival
The Play On! Festival is presenting staged readings through June 30 of all 39 of William Shakespeare’s plays “translated” into “contemporary modern English” by 36 American playwrights.
Dying City Colin Woodell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Dying City
Christopher Shinn’s “Dying City,” which was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in Drama after it received an admired production at Lincoln Center in 2007, is being revived Off-Broadway at Second Stages at the same time that there is a Broadway production of Lanford Wilson’s older play “Burn This,”  which it resembles in several ways. Both focus on a kind of unconventional love triangle involving two brothers. In both plays, one of the brothers is gay, and one of the brothers is dead. (The gay brother is the dead one in “Burn This”; the gay one is the one still living in “Dying City.”) Both also explore the effects of a death on the people left behind. But “Dying City” has a more ambitious and more stealth agenda – to bring us into a world not just of grief but of trauma.
What they also have in common is that neither revival quite works for me, for what feel like opposite reasons.

Film Festival Contradictions & COVID-Responses
Tumblr media
There’s a strange contradiction to Film Festivals endemic to their very existence.
Intended to enliven a sense of community and appreciation of a form on as large a canvas as possible more so than any traditional cinema screening, they are also a celebration of a medium very suited and highly adaptable to home-centric, individualised experience and COVID-circumstance.
A boon of Festivals both in attendance and their own numeracy predictably followed the wider availability of streaming services and stratification of cinema offerings between mega-budget and indie fare. Film fans typically wanted a curated experience of competent, experimental small to mid-budget fare and Festivals remain the place to get them, as well as a space more open to audible applause and sharing thoughts before, after and better yet between screenings.
At the same time, cinema remains a form not best appreciated but highly accessible outside an orpheum, making it better suited than other cultural touchstones, ala White Night, Vivid, to enjoyment amidst a pandemic.
Some Festivals have chosen to go online, pursue hybrid models or otherwise postpone. Static Vision and the Taiwan Film Festival in light of their particular audiences and more experimental filmic fare, itself in cases a commentary on digital consumption, made the early decision to go online following the recent case rise across Australia, as the Festivals managed in 2020.
On the other side of the equation Cinema Reborn, dedicated to showcasing minute restorations of cinema classics on some of Sydney’s largest screens, were the first Festival to postpone for a full 12 months in 2020. Australia’s Silent Film Festival has similarly postponed recent events and repeatedly so until October when screenings can intendedly take place in the State Library. The St Kilda Film Festival, in addition to postponements of weeks past, have put off this Saturday’s regional Camperdown event and the Antenna Documentary Film Festival have delayed the impending October program until February.
In any assessment of whether to postpone, go online or pursue a mixed approach every current Festival has to balance two factors; to what extent is a cinema experience intrinsic to appreciation of the work(s) and does the existing sense of community once engendered and further anticipated by patrons necessitate either or both of an indeterminate (and at this stage it is indeterminate) future in-person event or more immediate digital offering?
These decisions aren’t just about maintaining artistic lifeblood but given these considerations’ impacts on both maximising and sustaining audience engagement they are also fairly of a related and necessarily commercial nature.
The Sydney Underground Film Festival, focused in part on commentary on digital forms, yesterday announced that the planned September 10-12 run will head online from September 9-26 with the third annual Take48 filmmaking weekend and competition to run entirely online. It will join the Irish Film Festival, likewise in its second annual digital-only run, which screens from September 1-12.
On Wednesday the Made in the West Film Festival ran an online networking event for filmmakers in Sydney’s west ahead of an in-person December 10-12 Festival. Hours before, the Adelaide Film Festival Youth (previously the Adelaide International Youth Film Festival), having postponed their in-person July 25-30 program announced that the Festival will run online and in-person from August 25 – September 8 and then September 15-16 respectively.
Cancelling an in-person pre-event scheduled for this Sunday past, Brisbane’s West End Film Festival, intended to run in-person from Wednesday through today, has instead pivoted to online for the first time and only a day later than its anticipated start; offering films online until now August 31.
Queensland’s Capricorn Film Festival, having postponed multiple physical events in the two years past while running a one-off online event in 2020, will champion a three-day virtual Festival commencing next Friday. The day prior the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will commence a planned in-person run from August 12-21, overlapping with a virtual, Australia-wide Festival online from August 15-30.
The Melbourne Documentary Film Festival, previously postponing the planned Jul 21-31 in-person run set to tie in with a streaming program running the length of July, will now present a physical event from September 7-17.
More prominent still, the Melbourne International Film Festival, originally scheduled to commence an in-person run this week to be followed by and overlap with a streaming program, has pivoted to jump-start a nation-wide streaming schedule commencing 9AM today through August 22 following the digital premiere of Coda yesterday evening.  An intended in-person run initially set to take place from August 13-22 will be subject to a flagged pending announcement from MIFF early next week in light of the lockdown implemented in Victoria commencing yesterday evening. Switching to a wholly online run in August of last year and seeing record attendance rates, MIFF in 2021, reflective of increased engagement, has too for the first time scheduled multiple events in new regional venues.
Occurring when it did last year, Melbourne audiences even beyond traditional Film and Festival fans were primed for a major Melbourne cultural event absent the ability to travel very far or at all, and MIFF provided. Irrespective of the impact of current or future COVID-related restrictions on the in-person program MIFF have championed and effectively utilised capacity to reach audiences digitally for the duration of the intended 2021 run.
This contrasts heavily with this week’s Sydney Film Festival announcement of the postponement of an in-person Festival until November 3-14. This follows the Festival’s physical cancellation in 2020, an online event in June of last year alongside participation in an international digital event, a brief physical run in January of 2021, the scheduling of this year’s physical Festival for August 18-29 rather than a traditional June run following a like shift in the scheduling of major international Festivals (and consequentially select titles’ availabilities) and the July postponement of a full program launch set to follow an already announced handful of titles.
Aside from the impact on SFF itself, this will directly affect the slew of Film Festivals which typically take place in early November including the Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival which is currently scheduled for November 4-13, with the previous June to August shift already impacting a number of Festivals who prioritise the August window. Notably advertising campaigns run in recent months have emphasised the Festival holding a physical event as a priority with Festival Director Nashen Moodley noting in 2020 that SFF “do not currently have plans for an online component in future years (and that) the Festival very much looks forward to seeing our audience in cinemas next year for a fully immersive and connected Sydney Film Festival.”
An assessment of this a sensible decision or not comes down to whether the near exclusive appeal of the Festival is in fact in-cinema offerings and the extent to which the SFF audience are seeking forthcoming over in-person engagement.
The response to last year’s online SFF program demonstrated a desire amongst its audience, more of whom than any other Australian Film Festival except perhaps MIFF are composed of such significant numbers of both dedicated and casual filmgoers, for not just engagement but consistent engagement whichever the form. SFF’s decision to host an online component last year followed months later by successful physical sessions bore scope for replication in the latter half of 2021 and moreover over one or more calendar windows.
Sydneysiders and film fans right now across the country are seeking a sense of community denied in forms by current COVID-related restrictions and SFF could have borne that same significance MIFF heralded when faced with such a similar circumstance in now successive years. MIFF, making the decision to go online last year and again in 2021 unlike SFF, continues to recognise the potential to grow its audience (as MIFF has done) and reach film fans in rural and regional areas and/or who are immunocompromised and might not have in months past or otherwise in the immediate future sought out a physical Festival. This is moreover the case in light of yesterday’s announcement impacting Victoria incidentally coinciding to the hour with the commencement of MIFF’s digital run.
SFF could too have run in June as traditional but as delayed permitted the attainment of select titles that make up a fraction of a typical program. The appeal of this particular Festival, ala MIFF, overly relates to its general curatorial breadth and sense of community as opposed to individual showcases and the platform’s decision-making has not prioritised the aforementioned with many creatives now too directly impacted. Rather than a few films and filmmakers it is a plethora thereof of both name and emerging talents that have continuously proven themselves both artistic and commercial life-bloods of the Festival. To the extent that there was such an overly marquee focus rather than artistic emphasis on the heft of talent and fixtures of the kind that overwhelmingly typify and further both SFF’s creative and commercial bona-fides the outlet has shown many filmmakers concerned and fans too no favour.
Yes some filmmakers prefer and demand as is their right films to premiere or otherwise screen in particular environments but the extent to which the Festival in the current environment did not account for this when negotiating titles or otherwise prioritise to a requisite degree fixtures which could screen wholly digitally in the immediate term represents an omission as it would for any Festival neglecting to fully anticipate audiences’ demand to go ahead in part or entirely online and avail itself where affordable of digital infrastructure as needed.
Following the Festival having gone online last year with works not ideal but adaptable to the form via willing filmmakers there remains evident desire and certainly scope for the platform to replicate something similar in 2021 with the announced titles alone representing a sizeable draw. Communication on this front has been notably lacking with the Festival previously indicating on their dedicated site that SFF had been postponed and withdrawing the statement once it was reported on. This was too days before any further public clarification which came at the outset via select media’s positive reporting of the Festival’s call.
Such calls in recent months engendering the lack of momentum for the Festival and sidelining thereof represents an absence affecting appended-filmmakers as well as dedicated and casual film fans alike seeking consistent and meaningful engagement who can and should, in addition to whenever the Festival screens and in any case, seek out other outlets who have taken the opportunity.

WHAT IS THE GOLD CUP? Held every two years, the Gold Cup is the regional championship for Concacaf, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football. Just like in the European Championships and Copa America, lifting the trophy brings prestige and regional supremacy. Over the course of 15 previous Gold Cup tournaments, the United States has lifted the trophy six times (1991, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017), just behind all-time leaders Mexico with eight (1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019). Canada is the only other tournament champion, coming away with the title in 2000.
Placed in Group B, the U.S. opens the tournament against 2019 semifinalists Haiti on July 11, faces Martinique on July 15 and wraps up the group stage against Canada on July 18. The top two teams in each of the four groups advance to the quarterfinals (July 24-25 in Arlington, Texas and Glendale, Ariz.). The semifinals are scheduled for July 29 in Austin and Houston, before the championship match on Aug. 1 in Las Vegas.
ROAD TO VEGAS BEGINS In the middle of a jam-packed 2021 schedule, the Gold Cup provides an opportunity for the USMNT to pick up its second regional trophy of the summer. In June, the USA clinched the inaugural Concacaf Nations League title with a thrilling extra-time victory against Mexico, and now the U.S. will look to take home more hardware at the confederation championship.
This year’s competition takes on additional importance as the USMNT’s final gathering before 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying kicks off in September. The tournament will provide invaluable experience against Concacaf opposition in a high-pressure environment as 12 players have the chance to compete in official competition for the USA for the first time.
DEVELOPING THE PLAYER POOL Nineteen of the 23 players on the Gold Cup roster weren’t a part of the USMNT’s Nations League roster, providing an almost entirely new group of players exposure to high-level Concacaf competition. This experience is essential as World Cup qualifying kicks off in the fall, especially with a new format that includes more games over a shorter period of time. Eight teams will compete for three berths to the World Cup during the course of seven months rather than 18, and four of five international windows will include teams playing three matches in seven days, meaning depth will be critical.
Five players will aim to earn their first USMNT cap at the Gold Cup - Gianluca Busio, Matthew Hoppe, Donovan Pines, James Sands and Eryk Williamson - while seven others are looking to make their first appearance in official competition: George Bello, Daryl Dike, Nicholas Gioacchini, Shaq Moore, Miles Robinson, Matt Turner and Sam Vines.
EXPERIENCED CORE Despite arriving in Kansas City with a roster that averages just under 25 years of age, the USMNT brings six players who have Gold Cup titles under their belts: Brad Guzan and Sean Johnson (2 each), Kellyn Acosta, Paul Arriola, Cristian Roldan, and Gyasi Zardes (1 each). Three more bring prior experience at the tournament: Reggie Cannon, Jonathan Lewis and Walker Zimmerman.
Midfielder Sebastian Lletget is the only USMNT player to appear in all 11 of the team’s matches over the last two calendar years and is tied for the team’s goal-scoring lead this year with three tallies.
BACK HOME IN KC Born and raised in Overland Park, Kan., forward Nicholas Gioacchini is returning home for the first time since the age of eight, when his family moved to Italy. After a spell in Maryland, the Gioacchinis moved back to Europe and Nicholas launched his pro soccer career with Paris FC in 2017 before moving to Caen, his current club, the following year. The forward made his international debut and scored his first two USA goals in the 6-2 win against Jamaica in November and now will look to make his mark during the Gold Cup group stage in his hometown.
CANNON AIMS FOR ANOTHER TROPHY Defender Reggie Cannon is fresh off of a big June with the USMNT, helping the team lift the Concacaf Nations League trophy and scoring his first international goal in the friendly against Costa Rica. After playing a key role for the USA during the 2019 Gold Cup, Cannon made the move overseas to Portuguese club Boavista and is confident that he’s raised his game as he aims for his second regional title of the summer.  Listen to the USMNT defender speak with Jordan Angeli and Charlie Davies on this week’s episode of The U.S. Soccer Podcast.
LAST TIME OUT The USMNT played four matches during the June international window, attempting to simulate the cadence of the new World Cup qualifying format. Sebastian Lletget struck first for the USA vs. Switzerland in the team’s first match, but the U.S. fell 2-1. In the Nations League, a hard-fought 1-0 semifinal win vs. Honduras set the stage for an instant classic USA-Mexico match in the Concacaf Nations League Final, a dramatic 3-2 victory.
WATCH: USMNT Defeats Costa Rica 4-0 | June 9, 2021
The USMNT capped off the international break with an emphatic 4-0 win against Costa Rica that saw both Cannon and forward Daryl Dike net their first international goals. With the result, the USA has won its last 10 matches against Concacaf opponents, a promising trend heading into the confederation championship.
Gold Cup roster members Kellyn Acosta, Cannon, Lletget and Jackson Yueill were all a part of the USA’s Nations League squad, while Dike and Zimmerman both appeared in the friendly vs. Costa Rica. Hoppe was a part of the USMNT matchday squad vs. Switzerland.
USA ROSTER NOTES Players on the roster average 13 caps overall and five caps in official competition.
Nineteen of the 23 players represent a total of 13 different clubs in Major League Soccer. Atlanta United and Colorado Rapids lead the way with three players each, followed by D.C. United, New York City FC (2 each); Columbus Crew, LA Galaxy, Nashville SC, New England Revolution, Orlando City SC, Portland Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders and Sporting Kansas City (1 each).
Defenders Reggie Cannon (Boavista; Portugal) and Shaq Moore (Tenerife; Spain) and forwards Nicholas Gioacchini (Caen; France) and Matthew Hoppe (Schalke; Germany) make up the European-based contingent.
Sporting KC midfielder Gianluca Busio and NYCFC defender James Sands are the two players on the roster to earn their first USMNT call-ups. Sands turned 21 on July 6, the day of his first USMNT training session.
Shaq Moore earns his first USMNT call-up since November 2018. With five international appearances to his name, the 24-year-old right back comes to his first camp under Gregg Berhalter after making 41 league appearances with Tenerife during the 2020-21 Spanish Segunda campaign.
A veteran of the USA’s 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup side, Moore last appeared in the USMNT’s 1-0 defeat to Italy on Nov. 20, 2018 in Genk, Belgium.
Gyasi Zardes’ team-leading 16 Gold Cup caps currently place him in a tie with Kyle Beckerman and Pablo Mastroeni for 10th on the USMNT's all-time Gold Cup appearances list.
Since 2018, Zardes leads all U.S.-eligible players in MLS with 47 goals. The veteran striker also sits eighth all-time on the USMNT's Gold Cup scoring list with four goals.
Midfielder Cristian Roldan made his international debut during the 2017 Gold Cup, starting the team's 3-2 win against Martinique on July 12, 2017, in Tampa. The USA will play Martinique on July 15, three days after the four-year anniversary of that match.
USMNT AT THE GOLD CUP Beginning with the inaugural title in 1991, the U.S. has lifted the Gold Cup on six occasions. The USA returned the trophy home in 2002 and won again in 2005, 2007, 2013 and 2017.

The USA has made it to the semifinals in 14 out of 15 tournaments, missing out only in 2000.
USA-HAITI The USMNT is 6-6-5 against Haiti all-time. Les Grenadiers are one of only two Concacaf teams against which the USA does not hold a winning record – the other is Mexico.
The USA is unbeaten in its last five matches (3-0-2) vs. Haiti and undefeated in three Gold Cup meetings with the Caribbean nation (2-0-1).
The U.S. and Haiti last met in the 2015 Gold Cup group stage in Foxborough, Mass., a 1-0 win for the USA. Gyasi Zardes teed up Clint Dempsey for the lone goal just after halftime to help the USMNT secure the top spot in Group A.
Their first meeting came in qualifying for the 1954 World Cup, with two victories for the USA in Port-au-Prince on the strength of goals scored by National Soccer Hall of Famers Bill Looby and Efrain Chacurian.

IN FOCUS: HAITI Haiti earned its berth to the 2021 Gold Cup as one of three preliminary qualifiers. Prior to the tournament proper, 12 teams gathered in Ft. Lauderdale and played out three four-team brackets to determine the competition’s final three entrants.
The top seed in the Gold Cup prelims, Haiti topped Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 6-1 in its opening match with Duckens Nazon bagging a brace.
In the Gold Cup berth-clinching match vs. Bermuda, Les Grenadiers used a first-half hat trick from Frantzdy Pierrot to win 4-1 and advance to its eighth confederation championship.
Nazon (26 goals) and Pierrot (14 goals) are the leading scorers on the roster and have combined for 13 goals this year. Nazon’s 49 caps also lead the team.
Haiti had an impressive showing at the 2019 Gold Cup, reaching the tournament semifinals for its highest finish. The Haitians topped their group with three straight victories and came from behind to beat Canada in the quarterfinals before losing to Mexico on a penalty in extra time.
Haiti is 8-11-5 all-time at the Gold Cup. The Carribean nation has advanced past the group stage in four of seven previous appearances.
Former Haiti defender Jean-Jacques Pierre became Haiti’s head coach at the start of 2021 and has led the team to a 5-2-0 record entering the Gold Cup. It’s his first major coaching job after a long playing career across Argentina, France, Greece, Haiti and Uruguay.
Five players are based in the USA, highlighted by Columbus Crew midfielder Derrick Etienne Jr., a teammate of U.S. forward Gyasi Zardes. Goalkeeper Bryan Sylvestre (Miami FC), midfielder Zachary Herivaux (Birmingham Legion) and forward Ronaldo Damus (Orange County SC) play in the USL Championship, while defender Francois Dulysse plays in USL League One at New England Revolution II.

Sebastian Lletget captains the USMNT for the first time tonight. The 28-year-old midfielder is the 12th different player to wear the armband under head coach Gregg Berhalter.
Ten of 11 starters hail from Major League Soccer, with right back Shaq Moore (Tenerife; Spain) as the lone foreign-based player.
Moore is one of four players making their USMNT debuts in official competition tonight, joining goalkeeper Matt Turner and defenders Miles Robinson and Sam Vines.
Turner (eligible to represent Lithuania) and Moore (eligible to represent Trinidad and Tobago) will both become officially cap-tied to the USMNT once the opening whistle blows tonight.
Moore earns his first USMNT appearance since playing in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Italy on Nov. 20, 2018 in Genk, Belgium.
Kellyn Acosta, Sebastian Lletget and Jackson Yueill were all part of the U.S. roster during last month’s Concacaf Nations League triumph.

A midfielder with Sporting KC, Busio would have the opportunity of making his USMNT debut in his home club stadium.
Meanwhile, Gioacchini would get to represent the U.S. just 17 miles from where he grew up in Overland Park, Kansas.
Teams are allowed five substitutions during the group stage of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.
The USA holds an even 6-6-5 record in 17 all-time matches against Haiti. Les Grenadiers are one of two Concacaf nations the USMNT does not have a winning record against.
The USA is 2-0-1 against Haiti in Gold Cup play.
The USMNT is 20-6-3 in 29 matches under Gregg Berhalter.
The United States Men’s National Team opened up Group B play at the 2021 Gold Cup with a 1-0 victory over Haiti last night in Kansas City. It gave them 3 points to keep them on pace with Canada, who beat Martinique in the first match of the doubleheader. For the USMNT, there were some positives and some areas for improvement in a match where they seemed very sluggish at times and still have some questions to answer as they move forward in the tournament. Here’s what we learned.
No urgency on attack.
USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter was “disappointed” in the lack of urgency that the attack showed against Haiti, a team that entered the match with 5 of its players sidelined due to testing positive for Covid.
“I missed the urgency to score more goals and to be dangerous and first pass forward and aggressive,” Berhalter said during the post-match press conference. “To me, it was way too slow, way too backwards. Not enough intent to turn it around and get them get them defending in the penalty box. And then once we’re in the penalty box, I didn’t like the runs, the movement in the box. I didn’t like the service. So from the attacking end, we were disappointed with the intent that we showed tonight.”
The team didn’t have enough runs forward to sustain an attack. You had consistent play down the right side, particularly with Shaq Moore. Paul Arriola did well at times before he was forced off early in the first half due to injury. However, the left side of Jonathan Lewis and Sam Vines didn’t do enough to keep Haiti on their toes, despite Sam Vines scoring the lone goal for the Americans. The USMNT needed to gas out Haiti, who was short staffed and playing compact for most of the match to conserve energy. Instead, the Americans played right into Haiti’s game, and Haiti felt more comfortable withstanding any attack and trying to turn quick counters down the field when the American midfield would make a mistake.
Gianluca Busio showed why people should be very excited about his future.
The 19-year-old Italian American made his USMNT debut last night in front of his home fans in Kansas City when he subbed on for Jackson Yueill in the 62nd minute, and he certainly made an impression with his play. He played with confidence and was constantly looking to drive the attack forward. With every touch he took last night, the Children’s Mercy Park crowd of 12,664 cheered loudly, and he gave them reasons to do just that. He had a shot on goal late in the match that was an absolute laser that required an incredible save by Haitian goalkeeper Bryan Sylvestre, but Busio was a breath of fresh air on a night where the attack felt stagnant.
The winger depth chart has become super thin.
Hopefully, the injury to Paul Arriola is not a serious one, but even before that, Gregg Berhalter admitted that he didn’t have a lot of depth at the wings on this roster. Now, with Arriola having to sub off due to injury in the 14th minute of last night’s match, the winger group is even thinner. Nicholas Gioacchini replaced Arriola at right wing, and Daryl Dike eventually subbed on for Jonathan Lewis on the left wing. That’s 2 guys that normally operate as 9s for club and country. Matthew Hoppe, another 9, is also someone that Berhalter believes has the movement to play on one of the wings. So, who will start against Martinique on the wings remains to be seen, but with the focus on creating scoring opportunities already heightened for this group and with the lackluster effort last night, there will be more eyes on who Gregg Berhalter decides to play on that forward line as they progress in the Gold Cup.
Those are some of the things we learned. What did you take away from last night’s match? Hit the comments and discuss.
