The Berlin Cleopatra, a Roman sculpture of Cleopatra wearing a royal diadem, mid-1st century BC, now in the Altes Museum, Germany
—
The Enigma of Cleopatra: Modern Reconstructions and the Quest for Her True Appearance
If one thing is clear from various accounts and reconstructions of Cleopatra, it's that her allure went far beyond her physical appearance.
Cleopatra VII (70/69 BC – 10 August 30 BC), the last queen of Egypt, has been a character of fascination and intrigue for centuries.
Known for her intelligence, charm and political acumen, she was a woman who made a significant mark in a world dominated by men.
She was fluent in multiple languages, well-versed in politics, and an astute diplomat — traits that made her a formidable leader.
However, the question of her physical appearance, specifically her beauty, has always been a topic of debate.
Her true power lay in her intellect, her charm, and her political acumen.
Cleopatra’s ability to captivate and influence others was central to her rule.
She managed to form alliances with two of the most powerful Romans of the time — Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, which were crucial for the maintenance of her power in Egypt.
These alliances and the relationships she forged speak volumes about her charisma and ability to persuade.
One of most enduring portrayals of Cleopatra is that of a woman of unparalleled beauty.
This is a narrative that has been perpetuated by countless plays, movies and novels, most notably William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra.
However, the historical texts present a somewhat different picture.
Plutarch (c. AD 46 – after AD 119), a Greek biographer and essayist, made the earliest surviving description of Cleopatra in his work "Parallel Lives."
Interestingly, he doesn't dwell on her physical appearance but emphasizes her charismatic persona and intellectual prowess.
He notes that "her actual beauty, it is said, was not in itself so remarkable, but the attraction of her person and the character that attended all she said or did were something bewitching."
Cassius Dio (c. 165 – c. 23), another Roman historian, also focused more on Cleopatra's persuasive abilities and personal charm than her physical attractiveness.
These descriptions suggest that Cleopatra’s allure was not based solely, or even primarily, on her looks.
In contrast to the romanticized portrayals of Cleopatra, the extant artistic depictions and coinage of her profile provide a more realistic, albeit stylized, representation of her appearance.
Coins minted during Cleopatra's reign depict her with a prominent nose, a strong chin, and deep-set eyes.
Some historians believe that these coins were a deliberate political statement, indicating Cleopatra's desire to be seen as equal to her male counterparts.
Similarly, the few surviving statues and carvings of Cleopatra from the ancient world do not present an image of classical beauty.
The Berlin Cleopatra, a painted limestone statue from 1st century BC, shows her with a hooked nose and a stern expression.

New little guy alert this is not a drill we have two new little guys and, as a juli-verse first, they have limbs!!!

Heath (any pronouns) is named and based off of when I was younger and grew intensely obsessed with drawing a little face I saw in the smoke detector which, you guessed it, I named Heath. Lorna (she/her) looks like a Taco Bell sauce packet but is actually based on a fire alarm.
Are they lore important? Of course they are
Bonus, for scale:

#the year of julius#heath d. tector#lorna a. wales#justus k. kortizone#justus wasn't a random pull. they're the exit guard assigned to lorna and heath#I'm so charmed by these little guys I can't wait to draw them more

After copious periods of staring at reference art, I had another Trevor Moment and realized Julius’ neckerchief got too far towards the middle. So that visible peek of his chest was not my personal doing-- it’s necessary.
(This comic is unrelated to the point of these sketches)
#I think a part of what I gotta remember is that you cannot really see julius' physique with that coat on#so I don't have to be too specific of anything else save for the overall shape of his shoulders#but y'know I get that issue with richter's little neckerchief thing too so I'll get better over time#I'm not just drawing this guy on repeat because of boo-boo-ha-ha reasons :V#(though I will repeat again everyone in this family is very charming)#. . . oh yeah so the comic#I just found that line to be more funny than it should be#you should know me by now making stupid comics out of tiny observations (see: that freaking doll) :)#doodle-daas#comics#castlevania#julius belmont#soma cruz#genya arikado#anti netflixvania

“Th-then if you’re not here for my blood.. what are you here for?” Morgan asked with his voice trembling as he started slowly backing away from the red haired teen in front of him.
He didn’t get far before his back hit the wall.
He was cornered.
Julius smirked as he used his arm to casually block Morgan’s attempt at escape. His pale hand rested lazily on the wall while the other hand gently tipped Morgan’s chin up.
Morgan’s heart thudded violently in his chest but he didn’t know whether it was out of fear or something else. He suspected, maybe even knew the answer he was going to get and it made him flustered to say the least.
Julius smirked at the mortal, his fangs glinting menacingly, “Why I’m here for you, of course.”
#I am not immune to vampire!Julius thoughts#vampires just have this kinda flirty charm to them and I can very much imagine Julius doing this#morgius#maybe just maybe I’ll write more of this

i have a concept for regurein reverse au where regulus is a royal knight (thriving; the type of knight from whom julius neded to protect subaru by beating shit out of him; (rightly) considered a class traitor by felt and humiliated by her mercilessly daily) and reinhard is a witch cultist (utterly miserable; ran away from his home and responsibility and family and mixed up with a wrong crowd; mostly just stands there menacingly; lye correctly identifies him as a boiling pan with a lid welded to it and wants to see what happens). it would be really funny To Me and also would involve 1) julius and felix coping and seething 2) reinhard exuding absolutely rancid toxic positivity vibes completely by accident (he is sirius favourite because of it) and 3) heartbreaking: the worst knight of lugunica is simping for the most dangerous man in the witch cult
#re zero#important to note that reinhard is still The hottest man in the entire world. everybody thinks he has an Authority of Diabolical Seducer.#and everybody thinks he has a harem full of the most beautiful men and women trapped under his spell. he is not even aware of that.#julius gripping his sword hilt so hard it almost cracks:#subaru. you mustn't fall under his charm. he is.... a very magnetic young man. you'll pay a horrible price if you don't learn this lesson#narrator voice: they did not in fact learned that lesson#meanwhile regulus in the background is like#well obviously I'M built different. how dare you to imply otherwise (nobody wasn't talking to him at all) (he is in fact not)#in the backgrounder background felix tries to explode all of them with his mind

THE CHAINED CIRCUS POST!
(If youve been ever intrested in my blog please read this it would mean alot to me!)
I've realized i've been talking about my comic the chained circus for quite some time but barely explained whats it about what characters are in it and overall how it'll look so heres a post explaining what The chained circus or TCC comic is!
Since last year i've been meaning to make a comic using rubberhose public domain characters, before steamboat willie came into the public domain i planned to make a very diffrent plot based comic that was suppoust to be a "fan" work and looking back would probably end up too big for me, but with steamboat willie free now i've decided i'll try to not break any trademarks or copyrights and make an plot-gag oryginal comic
the characters are based on their already known counterparts and there is inspiration taken from comics and shorts that still belong to the walt disney company and dreamworks inc. however the characters arent the same, there are many things changed about them role wise, design wise and characterization wise, at first I aimed to have them be as close to their most popular characterizations but then i realized that I had perspective on some of these characters others do not have and after few nights spent looking at the wall intensly and thinking I decided to do what I find the most fun and intresting despite it posibly not being a take everyone might enjoy or find "accurate" it is a take I put lots of love and hope into
indie works have been a big intrest of mine for years and public domain made me see some real gorgeous stories with lots of work put into them from other other small artist, what I admired the most about them is how the characters often got re-written in ways that would not even be looked at in corporate workspaces, and after slowing things down I looked at my own work from an outsiders perspective and asked myself "why shoudnt I write them diffrently to how they were written before?" and the only answears that I could think of made me feel more like a executive breathing down an artists neck rathen than the artist
while I understand my takes on characters in the story might not be everyones cup of tea I like them and genuinely have fun with them and must ask everyone reading this who do enjoy already existing takes on all of these characters to at least give my works a chance and look at them for a moment even from the corner of your eye
Whats the comic about?
Its about toons that at their lowest [or stupidest] decided to sign a contract with a shady ringmaster simply referred to as "MR" the toons are now stuck working for him as entertainers at his circus...a very porly managed circus, MR is not the brightest and while not truly evil he is quite stupid, that mixed with his greed leads to circus endlessly having to deal with something, be it undoing a badly struck deal, having to preform in shady places, sudden changes in their work schedules none are happy with or the accual devil who knows!
what type of a comic is this?
The chained circus is a gag comic! mostly lighthearted many chapters/stories wont be very plot driven but despite that there still will be ongoing plot in it you might wanna follow!
unlike a typical gag comic things will change overtime, one story wont be forgotten to make another one work and suddently characters wont forget their lessons or morals from before [unless theres an accual reason for it in the story]
And while the comic is mostly a comedy there will be serious moments in it there and there but do not worry! anything that will require a content warning or a trigger warning will be marked at the start of the chapter/in title card [ I write more about that below ]
overall id say that there will be more gag and comedy focused chapters but the lore/story driven chapters will leave a stronger mark after themselfs
The artstyle?
The comic will be in black and white with the only color visible being yellow, i plan on making the artstyle slightly messy i want you to feel like youre looking at something indie, not put through corporstions eye, i plan on the lineart being a bit rought and the texture of both characters fur and clothes will have noise to it, I dont plan on making it visualy busy or overwhelming but you'll mostlikely wont see much still color (or well brightness)
while not ideal and more of concept art here are some examples
Who will be the main characters?
The main characters are
Michael charm (mickey mouse) as the clown
Oswald charm (oswald the lucky rabbit) as the arial dancer
Julius. (Julius the cat) he does all the paperwork
Minerva mice (minnie mouse) as the magician
Francine fanny cottontail (sometimes reffered to as "bunny lou") as the Contortionist
Peg leg pete (accual name "peter fluffpaw") as the strong man
While the recurring Side characters are
MR. - The circuses ringmaster, but definitley not head, the man that menaged to lock others in with a bunch of contracts but cant multiply by 2 (oryginal character)
Alice comedy - julius' right hand woman and best friend! She helps with the paperwork and despite not spending much time with the toons because of their...strong reaction to her, she tries to be kind and helpful to them, what a sweet kid! (alice comedies)
Age rating? content warnings?
The chained circus is very much not made with children in mind but also not adults, id say its rated T (teen, aka 13+) While i don't plan on making every character swear every chapter 40+ times an ocassional cuss word there and there might be dropped, some humor can be based around more adult themes, none of it would be too serious, it is a gag comic afterall but I do plan on putting warnings at the start of the chapter at the title card since i belive all triggers are valid, there will be 3 levels of warnings,
Blue for jokes or brief mentions
Purple for slightly serious implements/showcases
Red for explicit serious showcases
do keep in mind that red rating will be barely used and most likely will be for things like characters being in distress, scary imaginary, heavier arguments and such, things I belive could be heavy or upseting for some but not dreadfull, like I said more plot driven chapters will happen but it is suppoust to be a comedy comic at the end of the day
when and where can I read it?
I plan on writing out a whole chapter then uploading it over the course of 2 weeks publishing few pages at the time [as you decided on a poll i made] the comic will be avaiable here, comic fury and on my neocities website! I'll link all of them here when the first pages of the pilot will be out
as of relase date I hope to start publishing first pages this month but cant yet tell if early on or later on I'll update this post and make other seperate posts about it when I figure it out
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING THIS POST! LIKE I SAID IT MEANS ALOT TO ME AND WORDS CANT EXPRESS HOW MUCH ANY SUPPORT OF YOURS MEANS TO ME! <3<3<3<3<3
Feel free to tag me, ask me anything in my askbox or reblog or comment whatever id love to answear your questions or hear your thoughts ^ ^!

Celebrations bear the risk of inviting ill omens, according to her grandfather. Those of the Loptr Church do not pay tribute to honor the anniversary of one’s birth. Each day is a victory pried from the remorseless hands of those who wish to extinguish their existence. The very act of living is the start of a revolution.
But exceptions to rules could be made especially when they were set in place by the Archbishop.
-
Prince Julius is one of them. Sara has been told he is special. Being special though has never won her any friends and she hopes this time will be different. It has to be because Grandfather has never gone to such lengths to introduce her to anyone before.
Hands tightly wound around a gift for a boy she has never met, she stands at the edge of the Belhalla’s gardens. Gradually, she acquaints herself with the scenery and voices. Flowers blossom in colors that Sara didn’t even know they could, lining every walkway as far as her eyes could see. It makes her skin crawl in excitement.
The adults leave their children unsupervised for the most part, busying themselves with food and conversation. None of the children her age have much interesting to say. With the exception of one or two, they are unlearned in magic while those who have begun their studies have little to show for it aside from a few sparks.
However, it does surprise Sara to discover that Grandfather had not mentioned Princess Julia with silvery hair so similar to her own. One by one gifts are offered up to the royal children and she realizes that she was not given a second present for some reason.
Only when the boy with cherry red hair is finally alone does she approach him. Earlier, it had been difficult to get a proper look at him due to the crowd of small bodies surrounding the two twins.
A silence overcomes her, confusion writ across her face as if she cannot identify something.
"You're so ordinary," Sara voices in disbelief as soon as the thought occurs. "You're Prince Julius?"
Ordinary.
It sounded coarse and ugly, like a shattered window and the whistle of the invading wind. Julius had been called many things in his few years - special, beautiful, talented, a scion from birth, a long-awaited messiah - but never ordinary. He stares with the faintest wrinkle in the otherwise smooth skin between his eyebrows as if he’s never even heard the word before. The one who had uttered it looks like his sister, so he can’t call her ugly too, but he doesn’t recall having seen her face around the castle before, and for a fleeting moment they each try to figure the other out.
“You must not understand what that word means,” he settles on a reasonable explanation, and he smiles radiantly, eager to help, eager to show off. He is, as his tutors have told him time and again, quite bright. A reader by the age of five.
“Ordinary is the opposite of what I am,” he says with the guileless arrogance of children, the kind yet to grow thorns. “The whole country wouldn’t bring me gifts on my birthday if I was ordinary. Didn’t you bring me something, too?”
He reaches out his hand, still smiling, his eyes sparkling. "Usually they're left in the parlor, but if you wanted to give this one to me in private, then I won't tell. Then I'll send you along to my sister."
Most who found him were looking for her. She could be so terribly elusive.
#shadoll#// when I saw the setting you picked for this ask this morning I was so excited to reply#// if you want to do a few more back and forths for this exchange I don't mind#// I haven't had much reason to think of what julius was like pre possession#// but I think he was definitely less insufferable and mean#// charming in the right light#// though also subconsciously feeling like he was put in a box away from everyone else

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Celebrating Artist Gordon Parks!
In a 2001 interview with the oral history project The History Makers, American photographer and filmmaker Gordon Parks (1912-2006) was asked to define his profession: “I think I was an artist,” he says, “photographer, writer, painter, poet, film director, and a lover.” He laughs. “Renaissance man. That’s what we call a lover” He might’ve added musician, composer, and documentarian. Parks was born in Kansas in 1912, left home at fifteen after the death of his mother, played piano and sang in brothels for money, worked in a Chicago flop house after the stock market crash, and found himself inspired by FSA photographs in the 1930s. After receiving work as a commercial photographer, he won a Julius Rosenwald Fellowship for his work documenting Chicago’s South Side, and was invited to join the Farm Security Administration himself.
The photographs highlighted here are drawn from his work at this early point in his long and dynamic career. They are reprinted in the 2018 book Gordon Parks : The New Tide, Early Work, 1940-1950, edited by Philip Brookman, consulting curator of photography at the National Gallery of Art. The book captures Parks’ work in and out of commercial photography, government projects, celebrity profiles, and his early years with LIFE magazine – where he would work until it stopped monthly publication in 1972. Parks was known for earning the trust of his subjects, and not betraying it. In a remembrance of Parks by one of his former editors at LIFE, Barbara Baker Burrows recalls Parks’ charm, and the confidence he earned, whether he was capturing foreign militaries, street gangs, celebrities, or civil servants. Parks died in 2006 at the age of 93.

For more about Gordon Parks and his legacy, visit The Gordon Parks Foundation.
