Modern Encanto AU
Chapter 6 The Arrival
The family looked around for the Taxi Driver, they looked for what they thought was going to be a man, it was in fact a woman.
They waited for maybe a couple of minutes until the woman held up a sign, in bold large letters it said:
JULIETA ROJAS
Julieta glared at her family and instead of telling them she waved her hand at them, which they all understood and followed her.
"Hello, Julieta Rojas?" The woman asked. It was obvious she didnt speak english, she had a strong accent, and thats about it. Thats what Julieta thought. But she did speak english, her first language.
"Yes, thats me."
"Alright, come with me then."
The family followed her to a small car that wouldnt fit all of them.
"How much seats are there?" Agustin asked
"5."
"Including the drivers seat?"
"Yes."
"I'm afraid that isn't enough for us."
"Thats too bad."
"Well we're not going in separate cars." Julieta answered
"I didn't know I needed a six seater car."
"I told you in the email, I'll even check." Julieta got her phone out her pocket and opened the email, it took her some time to find it but when she did she showed it to the driver.
"I dont care, go get another driver." Which made Julieta call the company for a new driver and car that had six seats. Her daughters just stared at her in embarrassment, she didn't notice but Agustin noticed and couldn't help but chuckle.
Julieta watched as the driver got back into the car and drove away.
"Ugh so rude."
10 MINUTES LATER
The car finally arrived, so the family put the bags and suitcases in the boot and got ready for a short drive.
The drive wasn't bad, the driver didn't talk nor ask where they were going. Agustin started to worry because he thought the driver was going the wrong way.
After a few minutes they were there at the resort, they waved goodbye and paid the driver, and went over to the reception where they gave Julieta the keys to the rooms."

2nd week of Aug-kissed: “Hand Kiss” and “Gentle Peck”.
This is what is called “Aug-kissed”, in literal sense!
What is their portmanteau name, by the way? “Aglieta” and “Juliustín” roll off the tongue the best out of what I can figure, a hitch is, however, these also happen to spell like actual surnames, which is not acceptable, from what I gather.
Baby keel-billed toucan, yet again, isn’t real size-accurate, probably.

Perhaps God was listening after all; they’d been walking for perhaps twenty minutes when they, impossibly, came upon a wall. It was a massive stone wall with a thick wooden gate; a clear seven feet high and…Was that a look-out tower on the wall? Ismael could see golden candlelight through the windows. It was the sort of wall he’d associate with a castle; a battlement, an obvious defence.
“Help!” he called, desperately hoping these would be friends and not foes. “Please, we need help!”
The men must have been watching, there was no way they heard him over the storm. Two men, young, tall and strong, burst out of the look-out tower and gaped down at him. One turned around and bellowed; “Open the gate!” He said something Ismael didn’t understand; “It’s Señor Madrigal’s friends!”

The Rojas family reach the Encanto at last. The last thing they expect to see is their supposedly-dead neighbour, Bruno. After everything they've been through, a familiar face is a relief.

Hugo *falls through ceiling*
Giovanni, not even phased: Hi Hugo.
Hugo, laying on a pile of rubble—his head resting on the floor, completely: Hi Giovanni.
------------------------------------------------------------
Hugo, quieter: That hurt.
Cesare: Hey I'm back from the market—WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
Cyriacus, standing in the center of a strangely neat pentagram drawn on Casita's floors and holding a melting candle in one hand, and a book in another: You told me to satanize the house!
Cesare: Sanitize! I said sanitize! Clean this up before Abuela and the padre get here!
------------------------------------------------------------
Princesa: You can trust me! Let's not forget who pulled you out of that river when you were 12!
Fuega: Let's not forget who pushed me in.
------------------------------------------------------------
Miguel Jr *jumps from the second balcony of Casita in a bubble shield, bounces, and breaks something*
Arlo, on his last fucking straw: THIS IS WHY MOM DOESN'T FUCKING LOVE YOU!
Camilo *laughs loudly off screen*
------------------------------------------------------------
Arlo: Here’s a fun Christmas idea. We hang mistletoe, but instead of kissing, you have to FIGHT whoever else is under it.
Zoey: Arlo no.
Miguel Jr: Mistlefoe.
Zoey: Please stop encouraging him.
------------------------------------------------------------
Arlo: I trust Zoey.
Miguel Jr: You think they know what they're doing?
Arlo: I wouldn't go that far.
------------------------------------------------------------
Arlo: Oscar! My face is on fire!
Oscar: Arlo! Are you ok?!
Arlo: Oh yes, I'm fine. I just said that to make sure you'd come in here quickly.
Oscar: But your face is on fire.
Arlo: Yes. It's much faster than shaving.
------------------------------------------------------------
Oscar: Please, I'm begging you, go to a doctor.
Arlo: I'm sorry is this OUR stab wound? Stay out of it.
------------------------------------------------------------
Arlo: Listen, I can explain…
Zoey: You’re making $500 and you’re only gonna pay me $100?
------------------------------------------------------------
Miguel Jr: You’re getting 100 dollars? I’m getting $20!
Avila: You guys are getting paid?
Marcelo: Ma'am, this is a Wendy’s.
------------------------------------------------------------
Someone random: Wow, are you guys twins?
Marisol *stares at Mariana*
Mariana *stares back*
Marisol and Mariana *scream  in sync* YOU STOLE MY FACE!  *runs away in opposite directions*
------------------------------------------------------------
Hugo: Marcelo, how are those chicken strips?
Marcelo, looking at Hugo's blackened chicken strips: F%#K YA CHICKEN STRIPS.....F%#K ya chicken strips!
------------------------------------------------------------
Rick: You fight like my sister!
José, being a smart ass: I've fought your sister, that's a compliment!
------------------------------------------------------------
Princesa: There is no better feeling than someone playing with your hair. Or running her fingers down your back—
Leta: Unless you thought you were alone.
Oscar: And now, the weather.
------------------------------------------------------------
Renata: Get a real job! And some pants!
Marcelo, who was just walking past: annnnd that's enough of this game.
Vera, grumbling: I am wearing pants. You just have a stupid power.
------------------------------------------------------------
Five year old Sofia *running around during the family barbecue, something shiny in her hands*
Camilo, drink in hand: what you got there, Sof?
Five year old Sofia *smilingly widely* A KNIFE! *runs off*
Camilo *spits out his drink, drops it, and rubs after her* NO!
------------------------------------------------------------
Tito, 15 years old: Yo, how much money do you have?
Amada, 5 years old: 69 cents.
Tito: AYE, you know what that means?
Amada, sad: I don't have enough money for chicken nuggets.
------------------------------------------------------------
Miguel Jr: Hurricane Katrina? More like Hurricane Tortilla *throws tortilla into Marcelo’s face on accident*
Marcelo, as the tortilla slides slowly down his face: I hate you.
------------------------------------------------------------
Claudine: AHH! Stahhp. I coulda dropped mah croissant.
------------------------------------------------------------
Mason: Mothertrucker, dude, that hurt like a buttcheek on a stick.
------------------------------------------------------------
Cesare: Glendale, can you read number 23 for the class?
Glenn: No, I cannot.... What up? I'm Glenn, I'm 19 and I never fucking learned how to read.
------------------------------------------------------------
Fuega, trying to come out to Ligera: Hey, I'm lesbian.
Ligera, having stayed up all night making shadow puppets with her friends: I thought you were Colombian.
------------------------------------------------------------
Juan: WHAT ARE THOSEEEEE?
Javier: THEY are my crocs!
------------------------------------------------------------
Belinda:  In my defense, I was left unsupervised.
Elmira: Wasn't Silvia with you?
Silvia: In my defense, I was also left unsupervised.
------------------------------------------------------------
Rachel, not in the least bit sorry: I think we're gonna have to kill this guy, Cornel.
Cornel, soberly: Damn.
------------------------------------------------------------
Emilia: You have to apologize to the town!
Oscar: Fine. 'Unfuck you' or whatever.
------------------------------------------------------------
Carlos: WHOEVER THREW THAT PAPER, YOUR MOM'S A HOE!
------------------------------------------------------------
Amelia, shoots up in bed in the middle of the night: Oh my god, they were roommates.
------------------------------------------------------------
Rory: This Bitch Empty, YEET! *Throws bottle*
------------------------------------------------------------
Gigi: Mason stop...Mason stop...You're gonna get in trouble. Mason.

The Future of the Family Madrigal
Inspired by @hannahhook7744's AU, here's what my new Madrigal family tree looks like, roughly twenty-six years after the events of the movie.
I used the scrapped characters from the Encanto Artbook, as well as some early versions of existing characters to round things out.
Tumblr media
EDIT: Added two additional kids, to bring Dolores and Mariano's kid count up to five.
First Row: Pedro Madrigal and Alma Cadenza
Second Row: Félix Castillo, Pepa Madrigal, Alejandra Delgado, Bruno Madrigal, Julieta Madrigal, and Augustín Rojas
Third Row: Antonio Madrigal, Camilo Madrigal, Dolores Madrigal, Miranda Madrigal, Amelia Madrigal, Sofía Madrigal, Isabela Madrigal, Luisa Madrigal, and Mirabel Madrigal
Fourth Row: Marcos Vasquez, Mariano Guzmán, Juana Aguado, Bubo Marquez
Fifth Row (and the one slightly above it): Hugo Madrigal, José Madrigal, Héctor Madrigal, Princesa Madrigal, Fuega Madrigal, Mariana Madrigal, Óscar Madrigal, Beatriz Madrigal, Lidia Madrigal
Sixth Row: Leta Madrigal, Andrés Madrigal, Carlos Madrigal, Avila Madrigal, Amada Madrigal, Tomás Madrigal, Rómulo Madrigal, and Zoe Madrigal
Putting a character and familial guide under the cut, because the tree is m e s s y
Alejandra is Bruno's wife, and Miranda, Amelia, and Sofía are their daughters.
Alejandra is a scrapped character who I think was supposed to be the original founder, and the Julieta Character's mother. She appears to be dead in the version of the story she's in, as we see her statue, but not her. I decided to make her Bruno's wife, as I think he deserves a scary sword wife who loves him and their daughters very much.
Miranda was an early version of Julieta, and Alejandra's daughter. Since the two look near identical, they kinda ended up being a package deal. Miranda is technically Bruno's step-daughter, but that doesn't really matter.
Amelia and Sofía are characters from a very early concept. I threw them in as Bruno's daughters, as I liked the idea of one of Bruno's kids having a 'bad' power.
Marcos is Camilo's husband, and Hugo, José, and Héctor are their sons.
There are so many early concepts of Bruno, that there are no less than three in this tree, and they all look different. Marcos is one of those early concepts, back when Bruno was a skinny twink with bright blue eyes. The name Marco was chosen from a list of potential names for Bruno.
Hugo is an early version of Antonio (there are also a lot of those here), one where he's older and selectively mute.
José seems to be from the same era as the twins, although he doesn't get any notes. He seems like he'd be Camilo's kid in any timeline lol.
Héctor is yet another concept of Antonio, but I thought he looked different enough from Hugo that it worked out. I picked the name as a reference to the movie Coco.
Leta, Andrés, Carlos, Avila, and Amada are Dolores and Mariano's children.
Leta was Pepa's twin sister originally, so I thought it made sense to make her her granddaughter instead.
Andrés is another Bruno, and I thought he looked the most like Dolores out of any of the concept characters. Andre was another potential Bruno name, so I named this version of him that.
Carlos is the infamous beta Camilo. Since Cami doesn't have any bio kids, I gave Carlos to Dolores to explain the simillarites. Plus, he does kind of resemble Mariano.
Avila and Amada are two of the four concept girl cousins in the artbook. Picked them because they have Dolores' ears and Pepa's teeth. @hannahhook7744 showed me a concept character from an early script called Amada, and we discovered that Alma's name was originally going to be Avila (in the 2017 version) so I picked those names. (Thanks Hannah!)
Juana is Luisa's wife, and Tomás, Rómulo, and Zoe are their children.
Juana is an early Pepa, back when her gift was indestructability. I paired them together just because Luisa needs a laid back gf to counteract The Anxiety. Her name is actually a beta Julieta name.
Tomás and Rómulo are a pair of twins that appeared only once in a family portrait. There are very limited boy concepts, so I snagged these guys too. Tomás means "twin" and Rómulo is the Spanish form of Romulus, a very famous twin.
Zoe is from the same era as José, Amelia, and Sofía. She's basically the poster child for Scrapped Encanto Characters.
Bubo is Mirabel's husband and Óscar, Beatriz, and Lidia are their children.
Bubo is Isa's scrapped love interest, but I'd already planned on having Isa stay single when I learned about him, so I ditched the OC I gave to Mirabel, and gave Bubo to her. They both have glasses, so I think they'd be cute together.
Óscar is the third Bruno, and the one who gets the Óscar name. I was originally using a different Óscar, but figured that this one looks the most like Bubo. The name is the most widely used name for beta Bruno.
Beatriz is a beta Mirabel, so obviously I made her her daughter.
Lidia is a Luisa, and looks decently enough like canon Mirabel and Bubo. Lidia was supposedly Luisa's name before it was Luisa.
Isabela has no partner, but Princesa, Fuega, and Mariana are her daughters.
Princesa is a bit of an enigma to me. I think she was supposed to be an aunt of some kind, maybe Augustín's sister? It's never made very clear. She's shown to be dating/married to a beta Mariano, and potentially the mother of the four girl cousins? Anyway, I aged her down so I could use her as Isabela's daughter.
Fuega was supposed to be Isabela's other sister/cousin, one who was jealous of her gift and 'perfect' status.
Mariana seems to be a veeeeery early version of Mirabel. The name also stems from an early version of Mirabel.
I have bios for all the kids, I just need to post them.

Isabela headcanons

Isabela Belén Rojas Madrigal. Born 7th of August 1928

Childhood
Was the golden child since her birth. Obviously, she wasn't forced into perfection since day one, but still was favourised for being the first grandchild.
Isabela said her first word when being babysat by Pepa and Bruno. Pepa called her brother "dumb". Isabela had repeated. (Can you tell me Pepa wasn't crying from how proud she was?)
Extremely stubborn. You couldn't make her stop if she wanted to do something. No matter how many candy you'd give her.
Used "I'm older so you should listen to me" card all the time. Especially when it came to her sisters.
Friendly teased Luisa for being younger. It didn't happen with Mirabel much because Isabela was busy exploring her cool new gift when she was born.
Was fascinated with flowers. Enjoyed making flower crowns even before getting her gift.
She was slowly rising in perfection even before Mirabel's ceremony. But it wasn't very obvious. Failed ceremony just made the process way faster.

Adult years (pre-movie)

Enjoyed reading about various plants. Could easily give advice about any plant. Did anyone used it? No
Actually pretty good in sport. Had won several award in school, mostly for gymnastics. Probably the second most sportive Madrigal after Luisa.
Made flower crowns manually in her room as a way to distract herself and calm down when she was overwhelmed.
Started to date Mariano because she didn't want to upset him or Abuela. Mariamo was the one to confess his feelings (ableit to his Abuela), Alma didn't set them up.
Had thoughts of running away several times to escape perfectionism and always felt guilty for it.
Started to have gray hair at the age of seventeen. Always styled her hair the way when it would be hidden. As Isabela thought it wasn't perfect
If she has to go on a date with Mariano, she'll try to get them to the meadow. There Isabela could at least withness a beautiful nature.
Disliked Mirabel because felt that her sister wad getting everything without an effort. And was jealous of the fact that their parents were closer to Mirabel. Isabela didn't realize the full extent of how her actions hurt Mirabel too.
Had nearly no relationship with Luisa, taking how busy they both were.
If anyone dared to misgender Dolores, even prior WECID, they would wake to see their house wrapped in roses. Thorns work just as good as cacti.
Post-movie
Changes her dress every odd day. Coloring it, cutting, whatever she can think off. Girl knows no consistence. Her favourite colour also changes constantly. Today it's sky blue, tomorrow will be green and yesterday it was gray.
Same goes for her hair. She regularly paints it. And don't forget glimmering silver! She doesn't hide it anymore.
Julieta cried when she saw Isabela having gray hair. Because it made her realize just how much she had grown up
Experiments with herself all the time. How else should she find herself?
It took her a while to get comfortable with showing her true self to people outside of the family. Sometimes she still wonders if others actually like her.
Grows avocado around just to add it to her food. She's allergic to avocado.
Adds milk to people's coffee just for the sake of it. Only drinks café con leche with an extreme amount of sugar.
The biggest drama queen you could meet.
The favourite niece to both Bruno and Pepa.
The most talkative and outgoing out of her sisters, won't shut up if you say a word about plants and will spend hours talking on it.
Protective. Will join Luisa on fighting whoever had insulted their sister/cousins. If not fight all by herself of course.
Relationship.
Alma: Has a bit hard time with her post-movie. Doesn't hate her grandmother and probably still close to her, but does have troubles with expressing herself to her for the first few years. Eventually gets over it and starts to show her messy side in all its beauty.
Pepa: They are very similar. Isabela adores her Tía. Pepa probably often joins to gossip with Isabela and Dolores. Both are emotional and very dramatic. Pepa also helps Isabela with expressing her emotions via plants with her gift. Same way the weather express her emotions. .
Bruno: Isabela likes her Tío. But feels awkward around him for the time being. The last time she saw him was when she was eleven. And he was barely socialising even back then.. She likes him. And Bruno seems to understand her pretty well, as he was the favourite back in his youth too. She probably the first one ut of grandkids to be comfortable around him.
Julieta: Likes her mother, but they aren't overall close. Isabela is an adult, and way more active and crazy than calm and responsible Julieta.
Agustín: Closer to her dad, expessially as she doesn't smell like flowers all the time anymore. But the thing of being an adult is still in work. It's easier to open up to her Tíos rather than to her parents.
Félix: Cool but pretty distant.
Dolores: Best friend since childhood™, gossip about everything. Isabela was the first person Dolores had confessed her feelings for Mariano after the engagement failed. Attached to the hip and together almost all the time. They were close even when both still were involved into the whole thing with Mariano.
Luisa: Grew closer as both became free from expectations. They like to tease eachother and playfully fight (which is usually Isabela trying to hit Luisa and Luisa blocking her). Isabela uses her muscles as a pillow whenever she wants. Luisa pays the favour by using Isabela as an armrest.
Camilo: Arguing and competitive relationship. Both are active for the sake of being messy. Probably will fight eachother just for the sake of it. Isabela was very jealous of Camilo and found him annoying pre-movie (even more than Mirabel). She still thinks Camilo is annoying but enjoys messing with him.
Mirabel: Now both are pretty cool. They still argue from time to time, but it's never even half as bad as it used to be. Mirabel encourages Isabela from time to time, and Isabela looks after her sister especially when Luisa's not around. Both try to make it up for all the problems in their relationship
Antonío: Wasn't close to him before, giving an age gap. Now adore spending time together as two the most passionate about nature. Isabela often takes Antonío out to show him wild outskirts where he can see many animals
Nicknames:
Isa (by Mirabel, Luisa, Dolores, Agustín and Felíx)
Bela (By Dolores, Luisa, Camilo, Julieta, Pepa, Alma and Bruno)
Hermanita (By Luisa when Isabela annoys her. Or when she wants to annoy Isabela)
Señorita Perfecta. (Mirabel when Isabela annoys her. Other grandkids as a joke. Isabela herself when she refers to her old self)
Mi Flor (Alma, rarely her parents)

mirabel headcanons?
Absolutely! Here’s Mirabel headcanons:
Mirabel’s full name is Mirabel Teresa Rojas Madrigal
She is named after Saint Teresa of Ávila
Her birth was a disappointment as everyone had been expecting a boy
As a baby, Mirabel was very easy to please/soothe and didn’t enjoy being fussed over
Her first eleven words were all colours, starting with “purple” for Luisa
She had no interest in walking or crawling, until Agustín accidentally knocked a book off a shelf and she had to move to put it back. This started a long game of Agustín (and later Pepa) throwing books and Mirabel stopping what she was doing to walk over and put them back
Young Mirabel use to cry at mess
Subsequently, she had to eat separately from Camilo
Mirabel had her first eye test after Camilo’s ceremony, as she had been unable to see it
She has myopia in both eyes
The green frames are not for Bruno (who had no relationship with her), they are for Pepa because young Mirabel wanted to have green eyes like her Tía
Agustín taught her to play the piano very early on
Julieta taught her to sew
When stressed, she over cleans - a habit she picked up from her mother
The most popular theory of what her gift would be was sight, ironically. The family figured she was very observant and similar to Dolores, hence similar gifts
As she gets older, she gets mistaken for Julieta more frequently
Like her mother, she’s never had any desire to leave Encanto
Like her father, she burns very easily in the heat and therefore tends to carry around an embroidered parasol (that matches her skirt) during particularly hot days
She is known to be the most intelligent among the Madrigals
The biggest history nerd
Will find a way to make anything into a history lesson. Seriously ANYTHING. Definitely associates particular historical figures with her family members
Mirabel is the biggest bookworm in Encanto
She also has a fondness for philosophy
Her philosophy knowledge can be a bad mix with her overthinking, anxious mind. When she’s anxious or paranoid, her philosophy books are placed on the highest shelves in Casita
She is closest to Luisa
She didn’t start helping with Antonio until he reached the toddler stage/moved into the nursery with her, as she is uncomfortable around babies
She use to read to Antonio when they shared a room, so much that she unintentionally memorised the stories. She use to be able to recount them word for word while they were out and about town to calm him down
She can play the piano and accordion
She loves knitting. Never leaves home without some knitting needles and wool, just in case
She has no interest or skill in making clothes. She just likes the more decorative elements (embellishing), such as embroidery and beading
Probably gets a job as an embellisher in the future
She learnt French for the sole purpose of reading originally French books. She is fluent, as far as reading and writing goes. She is pretty terrible at speaking
She has very bad stage fright and hates public speaking. She also can’t act, like at all. If Tío Bruno or Camilo want her help with a show, she’ll only accept a backstage role
She is the shortest Madrigal and always will be. She uses it as a bragging right, as oppose to a weakness
She is aromantic asexual
She doesn’t want children. Maybe just a cat. Or three…. Or twenty.
Is a real old lady at heart
She has PTSD - that’s pretty self-explanatory
Is a bit of a workaholic, and therefore can be hypocritical to Luisa
Don’t argue with her. She will write an entire six page essay to prove you wrong with full evidence
Does have a habit of needing to be right, she gets it from Dolores
Mirabel does not want to be Alma’s successor

🌻 Omg, Polar Express AU without Cocooned looks so cute! The Cocooned looked cute to begin with, but I'm a sucker for AUs where Mira has a reason to not have a gift or even just gets to have a gift, lol. You said you have a snippet already planned or made for it, so does this mean you have ideas set out for it? Basically, I have QUESTIONS.
How long does it take Augustín to realize that his Christmas Magic is what kept her from getting a Mardigal Gift? And does he ever reveal to Julietta any part of this, such as what he does every Christmas Eve or even just why her daughter doesn't have a gift when he figures it out? I have a thought that he would tell Juli only after she starts freaking out about why Mira has no gift (though in the privacy of their room, because she looks the type to only freak in her bedroom where she can stop being "the strong one").
RIGHT??? I LOVE AUS LIKE THAT TOO. Guilty pleasure tbh. I guess it just gives me the closure the movie never did (except in the one kids book where she DID have a door but shhhhh
ANYWAY YEAH I DO HAVE IDEAS❗❗ I think Julieta was the only one who knew. Agustín might have implied it to everyone else, but since he never explicitly stated it, they just. Assumed he really liked trains and Christmas 😭😭 He told Julieta because she didn't want her waking up on Christmas Eve and wondering where he went 🥸
He does sort of assume she might have it. But it's only ever confirmed when Agustín gives her a silver bell and she hears that stuff. Sure the other kids might hear it, but Miranda heard it the first time. So, he sort does some other things and makes the deduction that yes, she inherited Rojas Christmas Magic and not Madrigal Gift Magic❓❗
Tumblr media
An idea I had was Mirabel did get a room, but she also had a train she could summon (FAR smaller than the Polar Express; think of those trains they have at zoos or amusement parks). Basically she went around as a "conductor in training" and basically gave people rides to where they needed to go. Or just for fun. The trains makes its own tracks, cause magic, duh, but she can go just about anywhere with it.
Anyway, because I never expanded on this au. I never really had many ideas. But as you all know, I'M ALWAYS HAPPY TO SEE YOURS 🗣🗣🗣
A stupid. Joke I had in my mind was Mirabel would always ring the bell. And Alma would be like "what is that ringing???" Implying that she believed in Santa and Christmas lol

What if modern times mirabel left to live on her own because the family wasn't helping her and alma was not being a good grandmother like she had a business and alma tried to destroy it but mirabel is a successful content creator and everything like the youtuber sundia love Michelle Reed ect.
Dude, I'm so sorry, I've been thinking of a plot like that for years and now you've awakened the gerbil inside of me. I've been wanting to talk so someone about this so bad and you've given me the excuse.
I've always thought Mirabel would do great in fashion, this can work in both the original setting and modern times.
My headcanon is that Agustin's family, the Rojas' are a family of tailors, his mother was a dressmaker and had a business. Agustin was set to take it over but Alma has this whole thing about Madrigals working for money. She believes that they must work to keep earning their miracle and is afraid that if they don't, they'll lose it. So how the family makes money, and when, and for what are closely monitored by her. Madrigals don't charge for what they do, and that's kind of necessary for making clothes, so Agustin gives that up to marry Julieta.
Sofia, his mother, is hurt by this, but hides it and gives the business over to Valentina (who Mirabel is named after), Agustin's sister. Agustin doesn't have a great relationship with his parents, and they don't talk about stuff. Sofia had Agustin when she was quite young and grew up in the city, coming to the Encanto when Agustin was still a boy. She and Alma had tension, Sofia felt that Alma looked down on her for being a young mother and city folk....she's not wrong.
As the years go by Sofia's frustration grows, Agustin is more Julieta's husband than her son and Alma is the Alpha Grandparent despite the Rojas' efforts. However, she and Mirabel always had a connection, as the girl loved to come by the shop and admire the pretty clothes.
After Antonio's ceremony, Mirabel feels more and more useless. She begs Alma to let her learn a trade, but Alma forbids it without telling her why. Mirabel complains to Tia Valentia who isn't crazy about her job anyway and she and Sofia conspire to have Mira come over to "help out" often. What they're really doing is teaching Mira how to make clothes and run the shop.
Mira starts to spend more time with her extended family and changes over the next 3 years. Her clothes become a reflection of her connection to them as opposed to the Madrigals. And because I think it's funny, she goes through a ridiculous amount of puberty and Isabela is the shortest of the three, so her old clothes don't fit her anyway.
Influenced by Valentia and Sofia, Mira makes her own clothes and they are in line with what's popular in 50's, a la 'Miss Victory Violet' and such

She expresses herself through eclectic jewelry and changes her glasses often, becoming a little bit of a trendsetter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alma becomes frustrated with this, seeing it as 'tart' and 'ostentatious'. The rest of the family either don't understand why Mirabel is 'acting this way' or why Alma is so against it, so no one's really sure how to stand up for her or if they should at all.
On Mirabel's 18th birthday, the Rojas' give Mirabel the shop and the apartment that's over it. Mirabel announces to the family that she's going to be a dressmaker and Alma is furious that the Rojas' didn't ask her permission about it. (in modern times, this could be Mirabel saying that she wants to get a degree in fashion instead of Accounting, like her father). Mira and Alma argue bitterly about it, both saying things they can't take back before Mirabel snaps and moves out on a whim. Packing up her things and moving into the apartment over the shop.
Mirabel regrets moving out almost immediately but she's too proud to go crawling back, so she toughs it out and realizes she's really at peace. Yes it's quieter than what she's used to and she's always a few months away from financial ruin, but she can finally relax. She doesn't have to constantly explain herself or contend with someone taking out their mood on her.
Alma does attempt to shut Mirabel down a few times, worried that she'll fail and hurt the family image, but Mirabel is really successful and of course, the Rojas' are helping her out.
The shop specializes in Quince dresses and Mirabel's style is akin to Mak Tumang and Sol Peralta

FAMILIA Y DEBER
→ Jacaerys Velaryon x Hightower!OC [Alessia Hightower]
—Aún no has dado tus votos, puedes cambiar el destino.
—¿Cómo podría dejar a Alicent o a mis sobrinos?
—¿Cómo no hacerlo?
Mañana mismo te escribiré, no quiero volver a perderte.

Chapter 5 The plane
"Are you kidding me!"
"What wrongs Mariposa?"
"I'm stuck in the middle!"
"Maybe you're with me, Mira"
"Hmm maybe, where do you sit?"
"E5"
"Ugh not even close, K7."
"Oh, I'm behind you."
"Which means me and your Papa are behind you."
"UGH, Still bad.
I'm in the midde of two strangers, Wha if I next to a child? Or even a baby! Or a creep!"
"If its a creep then I'll kindly ask the person next to me to move."
"Yeah but Paaaa, what if its a woman next to you, then she'd have to sit next to the creep!"
"Oh yeah, lets just go sit down."
They all got to the seats, Julieta looked around, she got anxious when she couldnt see Isabela and Luisa, she knew they were near each other, they'd keep each other safe. She also looked around for anybody that looked like a creep, or a young boy or girl.
AN HOUR LATER (The plane has been lifted off )
"Theres still no one next to Mirabel." Julieta muttered to Agustin.
"Maybe they're still trying to look for their seat?"
"I doubt that."
"Maybe they're in the wrong seat?" "I dont think so, look." Julieta pointed to an elderly woman with a baby in her hands.
"Excuse me dEaRe, I'm sitting over there, next to the window, do you think I could go past you? Or maybe you could come out?" A shaky old slow voice said.
"Oh, I'll just get out of my seat, ma'am." Mirabel replied getting out of her seat. She turned around to face her mother with a beaming smile as her mother gave her a thumbs up.
Julieta and Agustin thought that the Lady wasn't going to be a pain but they'd completely forgot about baby she was holding.
The first 5 minutes of them being there wasn't that bad. The baby was cooing but very quietly, they couldn't hear it. Until the cooing got louder and turned into whimpers, and those whimpers turned into weeps which turned into very loud crying.
In fact it was so loud that Isabela had messaged Julieta about it, but Julieta didnt hear the notification, Agustin did though and told her about it. The seat next to Agustin was empty, ( He was in the middle ) So he offered it to Mirabel because she looked like she could fall asleep any second now, she kept dozing off and quickly waking up because of that like chubby baby next to her. Mirabel did take the seat and tried to sleep but failed, she was still close to the baby.
After what seemed like hours the baby stopped crying. everyone was relieved but the Woman behind Agustin seemed to be annoyed.
"Are you kidding me!"
And she had a temper tantrum for the rest of flight, which wasn't for long..

Another fateful meet-cute…
Emerald shards are not likely to work as appropriate substitute for damaged eyeglasses, but what you know about those conjured by magic? You will not able to see vision of your future with it, though… Or…?
Julieta’s gift, by the way, may not be limited just by cure provided via dishes, it can be as well similar to Rapunzel’s healing power, general ability of restoring physical state by transmitting magical energy, food (hair) working as conductor. Making food is just convenient way to provide the cure, both catering to Julieta’s personal interest, accessible for patients, and not requiring unnecessarily intrusion of personal space. Growing, she, probably, figured eventually that kisses of health should stay reserved for family circle only.
On the subject of Agustín: we do know his birthday, but how old he exactly is? Only clues given, from the words of director Mr. Bush, him being slightly younger than triplets and assumption he might be born on Wednesday (referring to “miércoles” line and his somewhat unfortunate tendencies), which points to June 19, 1901, while triplets are born either 1899 or 1900 (I guess it’s former, because age difference on the scale of months isn’t that mentionable). But then Agustín also may have been born in 1907, which gives us 7-8 years of possible age gap. While it’s unlikely what was in mind of creators, rather large gap could clear up some of backstory in aspect of marriages. Judging by the ages of oldest granddaughters, both sisters got married in their mid-to-late-twenties (and near simultaneously as well), significantly later than Isabela was supposed to. Starting with two eventual spouses hanging out in different age groups for all childhood and adolescence, there was no way for anything to bloom between them for all of that time, despite them growing alongside each other. And ever when Agustín was old enough to make attempt in courting, taking in account Word of God that Agustín wasn’t Alma’s “first choice” for Julieta’s fiancée, girl’s mother had reservations about him, and his youthfulness could factor into it as well. But as Julieta, oldest daughter, was expected to get married first of her siblings, and stood her ground in choice of husband, Alma’s prolonged reluctance to accept it led to the subsequent wedding of Pepa and Félix getting postponed, despite them being set for marriage with no objections on mother’s part, probably for ages. No wonder Pepa was so stressed on the day it was finally about to occur! (Maybe Alma, with her 19th century sensibilities, couldn’t stand holding her daughters in the state of old maidens any longer and had to cave in. Poor Agu has won his place in the family by persistence!)
Alternatively, you also can take “Wednesday” comment as a joke and ignore it, which is what I’m going to do and ascribe age difference between Agustín and triplets being around 4-5 years, as he looks mid-forty to me.
Last thing, I know his family name at birth believed to be “Rojas”, though I can’t find source of it. (On the wiki, it’s said to come from artbook, but I didn’t find such info in there.) Anyway, it’s what I’m going to put in tag to mark his young self, for the lack of clarity.

In Their Eyes I See You;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Alma didn't just lose Pedro.
She lost everything.
Aka Alma sees Pedro and their families in their triplets.
Encantober Bingo 2024: Recognition.
Trigger Warnings: mention of grief, raids, fighting, threats of violence, and implied character death.
Co-written with @igetthedisneybox .
------------------------------------------------------------
Contrary to popular relief, Alma Olga Madrigal Botero (formerly Botero Molinari) didn't just lose her husband the night the raiders attacked.
Didn't just lose her wonderful, wonderful, playful, thoughtful, poetic Pedro….
No.
She lost much more than her husband. Much more than her triplets’ father.
She lost everything.
Her home. Her parents. Her brother. Pedro's family. Even some of her friends.
Alma had lost everything she had ever known in one night, with the exception of her children—her children who she was absolutely terrified to lose and who she held on too tightly to.
Her children.
Pedro's children.
Alma wasn't sure she would be able to live without them if something happened. Didn't want to know if she ever could get over something that horrible.
(Not when she still hadn't gotten over losing Pedro).
She didn't want to imagine her life without her sweet, responsible, sensible Julieta.
Didn't want to imagine her life without her fiery, impassioned, loud Pepa.
Didn't want to imagine her life without her and Pedro’s quirky, helpful, shy little Brunito.
She couldn't bear the thought of losing any of the triplets and so, she refused to even think of such a thing—just like she refused to let herself think of Pedro and the life they had, had all those years ago. When they were young and hopeful and still a they.
But no matter how hard Alma tried, she couldn't completely forget her and Pedro's families— because she saw them in her children every day.
------------------------------------------------------------
Her eldest, her precious Julieta, strongly reminded her of her own mother, Alba.
Her madre had been a strong woman, who knew what she wanted in life. Stern at times, playful at others. She was the head of the family, and Alma’s father liked it that way.
Alma sees the way Julieta acts with her siblings, always leading them, guiding them, sometimes scolding, but other times joining in on the fun. Julieta was never one to back down when she knew she was right.
She recognized her mother in how closely Julieta resembled her—especially after a long sleepless night when she was too tired to take her hair of it's messy braid before having her coffee (before she had lopped it all off in frustration one night).
But the moment where Alma saw her mother in Julieta the most was when she and her eldest had gotten in a fight over the Matriarch’s loud and vocal disapproval of Agustín Rojas Valdez.
“You can not control every single aspect of my life! I love him! And if you don’t accept that, then we’ll just leave!”
------------------------------------------------------------
Alma was four the last time she saw either of her mother's padres.
She didn't remember most of what had occurred.
In fact, all she remembered was that one moment the familia was having dinner and the next her mother was fighting with her mother.
“This is MY life and I refuse to let you control it any longer! Andre is a good man and I will not allow you to continue disrespecting him and our family by insinuating I made a mistake!” Alba had said, arms crossed, chin raised, and a glare in her eyes. “if you can't accept that, then we'll just leave!”
And so they did.
------------------------------------------------------------
Alma stared at her daughter.
Julieta stared right back at her, chin raised. Arms crossed. And a glare in her eyes.
Looking so much like her abuela had—though she'd never know it—just forty years younger.
And maybe, Alma could have continued to argue. Could have risked it like her own grandmother had—but she didn't. Very aware of just how similar her daughter was to her own mother. “Very well.”
Ignoring Julieta's gobsmacked look, Alma turned on her heel and headed to her room. Hoping to shake the spirit of her mother out of her mind before dinner.
------------------------------------------------------------
Pepa, meanwhile, reminded her a lot of her sister-in-law, Alejandra.
Her younger brother, Raimi's, wife.
Alejandra was a wild woman, who participated in sword fighting and liked taxidermy. Her emotions could change on a dime, and she took everything so seriously.
Her family had a miracle of their own: The female Yees could shapeshift into beasts to protect themselves, and the shift was often tied to their emotional states.
Very much like Pepa’s weather powers.
“TOUCH MY HERMANO AGAIN AND I'LL FRY YOU!”
------------------------------------------------------------
“Touch my betrothed again—” Alejandra snarled, towering over two men who had been giving Raimi trouble in her red panda form.
Which wouldn't have been very intimidating if not for the fact she was taller than the homes in their village.
"ALEJANDRA, DON'T—"
“—and I'LL RIP YOU LIMB FROM LIMB!”
The men never bothered Alma's brother again and it was in that moment that Alma knew that no other woman would ever be good enough for her brother in her eyes.
------------------------------------------------------------
“JOSEFA ALEJANDRA INÉS MADRIGAL BOTERO, DON'T YOU DARE!”
And just like Alejandra, Pepa didn't listen to Alma either.
------------------------------------------------------------
Her little Bruno reminded her of both hers, and Pedro’s, fathers.
Her father, Andre, was a shy but playful man. He was a local actor, which Bruno seemed to embrace wholeheartedly.
“My true gift is acting, I always liked to say.” Bruno had joked on numerous occasions before he inevitably put on a show for his sobrinos and their friends with his rats.
------------------------------------------------------------
“Ah, but my dear children, my true gift is acting!” Her father said with a smile on his face, winking— earning a squeal of laughter from a then, three year old, Raimi.
Alma still denied it to this day, but it had earned a snort from her too.
------------------------------------------------------------
Bruno resembled Pedro's father, Fernando, greatly physically. But that didn't mean that their personalities didn't lack similarities.
Like both Bruno and Andre, Ferndando was introverted and shy. He was an animal lover, and just generally goofy, from what Alma remembered of him.
He was also an anxious wreck a lot of the time, something that Bruno unfortunately inherited.
Along with the superstitions.
------------------------------------------------------------
The first time Fernando had met Alma, he'd knocked on wood three times—muttering under his breath—and had thrown salt over his shoulder.
Just barely missing her.
“We don't get a lot of guests.” Pedro had smiled sheepishly at her.
------------------------------------------------------------
Alma sighed, watching as Bruno threw salt over his shoulder—causing it to get in little Camilo’s hair.
Much to Pepa’s fury.
It seemed like Alma would never be able to stop seeing her fallen friends and family in her children or their children.
(Mirabel and Camilo were so much like Pedro —).
It was as if she was being haunted by them….

Treasure Planet AU
Here's another AU for you all!
Note: Isabela, Luisa and Mirabel don't exist in this AU and you will see why.
Enjoy!
When he was a child, Camilo was facinated about pirates sailing around the galaxy, as well as the legendary treasure planet. His aunt Julieta would often read these stories to him before bed, and those were the best memories Camilo had of his childhood.
Things weren't always good tho...
For as long as he could remember, Camilo was raised by his aunt. Or at least, she was the only one who was there and cared for him, like a mother should...
Yes, Camilo did remember his parents, but not in a good light. their names were Pepa and Félix, and it was crystal clear that they didn't want to be parents. They often went out, dumping him at his aunt's restaurant or even leaving him alone at home. He may barely know his older sister, but he couldn't blame her for getting out and moving in with her boyfriend the second she could.
But regardless, Camilo wanted to make them proud, to make them notice him and finally care for him, but that never happened...
When he was 12, he woke up to see his parents outside walking to a vehicle. Camilo instantly thought the obvious, and rushed downstairs and outside to try and catch up with them. But he was too late, and his parents took off without even looking at him...
His aunt Julieta took him in after that, and grandma Alma visited often, but it was never the same...
As a result, Camilo started acting out. He skipped school and got in trouble with the law frequently, to a point where Julieta didn't know what to do anymore.
Well, that changed when an escape pod landed near the restaurant. Camilo went to investigate, and found a wounded pirate clinging to a chest.
"Beware the cyborg..." The pirate said. Camilo didn't understand what he meant, so he took the pirate in question to the restaurant for shelter.
Julieta and Alma were obviously confused as heck.
Although the former tried to heal the pirate, but he didn't make it...
He did give Camilo a weird looking ball. It looked ancient...
And the pirate's last words? "Beware the cyborg..."
There was no time to proces what just happened, as someone started a fire in the restaurant. Luckily, Alma, Camilo and Julieta managed to escape, but the restaurant and Julie's home destroyed...
They went to Alma's small house for shelter, and discovered that the weird ball was actually a map of the whole galaxy. Treasure Planet was located as well...
So, Camilo suggested a plan. He and Alma would board a ship and try find treasure planet so that they could get at least some gold to rebuild the restaurant. Julieta heavily disagreed to this, but eventually gave in after making her son and mother promise to be careful.
So, Camilo and Alma went on their way, and boarded the ship of Captain Ozvaldo Ortiz.
While Alma was assigned to help the captain due to her old age, Camilo was assigned to the kitchen, having to help a cyborg named Agustín Rojas...
