I've posted about this fic before, actually. I've never seen Pacific Rim. I have no interest in seeing Pacific Rim. This is a Pacific Rim AU- and it is genuinely one of the best things I've read in a long time. The Klapollo and Narumitsu are great in this fic, but the sibling relationship between Apollo and Trucy is the true focus, and where it really shines. I'm not a huge fan of high stakes action most of the time, but I was on the edge of my seat reading this fic. (This one is rated Mature for swearing and adult humor)

this was partly inspired by this tiktok. i’m a trial attorney irl and wanted to chime in with my personal headcanons based on the kind of counsel i frequently deal with. for legal reasons, this is a joke.

seungcheol & jihoon — watch out for these two. they’re going to be unassuming & agreeable during pre-trial hearings, and they may even give off the impression that they’re each just a lil fella 🤏🏻 in a big courtroom, but when trial comes around? x-games mode. seriously, who the fuck is that monster, and where has he been until now? even if you win, you’re gonna stumble out of the courthouse with 1% of your life force left.

jeonghan & minghao — the most infuriating thing about them is that they don’t put on much of a case at all?? they just?? gaslight their way through it?? they manage to grab hold of a single, relatively insignificant thread, and they pull and pull and pull until your immaculately structured argument completely unravels. with just a crumb of effort, they have manipulated the jury and ruined your life. rip, diva. it was a good run.

joshua & mingyu — they reek of “big law”. they both come from some giant, (inter)national firm (probably founded by a family member), and you know what? they don’t even really practice your specific area of law. it doesn’t matter. they’re well-dressed, extremely charming, and the jury doesn’t care that they’re talking circular nonsense because their eyes are so sparkly. and because their retainers/fees a) are astronomical and b) aren’t contingent, their only real goal is to make the judge fall in love with them. they succeed. in fact, they’re going golfing together next weekend 😔

junhui — sorry to this man, but he’s either asleep at the counsel table, or he’s secretly playing fruit ninja on his phone underneath said table (people still play this in the year of our lord, 2024??). he doesn’t do a thing during trial itself but will come out with the most aggressive and dramatic closing arguments you’ve ever heard before dipping out without another word. you never see him again, and you’re not even sure if he’s actually real.

soonyoung & seokmin — they’re the type to walk into the attorney conference room outside the courtroom and ask you what the case is about/who their client is. they’ve each absolutely slipped up and called the judge/magistrate “your majesty”. they have no idea what’s going on, and for some reason, you can’t even be mad at them for their incompetence? because they’re just so likable as people? do not hire these men. if you have hired one of these men, fire him immediately, and ask him to get your case file out of his base model kia rio (where he’s kept it & forgotten about it) and give it back to you, expeditiously.

wonwoo & vernon — these big-brained motherfuckers have no pulse. they’re absolutely unflappable. they never raise their voice, never react with more than a nod or a thoughtful “aaah”. they’re silent killers, though; and they’ll blow your shit up without emoting once. their reactions to getting an acquittal or preventing a multi-million dollar award in damages? “wow 😐”

seungkwan & chan — the “true believers”, 100%. they’re junior attorneys with a lot to prove. unlike most attorneys who argue their client’s position, these two fully, personally assume it. even if their client is batshit insane, they’re completely on board; they both can and will die on this hill. (ex: “your honor, the meth lab in my client’s house was created and operated by the unnamed man who lives in his truck in the woods out back. my client had no idea it was in his kitchen. look deeply into his eyes, past the glassiness, and see his innocence!”). they’ll each argue and argue and argue until they walk out hoarse, and when they lose (not due to lack of ability but because their overzealousness scares the jury), they’ll probably cry in their car in the parking lot 😕

A Trump-appointed federal judge just resigned in disgrace. Sadly, it's not one of his three SCOTUS appointments.

A Trump-appointed federal judge in Alaska abruptly and with no explanation resigned from his position last Wednesday.  Court documents made public Monday reveal that former U.S. District Judge Joshua Kindred’s resignation came after he was asked to voluntarily resign in response to a judicial investigation that found he had “an inappropriately sexualized relationship” with one of his law clerks during her clerkship and while she was an assistant district attorney and engaged in misconduct that was “pervasive and abusive.”

Basically, Joshua Kindred was acting like Trump. Of course he tried to lie his way out of his troubles.

Kindred also repeatedly lied about his misconduct during the investigation and “created a hostile work environment for his law clerks by engaging in unwanted, offensive, and abusive conduct, and treating the law clerks in a demonstrably egregious and hostile manner,” according to the 30-page court order — which was filed in May but was made public on July 8. The report reveals behind-the-scenes details of an out of control work environment created by Kindred, who was accused of repeatedly speaking with “no filter” about his sex life and receiving nude photos from a federal prosecutor whose office had frequent business before him. “We conclude that Judge Kindred’s misconduct was pervasive and abusive, constituted sexual harassment, and fostered a hostile work environment that took a personal and professional toll on multiple clerks,” the report read. At the center of the scathing report is an unnamed law clerk. The report details the allegations behind two inappropriate “sexual encounters” between the female clerk and the former judge, as well as the contents of 278 pages of text messages between the two over an 11-month period. 

A reminder that there are serious allegations of misconduct involving Republican members of the US Supreme Court which need to be investigated.

An American Voice

Since the events of 2020, we have attempted to be more active and reach out to LSU Shreveport campus. This action of outreach is meant to help student, faculty, and campus personnel be aware of a rare and unique resource that is available to them, and any visiting persons to the campus. We have just started our 2024 J.S. Noel Collection Pop-up Exhibits, we aim to highlight a vary small section of the James Smith Noel Collection that might interest various research. This time we focused on one person, Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Paul Laurence Dunbar was born in June in 1872 after the United States’ Civil War, his parents were former slaves. He was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio; and started writing from a young age. He wrote is first poem at the age of 6 and read it aloud at the age of nine for a local church congregation, “An Easter Ode.” Dunbar was 16 when he published two poems in the Dayton’s newspaper The Herald; “Our Martyred Soldiers” and “On the River” in 1888. A few years later he would write and edit Dayton’s first weekly African-American newspaper, The Tattler. Paul L. Dunbar worked with two brothers that were his high-school acquaintances to print the paper that lasted six weeks. Those brothers were Wilbur and Orville Wright, the fathers of American aviation. Dunbar was the only African-American student at Central High School in Dayton.

Dunbar’s parents had been slaves in Kentucky, following the emancipation, his mother moved to Ohio, and his father escaped before the Civil War ended. Joshua Dunbar went to Massachusetts and volunteered with the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. His parents, Matilda and Joshua, were married on Christmas Eve and Paul L. Dunbar arrived six months later. His parents had a troubled union, they separated after the birth on Paul’s sister; but his father would pass away in August in 1885 when Paul was only 13 years old. His mother played a key role in his education, she hoped her son would become a minister. He was elected president of his high school’s literary society which lead to him to become editor of the school newspaper and debate club member.

Paul Laurence Dunbar finished school in 1891 and took a job as an elevator operator to earn money for college where he hoped to study law. Dunbar had continued to write and soon a collection of poems he wanted to publish. He revisited the Wright brothers, but they no longer had a printing faculty and lead his to the United Brethren Publishing House in 1893. Oak and Ivy was soon published and he busied himself selling copies as he operated the elevator. The book contained two sections, Oak with its traditional verse; and Ivy was written in dialect.

His literary talents were recognized and Attorney Charles A. Thatcher offered to pay for college; however, his interest in law had shift to his writing. Dunbar had been encouraged by the sell of his poetry, and Thatcher helped by arranging for Dunbar to do readings in a nearby city. Psychiatrist Henry A. Tobey also took an interest and assisted in distributing Dunbar’s first book. The two contained to support Dunbar through the publication of his second collection of verse, Major and Minors, in 1896. While he was consistent at publishing, he was a reckless spender resulting in debt. He was a traditional struggling artist as he tried to support himself and his mother.

There was hope in the summer of 1896 when his second book received a positive review in Harper’s Weekly, William Dean Howells brought national attention to his poems; calling them “honest thinking and true feeling” and praising his dialectic poems. There was a growing appreciation for folk culture and black dialect. His popular works were written in the “Negro dialect” that is commonly associated with the antebellum South; though he also wrote in the Midwestern dialect that he grew-up hearing. Dunbar would write in various styles, including conversational English in poetry and novels. He is considered to be the first important African American sonnet writer. His use of the “Black dialect” in writing has been criticized as pan-handling to readers.

Dunbar was a diverse writer, he experimented with poetry, short stories, novels, plays, and a musical. He even ventured beyond the lens of the lives of African Americans and attempted to explore the struggles of a white minister. The Uncalled, Dunbar’s first novel, held similar names and themes of Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and was not well favored. It was with his venture into novel writing that he dared to cross the “color line” with his first novel which focused solely on white society. He continued to try to capture white culture but the critics found them lacking.

He moved past novel writing and began to work with two composers, Dunbar wrote the lyrics for the first musical that would be preformed by an all African-American cast on Broadway; In Dahomey. Beyond his writing career, Dunbar was also active the early civil rights movements happening in 1897. He married after a trip to the United Kingdom in 1898, Alice Ruth Moore was also a poet and teacher from New Orleans. She also published a collection of short stories, and they wrote companion poems together. There was a play in 2001 based on their relationship.

Dunbar had taken a traditional job with the Library of Congress in D.C. and with his wife in tow they moved there. However, with his wife’s urging, he left his job to focus on his writings and his public readings. This also allowed him to attend Howard University for a time. However, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1900 and his doctors suggested that drinking whisky would alleviate the symptoms. They also moved to the cold dry mountains of Colorado for his health. This resulted in trouble in Paul and Alice’s marriage, they separated in 1902 but never formally divorced.

Dunbar returned to his hometown of Dayton, Ohio in 1904 to be with his mother, his health continued to decline and depression consumed his mind. Paul Laurence Dunbar died from tuberculosis at age 33 on February 9, 1906 and was interred in Dayton.

Dunbar did not become one of the forgotten poets of literature, his use of dialect in his poetry allowed for his works to remain relevant and important in poetic criticism. We of the James Smith Noel Collection at LSU Shreveport are proud to retain and maintain a small collection of his works and show case their importance.

I had Larcei for over a year and honestly I'm really happy with what I did with her (even if rereading her stuff makes me cringe). So as much as I love her I have no strong reason to pick her up... apart from that swordmaster drabble I never got around to.

Do you believe you have a type of character you gravitate towards writing? (If you filled this out last year, has this changed in any way?) There's overlap between the 'old' and 'new' gens of my muses. There's a hotheaded sword girl, a mage with issues :tm: and a cute blond guy. I think I have an easier time writing characters that have a positive outlook, and say what they mean.

Do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? Idk really. I don't think I'm that good at writing sad shit, so muses that have heavier stuff going on I'd struggle with.

Joshua Lippencott, Ohio inmate A765826, born 1988, incarceration intake in August 2019 at age 31, scheduled for discharge June 2030

The 31-year-old former Gnadenhutten, Ohio area man who pled guilty to murder and manslaughter charges for the 2017 death of David A. Robinson was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

The sentence handed down by Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court Judge Edward O’Farrell comes 22-months after Lippencott got out of his car on Petry Hill Road and punched the 62-year-old Gnadenhutten man in the face for pushing his lawnmower out into the road in front of him. Robinson ended up coming down with bacterial meningitis and died at the hospital a week later. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled his illness and his death came about as a direct result of his injuries.

At his sentencing hearing, Lippencott asked the judge to vacate the guilty pleas he entered earlier. He said he thought he was accepting a previous version of the agreement.

“I wasn’t aware that was the plea agreement, and if that’s the case, I want to change my plea to not guilty. You had sent me a copy of a plea agreement much earlier that said that that charge, count one of murder, would be dismissed with prejudice. That’s what I thought I was pleading to.”

The judge denied Lippencott’s request to back out of the agreement at that time but assured him he would look into the matter.

“You are making that request. I’m telling you I’m not going to let that happen. Now, if I discover when I listen to the plea hearing that what you just said is accurate, then I’m going to get you back in this courtroom. I can promise you that.”

Robinson’s daughter Bobbie Trolio spoke out during the hearing saying she and her family were tired of Lippencott’s antics including trying to negotiate a furlough to spend time with his mother and firing his second attorney the day ahead of his trial.

“He’s played a game., a straight game. It’s been 22 months since my dad passed away that we’ve been playing this game of firing an attorney, hiring an attorney, firing an attorney, now I’m going to represent myself, now I don’t want to have a jury trial, everything else like that. It’s been a game, and he has wasted my family’s time. We have been looking for closure, and we deserve closure.”

Lippencott’s indictment also included one count of felonious assault and a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. The judge sentenced him to two years on the assault charge to run concurrently with the 11-year sentence along with five years of post-release sanctions. The plea agreement he signed prohibits him from filing an appeal.

The judge did not give Lippencott the furlough he had sought to visit his mother before going to prison.

A transgender teenager from Pennsylvania has admitted to killing her 12-year-old friend while they were watching Netflix and then posting photos of the child’s body on Instagram.

Ash Cooper, 18, who was originally charged as Joshua Cooper, pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges including third-degree murder, possession of an instrument of crime and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence in the death of Morgan Connors, Fox News reported.

The two were watching Netflix on Nov. 25, 2022, at a trailer park in Bensalem Township when Morgan got up to use the bathroom and Cooper decided to clean and organize her father’s gun safe, according to court documents obtained by the Bucks County Courier Times.

It is unclear what happened next, but police would later receive a call from the mother of one of Cooper’s acquaintances, who said she saw Morgan’s body in a video call on Instagram.

“From the call, investigators learned that a juvenile witness was on an Instagram video chat with an acquaintance, later identified as Cooper, who claimed to have just killed someone,” the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

“In that video chat, Cooper flipped the video image and showed the legs and feet of someone covered in blood.”

Cooper then asked the acquaintance to help clean up and dispose of the body, at which point, the teen told her mother.

When authorities arrived, they found Cooper “running out of the back of the trailer.”

In the bathroom, they found Morgan with her pants around her leg and dead from a gunshot wound, according to the Courier Times.

They also found towels drenched in blood, cleaning supplies and the strong odor of bleach emanating from the bathroom — suggesting Cooper tried to clean up the crime scene.

Upon her arrest, Cooper insisted, “It was an accident,” an affidavit says.

She never revealed the motive behind the killing, prosecutors said, but an affidavit states that she told police she had been in a sexual relationship with the victim, according to 6 ABC.

Cooper’s attorney also said in court she had a “difficult upbringing” and felt “significant remorse and sorrow.”

Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Finley also expressed his concerns about Cooper’s “troubling history of conduct and treatment of other people” and the lack of any “real explanation for what happened.”

He sentenced Cooper Thursday to 15 to 40 years behind bars, followed by seven years of probation, and recommended that she be placed in a therapeutic community within the state prison system.

As a legal adult, she is also required to undergo a psychological and psychiatric evaluation.

She was just 27 years old.   Greenberg's parents have fought for years to undo the official paperwork ruling Ellen's death a suicide. Lawyers for her parents have alleged the investigation was mishandled. "We don't believe our daughter committed suicide," Ellen's father, Joshua Greenberg told Joe Holden last year. [...] The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office reviewed the case in 2019 and ruled the death a suicide, and in 2022, the office under then-Attorney General Josh Shapiro reaffirmed that ruling after again reviewing the case between December 2021 and January 2022.

Semifinals Rounds

we're now going into the semifinals for each of the smaller brackets, which means we have 16 characters left across all our four brackets.

once we know who has won each bracket, the 4 winners of the brackets will also compete each other so we can find our overall winner :)

to make things a bit quicker, ive decided to release all of the semifinal rounds with a couple days of each other instead of a week for each one. (the polls will all run for a week though still - there will just be overlap of which brackets have open polls)

Hitoshi: I haven't been able to find an English-speaking Japanese VA that fits him yet, the closest I have is the Japanese VA of Tetsuo Takahashi (Junichi Suwabe) from Demi-chan wa Kataritai.

Franziska is L'arachel instead of Cormag :3 L'arachel obviously would not be as mean but I can see her jokingly calling Eirika a foolishly fool because she presented the wrong evidence. Then immediately also flashbanging her with a light spell. L'arachel and Lyon being adopted siblings is also just!! Yeagh!!!! L'arachel says Lyon is her little brother and he doesn't bother to correct her because he doesn't really have friends other than Eirika and Ephraim but he hasn't seen them since pre DL-6

Mia and Godot are Selena and Valter instead of Natasha and Joshua cause ough Natasha and Joshua are good but Selena works better as Mia cause of a spoiler for Ephraim's route and Joshua doesn't really go beast mode like Valter does </3
