We (@tessartist & me) met a cool Johnny cosplayer, and saw two other people dressed as their V's. I had a few people who recognized my cosplay.
I planned to meet Peter Cullen but his line was very long. Plus I was very tired from walking all day, and the entry line put me in a POTs episode.
I also got a Cyberpunk Edgerunners poster and bag w/ Keanu on it that says "Keani hold your things?"
It was super fun over all :3

The Rural Alberta Advantage Interview: The Ultimate Arbiters
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Like all bands still dealing with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Rural Alberta Advantage had to adapt. Due to the worldwide pause on live music, they were unable to follow 2017′s excellent The Wild the way they knew best: writing, workshopping, playing live, then finalizing. Fast-forward, and they surprise released an EP, The Rise (Saddle Creek), last spring, announcing the return of founding keyboardist Amy Cole, their first music in five years because they could simply no longer wait. They survived by remotely sharing demos, ignoring the typical album release cycle, releasing this batch of songs soon after they were finalized. Ready to tour and then play some more unreleased material, the band launched on a U.S. tour, their first since the pandemic, in May 2022. By the third show, lead vocalist and guitarist Nils Edenloff, followed by the rest of the band, tested positive for COVID. As many bands two years in had the pandemic in their rearview mirror, The Rural Alberta Advantage were left wondering when it would seem a bit more normal.
Thankfully, the band was able to play a handful of shows in Canada during the latter half of 2022, finally bringing The Rise to the stage and even--yes--debuting an unreleased song. That tune, “Plague Dogs”, was released as a standalone single last month with the announcement of what will (hopefully) be their first full U.S. tour post-COVID. (No, “Plague Dogs” is not a pandemic reference; it was inspired by the Richard Adams novel of the same name.) Though The Rural Alberta Advantage are planning to release a full-length later this year, “a culmination of everything we’ve been working on this whole time,” as Cole told me over Zoom earlier this month, they aren’t taking their time for granted. Instead, they want to put as many songs out into the world as they can and play for as many people as possible. Their tour starts tomorrow night at Lincoln Hall in Chicago.
Read my interview with Cole below, edited for length and clarity, about “Plague Dogs”, The Rise, and the history of the band.
Since I Left You: It seemed fitting to me that the debut of “Plague Dogs” coincided with the announcement of these tour dates, because the video shows live footage and the song has such a live sound. Was that something the you purposefully did?
Amy Cole: Yeah, it was. It sort of always is. It wasn’t because of the live video that we wanted to make the song sound more live. We’re always trying to capture what we sound like live. We’ve had varying degrees of success over the years [doing it], but it’s always our goal, because we consider ourselves a live band. I’m going to rehearsals right after this, and it’s when the three of us are in a room together that we feel the best. With Gavin Gardiner, who has been a friend for many years and has been the one recording and producing these last few songs with us, we’re able to get that [live feel.]
SILY: It definitely has a loud-quiet-loud dynamic going on. Was that also something the band went into recording trying to do?
AC: A lot of our songs do that. [laughs] We weren’t trying to rip ourselves off, but we love playing with dynamics in our songs. Whenever we can try to do it in an inventive way we don’t feel like we’ve done before, we do. This time, there are all these ups and downs and dropouts, and we really leaned into that aspect of the song. We go by feel: we work songs to death until we all feel really great about them. We’re really happy with how “Plague Dogs” turned out.
SILY: I’ve never seen you live before. Do your songs tend to take on new life live, arrangement-wise or in any other way?
AC: Yes, 1000 percent. That’s what was so challenging about The Rise. It was the first time we weren’t able to do what we normally do, which is start a song, get it to a place where we feel like we can try it out live, and then go on tour and road test that song, see what’s working and what isn’t, so by the time we get into the studio, we’ve played it live for a bunch of people and feel like we’ve got it to a really good place [to record]. Because of the pandemic, we weren’t able to do that with the songs on The Rise. That was really challenging for us. We were going in a lot more blind than normally. “Plague Dogs” we were able to play live quite a few times for people during the shows we did back in the fall. When we were recording, we felt really good about where we were at with it; we were feeling really encouraged by its response at our shows. When we went in to record it with Gavin, we knew what parts needed to be bigger, what parts needed to be smaller. That bridge in the middle didn’t come up until our last mixing session, where we thought, “Let’s amp the bass up four times as much as it is compared to the rest of the song, and let’s lean into the organ.”
SILY: Was there a different way you went about getting the feedback you needed for The Rise?
AC: Not really. Each of us played demos for close, trusted friends and loved ones. Sometimes, you’ll get a good, honest response, but sometimes they’re gonna be nice. What’s lucky with the three of us is we really trust each other’s taste. Even if it was just one of us not feeling it, we’ll listen and keep going and hacking away until the three of us are good with it. The ultimate arbiter is the three of us, so we really had to rely on that because we didn’t have a live audience telling us something was good or okay or not great. Luckily, we feel like it worked out for The Rise, but we’re happy our new songs we’re recording, we’re playing live, listening for feedback and seeing what’s hitting.
SILY: “Plague Dogs”’ launching point was the Richard Adams novel of the same name. Do you find that films or books are often the origins for your songs?
AC: I’m speaking for Nils, but sometimes he gets the idea for songs from TV or films or art. A lot of Hometowns and our first couple records was inspired by real stories from Nils’ personal life, as tons of songwriters do. A lot of those songs were about people and places he was thinking about from back home. That’s where he drew a lot of inspiration in the early days. If he were the one answering, he’d say inspiration comes from a lot of places for him. Plague Dogs happened to be the inspiration for this song, which made a lot of people [incorrectly] think it was inspired by the pandemic. [laughs]
SILY: How do you think the band has grown over time, instrumentally, lyrically, or in general?
AC: We’ve grown in the ways that people do over the 15, close to 20 years we’ve been a band. We’ve definitely gotten a lot better musically. We’ve learned a lot about making music, writing songs. We all know each other a lot better. We’ve been through a lot together, and we know how to collaborate. We know how to listen to each other and present our ideas to each other. Anyone who has worked in a group would understand this, but people have really different styles of working and communicating, and it takes a long time to learn how to best work with another person. We’ve gotten to a place where we’re super comfortable with each other and get each other, and now we sound tighter.
SILY: What else are you specifically looking forward to on this tour besides road testing new material?
AC: I’m sure it’s the answer every band gives: getting to play in front of people after not being able to do so after a number of years. We never took it lightly, but we’ll never take it for granted again. To be on stage and get to be the ones performing is one of the best experiences you can have as a musician, playing your songs in front of people who want to hear them. The fact that we’re going to get to do that again is an incredible gift. We weren’t sure we’d ever get to do this again. There were long stretches where we didn’t know what the future held for us, but we’re so happy it’s this.
SILY: Is there anything you’ve been listening to, watching, or reading lately you’ve enjoyed?
AC: I watched a bit of Wednesday. My friend edited the show, including the iconic dance sequence that went viral recently, so I was very excited for him. I watched Fleishman Is in Trouble. I love The Amber Ruffin Show, which I hope comes back. She’s a writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers, which I also watch all the time. I just watched “Seth and Lizzo Go Daydrinking” last night. I loved it. It was so hilarious. Lizzo’s amazing. I was happy she won Record of the Year.
I was listening to Television just before we got on. I’ve been listening to them a lot the last couple days.
SILY: Mourning Tom Verlaine?
AC: Yeah. Listening to how much of the seeds of so many bands are in them.

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine (Shawn Levy, 2024)
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Dafne Keen, Jon Favreau, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes, Channing Tatum, Chris Evans, Henry Cavill, Wunmi Mosaku, Aaron Stanford, Tyler Mane, Karan Sonni, Brianna Hildebrand. Screenplay: Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Shawn Levy. Cinematography: George Richmond. Production design: Ray Chan. Film editing: Shane Reid, Dean Zimmerman. Music: Rob Simonsen.
Raucous, rude, and raunchy, Deadpool & Wolverine holds nothing sacred, even the production companies that made it, as the irrepressible Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) teams up with the grouchy Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to take on the Time Variance Authority, represented by Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen), and Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) in the Void and elsewhere. You might wonder how Deadpool could team with Wolverine since the latter died in James Mangold's 2017 film Logan. It involves traveling through the multiverse and encountering all the various Wolverines that exist in other timelines, including one known as The Cavillrine, a cameo by Henry Cavill. The Wolverine Deadpool chooses turns out to be the worst Wolverine, someone reviled in his own universe for bringing about the deaths of all the other X-Men. The arc of Wolverine's story in the movie turns out to be a quest for redemption. The multiverse trope itself gets lampooned by treating its actors as moving through their roles as if through other universes than the one they inhabit, the Marvel Universe. So there are allusions to Jackman's career as a performer in musicals and to Reynolds's older films like The Proposal (Anne Fletcher, 2009) and Van Wilder (Walt Becker, 2002). Chris Evans's appearance in the film is also a bit of role-switching. Deadpool at first thinks he's Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, until he reveals himself as Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch, the earlier Marvel role Evans played in Fantastic Four (Tim Story, 2005). Evans's brief performance in Deadpool & Wolverine includes one of the funniest speeches in the film, a foul-mouthed diatribe about Cassandra that's so good it gets repeated in the end credits. Thoroughly mindless and thoroughly entertaining, Deadpool & Wolverine is the superhero movie to end all superhero movies. Well, we can dream, can't we?

Commons leader Penny Mordaunt and former minister Jacob Rees-Mogg are among senior Tories to have lost their seats, as the party suffers a heavy election defeat.
Ms Mordaunt, who was tipped as a future Tory leadership contender, saw her majority of more than 15,000 overturned in Portsmouth North.
Mr Rees-Mogg, a former business secretary, lost in North East Somerset and Hanham, with Labour overturning his 16,000 majority.
He told the BBC he wouldn't "blame anybody other than myself" and that it had been "a very bad night for the Conservatives".
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk and Michelle Donelan are among a clutch of cabinet ministers to lose their seats.
But Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, who had been seen as vulnerable in his Godalming and Ash constituency, managed to hold on with slender 891 majority.
'Sobering verdict'
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded the election, speaking after he was re-elected in Richmond and Northallerton.
He said the electorate had “delivered a sobering verdict” on the Tories, and apologised to those in his party who had lost their seats. He said he had called Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on winning.
Speaking after losing her seat, Ms Mordaunt said her party had "taken a battering because it failed to honour the trust that people had placed in it".
She warned against "talking to an ever smaller slice of ourselves," adding, "if we want again to be the natural party of government, then our values must be the people's".
In other high profile Tory losses:
Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer lost to Labour in Plymouth Moor View
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan lost to the Liberal Democrats in Chichester, a West Sussex seat the Tories have held for a century
Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer lost Ely and East Cambridgeshire, also to the Liberal Democrats
Chief Whip Simon Hart - in charge of party discipline - lost to Plaid Cymru in Caerfyrddin, as the Tories lost all their seats in Wales
Former justice secretary Sir Robert Buckland, who also lost his seat, told the BBC his party faced "electoral Armageddon".
He said too many Conservatives had focused on "personal agendas and jockeying for position" instead of "concentrating on doing the job that they were elected to do".
"I've watched colleagues strike poses, write inflammatory op-eds, and say stupid things they have no evidence for, instead of concentrating on doing the job that they were elected to do," the former justice secretary said.
Asked whether he was referring to former home secretary Suella Braverman, who days before polls opened published an article in the Daily Telegraph strongly criticising the government, he said: "Yes, and I'm afraid that's not an isolated example."
"I'm fed up of personal agendas and jockeying for position. The truth is now with the Conservatives facing electoral Armageddon, it's going to be like a group of bald men arguing over a comb.
Sir Robert said for the party to move further to the right would be a "disastrous mistake" that "would send us into the abyss".
Speaking earlier, before his defeat, Sir Jacob said it was “clearly a terrible night” for his party, that had come to take its “core vote for granted”.
“We need to win voters at every single election. If you take your base for granted... your voters will look to other parties.”
He thought the party had made a mistake by ousting Boris Johnson, who led it to victory in the 2019 election but was forced to step down as prime minister in 2022 following a series of scandals.
Former cabinet office minister Steve Baker, who BBC projections gave less than a 1% chance of holding onto his seat, said his party was having an “incredibly difficult night”.
He said Rishi Sunak had a "brilliant mind" but acknowledged he had made mistakes during the campaign, including the decision to leave D-Day commemorations early.

Malcolm McLaren watching Johnny Rotten do...something...with an ashtray in a not as rare as you might think moment of peace between the two. photo taken by Bob Gruen in October of 1976
ive always been fascinated by their relationship. they were a match made in heaven (or in hell if you were a hippie or member of the british government in the 70s) artistically speaking and ive always wondered what they could have done if they had been able to continue to work together...unfortunately i doubt that would have ever happened as they were never truly on the same page about things- be it art, ideology, or morality
I suppose there was a matter of who was in charge. They were very close, they used to go off for meals together in ’76, and long chats, and that ceased at some stage. Mutual suspicion. - Sophie Richmond, The England's Dreaming Tapes

504. The 1981 Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade (11.26.1981), part 1
Ok, the parade. I was sad to know that there is another version of this parade out there with local-ish commercials from Richmond, Virginia but the quality of the parade is t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e. Maybe we can at least visit some of the local commercials at the end of the entry.
We started off with a doozy of a commercial for the made for TV movie The Seeker starring Johnny Gage from Emergency!. It was the 3pm Money Movie! Imagine watching this on Thanksgiving. I mean, we didn't have the dog show back then.
Oh wow I love those costumes.
Our boy Ed McMahon hosted again. He totally runs over a Rockette! He said he fell off of Tara the elephant?! I hope he was joking. Ed sounds really rough though.
Regis reports that Snoopy made it to the parade this year! Remember last year he didn't:
Why was Snoopy near shards of glass the year before?!
What the heck is that?! He just snuck up behind Reeg while he was promoting his upcoming morning program.
So Ronald and Co. were the original late night McDonalds closing crew.
I don't know how to feel about Tara the rollerskating elephant. Unless she woke up one morning and told her keepers "I wanna rollerskate", then I'm not cool with it. She skated to that Steve Winwood "when you see a chance, take it" song. Ed is still talking about trying to ride Tara, and they're still talking about Regis' new show.

Happy Birthday, Hannah Waddingham
Today marks the birthday of actor, singer, performer and, I suppose, presenter, Hannah Waddingham.
Eagle-eyed readers, followers of my socials and fans of the podcast will note I became a fan of Waddingham while watching Ted Lasso, and I continue to enjoy her work and joie de vivre.
This year, Waddingham completed Season 3 of Ted Lasso where she played the complex and often very funny owner of Richmond AFC, Rebecca Welton. She also co-starred in a BBC/ PBS version of Tom Jones, where she played the manipulative but vivacious Lady Bellaston (and more or less stole the show). She's been Emmy nominated for both parts.
Last Fall she had a key but small part in Hocus Pocus 2, and a cameo role that was maybe the best part of the Disney+ Willow series.
Waddingham also hosted the Oliviers (the British Tonys) and Eurovision 2023. This Christmas, she has a holiday special coming to Apple+ that was recorded a while back, and, according to those who were there, is pretty great. So keep your eyes open for that. She's also leant her voice to the upcoming cartoon, Krapopolis, from Dan Harmon. She mentioned a possible album this year as well. We'll see. Oh, and she'll be in the next Mission Impossible movie.
She's selling Pepperidge Farm cookies (they're pretty good, y'all), and has been part of a collab between Johnnie Walker, the Women's Sports Foundation and Justwomenssports.com to encourage people to watch women's sports. And drink Johnnie Walker, presumably. Done and done. And, she's out there on the SAG-AFTRA picket lines.
Anyway, busy year for Waddingham, but all good stuff. Not bad for someone you didn't hear of before 2020 unless you were hitting a lot of West End shows (I was not).
I have no idea what she'll be up to next, if Ted Lasso is truly over, etc... But we'll keep tuning in.

I've randomly had some over analysing thoughts about classifying goth characters in media and essentially I think we can create the following categories
Explicit Goth
This character is described as a goth, (either in universe/character descriptions or word of god) will generally aesthetically be goth, and will often in some way depicted as engaging with the subculture
Examples: Gerard Keay, Sam Manson, The Goth Kids from South Park*, Richmond Avenal, Crimson and Ennui, Gwen, Nemi, Vince Noir**
(*Don't @ me they count ok)
(**Briefly, he still counts)
Implicit Goth/Coded Goth
This character is not described as a goth but is depicted in a way people are like 'This character would be Goth' this includes characters from settings where the Goth subculture doesn't exist
Examples: Death of the Endless, Raven from Teen Titans, Ruby Gloom, Misa Amane*, Nancy Downs, Alice Liddell (American McGee),
(*I am not quite sure if I would pit Misa in Implicit or Resonate I can see either, I would say she belongs here rather than Surface goth or Mislabeled Goth)
Resonate Goth
Potentially a subsection of the Implicit Goth but these are characters that are not described as goths, and likely were not coded as Goths as these characters in some cases pre date the Goth subculture but have resonated with the subculture enough they've been adopted and often are an influence on the subculture
Examples: Lydia Deetz, The Hex Girls, Dracula, The Addams Family, Neo and Trinity, Eric Draven, Jack Skellington,
Surface Goth
These characters often aesthetically look goth and could potentially fall into Implicit or Resonate but often do not have quite enough substance to put them in either section. I think this type tends to pop up a lot in kid's cartoons and sitcoms etc
Examples: Mavis, Laetitia Bowers , Pandora
Mislabeled Goth/Non Specific Alternative
The character is described as a goth either in canon or by fans but doesn't actually quite fit, these characters are often alternative but this is often a case of 'anyone wearing black and kind of moody is a goth obvs' depending on when these characters were created they tend to actually be Emos, this character type also pops up a lot in kid's cartoons and sitcoms
Examples: Gaz (Invader Zim), Robby Valentino, Johnny and Lacie
