I have finally updated.

That's right gang. It's been a long time, but at last I have another update on my unending TMBS fic that ensures I will never be free. This chapter goes out to everyone dealing with the hurricane. You're in my prayers, and I hope this provides you something good to read while you're hiding out from the storm. Sorry for the typos, it's been a long day.

Chapter Summary: After losing his friends Violet and John, Nicholas steps aboard the M.V. Shortcut where he meets new friends, Captain Noland and Officer Zhao. However, he quickly finds that the journey will not be as smooth as he presumed. Meanwhile, John Cole has a difficult day at work, Ledroptha Curtain learns to manage life on his own, and a young girl comes up with a brilliant idea.

“You’re probably the nicest person I’ve met before.” Nicholas shrugged, smiling shyly at John.

John, meanwhile, was standing there gobsmacked. “Nick–” He began in a choked-off protest. “Nick, I’m just a normal, decent person. There’s literally nothing special about me. Are– Are you okay?”

“Oh.” Nicholas’ face fell, and looked down at his shoes. “I guess I don’t have a lot to compare it to.” He mumbled. “There weren’t that many kids at my old orphanage who talked to me. I mean, the adults did a little, but there was never someone who really wanted to talk to me, like you do. Everyone just kind of ignored me.”

John paused, imagining Nick, tiny little Nick, pushed around in a cold sea of strangers, most of them older all of them uncaring. He felt a quiet horror creeping over him, laying its heavy hands on his shoulders and whispering in his ear: “He didn’t have anyone. He was all alone, and there was no one to care about him. No one at all.”

“Nick…” He bent down to get a better look at the other boy’s face, feeling his heart clench when he noticed the tears dripping down the smaller child’s nose.

“It’s– It’s fine–” Nicholas was blinking hard, trying to pass it off as some sort of casual, non-crying type of water coming from his eyes.

“C’mere,” John scooped him up into a hug, knowing he did the right thing when he felt Nicholas’ arms tighten around his neck, tears dampening his shirt. “Aw, Nick, it’s okay.”

The last time I wrote about Violet Hopefield, people got mad. But I think dropping this lore will make up for it.

Thank you again to everyone who gave me information about Violet and John to write show versions of them.

Summary: After leaving his brother behind, young Nicholas finds companionship in his new friends, John Cole and Violet Hopefield, but the memory of his brother and guilt of what he did prove difficult to escape. Meanwhile, Nathaniel waits patiently for his brother to come back, though each day without him becomes harder than the last.

I think it’d be really funny if Mr. Benedict and Mr. Curtain got mistaken for each other a few times before either even realizes they have a twin, leading to much confusion.

Curtain: Stop pestering me, plebeian.

Nicholas goes to a restaurant he’s never been to before only to be told that he’s been banned for making a waiter cry over ice last time he was there

One thing I love about mysterious benedict society is the diversity of the characters like we have Black characters (sticky, his parents, and rhonda!!!) and Indian characters (miss perumal and her mother—who are also immigrants!!!) and Taiwanese characters (tai li and his aunt claire!!!) and sooo many female characters not just one girl thrown in for Diversity™️ (kate!! constance!! rhonda!! number two!! miss perumal!! violet!! martina!! claire li!! diana rothschild!! and so many others!! and they’re all different with unique personalities and ugh i could go on and on about how wonderful the female characters are) and we’ve got characters with neurological disorders (four characters with narcolepsy!! and their narcolepsy is important to who they are and it’s important to the plot!! and also it’s not presented just as “silly mr benedict always falling asleep hehe” but instead they actually talk about the nightmares and the sleep paralysis and such which i think is cool) and we’ve got deaf/hard of hearing characters (miss perumal’s mother!! VIOLET!!!!!) and then also there’s john whose face is covered in scars and they mention it when he’s first introduced but then it’s not mentioned much again bc his personality is what’s important!! basically there’s so much to love about these characters and the way they’re written
