A whopping 80% of voters in the United States want the federal government to create a paid family and medical leave program, according to a new survey released Friday.

Navigator, a progressive polling firm, found that 89% of Democrats, 76% of Independents, and 70% of Republicans support the establishment of a federal program that would enable people to take paid time away from work to attend to serious illnesses or provide care for loved ones, including sick or disabled family members and newborn or newly adopted children. Just 12% of voters are opposed.

A majority (52%) of voters—including 68% of Democrats, 57% of Black Americans, and 61% of Hispanic Americans—would be more likely to vote for a candidate who publicly supports paid family and medical leave, according to the survey.

In addition, over half (51%) of voters—including 65% of Democrats, 58% of Black Americans, and 61% of Hispanic Americans—would be more motivated to vote in the upcoming midterm elections if Congress supported the passage of a national paid family and medical leave program, the poll found.

"Our nation's leaders must stop ignoring what the data tell us time and time again—that paid family and medical leave is a critical support that families need, it is what Americans want, and it is what they deserve," Jocelyn Frye, president of the National Partnership for Women & Families, said in a statement.

Dawn Huckelbridge, director of Paid Leave for All, told Common Dreams that the new survey "mirrors what Paid Leave for All Action has seen in midterm battleground states—4 in 5 voters support paid family and medical leave, and this is an issue that motivates all voters, but particularly the progressive base and key persuadable groups like Independent women."

"Paid leave is an issue that all candidates should be running on—and then delivering," Huckelbridge added.

Six arguments in favor of paid leave were deemed convincing by more than three-quarters of respondents.

Voters were compelled by the fact that the U.S. is one of only seven countries in the world without federally guaranteed paid family and medical leave; far outpacing the U.S., the average length of maternity leave worldwide is more than six months.

The need for a federal paid family and medical leave program was clear to an overwhelming majority of respondents after they were informed that just 15% of workers in the U.S.—typically high-wage managers—receive such benefits through their employers.

Also persuasive were studies showing that paid leave policies increase the likelihood that women return to the workforce following childbirth and decrease reliance on public assistance programs.

The three most convincing arguments for paid leave focused on how it:

• enhances household well-being, including better early childhood development and more economic security for parents;

• improves health outcomes for infants, mothers, and the elderly; and

• boosts workplace morale and reduces employee turnover.

In a Common Dreams opinion piece published Thursday, Vicky Badillo of the Workers Defense Project in Austin wrote that "it's time for our lawmakers to deliver what so many people are calling out for: a national paid leave policy."

"Paid leave is a human right and a matter of dignity—it's something every single one of us should have access to, regardless of who we are, where we live, or what we do," Badillo continued. "Lives are on the line."

"There is no economic and racial justice without access to paid leave," she added. "Ensuring people have the time they need to be with and care for themselves and their families is morally the right thing to do—and it also makes sense for our economy and our national well-being. Investing in paid leave will help our families, our communities, and our nation."

Poll results are based on online surveys conducted among a sample of 1,001 registered voters from September 8 to September 11.

When You're Self-Employed, Determining Maternity Leave Is a Double-Edged Sword

It's no secret that being a working mother in the United States is difficult. And while most maternity leave policies tend to be pretty straightforward, albeit inadequate, when you're self-employed, it becomes a choose-your-own-adventure situation, and freedom can be a double-edged sword: the flexibility of designing your own leave helps tremendously, but figuring out how to get paid and actually take time off requires planning, support, and research. The length of one's parental leave typically depends on the coverage provided by an employer, in line with state requirements. Self-employed expecting parents get to determine their own leaves, but this can mean they also forgo some additional protections, like a guaranteed paycheck. According to parental leave consultant Linzay Davis, a maternity leave should ideally allow the parent to focus on their health and recovery, while also bonding with their child. "What your line of work is, what your pay looks like, and what your recovery is like makes a big difference in what leave looks like," she says. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advocates for at least eight weeks of fully paid parental leave. --- Experts Featured in This Article Linzay Davis is the founder of the parental leave consulting firm The Park. Jocelyn Frye is the president of the National Partnership for Women and Families. --- Davis says a helpful leave needs to comprise two components: wage replacement and health insurance. There are typically three routes to get these: through your employer, under national law, or under state policies. When you run your own business, it's difficult to fully take time off if you rely on yourself for income. Unlike other countries with similarly developed economies, the US doesn't have any form of nationally-mandated paid leave. Many private companies offer paid parental leave, although Davis says the terms vary and are totally up to the employer. The only law on the books is the Family and Medical Leave Act, a 1993 law that guarantees workers job protections and up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year after a birth or adoption. This legislation is a starting point, but its specific eligibility requirements mean it doesn't protect everyone. Some people rely on short-term disability or paid leave offered by their state. And 13 states, such as California and New Jersey, plus the District of Columbia, offer some sort of paid parental leave programs, but these also aren't universal. Recent legislative attempts to close these gaps and enact universal paid leave haven't successfully advanced within Congress. "There isn't a national mandate that requires an employer to provide paid family or medical leave," says Jocelyn Frye, president of the National Partnership for Women and Families, a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy group that focuses on these issues. "The FMLA gives you something and it's important, but it's only one step in terms of where we need to be." Running your own business means you often can't entirely take time off during leave, or end up taking shorter leave. New Jersey-based therapist Christine M. Valentín, LCSW, runs her own therapy practice and took leave for a planned pregnancy in 2016. "I'm a planner by nature, so everything I started doing once I did get pregnant revolved around setting my life up so it was easier to manage," she tells PS. This involved working closely with each client to figure out how much support they needed from her, and making plans for them to seek other care if necessary while she was out. Valentín works out of both New Jersey and New York, but her health insurance only covered her in one state, so she stopped in-person appointments and switched to telehealth one month before her due date at the end of October. Even though there is still volatility in the U.S. economy in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the consistent theme is still the outsized impact on women, economic experts said.

The January jobs report would seem to continue to bear that out. Some 275,000 women left the workforce last month, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, compared with 71,000 men. And women make up more than half of the 7 million people considered “out of the workforce” in the report — who aren’t counted as unemployed — but who currently want to work. Overall, nearly 2.4 million women have exited the workforce since last February, compared with less than 1.8 million men.

The continued disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on working women will have lasting impacts on the nation's economy, said Jocelyn Frye, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

“Their productivity, their participation in the workforce is felt in our GDP. These are not just niche issues, these are actually issues that are critical to our economic growth,” she said. “We know and have known long before the pandemic that women are increasingly integral to the economic security of their families.”

Frye said when she looks at the January jobs numbers, “I think it shows that this is a slow recovery. It's not happening anytime soon.”read more

I'm still glad Trump and his followers are out but how the fuck is Biden going to help women impacted by Covid when he bows to the gender cult? How will Pelosi help women when the House of Representatives wants to use gender neutral language? And I really don't want to sound ageist but Biden is 78 and Pelosi is 80 I bet they would do more for struggling mothers if they were young enough to still have dependent children.

We’ve heard this before. Go back where you came from. Go back to Africa. And now, “send her back.” Black and brown people in America don’t hear these chants in a vacuum; for many of us, we’ve felt their full force being shouted in our faces, whispered behind our backs, scrawled across lockers, or hurled at us online. They are part of a pattern in our country designed to denigrate us as well as keep us separate and afraid.

As 149 African Americans who served in the last administration, we witnessed firsthand the relentless attacks on the legitimacy of President Barack Obama and his family from our front-row seats to America’s first black presidency. Witnessing racism surge in our country, both during and after Obama’s service and ours, has been a shattering reality, to say the least. But it has also provided jet-fuel for our activism, especially in moments such as these.

We stand with congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib, as well as all those currently under attack by President Trump, along with his supporters and his enablers, who feel deputized to decide who belongs here — and who does not. There is truly nothing more un-American than calling on fellow citizens to leave our country — by citing their immigrant roots, or ancestry, or their unwillingness to sit in quiet obedience while democracy is being undermined.

We are proud descendants of immigrants, refugees and the enslaved Africans who built this country while enduring the horrors of its original sin. We stand on the soil they tilled, and march in the streets they helped to pave. We are red-blooded Americans, we are patriots, and we have plenty to say about the direction this country is headed. We decry voter suppression. We demand equitable access to health care, housing, quality schools and employment. We welcome new Americans with dignity and open arms. And we will never stop fighting for the overhaul of a criminal-justice system with racist foundations.

We come from Minnesota and Michigan. The Bronx and Baton Rouge. Florida and Philadelphia. Cleveland and the Carolinas. Atlanta and Nevada. Oak-town and the Chi. We understand our role in this democracy, and respect the promise of a nation built by, for and of immigrants. We are part of that tradition, and have the strength to both respect our ancestors from faraway lands and the country we all call home.

Our love of country lives in these demands, and our commitment to use our voices and our energy to build a more perfect union. We refuse to sit idly by as racism, sexism, homophobia and xenophobia are wielded by the president and any elected official complicit in the poisoning of our democracy. We call on local, state and congressional officials, as well as presidential candidates to articulate their policies and strategies for moving us forward as a strong democracy, through a racial-equity lens that prioritizes people over profit. We will continue to support candidates for local, state and federal office who add more diverse representation to the dialogue and those who understand the importance of such diversity when policymaking here in our country and around the world. We ask all Americans to be a good neighbor by demonstrating anti-racist, environmentally friendly, and inclusive behavior toward everyone in your everyday interactions.

The statesman Frederick Douglass warned, “The life of a nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful and virtuous.” This nation has neither grappled with nor healed from the horrors of its origins. It is time to advance that healing process now through our justice, economic, health and political systems.

Expect to hear more from us. We plan to leave this country better than we found it. This is our home.

Intel Has Publicly Revealed Pay Data Showing Most Top Executives Are White Men

When Intel became the first major company to release its government data detailing employee pay information, the company's chief diversity and inclusion officer said in a statement that she hoped its move "will encourage others in the industry to do the same." The data revealed that 41 of 52 top executives making more than $208,000 (roughly Rs. 1.5 crores) a year were men and 37 were white. An analysis by Bloomberg, which first reported the data, showed that 1 in 4 white men at Intel are in the top salary band, while less than 10 percent of black employees are top earners.

But so far, none of the other big tech companies have committed to matching the chipmaker's transparency about employee pay data.

Microsoft said in an emailed statement that it "does not have anything more to share at this time" while noting that its median employee makes about $172,000 (roughly Rs. 1.2 crores) and that it is committed to equal pay. Google said it "had nothing more to share specifically" on the government data "at the moment" but highlighted other diversity statistics. Facebook also said that while it will continue to publish government data about its workforce demographics, it did not plan to release the pay data.

Apple, Amazon, Adobe, Dell, HP, and IBM offered no immediate response on releasing their data.

Several experts said that the chipmaker's voluntary release of the confidential data is unlikely to produce a groundswell of followers.

"It's unlikely to be widespread unless there's some kind of external pressure for it," said Donald Tomaskovic-Devey, a professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst who studies employment data. Not only might employers be concerned that the data will be misunderstood or paint them in a poor light but the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said it plans to shelve the rule requiring the pay data collection.

Under an Obama-era rule, the EEOC asked all employers with 100 or more employees to supply data about the number of US workers by race and gender across 10 broad job categories - the EEO-1 form that has been required for decades - as well as provide additional data breaking down those categories by pay band.

Pay advocates said collecting the data was intended to help reveal potential pay disparities. But some business leaders said the data did not reflect actual employee positions and was burdensome and costly to collect. In September, the EEOC said it planned to shelve the program, citing costs to employers and its "unproven utility." (Facebook cited this decision in its statement, noting that it is "keeping abreast of the department's recommendations for further reporting should that materialise.")

James Paretti - an attorney with Littler Mendelson who was a former chief of staff for EEOC Commissioner Victoria Lipnic, who voted against the rule - said he has not been having conversations with clients about releasing the data. "I doubt this will be indicative of a strong trend," he said, noting that "the conversations I've had most with my clients are about what an incredible amount of time, money and energy is going into [this]."

Companies may also choose not to release the data knowing that the EEOC is planning to drop the rule. "I think when you tell employers you're not going to do it anymore, it discourages them not only from reporting it but doing so publicly," said Jocelyn Frye, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, who worked on former first lady Michelle Obama's staff.

Intel chief diversity officer Barbara Whye said in a statement that the company released the data because "transparency and open sharing of our data enable us to both celebrate our progress and confront our setbacks." She said the company wants to "lead the industry in this space by raising the transparency bar for ourselves and, as a result, raising it for others."

She also said the company knows it "needs better female and underrepresented male representation in leadership positions in the US and worldwide. There is a gap in progression for women and underrepresented populations from senior management into our director and executive level ranks. These drops are preventable, and we are doubling down on our inclusion efforts, including a re-evaluation of leadership progression to make sure women and underrepresented groups are advancing within the company."

Many employers are hesitant to release their traditional EEO-1 form, which only collects US demographic data, not pay. When The Washington Post asked the 15 largest US banks to share that form, only two produced the form in its entirety for all three years requested.

Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting asked 211 of the largest technology companies for the original forms; it said in 2018 that only 30 had made them public for any year.
