Reservation as an Injustice to Deserving Students

Reservation in competitive exams like JEE or MBBS can be likened to tampering with people's lives. Today, I want to share my thoughts on the reservation system, where the government has set a staggering 70% quota for reserved categories and only 30% for open merit. As a result, countless talented, intelligent, and hardworking students see their dreams shattered when they are not selected. They are left in despair, grappling with various mental challenges, and some are even driven to take extreme steps. Yes, reservations are necessary, but they should be implemented within a reasonable limit. I believe that reservation should be capped at 40%, with 60% reserved for open merit, ensuring fairness for all students, including those eligible for reservations.

Students who work tirelessly and dedicate themselves to their studies often do not get selected in these exams. Instead, reserved category students, who may not have the same level of capability or intelligence, are given priority. Isn't this unfair to non-reserved students? Some students, feeling the injustice of the current system, have even taken the drastic step of committing suicide. Even with scores of 80 or higher, they are not selected, while reserved category students with lower scores are chosen. This situation mentally paralyzes capable and intelligent students, driving them to desperate actions. In my view, the government is responsible for this.

Many students fall into depression or turn to substance abuse due to this situation. In our state, reservation based on caste and community has become like an opium pill. Currently, there is a significant uproar across the country regarding reservations. While some form of reservation for the economically weaker sections is necessary, a 70% quota is unjustifiable. The reservation granted based on caste and community no longer holds as much relevance, as no caste or community remains backward. Yes, reservations should be provided to those who are economically disadvantaged. Students may not be paying much attention to this issue now, but they will realize its significance when they start experiencing the reality during counseling, selection in NEET exams despite good scores, or not getting a job despite excellent performance. In contrast, reserved category students will continue to benefit effortlessly.

Previously, 42% was reserved for open merit, but now it's only 30%, which is utterly wrong. Since there are more students from the open merit category, the government should have considered this when setting the quota. Therefore, I appeal to the government to ensure justice for open merit students by setting the reservation limit at 60% for open merit and 40% for reserved categories.

Under the old reservation policy, 8% was allocated to Scheduled Castes (SC), 10% to Scheduled Tribes (ST), 4% to Other Backward Classes (OBC), 10% to residents of backward areas, 4% to those living near the Line of Actual Control (LOC) and International Border (IB), 10% to economically weaker sections (EWS), 6% for former servicemen, and 4% for persons with disabilities. Under the new reservation policy, 8% is for SCs, 20% for STs, 8% for OBCs, 10% for residents of backward areas, 4% for those living near LOC and IB, 10% for EWS, 6% for former servicemen, and 4% for persons with disabilities. This change has significantly impacted open merit students. Therefore, I appeal to the government to develop a new policy considering the open merit category to avoid injustice, as the majority of people here belong to this category.

The government has made several scholarships and financial aid available for the economically weaker sections, benefiting them greatly. My intention is not to suggest that the poor should not be helped. My point is that while the government has made many schemes available for the poor, including the reservation system, the 70% quota is excessive. It is unjust to students who work day and night but still do not get selected in exams. What crime have these non-reserved students committed that their hard work, intelligence, and capabilities are not recognized?

We must consider whether this system is unfair to them. It has been observed that many non-reserved students work harder than those from reserved categories, yet they are not selected. Isn't this injustice? If someone faces problems due to reservations, falls into depression, gets addicted to drugs, or takes an extreme step leading to loss of life, who is responsible? Therefore, I humbly appeal to the government to seriously reconsider this matter and set a fair limit for reservations that ensures justice for both open merit and reserved category students. Those who truly deserve it should get their due.

A long time ago, the Supreme Court ruled in the Indra Sawhney case that general reservations should be limited to 50%. However, this guideline has been ignored. It is crucial to consider open merit while determining reservation limits. Discussing reservations does not mean criticizing the system but ensuring that no hardworking, intelligent, and capable student is treated unfairly. Therefore, the government should reevaluate the reservation policy and introduce a new decision, considering the ratio of open merit students. The standard of competence could weaken as long as opportunities are granted based on caste or community. It is essential to set a limit that allows every capable and intelligent student to benefit from their hard work, enabling them to progress and bring pride to their country, parents, and society.

Somewhere, reservations might be devaluing hard work and competence. Moreover, reservations could lead to social tensions, increasing class or caste-based conflicts.
