I didn’t know her. I had never seen her at Mass before. But that was the first thing she said to me after Mass.

My insightful response – “What?”

“Why don’t you say ‘Lord have mercy’ in English?”

She was annoyed at having to repeat herself to a rather slow deacon.

“Actually, sometimes I do say in in English. But mostly, I say it in Greek. Because that’s the original language for the Mass.

Kyrie eleison, in Greek, is part of the earliest known Masses. When the Mass went to Latin, the Kyrie stayed Greek.

St. Joan of Arc said it, at the last Mass she heard before the English burned her at the stake.

St. Maximillian Kolbe said it, at the last Mass he celebrated before the Nazi’s starved him to death.

For me, it’s a call-back. To the beginning. And to every generation between then and now. The saints we know, and the saints only God knows.

It’s a way of claiming our part in that big picture.”

She left without saying much. Apparently, that was not the desired answer.

Looking back, I think I left out the best part.

The Kyrie isn’t just a few words in Greek that we keep around for old times’ sake.

And it doesn’t just represent something much greater – it is something much greater.

Something worth holding on to. The thread that runs through it all. And the heart of our Faith.

Because the heart of our Faith is the mercy of God.

"It doesn't matter!" The Lady exclaimed, taking Joan by surprise. After her sheepish confession the night before she'd never expected to see the young Tetzlaff ever again, let alone seeing the light of love in her eyes. And yet, she was here, breathlessly staring at her and holding her hand.

"I've reflected upon your words from yesterday's evening, and on the nature of my feelings. And I decided that it doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman, Lord Deacon, my heart still beats for you."

See, Deacon is grateful about being Blue Harbor’s resident celebrity for as early as he can remember. He wouldn’t have gotten this kind of fame had he stayed in, say, New York City, where celebrity sightings are fairly commonplace, or even a little ways down Chicago, home to George Lucas, who’s got a place in Mag Mile (which, as far as McMansions go, eh, could be better) or Joan Cusack, who owns a bookstore (which, as far as bookstores go—well, he doesn’t know, he’s never been much of a reader) in Old Town. In many respects Blue Harbor has been kind to him and has largely left him alone, save for the occasional English teacher like, say, Miss Beryl, who once called him “militantly unteachable” and gave him a C-minus, only for her to backtrack and start sending him apology notes over Christmas when their mother got sick. 

Still, there are the usual sort of people—paparazzo from the press, or overenthusiastic fans from the golfer subreddit, or some other niche online forum—who have successfully managed to track him down. Like, people he’s never met before, who’s far too eager to catch him off-guard despite being four years into retirement even when confronted with irrefutable evidence. He’d given an interview, once, to The Chicago Tribune where he’d incidentally spoken about his hometown—right down to his current neighborhood—but it had been retracted by an editorial note! The man in front of him must’ve used some advanced form of Wayback Machine or a press clipping from some Illinois library that holds said Tribune because now, in the middle of an exercise routine, this redhead is coming up to him, and grabbing something from his pocket, and—

“No, no autographs! Sorry!” Deacon exclaims, taking a step backward, one feet already stepping onto the cement of the road. “No pictures either! Come on, I’m sweating like a madman out here.” As far as groupies go, though, the curly-haired man isn’t too bad-looking, but he’s been burned by hot people before. “But, er, fine—my next stop if Caffelicious if you don’t mind running with me.”
