On the issue with James, I do think this is one area where the books aren’t ageless and have to be read in the context of an English school in the 70s written by an author in the 90s. Because by today’s standards, James is less of your garden variety ‘boys will be boys’ type bully and more of an actual sociopath well past the age of criminal responsibility who by 16 had committed one public sexual assault and was an accessory to attempted murder who backed out last second. But I don’t think that’s at all what Jo meant to convey.

Let me guess. Snape fan? :P

Look, my issue with this discourse has always been that only James seems to get so much flack for his most morally ambiguous actions. I mean, Hermione disfigured a girl her age with zits spelling "sneak" because she'd given the DA members out to Umbridge. Harry nearly gored Malfoy to death by using an unknown spell he knew was meant "for enemies". Yet, i've never seen anyone hating on James that would go as hard against these other characters.

On your first point: James wasn't an accessory to attempted murder who backed out last second. Sirius was the one who tricked Snape and nearly got him killed (which would have made Lupin an accessory to murder). James acted to stop it as soon as he realised what Sirius had done. His reasons for doing so remain obscure - Snape thinks he wanted to save his own skin because he would have been blamed alongside Sirius, but that's Snape's interpretation, not exactly the most unbiased source.

Next: i ressent people misusing the term "sexual assault" to describe what James does in Snape's worst memory (a take that, btw, i've only seen upheld as if it were common knowledge by Americans, or very "Americanised" fans). The definition of sexual assault is "unwanted sexual contact", and in the UK especially it pretty much means "rape without penetration". I do think Jo meant for it to be taken seriously (its parallel with the Muggles's treatment by Death Eaters in GoF is clear), only people didn't really at the time. Still. James humiliated Snape, i'd say what he did qualifies as sexual harrassment, and he's rightfully painted as the bad guy in that episode, but he didn't sexually assault Snape.

Also, because we only have that one scene to work with, everyone seems to forget the larger context, namely: Snape created that spell. Judging by the way Death Eaters were still using it 15+ years later, i imagine James wasn't the first nor the last in his generation to use it against another student. I always saw it as a bit analogous to those dangerous/humiliating games that suddenly become trendy with high schoolers until someone gets hurt enough for adults to intervene. I'm comforted in that interpretation by the fact that Snape implies James didn't even know HE was the one to invent the spell, suggesting it started as a thing Snape showed to other Slytherins to gain some social cred, which then spread to the whole school.

Anyways, if that makes James a sociopath, then Hogwarts must have been chock-full of them in the 70s, starting with Snape himself. Maybe the point isn't that Snape or James (or Sirius) are sociopaths, but that imminent war tends to turn people more prone to violence and less likely to abide by moral principles, or consider their designated enemies's humanity. I have no doubt that James morally justified himself and his actions by the fact that Snape belonged to the "bad crowd" of Voldemort's future recruits. Even though we readers know enough about Snape to be able to tell that he was never seriously convinced by Pure Blood superiority.

@tellthemeerkatsitsfine, while I read your wonderful essay, I just wanted to jot down some of the timestamps of Jon and Russell talking about John during their show, where they refer to him by his proper name. I haven't done so in past episodes, but from where I am, I'm adding bits that I notice and will publish them from drafts soon/edit the post and add more as they come.

18 March 2007: ~57:20 "Our old flatmate John is really scared of the dark. I used to jump out at him and he'd get really scared".

8 April 2007: ~57:40 Mark Olver is accused by Jon of being a bad driver, but a better driver than Russell Howard, which Jon says is no big achievement, insinuating that Russell is a really distracted/bad driver. Mark says here, I'm a better driver than John Robins, to which Jon doesn't seem to agree (or disagree), saying, "we'll give him the right to reply next week." (This was during Russell's Australia trip, the second week that Mark co-hosted and before Robins sat in.)

Interesting to me because throughout the XFM years and even to the present day, John prides himself on being a good driver. Elis has literally said "you parallel park beautifully" to cheer John up on a bad day. Was John a worse driver in 2007? Did the improvement happen sometime during the intervening 7 years? IIRC (why the fuck do I know this) these were the Lanos years. I have heard John talk fondly of those, so I don't know.

8 April 2007: 01:17:20, Jon mentions he'll be at a Champions League game with John Robins later that week. John is still regularly in touch with his old flatmates, and also is still well into football.

29 July 2007: 01:02:30, Jon mentions on air that Russell had to accompany John into a chocolate shop because he fancied the girl behind the counter. Robins bought Jon Richardson chocolates and then got angry when Jon (who had recently vowed to only eat fair-trade chocolate recently) didn't eat them.

11 November 2007: 00:46:00, Jon has invited his former housemates Russell, John and Mark to a Christmas dinner, but none of them replied to his text invite for three days. Jon catches up with Robins a few days later, and at the end of their meeting John says, ‘oh yeah I’m free on 18th’, making Jon even more mad about how Jo one is replying to his text.

2 December 2007: 00:13:00, Jon has bought everyone in the studio an advent calendar, he gives Russell a Spider-Man or Island Princess one, I can’t tell which is going to whom, but Jon chastises Russell for eating all his calendar sweets in one day. Russell corrects him, revealing that the compulsive sweet eater was actually John Robins, not him (Russell revealed he didn’t end up eating any chocolates, which probably had to do with him being in a diet).

Did you see the new clip from the upcoming episode when they are all sitting on the dining table (both Jos and Sophie btw) and he's just super hungry but can't eat it all. That's the second time eating comes up in this documentary and I just want to hug him and cook him whatever he wants. I'm not a steak eater myself but I'd learn how to make it to perfection.

I wonder if this was at Spa because he's already wearing the 3rd bracelet and Kelly was in Croatia that weekend. She isn't in that clip. Spa was the first race after the break and towards the end of the break he went on training again. Probably starved just like in January after the paparazzi pictures. Honestly just for the fact he put on a tshirt when he saw the paps Kelly should get dumped.

Long lashes fan over deep-set hazel eyes, a green that fades into a warm brown. A long scar runs from mid-forehead to high cheekbone vertically over his left eye, and just under the right lies a freckle. He seldom appears clean-shaven, and if he does it doesn't last for long, typically suffering from 12 o'clock shadow fairly regularly. His smile is broad and inviting, teeth pearl white and straight, though his front teeth have just a bit of crookedness. It's not uncommon for his lips to be swollen or split, nor for his body to have bruises and scrapes. His hands are rough from hard work, and littered with variously sized scars; his left arm to the chest has a Kraken and nautical-themed sleeve to cover up the scar tissue of a nasty burn scar. There are matching scars on either side of his body, sternum, and mid-back.

Body type: João stands at a respectable height, not overtly tall nor short. He's strong, ripe with muscles with an upper body and thighs that could crush a man. One could almost describe his form as catlike if a lion were the cat in question. Dark hair covers this man from head to toe, though he takes care to make it look nice. During depressive episodes, he is known to gain weight easily, and let his appearance go.

Though he complains, he is quite hospitable. Many who don't know of his violent bouts of jealousy, wild temper, and past think of him as a kind man. "She intervenes in the 3 main domains of our world, making her some kind of trifunctional deity: The celestial, due to her seemingly supreme functions and inscriptions found on mountains. She is possibly the consort of Reo in the ancient Western Iberian mythology, the God of thunder, mountains and the sky. She may also be related with the moon. The Earth, presiding over water, valleys, forests, protection of communities (by extent, also war) and oaths. This was the aspect of Nabia that was invoked the most. The underworld. She probably transported the souls of the dead to the afterlife through a river. This would make her a psychopomp. In Indo-European myths, the souls would often go through rivers to reach the afterlife, with the help of a deity or spirit."

Mythical affiliations: Moura Encantada, fountain of youth, soul eater

Background: it's the dawning of his fifth birthday when the Romans arrived, breaking the Lusitanian defenses until they fall upon their small tribe. The women are warriors, never to turn a cheek from a battle, never to back down, nor utter a cry even in the face of death. The Barcari were known for their ferocity.

Defenses had been lowered, June 9th the day of the lady of the valley, their lovely goddess Nabia's, a festivity in the process of being set up as the warriors arrived. They storm the small tribe, and he runs as people are slaughtered, he's covered in the blood of his people, vare feet hitting the dirt of the forest. He's spotted, a shout in a language he doesn't understand before the sounds of pursuit, stomping of adult men, and twigs snapping.

Small feet full of terror splash within a fountain, and a silent prayer is sent to his goddess; a plea for help, an oath sworn by a boy born on her most sacred day. It is not enough to save him as a spear sails through his back, through his chest. The fountain fills with the blood of a youth, scared and begging for life.

Life is breathed back into the boy, though he is far from a human when he rises. The moon resides in his cold eyes, the souls of the enemy pulled from their breath and deposited into the holy fountain, endowing it with life itself, the souls trapped below the surface.

He becomes the first of the Moura Encantada. Androgenous in his youth, with long hair and a pretty face, he spends his days in a sleep-like spell, a protector of the new enchanted waters. A mortal could sip from it, taking the life of the souls trapped below the waters to extend their lives; but one would have to get past him first. He offers a deal; release him from his slumbering spell, and he shall allow you to drink. Any who dares to partake without upholding their end of the deal shall be deposited into the lake, just as his killers had been— just as he had been.

On a rare occasion he simply fully devours the soul, water be damned.

He stays young and youthful and while he ages it takes its time, especially with how he sips from the water, how he devours the souls. Each soul rejuvenates him, and while at the lake he never passes the age of 20, his youthful, androgynous appearance causing rumor to spread of a lovely woman in the area. Many attempt to wake him, many fail.

Rome rises, and it falls hard, crashing more harshly than the waves upon the banks, new countries arise, calling themselves Portuguese, and Spaniards. They too try to wake him, some try to fight him, all of it in vain. He continues in his life, sleepwalking through the ages. He's collected animals; some hens, some lambs, his favorite is a rooster that seems to think he is its mother, following him everywhere. It partakes in the fountain and is immortalized just as he himself is. He builds stone circles, compelled by his spell to do so, with unending servitude to continue his tasks to a goddess that has faded with time from human memory.

All fail but one, a man named Cassiel, a Spaniard. He breaks the spell after ages of attempts. Not all that attempt to save him are killed, only those that resort to violence, or thievery. Cassiel comes back day after day, brings gifts, and food, and even gives him a proper name.

João.

He allows Cassiel his sip of the fountain, and it proves to be his greatest mistake. He becomes corrupted, by both time and the souls trapped within the water. A once-kind man becomes twisted with the rage of the souls trapped, and becomes a different person as the souls attempt to claw their way into his chest cavity.

João can no longer recognize him. He kills him, and he weeps, his only connection lost to the fountain. Jo releases the soul, unable to bear the thought of trapping him under the crystalline waters for eternity. Surely being released offers a chance they shall meet again, in Cassiel's other life.

Finally free, he lingers about the area, unsure of where to go, unable to recognize civilization for what it was all these centuries later. A little ways from the fountain he builds his home, unable, or perhaps unwilling to go far from his spot. People feared the disappearances in his area, many would not dare to enter and Jo finds that he likes that, even if loneliness had hit him like a punch in the chest. Funny how you don't feel lonely when you don't know companionship.

A barn is built, and he ends up with a dog, old and abandoned by cruel humans. Its legs are broken, and he'd dragged himself not far from his home, awaiting death. João will not allow it, and carries the poor soul to the fountain. With a couple of gulps, the grayed hairs return flush with amber, legs mending themselves. He is loyal, kinder than any human, and protects his animals when the time comes. The lazy thing moves very little otherwise, other than its keen eyes that follow his every movement, ears swiveling to hear for approaching footsteps.

Ever drawn to water, Jo can't help but to make his way to the ocean, joins up with a crew with his dog and rooster in tow. It's not long before he has his own crew, having devoured the captain and crew before acquiring his workers. He becomes highly feared and ruthless, and rumors swirl about his origins. Away from the fountain he ages, but the aging is slow, within 300 years he only seems to have aged roughly 10 years. Humans believe he is immortal, and perhaps they were right.

Upon being killed, João has risen time and time again, with moons in his eyes. His soul rejuvenated as he'd eaten theirs, their body crumbling to sand within his clutches. Each treasure is added to the fountain, hidden away, and by the time piracy ends João is sitting upon a hoard of treasure, enough to make even a king envious.

It's as though he cannot escape his past, and he takes once more to guarding the area, the treasures he's hoarded. With some he exchanges work, humans constructing him a home that he resides in for, what he hopes is eternity.

No longer looking for help, he resides with his old dog and rooster in his home to this day. He has friends, attends church, and appears as no more than a lovely man in his mid-thirties.

Pinopost ko lang dito para mabawasana ng guilt that I decided to skip my work-out for today because:

Umuulan kanina so hindi ako nakapag-morning walk. Whenever I am not able to do my morning walk, parang wala ako sa mental space and focus to work-out.

Napakain na ako ng lunch at napa-relax. Nanoon kami nun new episode ng Extraordinary Attorney. Reward ko yun food or relaxation time after work-out, pero gusto ko naman masabayan yun asawa kong kumain.

I just felt like I wanted to rest. Even my manager is asking me to file a leave kasi nga, tuwing magpaplano ako mauudlot. I end up doing half day leaves lang kasi laging may meeting, may kelangan sagutin an email, etc.

I DESERVE TO REST. I can skip and that is okay. What matters is I know what I need to do to get back on track. Missing one day does not mean I am losing progress or I am slacking off.

Wala lang. Kailangan ko syang isulat para din ma-absorb ng utak ko. Lately kasi, since Coach Pain @ironcladfaerie is helping me with this journey to better relationship with food, naka- reverse dieting kami. I have been feeling fat and bloated. I have been feeling ugly. I feel like I am not doing enough workouts or not giving better attention to my nutrition. Pero, this is a reminder that it does not have to be perfect. You just need to commit to do better day by day. You just need to make sure that when you sum out the good fitness days, it outweighs the bad fitness days. Anything worth doing is worth doing badly.

Consistency is not 100% day in and day out. Consistency is keeping at it, getting back when you get lost and pushing on despite whatever setback.

Ayun lang. Good morning. Magbabasa akong libro kasi nagsagot na ako ng emails. Sana matapos ko na tong binabasa ko.

(P.S. It helps din pala na yun Coach mo is not obsessed with aesthetic na kahit magutom ka, o beyond your limit na eh okay lang. Sabi ko nga kay Faye, it's her gift that she understands her clients in a deeper way. Hindi lang physical, but also mental and social. Sabi nga niya, hindi naman work-out lang ang buhay natin. It also helps na may mga taong gaya ni @supschrodinger and other women who shows what real bodies look like, and who are not afraid to be confident in their own skin. Kaya din finofollow ko muna lahat ng mga nutritionist na intuitive eaters, si no food rules, so Jo Sebastian and the likes. Ayoko na ma-sway na naman ng social media sa kung ano ang "after" or "progress" pictures dapat.)

This is my body and this is where we are now on this journey. Being a work in progress is okay.

Re-watching Lizzie Mcguire: Episode 1.16 (Obsession)

- This episode starts off on a positive note; Lizzie and Miranda are congratulated by their teacher, Miss Moran for a job well done on the food drive they organised at school. 

- Lizzie’s parents and Matt are also there and we come to find out that Matt is the new hall monitor in his school. Lizzie makes fun of him because apparently being a hall monitor means being thrown in the trash can a lot. Even Sam can attest to this, based on his past memory:

The Science Olympics 

- Lizzie, Gordo and Miranda are talking to each other on the phone and Lizzie asks Gordo why he wasn’t at the food drive. He tells them he was busy preparing for the upcoming ‘Science Olympics’ that week, which includes:-

1. Long-distance paper airplane contest

2. The egg drop

3. Slow bicycle race

- Larry Tudgeman has always been the champion of the ‘Science Olympics’ but Gordo is determined to win this year. Lizzie is annoyed because Gordo won’t be able to help them with their next volunteering project. Gordo should be able to do whatever he wants Lizzie. She seems to be a little too headstrong and determined about doing these volunteering projects, which relays back to the title of this episode, ‘Obsession’. In contrast, Miranda isn’t too excited about helping out.

Lizzie’ Recycling Project

- At dinner in the Mcguire household, which they’re having fried chicken with salad served on the side (that looks yummy), Matt is describing to Jo and Sam his day as a school hall monitor and he seems pretty into it. Lizzie arrives a little late for dinner and Matt uses this opportunity to I guess ‘flex’ his hall monitor status and write her a ticket. 

I gotta say this again, their fried chicken looks good

- Lizzie has her own announcement to make; She and Miranda are going to start a recycling project at the Digital Bean. She plans to separate out the garbage into plastic, paper and glass. But where’s aluminium/metal? That’s pretty important to sort out too. She is also thinking of implementing this practice in their own home, which doesn’t seem to make her parents too thrilled about the idea. 

- We skip straight to the Digital Bean and we see Lizzie and Miranda busy sorting out garbage. Miranda isn’t fond of going through the garbage and I don’t blame her, especially when it’s not your own house garbage. Umm, and why are they not wearing any gloves? That’s just nasty because we don’t even know what’s inside the trash cans of the Digital Bean!

I recommend you two wear some gloves!

- Lizzie goes a little overboard when she’s explaining to Miranda the point of recycling the different items they’re sorting. But I actually like how passionate Lizzie is about saving the planet because this issue is still relevant, even more so today. Plus, seeing how clueless Miranda is about recycling and our Earth, Lizzie is kinda justified in how she’s acting. 

Long Time No See Parker!

- As both girls are about to have their lunch, Parker Mackenzie pops up and lets them know how impressed she is with their recycling project. 

I didn’t know Parker was a so-called ‘Green Warrior’

- Parker spots Lizzie’s beef burger on the table and starts questioning why she’s going to eat a “poor dead animal’. She then unexpectedly shouts at Lizzie and calls her a ‘meat eater’. This girl has no chill whatsoever. Lizzie now feels bad and thinks she should become a vegetarian from now on. 

- My opinion on all of this is simple. If a person wants to go vegan or become a vegetarian, go for it. But please don’t judge those who didn’t make the same decision due to factors like socioeconomic status or health conditions. We all are able to play a part in helping our environment, even meat-eaters like myself. I for one, support sustainable farming practices and will only buy products derived from them. So, just because I eat meat, it doesn’t mean I’m reckless about our planet’s dwindling resources. 

Gordo vs Larry

- We switch things over to Gordo’s ‘Science Olympics’ plot and we see Gordo and Larry studying for the upcoming competition in a classroom. They are sitting opposite to one another and are staring down at each other with extreme competitiveness. 

The tension between the two looks very deep lol

- Larry is trying to get under Gordo’s skin by reminding him of all the times he lost to him in previous competitions. But Gordo stands up for himself and also does his part to intimidate Larry by saying that he is in his head? Mmkay...

“I own you” The tension is real y’all!

Lizzie Gets Carried Away 

Lizzie is taking on another volunteer project and this time, it’s a clothing drive. She’s planning to give away a bunch of her own clothes to the homeless and she’s even gotten to the point where she wants to give away the food that Jo wants to cook. Now that’s pretty extreme...

- Lizzie even gets an attitude when Sam doesn’t sort out the garbage for recycling as she tasked him to do. I love how Sam actually called her out on her behaviour. 

- Miranda shows up at the house and she’s proudly modeling her new leather jacket to Lizzie. But Lizzie isn’t happy about this either because leather jackets are made from cows and since Lizzie’s now a vegetarian, she doesn’t support Miranda’s fashion choice. Miranda thinks that Lizzie is totally overreacting and they are at odds with each other once again....

“Fine, so don’t eat my jacket” OMG I’m hollering!

- Miranda finds Gordo in a classroom, who is exhausted from throwing paper airplanes all day and tries to vent to him about Lizzie but he is too focused on the paper airplane competition after school. Suddenly, Lizzie shows up and she’s horrified by all the paper Gordo had used/wasted to test out his airplane designs. 

Matt Gets Carried Away

- Well, it seems like being a hall monitor is getting to Matt’s head. He’s been giving people too many citations for no good reason. But judging from the montage I just watched of him giving these citations, they seem appropriate? I mean, the signs on the walls do say “Buckle Up” and “Walk Don’t Run”. So, isn’t Matt just following these rules? Unless, of course, he actually posted those rules himself.

I know that this is a Disney show but that’s a pretty physical thing for a teacher to do to a student.

Lizzie in Burlap 

- After a strange ‘cowboy’ style stare-down between Larry and Gordo, we find out that Larry had won the egg drop and Gordo won the long distance airplane contest. Therefore, the slow bicycle race will decide who the winner of the ‘Science Olympics’ is. However, things aren’t looking so good for Gordo because is so sleepy from all the prep he’s been doing. 

- Miranda is trying her hardest to get Lizzie to snap out of her over-the-top ‘Let’s Save The Planet’ mindset but she just won’t listen to her. She’s even wearing clothes made out of burlap because it’s eco-friendly. But I think she still looks cute in that outfit. 

- They’re about to sit for a pop quiz but Lizzie has something to say to Miss Moran about the way she has printed out their quiz on only one side of the paper. Woah, she’s so brave to talk to her teacher like that. Anyways, she isn’t having any of her attitude and sends Lizzie to pack up her things and go home.

The Mcguire Kids Get Sent Home Early

- As you can see from the title, both Lizzie and Matt are sent home from school earlier than usual because of their respective ‘commitments’. Matt seems to be very power-hungry and he just can’t stand the fact that he isn’t able to issue more citations in school. 

- Sam and Jo advise Lizzie to not be so concerned about saving the environment because it’s gotten to the point where she’s alienating everyone around her and not taking care of herself. They want her to pick just one thing to take on and focus on that. Lizzie also admits she’s been a terrible friend to both Miranda and Gordo and she wants to go back to school to support Gordo in the slow bicycle race. 

The Slow Bicycle Race

Gordo as an Aerodynamic Elvis Presley

- Next, we are taken to the Slow-Speed Bicycle Race between Gordo and Larry. Both Lizzie and Miranda are there to support Gordo, who is dressed up as Elvis Presley in an aerodynamically designed costume to increase his wind resistance. 

- The race begins and Gordo is winning because he’s behind Larry. But, Gordo is starting to become sleepy again and actually falls off his bike just before Larry is about to cross the finish line and lose. This means that Gordo is disqualified from the race, unfortunately.

- The last scene is Lizzie apologising to Gordo and Miranda for the way she’s been acting. But Lizzie did leave an impact on Miranda and her family because they’re now cutting up their 6 packs. Larry swoops past them on his bike and makes fun of Gordo’s height but luck did not stay by his side this time because he crashed into something lol.

Overall Thoughts

- The messaging in this episode definitely sticks out to me, which of course is about doing what we can to protect our planet and its resources. Young kids can definitely watch this episode and learn the basics of recycling and sustainability. I respect Lizzie’s commitment to the environment; It’s believable and I like how well-informed she is at that age. 

- Obviously, she’s gotten carried away with her efforts but her heart is in the right place. Her parents also taught her a very good lesson of narrowing down her scope and focusing on 1 or 2 projects. Balance of responsibilities is definitely important and so is taking care of yourself.

- Matt’s storyline isn’t so bad because it relates a lot to Lizzie’s. Their story-lines definitely ran in parallel to one another and I like how Sam pointed out to Lizzie that she and Matt have more in common than she thinks. But I don’t think Matt is shown to have learned his lesson unlike Lizzie. Overall, it’s a very good episode.
