Here are the results from the bouldering round!
Quick explanation: They climb 4 boulders, with the possibility of earning up to 25 points per boulder (depending on how much of it they complete, and in how many attempts). The highest possible total score from the bouldering round is 100, and in a few days they’ll have a chance to earn 100 more points on the lead wall.
Tumblr media
Thoughts, predictions, etc behind the cut.
My top 8 prediction was right about Garnbret, Bertone, Rabatou, Grossman, and Nonaka, but underestimated Mackenzie, Pilz, and Moroni! Luo is just outside of the top 8 with a very close score to Moroni. McNiece and Kazbekova scored lower but are still had decent rounds.
But they still have the lead round to come! I have faith that Ai Mori will do amazing and 54 is a decent middle-of-the-pack score that she could recover from if she tops or close to in lead. So there’s still a chance she’ll be in the Finals. Same for Chaehun Seo.
The other lead specialists, like Laura Rogora and Mia Krampl, I don’t think will be able to make a big enough dent to move forward sadly. And some of the boulder specialists (specifically Oceana Mackenzie) did so well in bouldering that I think they’ll probably make it into finals even if they don’t have a great lead round.
So basically the 8 finalists might be the current top 8 except that one or both of the bottom two (Miho Nonaka and Camilla Moroni) might get bumped out by some of the higher scoring lead specialists (Ai Mori and Chaehun Seo) or one of the competitors currently close behind them (Luo Zhilu and Erin McNiece). I’d include Jessica Pilz and Natalia Grossman as being in the danger spots since their scores aren’t that much higher than Miho’s and Camilla’s, but Natalia and Jessica are both extremely good at lead too, so their odds of staying at the front of the pack are good.
It was a fun boulder round! Great separation, lots of drama, and impressive performances. Janja was a legend, as always—such a joy to watch!! And I was really happy to see Brook and Oriane do so well, both with 3 tops!! Also great to see Ai Mori come through on boulders 2 and 4 after getting completely shut down by boulder 1. Can’t wait to watch the lead and the finals later this week!
… I’m gonna make a new Finals prediction.
Garnbret
Rabatou
Bertone
Pilz
Grossman
Mackenzie
Mori
Nonaka
Gonna make my predictions for women’s boulder & lead combined before I watch the boulder semifinals round.
Top 8 from bouldering will be: Janja Garnbret, Brooke Rabatou, Natalia Grosssman, Miho Nonaka, Erin McNiece, Oriane Bertone, Zhilu Luo, and Jenya Kazbekova.
Then we’ll have to wait a couple days for the lead round of semis, and the people likely to get the highest scores there are: Janja Garnbret, Ai Mori, Chaehyun Seo, Jessi Pilz, Laura Rogora, Mia Krampl, Brooke Rabatou, and Natalia Grossman.
So I think the 8 moving on to the finals will be:
Janja Garnbret, Brooke Rabatou, Natalia Grossman, Ai Mori, Miho Nonaka… Those are the 5 I’m pretty sure about, and the remaining 3 slots are a tossup between: Zhilu Luo, Erin McNiece, Jessi Pilz, Jenya Kazbekova, and Chaehyun Seo. Oh, and Oriane Bertone!!
My podium prediction…. Obviously Janja Garnbret for gold! And then?? Man, I don’t know—totally depends if Ai Mori has a good boulder round or not and if Brooke and/or Natalia have a good lead round. And I could see any of these women making the podium tbh, but I’ll go with Brooke for silver and Ai Mori for bronze. ??
