Finally finished my refs for my two active Fallen London characters! Jessamine I've been playing on and off since forever and Phi is my new character this wave of being obsessed with the game.
Currently, Phi is making their way through various Making Their Name quests and Jessamine is THIS close to finally making progress on the railroad and finishing Heart's Desire...
Thomas Duraine come back and play again your wife misses you

WWW Wednesday, er Thursday
What are you currently reading?
A Restless Truth by Freya Marske - I got the last book of the trilogy from the library (A Power Unbound), started reading it, and realized my memories about what had happened in the last book were fuzzy, so I'm rereading.
Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher. Again, the latest book in the series was just released (Paladin's Faith), and I needed a refresher. Such a hardship!
Know My Name by Chanel Miller (audiobook). I think I'll have to switch to another format to finish by book club on the 16th.
Upstream by Mary Oliver. I've been reading a chapter every night before bed as a relaxation tool. Her prose is as lovely as her poetry.
What have you recently finished?
Since I didn't do this last week, here's the books I've finished in the last two weeks:
Sweet Like Jasmine by Bonnie Grey. I tried to keep an open mind, I really did, but it was light on details and emotions and heavy on "Jesus saved me from my horrible life and everything is perfect now." Even the tidbits at the end of each chapter on Chinese culture were spun through a Jesus lens. Thankfully, it was short. Not for me.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. There was a lot that I loved about this book (Rocky was the best, the enthusiasm over the science was awesome, the ending was just right), pacing was a little odd, and at times the writing felt like it was for early readers, which isn't something that I expected with a book as heavy on math and physics as this one.
The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories by Susanna Clark (audiobook). I loved getting back into this universe and the stories were fun.
Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez. My friend recommended this book as I am always on the look out for the perfect "protagonist is a doctor" romcom. Overall really enjoyed it and the medicine was mostly accurate. Looking forward to the sequel.
Mister Magic by Kiersten White. I read this one because I heard she wrote it as a way to process leaving the LDS church and her dedication and author's note really resonated with me. The book itself fell flat for me about 2/3rd into it and I hated the ending.
Payback's a Witch by Lana Harper. Started this one around Halloween and it took me a long time to get into it. It was fine as a sapphic Halloween Hallmark special.
Gwen and Art Are Not in Love by Lex Croucher. I wanted to read a light-hearted, causal, fun romp which this was until it wasn't. The last 1/4 of a book was entirely different than the rest.
Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher. This is one of the books that got me into reading again and it's every bit as good as it was when I first read it two years ago.
What will you be reading next?
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske, Paladin's Hope and then Paladin's Faith by T Kingfisher, The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan (the last of my "friend recommendations for 2023 project"), A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (still on the list), Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Trigger Warning: Violence
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Always and forever had been a con. One told by Caleb to keep his siblings close. Persephone thought she was now included in that. And that was her downfall. Her love for her siblings was unconditional, even if not showed. When Caleb called to tell her, his idiotic self pissed off a warlock, she dropped what she was doing and went to go help her siblings. Luckily, the kids were in the Underworld with Jessamine and her family. Not wanting her to go alone, Harper went with her.
The girls got to Caleb’s location pretty quickly. Out front, Mark was waiting for them. Seph climbed out of the car with a heavy sigh. “Hello, little brother. What has Caleb gotten himself into now?”
Mark went over to his sister and kissed her cheek and nodded towards Harper then lead them inside. “How about I let our little brother explain it to you? Caleb!”
The sandy blonde hybrid came into view. “Persephone! My favorite sister! Come to save us all!”
She gave him an unamused look. “What did you do, Caleb?”
He put his hands behind his back and a smirk tugged at his lips. “In the late 1800’s, I seduced a young girl named Wendy, trying to get information on a vampire that was chasing her brothers. She was just collateral damage. Imagine my surprise when her oldest brother Dylan popped up. Apparently, he’s courting our darling Isobel’s sister.”
Persephone shook her head. “Let me guess, he set warlock friend of his on you.”
Caleb’s face fell. “I was not expecting him to be so powerful. He’s just about as powerful as you, dear sister.”
She glowered at her brother. “Knock it off with the flattery, Caleb.” A groan left her mouth. “Who else did you call?”
“Me. He thought I’d have fun causing some chaos and bloodshed. Though if you three have it handled, I brought a bag of popcorn and chair. I’ll just sit back and watch.”
Mark sighed. “Hello, Jeremy.” The younger Strickland gave his siblings a wicked grin.
The female Strickland felt a pull on her shirt sleeve. She glanced over to Harper. “Seph, I don’t have a good feeling about this. Let’s just leave this mess to them and go home. Please.”
The blonde gave her person a small smile and patted her hand. “This will be easy, Harper. I’ll just simply spell him then we can go home.” The brunette sighed and just shook her head.
A female voice came out of nowhere. “Having a family reunion without me? How rude.”
Mark’s face lit up with a small smile. “Annabelle. It’s been awhile.”
“Indeed, it has, big brother. I see Caleb is up to his old tricks,” Annabelle replied.
As her siblings talked, Persephone went around the room putting up crystals to help their situation. The warlock would come in and be trapped as soon as he stepped into the crystal circle. Then all she would have to do is poof him into the ocean.
“Waiting for me?”
Persephone turned around hearing the gruff voice of a male only to be sent flying back a few feet. The blonde landed hard on her back, the wind knocked out of her.
“SEPH!” Harper screamed and sped over to her friend.
The warlock smirked seeing the blonde hybrid down. “Really? She was the best you could do?” He stopped and let out a snort. “Cute, Strickland.”
Caleb gave him a steely look. “You will pay for that.” He looked back at Jeremy. “Wanna have some fun, brother? Have at it.”
The younger Strickland stood back eating popcorn. “No, I’m good.” Annabelle slapped him upside the head before stepping up to where Mark was.
Mark finally spoke. “If you leave now, you’ll leave with your life. You’re caught in a pissing contest between my brother and your boss. It’s pathetic to be honest.”
“Hey!” Caleb exclaimed, a small pout settling on his face.
The warlock rolled his eyes before settling on the blonde female getting up from the floor. “I was going to kill you all fast, make it hurt less, but now I’m thinking a more slow and painful death. Especially for you, hybrid.” He remarked, a smirk thrown Caleb’s way.
Persephone watched as the two started to battle. Caleb used his supernatural speed to rush at the warlock and pushed him away. He smirked as the groan the warlock let out before flying off into the wall himself. The warlock stood up and rolled his shoulders. He started to move back towards Caleb until Mark plowed into him grabbing him by the throat and raising him up to throw him. The warlock struggled at first then used an incantation to throw snap Mark’s neck letting him down. Seeing his brother down, Caleb tackled the warlock. They rolled a few feet before the warlock settled on top of Caleb. He threw one punch before Caleb flipped them and pinned him by the throat.
“I could do this all day,” Caleb said with a smirk. The hybrid shoved his hand through the warlock’s chest. “Maybe you could send a message to Mr. Everly for me?” The warlock felt blood pooling in his throat, yet he still struggled under the hybrid to get away. “No, I’m not going to kill you just yet. But go back to Mr. Everly and tell him that if he ever comes near me and my family or Isobel again, he won’t live to regret it.” He pulled his hand out of the man’s chest then stood up. He walked back over to where Annabelle was kneeling with Mark as he woke up. “Brother, are you alright?”
The elder Strickland nodded. “I’m fine.”
Jeremy booed. “That was anti-climactic. Our grandmother would have fought better than that!”
Persephone shook her head with a chuckle then took Harper’s hand and walked over to her siblings to join them. She was so focused on her siblings that she didn’t see the warlock get up and heal his wound. She didn’t see him pull out a dagger, one that she would have recognized as cursed by the glint of a symbol meaning death. When he started running towards Caleb, Persephone didn’t think. She just acted. The blonde sped towards the warlock and tackled him to the ground.
A blinding white hot pain.
The warlock looked up at the blonde, a hateful smile lighting up his face. “Well, you’re not who that was intended for, but I’m not displeased.”
Seph’s face drained of color as she looked down, the dagger sticking out of her chest. Her gaze went to the warlock in question before she fell to the side.
Harper’s eyes widened. “Seph…” She ran over to the blonde. “No, no, no, no.” She took a hold of the dagger and pulled it out. The brunette looked over at the warlock, her face becoming dark. She lifted her hand and used magic to make the warlock choke.
Mark and Caleb ran over to the girls. “Persephone? She’ll be okay, right?” Mark asked.
Harper turned her dark look to them. “No. No, she won’t. That dagger? It was cursed. Like a bad curse for vampires. It sends a curse through the blood, makes them unable to heal.”
Caleb looked down at his sister. “She took that dagger for me…” He sighed, something changing inside him. “Well, how do we fix this?”
Harper stared down at the unconscious blonde. “We can’t.”

Friday Reads: Peaches!
“The peach lay there still, blushing deeper in the window light. She bent to smell, and the perfume was headier than before, a scent of meadows and summers home from school.”
– Allegra Goodman, The Cookbook Collector
Did you know that August is National Peach Month? Arguably the most popular fruit of summer, it’s no surprise the peach is regaled this way. A mealy, flavorless peach is a letdown to be sure… but also makes the pleasure of a perfect peach a palate’s treasure! There’s no bad taste in the following bushel of books, picked just ripe and ready for your weekend reading:
THE COOKBOOK COLLECTOR by Allegra Goodman
Two sisters, opposites in every way. Twenty-eight-year-old Emily is the pragmatic CEO of a Silicon Valley startup, and twenty-three-year-old Jessamine is a grad student in philosophy and a part-timer at Yorick’s Used and Rare Books in Berkeley. But life tests the sisters and their theories. Emily’s success in the dot-com bubble has its costs, while Jess’s work on a cache of rare cookbooks pulls her closer to her charming, arrogant employer.
THE PERFECT PEACH: RECIPES AND STORIES FROM THE MASUMOTO FAMILY FARM by David Mas Masumoto, Marcy Masumoto, Nikiko Masumoto; Foreword by Rick Bayless
A cookbook showcasing the luscious flavor of peaches in 50 sweet and savory dishes, drawing on the life stories and experiences of America’s foremost peach farming family, the Masumotos of California’s central valley.
PEACHES FOR MONSIEUR LE CURÉ: A NOVEL by Joanne Harris
Even before it was adapted into the Oscar-nominated film starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, Joanne Harris’s Chocolat entranced readers with its mix of hedonism, whimsy, and, of course, chocolate. Now, at last, Chocolat’s heroine returns to the beautiful French village of Lansquenet in another, equally beguiling tale.
THE PEACH KEEPER: A NOVEL by Sarah Addison Allen
It’s the dubious distinction of thirty-year-old Willa Jackson to hail from a fine old Southern family of means that met with financial ruin generations ago. The Blue Ridge Madam—built by Willa’s great-great-grandfather and once the finest home in Walls of Water, North Carolina—has stood for years as a monument to misfortune and scandal. Willa has lately learned that an old classmate—socialite Paxton Osgood—has restored the house to its former glory, with plans to turn it into a top-flight inn. But when a skeleton is found buried beneath the property’s lone peach tree, long-kept secrets come to light, accompanied by a spate of strange occurrences throughout the town. Thrust together in an unlikely friendship, united by a full-blooded mystery, Willa and Paxton must confront the passions and betrayals that once bound their families—and uncover the truths that have transcended time to touch the hearts of the living.
PEACHES AND SCREAM by Susan Furlong
In the first Georgia Peach Mystery, when murder threatens her family’s orchard, Nola Harper is ready to pick out the killer and preserve the farm’s reputation… With suspicions and family tensions heating up faster than a cobbler in the oven, this sweet Georgia peach will have to prune through a list of murder suspects—before she too becomes ripe for the killer’s picking…INCLUDES RECIPES
THE BOOK OF PEACH by Penelope Stokes J.
Twenty-three years ago, beauty queen Peach Rondell left Mississippi and vowed never to return. Now she’s back, divorced and heartbroken, trying to figure out how her life went so terribly wrong. To escape her mama’s scrutinizing gaze, she spends her days in a little storefront diner called the Heartbreak Cafe, where, in the back booth, she scribbles away in her journal, waiting for enlightenment. Instead, Peach gets something even better: the unexpected friendship of an unlikely group of folks who show Peach that finding out where you’re going usually means embracing where you’re from.
FOR YOUNGER READERS
JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH by Roald Dahl, introduction by Aimee Bender

When James, a boy stuck living with his cantankerous aunts, is given magic crystals by a sympathetic wizard, he accidentally drops them at the foot of the peach tree outside his house, causing one of the fruits to grow the size of a house. Inside he finds oversized insects who promise him deliverance from his aunts, and soon the giant peach is rolling downhill, bound for the Atlantic Ocean and beyond on a magnificent adventure that will take James and his new friends far indeed.
JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH: THE SCENTED PEACH EDITION by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake

Lush illustrations perfectly complement this unique and graceful story.

Nevernight
Synopsis:
Mia Corvere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death. Destined to destroy empires, the child raised in shadows made a promise on the day she lost everything: to avenge herself on those that shattered her world. But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, and Mia must become a weapon without equal. Before she seeks vengeance, she must seek training among the infamous assassins of the Red Church of Itreya. Inside the Church's halls, Mia must prove herself against the deadliest of opponents and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and daemons at the heart of a murder cult. The Church is no ordinary school. But Mia is no ordinary student. The Red Church is no ordinary school, but Mia is no ordinary student. The shadows love her. And they drink her fear.

I have a strict rule about reading: I have to read 100 pages of a book before I decide whether or not I’m going to finish it. Usually at that point I’ll finish it regardless because once I’ve sunk 100 pages into a book, I’d rather finish it and be able to claim I’ve read it (I’ve actually only DNF’d one book that I can remember). Maybe it’s not the best rule, but it’s how I operate. But let me tell you: Nevernight needed those one hundred freebie pages. If I’ve read another book that starts as badly, it’s been long enough that I don’t remember it. The opening chapter has some interesting things going on, stylistically, but after that… yikes. Mia and Tric, another important character, make their way across a dangerous desert to the Red Church, chased by monsters. You’d think running from monsters towards a murder church might be at least kind of interesting, but you would be wrong. It’s mind-numbingly boring. At that point in the novel, neither Mia nor Tric had done anything to get me to care about them as characters, and their repartee is not nearly as witty and charming as it’s evidently meant to be. The monster fights go on way too long and the narration doesn’t help it at all. More on the narration in a bit.
As I was reading this interminably long, interminably bad section, I complained to my friend that it was like Jay Kristoff’s editors had completely left him out to dry. Someone, I said, should have told this poor guy how many readers he was going to lose in this section. Then I figured it out. This is infodropping, I realized. We have to know about these monsters and this desert for the climax. I was right. Those stupid monsters do come back, and for the record, they’re not much better. I realize that they’re necessary for the plot, but I still think the editors needed to take Kristoff aside and say, this does not work. Rewrite it.
Back to the narration. It’s unique, for sure, and—I’m sure—base-breaking. Between Nevernight and Illuminae, it’s clear that Kristoff is a narratively skilled and innovative writer. Nevernight has a very strong narrative voice. An unnamed character who loves Mia tells the story directly to the readers, and tells it reverently, evoking religious phrases and imagery at every turn. There is also a liberal use of footnotes, which provide historical and cultural context for the fictional society. The footnotes pulled me out of the story. I couldn’t get into a rhythm because every time I did, I’d have to jump out and read multiple paragraphs about something that only peripherally affected Mia’s story. A few of them did provide important information, but enough of them were merely padding that my brain glazed over them a little as I was reading. As I’ve said, it took me a long time to care about Mia, and this was compounded by all the tangents. It’s not that I dislike tangents. Sometimes they can work really well. But when they interrupt a story that’s already limping along with something that brings it to a standstill, they’re not doing any favors. When I hit the middle of the book, they were more forgivable.
The book totally transforms when Mia and Tric reach the Red Church. Before they got there, I was desperate to get Nevernight over with. Once they arrive, so too did my interest. The challenges and trials posed to the acolytes gave the novel a structure it had been sorely lacking, and the new characters—particularly Ashlinn and to a lesser degree Hush, Jessamine, and Carlotta—changed up the dynamics for the better. Mia really only took form as a full character with the other acolytes. While lots of readers seem to really like Tric, I’m pretty neutral about him. He had a pretty blatant love interest vibe from the start. There were a few moments when it seemed like Mia wasn’t interested in him, and I was excited, but then they hooked up and my original impression was solidified. I’m not inherently against characters who are there primarily to be love interests. I can get very invested in well-told romantic storylines. But I never got Tric and Mia, and their lust-filled relationship didn’t interest me, especially considering how risky it was and how little either of them actually got out of it.
And there were a few minor things in Nevernight that bothered me. There’s a single line about Mister Kindly, Mia’s supernatural shadow sidekick, being angry when Mia sleeps peacefully enough that there’s no fear for him to feed on that fascinated me, but it never goes anywhere. The names for the assassination classes are hokey; a few of them kind of make sense, but calling poisons class “Truths” is kinda dumb. This is probably petty, but… when Mia had her appearance drastically and magically changed and is given much larger breasts, I couldn’t help thinking, this was definitely written by a dude. Sorry, but I can’t imagine a female writer giving her character a magical boob job, and especially not for assassin training. I mean, really? This poor girl went from being basically flat-chested to being apparently huge and never had any back pain? Sure.
The novel as a whole relentlessly juxtaposes the sacred and the vulgar. Mia wishes to become a disciple in a church devoted to shadow and darkness, where murder is sacred and the most relentless killers are lauded. The very first chapter of the novel intertwines scenes of Mia’s first real murder with her first sexual encounter, repeating phrases and changing only a word or two in order to align the two experiences as closely as possible. Repeatedly, violence and lust are woven together, and combined with the idea of murder-as-religion, the three ideas—sex, violence, and worship—become a kind of holy/unholy trinity. It’s fascinating, and when Kristoff keeps the uncomfortable balance, it works brilliantly. Unfortunately, the balance tips at the end. Most of Nevernight acknowledges, at least partially, that taking lives is generally considered immoral and that, therefore, a church dedicated to “Our Lady of Blessed Murder” is probably at least a little shady (pun mostly intended). The end doesn’t, though. I’ll put a spoilery paragraph at the very end of this if you want to read why the ending disappointed me.
The middle of Nevernight is very good. It has an interesting hierarchy filled with morally ambiguous power structures and characters. The beginning, though, is a chore, and the ending pulls off a dramatic twist… at the expense of the only character I actually, truly liked. The narrative voice is initially intriguing, but it got old quickly and then I got numb to it and now can’t decide if I overall liked it or not. The same goes for the book itself. I enjoyed myself for probably around 65% of it, but was actively annoyed for a lot of the rest. I’m the rare reader who will come out of Nevernight lukewarm; I think the majority will run either very hot or very cold, because nearly everything about it is polarizing: the narration, the characters, the twist, the amount of sex and gore, the depiction of religion. I can see how every bit of it could be either adored or detested, and I’m surprised that I ended up stuck on the fence.
