Elisabeth Essen 2002

One of the most famous recorded versions of Elisabeth the musical is the proshot from 13th January 2002. It was recorded in occasion of Pia Douwes' derniere. The cast was very good but most of the watchers don't know the actors' names because the cast wasn't attached to the video at any point.

That means I needed to play detective. And I think I was successful! Here's the cast I discovered:

Mark Seibert and Oliver Arno

I love Oliver as Rudolf and Mark as Tod pairs very well with him. Oliver's Rudolf just longs for Tod in a way that makes this song work so well. I also just love Mark's voice and the presence he has.

2. Uwe Kröger and Oliver Arno

Repeat what I just said about Oliver's Rudolf. His pairing with Uwe's Tod was several years earlier so it wasn't quite as refined as it was when it came to Mark's Tod, but it was already excellent. And I mean Uwe is Uwe and the picture speaks for itself.

3. Oliver Arno and Martin Markert

Oliver is Oliver - I prefer him as Rudolf, but he does a bang-up job as Tod as well - so seductive. Martin's Rudolf is so open to being seduced and expressive.

4. Oliver Arno and Lukas Perman

Lukas is outstanding as Rudolf, though I find him a little too reserved when he is with Oliver in Schatten in the 2013 production. Oliver is a bit more refined as Tod here given that it is later.

5. Uwe Kröger and Jesper Tydén

Older but so excellent. Jesper's Rudolf has this slightly nervous feel to him that really is quite similar to Oliver's, and I like it. Uwe is amazing, and I feel that as a pair they work so well. Also while the Essen choreo isn't great in some ways, it did give us Tod pushing Rudolf to his knees.

Jesper Tyden's Rudolf

I really like Jesper as Rudolf, I just personally don’t love the Essen production and the heavily romanticised relationship between Elisabeth and Death, and how it feels like they tried to make it seem that Death 100% does not care for Rudolf rather than it being able to be up to interpretation. However he did also play Rudolf for a while in the Vienna Revivial.

favorite thing about them: the first german version of the song between rudolf and the rebels! love hearing jesper’s voice singing over the revels as they chant the melody from hass. how he looks at elisabeth during Wenn ich dein Spiegel wär and tries to reach for her hand and throws himself at her feet. god the essen  makes me want to cry, i’m just watching it for the first time and elisabeth actually walks towards him and reaches out to him before stopping herself. that makes me like elisabeth more since my barrier from liking her is how she treats rudolf. god she gets so close to touching his cheek and petting his hair. it makes it seem like she really wants to help him but thinks he needs to fight his own battles, rather than it coming off like she’s ignoring him and being selfish. i think this is now my favourite Wenn ich dein Spiegel wär . 

least favorite thing about them: it’s not really a dig at him, but as much as it’s interesting to see death kiss rudolf after rudolf shoots himself, as if he’s taking the soul out of the body, i do like rudolf getting the chance to kiss back. but idk it doesn’t bother me that much. it’s a nitpick because i couldn’t think of anything.

favorite line: Wie hoffte ich, dass du endlich das Schweigen bricht? (How much have I hoped for you to break the silence at last?)

brOTP: just, anyone, someone, please be this poor boy’s friend

OTP: rudolf/a-loving-supporting-family, rudolf/death

nOTP: i don’t know

random headcanon: likes to have fresh air and walk in the gardens. has a soft spot for flowers, but keeps it secret because his grandmother has told him it isn’t right for a boy to like flowers. i explored this in a fic i wrote

unpopular opinion: i dont know? i don’t know if rudolf/death is an unpopular ship but i relate a lot to rudolf, like a huge amount, and i have a crush on uwe’s der tod so... maybe it was inevitable 😂 but also i just like them together

song i associate with them: there’s probably some sad songs out there that i relate to that would probably suit rudolf as well. but like really sad/dark. off the top of my head i’m thinking of Solitary Envy/Hitorinbo Envy (the original japenese and/or juby’s english version) because it’s from the perspective of a child who’s neglected by their parents. i love that song. i’ve vented and belted it out and got emotional while singing it more times than i can count.
