“The phrase "fantastic realism" has been suggested for Schulz's art. It is an imprecise description, although it possesses some validity in its vague suggestion of a symbiosis of phantom with realistic observation. Perhaps surrealism? But where surrealism seeks shocking juxtapositions and utilizes the alogicality of the dream vision, Schulz is a master of the visual world: he sees and observes accurately and precisely. These perceptions suggest connections and consequences to Schulz, and upon them he builds myth—distant from the ordinary vision of the world, not surrealistically alogical, but in some way obvious, and, to use a neologism, ruled by Schulzian mythologic.

This means that individual images in Schulz's writing, intensified by the mythicization of the object, are truer and more evocative than realistic description. The story of the puppy Nemrod uses neither naturalistic description nor the conventional device of anthropomorphism and yet is both accurate and convincing. “She was a Polish-Romani classic poet and singer. She grew up nomadically however was literate, which was unusual for Polska Roma of that time. She learned to read by trading chickens in exchange for lessons with local villagers. This was frowned upon and if she was found reading, she was beaten and the book destroyed. She was married at 15 to a revered harpist who was 24 years her senior. She was very unhappy with her marriage and took to singing as an outlet for her frustrations. Soon after learning to sing, she began to compose her own ballads and songs based on traditional Romani storytelling and songwriting. In 1949, she was recognised for her talent by Jerzy Ficowski, who translated and published several of her poems in a magazine. Although the poem made Papusza known, the Romani-Polish minidictionary attached to it caused a negative turn in the poet's life. Her and Ficowski were accused of supporting the Polish communist government’s aim to create a Roma census. The Roma community began to regard Papusza as a traitor despite her maintaining that Ficowski exploited her work and had taken it out of context. She spent 8 months in a mental hospital and the next 34 years of her life alone and isolated.”
