partially incoherent thoughts at the moment but it is very interesting that the kind of tumblr esque “punk is ___” (insert kindness, insert being against the counter culture insert taylor swift) is, to me, very much an outgrowth of the vagrant records emo boom tying punkandemo as a concept into something mainstream and fundamentally earnest and curated and about feeling alienated moreso than angry or political or even diy, however that makes you feel. like personally i vibe a lot more with the vagrant model than than the victory one and do agree about the band-first approach of egan. but i think we are forever dealing with the repercussions of his rhetoric, the way he found “a new definition of punk in the rejection of the rigid orthodoxies of self-proclaimed punk” (greenwald; nothing feels good) moreso than the bands he signed or even the music they made because it became a calling card of the third wave and warped tour bands

#egan and vagrants motto of justifying their success in the mainstream by hitting on the ways in which it was trangressive. the like bucking #of punk's old convictions is textbook the way non-punk ppl try to justify how their interests are 'punk' bc it makes oldheads mad or whatevs #the difference is egan and his bands very clearly gave a shit about punk music- but the kids who took after him....well #but thats also why its funny to me to see mcr or fob band blogs reblog those trolly posts about punk or bringing back gatekeeping lmaooo #but on another level i see people talk about demographics and this idea that punk 'moved' to a more suburban well-to-do teen demographic #and thats just fundamentally untrue. there are working class ppl in punk itd be a lie to say their arent.#but with like hardcore esp. its college kids in college towns. well off. parents arent struggling. the dc scene its so noticeable #because of the capital all those kids had parents who were either professors or gov workers.#and thats very common across scenes. riot grrl. posthardcore. jersey rutgers house parties. etc etc #i dont really know where im going with this other than its interesting and not something i think ppl understand?#anyway finally reading nothing feels good thanks mr andy greenwald #my posts

yeah!!! for reference, this is my top artists of the last year, it includes vivaldi, paganini, and shostakovich. it doesnt show up but im also a big fan of mahler :3

had a conversation with @home-made-dynamite that made me realize that the NYC indie rock/avant-garde music scene has never held the slightest interest for me. Talking Heads? no. Sonic Youth? tried but no. Yeah Yeah Yeahs? definitely not. The Strokes? good lord no. The Velvet Underground? lots of respect for them aesthetically and for their influence, but still generally a no as part of my actual listening habits :/

#unfortunately my music taste probably does belong in la #either here or the midwest #obviously I love the early 2000s new jersey post-hardcore scene but that’s a completely different thing
