Chapter Six: The Warning (Jenni's POV)
We had to stop at a motel for the night because of the rain. There was only one room left, but I didn't mind. These were my cousin's friends. And a few of mine. We all took turns charging our Sega Nomads during the storm until the power went out. Ayla, Zoe, and I huddled on the bed while the guys dug through their bags for flashlights. "Yo, Virg, why don't you do Uncle Fester?" Richie suggested. We all sat still, wondering what that meant until Virgil took a lightbulb out of his bag. Virgil stuck the base in his mouth, and it lit up. I thought he was so cool.
"Dope," I smiled. Ayla and Zoe playfully shoved me back and forth. They knew I liked him, but I hadn't worked up the courage to tell him.
Bart crossed his arms. "Yeah, yeah... Whatever. The power's probably gonna be out all night. We're not gonna be able to charge our games until morning," Bart muttered. He'd been moping the whole trip, and I couldn't figure out why. I hadn't seen him in months, and he was so cold. I frowned and rubbed the back of my neck.
"What's his damage?" I mumbled.
Ayla tugged on my sleeve. "He came to see you, and I think he's disappointed that you haven't paid him any mind since you met you-know-who," Ayla whispered, "My brother gets like that sometimes... You've seen it."
"Oh!" I exclaimed before jumping up. "Bart, I'm starved."
He raised his brow. "Huh?" Bart questioned.
"There's a Burger Fool if you wanna come with me. We can get everybody something to eat," I suggested. Bart nodded excitedly, and he pulled his coat out of his duffel.
"I know your jacket isn't as warm as mine is," Bart replied as he tossed me his jacket. It was expensive. Grandpa got me the same one, but I forgot to pack it. "Besides, I think I look goofy in it." I gave him my varsity jacket, and he threw it over his hooded sweater. I took the keys off the counter —Bart was a terrible driver, and I didn't want to hurt his feelings— and we ran to the car in the rain. Bart's whole demeanor changed. Thanks, Ayla.
The downpour was intense, but having my cousin in the passenger seat to remember everyone's orders was comforting. Bart remembered just about everything. He knew birthdays, fast food orders, and all sorts of things from memory. I thought it was cool, but he never did. Bart always treated me like the cool cousin, but I knew better. Bart was the coolest guy I'd ever met. He was my cousin, after all. "What's up with you and Virgil?" Bart asked. "I thought you came to see me..."
"I did come to see you! Wait... Did Virgil say something?" I questioned. Bart chuckled. "Did he?"
"I heard him whispering to Richie about the cute one... I'm pretty sure he was talking about you. Why? Do you like him back or something? Because I can-."
"You don't have to," I interrupted.
"Yeah, but I could put in a good word for you. Virgil already thinks you're pretty... I'd only have to say one thing.Go for it," Bart offered. I nodded and pulled into the drive-thru. Bart ordered for everyone.
He ordered double everything, which was okay because Grandpa gave us a ton of money for the trip. Grandpa wanted us to care for each other, especially since he couldn't get time off to drive us to Happy Harbor. The power was on when we arrived at the hotel, but everyone looked spooked. "What happened?" I asked as I hung up my jacket on the coat rack.
The phone rang, and everyone sat around staring at it. Bart sighed and answered the phone. "Hello?" Bart answered. "What? Listen here-."
I took the phone from Bart. "Sorry, hi. I'm his cousin. Who is this?" I asked.
"Don't go up to Happy Harbor. You're all going to die there," a man warned us.
"Conner? Is that you?" I asked.
Bart tugged on my sleeve. "Let me talk to him. I'll give that chump-."
"You're all going to die... Turn back if you know what's good for you," the man warned. He hung up, and I tapped the phone against my open palm. I felt sick.
"He said we're gonna die... He called six times," Richie mumbled.
"Well, he's just trying to scare us. Come on, let's eat," I replied. Bart walked toward Virgil and whispered something. Virgil dropped his game in his lap and looked at him. Bart nodded and glanced over at me before whispering something else. Virgil's lips curled into a half-smile, and he looked directly at me. I looked down and passed him his bag of food. He pretended to overshoot so he'd touch my hand, and I grinned.
"You trying to sit with me?" Virgil asked. I nodded. He grabbed his food, and I plopped down next to him. I hadn't even noticed everyone moved to the other bed and the table. It was just Virgil and me. I tore my bag open, and he did the same while we ate our burgers. "You feelin' me, or was your cousin messing around?" I nodded, and he frowned.
"Yeah, I think you're seriously floating," I replied. Virgil looked down at his fries and chuckled.
"Floating? I think the word you're looking for is fly," he corrected before bouncing on the cheaply made bed. "Wait. You think I'm fly?" I giggled and nodded.
"Yeah... I'm not so good with slang, but if fly means cute and cool and all that other stuff, then yeah," I replied. Virgil smiled and nodded. We finished eating, and Virgil threw my trash away. Bart turned the tv on and gave me a thumb's up.
Virgil laid back on the pillows and patted the bed beside him. I lay next to him, and he offered for me to play a few games of Mr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on his Sega Nomad while I waited for mine to charge. It was one of my favorite games, even if it was just for kids.
Thunder rattled the motel the whole night, but I don't think it kept us from sleeping. I dozed off next to Virgil. But when I woke up, I was between Ayla and Zoe. Zoe talked in her sleep, and Bart paced around the motel every few hours. Richie didn't sleep at all, but he pretended to. I waited until Bart was asleep to wriggle out of bed and wave him over.
"What's up?" Richie whispered as he sat at the foot of the bed.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" I asked as I leaned forward. He laughed it off, but I could tell something bothered him.
"Do you think we're gonna die?" Richie asked.
"Existentially or-?"
"Jenni, I'm serious. That guy sounded like he meant business," Richie whispered.
"He hasn't met me... I'll kill a man with my bare hands before I let someone hurt my cousin," I whispered, "You're staring at the real threat."
Richie's eyes widened, and I patted him on the cheek. "Sleep tight," I whispered. Richie returned to his bed, and I crawled back into my spot.

Chapter Two: The Premonition (Charley's POV)
I sat on the roof, smoking while I waited for Jason to page me. He didn't like me smoking around him, so I tried to smoke before and after we hung out. I gave myself enough time to shower and change clothes if I needed to. He never complained, but I knew he preferred I didn't smell like I just smoked a bowl when we hung out.
I met him through Eddie a few years back, and he seemed chill. A little weird, but we were all kind of strange. I was new to Jersey, but he welcomed me in and made me feel like I fit in there, even though I didn't. I didn't stay on the roof long because it was freezing out.
I showered and changed clothes before grabbing my keys to head out. Jason came in the door with an empty suitcase. "We're going," Jason announced, "We're going to Happy Harbor this weekend."
I burped smoke and apologized before plopping on the couch. Jason said a lot of weird crap, but I chalked that up to brain damage. He'd been having premonitions about his brother, and he told me something loomed just outside the gates of the immortal. I didn't know what it meant, but I don't think he did either. Jason washed his hands and poured a glass of milk. "Why are we going to Happy Harbor?" I asked.
"Because my brother is at the center of the disturbance... And he's going. Do you wanna come?" Jason asked. I shrugged and nodded. "Do you?"
"Yeah, yeah. I'll come... Jason, did you sleep here last night, man?" I asked. He shook his head. Sometimes he didn't sleep, and he'd drive around. He'd been like that since I met him. I met him in the kitchen, took a frozen pizza out of the fridge, and slapped it onto a pan. Jason sighed and took the pizza out of the box before placing it in the oven.
Most people would think two people like us shouldn't live together, but I think I reminded him of somebody. And I liked having somebody around that didn't treat me like a freak. He also didn't lose it when he walked in on me with some guy I met, in flagrante delicto, as one of the Sisters of Mercy would call it. I call it the Lotus.
Actually, that was recent. I tried to hide the fact that I preferred to drive a stick from time to time, but it was always hard to hide it from the people I lived with. Jason was different, though. When the guy left, I collected myself and tried to explain, but he shrugged it off and said he'd seen worse. So, sue me if I don't judge the guy for his hallucinations.
"I drove up to Blüdhaven to see my brother. He got in right before I got ready to leave. I waited for him all night... You should probably start packing tonight. We leave tomorrow morning so we can beat my brother there," Jason mumbled. I sat down and pulled my hair into a bun.
I didn't tell him what to do unless I thought he was doing something dangerous, so I didn't give him my opinion on the whole vacation thing. Besides, I wanted to get out of Gotham for the weekend, and Happy Harbor sounded like a relaxing vacation spot. "Jay, what's the weather like?" I asked. I laughed involuntarily and ran a hand over my face to pull myself together.
"It's in Rhode Island, so I imagine it's freezing. The hottest it gets up there is eighty," Jason answered, "And it's the middle of fall, so I wouldn't bank on it being a nice sunny seventy out there."
I forgot how sarcastic he could be when he wasn't having premonitions. I didn't hate it, though. I think that was his way of telling people he was okay. Jason wasn't a touchy-feely emotional guy, but neither was I, so it worked. "Your brother's gonna be okay," I whispered. I didn't have any siblings, so I didn't understand all the feelings surrounding him and his brother. Whenever I saw them together, I thought they hated each other.
"I got you a suitcase... Charley, remember to pack. We leave at six tomorrow morning," Jason explained. I zoned out after that, but I think he was monologuing. I came to when I smelled the pizza he'd taken out of the oven, and I watched as Jason took a slice for himself. I blinked hard and started eating.
There was something so sensual about the first bite of food after a smoke. I shut my eyes and made a soft noise as I ate the crust first. Jason chuckled. He didn't like me smoking, but he got a kick out of me eating after a smoke. "I've never seen anyone eat a pizza ass first before," Jason laughed.
"Listen-." I fell into a fit of laughter mid-sentence. "Ass first?"
"Yeah, because the crust fucking sucks. No one eats the worst part first," Jason cracked up. I hate to say it, but he was cute when he smiled. I always wanted to go there with Jason because he felt safe, but I never got any indication that he was anything other than straight. Besides, it never would've worked. Jason had a lot going on in his head, and I did too. He was a for life type, and I was more of a for the night type. I was bummed after that because I stopped laughing and returned to my large pizza in silence. About an hour after I ate, I took a nap and packed for our trip.
Jason took his shower and fell asleep on the couch, where he talked in his sleep. I tried to ignore it because some of the stuff he said in his sleep made me feel paranoid. But this time, it was different. Worse. Jason tossed and turned on the couch so roughly that I sat on the floor in front of him to keep him from falling. He grabbed my shoulder in his sleep and scared the shit out of me. "Stay out of the water. Stay out," Jason moaned, "Charley. The water." A chill ran up my spine, and he shot up, panting as he searched around the room.
"Jason... Jason," I whispered as I grabbed his wrist. "Jason, are you-."
Jason jumped off the couch and into my arms. I never saw him that emotional before. It freaked me out. "Please don't swim this weekend, Charley. Promise me you won't swim," Jason begged. I hesitantly rubbed his back to calm him down, but I was as scared as he was. Jason held on so tight my back cracked. Oh yeah, I forgot to say the dude was jacked. Thick neck, giant biceps, built like a fucking tank.
"If I promise to stay away from the water this weekend, will you let go of me?" I asked. Jason let go and nodded. He had to pull himself together, but I was still spooked. "I promise... And next time you call my name like that in your sleep, I'm gonna need you to take me out to dinner, Kid." Jason chuckled and shook his head. "Why'd you want me to come with you tomorrow? Be real with me."
"We'll all be together... I think we'll be alright if we stay together," Jason whispered. He stood up and walked away before hiding his face in his hands. "I've never had one that vivid before... Charley, please don't forget what you promised me... Please don't forget."
I felt terrible for him. Eddie said he wasn't always like that. Before the accident, Eddie said he wasn't as fearful. Everyone warned me not to listen to his delusions or feed into them, but his instincts were good, and he'd never been wrong before about the normal-sounding stuff. It was more than reasonable for me to believe that staying out of the water in an area where it'd be freezing out was a solid warning.
Jason paced back and forth by the fire escape, and my hands shook as I tried to pull myself together for him. We couldn't both be scared. I owed it to him to be the brave one for once. If I owed anybody anything, it was Jason. "Jason, c'mere. Stop-. Stop pacing and look for a minute. Nothing's gonna happen to me because I'm gonna listen to you," I reassured him. Jason nodded, but I could see his mind was already made up. He looked like he wanted to cry. It was like I was already gone. I'd never seen him like that. It was weird and fucked up, and I dreaded the trip ahead. I was so fucked up over it that I couldn't even think to smoke. Instead, I decided to keep my head straight until we got to the Harbor on Saturday. I thought it'd give us both some peace of mind. Still, I didn't think Jason would sleep after that. There was no way. And there was no way he'd be able to drive on forty-five minutes of sleep. Relaxing trip, my ass.

Chapter One: The Flesh (Dick's POV)
The flesh was soft and warm. I could feel the tha-thump of his heart beating against my lips, and I bared my teeth. I wanted to devour him whole. I'd never felt desire like that. It was so much deeper than lust, and he could feel it too. He shivered when I touched him. It ran through our veins, pulling us together. Magnetic debris in the very fiber of our being. It would never have been enough to fuck him. No. Something inside me burned to be part of him in an impossible way. I needed him. I pressed my lips against his chest. Pressing and traveling, pressing and traveling, pressing and traveling until our lips met. He was intoxicating.
He made three gasping breaths when our lips parted the first time. I wanted him so badly that it made my head spin. I pressed my forehead against his shoulder and lost my nerve. I couldn't fuck him. I didn't want to sully his perfectly freckled skin with cum. It would've been like shattering a stained glass window or dragging a dagger through a Monet. His cock bobbed up and down against his belly, begging to be noticed and touched, but I couldn't do it. He opened his eyes and glanced down at me lazily. I raised my head and looked into his eyes. He knew I wouldn't be able to do it, but it didn't stop him from forming a satisfied grin.
Instead of talking, he turned on his side and kissed my neck and throat, tracing my jawline with his fingers. Then my neck. My shoulders. He slid a hand down my pants, and I gasped as I held my hand over the front of my jeans. I felt the heat of his mouth against my neck and at the bottom of my ear. I kicked and writhed beneath his smooth and capable hands. An artist's hands. He pulled his hand away, and I offered a look of desperate betrayal, and he chuckled, tasting his fingers before returning his hand to its rightful place. I trembled as he ran his thumb over my head, dabbing at my precum. The whimper that escaped my throat frightened us, and he covered my mouth. His thumb was still wet on my cheek as he held back a laugh. He hid his face in the pillow to suppress his laughter.
He got up and pulled my clothes off, throwing them to the side before rubbing his body against mine. Our cocks touched, and the friction of his frenetic grinding made me sweat. I rolled my hips to make up for the moments of space between our bodies. He kissed my neck, shoulders, cheeks, and lips as I clutched his sheets, pushing against his weight with desperate craving and open mouth. It was dizzying. Hips, shoulders, neck, mouth, chests. Fuck.. I wished I could make noise. I wished I could speak. I would've told him how beautiful he looked. It was the fiercest he'd ever been, and I imagined he was devouring me whole.
He rolled off of me, cock drooling and bobbing against his stomach. I opened and closed my fists, holding onto his sheets as I tried to stave off my orgasm. I was so close I could taste it. He went through his drawer, poured oil into his palm, slathered it over his body, and returned to me. The oil heated up as our bodies collided. His hips crashed against mine. He gasped and made a soft noise as he shook his head at me. He rolled off of me to take a breath, and I returned to kissing his neck and chest, and stomach until my bottom lip brushed his head. He raked his fingers through my hair and held my bangs out of my face. I wouldn't let fear overpower me this time. I touched his tip against my lips and took his cock in my mouth.
He raised one of his knees, and I gagged. I pulled up for air and drooled onto his cock. I'd never done that before, but I wanted to taste him. I bobbed up and down until I could take his full length. I choked, and my eyes watered as I tried to look into his eyes. I hoped he would open his eyes and smile at me. I came up for air and went down on him a third time.
He lifted his head to look me in the eyes and gave my scalp an affectionate scratch. I could hear his soft guttural groaning. He used my hair to pull and push me down on his cock. I pulled up and gasped for air, and he sat up and wiped my mouth. I held my breath as he thumbed my bottom lip and ran his hand down my chest. He poured oil into his hand and wrapped his hand around my cock. It was so close to his face that it made my body tense. He poured more oil into his hand and applied it to my shaft and balls. I gasped at the heat of the oil as he stroked me gently. I held my breath as he kissed my hip bones. He looked up at me as if he were asking for permission. I nodded and shut my eyes as his soft lips brushed my head, and he slowly engulfed me with his mouth. He'd done this before. He'd done this with his perfect lips and tongue and throat. And tongue. And throat. Fuck. And his lips. The walls of his cheeks were softer than his hands were. I ran my rough palms up his face and into his hair, careful not to disturb his curls. He placed one hand on my hipbone to hold me steady, and I opened my eyes. We met eyes, and he looked into the deepest parts of me. Tears streamed down his cheeks, and his nose ran, but he still looked beautiful. He pulled up for air and took his t-shirt to wipe his face before he ran the point of his tongue up the seamline of my balls and up my shaft to my head, where he gently skimmed against my tip, teasing me until I thought I'd lose my mind. Then the warmth of his mouth welcomed me in once more. He held his mouth tightly around me, taking me into his throat, and as soon as I felt like thrusting, he'd pull up and suck on my balls. I shut my eyes and clenched my ass until I couldn't hold it any longer. I hadn't even realized he'd used his hands, but I went weak in the legs, rolled my eyes back, and came in his mouth. I wanted to stop cumming and apologize, but it was out of my hands. It felt so good, twitching inside his mouth as he raised up, tightening his lips around my head, sucking me dry. I couldn't open my eyes.
He didn't seem to mind. He swallowed, licked his lips, and grinned before thumbing my head. I shut my eyes and chewed my lip to keep from making noise. It was so sensitive and hurt a little, but I didn't want him to stop. I grabbed his hand to make him stop because I knew we'd be caught. I flopped next to him and caught my breath as I started to go soft, and I watched with half-open eyes as he milked himself dry. I watched as he shuddered and splattered all over his stomach. He took a tissue box and wiped himself off, and turned on his side to do the same to me.
I wanted to fall asleep there, but it wasn't safe. I got dressed and crept down the fire escape. I couldn't risk getting caught, so I rode my bike home before sunrise. I got a page from him before I got home. R U SAFE. I knew it was from him.
YES.
I climbed into my apartment through the fire escape and jumped when I saw my brother sitting on the couch. "What the fuck do you think you're doing?" I asked. He shrugged. "You can't just break and enter because we're brothers-."
"I needed to talk to you, and you weren't answering your phone... Wait... Why are you sneaking into your apartment, Dick?" Jason grinned.
"Nunya... What do you want?" I asked. I smelled my shirt as I took it off and threw it in the hamper. "And hurry up because I've been up all night." Jason poured himself a cup of coffee and dropped in a scoop of ice cream.
Jason had a strange look in his eye as if he could see something I couldn't. He always acted weird when he came to see me. It was because of something that happened to him in high school. He never talked to anyone about it, so I never thought to ask. Still, it made him seem spooky whenever he stared like that. "Jason," I called him back to the present.
"I wanted to take you up on your invitation," Jason mumbled.
I was almost afraid to ask him why. Jason rarely left Gotham, let alone Jersey, so I wondered what mysterious reason he had for joining me. "Okay... But couldn't you have just called and left me a message?" I questioned. Jason shrugged. He wouldn't look at me.
"I wanted to see you, I guess," Jason answered. A lie. Most of the time, he broke into my apartment to eat and leave cryptic notes. Threatening, cryptic notes.
I left the room and took my shower, still thinking of Joey's skin against mine. I wanted to call, but I knew I shouldn't. It was the first time we'd ever done that, but I hoped it wouldn't be the last. It took me nearly a year to work up the courage to kiss him, let alone fuck him. I lathered the soap on my body as I thought about how it felt. The warm oil dripping off his body onto mine, the smooth feeling of his cock sliding against mine, and his lips. I could've cum just from the touch of his lips against my skin. I ran my hands over my chest and shoulders, finding myself in the same intoxicated position that led me to Joey's house in the first place. I let my hand slip down to my balls and thought about how good it felt to cum in his mouth. I wished I could go back. I wanted to go back and feel his hands, mouth, and body against mine. I groaned and shot my load down the drain. "Fuck... Okay. Fuck," I whispered through my orgasm.
I rinsed my hair and skin and dressed for bed. Jason sat at my kitchen counter, watching TV as he ate a cup of noodles. "G'night," Jason muttered with a full mouth. I raised a hand in reply before falling asleep on the couch in front of the TV.

Chapter Eleven: The Body in the Gulch (Roy's POV)
Donna turned away from me in bed, hugging herself, closing in. It’d been like that for a while. I just wanted to hold her. “Donna?” I whispered. “Donna… Do you want me to go to sleep on the couch? I will if you—.”
“I need to take a shower,” Donna whimpered like she wanted to cry.
I wanted to reach out and touch her, but it didn’t feel appropriate. “Donna, does something hurt? Did I—?” Donna shook her head. “Then, why are you so upset? Tell me what’s wrong, and I’ll try to fix it.”
“You didn’t do anything… I just—. I feel off. Don’t you feel weird, Roy?” Donna asked. She looked at me with her big blue eyes, and I opened my arms and nodded.
“It’s this place. And we saw those people hit that—.”
Donna hid her face in my chest, and I felt sick to my stomach. All I could do was hold her and pretend I wasn’t scared out of my wits. Something about the land here felt… Cursed. And I don’t say that about a lot of places. I could feel Donna trembling, and I wondered if she could hear my heart beating fast in my chest. I liked the lightning and thunder. I liked the cool, calm mornings after the rain. But nothing was calm or cool. The air went from freezing cold last night to muggy in the morning and something in Donna switched. Her skin felt cold and damp as she stopped shaking and touched my chest. “Donna?” I questioned.
“Maybe that shower could wait,” Donna whispered as she gave my shoulders a little push as she took me down. I can’t remember most of what happened between her doing that and breakfast… I can’t remember most of what happened. I saw her in the kitchen, wearing my boxer shorts, and making bacon.
She wore a cutoff t-shirt for some obscure band in Seattle. “Donna, I—. How’d we get here?” I asked.
Donna laughed and rustled a hand through my hair. “Was it that good?” Donna whispered.
“Must’ve been. Wish I could remember. Donna, I feel kinda weird. Did I hit my head or somethin’?” I questioned. She wasn’t afraid anymore. It was almost like she wasn’t the same anymore. I looked at her, and I could almost see something different behind her eyes. Something vacant, lacking her natural warmth. I reached out to touch her, but I froze.
“Nope. You didn’t hit your head. Maybe you’re a little dizzy,” Donna answered. She bit her bottom lip as she touched my cheek. Her hands were ice-cold. It scared me a little. I wanted to recoil, but I didn’t want to hurt her feelings.
Raven entered the room in an old-timey robe. The quilted ones with the buttons and collar. It was classy. Old Hollywood type classy. She looked at me with wild, wide eyes and said my name aloud. “Roy,” said Raven in her calm and cool way. “Can you follow me to the car in a few minutes? I think I left something in the trunk.”
“Alright. Are you gonna go in that?” I asked. She looked down at her outfit and laughed.
“I’ll be out in just a minute,” Raven replied.
Bette stepped out of her room with sunglasses and one of those skirts girls wear over bikini bottoms. She hugged Donna, leaning over her shoulder to look at breakfast. Then Kole came out of the room in a white t-shirt with lace frilly stuff and a pink button-down dress that went to her knee. She wore frilly socks… And black dress shoes. They were a little dirty, like she’d walked in a puddle and forgot to shine them up again. Then, she looked at Donna and Bette, then at me. “I think I forgot something in the car. I can’t find my rainboots. I think they’re in the trunk,” Kole stated. She looked down at her feet as if someone would chastise her for forgetting.
“That’s fine. I’m walking Raven to the car in a minute. You can come with us then,” I replied. Kole looked up and smiled. “The rain had everybody out of sorts last night. I’m sure everybody forgot a little something in the car.” I nudged Bette and Donna, wondering if they’d left something, too.
“I left my hiking bag,” Donna stated, “Roy, can you bring that back for me?”
“Sure. The three of us will bring back whatever’s left in the trunk. How about we meet you guys at the beach after we finish up?”  I suggested. Donna looked at Bette and they nodded.
Once Raven finished getting dressed, I took her and Kole to the car. Kole blazed ahead, but Raven and I trekked behind, so we could chat. “Donna’s acting strange this morning,” Raven noted. I nodded in agreement, trying not to say anything damning about Donna. The last thing we needed on this trip was paranoia and backbiting. Besides, they weren’t like that. They were good friends. All of them, and I didn’t want to put a wedge in that by expressing my discomfort with a few lost minutes and a weird interaction with Donna.
“How’d you sleep, Raven?” I questioned to take the heat off of Donna for a minute.
“Alright… And you?” Raven asked in reply.
I squinted as the sun bounced off the lake. “Raven? Do you feel weird about this trip? I don’t know… Ever since we got here, I’ve been having second thoughts. Maybe we should go—.”
“Remember that song Hotel California?” Raven interrupted.
“You don’t think we can leave?” I asked. Raven frowned at me, pushing her hair back as she approached the car. “Raven… Raven, wait.” I grabbed her wrist. She looked at me with a mixture of nausea and despair in her eyes. They were a funny bluish green, so light, but so heavy with sorrows. I let her go and sighed.
“Roy, what’s done is done. It’s already written,” Raven whispered.
Dick’s car was already in the lot. Dick, Vic, Kory, and Karen were talking to the police. Joey was standing on the other end of the lot talking to some jarhead-looking guy and a police officer. Joey looked like he wanted to throw up, and Dick looked a little confused and frightened. It was hard to frighten Dick, so I knew whatever it was, it was serious. Karen seemed out of it, like she couldn’t make sense of whatever happened. Vic consoled Kory, who was beside herself.
Then, I caught a little bit of what Joey signed from where I was standing. “I saw him. My brother was driving. I thought he was robbed because he was naked, so I put the blanket over him,” Joey signed. His hands had blood and dirt on them. His brother looked at me. He interpreted for his brother in between glances.
“Raven, did you see what Joey said?” I whispered. She looked straight past me at Kory as she approached us. She headed straight for Raven and embraced her. Raven started to shake as she stood with her hands out by her sides. It shook her. “Kory? What happened? Is everybody okay?”
“It was a kid. Someone left a—. X’Hal, help me,” Kory sobbed. I pulled her into a hug, and she cried on me for a little bit. I felt sick.
I wanted to believe they were hit by a car in the rain, but the part about the kid not having any clothes—. That sounded a lot like murder. How was I supposed to get past that part? Vic made his way over, and he touched Raven’s shoulder.
“I thought you guys arrived last night,” Vic whispered.
“We did… We didn’t get to unpack in the rain. We did—. We didn’t—. Did you see what happened?” Raven asked.
“I didn’t see much. Kory and Joey got out of the car first. Dick and Joey’s brother jumped out to make sure they didn’t get hurt getting down there. It was steep and wet out—. I think that kid was murdered from what they said. I offered to hike to the nearest payphone with Joey’s brother, but he wasn’t having it. Karen and Dick went with him,” Vic replied. “They’ve blocked the road off, haven’t they?” Raven asked. Vic nodded. There was no escaping it now. Whatever ominous feeling Raven and I had was justified in that moment. And the worst part was, none of us would be able to escape it.

Chapter Five: The Omen (Lilith's POV)
Donna suggested the trip, and Roy insisted on driving us. I invited Bette and Kole, and Donna requested Raven join us. It was the only time we all had off to vacation. We planned on spelunking and walking the beach and doing all sorts of things, but the closer the trip got, the more we all started feeling uneasy. Raven read a book, Bette nibbled on trail mix, Donna messed around with the map, Roy ignored her directions, and Kole slept soundly on my shoulder. Occasionally, I'd lean over and glance at Raven's book or check if Kole was alright, but the car was mostly silent.
Roy stopped in the middle of the road, and everyone looked up. "Injured animal in the road... Hold on," Roy whispered. He rolled the window down partway. "Hey! Do you need-?"
"No, thanks! Can you get around?" a man yelled, and Roy answered back before driving around them. Raven grabbed my wrist.
"Did you feel that?" Raven questioned. I shushed her. Where she came from, those feelings weren't as foreign to normal people. But yeah, I felt it. A full-body cold started in my frontal lobe and penetrated my scalp, trickling down my neck, shoulders, and chest like ice water. Fear. Primal. Final. It was different than regular fear. It was dreadful, helpless, hopeless. That was a fear, unlike anything I'd ever felt before.
"Mhm," I mumbled.
Raven and I felt things. Other people's feelings, the feelings of animals, and sometimes places. Empaths. Raven was more in tune with it than I was, but it came at a cost for both of us. She was heavily affected by the emotions of others, and it showed on her face all the time. I could mask it, but she never had to. Donna touched Roy's arm for Roy's comfort. Not hers. I could feel his distress.
He sighed. "Call me superstitious, but I've only seen a dead coyote a few times before, and nothing good ever comes from it... And that coyote isn't gonna make it. Looks like something ate it up," Roy stated. Donna whispered in his ear, and he shook his head.
The car fell silent until we reached Happy Harbor. I woke Kole, and we walked in the dark to our cabin. Raven had a dizzy spell as soon as we walked in, and I reached out to help her, but I felt it too. Bette grabbed me, Kole grabbed Raven, and they sat us down. "Yikes, you guys good?" Bette questioned. Raven and I nodded. The energy there was outrageous. Raven's hand brushed mine, and I saw a flash of Bette covered in blood and screaming. I recoiled. Raven stood up and took a deep breath.
"Let's go make s'mores while it's still early," Raven suggested. Everyone eased up, and we grabbed our jackets and the bag of roasting sticks and walked to the beach. Roy and Donna lagged behind, so we couldn't see them holding hands. We all knew about them, but they were worried about being labeled as an item and messing up their friendship. I didn't have to be an empath to see it wouldn't last.
When we got to the beach, a girl and her three male friends had already started a bonfire, so we shared our s'mores. They were calm and collected, so it helped everyone else relax. Then, a brunette and a redhead with a bowl cut came to the beach with hot dogs, and the brown-haired guy made a pass at me. Bette lied and told him it was a gay beach, but I don't think she had to lie to this one to leave me alone. He looked like the type of guy that was more than willing to take no for an answer and move on. I could feel the grief coming off his body, so I could've let him down without hurting his feelings.
We were at the beach until it got too cold to be outside. Once we returned to the cabin, we divvied up rooms and beds. Three rooms. Three beds. Bette and Kole wanted to stay up and paint each other's nails, so they bunked together. I asked Raven to stay with me, so Roy and Donna wouldn't have to find a way to lie to be together. The worst kept secret in America. Roy took his jacket off, and I glanced at his tattoo. Roy met eyes with me, and I leaned forward. I wanted to get a closer look and get a laugh from him. "Can I help you?" Roy laughed.
"Just getting a look at the details," I replied.
Roy nodded, and everyone got ready to take their showers. First, Roy, then Donna, Raven, Bette, Kole, and finally me. I didn't mind. I climbed into bed with Raven, and she turned to me. "What did you see?" Raven asked.
"You first," I whispered.
"I think Kole is going to kill someone," Raven whispered. I knit my brows.
"I think Bette's gonna kill somebody," I replied, "Maybe we should talk about something else..."
Raven looked at me, and we held eye contact for what felt like forever. "Do you think it'd be the same?" Raven questioned. I took a breath. I knew what she meant. I thought about it before.
She drew my hand to her chest, and I let her touch mine. I could feel the smooth outline of her breast beneath the thin, satin fabric of her lingerie. I passed curiosity and ventured into arousal as my hand slid down her stomach and came into contact with her thigh. Her skin was as icy and silky as it looked. "We should stop," I whispered as I tried to gain control of my senses.
"Do you want to stop?" Raven questioned. I shook my head, and she leaned forward so close that our lips brushed against each other. Our eyes were wide open at first, but her lips were so soft. When she ran her foot against my leg, I shut my eyes and melted into the ecstasy of the moment. And then I felt it. Her arousal interlaced with something else. Something innocent and sweet.
"Are you-? You're a virgin?" I questioned. She nodded. "You want me to take your virginity?"
Raven answered with a tentative kiss, and she pushed me down further into the center of the bed by my shoulders. I pulled her nightgown up underneath the sheets and let my fingers brush against the front of her panties. My middle finger ran up and down against the cotton fabric as she lifted her leg, throwing it over my thigh. We kissed a third time, with confidence, as I hooked my thumb in her waistband. I could hear her breathing in between kisses. Then thunder crackled, and lightning flashed, scaring us apart. We turned, facing opposite sides of the room.
I don't know if Raven slept afterward or if she lay awake. But I know one thing for sure. I still wanted to fuck her. That feeling was mine. Undeniably mine.

Chapter Ten: The Calm Before The Storm (Charley's POV)
Jason seemed alright in the car for the first twenty minutes of the trip. It wasn’t until we left Gotham that he started acting weird. And when I say strange, I mean, he started talking to himself in the car. “Jay, you can talk to me. You know that, right?” I whispered. He turned to me, and his eyes were bloodshot. “Jason… Did you eat before we left?”
“I ate a few of those weird Toll House cookies… Oh nooooo ,” Jason moaned as he pressed his palms to his temples. I pulled over and shushed him. “Charley, I feel weird. I feel so weird.”
“Goddammit, Jason... Listen, it’ll pass. You should try to sleep it off,” I replied. I couldn’t handle any more freaky vague warnings about the trip he invited me to take.
“Can we talk first? I’m not tired yet,” Jason mumbled. I nodded as I started driving. I didn’t want to snap at him. I liked him too much to do that. “I like living with you… More than I’ve liked living with anyone.”
“I like living with you, too. Jay, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for you to eat that. I’m so—.”
“Pull over,” Jason whispered. “Pull over. Pull over!” Jason shouted. I stopped the car on the side of the road, and Jason laid his forehead on the dash. “Why do my legs feel gone?”
“Don’t panic. Panicking makes everything worse. Shut your eyes and lay back… Listen to my voice and hold onto my words,” I replied gently.
Jason obeyed. He tilted his head back, his mouth open wide as he sighed. I saw it in my mind. A flash of him in my head, sweaty and naked, his body trembling under mine. I could smell his skin. I could feel him. As soon as the thought came to me, it disappeared, leaving me confused… And a little turned on. He grabbed my hand and squeezed it. “I feel light… Too light,” Jason whispered.
“It’s just a feeling. You feel my hand. Don’t you?” I asked. He nodded. “How does that make you feel?”
“They’re soft. Do you want to know a secret?” Jason questioned.
I hesitated before locking my fingers with his. “We don’t have to do secrets right now… It wouldn’t be fair… How about I tell you something? I wanted to set you up with this goth girl at the bookstore. I thought she’d be your speed, but I—.”
“I don’t want her. I like someone,” Jason interrupted.
I smiled at him, tapping his arm as I started the car. “Yeah? That’s sick, Jay. How serious are you?” I questioned.
Jason let the seat back and he ran a hand through his bangs, breathing heavily with his mouth open. Dammit. My palms started sweating, and I took my hand away. “Do you feel that?” Jason panted. I started driving toward the cabins. “Charley…” Jason squirmed in his seat, but I couldn’t look directly at him. “Charley, do you feel that?”
“What is it?” I asked.
“Heavy and tight… And the air feels kind of thick… I think I need to get out of the car and—.” He covered his mouth, leaning forward with one hand wrapped around his stomach. Then, he made a little noise and that’s when I realized… He was turned on, too.
“Jay, listen… I probably shouldn’t have asked about girls. Let’s talk about that show we saw on TV the other night. You know the one. That Twilight Zone episode with the little boy who could read minds,” I stated.
Jason let out a breath of air. “Yeah… That one reminds me of my bio dad. It was like he could sense when I was upset with him for something,” Jason mumbled, “Sometimes I get that feeling around people. I feel like they can sense when I’m thinking something bad. Charley, I have to tell you this. I feel so guilty for it.”
That freaked me out. What could he have ever done to me? How bad was it? Why would he risk me getting mad to tell me? “Jay—.”
He grabbed the steering wheel and swerved on my side of the road scaring the shit out of me. “Jason, what the actual fuck, dude? You could’ve fucking—!” I looked up as a deer ran into the road. We would’ve hit it head-on or hit the car on Jason’s side of the road, but there was no way he could’ve seen it. His eyes were shut. I looked at the deer, and then I turned toward Jason who’d practically melted into the seat. He was in a full-body sweat, struggling to catch his breath as tears rolled down his cheeks. “How—?”
“It just happens now... I feel sick,” Jason mumbled. He opened his door and dry heaved a few times, but he didn’t throw up. I thought that was weird. He wiped his nose with his sleeve and cursed. “Charley, does your nose ever bleed when you do this?”
“Shit, no. Maybe we should turn back and take you to the hospital—.”
“No, you’ll get in trouble… And I can’t—. We can’t turn back. Stay with me,” Jason replied, “Please stay with me. I can keep you safe.”
“Jay, you’re sick—.”
“Don’t you ever leave my side while we’re here. When we’re close, I see clearly. I—.” Jason made a soft humming noise as he faded off into a dream. I should’ve been relieved, but I wasn’t. I drove until we reached the campgrounds, and Eddie met us near the road. He was with a horror movie star, a chick with dark hair, and some hippie stuck in the seventies. Jason was exhausted. I nudged him, and he held my hand to his chest.
“I still feel weird,” Jason whispered. I turned to him and smiled.
“You’ll be okay. Chill out and stick close to me,” I whispered, “Let’s say hi to Eddie… And try to stay cool.” I knew Jason wouldn’t want anyone to know he was baked.
Jason groaned as he let my hand go. “How long am I gonna feel like this?” Jason asked. To be honest, Jason sounded more normal high than he did on a regular day.
“How many cookies did you eat?” I asked.
“Four,” Jason answered.
“Don’t think about it too much. Come on, let’s go say hi to Eddie,” I replied.
**
After Eddie introduced us to his friends and we settled into the cabin, we went to the beach to chill, but I didn’t get in the water. Eddie ran kind of hot, so he got in the water and swam around. I brought my radio and played a few CDs. The sun came out, and it was a little warm for a minute. So, I took off my shirt and lay there with my sunglasses on. Jason sat on the other side of the radio, reading a book. “ Lemon Parade is seriously the greatest album of all time,” Eddie stated as he got out of the water.
“Definitely in my top five… For sure. I fucking love Tonic. What about you, Kid?” I asked.
“Nothing will ever top Dr. Feelgood . Mötley Crüe rules,” Jason replied. I couldn’t tell what he was looking at when he answered me, so I turned back to face the sky.
“Sick,” Eddie smiled as he dried off with a towel. “Gonna toke and knock out for a little bit. That Chester dude has some wicked ganja, and he’s not afraid to share.”
I chuckled. “Yeah, I bet. We’ll catch you later, Ed,” I replied.
“I’ll miss you, Eddie,” Jason replied. Jason looked sort of sick like he’d throw up soon. His bottom lip quivered, and he turned facing the caves.
I touched his arm. “Are you good?” I asked.
“I think it’s wearing off… I need you to do me a favor,” Jason whispered. And I’d never believe what happened next. Not in a million years.
“Whatever you need, Kid. I got you,” I offered. Boy, was I in for a shock.

Chapter Three: The Itch (Zatanna's POV)
"Put the knife down," the man in swim shorts raised his voice. I peeked around the corner, kicking myself for being neighborly. "We can talk about-."
"What is there to talk about? You all think I'm the Happy Harbor Butcher anyway!" the kid yelled. I took a breath and raised my book as I entered their cabin. The man shook his head, giving me away, and the kid whipped around.
"Oh crap! Hey, he's not in any danger. We were working on practical effects for my aunt-. See. The knife is fake," the kid explained as he pressed the trick knife into his palm. I let out a sigh of relief and hid my face with my book, and we all had a laugh.
The man approached me and rested a hand on my shoulder. "You okay?" he asked. "That must've really freaked you out. I'm Danny Cassidy, and this practical effects prodigy is my boss's nephew. He's the incomparable Eddie Bloomberg, the next big face of practical effects in horror." Eddie shook his head.
"Danny's the real genius... I'm just his humble apprentice," Eddie replied. I knew what he was up to. He figured all it took for me to fall head over heels for his friend, Danny, was a kind word or two.
Too late. I thought he was cute from the moment we locked eyes. I offered Danny my hand, and he took hold of it. "I'm Zatanna. My friends call me Zee," I whispered.
"Well, Zatanna... Are you spending the weekend up here too?" Danny questioned. I nodded. "Well, I hope you'll let me call you Zee by the time this weekend's over." He kissed my hand, and I flashed a smile at him.
"You guys up here for work?" I asked.
"Nuh-uh, I'm up here to meet friends," Eddie answered as he put the trick knife away. I set my book down on their table.
A tea kettle whistled, and Danny released my hand to go and turn it off. "Eddie invited me up with the promise of creative inspiration, but I think he just needed a ride. It doesn't hurt that we're making a movie about this place pretty soon," Danny replied, "But I'll be here, soaking in the beach scene... Maybe even check out the caves. What about you?"
"Call me crazy, but the place came to me in a dream... But it sounds like you guys are filming a nightmare," I whispered as it sunk in. They were filming a horror movie about the beach.
"It's just like any other beach... The movie's based on urban legend. Not backed up by fact at all," Danny reassured me.
I probably should've told him the truth. It wasn't a dream. It was a vision. Usually, I didn't travel to supernatural hotspots blindly like some ghost-chasing tourist, but anyone who could feel the magic there knew. Many people would be compelled to come there. My father called it an itch, but it was something different for me. It buzzed in my spirit as magic passed through my bones. I couldn't ignore the pull.
Danny offered me a cup of tea, and I accepted. He set a serving dish filled with tea bags at the table, and I made my pick. Eddie sat down and twisted a spoon in a jar of honey before dropping it into his mug. I grabbed a bag of berry hibiscus tea, which seemed like a step up from the chamomile at the cafes. I hated chamomile.
I shook the bag down and placed it in a mug. Eddie passed me a cup filled with spoons, and I gave myself a spoonful of honey for my drink, and Danny poured hot water from the kettle into our mugs before making his cup of tea. The warmth set my nerves at ease. "What do you do?" Danny asked.
"I'm a magician," I replied. I twirled the spoon around in my mug.
"Now I know where I've heard that name! You had a residency in Vegas," Danny replied. I bit my lip to conceal my smile.
"Yeah, have you seen my show?" I asked as I blew on my tea.
"Yeah, I saw your show three times. I've never seen anything like it," Danny replied.
I smiled a half-smile as I took a sip of my tea. "Thanks... Actually, I came over to see if you guys wanted to do a bonfire at the beach tonight? At seven-ish?" I whispered. The door slammed behind me, and I jumped.
A bizarre sensation shrouded the room, and I shut my eyes. I breathed through the feeling because I was much more sensitive than the others. At least I thought so. When I looked up, Danny and Eddie looked like they'd seen a ghost. Eddie stood up and left the room, and Danny took a sip of his tea and shook his head. "Gopher!" Danny called. "I'm sorry, this film is starting to get to us."
"No, I felt it too. I think it's just one of those days," I half-lied. Danny followed Eddie, and I was alone. I could hear them talking through the door, but I couldn't hear half of what they were saying.
I finished my tea and slipped away. I walked down the trail toward my bungalow, feeling something looming outside my vision. I rushed back to my cabin before a hand grabbed my wrist. I shrieked. The person released my hand. When I turned to see their face, I relaxed my shoulders and sighed.
"Jesus Christ, Chester," I whispered, "I didn't think you were coming."
"Yeah, I've been here for an hour wandering in circles looking for you," Chester replied, "Good thing I ran into you. Doesn't this place give you the creeps?"
"Don't tell me you're scared," I teased. Chester smiled.
"No way," Chester replied, "Just paranoid... Besides, you were the one that screamed bloody murder the second I caught up with you." I laughed with him. Nothing like getting the daylights scared out of me by a completely harmless friend to calm my nerves. That and a well-welcomed smoke on the beach.
Oh! I forgot to mention. I invited Chester. He was a friend of a friend's friend and a real sweetheart. That and I didn't want to be alone that weekend. "Hey, Zee? Got you a surprise from my garden," Chester smiled as he gave me a small box.
The box contained a small airtight container filled with weed. We went to my cabin and smoked for a while before I finally let it slip. "Who's the Happy Harbor Butcher?" I questioned. Chester turned to me on the couch, and we maintained eye contact for what felt like forever.
"Aww, no thanks, Kid. I'm out of here-."
"Chester, come on," I whispered. I grabbed his arm. "It was a simple question."
"I've got two rules for camping. No urban legends and no night hiking," Chester replied.
"Don't-. Don't leave. I won't ask about it again," I replied, "Do you want a soda or something?" Chester nodded, and I grabbed two from the fridge to keep him calm.
We should've left that day. I think I'll regret that forever. The pit in my stomach told me there was more to Happy Harbor Butcher than an urban legend, but the itch kept me there. I couldn't leave. Whatever energy drew me there kept me trapped by curiosity.

Chapter Nine: The First Blood (Laney's POV)
Kara wanted to take us on a family trip like the El family did in the old country. Mom and Dad were out of town with Jon, so it was my sister, my brothers, their partners, and me. My little brother, Chris’s girlfriend from the Kryptonian cultural club at his high school. They’re old-fashioned, cute high school sweethearts. Sugary-sweet and almost nauseatingly innocent. They’ve been friends since they were twelve, and this is their first real trip as more than friends. I was surprised her parents let her go, but our family was famous back home in Krypton.
Conner didn’t bring a date, but he did bring Roxy. She saved his life when he needed a kidney a few years ago. Now, Roxy’s our honorary sister. She also happens to be a cop. Or a cop in training. They whispered the whole car ride about something, but I couldn’t hear. It seemed like they were arguing.
Match came with his weird little blonde boyfriend. He came out to Mom and Dad last year, so we couldn’t judge his partners. Between you and me, I don’t think anyone would mind him dating boys if he didn’t pick such strange guys. Oh… His boyfriend’s name is Thad. And I know we call my brother Match or whatever, but his name is Max. Match is just a nickname. His boyfriend’s given name was Thaddeus. I’m not judging the guy, but he could’ve been more friendly when he met us.
Kara, Mia, and I didn’t bring anyone, which was nice. We took turns driving, but Roxy had to take over for good after sunset. She was the only one who could see in the dense darkness and the rain. The rest of us wore glasses. And in Thara and Chris’s case, they were too young to drive. Roxy wasn’t the safest driver, so I sat in the back with the kids, and they fell asleep on either side of me. I nearly nodded off before Roxy hit something with the station wagon. I heard a whine or a screech, and Conner gasped awake. “What happened?” I asked.
“Conner, I think I hit something—.”
“I’m Laney,” I answered. Oh, yeah. Match, Conner, and I are identical triplets. I don’t feel like we’re that identical. Conner always kept his hair curly and had earrings. Match is bulkier than both of us. And me… I almost lost complete sight in my left eye after a fight our sophomore year, so it was duller and weaker than my right one. “What’d you hit?” I was almost angry because it scared me awake.
“I don’t know. I’ll get out and see—.”
“It’s pitch black out there. I’ll get out and look,” Conner interrupted. I climbed from the backseat and followed Conner out. Conner covered his mouth and turned away.
“Don’t throw up,” I warned him. Conner was the most sensitive of the three of us. He cried at movies and lived for the sake of romance while being the coolest of us. But he was no help when it came to things like this. “Conner, look at me. Do not—.” Conner gagged. “Stop.”
“It’s still alive,” Conner whimpered.
I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Go get Match,” I replied. Conner obeyed. I was the oldest of the three of us. It was me, then Conner, and Match. Match was a surprise. Match got out of the car and gave me a pair of gloves. “What are—?”
Match put his gloves on and pointed toward the injured animal in the road. I followed him. When we approached the animal, a car stopped in the middle of the road and offered to help. “No, thanks! Can you get around?” I asked. He nodded and got in his car. “Come on, Match. We gotta move this dog out of the road—.”
“No… Coyote,” Match whispered. I took my pocket knife out and shut my eyes. I had to do it a few times before when we were kids. I didn’t like to talk about it. “Laney?”
“I’m okay. Let’s get it out of the road,” I commanded. We carried it to the side of the road, took off our gloves, and got in the car. Conner glanced at us and pressed his palms to his eyelids. “Don’t you dare throw up in this car.” I didn’t like vomit… Okay?
“Was it quick?” Conner asked.
“Yeah. Let’s go,” I answered. Roxy nodded and kept on the path to our cabin. Match and Thad got the master bedroom. The girls shared a room, and I shared a room with Conner and Chris. Our room had three beds, so we didn’t have to share one. I went straight to bed, but the thunderstorm woke me up. Actually… Chris woke me up. He shoved me awake. Chris didn’t mean to be rough. He was always unnaturally strong for a little kid.
“What’s the matter?” I whispered.
“Well—. Laney, can I—?” Chris jolted when lightning struck, and I nodded.
“Get in. It’s okay,” I replied, “It’s alright.” He lay his head on my shoulder, and I kissed his forehead. I wasn’t soft with anyone but him. “Hey, it’s okay. One-one-thousand… Two-one-thousand. Three-one-thousand. Four-one-thousand—.” Thunder and lightning. Chris turned toward me. “It’s alright. Lay down. I’ve got you.”
Chris scrunched down in the bed. It wasn’t until he closed his eyes that I realized… Conner wasn’t in his bed. “Chris? Christopher? Christopher, where’s Conner?” I asked.
“I don’t know… Conner was leaving when I woke up,” Chris whispered, “I thought he had to go to the bathroom or somethin’.”
“Alright… Well, I guess Conner will be back in a little while,” I replied, “Go on. Go to sleep.”
I lay awake, waiting for Conner. It was almost thirty minutes before Conner returned, soaking wet. “Conner? Conner, what the hell are you doing?” I asked. I was careful not to wake Chris.
“I don’t—.” Conner shivered, and I left the bed to look for a towel to wrap around him. “I don’t remember. Laney, don’t tell anyone, please.”
“I won’t… Go shower and put something warm on,” I commanded. There was a time when Conner was the confident one. I don’t know what happened to him, but I miss the bubbly person he used to be. He was still the same old Conner to everyone else, but they don’t know him like I do. It’s fake. Something changed when we were teenagers.
Oh! The sleepwalking. That was new. Conner started climbing out of bed in the middle of the night a few weeks before our trip. We lived together, so I knew his comings and goings. He didn’t want anyone to worry about him because the one thing you don’t want to be in a family with six kids is the kid with issues. To be fair, though… We were born with our fair share of problems.
No one thought we’d make it when we were born. We were misdiagnosed with a terminal illness, poked and prodded for years until a doctor found out what was wrong. It was rare but treatable… Which meant the years of painful tests and hospital stays were pointless. We came out of it okay, but there was permanent damage for all of us. It messed up my central nervous system, and sometimes I shake. I don’t know why, but I do. Conner’s kidneys were fucked… And Match. He died and came back. He had it the worst. When he was dead, he ended up with permanent brain damage. Or at least we think it’s permanent. Match had years of speech therapy before he could form sentences again… And even then, it’s no more than two or three words at a time. Anyway… I waited for Conner to return from his shower. I made him sleep beside me. I didn’t make a fuss because he was upset, but I insisted quietly. Conner wrapped his arms around my right arm. I wouldn’t have slept if he didn’t.

Chapter Eight: The Lighthouse Keepers (Orion's POV)
“They’re late,” Solis whispered. Lightning illuminated the room as Solis paced the length of our boarding house. I reached for him, grabbing his arm as he passed by. Thunderstorms always comforted me and offered Solis the same feelings, but this time of year was always different. Solis stared at me with large, curious eyes, studying me and hearing unspoken words. “It’s starting again. I can feel it.”
“Did you see the others?” I asked.
Solis nodded. He swallowed hard, feeling my eyes travel from his inquisitive stare to his neck. To his chest. His stomach. His-. Well…. Solis gulped. I was the only one who could render him speechless. We’d known each other so long that we didn’t need to speak. He reclined in my lap, reaching for my mask, and I grabbed his wrist. I turned away and held onto my pride. “You’re no monster, my friend,” Solis whispered.
I stroked his cheek with the back of my finger, along his neck, and to the buttons on his thermal. I unbuttoned the top two buttons before returning to his neck, hooking a finger in his shirt, and exposing his shoulder. His hair hung over his exposed shoulder. He wore his hair in a modern style, and I adored the change. I always liked his changes. His reinvention ignited new desires in me, and I let him know it every chance. It was the only way we could break through the monotony of life in the lighthouse. I stroked the line of his neck to his shoulder. “Orion,” Solis purred. I brushed my bottom lip against his neck, my mouth agape as I dragged my teeth against his soft skin. “Orion…”
“Let my name be adorned by your mouth again, beloved. Let your blood paint my lips… Let me savor your flesh, sweet as summertime cherries on my tongue,” I whispered as I reached for the fruit bowl on our coffee table. Solis reached past my hand and grabbed an orange, delicately peeling it between his teeth. He handed me a segment, and I crushed it over his neck and chest. I licked the juice from the base of my clenched fist and sucked the sweet orange from his soft peachy flesh. “Allow me the honor of this taste… And pray I don’t devour you whole.”
“Devour me if it pleases you,” Solis permissed.
I grinned, laughing against his bare throat. Solis tilted his head back, snickering as he placed a gentle hand on the back of my neck. “Orion,” Solis giggled.
Even after sucking the juice from his neck and chest, I felt an insatiable urge to taste his flesh. I saw flashes of our life together in the lightning. Years of longing. Clumsy hands, fumbling with flesh so foreign, yet so familiar. Hands that became experienced and knowledgeable with time. Lips that whispered and touched and smiled. Tongues that tasted… And bodies… Bodies that wrestled and writhed under the moonlit skies. Thunder shook the room as Solis straddled my lap. He fed me the remainder of the orange, sharing slices between his lips. “I’m afraid,” I whispered as Solis kissed me. I held his waist, hoping he’d settle. I wanted him to grow tired and rest in my arms, but he knew me well.
“I would not hurt you,” Solis reassured. His fingers danced against my neck. “My body grows impatient, Orion.”
He knew what to say. The beast within me could not hold back, and I did not subdue it. I could not deny myself the pleasure of my love. My hands worked quickly, ripping cloth away and exposing flesh. His or mine… It did not matter. We were one under the moonlight and in flashes of lightning. Solis nipped at my neck, allowing the gift of his sweet laughter to fill my ears. I could’ve torn into him and eaten him raw. Thunder rattled the shutters as his body consumed soft flesh. He took me in, surrounding my loins with warmth. Our love was quick, but Solis stopped me. “Slowly, my love… Let me see you,” Solis whispered. I pressed my masked forehead into his shoulder.
“It’d be an insult to your beauty… Allow me to ravish you like this,” I begged.
“Allow me to see the face I fell in love with. Give me everything, Orion, please,” Solis whimpered. I reached between us, capturing his engorgement in a gentle fist, gently stroking as he writhed beneath me. “Please, my love. Say yes.”
I nodded, and he removed my mask, holding my face in his soft hands. “Yes,” I grunted. “Yes, again. Yes.” He moaned beneath me, kissing me until his strength left his body. I lapped his flesh clean with my tongue as he trembled beneath me. I had an insatiable craving for the many tastes of Solis’s body. Salt and sweet. Sweat and juice and cum. I could not control myself. I bit him, and he cried out. Not in pain. He laughed, begging me to do so again. I wanted to leave my mark on every inch of his body, devouring him until I found myself in a state of arousal so intense that fire would’ve felt like cool water on my skin. His skin was so soft and tender. Every inch of it. Perfect. I worshiped Solis with my tongue, from his softest parts to his thighs. Firm and warm. Then his knees. I did not care. I wanted all of him. He was light and love and heaven itself beneath my mouth. I came on his leg before taking his heel in one hand and calf in the other. I sucked him clean, leaving small bruises they called hickies. Every part of him carried a taste more intoxicating than wine. I made myself drunk on his sweat and lay exhausted atop his warm body.
Solis laughed at me, rustling a hand through my hair. “I’m honored to be treasured by someone so wonderful,” Solis whispered, “Orion… My Orion. Sweet Orion.” I kissed his cheek and nestled my face between his neck and shoulder.
“Your warmth is unlike any other… Let me stay here. Let me live and die here in your embrace. This is my oath to you: Let us never separate,” I whispered.
“We shall never part… This, I swear,” Solis promised me, “But we must prepare for our guests… Together." His eyes, once so alert and piercing, were now glazed over as a sweet smile spread across his tired face. He watched me with those eyes. Admiring a face I despised.
"If it starts-. When it starts, you should sleep in your private chamber-."
"No," Solis replied. He rustled a hand through my hair. "Lust is ravenous. It devours to the bone… But love-. Our love is safe. Do not forget you saved me… It's not the other way around. Remember that." I fixed my mask onto my face, and he frowned.
"They will not see me as you do. All that matters is how I look in your eyes," I reassured Solis. Still… We both knew no one could ever fear me more than I feared myself.

Chapter Seven: The Hitchers (Rol Purtha's POV)
I held onto a piece of wood from the wreckage, drifting toward a light in the distance. I retched as the ice-cold Atlantic waters surrounded me. As I neared the light, it flashed over me, warming my body. The stars fell from the sky and danced around me like a fairy light menagerie. Then, I saw the source of the flashing light, spinning slowly, brighter than sunlight itself, only appearing to disappear. The lighthouse. And finally, something hitched my shirt in the water, pulling me under. I didn’t fight. I was paralyzed by fear and exhaustion, unable to struggle against the force.
I woke up dripping wet with perspiration… As I’d done for the past twelve nights. I shook violently as the ambient noise of my fan returned to my ears despite the violent ba-booming of my heart. I didn’t know how to make it stop until I saw the lighthouse on a postcard. Long story short, I took a ferry and the bus to get to a place of nightmares. I had no choice. I don’t think the nightmares would’ve stopped had I stayed away.
The ferry was almost vacant, save for two girls who seemed like sisters sitting on opposite sides. I sat behind the less intimidating of the two, and she sat on her feet and turned to face me. “Happy Harbor?” she questioned as she offered me a cookie. I respectfully declined her offer.
“Uh-huh,” I answered, “I’m gonna set up camp near the lighthouse.” I patted my rucksack.
“I wanted to rent a cabin, but I think they’re all booked for the weekend, so I’m camping out that way,” she replied. She extended a hand to me. “I’m Laura. Laura Fell.”
“Roland Purtha. My friends call me Rolly or Rol,” I replied. I shook her hand.
“Maybe I can set up camp nearby… Unless you’re doing a soul-searching thing,” Laura suggested. I shook my head.
“It’ll be nice to have the company… Your sister setting up camp, too?” I asked, gesturing toward the other girl on the ferry.
“Oh… No, we’re not sisters. I actually haven’t met her yet… Hey! What’s your name? Are you going to Happy Harbor, too?” Laura asked loudly. The other girl turned toward us.
“Yeah, I’m writing about the crap that went down there in my zine,” she replied as she walked toward us and handed us a copy of a handmade blood-splatter-designed zine on deliberately dogged and chewed-up paper. It was laminated with a matte finish. The inside pages were thin, rough, and as chewed-up as its exterior. Un-glossed. Some pages were black with white lettering, some were white with black lettering, and others used magazine letters instead of handwriting or typed words. She wrote horror stories. Murder stories. Ghost stories.
“This is a horror zine,” Laura noted.
“Mhm. Call me Black Alice or Alice. Horror enthusiast,” she introduced herself.
“What happened on the harbor? Was it at the lighthouse?” I asked. I sounded more urgent than I wanted to. Alice’s eyes widened.
“That’s the thing. A massive amount of people disappear from the harbor every few decades. In the seventies, a camp cook chopped up a bunch of teenagers. Each one bled dry before they were dismembered. He was found dead, holding his son’s silver cross in one burned hand… His suicide note contained only one sentence: I am not a monster. In the forties, families built neighborhoods there. In one single night, all the adults drowned. None of the children remembered the events of that night, but they all said the last thing they remembered was a song lulling them to sleep. All separate homes… But the same lullaby-.”
“Yikes,” Laura whispered.
“Anything about the lighthouse?” I asked.
“Um… Let me check,” Alice whispered. She pulled a journal out of her bag and read through the most recent pages. It was eerily silent for several minutes. “Mhm… Actually, that’s probably the safest spot you can be at. That’s where they always find the survivors. In the seventies, they found a handful of kids holed up in the lighthouse… Scratch marks on the door, but no one could get in.”
“These would make for killer campfire stories,” Laura whispered, “Alice, do you have a cabin, or are you camping out like us? My tent has enough room for two, and Rol said I could set up camp by him.”
“Oh, we never told you our names. I’m Rol Purtha, and this is Laura Fell,” I introduced us. We shook her hands. They were cold, but not shockingly so.
“I’m setting camp, and it’d be great if you guys were nearby. I’m not gonna lie and say I don’t believe something awful is coming,” Alice confessed. I should’ve been scared, but I wasn’t. Something about the lighthouse frightened me more than the stories. I fell asleep sometime after that.
I dreamt of the water, but things were different. I sat in a rowboat as I washed up gently on the shore. The sky was a deep, reddish purple. It was warm, so I stuck my hand in the water. It was shockingly hot. I pulled my hand up, wrapping it in my sweater. I glanced down and gasped at the wet crimson as it soaked straight through the knitted cotton fabric of my cardigan. I fell out of the boat and woke up struggling for air. "Rol?" Laura whispered. She looked green around the gills. "Your nose is gushing blood."
Alice took a napkin from her bag, and I held it to my nose. “Thank you… That’s not-. This is embarrassing. I’ve been having these nightmares-.”
“Do you mind if I interview you about your nightmares after we set up camp?” Alice interrupted. I shook my head. I desperately wanted to explain my nightmares to someone, but it wouldn’t have made logical sense. Alice seemed like she’d look beyond logic if she noticed a pattern.
The ferry docked, and we got off and took the bus as far as it would take us. My nose had stopped bleeding, and I unfolded the map in my pocket. “How many miles are we from the beach?” Alice asked, adjusting the brim of her hat to hide her face.
“Eight miles-.”
“Let’s hitch it,” Alice suggested.
“Cool,” Laura smiled.
I wanted to argue with them, but eight miles seemed far. Alice stuck out her thumb as we walked along the side of the road, and a truck pulled over. “Headed to Happy Harbor?” the man yelled out the window. We nodded. “You three should be able to fit in the back.” We nodded and sat in the rear-facing seats. When we sat down, a little girl turned around and greeted us.
“Be careful,” she warned as she pointed to Laura. The man nudged the little girl. “You should put your seatbelt on.”
Laura edged closer to me, and we touched hands. Hers were ice cold. She recoiled and scooted closer to Alice. Alice stared at me with concern for my safety. The man drove for a short while and stopped at a grocery store. We all got out and picked up food for the trip. I bought a cooler and ice to hold the meat for breakfast. "I'll cook if you guys want," I offered.
I felt a tug at the bottom of my shirt. “Hey, Mister?” the little girl whispered.
“You can call me Rolly. What’s your name?” I asked. I took a knee, and she shook my hand.
“Helen… Rolly, don’t be afraid of the lighthouse,” Helen whispered. My breath caught as I looked at her serious little expression. “We’re taking the tour. Right, Uncle Hal?”
The man looked up from his magazine and grinned at her before frowning at something outside. “That’s right, Helen… And we better get going, because it looks like a storm’s coming,” Hal whispered, “Come on. Round up your friends, okay?”
I obeyed and we paid for our things, but the rain started soon after we got in the car. It poured and the roads were barely visible in the downpour. Hal didn’t seem concerned, though. He drove calmly through the storm while Helen fiddled with the radio. As we neared the campsite, Hal hit his brakes hard, and we collided with something. Everyone gasped and Hal got out of the car. I unbuckled my seatbelt and followed him. “I hit a coyote… He came out of nowhere!” Hal shouted. And that was the last thing I remember.

Chapter Four: The Figure in the Dark (Guy's POV)
Kyle was a sweet guy, but he could be an airhead sometimes. We had to stop twice because Kyle forgot his first aid kit, road trip lunch, and palette. So, we went to a store outside town where he spent half an hour flirting with the counter girl. I had to practically drag him away. It bugged me sometimes, but I wouldn't want to vacation with anyone else. He'd been through a lot in the past year, and I wanted to give him a nice weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city. That, and I thought he'd want to see the lighthouse there. He liked stuff like that. We got to our cabin at sundown, and Kyle insisted on investigating a light he saw in the distance when we passed the beach. I grabbed a flashlight, and he grabbed a pack of franks on the way out the door. "Why are you taking our weenies to approach the ominous light on the beach?" I whispered.
"Don't call them weenies, Guy," Kyle mumbled as he shook his head in disgust. "And... I think I see a mini skirt in the distance-."
"Is that all you think about?" I interrupted. "You ever heard of Fatal Attraction, Kid?"
Kyle chuckled and ran ahead of me. I followed close behind and flashed a light on a few people standing around a bonfire on the beach. "Sorry, can't hear you over the babes, the beers, and the bonfire. Oh my! Does anybody like hotdogs?" Kyle questioned.
A guy came around with roasting sticks, and I admitted defeat. I roasted weenies and cracked open a beer. I glanced up at the stars from a beach chair. Kyle plopped down next to me, his skin touching mine. Cold. He'd been cold since I met him. "You okay?" I asked. Kyle shivered and nodded.
I grabbed a blanket off the back of the chair and draped it over him, and he insisted on sharing the blanket with me. "It's okay. This is a gay beach," Kyle whispered.
"A what? Kyle, that's not a thing," I replied, "Besides, we aren't a couple."
"Yeah, but if it's a gay beach, it doesn't matter if it looks gay. I'm cold, and you're warm, and I wanna share this blanket with you," Kyle explained.
"Kyle, you do things that seem gay all the time. I thought you were gay for the longest," I confessed.
"Name one gay thing I've done," Kyle commanded. He wasn't going to let it go. Maybe I should've kept my mouth shut.
"You once described one of your male friends as divine art in motion while admitting that you'd date him if you were a woman," I answered. Kyle opened his mouth to protest, but he knew I was right. "Most of your friendships seem homoerotic, but I don't mind. You care about people, and you shouldn't change that for anybody. And it's the nineties. Being in touch with your emotions is cool now."
"I forgot you never lie about anything," Kyle replied as he took my beer. He took a sip and glanced upward. "You know the constellations. Right? You used to teach them to the kids."
"Tonight, we have Delphinus. Delphinus is the dolphin Poseidon sent to fetch Amphitrite in the myth," I described. Kyle poked his lip out and nodded.
"And you just know that? Like, you can look and tell?" Kyle asked. I nodded. "That's so cool."
"Thanks," I replied, "It's never gotten me laid." Kyle's eyes widened, and he looked at me for a response. "I'm serious."
He laughed and bit his lip. "That implies you've tried it on someone before," Kyle chuckled.
"I have," I replied.
"Listen, if it makes you feel better, I'll fool around with you for sharing your astronomy knowledge," Kyle teased. I spit out my beer. "Top of the clothes action only... Unless you take me somewhere nice first."
"I did take you somewhere nice. There's a lighthouse out this way and everything," I replied. Kyle laid his head on my shoulder.
We sat on the beach for an hour before returning to our cabin in the dark. I let Kyle use the shower first while I made something to eat. Real food. Not hotdogs. Kyle came out in time to eat with me and offered to wash the dishes for me after. I nodded and took my shower before heading off to bed.
Then, the strangest thing happened. It started to rain. No. Not rain. It stormed. Thunder, lightning, hail. The whole shebang. Kyle knocked on my room door, and I let him in. "I'm not scared," Kyle whispered. Then thunder boomed so loud it shook the cabin, and he damn near jumped into my arms.
"Scared of a little thunderstorm?" I teased.
"No! I'm not scared... I wanted to check on you," Kyle lied, "And since you're obviously terrified, I insist on sleeping in here tonight to protect you from this completely harmless storm."
Kyle jumped into my bed, and I smiled, shaking my head as I joined him. Lightning flashed, and he hid under the covers. "Sitting on a mattress is one of the safest things to do during a thunderstorm," I whispered before turning on my side.
Lightning flashed, thunder rumbled, and I swore I saw something standing outside in the rain. I flipped over lightning fast and knocked foreheads with Kyle. "Jesus!" Kyle cried out as he clutched his forehead.
"Did you-. Did you see that?" I asked.
"You conking me with your big ass head? No! No, I didn't see that," Kyle snapped as he rubbed circles in the center of his forehead.
"Sorry... But did you see the guy outside? Or maybe it was a chick... I dunno," I whispered as I made eye contact with him. I was scared to look at anything else.
Kyle sat up, and lightning flashed again. He ducked down and grabbed my hand. "Well? Did you see them?" I asked.
"I don't remember," Kyle whispered. We didn't say anything after that. I think we were both scared shitless. Kyle fell asleep after that, but I couldn't shake the feeling of wanting to cut and run. Kyle tossed and turned, whimpering and moaning as if something hurt.
"Kyle... Kyle, wake up," I whispered.
He opened his eyes, and when he saw me, he shoved his face into the pillow and started sobbing. "I know I'm no Mr. Universe, but-. Jeez, Kid..." I sat up and rubbed his back. I knew he had a lot of traumatic stuff happen to him over the years, but I had no idea he was so messed up.
Kyle cried until he fell asleep, and it was forgotten. I would've fixed everything broken in him if I could've. Kyle was a good person. He might've been a flirt and an airhead, but he was compassionate, forgiving, and one of my best buds. He slept like a baby after that, and the rain eventually stopped.
