I know that this would probably never happen, but I feel like Jeff would be really supportive of Hobie.
Most fics I see it's always them disliking one another for "obvious reasons" (Hobie being a punk, him hating the police etc)
But i really don't think that this would happen.
Personally i think that Hobie would be scared off Jeff. Of what he could do to miles if he were to misbehave. What he could do when Hobie couldn't be by his side to protect him.
Meanwhile Jeff sees a lot of Aaron in him.
He sees a scared, hungry, homeless kid and just wants to help him.
He knows himself how corrupt the police is and he understands his anger and fear.

Rio and Jefferson pulled the most wholesome “This boy did not just bring home a white girl” I’ve ever seen in a movie pertaining to an interracial romance that included a white woman/girl. Because they’re absolutely kind and respectful to Gwen, but they were not expecting a white girl. I cackled at Rio’s “I bet she doesn’t speak Spanish.” Like MA’AM.
I know a significant part of it was them learning to let Miles go and accepting he’s growing up, but another part was they genuinely didn’t expect him bringing home a white girl. That definitely caught them off guard because they didn’t see that coming at all. I love their reactions to it bc it’s similar to how my parents responded to my brother’s white gf.
“Oh, she just said my first name.” Yeah, felt that on an instinctual level. Grew up in the South, Mr. and Mrs. always came first, but this isn’t a race thing because Ganke does the same thing, which neither Rio or Jefferson appreciate. Feel this is just a generational gap sort of thing.
A tidbit about Miles. I really, really appreciate the film including his lowkey attraction to Margo Kess. Gwen and Miles are my preferred ship, but this was a nice touch where you saw Miles and Margo vibe with each other, albeit briefly. There were some sparks. In his escape, Margo hesitated when she could’ve stopped Miles and eventually turns on Miguel, realizing that while his motives may be noble, his methods are not.
There are other small, subtle nuanced concerning race and depiction of race that I genuinely respect the film for depicting so seamlessly. When Rio corrected the guidance counselor on her immigration status, “I’m from Puerto Rico. I’m from here.” But she slowly accepts the line if it means helping Miles’ succeed.
Also the contrast between Miles and 42-Miles hairstyles. That is so POIGNANT to me. Miles is such an open, caring boy and his hair reflects that bountiful spirit he has. It’s thick and open and free. 42-Miles has been damaged by the world so extensively that he’s closed off emotionally and his hair, tight, coiled braids, reflect the coldness he lives in and has become.

Another reason (among very, very many) that Spiderverse is so special to me is the very real relationships between parent and child.
Gonna focus on Miles + Jeff here, their relationship is so dear to me because it's so, so real. Jeff wants the absolute best for Miles, he wants to see him grow and thrive and reach his potential, because he knows he's special, smart and such a good kid. He's so desperate to have Miles grow up to be the best he can be, and as a sister with a p big age gap to my younger brother, it's just so real. That push for them to succeed, because you know, you're sure, more sure than you have been and ever will be with anything else, that they can. They have every ability to be the best.
And the pitfall of this, that Jeff, that parents, that older siblings, so often fall into is that you know that they can be anything they wanted to be, and sometimes who they want to be is not what you know they can be. And it's not disappointment, not really, not when you could never truly be disappointed, but at the same time it's impossible to let go of that desperation to give them everything they need to be the best they can. You'll do everything in your power to remove any obstacles they could face, you remember what struggles you faced and hope to God, do anything you can, to make sure they never face the same things, you guide them, support them, try hide them from the shitty ways you've been treated, hide them from the shitty side of the world. But 'best' isn't a metric anybody can live by, and the bad of the world isn't something you can wash away from sheer force of will, so you try to prepare them for this, try to give every ounce of strength you have in your body in the hopes that they'll be strong enough to not just survive, but thrive. (And deep down you have no doubt that they'll manage, but it hurts either way that there's no way to hide them from this).
This is what Jeff's character means. Means trying and trying and getting into disagreements with Miles over this. You watch in real time as he comes to understand that, for a child, this sheer defensiveness and these hopes and dreams can be stifling.
Sometimes love is in the letting go, even when every cell in your body doesn't want to, even when you only want the best, because a child needs to be free to thrive. Even if it hurts.
Jeff is so dear to me, having been a Miles, and in learning what it's like to be a Jeff.

Not that I thought Miles was ever wrong but the more I think about it the more his desperation to save his dad in Across and absolute refusal to stand back and let him die makes perfect sense for his character development.
Cause on the one hand yeah obviously that’s his dad and they may butt heads but Miles still loves him more than anything and no way is he gonna let some petty argument with his father be the last time they ever interact.
But also, I think it’s his trauma from the first movie talking. Cause think about it, his dad is his last male positive male role model left.
The very first one, Uncle Aaron, he lost in a very traumatic way at a very young age, right in front of him.
Tumblr media
And then his world’s Peter Parker, once again, right in front of him
Tumblr media
And both times he was young and inexperienced and he couldn’t do anything to save them. But this time, he’s older and he’s learned the ropes. He’s more than capable now. So over his dead body is he gonna stand back and let someone he loves die a third time.

Miles, about to come out: would you still love me if I was a spider?
Rio, thinking of an real spider: of course. I would have to go through exposure therapy first, but you are my little Boy and nothing would change that.
Jeff, already planning the logistics: Yeah, I'd build you the fanciest terrarium! I'd even call spiderman to be able to talk to you.
Miles, about to cry: I am spiderman

I know we all love the scene where Rio and Jefferson find out that Miles got a B in Spanish, but I was just rewatching that scene and how come I never noticed when the administrator says that Miles has an A in AP studio art that Jefferson imminently says "He takes after his Uncle."
Like that is one of the sweetest things I've ever heard and just the slight bittersweetness on his face and in his voice.
I just don't understand how I missed that the first time!?

I usually hate the "Parents dislike their child's love interest" trope but Spiderverse mamaged to pull it off. I think it helped that because Miles was already hiding things from them, they were suspicious of Gwen since they never met her before. So it had less to do with them disliking Gwen because of her being someone that Miles was interested in and more so just another thing Miles was hiding from them. The interaction was also legit funny rather than being painful to sit through
