pjo/hoo @/amusement park headcanons
idk i thought of this forever ago and it's been sitting in my notes forever, so here
piper throws up on a rollercoaster
percy cannot, for the LIFE of him, win annabeth a prize.
"let me show you how it's done, seaweed brain." she calculates how to throw and wins him a tiny stuffed trident.
rachel has to quickly pull grover away from his feast in the trash cans before someone sees
leo & calypso fix a broken-down ride
jason tries to convince thalia to do the bungee jump dive w him--she offers up piper instead but ends up doing it anyway
(she may or may not nearly strike percy w a lighting bolt)
hazel helps a little girl find her lost earrings and frank is basically in love
everyone realizes they "lost" percy & annabeth at the water park ;)
jason was sent to find them and boy--HE DEFINITELY FOUND THEM
frank accidently gives archery lessons
jokes about grover becoming the amusement park janitor
hazel kinda wishes nico were there but she knows he wouldn't have had fun
rachel & calypso befriend each other
piper gets a piggyback ride from leo & vice versa, as well
frank & grover are "guests" in a hypnosis performance
thalia finds this too amusing and takes pictures for the hunters to enjoy
percy & annabeth stroll around themselves for a while just being cute <33
jason mentions smth about nico being gay to piper (an aside, just a short snippet):
annabeth was trying to sneak up on piper w her yankees cap but now she stumbles back to percy by the restrooms and almost cries laughing.
"all this time we thought he had a crush on me, but it was you!"
percy is so mortified
calypso slaps percy when she first sees him (they were all kinda nervous about them meeting again, esp annabeth even tho she knew not to worry; if your bf can turn down a roman praetor for you w/o even fully remembering you, then you should be fine) but then she thanks him for leaving. he's not her happy ending, and she isn't his.
honestly, he was most shocked to see her wearing jeans
leo somehow catches a water ride on fire??
jason & percy volunteer to be in a sword fighting demonstration--somehow none of the mortal audience notices they discarded the prop swords they were given
piper & annabeth are slightly worried they're going to kill each other
calypso guarantees them this a "rather healthy" confrontation
"of course, verbal communication is the best way, but guys think differently."
grover has a picture of juniper in his wallet. rachel finds this incredibly sweet
leo jokingly volunteers to give grover's goatee a trim
no one appreciates the pun.
grover declines.
hazel almost uses golden drachmas as payment for her lunch and frank just can't help but laugh at her
jason & piper fly around the park
the aerial tramway is for chumps
piper fangirls very much upon seeing percy & annabeth's seat--midair snuggling and forehead kisses
jason calls down to thalia to be calm
she's gripping the ride so tightly
she wasn't even supposed to be IN the cart bc it's only fit for two people but rachel & grover pulled her into it
leo's super fuckn fascinated when learning to braid calypso's hair
he tries to copy piper's braids, but she has to inform him it's complicated due to her uneven hairstyle
thalia, rachel, grover, percy, & annabeth all eat lunch together and it's so comfortable.
thalia had never fully met rachel but now she's just crying from how rachel blatantly broke up w percy w/o even dating him

Could you write something about jasper x reader where he’s jealous of how close she is with Emmitt and he eventually snaps and they fight over her ?
𝕵𝖆𝖘𝖕𝖊𝖗 𝕳𝖆𝖑𝖊
Reader loves jasper rpmantically, and loves emmett platonically. emmett's like a brother
Jasper watches you from the other side of the room, sat so peacefully with a book in your hands. A single finger card through the pages, finding the text to turn. And yet, before it could fully begin the moment was shattered once again.
A pillow crashes itself into your face and your book is sufficiently gripped in Emmett's hand and held above his head. The only noise to leave you as a small squeal of surprise from the impact before you erupt into boisterous laughter. "Emmett you doof! Gimme back the book" you laugh, indulging him with a pitifully human jab to the chest.
The amber of jasper eyes darkens into a more hazel brown as his irritation grows, watching you two play fight and laugh once again. Rosalie huffs with a small smile from her seat, genuinely amused by your antics. Jasper isn't. It only takes him half a minute to snap, a bellowing "enough!" ripping it's way out of his throat before he can even think. Moreover, he's ended up in a precarious situation with his hand around Emmett's throat.
Your book hits the floor.
Pin drop silence.
One beat passes, and then another until he looks at your face. Your mouth slightly agape, eyes wider than before, but more noticeable your heartbeat is racing. Jasper doesn't need his gift to know that he just scared you, though startled would be a better fit as a work.
"C'mon now Jas, we're done now" You happen to be the first to speak, ignoring how Rosalie appears at your side and takes her lovers face when your Jasper drops him. "Take me home?" Your voice is smooth, steady, and has a calming effect on him. He doesn't speak when you step away, he know to meet you at his car.
The drive back is silent on his behalf, more so than usual. But you seem to have no trouble keeping the atmosphere alive and filling it with chatter like always. It's only when he pulls up and parks that you take a minute to be quiet.
"...Hey Jas?" you dont wait for a response before you continue. "It's okay to be jealous, but i need you to let me know. I figured that i'm gonna marry you one day, and so i may as well get on with your family too. I love Emmett as a brother, you know that baby, right?"
Fiddling with his hand in yours, you watch as he sighs in acceptance and a small smile makes its way to his face. "I know." He lifts your hand to his lips and presses a gentle kiss to the back.
"So you're gonna marry me one day, darlin'?"

Some of my PJO ships & why
Percabeth (Percy/Annabeth - They invented love)
Ruegard (Clarisse/Silena - THE LAST OLYMPIAN, THE PARALLELS, PLS)
Clarisse/Chris (*I do not know their ship name, my bad - The Labyrinth, need I say more?)
Silena/Beckendorf (*Idk if they ever had an official ship name - They were so tragic)
Clarisse/Beckendorf/Silena/Chris (Polycule, bc multishipper really)
Jake Mason/Michael Yew (I have a thousand reasons and I don't think any are canon)
Conchell (Connor/Mitchell - THE FANFICS PLS, but some of them need to remember these are minors pls)
Connor x Malcolm Pace (I saw really cute ship art 1 time and I was sold)
Connor/Mitchell/Malcolm (I think they'd be really cute together and I don't care if it's impractical)
Luke/Lee Fletcher (Lukelee - Honestly, its more of a crack ship for me, but some people on Tumblr have me considering how much)
Luke/Ethan Nakamura (Lukethan - I can't be alone in this, pls)
Theyna (Thalia/Reyna - They would make an awesome QPR, and I thought this even before Reyna was revealed to be aroace. They flirt endlessly if only to enjoy the confused looks on their friends faces)
Tratie (Travis/Katie Gardner - Is there anyone who read the books in the 2010s when the fandom was like super big that doesn't ship them? It's big now, but like, still.)
Tyson/Ella (They deserve the world)
Solangelo (Nico/Will - Tbf, I shipped them since The Last Olympian AS A CRACK SHIP, but A WIN IS A WIN)
Grover/Juniper (Just yes)
Sally/Paul (The King that our Queen Sally Jackson deserves)
Shelper (Shel/Piper - The plot twist I didn't know I needed)
Valgrace (Leo/Jason - When I read The Lost Hero, I just thought "these two idiots could definitely work well together.")
Jasper (Jason/Piper - It isn't my favorite, but I think they're cute together. I hate that their relationship was built on the Gods interference, because neither of them deserved that. I would probably like it more if it didn't start because of Hera.)
Ethabaster (Ethan Nakamura/Alabaster Torrington - The fandom is the reason I ship them mainly tbh. I ship Ethan with Luke more, but Ethan honestly deserves better)
Jercy (Jason/Percy - I have read a single Jercy fanfiction and its kind of growing on me)
Cecil/Lou Ellen (They are literally the idiots in love that annoy Will until he gets with Nico {personal hc}, Love them)
Sherman/Miranda (I didn't think I would like this as much as I do, but its in so many fics I've read I'm low-key a little attached. Like, yeah Sherman show off, get your girl)
Damien/Chiara (I couldn't see them with anyone else tbh, but honestly could possibly change that one day, they will always hold my heart as #1 together though)
Frazel (Frank/Hazel - They are one of the sweetest pairings in the series)
Jason/Percy/Annabeth/Piper (Yes, another poly ship. I've seen this in a few fics and honestly, I think the way its written has grown on me.)
Castor/Will (Literally, because of a single fanfic. They were probably each other's first crushes and didn't even know it)

Silent Cosmos (Edward Cullen) (Ch. 3)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Edward Cullen x GN! Mute!Reader
Words: 2.8k+
Warning(s): Two gross dudes, sexual verbal harassment (not towards reader), swearing,
A/N: omg chapter 3 is finally here. I apologize for the wait. I thought my semester this time around would be forgiving but NOPE. I had so much to do and read, I could hardly write for fun or draw either. I hadn't realized how long it had been since I last posted. I want to try a new method when writing series. I tried with my kpop writing blog, and its where I write a few chapters at a time then periodically post them. Helps keep the flow and motivation going, but that may have been a one off there.
Series Masterlist
-------
"O star of strength! I see thee stand And smile upon my pain; Thou beckonest with thy mailèd hand, And I am strong again... The Star of the unconquered will, He rises in my breast, Serene, and resolute, and still, And calm, and self-possessed. -- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, "The Light of Stars"
-------
Edward hasn't been in school for the past few days.
You admittedly felt a little lonely without his presence, though Emmett and Alice have made it their mission to become your new best friends. Jasper tried but he still kept his distance from you, which you didn't mind. Rosalie helped when no other Cullen was around, although she kept a lot of conversations at a minimum, which you also didn't mind.
Alice had told you Edward had gotten a bad cold, so he is staying home. You had offered to bring him your notes the first time so he could copy them down, but Alice told you their father has him basically on lock down until he is deemed healthy. So, after you've done your homework, you've been making copies of your notes to give him when he comes back.
It's the start of a new day and once again, Edward wasn't there. You were at your locker with 15 minutes to spare. You placed the spare folder with Edward's notes on the shelf while your mind went back to that moment you two shared at the welcoming party for your uncle. You felt happy telling him all the stars and constellation you could see, and even happier when he seemed thoroughly interested in your rambles. However, you feel an inkling of guilt when you remember he gave you his jacket. Maybe he got sick from that?
"Dude, I got this weird spot on my dick."
Well, there goes your musings of guilt. You glance to your left and see two guys near you, just chilling against the lockers. You've never met them, though you do remember sharing a class or two with them separately.
"Are you really airing your business out when someone is standing right their?" The shorter one, with dirty blonde hair and hazel eyes gestures to you.
"Relax, Mark. That's the deaf student." The taller one with deep brown eyes and brown hair says with a laugh. You suppress the urge to roll your eyes and choose to just focus on the inside of your locker. Maybe you should get more decorations- "Anyways, I have this weird spot on my dick. It almost looks like I have a weird mole there. I'm hoping it's just a new mole and Cindy didn't give me something."
Gross.
"I'd get that shit checked out then. You don't want it to turn into something worse if it is an STD." Mark says with a sigh. "I told you not to sleep with her, Tony. She made my balls itch like crazy. They still fucking itch."
"I think its just a weird mole. You wanna look?" He cackles while his friend fake gags. They both push off the lockers and walk away to who knows where.
You let out a deep sigh and close your locker. At least the ignorance of other allows you to hear some gossip.
"What's with the sigh, Tiny?" Emmett calls out as he and Rosalie approach you. He has very quickly taken to the nickname Tiny for you. You suppose anyone shorter than him would be considered tiny in his eyes. Rosalie simply opened her locker as you and Emmett conversed.
"Oh, just overheard two people talking about something that should have been a private conversation." You respond with a slight shrug.
"Gah, Forks High is full of a bunch of weirdos, huh?" He grins and raises his brows a few times, crossing his arms while leaning on the locker next to you. You silently chuckle and nod, though you wondered if there was an underlying joke there.
"No Edward today?"
"Nope. Carlisle still hasn't cleared him." He sighs with a sympathetic smile. "Between you and me, Tiny, Edward is still shitting his brains out." He signed that last portion to you.
You gave him a scandalized look and playfully slapped his arm with a small chuckle. You were surprised to feel just how hard his muscles were.
"What was that for?" He gripped where you slapped and pretended to be hurt. "It was a private conversation, no one else here except Rosalie knows sign."
You roll your eyes and shake your head with a smile. You could always count on Emmett to get you to smile.
"C'mon, Rose and I will walk you to first period, like always." He grins and gestures you to follow him. Rose simply came along since she and Em were in the class next to yours. You nod and follow, happy to have good company.
---
It was a passing period and it was just you and Rose at your lockers. You grabbed a new pen and pencil since the last two you had broke and ran out of ink. Rosalie was fluffing up her already perfect, blond hair in the mirror of her locker. She and you didn't converse much, but you still liked her presence. Like the rest of the Cullens, she didn't tiptoe around you or treated you differently. She acknowledged your presence and would answer you if you had questions.
You were about finished in your locker when you heard two familiar voices keep up their gross conversations behind you.
"Dude, Rosalie has the hottest ass." Tony practically jeers, his voice intentionally loud. You glance to the blond next to you and she still keeps fixing her hair, though you can see her brows are a little more furrowed and her lips are more in the shape of a frown.
"Her tits, man, her tits are where it's at." Replies Mark and when you shift just enough to see him in the corner of your eyes, you see him make an obscene gesture.
You hear the slight creek of metal and when you look to Rose, you see her grip is so tight on her locker door that her fingers made indents which made your eyes widen for a moment. She closes her locker and you can see by her side profile she is pissed, and rightfully so.
So, you do what you think would make her laugh at the expense of those two guys.
You tap her arm to get her attention and she looks at you with a glare. You don't let it faze you. If those two are going to be gross about your friend, you'll just air out their business that they so willingly aired out by you this morning.
"You know those two jackasses?" You intentionally look to them as you sign and look back at her. "Well the brown haired one has a spot on his penis that he isn't sure if it's a mole or an STD. And his buddy likely doesn't wash right since he's had prolonged itchy balls."
Rosalie looks almost scandalized until her eyes widen for a moment as she looks at the two dudes and then back to you. She covers her mouth as she laughs when she realizes what you're trying to do.
You were about to sign some more when the two dumbasses approach.
"I know you were talking shit. What the fuck did you sign?" Tony glared, pointing an accusatory finger at you. He gets in your face and you swear you hear Rosalie growl.
You swallow thickly and decide to open your mouth. Your aunt always said you got your stubbornness from your mom.
"I said..." You try not to wince at the pain in your throat, your voice sounding hoarse. "You had a weird spot on your dick and your friend... has itchy balls." They looked at you with wide, horrified looks. "Don't talk about someone's body if you don't want yours talked about either."
"You little shit." Mark hisses and Rose steps closer to your side, an arm just barely in front of yours.
"What's going on here?" Emmetts voice grows louder as he approaches, his usual, carefree smile no longer on his face. He looked scarier than you've ever seen him. Mark and Tony looked at each other before slinking off.
Once they were gone you let out a dry, painful cough. You cover your mouth with the back of your hand and quickly grab your water and drink, soothing your throat. You could taste a tiny bit of iron in the back of your throat as you drank.
Rosalie calls your name softly. "Are you okay?"
You nod in response and take another sip of water. You didn't catch the look they gave each other or Rose gesturing for Emmett to speak.
"What happened, Tiny?" He asks in a quiet tone. You close the cap of your bottle and place it back in your bag. Your throat still ached but you knew the pain from using your larynx will linger.
You start to sign to him everything that occurred, from what you overheard in the morning to him approaching. You can see a flash of anger on his face but he goes back to that small smile. Once you explained your words to Rose and why you said them, a huge grin breaks out on his face.
"I didn't know you had it in you, Tiny." He laughs and pats your shoulder a little too firmly.
"Come, I'll walk you to class." Rosalie said with a soft tone. You nod and wave goodbye  to Emmett. You both start heading down the hallway, the blond next to you tense.
When you got to your class a pale hand stopped you. You look to Rose with a questioning look while her gold eyes avoid yours.
"I just wanted to say thank you for earlier." Rosalie says, the tense look she had fades into a small smile, her eyes meeting yours. You see some vulnerability in her usually guarded gaze. She gives your shoulder a squeeze before dropping her hand. "You didn't have to do that. I'm... admittedly used to that."
"No need to thank me, Rosalie." You smile back at her.
"I do, because not many would step up like that." She softly sighs and her smile grows a bit. You felt her words had more meaning to them, but you decided to not linger on them for now. "I know I've been slightly avoiding you but I have a hard time trusting hu- new people. But, after today, I think I want to open up a bit and be friends."
"I'd like that too." You beam. "Alice has been begging me to do a shopping trip, maybe the three of us can plan a trip soon."
"I'd... I'd like that." She almost looks like she is relieved and less guarded.
"Is your hand okay?"
"What?"
"Well, I saw you grip your locker and you dented it."
"Oh. Yeah, it's fine. I work on cars and my grip is strong. It's nothing." She holds out her hands and you saw just flawless skin. "Well, I will see you soon. Class is starting."
"Talk to you later." You wave and go to class. You sit down at your usual spot and start preparing. You sigh, irritated at the way those two spoke about Rose so loudly. But you also felt happy you and Rose were close now. Her bending the locker was suspicious... there were many things off with the Cullens that you've picked up, however, you don't linger on it. They have their quirks much like you have your own.
---
Edward lounged on the couch reading, back from his trip up to the Denali clan to clear his head. After witnessing that nightmare from you, he needed a moment alone to sort his thoughts. He wasn't sure what he felt afterwards but once he took some time to sort out his thoughts, he came back to Forks. None of the others knew what happened. He didn't tell them those details of your life, as none of them were privy to it. He wasn't either but that bridge has been crossed thanks to his ability and curiosity of the galaxy protecting your mind.
He felt guilt initially when he realized he deeply invaded your privacy. Then, despair and immense sadness followed when he recalls back to your nightmare, your past. Edward had seen many horrors in his long life, he even committed some when he'd hunt those men. However when he witnessed what you went through, he couldn't help feel a spark of protectiveness. You were nice. He found you a joy to be around despite it not being long since you transferred. He doesn't want anything bad to happen to you.
Edward couldn't help but smile when he thought back to you and him outside the fire station. It was a peaceful moment. He couldn't help but linger on the sight of you in his jacket, pointing out the stars and constellations. It was silent other than your internal thoughts. And when he got to witness your galaxy so at peace? He also felt a sense of tranquility he longs for.
Edward quickly put those thoughts away and resumed his attention his book when he heard his adoptive siblings come in. Alice and Jasper pass without saying to him, which he was slightly thankful for. However, Emmett and Rosalie lingered by him.
"How can I help you both?" Edward sighs, snapping the book closed as he looks at both of them.
Rose crosses her arms. "You need to come back tomorrow."
"Why? Did something happen?"
"Yeah, Tiny happened." Emmett grinned and gestured to Rosalie. The blond sighed and let the memory replay of you standing up for her so Edward can see what happened today. He furrows his brows, setting his book down. He stands up from the couch and looks between the two.
"My guess is those two will probably retaliate against our friend one way or another." Rosalie says softly. Edward chooses not to point out how she said 'our friend.' "You spend the most time with them, they'll need you to stick around them the most."
Edward nods slowly. He recognizes Mark and Tony, and he knows they each have a class with him and you. He's heard the thoughts that spew from them both like garbage and he knows they aren't above getting back at someone.
"I'll come back tomorrow." He confirms. He wanted one more day to himself, but tomorrow is good as ever to face you again. He knows how you lost your voice and how you ended up living with your uncle and aunt now, but you don't know he knows. And he'll have to keep that in mind.
Although, Edward couldn't help but smile at the sound of your voice in Rosalie's memory. It was rough and hoarse, and it caused you pain, pain he doesn't want you feeling again... but it was nice hearing that voice that matches to the one in your head... when that space of yours is dropped.
---
You make your way to your locker first thing in the morning. You get yourself situated, grabbing the things you need for your classes before lunch. You set aside the folder where you kept your copies of notes for Edward down on the small shelf. You huff softly, throat still feeling sore from using your voice.
A familiar voice calling your name has you spinning around quickly, a smile instantly growing on your face. Edward approaches you with a small smile, looking the same as he did the last time you saw him.
"Glad to see you're feeling better." You grin, your mind flashing back to what Emmett signed to you in regards to Edward's health. You catch your friend's eyebrow twitch, a flash of annoyance on his face that he quickly recovered.
A Cullen quirk, you muse to yourself.
"Yeah. I'm doing a lot better now." He replies softly, standing  a little closer to you than usual.
"I have something for you." You see his eyebrow quirk as you turn back to your locker. You pull out the black folder and hand him it. "Notes for the classes we share."
Edward stares down at the folder before chuckling. He looks up at you and gives you brilliant smile, one that makes your heart flutter for just a moment. "Thank you, I really appreciate it."
"Of course."
Suddenly, you feel hand on your back. Edward was standing much closer to you with an expression akin to a scowl as he stares off a little. He looks to you and smiles softly, though you can still see the tension on his face.
"We should get to the classroom. I'll probably have questions about what I missed." He says in a low voice. You nod, a little confused by his demeanor. You finish up with your locker and let him guide through the hallway, his cold hand still resting on the middle of your back.
You weren't aware of Tony's and Mark's presences until you both were walking by them to your first period classroom. You paid them no mind, keeping your focus ahead of you. Doing this, however, has you missing the deep and threatening glare from Edward towards the both of them.
As you both walked through the hallway, Edward felt that his non-existent blood boiling at the degrading, violent, and nasty thoughts those two were thinking. He knew they both weren't the best that Forks has to offer, their thoughts sometimes louder than others.
That protective urge he felt after witnessing your nightmare? It's working overtime now and he isn't completely sure why.
What Edward does know that he won't let them try anything towards you.

Who I write for /Rules
Masterlist
I'm new-ish to writing (i used to write fanfiction when i was like 13. i'm 19 now and write very rarely) but I really wanna do it again.
So this is a list of characters/fandoms I write for as well as some rules for asks. Some things may be missing from this list so if you dont see something on this list, feel free to ask. :))
Do add as much detail as you want to a request and please ALWAYS have at least some sort of prompt, as i'm really not good with coming up with storys on my own yet.
I WILL NOT DO SMUT SO DONT REQUEST IT! I might however do spicy stuff (Nothing more than making out or somewhat implied stuff tho).
My writing will be mostly pg 13 but please still be careful if the fic-warnings include sensitive topics, and i might repost some 18+ things so be careful when navigating my blog.
Please be nice and have manners when requesting.
Also please include what gender/pronouns you want the reader to have (i write for all genders). If its not included I will default it as gender neutral. :)))
I also write poly relationships and AUs.
Some things I will not write include: Pregnancy, toxic/yandere, student x teacher, love triangles.
(Also english isnt my first language, and even though, in my opinion, i speak it really well, if they are any mistakes, thats why.)

Note
From the first moment I laid eyes upon him, I decided I liked him. That was saying something, because I don’t much like anyone. I can’t afford to like or trust anyone. Not anymore.
He slunk in one morning, head down, eyes x-raying the floor, shoulders tense and overall trying to look like he didn’t exist. I saw him appear in the doorway and quickly slip into the armchair Magda pointed out to him. He didn’t look around or make a noise or speak. He just sat there, as straight as he could in the sagging cushions of the blue and white striped armchair. He clasped his hands together tightly and placed them carefully on his lap, the thumbs facing the ceiling. A moment later his hands unclasped and one hand flew to his mouth where he began gnawing on a fingernail. Then, as though realising the full extent of his habit, he removed his fingers from his mouth and reclasped his hands back in his lap. Then he began to twiddle his thumbs instead. My eyes drifted away from the distracting hands and to his face. God, he was young. Too young to be in a place like this. He must be pretty fucked up. His face was pale, like it had been cast in moonlight. I twisted my head to check his eyes. His face may have looked like moonlight, but there were definitely no stars in his eyes. They were hazel, I could tell. I couldn’t see. But I didn’t need to see. I just knew. He had the whole ‘poor baby’ thing going too, but, to his credit, he wasn’t exploiting it. On my first days I would’ve killed to have the “poor little victim baby” thing going.
A shout of laughter rippled through the room and he jumped. Scared, he cautiously looked up only to find everyone fixated on the stupid television. He took a quick glance around the room, assuming everyone was watching the television. I wasn’t. I was still watching him. I focused on his lips now. Straightaway I could tell that those lips had touched another person and was disappointed. But there was no love on his face. There were no remnants of who had kissed him in his eyes or mouth or soul. He had hidden the memory of them inside of him and that distinctly annoyed me. If people hide things, then they have to actually look to find them. It’s okay if you lose them, or misplace them, or put them somewhere else, you can still stumble across them. Just like your first kiss. If it was a good memory, don’t try and hide it somewhere – just put it somewhere. If you hide it, you’ll never just stumble across it. But, if you forget it or misplace it, you never know when it might come back. You never know when it’ll pop up in your subconscious and give you a nice surprise. But if it’s a bad kiss, you try to forget and lose the memory so you’ll never stumble across it again. It’s quite sad actually when people forget to lose a memory and are haunted by it for the rest of their lives. But the brain is not just like a filing system, or a big tunnel with two exits saying ‘keep’ or ‘chuck’. You can’t physically file your memories; you don’t actually get to decide which ones you lose for good or which ones you simply misplace. I’m the only one who knows this, so, naturally, I know how to do it. If I’m really bored and Jasper is not here I sort through the week’s memories and file them, but a lot of the time I just let them go, it’s no big deal once you’ve cracked the secret. Though I bet if anyone else did it would be groundbreaking. Imagine being able to lose memories of a tragic childhood incidence or forget all the deaths you’ve witnessed. Think of how much a doctor or an ambulance officer would give to be able to forget things like that.
So, that’s how all memories work. Don’t ask me how I know – I just know. And now you know, so if I hear of a groundbreaking new study about memories I’ll know. I’ll even understand if you don’t credit me. After all, I’m just a teenage kid and that doesn’t give me much credibility, does it?
Back to the new kid. He’s taken up staring at the TV now, instead of his lap. I hate that TV! Doesn’t anyone realise how easily that box kills your brain cells? Annoyed, I ground my teeth together so hard Ben turned around.
“That’s not a good idea now, is it?” he said in his annoyingly calm, orderly way.
I purposely rolled my eyes and ceased the grinding. I don’t want to be here. I hated TV time. They think that we’re all so interested in who gets voted off American Idol. Who cares? Half of them can’t sing anyway. My money’s on the chick, and I don’t even watch the show. She’s gonna win though, I knew it. I shuffled in my armchair so my back is resting against one padded arm and my legs are propped over the other. Another ripple of laughter courses the room and I glanced at the television, wondering what was so funny about American Idol. Only, it’s not Idol that on but some crap TV sitcom. Holy shit! Quick! I need something to gouge my eyes out with and deafen myself with before too much of this stupidity seeps into my brain. Somebody must’ve changed the channel because now that I think about it, I don’t recall the sounds of American Idol at all this session. I must be slipping. How could I let such a little observation slip past me? Oh yeah, it was the arrival of that new kid. The one with messy, once-styled black hair. I could still smell the gel he used to use in it. Yeah, of course he’s washed it since he came here, but, like I said, I know stuff. And I know he used to gel his hair.
There is a quiet click but to my ears it is so loud because I have been awaiting it all day. The TV is off! Hallelujah!
“Lunchtime!” said Magda in an overly cheery voice, beaming at us all.
I moaned and purposely took my time unhooking my legs from the arms of the chair. I desperately hoped Ben didn't decide to wait for me. However, he’s not waiting for me but instead for the new little black haired kid who was sitting trying to look as inconspicuous as possible in his armchair. He offered a hand to the kid to pull him out of the chair. The black-haired kid learnt the hard way how difficult it is to extract yourself from the cushions of that particular chair. It swallows you in; sucks your arse in the base of the chair. I chuckled as he gripped the arm and tried to haul himself out.
“Here, let me help. Can I touch your arm?” Ben asked carefully, his hand still extended and quite close to the boy’s.
The little victim shook his head violently and retracted his hands, terrified, clutching them close into his body, staring up at Ben like he was threatening him. Ben holds up his hands hastily, indicating no contest.
I raised an eyebrow to myself and passed Ben on my way to the door. I paused, my back facing the two and shook my head slowly. I turned back around to face them both, smirking.
“What are you smirking at, Gerard?” Ben snapped, watching the kid and looking defeated.
I raised a finger to indicate patience then began to slowly undo the tie around my neck. Slowly, systematically, and carefully I undid it, preferring to reverse every step rather than loosen it. I took it off my neck and dangled it in front of the kid’s chair. He’s watching me with such intense scrutiny I’m quite affronted. If I was mocking him, he would know, and would not have to resort to attempting to read me. He finally decided my intentions were pure, or whatever; he just finally took the loop of the tie I held out to him. In one swift motion I hauled him out onto his feet. He staggered for a bit but I didn’t move to steady him. He didn’t want anyone to touch him. I had to respect that. If he fell and cracked his head, I wouldn’t touch him. If it was against his wishes to be touched, then I wouldn’t do it. It wasn’t that hard to comprehend.
Once out of the chair he was steadily going bright red. I let go of the tie and it fell, slack, in his hands. He bundled it up and held it out to me. I shook my head and made my way to lunch; I was hungry, after all.
I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE IM GOING TO SMASH YOUR DANGER DAYS CD ALSO KILL YOURSELF

thoughts on toa
ok so everyone is doing this so imma do it too.
So when I first started reading toast I was like "lesters funny but he's kinda a drama king and thats annoying me a lil" but then,,, like- he started realizing "oH. I FUCKED UP A LIL AS A GOD" and once he started realizing that and acting on the idea that he needed to start being better, hE ACTUALLY BECAME SUCH A GOOD CHARACTER (not that he wasn't already but yk)
So like it kinda when like this
The hidden Oracle: Lester starts as a drama king and I didn't rlly like him too much at first. Like I would literally cringe every paragraph bc he was still in the "im a God and I'm better than u mortals" mindset which is probably why he annoyed me at first. But then he started realizing stuff like, "oh ya maybe that was my fault" example, Daphne and hyacinth. And then also realizing that everyone didn't love him, they just didn't disrespect him bc he could have smited them when he was a god
The dark prophecy: I liked this one a lot actually. Bc meg came back and it showed how much Lester loved her (as a sister) and also had Lester realize that he was kinda petty as a god and that he could have helped a lot more people. AND,,, THERE WAS A OLD LESBIAN COUPLE WHICH I LOVE (I can't remember their names T^T) NOT TO MENTION LEO CAME BACK!!! and the hunters of Artemis, I love them sm.
Burning maze: ...so- I already had spoilers for this one so everytime Callugulas (?) Or Jason's name came out I started tearing up thinking abt what was gonna happen. And Lester sacrificing himself was everything. Literally I was terrified but at the Sam time iT SHOWED SO MUCH GROWTH!!! But honestly I'm glad Jasper broke up bc it was so forced- AND GROVER!!! I LITERALLY SQUEALED WHEN GROVER SHOWED UP!!! and I love all of the dryads sm. And loved coach hedge as well. But honestly it was a rlly good read!! I mean in my opinion Rick is better at first person than 3rd tbh. And Piper slayed. I love her.
The tyrants tomb: ok, I'mma just be honest here, I cried the most during this book. Between Lester almost dying, all of the mentions of Jason, all of the minor characters that died, and everything else, my eyes literally stung by the time I finished reading- BUT DONS DEATH HAD ME BAWLING. I LITERALLY WAS CRYING MY EYES OUT. AND DAKOTA DIED TOO!! I LOVED HIS CHARACTER!!! oh and Artemis and Apollos reunion was SOOO sweet (yes I cried when that happened too). And frazel <33 AND OH MY GODS DON'T GET ME STARTED ON REYNA!!! I LOVED HER BEFORE TTT BUT SHE JUST GOT BETTER!!! I love her sm. And hazel as well!!! AND OH MY GODS (AGAIN) LAVINA!!! MY LIL PINK HAIRED LESBIAN! I LIVE FOR HER CHARACTER! and lavina x poison oak forever bc I love them. But Don 😭 I literally died inside when he died. And oh Hades, meg and her armed unicorns- that was everything- and Apollo seeing how his actions hurt other people like the silent god and the voice in the jar (I'm terrible at names sorry) was such a character arch as well.
Tower of Nero: I'm just gonna say it,the solangelo in this book gave me life. They were so CUTE. and the ....hat creatures (i can't spell their name) were hilarious ngl. AND RACHEL SAW THE BROOKLYN HOUSE AND ONE OF FELIX'S PENGUINS- I LITERALLY STARTED LAUGHING SO HARD DURING THAT SCENE- oh my gods and don't get me started on how much the python and Apollo scene scared me. I was like holy shit Apollos gonna die! Dues flash, he didn't but yk- and meg and Apollo were the best. AND LOU!!! OH MY GODS I LOVED HER!! and I feel bad for all of neros adopted kids :( but Apollo after he became a god again literally shocked me so much- like- he forgave his father!! That shocked me so so much but I was so proud of him 😭
Anyways overall, I loved this series so much. The characters were amazing, the plot was amazing, Apollos character arch was wonderfully written- and I just loved it.

~
A month passed swiftly, and Mia settled into her new life with a gracious heart. She knew just how wrong everything could have gone and how blessed she was that it hadn't. The reality was, her blessing was so great, it was almost too good to be true, and for the first week at Ashwood Farm - the name of her grandparents' home - she woke every morning, opened her eyes to the wood and dab ceiling, and sighed in relief because it wasn't a dream.
Once, a very long time ago, the farm ran sheep, but in the last few generations, the MacAlasdairs had moved into acquiring business holdings instead. Still, there were a few horses, a flock of ducks and geese, and a coup of chickens along with Jasper and Eddie - the pair of farm dogs, a golden retriever and a border collie. They were very friendly, and every day, when Mia walked the border fence of stone, they went along with her.
The dogs belonged to Henry, who looked after the animals and grounds. According to Cora, he was in his early forties and a confirmed bachelor. A little gruff around the edges, he wore his beard scruffy and a knit cap pulled low, taming his head of copper curls. He had the physique of a man used to hard labour, and if Mia hadn't recently come out of a disaster of a relationship, his deep voice and fit body might have given her pause, but as it was, she felt little in the way of attraction though the man was good looking. Hazel eyes watched her whenever Mia crouched to pet the dogs or stopped to stroke the horses' soft noses.
He'd introduced himself that first day with almost an annoyed growl, stared hard at the bruises around her eye, then turned on his heel with a command to follow him when Mia asked about her grandfather's woodworking shop.
She expected him to lead her to a quaint little shed, not a miniature stone cabin with big, bright windows. It had a great pot belly stove in the corner, long work benches, shelves, and miles of storage. Though it was currently covered in dust and wood chips, half the cottage seemed dedicated to a lounge area where her grandfather likely sat to read, drink, or spend time with friends in his 'mancave.'
The idea of it made her giggle, and Henry cast her a curious glance, before telling her he could assist in cleaning out the space if she wanted to take it over.
Mia thanked him but ultimately declined. Her grandad's half-finished pieces would remain, though she would put them up on display, and until she knew what to do with them, his tools and extra pieces of wood could be packed up and placed in a corner out of the way.
Within a few days, she had her studio set up between her grandfather's work benches and his sitting room. The long tables would give her a drying area, while the space in the middle had the best light.
Once she was all set and working again, Cora visited under the pretense of bringing her tea - they both knew she was snooping - but Mia didn't mind. But when Cora gasped and gushed over Mia's paintings, exclaiming at what she was seeing, Mia blushed.
She knew they were good, having sold many at craft fairs and gained a few commissions from people she met, but the validation was nice.
Mia painted portraits on mirrors sourced from auctions, thrift stores, yard sales, pretty much anywhere she could buy a decent piece of glass or a pretty frame. She called them Reflections for the care that went into the work, and it was a multi-step process to create.
First, the outline of the portrait was marked, and the underside of the picture was painted. For commissions, she liked to talk with the person about their goals, hobbies, great loves, and the things that filled their soul. Those things were painted on the mirror, but backward, like window painters who created the outline first so the image could be properly seen from the outside.
One had to peek behind the paint to see the inner reflection.
Then, on a second piece of glass, cut to fit the mirror perfectly, she painted the portrait of the individual. She kept them as photo-realistic as possible but did so with bright colours. A portrait could be blue and pink and yellow, orange or green; it really depended on how she felt at the time of the painting or the requests made by the customer.
Then, the pieces were sandwiched together, creating a double effect. One had to look closely to see the inner understanding of a person's soul in the reflection.
It had taken years for Mia to perfect her craft, and she still had to make sure she sourced the correct kind of mirror to give her the depth she needed. She would need to find new suppliers now that she was in Scotland, but there was an auto shop in town that did windshield repair, and upon finding out who she was, the owner appeared happy to deal with her.
Now, a month in, she knew quite a few villagers by name thanks to the shopping trips with Cora, who gleefully introduced her around.
It seemed Cora made bread, pies, and other amazing pastries for the farmers market that took place monthly. Much of the fruit and veg came from the gardens and orchards around the house. When Cora asked if she would still be alright with that, offering the same deal - fifteen percent of her earnings for using the kitchen and harvesting Mia's land - Mia agreed but knocked the price down to ten percent. Cora argued that fifteen was perfectly fair and refused to pay a penny less. Sighing, Mia relented but asked if Cora would mind her tagging along to the market.
This was when Cora somehow convinced Mia to open a booth with her artwork beside Cora's.
And thus, on a blustery May day, Mia - the proud owner of a new pop-up awning - was finishing setting up beside Cora.
They left up two walls on each tent to keep out the wind but kept the ones at the front and between their booths open, just in case Cora got busy and needed a second set of hands.
Mia displayed what she could do around her booth, on tables and hanging from quickly sourced Amazon finds. Some paintings were full-sized in gilt frames, propped on easels, or hanging from hastily erected wire. Smaller paintings, those the size of regular printer paper, sat in cardboard boxes like old records waiting to be flipped through. And still more, pendants Mia painted with hyper-realistic flowers under glass hung from little stands.
Henry hadn't seemed too keen on helping, but Cora browbeat him into packing the truck and getting them to the town square in Kelso early in the morning.
It had been a long time since Mia exhibited, and though she was excited, she was also nervous. Most people now knew she was a MacAlasdair. Would they think she was cheeky for attempting to sell her art at a decent price when she didn't need the money?
Her fears were unwarranted when people began to trickle by. Soon, Cora was doing a hopping business, and Mia was busy talking about what she did and why.
Throughout the morning, she found three people interested in commissions and eagerly handed out hastily made-up business cards.
She just finished up with a woman wondering if she could do something similar to commemorate the loss of her husband's best sheepdog - to which Mia gave an enthusiastic yes, she would love to paint a dog - when Cora called her name.
Friendly smile plastered on, she turned to find a stunning brunette, two young boys - their faces sticky from something sweet and chocolatey - and a tall, strapping man.
"Mia, ye've not met the Hiddlestons of Highpark Castle. This is Emma Bruce, her lads Keegan and Calvin, and Kristopher Hiddleston."
She crossed to stand behind Cora's baked goods covered table and held out her hand to the woman. "It's a pleasure. I see your home every day on my walk."
Emma grinned, her blue eyes bright and sparkling. "I've heard so much about you already! The whole village is buzzing regarding our new Canadian transplant. How are you adjusting?"
Mia laughed and shook the firm grip, smiling at the boys. "Just fine for the most part. There's been a bit of culture shock and a steep learning curve, but I'm figuring it out." She leaned closer and stage whispered, "But if you happen to have a Scot's saying dictionary, I would like to borrow it."
"Ock! Yer fine. Ye always blink like an owl when ye dinnae ken something," Cora huffed.
Emma laughed and winked. "Try being married to one. The brogue gets thick, and even I struggle."
"I did wonder," Mia chuckled, her accent very posh English.
"That's what happens when a Scottish keep ends up in the hands of an English Lord," the man laughed, holding out his hand. "It's a pleasure, Mia. Please, call me Kip. Everyone does. And I must say, I adore what you're doing here."
Hand firmly caught in his, Mia allowed him to tug her back into her booth, where he oozed charm and cooed over her work.
"I would love to have one of these for my fiancée. She would adore it!" he proclaimed, causing Mia to frown.
"Fiancée?" she murmured, glancing at Emma.
Kip snickered. "She's my sister."
"Oh!" Mia blushed. Emma said she was married to a Scot, and Kip was the upper crust side of an English accent, but she and Kip looked nothing alike beyond the bright blue of their eyes.
Emma was short with a petite, curvy frame and dark hair. Kip was tall and fit, more like a runner than a lumberjack. His sandy blond hair had a touch of copper, but not enough to call it strawberry, just enough to make it shine with red lights, even with the grey and cloudy sky hiding the sun.
"Don't trouble yourself, love," he winked, his smile flashing straight white teeth.
"Ignore him, Mia," Emma quipped. "He's just annoyed you're not fawning all over him."
Mia frowned. "Why would I?"
"Ugh! I'm destroyed. My heart will never be the same," the man pouted as Emma's boys laughed.
They looked about seven and ten and immediately made fun of their uncle.
"Looks like your fame hasn't spread to Canada, Uncle Kip!" Keegan snickered.
"Yeah, guess you have to try harder," Calvin giggled.
Kip huffed and playfully locked both boys in headlocks. "Bah! Perhaps Mia doesn't like movies, television, or theatre?"
"I like movies," Mia muttered, still perplexed. "I also like TV."
The boys burst out laughing. "See! Not that famous!"
Kip pouted. "Mia, darling, come on! Throw a man a bone. The Essex Serpent? Crimson Peak? Kong: Skull Island? For pity's sake, woman! Thor Ragnarok?"
"Ragnarok?" Mia tilted her head. "You were in Ragnarok?"
Kip raised his hands, triumphant. "Yes! I played Loki."
She blinked, arched a brow, and scowled. "Oh, you're that guy."
"I beg your pardon?"
Mia sighed and thrust a hand through her hair, muttering, "Odin's one eye," before forcing a smile. "Look, no offence, but I prefer the other guy."
Emma squeaked and slapped a hand over her mouth, but her eyes danced with utter delight.
"Other guy?" Kip asked, crossing his arms.
"Yes, the one in the first two Thor movies and Avengers. I'm not great with actor names, which is probably why I didn't recognize yours, but I never understood why they replaced the other guy. He made an incredible Loki. I was impressed." As was the God he portrayed, though her Loki was still annoyed about the hair. "I thought he put real passion into the role and gave him such depth of emotion. Nothing was more powerful than when he confronted Odin about being a Frost Giant. The utter hurt and betrayal gave me goosebumps. And in Avengers, when he was fighting Thor on the tower, and that single tear trickled down his cheek at sentiment." Mia shook her head. "Magic."
Kip stared, mouth agape, while Emma beamed, and the boys giggled like they had a secret.
"What? I know I can get a little passionate-"
"Tom!" Emma squealed. "It was Tom! Our brother Tom played Loki in the first three movies."
Heat burned through Mia's face. Talk about fawning like an idiot. And to his family, no less.
"Gods, I'm so embarrassed," she groaned, slapping a hand to her forehead.
"No, no, darling," Kip chuckled. "I agree. Tom was a better Loki than me. Would that he could have continued excelling as an actor."
"Unfortunately, our parents passed away unexpectedly," Emma murmured sadly. "The estate and responsibilities fell on Tom as the heir. He gave it all up to come home and take over as Lord of Highpark."
"And allowed me to rise under my own star," Kip smiled gently. "Had he stayed in the industry, I know many of the roles I've won would never have come my way. He put me forth to replace him in many of the parts earmarked for him, and when Ragnarok came up, it was because of our near-identical looks and voice that I was granted that opportunity as well. I owe my brother quite a lot," he murmured, staring at her curiously.
Suspicion caused Mia to squint at him. "What?"
"Hm? Oh, nothing. Nothing. Now, back to my commission."
He began talking about his fiancée, going on about how they just had a baby and how she was an actress rising on the Hollywood stage. He spoke about how they met doing Broadway and thought she would adore Mia's work.
With her birthday coming soon, he wanted to surprise her with something unique and special, and Mia's art was right up that alley.
Mia nodded along, making notes on her phone as they went, jotting down everything from the size he desired to her favourite colours to little tidbits Kip doled out about how great of a mom she was and how happy they were together.
The love fest gave Mia a pang in her chest, but she didn't let her smile waver.
Mia handed him a business card and asked him to email her so she could send him her contract and questionnaire. She informed him her commissions were first come, first served, and if he didn't want to wait for his painting to act soon as she already had a few interested parties.
Kip snorted, pulled out his phone, and shot off an email as she stood watching, amused.
Mia's phone pinged. She pulled it from her pocket, read the subject line, and burst out laughing. "Do me first? You're lucky I enjoy a quirky sense of humour."
"I thought you might," Kip snickered, tucking her business card away with his phone before the boys tugged at his hands. "Speak soon, Mia!"
She chuckled along with Cora and Emma as the obviously bored children dragged him away.
"It was a pleasure, Mia. Come by the house one day. We'll have tea. I'd love to get to know you better," Emma smiled. "Any time, any day. I'm usually free."
"I'd like that," Mia agreed. "I'll let you know when Kip's portrait is finished. We can kill two birds."
"Lovely," Emma nodded, giving a little wave as she headed off. "I should rescue Kip before the boys convince him more ice cream before lunch is a good idea."
"Bye!" Mia waved, watching them go.
"So…"
She turned to face a smirking Cora and arched a brow. "What?"
"Familiar with our Tom, are ye?"
Mia's face burned, and she hurriedly turned away. "Stuff it, old woman."
Cora cackled and went to speak with a customer.
~
In a lull around mid-afternoon, Mia escaped her booth to walk around. Cora assured her she would hand out cards to anyone interested, and said she'd heard Mia's spiel enough times to give the speech herself if necessary but would call her to come back if someone wanted to speak with her.
Mia walked the market with genuine interest, happily stopping to sample what she could where she could or stop and talk to the fibre artists, potters, and wood carvers when they weren't busy with other customers.
She wound up the proud new owner of three gorgeous wool sweaters, a cute purple toque - though she confused the poor woman when she called the knit cap that - and matching mittens. She bought a pair of heavy mugs in a black glaze speckled with white and shot through with smears of colour. They looked like galaxies on clay, and she had to own them. And when she stopped at the wood carvers tent, a bowl of ebony wood with a high polish caught her eye, as did a matching carved raven.
Mia headed back to her booth with her treasures in tow and belly full of samples.
Cora chuckled when she saw her. "I told ye to take a few bags."
"I did!" Mia laughed, tucking her finds under a table out of the way. "I ran out of room. There are just so many talented artisans here. Between the food, the drink, and the art, this could be a dangerous place to come to more than once a month."
Cora chuckled, but her laughter died on a gruff, "Canna help ye?"
Mia rose and turned to see a man in his mid-thirties, with brown hair and eyes, his long black coat twisting around his legs in the wind. He was staring at her, his face a mask of unreadable granite.
Something about him gave Mia the willies.
"Ye want something, Benedict Campell?" Cora snapped.
The man cast her a disdain-filled glance before returning his focus to Mia.
"I came to meet our new resident," the man said, his accent thick.
"Nice to meet you," Mia nodded, even as Cora snorted.
A squint came to his eyes as he studied her before he stepped into Mia's booth. "Yer younger than I thought."
Mia frowned. "Thank you?"
"Braw, too." He took another step toward her.
Mia pressed backward. The man sent chills up her spine.
The quorking of a raven gave her courage, and she straightened her spine. She'd worked in customer service and dealt with worse creeps before. "Is there something you want, sir?"
He arched a brow, amusement curling his lips into a cruel smile. "I was hoping ye would sell Ashwood Farm to me."
Mia crossed her arms and lifted her chin. "Nope."
The other brow joined the first in his hairline. "Surely yer not staying in Kelso?"
"I am, I can, and I will."
"Ye've had yer answer, Campbell. Aff wit ye!" Cora demanded, stepping between them, her brogue thickening.
He sneered at Cora before glaring at Mia. "Think about it. I'll give ye a great price."
Mia snorted. "Gods, no. Please leave."
"Yer makin'-"
Mia stepped around Cora and into the man so aggressively he stepped back in surprise, and she walked him backwards out of her booth.
"My sign is No. My number is No. My answer is No. You need to let it go! Bye-bye now!" Yes, she did just quote a Megan Trainer song. No, she didn't regret it.
Mia wiggled her fingers, cocked her head, and sashayed back into the tent.
"This isn't over."
"Yep. It is. There's nothing that will make me sell the last link I have to my heritage and family, so please, kindly fuck off," Mia smiled sweetly. "Attempt to harass me in any way, and I'll set my lawyers on your mangy ass."
Campbell scowled and stalked off.
"Ock, now ye've done it," Cora snickered.
"Done what?" Mia asked.
"That's Benedict Campbell. He's a high-mucky muck property developer. He's been after Ashwood Farm for years, but yer grandad always told him to feck off, too. So good on ye, but ye may want to give Fergus a call and let him know Campbell's up to his shenanigans again. Fergus had to cease and desist his arse once already."
"I'll do that," Mia murmured, glaring after the asshole.
"Just ken, his da is Kelso's mayor."
Mia sighed and rolled her eyes. "Joy."
"Not to worry. You own the building the mayor's office resides in."
The utter glee Cora took in that fact made Mia laugh. "Well, eviction is always an option."
Cora snickered before eyeing Mia appreciatively.
"What?"
"Ye stood up to him."
Mia shrugged. "Of course. He's just a bully and a chauvinistic pig."
Cora frowned and waved a hand in the direction of Mia's face. "I thought…"
"Oh. Yeah, no. That was a one-off, and after I picked myself off the floor, I threatened Colt with a lamp. I'm not a pushover, but five years of nitpicking beat me down. He was subtle and slow about it. It took taking the hit to wake me up. But no, I spent a lot of years in foster care. You toughen up quick."
"Mia," Cora murmured, pity crawling across her face.
She turned to fuss with the display she knocked over when Campbell caused her to retreat into the table. "It's not like I was abused, but you learn fast to be independent, and yeah, you figure out how to take a punch and throw one."
"Lord, love a duck," Cora muttered before grabbing Mia and yanking her down for a hug. "Well, no more. Ye've family in me now. Me and Henry. We'll look after ye."
"Thank you," Mia sighed. She didn't mean to upset Cora, but sometimes her filter… didn't. "I want you to know I'm really happy here, more so than I thought I would be. And I've met so many people. It's like I finally found… home."
"That's 'cause ye have, lass," Cora murmured. "Ye truly have."
Mia pulled back, her smile damp but still bright. "So… there's a booth at the end where the Anderson kids have a box full of kittens…."
Cora snickered and shook her head. "If yer getting one, get two. They can have a playmate. We'll train 'em to stay off my countertops, but they'll be good to keep down the mice."
"We have mice!" Mia hissed.
"In a house that auld? Of course, we've mice! But a couple wee kitties, and they'll solve the issue right quick."
Mia shuddered. "Yeah, okay, yeah. I'm getting two."
Cora chuckled. "Text Henry to come get ye. Ye can head to the store and get what's needed afore they close."
"I've always wanted a cat," Mia grinned and hugged Cora again. "Thank you, Cora!"
"Bah!" She flapped her hands, her cheeks red. "Tis yer house."
"But you live there, too, so if you didn't want them, I wouldn't get them."
Cora eyed her, bemused and shook her head. "Yer a good lass, a little strange but sweet. Now, gaun. Aff wit ye. There's a good dent in yer work, and mine, so packing up will be quick when yer back."
Mia giggled, nodded, and hurried off, pulling out her phone as she rushed to see if the kittens she fell in love with were still available.
~
As Mia settled down for bed that night, it was with a pair of furry bed warmers. The grey kitten with the black tiger stripes she called Tyr, and the white with the cinnamon mask, ears, tail tip, and toes she named Idunn.
They were wonderfully sweet, loving, and adorably affectionate. It surprised her how affectionate when they followed her around the house rather than running off to explore.
There was no fear in the pair. She expected them to be skittish and hide under the furniture, but they didn't. They pounced along behind her, chasing her heels as she set up a litter box near the back entrance and a second in her bathroom. She wanted to keep the scamps with her at night for a while, just until they were comfortable, but she didn't need any accidents.
Crawling into bed, she smiled when they scrambled up the bedding, jumped across the comforter, and climbed into her lap, where they snuggled together and began to purr.
Mia smiled and stroked their soft fur as she looked around her room.
Candles glowed on Loki's altar next to his new raven statue, a fire crackled in the fireplace, and fresh flowers bloomed on the mantle in a polished crystal vase.
Beyond the windows, the night closed in around the farm. It was still overcast, so she couldn't see the stars, but there was hardly any light pollution on the farm. One day, she knew she would look up and see the glory of the cosmos again.
The night sky in Canada could be so majestic, but it was hard to see from the city. Out here, on Ashwood Farm, she imagined it would be spectacular.
The presence beside her drew her from her musings.
"Thank you."
For?
Mia looked up, but there was no one there. Not physically at least.
She smiled and held out her hand. The warmth of someone grasping her fingers filled her with peace, comfort and joy.
"Everything. I know you had a hand in all this."
If I did, you deserve it. The hardships of the past have not soured your spirit. You make me proud, girl.
Mia blushed and pulled her hand away. "Thank you, Loki."
If you really want to thank me, you will read the good parts out loud.
Mia laughed at his teasing. "You're terrible."
You love it.
Yeah, she did.

The Pains We Endure | Chapter Four
Masterlist | Ao3
Chapter Summary: Edith prepares for her dinner with Aesop, looking forward to the future for the first time in a while. When the evening doesn't go as planned, she's forced to make a decision that earns Aesop's disapproval. (Aesop Sharp x OC)
Chapter Rating: M (We're getting a little darker now)
Chapter Warnings: Use of unforgiveable curses (the full trifecta, but no gory details), death (non descriptive), allusions to abusive relationship
Word count: 5.2k
A/N: This is the longest chapter yet, and the last update until sometime in December. I really loved writing this one, I hope you enjoy! 4 of 6.
Fifteen minutes was twenty minutes too many to be late for an engagement, but Edith found she was quickly exceeding it. Peeves had chosen the worst evening to prove that ink bottles were not suitable for juggling, which made Edith and several students delayed in leaving the library.
Edith certainly couldn’t rush getting ready. She had always taken an appropriate amount of pride in her appearance, but tonight was special. Never in her life had Edith wanted to look nice for someone, but she felt that way now. Perhaps it was a challenge. Aesop’s respect was hard won, after all. Or perhaps she simply liked the way he looked at her, a subtle gleam in his eye.
“A little of both.” Edith muttered to herself as she peered at her reflection, taming a particularly stubborn lock of hair.
Once she had triumphed, Edith took one last assessing look in the mirror. She wore a blue dress, modest in design and a little behind the current fashions, but it suited her figure nicely. Edith owned little jewelry, but the simple silver stud earrings and ribbon necklace met her preferred amount of subtlety. Everything in place. Edith wondered for a moment if the silver comb, with its little metalwork flowers, was too much, but she decided it added just the right amount of sparkle to her black hair.
Checking her watch, Edith quickened her pace. She couldn’t bear to use floo flames, the idea of soiling her dress with soot enough to make her itch. Surely Aesop would forgive her tardiness when she explained what kept her.
A kaleidoscope of butterflies had made a home in her stomach. Edith had not done something like this in… Well, she had never done something like this. Courtship. Or was she reading too much into Aesop’s invitation? What if she did something wrong? Each step that brought her closer to her destination heightened her anxiety.
And yet, she felt excited at what tonight could be. Thoughts of the night he almost kissed her were almost enough to keep her warm in the chilly evening air. It was colder outside than she had realized, even once she entered the bustling village.
The Three Broomsticks was just coming into view when she heard it.
A voice that made her steps falter, her blood going cold. Fear froze her breath in her lungs.
“Ello, Edie.”
Edith slowly turned to face him. Until the last second, she could think she was mistaken. She could pretend it wasn’t true. But of course it was. He hadn’t changed at all in two years. His dark hair was a little longer, his cheeks a little thinner, but those hazel eyes still bore into her with a dark intensity. Instinctively, Edith shrunk back.
“Jasper.”
“Don’t make a scene, now. Walk with me.” Jasper took her arm, feigning the role of a suitor, and pulled her forward. Battling a wave of fear-induced dizziness, Edith stumbled before falling into step beside him.
“How did you find me?” Edith hated how her voice trembled in fear. Couldn’t she even pretend to be brave?
“Can’t hide from me, Edie.” He flashed her a sinister smile. “But you know what I want. Just give it to me, and I’ll leave you alone.”
Edith wrenched her arm away from Jasper. “No! I’m not telling you anything.”
He grabbed hold of Edith again, shushing her. Jasper pulled her into the shadows, trapping her against a wall. “What did I say about making a scene? You’re going to get yourself in trouble.”
Hardening her gaze, Edith met those cruel hazel eyes as they narrowed at her. “I-I’m not afraid of you anymore.”
Jasper drew his wand, holding it between them so it wasn’t obvious he was threatening her. “Then maybe I’ll remind you why you should be.”
Aesop was not overly concerned at fifteen minutes past the hour. Any number of things might have delayed Edith for such a short amount of time. At half the hour, he was sure she would be only a moment more, and ordered a firewhiskey before Sirona lost her patience.
With three quarters of the hour past, Aesop was not sure how to feel. Edith would not stand him up, he could not believe that. What if she had doubts? What if something serious had happened?
His pocket watch told him what Aesop accepted as the truth. It had been an hour, and Edith wasn’t coming. He drained the last of the firewhiskey and set the glass on the table with a thunk.
The sting of rejection and the uneasiness of concern warred within Aesop as he stepped into the chill night air. He was a man who always knew what his next move would be, but now he felt uncertain. Should he return to Hogwarts? Or take a walk through the village to clear his head and wait a little longer?
Aesop liked to think it was instinct, not wounded pride, that led him down the village lane to the right. Up past Zonko’s, which seemed intolerably cheerful to him tonight, ignoring the witches and wizards he passed going about their business.
As he reached Pippin's, Aesop paused, wondering if now might be a good time to discuss those ingredients for a cure. But it was getting late, and Aesop saw through the windows that he was closing up for the evening. The cold was getting to him, each step jarring the ache in his leg. Aesop just couldn't bring himself to go back yet.
He turned toward the bridge that spanned the creek running through the village. The moon was bright overhead, lighting up the cobblestones in front of him, the trees, the little house on the cliff.
That was when he saw her.
Edith stood at the edge of a cliff behind the Hog's Head, staring into the rocky water below. Aesop couldn’t see her face, but he could tell even from this distance that she looked pensive. She swayed in the chilly breeze, a breath away from pitching forward.
“Edith?”
She didn’t respond when he called out to her, and his tone shifted from confusion to alarm.
“Edith!”
The distance was short, but the terrain was difficult with his leg. He took a shortcut, clambering over the dilapidated stone wall between the bridge and the house, swearing when his limp almost caused him to pitch forward. Edith remained unmoving and silent when he called her name again.
A change seemed to come over her as Aesop finally reached her. Edith yelped in surprise, eyes widening in fear at the drop below, as if she didn’t know what she was doing there. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her back from the edge. Aesop took her shoulders, prepared to ask her what the hell she was doing, when he heard a voice behind them.
“Might try staying out of things that aren’t your business. She was never going to fall, or jump, if you were worried.”
Aesop turned to the man, his argument dying on his lips. He recognized the face, only this time it was no boggart. Aesop drew his wand. “Stay back.”
“No need for that.” McNair looked around anxiously. “Edie and I have some business to discuss, don’t we, Edie?”
“I’m not telling you anything, so you might as well kill me.” Edith tried to put a bite in her voice, but it fell flat.
“That won’t do me any good, will it?” McNair demanded, stepping forward, wand raised.
Aesop stepped between them. The man was clearly volatile and not afraid to use unforgivable curses. McNair must have used imperio to get Edith to the cliff. He couldn’t rush this.
“Aesop, no,” Edith said behind him. “Please, just go.”
McNair looked at Aesop and laughed. “You make a new friend, Edie? He the best you can do? Well, maybe he’ll fare better than your last ones.”
“Expelliarmus!”
McNair deflected Aesop’s spell with a flick of his wand. “Call off your guard dog, Edie. Don’t want to make a habit of getting people killed.”
They were attracting attention now. Voices and pointing fingers directed to the three of them. Aesop saw McNair’s eyes shift as it put him on edge. Distracted him.
“Stupefy!”
Aesop’s spell would have hit true, but McNair disapparated in the knick of time. He turned to Edith. Her gaze was fixed on the spot where McNair had disappeared, mind somewhere else entirely. Edith shivered, but whether it was from the cold, fear, or a combination of both, he couldn’t tell.
He shrugged his coat off and draped it over her shoulders. Its green hues contrasted with her blue dress. Not that Aesop had an eye to notice such things.
The suddenness of the warmth, eclipsing the cold she felt within and without, brought Edith’s mind back to the here and now. Her heart raced and her fingers were numb, but Edith was suddenly aware of two conflicting, life-altering truths.
She looked up into Aesop’s inscrutable gaze. “Why is it you always appear when I need you?”
“Edith.” This time, his gaze did not soften when he spoke her name. “I think we should talk.”
With Aesop’s hand at her elbow, they made their way to the Three Broomsticks in silence. Edith hugged his coat closer. It smelled like him, and that was a comfort. It was a scent she wanted to commit to memory.
Once they settled in a corner, a cup of tea and a firewhiskey sitting between them, Aesop fixed her with a stare.
Edith studied the pattern of the wooden table, feeling his eyes on her. “Go ahead. Ask me.”
“This man clearly has some kind of hold over you. What did he mean by getting people killed?”
Taking a deep breath, Edith finally looked up and met his steely gaze. “This is not an easy story for me to tell, Aesop. But I think you deserve to know exactly what happened that night.”
Aesop settled in his chair, lifting the glass of firewhiskey. His stare remained fixed on her, giving her the whole of his attention. “Go on.”
A drink of tea for courage, and then a deep breath. “It all started when our friend Simon quit his job at the auror office. He had found this book, you see…”
June 15, 1887
Flames crackling in the hearth were the only source of light and sound in the little house. Hands shaking, Edith tied together bundles of herbs for drying, but her mind was not on her work. Edith's thoughts remained on her friends, and the strange book they were delivering to a trusted contact. How they put themselves in danger to make sure it did not fall into the wrong hands.
How she was useless with the kinds of magic that could help them. No, Edith's talents were with her enchantments and her plants and finding obscure knowledge in books, but she could never fight. Her housemates never let her forget that.
Four resounding cracks echoed in the room. Edith dropped the bundle in her hand with a start, sending herbs across the floor. She jumped up when she saw Finn, leaning heavily on Iris, his arm bent and bleeding.
Zara's authoritative voice cut through the air. “Is Jasper here?”
Edith shook her head, leaning in to look at Finn's arm. "I haven't seen him today."
“I knew it,” Zara growled. “Edith, I’ve told you for weeks, ever since I overheard him talking to that Malfoy fellow in the Leaky Cauldron. You can’t trust him!”
Zara hadn’t realized the impact her warnings had on Edith. She had noticed things about Jasper since Zara had pointed it out: the way he acted around them, the way he treated Edith when they were alone. It had culminated in an argument with him last night. Too little, too late, as they say.
"I know, I didn't-"
"He'll know we've come here to regroup," said Simon. "I'm sure he'll be here any minute and he won't be alone."
"We could go into hiding. The place we talked about last year." Zara glanced at everyone in turn.
They all knew the place in question. The location chosen to regroup if something went wrong. None of them would dare speak it aloud in case someone was listening, but they all nodded in understanding.
They all felt a shudder through the air. The wards Zara and Simon had placed on the house before they left were being attacked. It wouldn't be long now.
“Zara, take the others and go,” Simon said, his voice low. “I’ll hold them off.”
“Simon… no,” Zara pled.
“I’ll join you if I can. We can’t let anyone get the book, you know that.”
Zara looked between Simon, the others, and the door, then back to Simon. She kissed him twice, and touched her forehead to his. “I love you.”
Edith was gathering her apothecary box on the other side of the room. She couldn't leave without it, especially given the state of Finn's arm. Jars rattled, Edith's hands shaking as she hurriedly scooped up everything she could. She heard the other behind her, snatching up essentials they could apparate with.
"Bombarda!"
The door flew inward with a crash, dust and plaster pluming in the air. The tall, imposing presence of Jasper McNair filled the doorframe.
Until this moment, Edith hadn't had to admit to herself that she had been wrong. That she had been foolish and naïve. That she had put her friends in danger because of it. But now he stood there, a wicked smile on his face that he had never dared to wear in front of her before, and there was no more doubt. No more pretending. This was all her fault.
"Jasper, no!" she cried, pulling his attention from the others for a split second.
“Stupefy!”
Edith fell back against the wall as the spell hit her squarely on the chest. Her head spinning, she could just comprehend what occurred next, at the fringe of her senses.
Simon stood protectively in front of the other three, his wand pointed at Jasper. "Zara, now!"
“Sorry, Edith,” Zara muttered as she, Finn, and Iris disapparated.
Simon and Jasper traded spells, the lights bright in Edith's eyes as she slowly got to her feet. She fumbled for her wand.
"S-Stupefy!" The spell hit, but it did not flare with light like ones Jasper and Simon flung at each other.
Her fear would be her undoing.
The distraction it created was enough to give Simon a small opening, and he took advantage of it. He hit with another spell, knocking Jasper backward.
"Enough of this!" Jasper screamed. “Avada Kedavra!”
“Simon!” Edith screamed as the man fell to the floor with a thud.
Jasper stood and brushed himself off. He turned his stony gaze on Edith.
"Jasper... Why?" There were so many questions wrapped up in that one little word. It felt pointless to ask now.
Jasper chuckled. “You always thought you were so clever, Edie. But you were too easily molded. Bet you don't feel so clever now.”
Edith swallowed. Manipulated. Used. Lied to. She had wanted to be wanted so badly that she was blind to all of it.
He advanced toward her, smirking. “But then, you’d never suspect me. I said I love you, didn’t I?”
He stopped in front of her. “You’re such a silly girl, Edie.”
"It's over now, Jasper," Edith said, her voice shaking like the rest of her. "The book isn't here and the others are long gone now."
“But you know where they went. Why don’t you stop being silly, and just tell me where they took it.” He closed the distance, trapping Edith between himself and the wall. “Just tell me the truth, and I won’t have to hurt you.”
“No.”
Edith could never make up for the harm she caused, but she didn't have to make it worse. Even if it killed her.
Jasper grabbed her by the hair, wrenching her head back, lips twitching into a smirk when Edith cried out. He pressed the tip of his wand to her throat. “You know you don’t like it when I’m rough with you, Edie,” he hissed in her ear. “Well, you don’t know how rough I can be.”
Edith strained against him. “I’m not telling you anything!”
Jasper yelled in frustration, throwing Edith to the floor. “We’ll do it the fun way, then.”
“Crucio!”
Edith reached for her tea, the end of her tale hanging between them, suspended in the tense silence. She felt the weight of it on her shoulders, keeping her head bowed.
“You make it easy for him to exploit it. The way you blame yourself.”
Edith finally looked at him, her brow furrowing.
“Why shouldn’t I? I led Jasper right to them. It could have been two against one, but I couldn’t help Simon.”
“You tried. That counts for something.”
“But not enough,” Edith argued. “If I hadn’t been so useless, he might not have…” She couldn’t bring herself to say the word.
Aesop leaned forward, laying his hand atop hers. “Edith, Simon knew what he was doing. Your friend Zara had suspicions of her own about McNair and barely acted on them. It was not your fault alone.”
“But I do share the blame,” Edith pointed out.
“Do not forget that I understand exactly how you feel. I caused the death of my partner. Indirectly, perhaps, but much of the fault lies with me. I know there is nothing I can say that will take away your guilt. But history need not repeat itself if you learn from it.”
Edith sighed. She looked down at Aesop’s hand resting on hers. Silence stretched between them. Edith knew there was wisdom in his words, but her heart would not listen. All she saw were visions of Jasper McNair hurting people - killing people - because she did not act.
"What now?" Aesop's voice cut through those images, bringing her gaze to his. "What will you do?"
Her heart sank. Edith knew exactly what she would do. "I must speak with Matilda."
Edith was pensive as they made their way back to Hogwarts. Aesop's coat still enveloped her shoulders, and she held it close. She was getting used to its weight, its warmth.
"Thank you, by the way. I never said." Edith gestured to the coat.
He answered with a wry smile. "It looked like you need it more than I."
When they entered the castle, she reluctantly shrugged it off and held it out to him. It made her feel comfortable. Protected. Things she didn't want to feel in the conversation she had planned.
Aesop quirked an eyebrow as he took the coat back, sliding it onto his broad shoulders. His gaze traveled over Edith, briefly, taking in her appearance properly for the first time that night. Edith was a little disheveled, but the overall effect of her efforts was not diminished.
The night was not supposed to be like this.
Under Aesop's gaze, which was quickly filling with concern at the look on her face, Edith steeled herself. Then she headed toward Matilda's office.
Aesop struggled to keep up with Edith’s purposeful strides. She almost hoped he would give up - he would not like what came next, she just knew it. But their difference in height made up for the mobility difference, and he was never far behind.
Matilda looked up in surprise when Edith waltzed into her office without knocking. “Edith, you look lovely this evening. Whatever is the matter?”
“Jasper has found me. We just encountered him in Hogsmeade.”
Matilda’s face fell. “My dear, I’m so sorry. Were you hurt?”
“No.” Edith’s gaze slid to Aesop, and Matilda seemed to understand. “But Matilda, you know what this means. I have to leave Hogwarts.”
“Edith,” Aesop objected at the same time Matilda tutted.
“Dear girl, you cannot be serious.” Matilda came around to the other side of the desk. “Aren’t you tired of running from him? We could fetch the aurors, have justice served.”
Edith shook her head. “You know he has friends in the ministry. He’ll just get away again.”
Aesop stepped up beside her. “This cannot be your answer to what happened.”
“Jasper is dangerous. We all know that. If I stay, I’ll be putting innocent people in danger. Maybe students. I can’t do that. I won’t.”
“He’s a wanted man whose shown his face in the village,” Aesop reminded her. “He won’t act rashly.”
“Aesop is right. He wouldn’t take that risk, not now. And he cannot reach you here at the school.”
Edith took a steadying breath. “My mind is made up. There is a train to London from Hogsmeade Station tomorrow evening. I will be on it. Perhaps one day I can return.”
Matilda frowned, folding her arms. “Stubborn girl.” She looked at Aesop, as if to say “Maybe she’ll listen to you.”
“I’m sorry, Matilda. If I could see any other way… But I just can’t.”
“I hope you change your mind, Edie.” Matilda’s voice filled with concern and irritation. “If you come to your senses and realize you have other options, you know where to find me.”
Aesop was silent as he escorted Edith back to her quarters, their paces evenly matched. She sensed the irritation coming off him in prickly waves.
“I know you are trying to find the words to convince me not to leave, but there are none. I have to do this.”
“No, you don’t. As Matilda said, you are safe here. You have paths you may not have had before. Choose another.”
His tone reminded her of when they first met, the one he no doubt used on his students often. Impatience. Disappointment.
They came to a stop in front of her door, and she turned to face him. “I know what Matilda said. She isn’t always right.”
“Of course she is right, and you know it.” Aesop looked her over, his gaze softening a little. “And it’s not the only thing she was right about.”
“What do you mean?”
He cupped her face, his warm palm fitting softly against the curve of her cheek. “You look lovely, Edith.”
Their gazes locked for a long moment, seeing visions in each other’s eyes of what the night might have been like if things had gone as planned. Edith could see his mind at work, plotting, surely, before he turned away. She watched his back as he limped to his own rooms.
Their eyes met one last time before he went inside, and Edith felt a pang of something in her chest.
Two years running from Jasper.
It had never felt so painful to leave a place before.
A clatter resounded through the study as Mirabel set her teacup down with an exclamation. “What do you mean? You can’t just up and leave in the middle of the school year without an explanation.”
"It's almost time for Christmas break. I'm sure no one will feel my absence when classes resume."
"Edith, that's simply not true."
Mirabel took Edith's shoulders and turned her around, forcing her to look up from the books she was packing. The earnestness in the redhead's eyes was touching. "I miss you terribly already. As will Matilda. And you know Professor Ronen will miss those little charmed flowers you leave everywhere."
A smile flickered over Edith's face for a moment. "Well, I'm sure you will manage without me."
Mirabel sighed. "I just wish you would tell me what's wrong. Perhaps I could help."
When Edith didn't answer, Mirabel pressed. "Did something happen with Professor Sharp last night?"
That was enough to elicit a reaction. Edith's head snapped up. "Whatever do you mean?"
"Well, yesterday you were so excited about having dinner with him, and today you are leaving. Was the evening not what you expected?"
Edith felt a flutter run through her. It was dangerously close to the truth, while being dangerously incorrect at the same time.
"No. No, Aesop has done nothing wrong." Her voice was soft. "Quite the opposite."
"I'm glad to hear it. But it doesn't explain why you are leaving."
"It's a long story," Edith said, turning back to her bookshelf. "But it is necessary."
The redhead's brow furrowed. "You are doing little to assuage my worry."
"I know." Edith wasn't sure how to tell Mirabel that she should be worried. Edith certainly was.
"At least promise to keep in touch."
A sad smile. "I shall do my best."
Edith surveyed the room. She had packed up the most essential items in her trunk, but she could not take everything tonight. "I suppose I'll have to arrange for the rest to be delivered."
“I will look after these plants for you.” Mirabel gestured to the few that Edith had to leave behind. They were common plants, things that Edith could easily pick up and grow again when she settled for a while. Edith carefully stored the rare, difficult plants in her trunk, using enchantments. “You have a few hours before your train, don’t you? Say you’ll join me for one last cup of tea.”
Swallowing back tears that threatened to break her composure, Edith smiled. “One last cup.”
In the midst of a restless night, Aesop had come to a decision. An idea that might convince Edith not to leave. Something that would make her understand that everyone at Hogwarts wanted her to stay.
That he wanted her to stay.
Thus, he spent most of the day preparing what Aesop expected to be a grand gesture, especially coming from him. When he was prepared, when the words were in his mind, he made his way to Edith's quarters. Aesop glanced at his pocket watch. An hour and a half before her train.
Just enough time.
But when he arrived, finding the door standing open, Aesop was surprised to see Mirabel sitting in front of the fire. Edith was nowhere to be seen.
"Where's Edith?" He did not bother with ceremony, impatience coloring his tone.
Mirabel looked up in surprise. She was apparently finishing a cup of tea as she stared into the fire. She stood and walked toward him. "Aesop, do you know why she's leaving?"
"Where is she?" Aesop repeated.
"She received notice that the train timetable was misprinted. It leaves an hour earlier than she expected." Mirabel shook her head. "Edith has already left."
“Damn!”
Aesop thrust what he was holding into Mirabel’s hands and stormed down the hall.
She looked down in confusion, taken aback by his sudden change in demeanor. "Aesop?" Mirabel called after him, but he ignored her.
Aesop had never realized that Hogsmeade Station was so bloody far away. Even employing the use of floo flames, he had underestimated the distance.
Of course, he had never wanted to get there so quickly before.
He almost sighed in relief when he saw Edith standing on the platform, no train in sight. Bathed in the golden colors of the fading sun, the sadness etched on her features was prominent. Her anxiety was obvious in how she clutched the handle of her satchel. Edith was staring down the tracks, watching for the train, though Aesop could guess the train itself was the last thing on her mind. He reached the edge of the platform and called out to her.
Roused from the private pity party in her mind by the sound of her name, Edith looked up. “Aesop?” His limp seemed more pronounced, and he was out of breath as he joined her on the platform.
"You were going to leave without saying goodbye?"
"I couldn't find you. I thought you were angry."
"Furious."
"You came all this way to tell me that?"
"No." Aesop sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I came to tell you that you are acting like a naïve child, repeating the same impulsive mistake you’ve made several times in the past and expecting a different outcome.”
Edith stiffened, her eyebrows lifting. His tone was not especially harsh, but his words were wounding. “Your point?”
"Is that who you want to be?"
Scoffing, Edith shook her head. "We can't change who we are."
"Of course we can. We have no power over the things that happen to us. But we have a choice in how we react to them." Aesop closed the distance between them, dark eyes intense as his gaze met hers. "You have a choice now, Edith. Fear or bravery. Do you let him win? Or do you refuse to let him hurt you anymore?"
“Don’t you understand? I don’t care that he hurts me. Only that he hurts others to do it. If that means a life of caring for no one so that he can’t use them, then I’m willing to accept it.”
A frustrated growl force itself past Aesop’s lips. “Is that really want you want? To spend your life running away? He will always have this hold over you unless you free yourself from him.”
“I can’t even defend myself from a boggart!”
“Then you’ll learn.”
Edith faltered. It sounded like such a straightforward solution when he said it like that. As if it was that simple.
Aesop took her hand, his fingers tightening around hers to emphasize his words. “You’re not alone anymore. You have a faculty full of experienced witches and wizards who would help you. We can figure this out together if you stay.”
His rationale was an assault, tearing holes in the walls Edith had constructed. Leaving had always been the easier option. She had been resolved, had made peace with the pain of walking away from Hogwarts. It was different this time, no matter how she tried to convince herself otherwise. The very thought of leaving her friends, her colleagues, had filled her heart with anguish, but Edith had buried it because she knew it was the right choice.
Aesop was not a man to let things stay buried.
Flurries of snow descended around them, and Edith blinked one from her eyelashes. “I told you no words could convince me.”
“I know.”
Aesop’s hand found her waist, and he tugged her close. He pressed his lips to Edith’s, a kiss so passionate and tender that it far surpassed her imagination. It didn’t last long enough, and she soon felt the bite of cold air where his mouth had been.
“Stay with me.” his husky voice growled in her ear.
Edith stared up at him, her heart racing. She didn’t know what to say. Maybe she didn’t need to say anything. Her fingers grasped his lapel, and she pulled him into another kiss. Edith dropped her satchel to the ground, her fingers curling in his hair as she leaned into him. The kiss grew heated, their mouths moving in harmony. The rest of the world melted away so completely, Edith almost didn’t notice the sound of the train pulling into the station behind them.
Their lips parted, but neither of them moved. They stared at each other, catching their breath. Aesop raised an eyebrow. “Is that a yes?”
"You really think I can learn?"
"If I can teach Weasley not to blow up a cauldron, I can teach you to defend yourself."
"But you haven't taught Weasley not to blow up a cauldron."
Aesop chuckled. "I'm expecting you to be a better student."
His fingers danced over the back of her neck. "Say you'll stay."
Her voice was a whisper against his cheek. "I'll stay."
Aesop's arm around her waist tightened, and their lips met again. As the snow fell in earnest, Edith filled with a warmth she had not felt in years.
