The Winchesters 1x02: Teach Your Children Well

Topeka, Kansas 1972

We’re 30 seconds into finding love and peace at a commune in Topeka, Kansas this week when we’re hit with Barry telling Maya this knowledge bomb: “We were like dolls, you know the Russian ones? Trapped inside our parents, and our parents’ parents.” They wander into the forest, Maya wanting to stargaze and Barry wanting to confront his difficult father. It’s convenient for Barry that his dad is already hanging out in the forest! Oh wait, nevermind, it’s just your not-so-standard forest monster!

Savannah, Georgia

The Scooby Gang are hunting zombies while Dean tells us (or SOMEONE?!? WHO?) that our parents might raise us and teach us how to hunt but there comes a time when we have to ditch their drill sergeant, abusive, neglectful asses for a better life (or something like that). The gang is in a warehouse filled with dead bodies. Mary is looking for documents on the Akrida. Ada lets the others know the file cabinets are empty. Mary finds an empty shotgun shell on the ground with her father’s initials on it. Samuel has already been there. 

ZOMBIE ATTACK!

Mary and Carlos take the zombies out (John helps!) while Ada and Lata struggle to get the monster catcher box to work. 

Mary finds a news article about the missing kid, Barry. It seems that Samuel is in the habit of leaving cryptic messages for Mary to find so she knows when and where to work her next case. The time before cell phones was the worst, amirite? Mary “I’m not bossy, I’m the boss” Campbell insists everyone follow her, and with some minor pushback, they all acquiesce. 

In the van, John confesses to Mary that he’s frustrated with their inability to find Samuel. He was a scout in the Marines. (Totally would have guessed this from the 20+ years it took him to find the YED!) He wonders if Henry left that note for him to also follow in his footsteps, but John doesn’t know how. Mary reassures him that it’ll take time to learn this new life. They’re cute and flirty, and honest to god, I just can’t with them. I will temporarily forget the future to find them adorable together, sue me. 

They make it back to Lawrence and one pissed-off Millie. John fights with his mother and then takes off with the others without resolving anything. 

They make it to Topeka where Mary and John dress up in their finest blue and green clothes to interview Barry’s father. John is less than pleased to use the alias “Mick Fleetwood”. The grumpy face genes are strong in this family; Sam would be so proud. They tell him they were friends of Barry’s. 

Lata and Carlos hang out in the motel. Lata tries engaging Carlos with a little gossip but Carlos confides that he is a little put out by not being the only one on the stage. They’re interrupted by a returning John and Mary. Barry’s dad apparently was told by Maya that Barry was taken by a monster in the woods. Remember kids, just say no to drugs! 

The only thing Carlos processes from the story is that they get to go to a commune! And we get to witness a delightful little montage of dancing to Age of Aquarius interspersed with scenes from the commune. 

Lata and Carlos head to interview Maya. She tells them that Barry thought he saw his father in the woods before he was taken. John and Mary (Did I notice the white dress that is not a pink dress but still makes me think about the not-white dress in the pilot? I don’t know, maybe.) interview Clyde, the commune leader. He talks to them about shedding their past, letting go of the people who hurt you, your parents, etc. Mary is suspicious of the necklace that Clyde is wearing so they head back to the van to search through Lata’s books. (Natasha: Mary’s white dress with the medallion hanging over her future stab wound drives me BANANAS. It’s like a little clue!)

Meanwhile, back at the garage, Ada introduces herself to Millie, and lets her know that she knew Henry. She also rats out the kids’ location. There’s jasmine growing on the garage walls and Ada asks if she can take some. Millie doesn’t care. Ada tells her that it’s for protection. (AND SCREAM, maybe we can get a prequel of the prequel about Henry and Millie in their youth.) (Natasha: Nesting dolls all the way down.)

Lata locates the symbol. “It’s Celtic. Triskelion. Symbol for–,” she starts. “Transformation,” John finishes. 

Shapeshifter? 

They head out to find their #1 suspect, Clyde, before he kidnaps again. 

Meanwhile, Clyde is luring a young woman into the woods. He spots a nun in the foliage (and that split second shot of a nun in a full habit was kinda creepy. Good job, show!) He runs to Sister Bernadete, the source of his childhood trauma. Without a word, tree roots envelope him and he’s sucked underground. 

The Scooby gang finds the woman wandering in the woods. They also find green blood. Mary says they’re dealing with a mimic. They need copper to kill it. Unfortunately Carlos does not carry cheap garbage weaponry made out of pennies. John hatches a plan to become a copper thief and grab the copper pipes from their motel. Lata thinks that the green blood is really sap and the purple flowers on the ground are strange. Mary digs in her heels and tells John to grab the pipes. Lata collects the flowers just in case. 

Ada prepares herself a nice, soothing cup of tea when Lata calls asking for help to identify the flower. They identify it as a rare plant from Columbia, and Lata heads to her stash of books in the bookmobile - er, van. 

For Ray of Sunshine Science:

Ada settles in with her tea and a sheaf of paper. She clears her throat delicately, then the magic takes her. She casts her head back and her hand starts writing. (Can that tea help with writer’s block? Seems handy.)

Mary and Carlos talk it out. Carlos accuses her of being too much like her dad - ignoring the people around her. He brings up MARY’S frustration with her dad, and Mary appears to chew on that. Lata emerges from the woods in a rush - she’s figured it out. And it’s not a mimic! 

Lata shows them the book passage. La Tunda was a real woman who abused her children. When the children tried to escape, she killed them and buried them in the garden. The children’s remains cast a curse on the woman, transforming her into a hungry monster who goes after disobedient children. She lures in her victims with a familiar face before trapping them and feeding on them slowly. 

Mary realizes that John had JUST been wandering around the woods, morosely and rebelliously talking about his relationship with his mother. John’s the next victim! They race off. (It’s good to see that the monster of the week continues to be a Metaphor of Character Development.)

Back at the motel, John tears out the copper piping. His mom shows up at the motel. “A child’s job is to rebel,” she tells him, normally. He begs her to believe in him - he’s strong enough to hunt. She tells him that his dad never believed in him, as evidenced by his failure to train John in the Men of Letters. (I feel like this is more groundwork laid on John’s future parenting philosophy.) Her words are carefully hurtful, and we can already tell that it’s out of character for Millie. (Millie, you would have taken SUCH good care of John and Mary’s boys ;_;) But John swallows it hook, line, and sinker until the monster slips up and brings up Samuel. He never told his mom about Samuel and Mary! Openness is out of character! John tries to whack her with a copper pipe, but gets sucked into La Tunda’s magical forest lair. 

Mary apologizes to Lata and Losy. She should have listened to Lata and Carlos, but instead John’s been captured by a hungry monster. The gang metaphorically hugs it out and resolves to rescue John.

John wakes up bound in the woods, and we discover that Barry and Clyde are still alive (but with overall morale down to epically low levels). 

At the motel, Lata learns that La Tunda can only be killed by something as strong as her. Mary quickly reads between the lines, and summarizes Lata’s plan for the kids in the audience - they’ll use La Tunda’s own leg bone to stab her in the heart. “That is sick and twisted enough, it might just work,” Carlos declares. “I love that deeply weird side of you.”

John watches his mom pace around the clearing and proceed to emotionally torture and feed on Barry (as Barry’s dad). While La Tunda feeds, John sets himself and Clyde free and then confronts the monster. “Come on, John,” she says, smirking. “You think you can stand up to me? You don’t have it in you.” I AM FERAL PICTURING DEAN FIGHTING HIS DAD LIKE THIS. Hilarious that John’s fighting his mom because she tried to protect him. Anyway, it’s looking bad for John, when the Scooby Gang arrives. Mary confronts the monster and they rumble. 

John kicks out La Tunda’s leg (because he believes in himself. Boy power!) and it fractures. Mary grabs the bone and stabs the monster, spewing John with goo in a callback gag to the first monster-hunting open. The showrunners clearly understand our need to see John comically undermined.

A little while later, John and Mary watch Barry reunite with his dad and share a hug. Soft music plays while they exchange meaningful looks. Afterwards, they head to the garage where Millie greets them. Mary gets introduced to her, and Millie tells her that she fixed her car for free. Noice! Mary heads off and John addresses his mom. 

He tells her he wasn’t angry at her - he was angry at dad. He took out on Millie what he couldn’t take out on Henry. (Hurls self out window.) She tells him that she believes in him. She also gives him a little insight into her relationship with Henry - they fought over the Men of Letters but they still told each other ‘I love you’ at the end of the day.

Later, Carlos brings pizza and levity to the clubhouse. Mary and John address their parent issues briefly, when a secret door opens and Ada appears. She leads them into the hidden spell chamber from her tea drinking scene, nbd. There are apparently more rooms in the bunker, and I look forward to discovering them to further the plot! They find the papers she wrote under the influence of tea. Ada tells them it’s automatic writing - she did it to tap into the latent memories of the demon who possessed her. 

They think that the demon who possessed Ada knew who was after the box, and about Samuel and the Akrida. They can do it! They can track the demon and Samuel down with Ada’s purloined knowledge! Carlos interrupts. GUYS. THE PIZZA IS GETTING COLD. 

For Scooby Snack Time Science:

They head back for pizza while “Teach your children well” plays us out. Or, almost out. While the Scooby Gang bonds, Millie smiles over a sprig of Henry’s jasmine and a photo of herself and John. In the woods where the gang hunted La Tunda, a cloaked figure stalks, sucking up red magic and accompanied by a host of unearthly, scuttling creatures. YES!

i wiould like 2 hear more on the batim bioshock thing 🎤

oh my god okay. the creators of batim made it no secret they really liked bioshock. like. they REALLY liked bioshock. so much so that all of these things happen in both UNDER A CUT BEACUSE IM ABOUT TO GO CRAZY. also huge spoilers for batim and bioshock. obviously.

firstly i gotta say, I really really like the idea behind batim it was like babys first hyperfixation. whatever. the point is it fumbled hard in the last 3 chapters (only half of chapter 3 but 4 and 5 are bad. I wont budge on that)

anyway.

the collapse of a hypercapitalist empire

probably the most common thing you could see in any game, but the specifics between bioshock and batim are kind of hard to ignore once you see them. The creation of rapture and joey drew studios is extremely different, but in the end they end up as giant pieces of spectacle, all at the cost of worker exploitation.

SIMILARITIES I NOTICED IN RAPTURE AND THE STUDIO

in order of how much of a reach they are

arts section: kind of a stretch but yeah the music department kind of fits the bill to me at least. The subtle similarities between sammy lawrence and sander cohen interest me (idolization of the head figure of the fallen society, cult-like obsession really)

HUGE FUCKING STRUCTURES that are not really built to last the test of time (heavenly toys, the theme park [we'll get back to the park later], and what the fuck was that shit in chapter 5!)

dark ruined atmosphere (important to note that the studio feels more lost to time compared to rapture feeling rotten/decaying)

SIMILARITIES I NOTICED IN BASIC GAME ELEMENTS

(again listed as how much of a stretch they are)

audio logs/dairies being used to chronicle the fall of the empire/death of the workers. this is in a lot of games though (however the recorders look similar to me. again could be a stretch)

the needle weapon featured in chapter 3 strongly resembled the ones the little sisters use to harvest adam, and is even functioning in the exact same way.

malice (that's what i like to call the fucked up one) speaks to you primarily over speakers very similar to how any leading character in bioshock 1/2 will

cryptic writing on the walls (seen more in bioshock 2) to set the mood.

the music in bioshock and batim are scarily similar. STRONG violin motifs that are exceptionally unique to me, but not so much when compared to one another. (they also use music cues in many of the same situations, though that's kind of a stretch bc that's just another tool to set the mood that can be seen in a lot of games)

PLOT POINTS, CHARACTER MOMENTS, AND STORY BEATS THAT FEEL SIMILAR TO BIOSHOCK. no specific order because i really do feel all of them are pretty obvious once you look.

faceless protag who barely talks and has a plot twist past at the end of the game (this is present in bioshock 1 as well as the minerva's den DLC and bioshock infinite as much as i hate infinite)

Boring being turned into franked boris is pretty much the same as sinclaire being turned into subject omega. not only to do have to kill your close ally but he is turned into a horrible monster unable to stop himself from fighting you. (additionally, you are locked in the area with him and FORCED to deliver the kill. there is no rescue.)

the whole thing with malice wanting to be perfect and beautiful reminds me of Dr. Steinmen and his obsessive desire to pioneer perfect human beauty (before he goes piccaso mode)

Joey drew and Susie Campbell is a similarly exploitative relationship just like Andrew Ryan and Jasmine Jolene. (both resulting in the women meeting a horrible fate)

the main character returns to the location to fulfill some sort of predetermined plot set up by the antagonist

worker exploitation. I cannot hammer in enough how much people fucking brushed over this theme in both games. Joey and Andrew are shitty leaders who treat their working class employees like fucking garbage and expect no consequences

inhuman transformation as a result of unethical experimentation/treatment of people. (this one is a bit of a stretch as we don't get concrete confirmation that the ink monsters are all past humans, but I believe it's the most widely accepted interp so i'm putting that shit on anyway)

Martin Lawrence

Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence (born April 16, 1965) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, producer, talk show host, writer, and former Golden Gloves boxer. Lawrence came to fame during the 1990s, establishing a Hollywood career as a leading actor, most notably in the Fox television sitcom Martin and the films House Party, Boomerang, Bad Boys, Wild Hogs, Nothing to Lose, Blue Streak, Life, Big Momma's House, and A Thin Line Between Love and Hate.

Early life

The fourth of six children, Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence was born on April 16, 1965, in Frankfurt, West Germany, to American parents. His father, John Lawrence, was serving in the U.S. military at the time. Lawrence was named after civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and U.S. President John F. Kennedy. When Lawrence was seven, his father left the military, and the family moved from Germany back to the United States, settling in Landover, Maryland, in the Washington, D.C., area. After his parents divorced in 1973, Lawrence rarely saw his father, who was a police officer. His mother, Chlora (née Bailey), worked several jobs, including as a sales representative and cashier at various department stores to support her family.

During his teen years, Lawrence excelled at boxing.

While living in Maryland, Lawrence attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School and Friendly High School, and he lived in Apple Grove, becoming a Mid-Atlantic Golden Gloves boxing contender.

Career

In his early days, Lawrence did comedy shows in the Washington, D.C., area and supported himself through odd jobs. Comedian, Ritch Snyder saw his act and suggested Lawrence make connections in New York. Lawrence ended up moving to New York City and found his way to the legendary The Improv. Shortly after appearing at The Improv, Lawrence won a performance spot on Star Search. He did well on the show and made it to the final round, but did not win. However, executives at Columbia Pictures Television saw Martin's performance and offered him the role of Maurice Warfield in What's Happening Now!!; this was his first acting job. Upon cancellation of that show, Lawrence found bit parts in various films and television series. His breakthrough role was as Cee in Do the Right Thing. Other roles followed in films such as the House Party series, Talkin' Dirty After Dark, and the Eddie Murphy vehicle Boomerang. During this period, entertainment mogul Russell Simmons selected him to host the groundbreaking series Def Comedy Jam on HBO. Def Comedy Jam gave many comedians (including Chris Tucker, Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps, Bernie Mac and Cedric the Entertainer) mainstream exposure.

During his stint with Def Comedy Jam, Lawrence appeared in his own hit series, Martin, which aired on Fox. The show ran from 1992 to 1997 and was an enormous success. Martin was the flagship of Fox's Thursday-night line-up, which drew millions of viewers away from NBC's "Must See TV" line-up. He hosted Saturday Night Live on February 19, 1994, where he made crude remarks about women's genitalia and personal hygiene; the monologue was completely edited out of NBC reruns and syndicated versions, and Lawrence was banned from the show for life. Martin's ratings continued to skyrocket so much that Fox became more of a contender against NBC and came closer to being considered among the top television networks.

After Martin ended its run in 1997, Lawrence found work in comedy films. He often starred as the second lead opposite actors including Eddie Murphy, Danny DeVito, and Tim Robbins. Many of his films were blockbusters at the box office, including Nothing to Lose, Life, Blue Streak, and Big Momma's House. He also starred in critical- and box-office failures, including Black Knight and National Security. Regardless, his salary steadily increased to over $10 million per film role. He continues to work in film, with such films as Big Momma's House 2, which opened at No. 1 at North American box office and grossed almost $28 million its first weekend, and Wild Hogs (2007), in which he played a bored suburbanite seeking adventure on the open road in a biker comedy alongside John Travolta, Tim Allen and William H. Macy.

In 2006, Lawrence appeared on Inside the Actors Studio, during which Lawrence briefly brought back to life some of the characters he had portrayed on Martin. He also appeared in Open Season as Boog, one of the main characters of the film. The movie also starred Ashton Kutcher, Debra Messing, and Gary Sinise.

In 2008, Lawrence starred in Disney's College Road Trip co-starring with Raven-Symoné. It was his first G-rated film, but not his first appearance in a children's film: he supplied a voice for Open Season (2006) opposite Ashton Kutcher.

At the 2009 BET Awards he appeared in a spoof movie trailer with Jamie Foxx for a fictional movie, The Skank Robbers, that featured their respective television characters Sheneneh Jenkins and Ugly Wanda. In 2010, Fox announced that it was producing a film based on the sketch, featuring Foxx, Lawrence, and actress Halle Berry.

In 2011, Lawrence reprised his role as FBI agent Malcolm Turner in Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, the third film in the Big Momma series.

In January 2013, it was announced that Lawrence and Kelsey Grammer were considering pairing up to star in a comedy for Lionsgate TV. Partners, paired the two actors as Chicago lawyers from "vastly different backgrounds who unexpectedly meet in court on the worst day of their lives." The show premiered August 4, 2014, but was cancelled after one season after receiving poor reviews.

In 2020, Lawrence reprised his role as Detective Marcus Burnett in the third installment of the Bad Boys franchise, Bad Boys for Life, again alongside Will Smith. The film was considered a financial success, grossing $112 million in its first four days of release.

Relationships and family

Lawrence was engaged to actress Lark Voorhies in 1993. He married Miss Virginia USA, Patricia Southall, in 1995. Lawrence and Southall have a daughter, Jasmine Page (born January 15, 1996). They divorced in 1997. In 1997, Lawrence began a relationship with Shamicka Gibbs. They married on July 10, 2010, at Lawrence's Beverly Hills home. Actors Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washington were among the 120 wedding guests; Lawrence and Gibbs have two daughters, Iyanna Faith (born November 9, 2000) and Amara Trinity (born August 20, 2002). Lawrence filed for divorce from Gibbs on April 25, 2012, citing irreconcilable differences and asking for joint legal and physical custody of the children.

Lawrence owns a farm near Purcellville, Virginia. For several years, he owned a large mansion in the Beverly Park community in Beverly Hills, where he wedded Gibbs. However, following their divorce, the property was available for lease at $200,000 per month in June 2012. In 2013, the property was up for sale for $26.5 million, and eventually he sold it for $17.2 million to Bruce Makowsky, buying an Encino, Los Angeles property for $6.63 million.

Arrests, lawsuits and health problems

In July 1995, while on the set filming A Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Lawrence lashed out in a violent rage and was then hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

On May 8, 1996, he became increasingly erratic and was arrested after he brandished a pistol in the middle of an intersection on Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles, screaming, "They're trying to kill me!" He was again hospitalized, with his public-relations agent citing exhaustion and dehydration as the reasons for this episode.

In January 1997, Lawrence's Martin co-star Tisha Campbell-Martin filed a lawsuit against him, alleging sexual harassment and abuse both on and off set. By April 1997, Campbell had settled the lawsuit, and returned to appear in the last two episodes of the series.

In March 1997, Lawrence was arrested after punching a man in a Hollywood nightclub.

During August 1999, Lawrence slipped into a three-day coma after collapsing from heat exhaustion while jogging in 100 °F (38 °C) heat in preparation for Big Momma's House while wearing heavy clothing and a "plastic suit." He recovered in the hospital after nearly dying due to a body temperature of 107 °F (42 °C), his breathing assisted by a ventilator.

For the anniversary trip, all celebs will be staying at Hôtel Le K2 Altitude luxury hotel! Amenities include: ski passes, gym, heated indoor/outdoor pools, spa, movie theater, multiple bars/lounges, babysitting/childcare, playground for kids, arcade room, and free food/drinks at all hours of the day/night. Suites are available with multiple beds for non couples and a couples room is available for those rooming with their significant other.
