day-to-day, i do three things; swim (in a lake near my house. it's enchanted to not have any creatures or illnesses in it, Thank God!) read, and tan. i lay out in the sun for so long every day. i know that logically i don't have to care about tanning bc i'm a metamorphagus and i can change my skin color at whim (which i don't do?? btw??? i've seen ppl say that they do and i am NAWT a race changer good lord) and also the sun is not that strong in my hometown, but i just like laying in the sun and getting a nice bit of outside time. i usually bring an enchanted mp3 player so i don't have to bring any electronics with me lol

otherwise, i just like popping in and visiting my friends where they live. i think i visit remus the most (mainly bc we're bffs but also his family is so sweet (his younger sister adores me, i'm like her idol or smth lol)) but i go see james specifically a lot too. (euphemia hooks me up w some of the best food i've ever had in my entire life LMFAO) my friends obviously come and visit me too, so it's not like i'm the one travelling to them 24/7, but it is a really fun activity to just go floo-ing around the greater UK area lol

*kim crawford dance* THIS MY JAM!!!!!! the little collage i made above is pretty much the vibe for my summer clothing! i'm ngl, i dress pretty much the same every single season, just varying amounts of skin showing 😭😭 i'm a metamorphagus as well, so i change my hair color based on whatever i'm wearing that day too. i normally stick to those same pastels & everything, and of course the vibe is pastel mermaid princess, so my hair is either the typical pastel pink (what i make my 'default') OR a bright blonde with streaks of whatever color i'm wearing that day (usually pink, purple, or blue streaks!) which i think is super fun.

jewelry wise, i stick to the same jewelry i wear all year (i have a heart-shaped locket necklace from my parents that has a photo of me and my family & a photo of my nuna and bamp (my grandparents) and another necklace that has a sea star pendant from my mom. i wear a crap ton of rings, with various jewels and things and a few separate bracelets, including a charm bracelet with a charm for each year i complete of school, which is super fun. kind-of pjo vibes a bit?) BUT! i wear a lot of arm cuffs? i think they look super cool, and it kind of adds to the whole beach-y vibe. it's kind of ironic that my ass lives in (lowkey) dreary belfast, ireland, but it's alright!!! i travel a bunch!!!

It’s a hot, humid day, mid summer in Japan tends to be like this. You and your friends had been kicking it back in your rental with its working but shitty AC but the heat got to you all. With brilliance someone suggested heading out into Tokyo for some ice cream and trying snacks and foods from stalls, going shopping! Excitedly everyone agreed and was dressing to go.

You were honestly pretty excited, you’d practiced and learned Japanese for this vacation but haven’t really gotten to flex it yet. Not only that but of course shopping and getting cold treats sounded amazing! Getting to ride the train in and see all the sights, it wasn’t something you got to do to often or at all back home but the train was necessary here!

With everyone dressed, you’ve chosen some casual shorts and a graphic tee with “I <3 Japan” on it because that’d be funny. Your friends give a laugh about it and so do you, walkin to the station and finally getting on the train. Everyone was planning what they’d get and you’re thinking vanilla and something else.

Off the train and out into the streets you look on your phone as you walk trying to search and find a good spot to go too. Your other friend is searching in English and you’re searching in Japanese to widen your scope of places to go. Finally everyone settles on one in a ped-mall near a museum, cause hey you might go to the museum after you all eat!

The shop is cold and refreshing, but somewhat packed as most people had the same idea today. To save space only two of the group stay at the counter to order having taken yours and the others orders. The rest of you sat by the front window waiting and chatting.

You glance out the window, watching the different faces roll by, some occasionally stopping to talk to someone or answer their phone’s. Most people dressed relatively similarly, something casual and fun, but one person caught your eye. Well it was easy to spot him, he’s so tall and has grayish blueish white hair past his shoulders.

Whatever he’s wearing at this distance it looks like a black bag he’s cut holes into and stitched in places, with black skinny jeans. You can’t see his shoes as there’s too many people but you can see his face! He has stitch patterns across it, two different color eyes, and a lazy disinterested smile on his face as he watches people move around him. You’re not sure if this is a cosplayer or one of the fashions of Harujuku, either way though he looks cool!

Mahito stands, his gaze slowly rolling over the sea of stupid humans that mingle below him. It was funny honestly seeing how none of them could see him, how he could just lean right in their faces and they wouldn’t even blink. Non-sorcerers filled the streets and despite how many people there are there were so few who could actually even see him.

Here he was though, standing and waiting around in case some sorcerer did come along! Apparently this little no name museum has a fun grade-2 cursed object in it that Jogo really wants, so Mahito is on the lookout while Jogo goes and gets it. It’s just some Spider figurine that makes a green glowing sticky string that’s really hard to get off, easy to break though.

Mahito thinks the object is dumb, but not Jogo. After all, Jogo is very smart and honestly very creative with how he uses his cursed tools. Sometimes when Mahito watches Jogo theorize and ramble about the tools and objects it almost makes himself want to try and use them too, but he prefers his transfigured humans!

Mahito wonders what use this could- wait.

His eyes look up from the people and drag across everyone trying to spot who it was. He could feel eyes, looking at him. A sorcerer perhaps or maybe just a window even?

He can’t sense where they are, they must have glasses or something obscuring direct vision of him. He’d move to hunt them down, but he hears the amused and prideful chuckles of Jogo approaching first. With a smile he turns and leans on his hips, “We’ve been spotted Jogo! Let’s get out of here!”

Ice cream in hand you step out with the others and look back to where that guy was, he seems to be talking to someone now, but you can’t see who. You lift your phone to try and snag a photo, but when you look he’s not there on camera. Your brows furrow and try to re-angle your camera but still nothing, so you look to see if he’s still there.

He is certainly still there, and he’s certainly staring right at you now too. You look away embarrassed you were caught, it’s super rude to take photos of people without permission but also you wanted to see if anyone knew the cosplay! Then again you guess you could’ve just looked up the character description instead of taking a photo of a stranger.

Running always works.

It worked that time you wore a backless dress to dinner with the gang. A reunion of sorts when he and Tendou came back from Europe for the week between Christmas and New Years. The curve of your spine in the candlelight as you shrugged your coat from your shoulders did something strange to his stomach, leaving him unusually distracted, eyes constantly finding yours across the table despite the chatter of others.

He’d excused himself after dinner, refusing round two at the karaoke bar, his excuse a stomach ache. When he woke the next morning in his old bedroom he knew otherwise.

So, he ran.

It also worked a few weeks later when his busy, busy mind found your social media account. When his eyes unashamedly roamed all over everything you shared, scrolling relentlessly through days, and weeks, and months— then he’d been stupid and fumbled his phone, the device slipping from his fingers. Upon catching it, he’d spotted a red heart indicating he’d liked the post.

From eight months ago.

He threw on his joggers and ran.

More recently it worked a week ago, when he was again back home, this time for the Olympic Games. Somehow you’d gotten his number, and after short correspondence, decided on a dinner date; just the two of you.

The notion sent Japan’s Canon into a spiral of sorts. Kageyama’s advice was sound, but baseless (“This is what I would do,” “But you’ve never dated”). Strangely enough, it was Atsumu who calmed Ushijima’s woes.

“You just need the four C’s,” he’d explained, wrapping an arm over the bigger man’s shoulders. “A car, cologne, a credit card, and condoms.”

“Miya!” Sakusa scolded, swatting him away from Ushijima with a glare hot enough to melt steel.

Wakatoshi thought on it. He thought on it so hard, he scored a volleyball to the face.

So he ran.

It’s working now, a week on from that life changing conversation. Battered ASICS pound the cement as the sun threatens to spill over the mountains in the distance. It’s still cool in the mornings even though it’s summer, but his tee is drenched through with sweat.

As he slows, breath evening out, he sees you standing out at your letterbox in a silken robe that barely reaches you knees and he thinks he should turn around and keep running, but you look up and he can’t not go to you. Your hair’s a mess, face bare, and you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen, and his heart picks up alarmingly fast.

“Thought you dined and dashed,” you say, small pout on your face. “Seems like you just needed to keep your routine.”

“Sometimes, I… I just need to run.” He admits, not lying. He’d never like to you.

You turn, sauntering back up to your front door, slides scuffing the pavement. “Maybe you shoulda just woke me up? I can get your heart racing.”

He follows you, completely enchanted as you walk into your house, and the robe drops from your shoulders just like your coat did at the restaurant.

This time— he’s sure— running won’t work.

When buying clothes, consider if you can see yourself wearing them in 5 years. Or more. And when going through your wardrobe, ask yourself, is this an item I would replace if it was lost or damaged?

For this particular fit, the loafers are 10 year old Alden LHS. I wear them every summer, they’re light and have the perfect shade of suede. I would want to replace them for sure if I lost them, but at the prices Alden is currently charging, it’s gonna hurt. Maybe I’d get a pair of Crockett & Jones Harvard in stead.

As for the rest of the fit, the overshirt by Asket I bought when it first came out in 2020, and it’s been one of my casual wear staples. The tee by Asket as well, I have bought a dozen in all colors over the years, and never bothered to find another maker since these are pretty much perfect.

The jeans in ecru are new. I had white jeans before but the cut didn’t work for me anymore. These are from Arket and I mainly bought them cause they were relatively affordable, but if I’d need to replace them at some point, I’d probably go for a different brand. Something made in Japan likely.

warnings: tooth achingly sweet fluff, domestic!matty, them being heckin adorable. Enjoy!

“Matty, put down the camera for two seconds and look around you! We are in the most beautiful city in the world with some of the best art in the world. The land of Pablo Picasso, Antoni Tapies, Manolo Valdes and Joan Miro!” Nora, clearly, was elated to be on their honeymoon. Matty and her had thrown around ideas for the trip for a full 3 months before making a decision: Rome, Paris, Greece, Australia, Japan, Amalfi Coast, Ireland, Miami… until they landed on Spain. It then took another two weeks to narrow that down to Barcelona and come up with an itinerary and to-do list. La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, The Picasso Museum, La Boqueria all being Nora’s picks. Matty decided on a sunset walk on La Rambla, the aforementioned Fundacio Joan Miro, Parc de la Ciutadella, and going to see a FC Barcelona game at Camp Nou. At every art museum, Matty would make the comment that Nora’s art was leagues better while she wandered around in awe - it never failed to make her giggle and blush.

The pair had been running around for a week or so now, Matty taking every opportunity to photograph Nora at their various stops and compliment her outfits and hype her up a bit. His favorite of these photos was taken at a secluded quiet beach they had found one afternoon, and it was like something out of Baywatch. Nora, in all her bikini-clad glory coming out of the crystal blue water. He thought his heart stopped at that moment and almost dialed for an ambulance. How was he this lucky? Not even in his dreams did he imagine this perfect of a wife, of a vacation, of a life. He was brought back to reality by her waving a hand in front of his face and giggling at him. “Like the bathing suit, Handsome?”

“O-oh god yes, Honey. You look positively drool-worthy in it.” He stuttered.

They took another dip in the water, dried off and changed into their walking clothes. She had gotten the most beautiful white sundress for the trip, lacey and delicate. Matty was in his summer uniform of a tee shirt, some sort of dress pants or jeans and sneakers. He currently was wearing Nora’s favorite of his to steal: it was a white shirt that had “I’m a little devil from Niagara Falls, Canada” written across the chest with a little cartoon. It had been put through the wash so many times now that the collar was starting to get loose and holes dotted the hems. The comforting shirt also allowed for his arm tattoos to be out on display, Nora was going a bit insane ogling them as they walked holding hands. Deciding they both needed to cool down a bit after being in the blazing spanish sun all day, they stopped for some shaved ice and coconut water.

That night for dinner, they went to a tapas bar and drank red wine like it was water. They sat in a quiet corner of the restaurant and giggled away as they recalled the early days of the relationship and their trips to London and New York to visit each other - always greeting the other with a ridiculous sign and flowers at the arrivals gate. The band in the bar was playing some Pete Rodriguez and basa nova as the two spent what felt like an eternity talking.

“You know, I have that Mets hat framed somewhere in storage from your first trip to London… kept it all these years later.” He confesses bashfully, half drunk.

“Well, good thing I still buy that candle from the time you came to New York for my birthday.” She reciprocates. The idea of the other keeping mementos of each other and their early love is enough to make them cry.

“Okay, before we get too emotional here, wanna go back to the hotel, Handsome?”

“I’d love nothing more, Honey.”

When they stumble back into their room, Nora runs for the closet where she was keeping his surprise wedding present. Matty was fixing them both glasses of kalimochos - red wine and coke from when they met, still being their drink of choice.

She grabs the guitar case and walks back to the small suite’s living room. “My love, come here for a minute… got something for you!” Nora’s voice rings as she calls him over.

“One second, Darling… just gotta grab something as well.” A devious giggle follows. He walks to their bedroom and grabs a neatly folded printed receipt from the side table.

“Alright, buttercup… let’s see what you’ve got.” She unsuccessfully hides the guitar case behind her back and giggles when she pulls it from him as he makes a reach for it. “C’mon don’t tease, baby. Lemme see what you’ve got in that… I wonder what it could be.” His eyes glimmer in the light and a smirk falls on his stupidly perfect lips.

“Here you go, baby… Had the hotel people drop it off while we were at the beach earlier.” She holds out the case and he gives her a wink as he grabs it. Opening it quickly, his face drops. Within it is a beautiful black Spanish guitar with cowboys sitting around a fire carved into it and “Singin’ Cowboys” engraved and covered with red paint. Matty’s heart stops and his eyes mist over. It is the most stunning, well-crafted instrument he’s ever held in his own hands. He takes it out and begins to play the start of “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls and his stomach sinks - it sounds even prettier than he could’ve imagined.

“My love… this is the greatest gift anyones ever gotten me. I love it so much, gonna treasure it for the rest of my life. I love you, baby… so so much.” He tells her as he looks up at the angel before him. How could she possibly be real? He wipes some tears from his eyes and kisses her with such tenderness and warmth that it takes her back a bit and knocks the wind out of her. When they disconnect for air, she holds his face for a moment before kissing his forehead. “My sweet boy.” She whispers.

“My sweet girl.” He kisses her nose and taps it quickly. “Now, beloved, here is yours. I couldn’t physically get it here because it’s being shipped to New York currently, but I made sure to print out the order and a copy of it to give to you while we were here.” He nervously twists his rings around his finger… a habit he’s picked up since their New York wedding months ago.

“Oh, please Matty you didn’t have - oh holy shit… is- is this real?” She quickly asks, reading the paper over and over again to verify its real. An authentic Antoni Tàpies, one she’s always dreamt of since she learned about Spanish art in high school. She must’ve told Matty a hundred times about the art in Barcelona and all her favorite artists in Spain.

“Very real, baby… Hopefully you like that specific piece. I thought it had a cool energy to it and matched some of your work. What with the the hands and semi-heart above them.. Plus it’s from the 60s which I remember you always saying was one of your favorite decades in art!” He scratches the back of his neck as he rambles and tries to remember what she’s told him over the years and the information the seller gave him.

“Matty… Les Mains is one of my favorite pieces of art like ever… You’re insane oh my god! I love you and thank you thank you thank you, Handsome!!” She runs into his arms, still clutching the piece of paper in her hand. She knocks him back at first from the force of the hug, but quickly his arms wrap around her waist and he kisses her head.

“Love you too, baby. Can’t believe I am lucky enough to spoil you for the rest of my life and have you forever.”

“Me neither, Handsome.. and for the record, having you as my husband is the greatest gift I will ever receive.”

“Couldn’t agree more, Wife.” He kisses her again and in that moment it feels like time and the world ceases to exist. Just him and Nora in Barcelona… husband and wife.

Cities/Countries that I think should host upcoming Olympics and why:

1. Havana, Cuba: Over the course of several decades, Cuba has proven itself to be one of the most resilient and resolute nations on the planet. Withstanding the weight of global repression and economic embargoes, Cuba has emerged as a social and cultural hub with a growing reputation for medical breakthroughs and excellence. No one who matters cares about the Cold War bogeyman-ification of Cuba anymore, and it will be very funny to see those who do still care work themselves into a frothing hysteria.

2. San Jose, Costa Rica: As far as I'm personally aware, Costa Rica has the economic and infrastructural capacity to host an event like the Olympics. More importantly, Costa Rica's national initiatives to preserve and restore its unique ecosystems deserves to be celebrated on a international stage. It would be fascinating to see how San Jose could host an international event as sustainably as possible. Also, the Olympics should be held in as many countries near or under the Equator as possible before climate change makes a lot of places difficult to inhabit.

3. Johannesburg, South Africa: I chose Johannesburg because I think their economy/infrastructure is most capable, but just somewhere in Africa yo! Get the Olympics out of Europe and North America! Boring! I want to see dashikis, kente cloth, pyramids and elephants!

4. Sapporo, Japan: I just really think Japan deserves a do-over because the 2020 Olympics were fated to be a bust. Hosting the Winter Olympics in Hokkaido would be great! Have you seen pictures of the snowfall there? And Japan is making some incremental steps to recognize and revive Ainu culture, so this would be a great way to showcase that. Get the weebs interested with references to Golden Kamuy lol.

5. Helsinki, Finland: I recently read that a lot of Europeans are changing their summer vacation destination to Scandinavia because of climate change causing oppressive heatwaves elsewhere. So Finland would be more environmentally hospitable for more people, it'd be a great place for winter sports, and they could show off why they're consistently considered one of the happiest countries on the planet. Also, Moomins. Also also, the name of the capital would outrage a lot of usamerican fundies, which is always a good thing.

6. Istanbul, Türkiye: I admit that I don't know much about the socio-political or economic situation in Türkiye, but I think that in the age of memes as a significant means of communication, the country that generates the most memes during the current Olympics should host the next one. It is surreal to see how many people suddenly care about Olympic shooting competitions, and Turkish Shooter Guy is behind most of that. Also maybe this could be an opportunity for everyone to learn how to properly spell/pronounce Türkiye. Also it would probably anger a lot of conservative Europeans. Tee hee.

I was going to suggest Lhasa, Tibet, but they're not big on tourists anymore for justifiable reasons. I just wanted to anger the Chinese government. If Ireland actually reunites soon they should host the Olympics in the newly reunited Ireland. That would be beautiful.

History:

Born as the eldest child to her parents, with Yugi following after two years. Her father disappeared from their life not long after her brother was born and she doesn't have any real memory of him and is happy enough not needing to seek him out.

Grew up with a group of friends very dear to her and she developed deep bonds with and are the exact reason Yugi craves that connection with people; he saw the example from her.

Their mother passed away when Nana was eight and Yugi was six, leading to them living with their grandparents at the game shop full time; they'd been helping watch after them since they were little after all.

Yugi finds the Puzzle a year afterwards and while Nana tried solving it herself, found it was better to let Yugi try (mostly because she got frustrated)

Started up college not long before the first fic and is excited to become a therapist so she can help others!

Debana — Judo fiction writing —

To be honest, I never really thought of myself as a great fighter. It’s a February evening in the cafe where all the fighters go to recuperate, especially after fights.

“Two days before the comp, eh? Thursdays are usually cursed tee bee aych,” Aeri chortles out. “You’re lucky you still have a few days to prepare, princess.” Aeri is my friend I made during training. She’s a belt behind me, orange/green, but we are usually stuck with each other because we are the same size. I shift my position, raising my eyebrow that hasn’t been plucked.

“You know we aren’t texting…this is in real life…why did you say “tee bee aych,” I say as I make an exaggerated look. “…And I’m not your princess.”

“Girl, you know I’m too lazy to speak sometimes, don’t judge.” She says with her raspberry lips. “You will always be my princess."

Ever since I started judo three years ago, my dream has been to get gold at a competition. Kids at my old school would make fun of me for not being competitive enough to fight–That I would be too empathetic to aid my desire to win. Since then, I have kept envisioning myself in the blaring fluorescents, on a brightly colored mat, walking the tightrope of uncertainty. I envision all my teammates yelling at me to keep going, to be stronger. My senses flood like opening gates when I think about the smile he would paint on his face. A smile that could cause an earthquake in my organs. It would be so large I’d get lost in it. The big competition day is creeping up on my team. We are all sweaty with messed up gis on a late summer evening.

“Fix your posture!” My coach explained to me. I wince at the armbar. Shuffling around, breaking grips just for them to be reattached, I can hear my heartbeat. My lungs let seas flow into them, and all I can hear is my coach yelling at me to keep going. To hold on even if it hurts like being dumped into a river rapid. keep the grip break the grip swoop under turn swivel pick up…

A few months ago, me and my best friend Aeri just started our Junior year of highschool. Aeri got to skip a grade since her family moved here from Japan, and we met from practice. Today, my mind looks like a painting that was painted over so many times to the point of it being so thick you can’t even tell what’s on it anymore. A sludge of failed ambition.

It is overcast, forty years must have passed. Something about boba, a dojo, a competition, smudged eyeliner, messed up nail polish, matcha, blah, blah, blah-

“Winter? Winter? Earth to Winter?”

I shift my position. “Must have been daydreaming or something…”

Aeri smiles, looks me up and down, then raises her eyebrow. “Ha, you’re good. I've probably done the same thing,” She continues. “As I was saying, are you down to go practice at the dojo that just recently opened at the gym?” She says. “I got excited….and kind of forgot you have your…things.”

“My things?” I scoff, picking at my nails. “Sure, find me there at 8?”

I have always expressed my love for the season of winter. The vibes, the long nights, no obligations to go sweat buckets outside. Just pure bliss. Aeri is probably the only person who knows and understands why I act the way I do. Without her, I probably would never smile.

I shove my key into the ignition lock and plop my hands on the steering wheel, fulfilling my promise I made to Aeri.

“Winter?” I hear a voice say.

I flash my eyes towards the noise. “Mhm?” I try to be quiet to not disturb the other people practicing.

“You dropped this.”

As I look at my belt in someone else’s hand, I panic. This isn’t Aeri. I rarely talk to other people, but especially not to the opposite gender. I look down, sweating, my breaths shortening.

“Thanks,” I say with a shaky, unsteady voice. Then it dawns on me. Nobody knows my nickname except Aeri…

I take a deep breath that hitches at the end. This unidentified fellow judoka is probably expecting me to keep on walking. He makes a step to my left when I raise my voice and widen my dark brown eyes. “How do you know my name…my nickname?”

The unidentified man falters. He looks up to meet my gaze. He sharply inhales; it sounds almost like he cut through his lungs with a kitchen knife. It's almost like the Mediterranean sea full of words bubbles up in his throat. Scratching the back of his head, full of dark brown hair, he stalls even more.

He drops his belt now, and my jaw tightens, eyes focused on a faraway window.

“I don’t think you should know,” he finally admits, shifting his weight from each of his feet. “At least…not right now.”

“But why?” I ask him, a growing pain in my knees.

“You just…don’t.”

“Why don’t you just answer the question? I have this right, you know?”

“Okay, then,” he says. “Are you fighting in the competition this Saturday?”

I gulp. “Yeah…”

He grins. Just a little. “Meet me 2 hours before the competition on Saturday, February 26th, and I’ll tell you.”

I hesitate. Physically. I stare at his shirt for a while, trying to weigh the possible danger I’m putting myself in. I’ll make sure to have Aeri by my side.

“Deal. Sure, whatever.”

Unidentified man turned his small grin into a big one. No clue why. I try to hide my troubled expression.

“See you then,” he says, and bolts off, forgetting his belt on the ground.

“Hey, you forgot your belt!” I say in a voice louder than I expected.

He turns around and runs back, picks the belt up that was at my feet, says a quick, nearly indecipherable ‘thank you’, and runs off into the locker rooms.

My gloomy, dark palette washes over me like overflowing watercolors.

Since I was young, fights have been daunting to me. The pressure and anxiety that bred from the expectation to win were why I opted out of competitions.–They’re like this rope I can’t reach…this parallel I can’t intersect. I’ve gone up three and a half belt ranks over these years. Congratulations she said, but I wasn’t feeling congratulations worthy, I guess. I was awarded a green/blue belt, which feels like a belt that only super advanced students can rank to, but me? The competition date was just a few hours away, and all that has been rampaging my mind is where Aeri disappeared. I never completed my practice on that day. I step forward and backward, frantically shifting my position on the damp street. I pour my lungs’ contents into the air, eyes crimson.

“Aeri, where did you go?” I yell, over and over. I hope nobody is out on these avenues. The knot in my chest is tightening more as if there was a master bracelet maker in my heart. Woven threads tangle themselves into my garden, poisoning my crops.

“The competition is more important!”

“The competition is more important!” he shouts.

“Who are you? What is your name?” I frantically whirl around like a distressed gust of leaves.

He exhales. “My name?”

I raise my eyebrow at the way he made his conjunction sound like a question. “Yes.”

“My name is Akil.” He looks at me as if I have neon green skin. “I’m Reis’ brother. Now, the competition preparations are in 30 minutes, so you should probably start thinking about coming inside.”

I enter a tunnel and come through the other end before answering him. “Oh, okay, smarty pants.” My eyes droop low, my mouth forming a line.

He raises his eyebrow and places his hand on his hip. “By the way, my names Akil, not ‘smarty pants.’”

I walk into the competition hall, belt wrapped around my neck, and my skin goes pale. You could fit a small town into this space. I hesitantly check myself into the preparation room, and am met by 30 other competitors, give or take. I throw my bag into the unidentified pile of black, and slowly walk towards my teammates with a bead of sweat dripping down my forehead..

‘Where’s Aeri?” I ask one of my teammates, Nezira.

“Oh, I haven’t seen her in a few weeks…I assumed she was calling out sick.” She says with a flat expression. “You should be conditioning with us though, they’re gonna start calling us out to get paired up.”

I forge up a reply, exhaling and inhaling sporadically. “Alright.”

Belt tied, socks off. Seconds feel like years. It’s almost my turn, and I’m tracing the shapes of my hands. I was so distracted with finding Aeri that I barely used enough time for conditioning, and it will show once I step onto that squishy, slightly torn mat. I’m drowned, drowned in my sweat and the weight forced on my organs.

One more minute…

My name appears on the big screen next to my partner. It reads AERI vs REIS

My mind becomes paralyzed, and time stops.

That’s him. He’s a boy.

I look over to Nezira with wide eyes. “I thought they only paired girls with girls? Was I mistaken?”

Nezira scoffs, the noises around us blaring. “You don’t know?”

“Know what?” My heartbeat is slamming against my chest.

“They changed the policy. That rule became void last week…If you actually came to practice, you’d be up to date.” She says while picking at her nails, a smirk creeping at the tips of her mouth. “Now, go! You only have 30 seconds!”

I get to my wobbly feet and rush down the steps wildly, nearly tripping over myself multiple times. This is actually happening, and I only have one chance to win.

I see him. Reis. The crowd cheers so loud my ear drums crowd with adrenaline. All I can hear are my short, unstable breaths. He steps closer, and holds out his hand. I shake it, my stomach is upside down, the walls have flipped, and the lights turn into shadows. My feet turn into paint brushes, stroking a canvas below. My feet dance, then become brooms. Dust clouds us, blaketing my compass. As generations pass, the fight comes to a quick end as if it was a fleeting moment. My face flushes red, tears flowing down my cheeks.

My senses black out completely, and the last thing I remember is the sensation of his almost black eyes ripping their way into mine, pulling me into this spiral of blooming flowers and my heart pings with an indescribable feeling.

The next thing I know, people are screaming, cheering, clapping, or a mixture of all. My experiences blend together, and I’m a bird on a branch. The strongest bird. The bravest.

I’m eaten by a squirrel.
