“I think we got everything,” you haul up the reusable grocery bag on your shoulder. 

“It’s going to be awesome,” Claire smiles back at you, “lowkey.”

“Did you hear back from Janie yet? I got the special oat milk she wanted.”

“Um, not yet. She wasn’t sure if she was chilling with us or–

“Huh, yeah, I mean, no worries,” you shrug it off. “Not all of us are cool enough to go to the shore.”

“Who wants to?” Claire wrinkles her nose, “just a bunch of drunk idiots with nothing better to do.”

“Isn’t that what college is?” You chuckle.

She hums in agreement. Neither of you have been a part of the popular crowd. You barely qualify for kook status and in your experience, Pogues are a lot nicer. It’s like walking a tightrope between them; not rich enough to skip college, and not poor enough to hang at the banks.

“I swear I saw one of my professors at the frat,” you lower your voice and giggle, “do you think they ever grow out of it?”

“Not if they can help it,” she rolls her eyes.

You chuckle and carry on. The weight of your snacks is heavier by the step. You should’ve just taken your mother’s Volvo but the walk isn’t that long and you hate to waste the gas. As you come up the incline of your street, you hear a motor rev, followed by a whistle.

“Hey, kitty, kitty,” a voice hollers and as you look back and egg cracks across your face. The shatter is painful as the shell breaks and the yolks leaks down your cheek and chin. 

“Look at that wet pussy!” Another voice calls as the truck chortles and veers off. You sputter and swipe the egg from your face, holding back a sob. You cradle your cheek at the tingling there. Ow.

“Fucking jackasses!” Claire cries out, “god! Go back to high school!” She hollers through cupped hands. She turns back to you and gasps, “oh my god, are you okay?”

“Yeah, yeah, it’s fine,” you sniff, “I’m fine. Just egg, right?”

“I can’t believe that,” she sneers as she pulls down her sleeve and wipes your face with it, “talk about never growing up.”

“Really, it’s okay,” you adjust the bag on your shoulder and reach to take off the cat ears you picked up from the grocery store as a joke. “I’m okay.”

“It’s not okay,” she grabs the headband from you, “don’t let them ruin the fun.”

She puts them back on your head and glares up the street. She huffs and shakes her head as she grabs your hands and hurries you along. You seal your lips and blink through the swell, you’re not going to cry. High school is over, you’re an adult.

Janie doesn’t turn up but Adelyn does. The three of you have a quaint Halloween planned. Hot drinks and horror movies, who could ask for more?

You make a mess of the kitchen with whipped cream and sprinkles before you crowd onto the couch under a shared blanket in the dark. The titles for the first Halloween play as the music sets a frightening ambience. You sip from your stacked apple cider as Claire licks cream from her fingers as it rips from the brim of her cocoa.

Adelyn turns to lean against the armrest and stretches her legs over Claire’s lap. You sink back into the cushy couch, transfixed by the classic film. You haven’t seen it in years so it’s like watching it all over again. The eerie soundtracks and jarring noises put you on edge and you sit up, leaning in as you expect Michael to pop out at any moment.

You hear a thump and look around. You can’t see much, the curtains are drawn and the screen doesn’t offer much illumination. It’s just the movie. That surround sound always confuses you. Besides, Claire and Adelyn aren’t bothered.

You lean forward and put down your sticky cup. The others are pretty much done too. You cross your arms and nestle into the side of the couch. The music turns frantic as Michael closes in on his next victim. You hold your breath…

“Boo!” The voice is right behind you.

Claire screams and throws her hands up. You look over as a shadow bends over her, grabbing her by the neck and dragging her over the back. What the fuck–

Your hair is clamped in someone’s hand as you’re wrenched against the side of the couch. You shriek as the speaker volume amps up, muffling out the real life terror. Adelyn whimpers as she hits the floor in front of the couch and tries to scramble away.

“Hey Claire Bear,” you recognise the voice as the screen glares off Topper’s features, “happy halloween.”

“Let go!” You hiss and kick out as your feet hit the floor, “get off–”

“Kitty, kitty,” Rafe’s snarls in your ear as his breath grazes against your skin, “I’ve been dying to get my hands on you.”

You can’t believe what’s happening. Your personal tormentor has you locked in his grip. Your face stings with the memory of the shattered egg, the cool drizzle of yolk down your cheek. You shiver and grasp blindly at his hands.

“What are you– why are you doing this?” You gulp out.

Adelyn is dragged under Kelce as he straddles her, groping her as the screen flickers over them. Rafe’s other arm hooks around your waist and he pulls you with him as he backs away. You flaily wildly, head stuck as he keeps his hand tight around your hair.

“Trick or treat,” he growls.

Claire screams and you hear a clatter. You don’t understand. Rafe Cameron hates your guts. He pushed your books on the floor, he shoved you in lockers, he spit on your graduation robes. He’s a monster but not the one you expected that night.

“I got both, don’t worry,” he rasps as he hurls you against a wall.

“Please,” you slide down to your knee, paralysed by the impact, “please, I didn’t do anything–”

“That doesn’t matter,” his shadow looms over you, “cause I’m about to do a whole lot of something.”

He bends over you as you shield yourself with an arm. He pushes it aside and frames your jaw, pulling your head up. He leans in as the surround sound bursts with noise, the metallic shink of stabbing and horrid screams.

“Let’s play a game, kitty,” he runs his finger along your chin, “hide and seek…” he draws his hand away, “I’ll count to ten and you can hide. Then I’ll come find you…”

“Please,” you sniffle.

“One,” he stands over you, “two…”

You put one foot down, shaking as you fight to get the other under you.

“Three,” you stand and stagger around blindly in the dark, “four,” you feel your way into the next room, “five…” you hit a table, sending a vase to the floor, “six…,” you get to the bottom of the stairs, “seven…” you hesitate and turn to face the front door. “Eight…” you stumble towards your escape, “nine…” hand on the knob, “ten.”

The door opens and you dash out. Three steps before you yanked back. You whimper as the door slams shut just as quickly, kicked by your accoster.

Rafe’s arm hooks around your neck and he pulls you back. He chuckles as he hauls you with him, dragging you to the stairs, your feet bouncing off each step as he ascends a step at a time.

“Not fast enough, kitty,” he taunts, “I choose…” his other hand crawls down your stomach and cups your cunt as he reaches the landing “treat.”

If you don't see a name you submitted here, it's because most or all of their career was as a child/they were too young for the cutoff, their career was almost entirely after 1979, or music was something they only dabbled in and are hardly known for. There are quite a few ladies on the list whose primary career wasn't "recording artist" or "live musician," but released several albums or were in musical theater, so they've been accepted.

Summary: there is a new student in school and everyone seems to love her

Janis was enjoying her Wednesday, it was normal like every other she had her art period, biochem and math —okay the math part was less joyful but she was able to she a friend of hers. She currently found herself at lunch, having just sat down and now leaning against her girlfriend who was rubbing little patterns into her thing while eating her cheese fries.

Their friend group was quietly chatting, Janis did not feel like listening since it was nothing to important to be listening.

The brunette was starting to drift off into a soft slumber, when she felt Regina shift under her head and seconds later Cadys voice, telling them about her new friend. Janis opened her eyes and looked up just to be meet with a way to exited Cady and next to her a tall brunette.

“Everyone this Claire, she is in my AP calc class,” Cady was a moment away from vibrating from excitement. Damian was the first to speak, introducing himself the rest follow. Janis could feel Regina pushing her away slightly, first she shook Janis off her shoulder then she moved her hand away from the smaller woman’s leg and all in all she pushed Janis an inch or two away from her, just to the introduce herself. Janis eyebrows furrowed in confusion, Regina barely acted this way and if she did there would be at least something touching just to reassure Janis every thing was fine. But right now it did not seem like Regina did it by accident. The blonde straightened her back and smiled at Claire, it was not the smile she would give Janis but it was still big and showed off her dimples.

When Janis wanted to speak up, Damian stepped in “Soooo, Claire what do you do? How come you are at this school you seem new!” Claire shit her a tight lipped smile and went to answer the mans questions.

“Well I am new here I previous was at western high but wanted to transfer because the math and art Programm is better at north shore. Which leads to what I do. I sketch every now and then and I ride horses!” Janis perked up at the word sketch but the sulked back into her seat when Claire mentioned riding, Janis did not mind that the girl rode horses, it just made her even more perfect and the fact that her own friends and especially girlfriend were fanning over her did not help. “Janis dread as well,” Gretchen threw in. “Really that’s so cool, Mandy we will see each other in art,” Claire smiled revealing her perfect with teeth, Janis just nodded not daring herself to smile suddenly insecure about her teeth.

“Claire do you have a picture of something you drew,” Cady smiled still way to exited about this for Janis’s liking.

The tall brunette nodded and toke her phone out and show some pictures.

“Wow, Janis this is like wayyy better than any of your art, it does seem like the only good thing you can do is light a fire,” Damian laughed and Janis felt something in her gut clench, why the fuck would he say something like that, the rest of the table laughed as well and Janis suddenly felt very out off place.

Lunch went by the same and Janis just wanted for it to end. Math was good she was happy that she got once understood, she was optimistic about her afternoon since Regina and her would meet up and spent some time together, so when she stepped out of the school she was surprised that Regina was not in sight and with that her car. Janis waited for some time thinking that maybe Regina’s class was running late or she was dropping their friends off and then returning to pick up Janis.

Regina never came, Janis made her way home, she checkt her phone just to see no notifications, besides one from her mother telling her she would not becoming home till late at night. Janis thought about texting Regina about whether or not their were still on for later. She decided she would do it when she go home.

By then she still hadn’t heard anything from Regina or her other friends which just made the feeling in her gut tighten.

Jay <3: hey we still up for later?

Gina baby: absolutely, why wouldn’t we be?

Jay <3: just wanted to make sure, I’m gonna get ready

Gina baby: okay, want me to pick you up?

Jay <3: no, I’m good. See you :*

The feeling eased up after she texted the blonde but she couldn’t help but still feel like something was up.

When she got to the blonds house she made sure to text Regina and the to Ring the bell.

“Why do you ring the bell as well, when I already texted you that I will be down in a sec?” Regina asked as she opened the door, kissing her girlfriend before letting her in.

“I don’t know, more fun i guess,” Janis smiled, even though she was not sure if it was a genuine smile. Regina was still being weird or at least there was some weirder tension surrounding them and it made Janis feel a little bit uncomfortable and confused.

“You want something to eat, you didn’t eat at lunch today.” Regina did not seem to pick up on the tension surrounding them, Janis nodded and they made their way to the kitchen where Regina made them some snacks, afterwards they settled n Regina’s bed. The small artist made herself comfortable, feeling some weirder need to cuddle but she did not want to seem clingy or anything like that so she waited for her blond girlfriend to initiate it.

They sat in silence while, Regina picked out a movie on her laptop.

Janis looked around the room suddenly feeling uncomfortable in the familiar surroundings, it was weird and Janis did not like it at all. It seemed to her that she was making things weird and if Regina was not picking up on the tension there probably was non.

“Jay, baby?” The soft voice of her girlfriend ripped her out of her thoughts, Janis flinched a a bit when she felt a hand on her thigh.

“Babe, are you sure everything is alright, you seem of,” there was concern lacing her voice and it made Janis feel sick first Regina was weird when Claire was introduced to them — nearly flirting with her— and then she did not wait for Janis after class ended and now Regina asked if every thing was alright.

“Why did you not wait for me after class? I came out and you were not there and your car as well,” Janis was playing with her rings, nervous tick she did not seem to be able to let go.

“Oh well, I didn’t know we were driving together after school today and besides Claire did not have a ride home so I offered.”

“Regina you drove me to school today, I thought that meant we would be driving back together as well and besides I did not have a ride home too, you know.”

“Janis it’s a god damn ride home, you don’t need to be jealous now!” Regina was getting irritated and it was confusing Janis even more, had she done something wrong.

“No, you are right. It’s silly, what do you think about Claire anyway?” Janis did not feel like fighting right now, already feeling somewhat like crying and if they would fight now it would probably lead to a panic attack.

“Claire? OMG, she is so cool and they way she is good at math and draws so well it’s amazing, she is generally so smart and have you seen her figure she has like the perfect summer body.”

Janis felt even more like crying after her parents rant about the new girl.

“Yeah she seems nice, so what do you want to watch?”

They were halfway through the movie they were watching, still not cuddling and the small brunette even felt like Regina hade moved even further away from her.

Regina was phone started to ring, Gretchen’s caller ID showing on the screen.

“Gretch, what’s up?” Regina shot Janis an apologetic look and stood up to talk to Gretchen in private.

“Yes, I like Claire she is amazing. You know if shit ever ended between Janis and I, I would most definitely take her,” Regina spike and Janis felt like she was about to throw up, it really was the only full sentence she had picked up from their conversation and it made her gut clench and tears brim her eyes.

Janis stood up packing her things to leave, before leaving a message to Regina that she had to go home because her mom wanted her to do some stuff around the house. What Janis did not know was that this would probably be the last time she would be seeing Regina outside from school.

Over the next few weeks the whole friend group would sort of ignore Janis not just in school, also she it came to the group chat and if something was written in their someone would always text that they would ask Claire if she wanted to hang out as well and if Janis would ask if someone had time to hang out it would always be `sorry Jan don’t have time’ or `maybe be another time’.

To Janis it felt the exact same way as when she had the down fall with Regina in sixth grade and her and Damian had not really been friend yet.

Her breaking point was when she had to go to the mall to get some stuff for her mom and new art supplies, she had found her friend group I couldn’t Claire in their favorite hangout spot after all of them said they had some family thing to do or needed to do stuff for school. It was when it hit her that Claire was all the things she was not. Claire was funny, did not say stupid fucking shit , she in general was incredibly smart and talented, she always knew the right thing to say. All in all Claire was tall brunette hat the most perfect body and face, she was pretty.

when the artist got home she laid in bed, she once again felt like that sixth grade kid who had just been outed in front of the whole school by her best friend and then had lit her backpack on fire.

Her mom noticed her weird behavior, the way Janis would stop doing everything except school and Training. She had stopped painting and stitching, going to gymnastics tracing instead and consternating at school more. Janis stopped talking as much as she did before and she stopped eating regularly as well sometimes going days without eating, sitting alone at lunch again or with her other friends and no one of her friends noticed her absence.

She had hopes when her birthday came around that everything would change, it did not. When the day came, her mom was away having a 48 hour shift at the hospital and non of her close friends texted or even spoke to her in weeks almost month. Jans cried feeling like it really was all her fault, that she was not as good as Claire was and that she deserved all of this. She had the urge to self harm more and more often past few days, she did not do it but she did work out even more and ate even less.

It was the day that she collapsed from exhaustion and stress, that she was able to see Regina again. Janis had collapse right after gym class, she was brought in to the nurses office and Regina was called to bring her home since Janis’s mother was not answering.

“Ms. George I suggest that you stay with her and make sure that she eats and sleeps enough. She is not hurt or anything but it seems like she hasn’t eaten in a while and sleep does also not seem like her first priority.” Regina nodded turning around to look at Janis who seemed even small now.

The care ride was silent and remained her of the way her mom had drove her home after she had lit Reginas backpack on fire, there was tension around them and it was thick. Regina did not seem mad more disappointed or annoyed that she had to drive Janis home now and then look after her and it was the exact same tension as with her mom years earlier.

Regina did not look at her once and Janis wanted her to look at her again the same way had looked at her just a few months ago ago when everything was fine and Claire was not at their school.

Janis wanted to scream and cry and hit Regina have the blonde tell her that they are fine and that she es not mad or annoyed or disappointed for not eating or sleeping, but they were not fine. Janis sat on her bet waiting for Regina to return with the food was said she was going to make.

“Eat and do not tell me you are not hungry because we both know you have not eaten in several days,” Regina’s tone was harsh Janis tried to find something soft in her words but there was none. She nodded not darting herself to speak.

Her girlfriend—Janis didn’t even know if they were still in a relationship— sat on her desk looking around the room while Janis ate. The brunettes room looked different the blond noted, more clean and less Janis that she had remembered it to be.

“Janis you want to tell me why you collapsed?”

“You already know why, so why bother asking,” her voice was horse from not speaking for a long period of time.

“Because it want to hear it from you, I want to hear from you that you started to starve yourself again or maybe I want to hear from you that this is all just a sick joke and you collapsed because you did not drink enough!”

“Fine Regina! I did not eat, I also did not sleep in days. Okay?!”

“But why Janis, Why?” Regina was begging and somewhere something in Janis’s gut clenched out of guilt.

Janis looked down at her hands not knowing what to say.

“Jay, i want to know what’s wrong so I can help you.”

“And I want you to stop pretending like we are fine, like we haven’t talked in months and none of you guys remember my birthday or incited me to any of your party’s. Regina I want you to look at me,” Tear were streaming down Janis’s face ad she tried to wipe them away not wanting regina to see them.

“Janis, what do you meant look at you? I am looking at you.”

“Yeah you are looking at me but your are looking at me the same way you are looking at ou- your friends, I want you to look at me like you still love me and tell me that I am still your girlfriend and that you are not mad at me for self harming again or thinking about committing, base none of you really care anyway. But instead you look at Claire with those eyes you look at her and a you she is all the things she is that I am not.”

“Janis, any that is not true. I am not mad at you or annoyed and least of all disappointed. I am sorry i stopped talking to you and That I stopped looking at you in general,” Regina rushed over to Janis’s bed hugging her and Janis hugged Regina so hard fear she might disappear.

“I’m sorry baby, I’m so sorry”

“It’s fine”

“No it’s not Janis, not at all. I still love you okay. Janis you really are my whole world and don’t know what I would do if you committed suicide.”

They laid down cuddling, Janis on top hugging Regina like her life depended on it.

“Stay?” She whispered in to the blonde’s neck.

“Oh my love I am not going any where any time soon.”

Nothing was fixed by then but Regina made Janis eat more and she had a word with their whole friend group about this and in the end it seemed like Claire had it all done on purpose.

one of the few good faith questions about s1 gender roles is why louis is only paralleled with white women. why does the show make him iolanta, melisande, nora helmer, etc and not claire kendry or janie crawford, characters who also appear in literature from the show's time period. why is he reading flaubert, colette, edward carpenter and not claude mckay or nella larsen who actually writes a lot about interractial relationships. on one hand the showrunner is white and maybe those are the texts he feels most comfortable with, but there are more than a few black creatives working on the show who are contributing in significant ways.

first of all, characters like iolanta, stella kowalski and nora helmer do not need to be white. they are white in their original forms because the writers were white and sometimes based them on real people. tenessee williams always wanted to have streetcar performed by diverse casts even though he based the characters partly on people in his own family. many productions now have non-white actresses in these roles (assad zaman was in one of these productions of a doll's house). also we can safely say lestat assigns melisande to louis because that's the kind of shit he's into (french opera based on a belgian story) and he's not really well read.

beyond that though, to me the reason louis is paralleled with white women is because he's married to a white man in 1910 louisiana where not only was interracial marriage illegal but homosexual relations and even interractial cohabitation were banned. but because of lestat's power, money and their vampire powers, these roles don't really apply to them. people who were in interracial or homosexual relationships in the 1910s had very different struggles and conflicts from loustat, like most of them could barely step outside without worrying about their safety. they certainly wouldn't be parading around society together all the time while even the politicians and authorities know about their relationship. so how do you make sense of your marriage if its very existence is anachronistic?? who's writing about your experiences if your experience is such an outlier in your society literally due to supernatural forces? there's no shortage of black literature in this time period (which overlaps with the harlem renaissance!) but being married to a white man is quite fundamentally different to being married to a non-white man especially in early 20th century. a white man has complete control over his dominion which includes the home and the outside world. a non-white man may have control over his home but the minute he steps out the door he's at the mercy of white men, he could be killed for simply looking at someone the wrong way, which makes non-white men impossible to relate to lestat. and who was allowed to be married to white men in those days? white women.

and ultimately louis is nora because the conflict of needing to escape an overbearing husband was something allowed only to white women in literature/theater. the reason we find so many parallels between louis and white female characters like belle even now is because his role in this story is largely reserved for white women and this has clearly ruffled a lot of feathers because its unfamiliar. i'll be curious to see what the show does as time moves forward but for season 1 it's very clear to me why the show chose these specific intertextual references.

THE BEST WRITTEN SONGS OF ALL-TIME

     Because I have zero innate musical ability, the idea that someone can sit down with a musical instrument, and create an original song out of thin air is magic to me. Songwriting is a craft, but it’s inspiration that makes a good song into a great one. There are songwriters who seem able to turn out high quality songs in perpetuity. There are others who write maybe one or two great songs, and are never heard from again. So, I made a list of what I think are the 50 best written songs I’ve ever heard. These are in no particular order. I’ve listed the title followed by the songwriter or songwriters, and in parentheses is the performer I most enjoy hearing do the song – although most of these songs have been recorded countless times by a variety of artists. You can probably find all of these on YouTube or any of the streaming services. Most have lyrics, but some do not. But, it’s hard for me to imagine any of these songs being recorded by anyone with talent, and not retaining the brilliance with which the song was written.

Explanations/Opinions below the cut:

Ok so I have several reading lists/stacks that I rotate through: my to-read spreadsheet (which has almost 300 titles listed in chronological order by date added, with the oldest being from 8/22/2014), my to-read bookcase/nightstand (which holds ~50 books I’ve acquired over the past few years but haven’t yet read), a stack of oversized unreads that don’t fit on the nightstand shelves (this gets its own list bc I need to read them and find a permanent home for them before the stack gets too tall), and “interruptions” (books that override the list order bc I didn’t want to wait to read them, for whatever reason).

Maybe it’s weird that I’m so attached to reading things “in order”? Idk. I’ve always been like this. It’s only a mild compulsion – obviously, I am perfectly capable of ignoring what’s supposed to be next on the list, in favor of reading something that catches my interest more strongly in the moment, but in general, I like to read things either in the order I added them to the list, or the order I personally acquired a physical copy (if I went by the list only, I’d be drowning in unread books [yay, college town thrift stores], so I gotta stay on top of that pile pretty regularly). So that is why I am often reading things that I first became aware of/added to my list nearly 10 years ago. Sometimes this practice results in feelings like, “Dang, I wish I would’ve actually read this 10 years ago,” but also sometimes, “WOW, I’m so glad I’m reading this RIGHT NOW, as opposed to 10 years ago when I first heard about it!”

I think my favorites this year were Mariette in Ecstasy; Other Voices, Other Rooms; Crapalachia; and Speak, Memory.

Mild disappointments were the essay collections by Leslie Jamison and Meghan Daum, two authors I’m pretty sure I discovered via popular and relateable quotes reblogged on tumblr ca. 2014, but the collections taken as a whole just had too many moments of cringe – casual classism, arrogant self-absorption, and other annoying and unrelateable qualities typical of privileged 20-something writers (this tone definitely appealed to me when I was a naïve and melodramatic snotty 20-something, so there’s that).

As a kind of memorial, Rachael and I read David’s three favorite books: The Stars My Destination, Mother Night, and American Gods. In all the time I knew him, including all the times we used to sit on the porch together, reading quietly while he drank whiskey, I never thought to ask him his favorites. I kept looking for pieces of him in the stories, wondering what lines stood out, what made a book memorable, what did it say about him that these were his favorites.

Being an elder Millennial, I’m in the stage of nostalgically re-acquiring important artifacts from my childhood, so that’s why there are some children’s books on my list. Where’s Waldo? was one of the most coveted books in my grade-school library! There was always a list of people waiting to check it out, but usually, whoever actually had the book that week would let the other kids gather around and look together.

My Heart Is a Chainsaw was a recommendation from my goth teenaged birthdaughter <3 which I probably read too much personal symbolism into but maybe not!

I thought John Updike was overrated, lol.

Favorite photography book: W. Eugene Smith’s Dream Street. His pictures made me so homesick, and it was wild because he took them from 1955-1957 but they still really, REALLY, to me, looked like the Pittsburgh of my ‘80s/’90s memories (bc Pittsburgh doesn’t change, and also the “idea” or “brand” of Pittsburgh in the ‘80s/’90s was ofc consciously referencing its industrial working-class past). He took over 10,000 photos but was never able to “finish” the project to his intense, obsessive standards of perfection (I KNOW THAT FEEL) and felt it failed to capture the multifaceted essence of the city. WELL, not in my opinion at least!

“Don't worry, Miss Morgendorffer. No other faculty members are coming.” He looked at Jane. “Other than Defoe of course. She'll be here shortly.”

“Hey, We're Mystik Spiral. But we might change our name. Welcome to my sister Janie's Sweet Sixteen Party.”

Mystik Spiral then launched into one of their older songs, confusing their audience. “Huh?” Angie asked.

“What song is this?” Brittany asked.

“I'm not sure,” Angie answered.

DeMartino followed Jane and Daria out into the yard. “I see that they haven't improved much,” he commented.

“Huh?” Daria asked.

“They sound almost exactly the way they did at school,” DeMartino answered.

“That's not surprising,” Daria commented. “Given Trent's proclivity for sleep.”

DeMartino chuckled at that.

Claire Defoe knocked on the door. Jane answered it.

Andrea heard the band start. “Of course.” She then found what she was looking for. She took the tub of paint out and put it next to Jane's easal. She then checked to make sure the closet was as she found it. She went to the window and carefully looked out. She saw Upchuck by himself next to the gazebo. 'Good.' She then looked around again. There weren't many people near him. She grabbed the tub of paint and smiled.

“There are a lot of people here,” Claire said when she entered the yard.

“Daria's concerned about it,” Jane commented.

“That's not surprising,” Claire said.

Dani Moreno looked around at the growing crowd. She knew something was going to happen. She sighed as she looked for Jane. She knew where Daria was. She knew where her brother was. (Fully lost in the music.) She then saw Jane and Ms. Defoe enter the yard. “Good.”

“Hi.”

Dani turned. “Hi...”

“Anna Coultard,” the blonde girl said as she held out her hand.

“Do you know Jane?” Dani asked.

“Not really, but I'd like to talk to her,” Anna answered. “Along with the Morgendorffers.”

“And you haven't at school?”

“Daria spends all her time with Jane, and Quinn with Sandi, Stacy and Tiffany.”

“I see,” Dani said.

“So, I'll see if I can talk to them tonight.”

Andrea came downstairs and heard another group knock on the door. 'The yard is already crowded,' she thought. She opened the door. “Jen!” she said in surprise.

“Hi!” Jen Burns said.

“There are a lot of people here,” Andrea said, knowing that Jen didn't do well in crowds.

“I knew that,” Jen admitted.

“So, you decided to come here anyway?”

“Yes.”

“Come in.”

Jen entered the room and looked around. “They're all outside?”

“Yes,” Andrea answered.

“I'll come out.”

Daria looked around. The number of people was growing. “This is getting out of control,” she said as she looked near the Gazebo to find Dani talking with a slightly familiar blonde. “I'll join them,” she decided.

“Oh, Daria's coming,” Dani said.

“I see that,” Anna said.

“Hi,” Daria said as she came up.

“How are you doing?” Dani asked, seeing that Daria seemed to be looking around stressfully.

“Better than I expected,” Daria said.

“That's good,” Anna said with a smile.

“And you are?” Daria asked.

“Anna, Anna Coultard.”

“Now I remember,” Daria murmured. “You have a reputation for smiling a lot.”

“I guesss so,” Anna murmured. “As you have a reputation for being antisocial and cutting people up for various reasons.”

“I tell it like I see it,” Daria responded. “But you'll note that I'm not doing it at the moment.”

“That's true,” Anna said. “I thought I would try to befriend Jane and yourself.”

“I'm sure you've also heard that I'm hard to befriend,” Daria said.

“Of course!” Anna responded with her usual smile.

Daria sighed.

“Not that hard,”Dani said.

“Maybe,” Daria considered.

Jen and Andrea came out into the yard. It was quite crowded, causing the former to let the latter lead the way.

Spiral began to play, starting with Mr. Normal. Most of teens started dancing.
