SEMI-TOUGH (1977) Grade: D+
Burt Reynolds has a couple good lines but for the most part its a big pass. Silly idea, w odd sequences that add much to anything. Heard the book was much different. Skip it.

I feel really bad for Nadia in this scene. Learning that your heroes are not infallible is always rough! Plus, Jeremy Whitley brilliantly lays the groundwork for Nadia’s later bout with bipolar disorder, and Janet’s words here are so powerful!
Also, I love the meta-commentary of how Nadia confirmed the truth about the time Hank Pym struck Janet via the Internet, since in real-life the Internet is primarily where Hank’s infamous reputation is the most talked about.
From The Unstoppable Wasp (2017) #8 by Jeremy Whitley, Ro Stein & Ted Brandt.

Hello! Thank you for stopping by. Two years ago I established The Daveys (they may have been The Davies back then, I don’t know), an end-of-year fake movie awards body, just because I got bored one day and was like hey, doing something like that might be fun. Last year I switched to a non-competitive format because I wasn’t really feeling it, but this year I said you know what, let’s get gifting again, and so here we are.
As always there are films that I didn’t get around to seeing, mostly due to availability, and as such they don’t feature here but possibly would’ve had I been able to see them. Likewise, there are many films that almost made their way on here but ultimately didn’t. The point is - these are all silly, really. Don’t take this seriously.
This year also sees the introduction of a special celebratory award, the Davey Award for “Wow I hadn’t seen you on screen for a while and seeing you again made me feel kind of emotional.” This year’s inaugural recipients are:
For his role in The Fabelmans, David Lynch. For her role in The Power of the Doctor, Janet Fielding. I’m sure this is the most important thing they will ever win in their lives. Congrats to them both.
A reminder: There is one winner from each category, except for the acting categories. There are two winners from those. There is also a runner up for each single-winner category. Anyway.

The Unstoppable Wasp #8
Why is Doctor Doom forgivable in Nadia’s eyes but Hank isn’t?
Tony starts two civil wars, cloned/made a Thor without the original's consent, The fucking Illuminati! And God knows what else and he's still a great hero.
The guy could have gotten help from his issues, but it was not as if Janet herself was that supportive of Hank, even taking advantage of his problems to make him marry her instead of actually trying to help him, and even then, him hitting Janet was an accident and he became so horrified immediately afterwards that he regained his sanity and save the day...from a problem he created, but still.

By order of the fookin’ PEAKY BLINDERS, it is done. It has been announced that the currently filming sixth season will be the series’ last.
Yep. No more staring into the tormented crystal blue eyes of Tommy Shelby.
With the announcement of PEAKY BLINDERS’ cancellation comes the realisation that it is the second job Finn Cole has lost in a week.
The only worthwhile thing Michael Gray has done is the French inhale.
On Thursday, TNT announced that the upcoming sixth season of ANIMAL KINGDOM will be its final season.
Finn can be currently seen in the film DREAMLAND with Margot Robbie, and will next be seen in HERE ARE THE YOUNG MEN, directed by actor Eoin Macken (The Night Shift, Merlin).
The film also stars Dean Charles Chapman (1917), Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Vikings, Sing Street) and Finn’s PEAKY BLINDERS wife Anya Taylor Joy.
Speaking of Anya Taylor Joy, she is amongst the actors nominated for a Critics Choice Award. Anya was nominated in the category of Lead Actress in a Limited Series/Made for TV Movie for Netflix’s THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT.
Her competition in that category is: Shira Haas (Unorthodox), Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America), Michaela Coel ( I May Destroy You), Daisy Edgar Jones (Normal People, Tessa Thompson (Sylvie’s Love).
The surprises to me are Nicholas Hoult being nominated in Lead Actor for a Comedy Series
amongst Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso),
S2 currently filming
Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadow), Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek), Hank Azaria (Brockmire) and Ramy Youseff (Ramy); surprised by no nomination for Elle Fanning in THE GREAT, no nomination for Ben Whishaw, Timothy Olyphant, Jack Huston or any of the female actors who gave extraordinary performances this season of FARGO (congrats to Chris Rock and Glynn Turman for their nods); no Ethan Hawke nomination for his performance in THE GOOD LORD BIRD (though his two costars received nods); Quibi dominated the short form category but no nomination for THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME which garnered Christoph Waltz an Emmy nomination or #FreeRayshawn whose two leads Laurence Fishburne and Jasmine Cephas-Jones won Emmys; the nomination for Betsy Brandt in the superb finale of SOULMATES. I did not see that coming.
The other Critics Choice nominees.

STELLA BRADY
1931
Stella Brady is a play by James Montgomery. It was originally produced by Charles Dillingham and staged by R.H. Burnside. The cast included Cesar Romero, Hilda Spong, and Janet Megrew as the title character.
Stella, a damsel of fair features and thinly-lined pocketbook, is blackmailed into doing unsavory things when she happens onto a bag full of cash. She flees to Cuba with the money and a new-found traveling companion. When a detective tracks them down in Havana, the companion confesses to losing all the money in a casino. Stella is courted by a romantic Cuban, but the detective also loves her. Who will win the heart of Stella Brady?
The title role was originally cast with Erin O’Brien Moore, but was replaced by Janet Megrew before the first performance. It was originally publicized that Montgomery would direct his own play, but staging duties were assumed by R.H. Burnside.
Newspapers reported that the play was in rehearsal at the beginning of September 1931. It was originally announced to open in Newark NJ on October 5th, but that did not come to pass. Instead it went North.
Although the play’s “premiere” was said to be in Atlantic City, it actually had a three-day try-out at the Court Square Theatre in Springfield, Mass. It was a three-day engagement starting October 5, 1931.
Stella Brady played at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City NJ on October 12, 1931. It was widely advertised as “Pre-Broadway”.
After leaving AC, the play was scheduled for a week at Brandt’s Windsor Theatre in Fordham.
RIP ~ Stella Brady died on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She was murdered by Charles Dillingham. Apparently, it was a mercy killing.
James Montgomery was the librettist for the mega-hit musical Irene, the musical for which he also wrote the original play, Irene O’Day. Apparently he had an affection for titling his plays after Irish lasses. After the death of Stella, he tried to repeat Irene’s success, by penning the book to his hit 1916 play Nothing But the Truth. The musical was titled Tell Her The Truth, and it opened on Broadway in late October 1933. It featured Margaret Dumont, the matronly foil of the Marx Brothers, and William Frawley, who is best known as Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” Although moderately successful in London, it closed after 11 performances at The Cort Theatre.
The title Stella Brady would live on in the resume of film star Cesar Romero, who grew up in another New Jersey Shore town, Bradley Beach and went to Asbury Park High School. Stella Brady was supposed to be his sophomore outing on Broadway after his 1929 debut in The Street Singer. In October 1932, a year after the death of Stella Brady, Romero returned to Broadway in Kaufman and Ferber’s Dinner at Eight. It would be his last Broadway play before Hollywood fame. His character was deleted from the 1933 film version, but is first movie The Shadow Laughs, beat Dinner at Eight to the box office by five months!
