Some more fun facts I learned from reading May We Be Spared to Meet on Earth, this time Goodsir and Fairholme edition:
Goodsir really did not like Stanley. He says about him, “… he attempts sometimes to be lofty. He sees however I don’t care much for him, so does not annoy himself.”
Goodsir did like almost all of the other officers especially Mr. Reid who he described as a “good friend.” Many of the officers helped him collect specimens and were “… very kind especially the Commander Captain FitzJames and 1st Lieutenant Mr. Gore.” Gore also drew some of the specimens for Goodsir.
Lieutenant Fairholme really loved the dog Neptune: “He is the most lovable dog I ever knew & is a general favorite. I often give him an extra kiss on William’s account, & he seems to know that it comes from a friend.” (William was his brother)
Fairholme also really liked Goodsir: “a most superior man…. & such an indefatigable naturalist & good companion that he is a great favorite with us all.”

Borealis
In 1845, two Royal Navy ships and two Aerial Corps dragon crews left England in an attempt to finally discover a navigable passage through the Arctic. In 1847, Captain James Fitzjames struggles to shield his dragon from the fallout of a failing Expedition. In 1849, at a meeting of the Admirals of the Air, Captain James Fitzjames of Her Majesty's Dragon Aurora recounts the events of the disastrous Franklin Expedition to determine if he will be court-martialed for the loss of HMD Ulysses with all hands aboard. The truth lies lost on the ice, somewhere in the middle.

Go read it here and then return for the last image, as it is a spoiler and a tad distressing if you don’t like looking at corpses

Girl I’m on the wiki pages of Terror characters you don’t even know exist. Based on the picture he’s never had more than 45% of his face not obscured by someone else’s shoulder in frame. Yet (bridgens voice) there will be porn

I'm assuming Fairholme was 3rd Lieutenant on Erebus? I know we get about 4 picoseconds of him but I can only find him referred to as a generic lieutenant on the show

In Hope of Better Things
Franklin Expedition spoon with the crest of Lieutenant James Walter Fairholme, with the initials C.H. (Cornelius Hickey) later added below it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Collection National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, former Greenwich Hospital Collection ID: AAA2386
I edited the first photo a bit to make the crest and initials more clearly visible.]
Tumblr media
Fairholme's crest as seen in the Illustrated London News of 28 October 1854 p.421, when the finding of this spoon & other relics was announced by John Rae. The motto 'Spero Meliora' means 'In hope of better things'.

Reading May We Be Spared to Meet on Earth and just discovered that the jacket Fairholme is wearing in his Daguerreotype is actually Fitzjames’s that he borrowed 🥹
