Borealis
In 1845, two Royal Navy ships and two Aerial Corps dragon crews left England in an attempt to finally discover a navigable passage through the Arctic. In 1847, Captain James Fitzjames struggles to shield his dragon from the fallout of a failing Expedition. In 1849, at a meeting of the Admirals of the Air, Captain James Fitzjames of Her Majesty's Dragon Aurora recounts the events of the disastrous Franklin Expedition to determine if he will be court-martialed for the loss of HMD Ulysses with all hands aboard. The truth lies lost on the ice, somewhere in the middle.

Go read it here and then return for the last image, as it is a spoiler and a tad distressing if you don’t like looking at corpses

Alright, i may be crazy, but look
Tumblr media
they’re both wearing the same coat (Fitzjames lent Fairholme his for the picture)
There’s actually another picture of each of them
Tumblr media
now look at the SLEEVES
Tumblr media Tumblr media
using this table (which I tested out with my brother for scale: he’s about half a foot taller than me, but his forearm’s only about 2cm longer than mine)
Tumblr media
This is by no means exact, (and please correct me if I’m wrong) but I think it’s very probable that Fairholme was something like half a foot taller than Fitzjames

In Hope of Better Things
Franklin Expedition spoon with the crest of Lieutenant James Walter Fairholme, with the initials C.H. (Cornelius Hickey) later added below it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Collection National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, former Greenwich Hospital Collection ID: AAA2386
I edited the first photo a bit to make the crest and initials more clearly visible.]
Tumblr media
Fairholme's crest as seen in the Illustrated London News of 28 October 1854 p.421, when the finding of this spoon & other relics was announced by John Rae. The motto 'Spero Meliora' means 'In hope of better things'.

If the ocean weren’t frozen over, though, they wouldn’t be out this far afield from the ships they’d been stranded on for nearing a year; they would be only a mile or so ahead, piloting Terror and Erebus through the ice labyrinth of the North and forging the last link between East and West, or towing them, should it prove necessary to do. This was what he had been sent for, he and Aurora and Walter and Ulysses, and now it was time to fulfill their orders.

I do have a question though, do we actually know how tall anyone on the Franklin expedition was? Like, for real?
Because I know in their biographies both Crozier and Fitzjames are described as ‘tall’, and I believe Fairholme and Irving too. But how tall? And what were their sources?

Touch me anywhere ‘cause I’m your baby - Dezholme
The glass was cool and heavy against his sweaty palms and Charles lifted it to his lips, inhaling the rich, spicy scent of whatever Walter had poured him. Took a sip, eyes glued to Walter. The booze was probably super expensive, but at the moment Charles could have downed a glass of hand sanitizer without thinking a second thought about it. Walter was cupping Charles’ cheek in one hand, thumb gently stroking over his cheekbone and Charles was losing his mind. Charles opened his mouth slightly and swayed where he stood. He longed to be kissed. His lips hurt, so cold seemed the air brushing over them. “Walter,” he said so quietly the sound almost got lost in his throat. Walter heard him. Leaned in. Kissed him. Shielded Charles’ lips from that imagined arctic wind.
His hand slid from Charles’ cheekbone to the back of his neck, cradling him, tilting his head back a bit, so that Walter could plunder his mouth more thoroughly. It took every ounce of willpower left in Charles’ body to not drop the glass and climb Walter like a tree. “Darling boy,” said Walter quietly against Charles’ lips. “My dear Freddie.”

@edwardashley Happy (late) birthday, this is for you. thank you for being such a good friend and encouraging me, being a steady rock, a true bestie ♥ Here’s to many more birthdays!!!

Gore, as an Arctic veteran (but also just as an incredibly caring man), is very protective of Fairholme, especially when it comes to the chill. He is 100% the type of partner who is like “James, it is -40 degrees outside, come back here and put on another coat” even though Fairholme insists he’s fine. If Gore doesn’t think he’s bundled up enough, he will absolutely take the scarf off his own neck and wrap it around Fairholme’s, despite the man’s (half-hearted) protestations. He also uses the excuse of warming him up as a way of touching him and being close to him (i.e. wrapping an arm around him to “keep out the chill” or holding his hands to try and “rub some warmth back into them”). The only two people who are oblivious to how obviously flirty they are are the lieutenants themselves.
