In 1845, two Royal Navy ships and two Aerial Corps dragon crews left England in an attempt to finally discover a navigable passage through the Arctic. In 1847, Captain James Fitzjames struggles to shield his dragon from the fallout of a failing Expedition. In 1849, at a meeting of the Admirals of the Air, Captain James Fitzjames of Her Majesty's Dragon Aurora recounts the events of the disastrous Franklin Expedition to determine if he will be court-martialed for the loss of HMD Ulysses with all hands aboard. The truth lies lost on the ice, somewhere in the middle.

🌷 Welcome! 🌷
❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。
🌸 Thanks for stopping by my blog! I’m Lia, a lover of all things cutesy and pink! As well as slashers and spooky/unsettling imagery, both of which I plan to post often. I also love to write, and while my content will mostly be art-based, I plan to write stories as well. Both original horror stories, and the occasional x reader for fandoms I’m in! Some of which are posted below.
(Quick note, please make sure you read this entire post before continuing onto my blog! Thank you.)
❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。
Movie/TV Franchises:
🌸 Scream (1996) and (2022/23)
🌸 Friday the 13th
🌸 Stranger Things
Games:
🌸 Last of Us
🌸 The Quarry (Potentially, still haven’t finished the game yet!)
Original Content:
🌸 Lepidoptera:
An original horror story which follows the investigation of a retired detective whose son mysteriously disappeared after attending an unheard of metal band’s underground concert, only to slowly begin uncovering just how deep the dark secrets of the teen metalheads truly delve beneath their enthusiastic and outgoing surface.
🌸 Sunnyside’s Cryptic Curse:
An original story that follows a young woman amongst her group of summer camp counselors during their 2-month stay at Sunnyside Summer Camp, and her growing concern for the recent sightings of a potentially inhuman beast lurking within the woods surrounding them. (This story will be a little more ‘ARG’-esque, written in fake logs/updates ((most likely on a separate account that will be linked once I start the story.)) I hope to try and make some creepy realism imagery to add as well!)
…And more to come!
❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。
🌸 Time for some elaboration on when it comes to any x reader content! First off I am an 18+ blog, and most of my x reader content will have N$FW/themes of N$FW. (This does not include my original horror stories, although those may have occasional s#xual themes at times depending on the story.) I will always tag these posts appropriately in the beginning, and place read-more barriers about a paragraph into the story to ensure nobody sees any content they are not comfortable with.
Please be aware of this when following me, and please keep in mind that I am only comfortable with 18+ people interacting with that content and my blog in general, so please kindly do not interact if you are not at least 18. Thank you!! :)
❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。
🌸 I also do not take requests currently, this may potentially change in the future but I don’t have any plans for it at the moment.
However, here are some characters for you to expect to see writing/content of:
🌸 Scream (1996)
• Billy Loomis
• Stu Macher
• Randy Meeks
• Sidney Prescott
• Tatum Riley
• Dewey Riley
🌸 Scream (2022/2023)

🌸 The Quarry
• Will be updating this once I finish the game 🤍
❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。
🌸 I only write the reader as gender neutral/female, as I only feel comfortable and interested in writing fxm or fxf, being a bisexual person who aligns more closely to female.
🌸 And lastly, but very importantly:
‼️ If you support anything along the lines of inc*st, p*dophilia, n0n-c0n, and anything else that aligns with this, get off of my page immediately. I do not tolerate things like this in the slightest, and do not want people like this interacting with me.‼️
❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。
Thank you so much if you’ve read through this in whole, and please stick around if you’d like to see some of my future content. 🤍

Rhett and Link The End
A short/strange fic about the end of the world. Part 1/1.
Here’s the tiktok it’s based on https://www.tiktok.com/@mythical/video/7098474572781063466?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7102508558965622277
Rhett McLaughlin is a strange man, currently standing on a busy LA street corner staring directly into the sun. People passing by didn’t bother stopping to ask if he was okay, which he was...in his own special way.
He had a newspaper rolled up under his arm, as usual, and a melted candy bar in his pocket, which was unusual. Never did a candy bar remain long enough on his person to melt, even in the intense LA heat but he had been saving it for a friend...a friend who was late for a very important meeting.
“Hey buddy,” a stranger called over to Rhett more than once.
Rhett looked and was surprised to see a smiling face. A tall, skinny man, capped with a beanie bounced over to him.
“What’s with the sign?” The man asked.
There were a lot of signs around and what kind of sign did he mean? Rhett thought, looking blankly at the man before realizing he was in fact holding a piece of cardboard scribbled with text.
“Oh,” Rhett’s eyes crossed as he tried to focus on the person in front of him, pupils still stinging from the suns rays. “It’s the date and time of worlds end.”
“The world is not going to end, my guy,” the man laughed his reply.
“How do you know it won’t?” Rhett shrugged, usually at this point people laughed in his face and walked away.
“You’ve got proof or something?” The tall man, who Rhett now realized smelled strongly of cooking grease asked with an interested tone.
Rhett sucked in a breath, preparing for the long and detailed explanation he was about to give.
“Never mind, what’s your name?” The stranger seemed suddenly rushed after glancing at his phone.
“Rhett, Rhett is the name.”
“Rhett...?”
He was looking for a last name.
“I would tell you my full name but then I risk you stealing my body in the next life.” Something he would have explained if the man had let him speak in the first place. “And I’ve already got the blueprints signed and confirmed by the GREAT LEPIDOPTERA HERSELF.”
“Okay...Lepi, what now?
“The great velvet winged creature in the sun that decides which body you’re put into after this fleshy human life.” Rhett found that not many people believed this, and not many people believed him when he showed them the evidence either. The proof was all around, why did so few people believe?
“Umm, right okay. Here,” the tall stranger held out a small slip of paper. “This is the time and address of my...’emotional support group’. We accept anyone looking for friends, community or uh help.”
Rhett had heard this before, do-gooders offering him a seat at their weekly meeting.
“Oh. Thank you,” Rhett took the paper and shoved it into his mouth, pushing it back to his molars with two fingers. He chewed, wide-eyed, and baring his teeth.
The mans faced turned disturbed, he stared for a moment before Rhett growled and the guy hurried back the direction he came.
It was because of the strange way he dressed and the odd things he said, the unusual signs he often held, and the crazy information he always had on the tip of his tongue...that was the reason people stared, people pointed, people gawked, people invited him to ‘emotional support’ meetings.
Rhett sighed and looked around, still waiting for his friend who was now about eight minutes late - unusual. The world was supposed to end in three days and they have about three hours-fifty-two-minutes before it starts.
Minutes pass.
Finally, a familiar mop of shiny black hair rounded the corner, Link.
Rhett flung the cardboard sign away and scurried over to meet him, arms pumping and feet kicking up quickly behind him as he ran, though he didn’t move very fast. People always said he ran funny, as if he had glue on his shoes and a fiery match between the shoulder blades.
“Hey! Hey, hey Link!”
“Hiyah Rhett!”
“Ready for the end of the world?” Rhett winked at him, hands on his hips.
“That is today?” Link raised both brows.
“You forgot?”
Link made an apologetic face and held up his palms with a shrug.
“Why did you think we were meeting today?”
“Cause we’re friends,” Link offered a questioning smile.
Rhett sagged and started stalking down the street.
“I’m guessing you also forgot we were supposed to get Nashville chicken as our last meal.” Link followed behind and didn’t answer.
Yeah, he had forgot.
Rhett rolled his eyes and took Link by the hand to hurry him along.
“Hold this,” Rhett threw a duffle bag. “We’ve got about three hours before ‘the end’ begins.”
Link held open the bag, catching things that Rhett was tossing over his shoulder sporadically. They were in Rhett’s detached garage - more like office/ storage locker/ borderline insanity bunker hideout.
“Then, it will take about three days to unfold, give or take.”
“Three days? I thought,” - a roll of duct tape smacked Link directly in the face and landed in the bag - “Argh...I thought the end of the world would happen like, instantly.”
Rhett turned and gaped at him, “Have you not been keeping up on the videos I post to the website? - What to do when you don’t know what to do and it’s the end of the world.”
“Well, I watched the first one.”
“The first one?! I only covered the basics about the convenience of eating newspaper.” Rhett threw up his hands and turned to the other side of the garage, to what looked like the dump pile for New York Times misprints.
“Yeah, I didn’t really understand it,” Link shook his head.
“You would understand if you also read the follow up discussion...” Rhett began rolling up papers and shoving them into the duffle bag. “The paper will help your human body adapt to the cocoon of afterlife when the great moth lady emerges from the sun and takes all our lives as sacrifice - raw wood is the recommended remedy but that’s hard to digest.”
Link didn’t respond, he didn’t know how. He knew his friend was a little crazy, but he thought he was crazy like, ‘one time we went on a UFO hunt which turned into a night of eating Doritos on the roof and listing all the Brooks and Dunn songs starting with the most likely to be played at a cowboy funeral’.
“Where did you hear that the world was going to end instantly anyway?”
“Everyone thinks that.” Link shrugged.
“Really?” He squinted, sensing a lie.
“Okay I read it somewhere,” Link admitted with a shake of his head.
“Where?” Rhett crossed his arms.
Link hesitated, “Chase Th-,”
“Chase The End Now?! That loon doesn’t know anything!” Rhett threw up his hands again. “Won’t even show his face, hides behind his blog...if you can even call it that.”
“I think his theories are fun and I enjoy the way he presents them.” Link defended.
“That’s just it, they’re only theories. What I’ve got...what we’ve got,” Rhett gripped Links shoulders, shaking him with every word. “What we’ve got here is real and now we got less than three hours to be ready for it.”
Rhett marched out the open door and Link followed.
Where are we going? And don’t you need ‘supplies’ too?” Link gestured to the full duffel bag on his own shoulder.
Rhett smirked under his beard, “I’ve been set up for weeks, and I’m taking you to a special place with a good view.”
They arrived at a vast expanse of conifers on an uphill slope. Rhett led Link down a narrow, one person path to a great towering pine. He began scaling up the wood planks nailed into the trunk, high above was a well constructed fort with three walls and a roof.
“What’s up there?” Link asked, squinting up at the structure.
“Eternity.”
“Very poetic.” Link murmured and followed Rhett up.
Rhett was intently looking through binoculars at the sky when Link arrived at the top panting, duffle bag dragging him down.
Rolled newspapers and stacks of canned beans sat in the corners of the fort, plus two comfy chairs in the middle. The three walls were plastered, print outs, paper clippings, handwritten notes, a couple of dead moths pinned up, and other various items all joined together by red twine...a road map to the end of the world.
“This is where we’ll watch it happen.” Rhett stated.
Link looked out the west opening where the fourth wall should be, the sun was nearing the horizon casting an orange hue on the bristling pine needles.
“You’re serious about this, you really think the world is going to end?” Link sighed defeatedly.
“Yep.”
“Shouldn’t we be in an unground bunker or something?”
“No chance of survival either way, might as well watch it happen. Candy bar?” Rhett offered the partially melted chocolate, still not looking away from the binoculars.
“Oh, my favourite.” Link accepted it, putting it in his own pocket.
“I know.”
Link sat in the chair next to Rhett, his chair it seemed.
“Well, how long we got?”
Rhett checked the stopwatch he had been carrying in his pocket, “Forty-two minutes until it starts, approximately, I cannot be totally certain on the time.”
“What’s going to happen?”
“Lepidoptera will rise from the fiery cocoon we call the sun and devour the planets of our solar system.”
Link froze, “Oh.”
“I suspect once it begins we’ll have about three days before she reaches earth and we die...I’ve been waiting decades for this, glad we’re alive to see it happen.”
A few moments of comfortable silence passed as they watch the sun fall.
“Any regrets?” Link asked and Rhett side eyed him questioningly. “You know, just ‘end of world’ conversation,” Link added.
“Yeah actually, I was really hoping to get some Nashville chicken with you.”
Link gave him a playful shove.
“Went to this new place downtown with my girl, it’s our anniversary...sorry.” Link offered as an excuse for his tardiness earlier.
“Congratulations.”
“Thanks. Guess it’s not much use if the world really is going to end.”
“Whatever happens, I’ll find you in the next life, I promise.” Rhett put his hand on Links shoulder and smiled at him.
Link, his only friend, smiled back. Well, the only friend he knew anyway. He couldn’t possibly meet everyone on earth to discover if they were best friend material or not.
Rhett would always find his way back to him, always.
CRACK.
The sun split like an egg and a sliver of sky suddenly turned dark, though the closest city was miles away distant screams rippled over the valley.
Rhett stared wide-eyed only for a moment then leaped from his chair cheering with inaudible words.
“Link! Link!”
A great moth-like creature emerged from the orb and began sucking away the blasting fire of the sun.
“You were right...you were right,” Link muttered. “Rhett! You were right!” Link jumped up too and took Rhett by the shoulders. “Rhett! Aha!”
Suddenly, Link grabbed Rhett’s hairy face and planted a spontaneous kiss on the mans lips. A gesture of amazement, of shock and awe, he wasn’t really thinking about it and it didn’t mean anything more than, “You’re right, you’re amazing!” Link said as he pulled away.
Rhett stared blankly ahead, a great beat of the beasts wings warped the light and sent a chill down Rhett’s spine. His face was plastered with shock and defeat as the taste of Link sunk further into his mouth. His heart quickened, his tongue thickened, his breath took effort, and he collapsed to the ground.
But not because of the world ending or the scene in front of them, not because his best friend just kissed him, but because Links lips tasted strongly of oysters and Rhett is deathly allergic.

I guess I need to get this Christmas photo up! Just a few hours till the new year! This was all I did this year aside from, of course, my inflatable FaLaLaLaLa Fish Tacos Ttuck 🤣 To be real for a moment this year was marked by so much loss, change, grief, and regrowth for me that I just felt like I needed to take a year off from decorating so that as I deal with these things it's easier to distance festivities and therefore less muddled memories when I feel up to it again (hopefully) in 2022! I've lost so many people including a parent in both '20 and '21 holiday season and I still love the Winter celebration time, hopefully this will help me not think back on going through mom's stuff while putting up lights, etc. So many of you have been so kind, encouraging, and supportive to me since we've met (or got to know) on this platform and I just want to say thank you! Thank you for sharing with me, sending me surprises like art, recipes, sticker letters, googly eye photo prints and even lepidoptera eggs! Omg the luna moth tiara! 🥺 But really what means the most is all the wonderful and sincere human (okay and occasionally one dumpling) interactions I've had, and never expected! You guys will never know how big a role you played in keeping my spirits up all throughout this year, and how much you've helped! I wish you all the best into 2022! Shout outs to: @ablairef @absinthia_faerie @caterpillove @lecreusigh @thefuglydumpling @kassyopeia13 @veganuno (I love you guys) #holidayseason #greif #support #gratitude #thankyou #newyearseve (at Pixieland Farm) https://www.instagram.com/pixie1013/p/CYKusuCrdWo/?utm_medium=tumblr

I honestly can’t believe the amount of support I’m getting I can’t thank everyone enough for helping me it finally feels like I’m going forward and not backwards this time
Also bc I was asked my cashapp is $lepidopterae
And my PayPal is https://www.paypal.me/Olawaiye
And my Venmo is Volawaiye
Thank you soooooo much
Hey I’m not sure if anyone is going to see this but I’m going to tell my story. My whole life I’ve had to deal with abusive and neglectful parents. When I was younger my mom beat me here and there but not anything different from what many african parents do. Things began to change when I was around the age of 8. My mom married and brought a man and his daughter from africa with almost all of her money sacrificing her kids eating and even her home cause we were evicted soon after she started the process. We had to go with very little food and lived in very terrible places. When he finally came to America it was shown to my mom that he didn’t truly come for her and he was using her as a gateway to a better life. When this happened a lot of problems arose in the household and my mom became even more broken. When I was around 11 we were finally able to move to the suburbs in a shabby little 3 bedroom apartment full of 9 people but this is when the serious abuse started. My mom was the only person working in the house which put her under a lot of stress. There was a division in my household my mom had come to despise the girl that she brought to America cause she was disrespectful but I felt bad that everyone ganged up on her and would usually try to stand up for her. This caused my mom and my two sisters to despise me and they would find ways to either get me beaten by my mom or make fun of it to me after the fact. Because of this I was the main target and usually the beatings would take place after my mom came home from work and they would be very severe. After years of this I decided that I couldn’t live with my parents after highschool and I would have to find a way out. I started working in my junior year as soon I was of legal age but my parents started taking my paychecks and telling me it was for my own good sometimes even beating me to take it. My senior year of highschool I was very excited cause it was finally going to be over and I was going to be graduating with a scholarship that would allow me to go school for free and get enough money back to buy myself a car. But things took a turn for the worst possible outcome when my stepdad graduated college and said that he was going to get a nice job in Connecticut. I begged my mom not to move or at least move after I graduated but she said no and that I could “get another scholarship” even though this is one I’d been working towards since freshman. My mom quit her job and put our lives in the hands of my stepdad someone who had never worked and didn’t understand how things really worked in America he moved us to a “nice” neighborhood that was in the middle of nowhere and impossible to go anywhere without a car so I usually stayed inside my room. Since now my stepdad was the only person with a steady stream of income our lives were in his hands and he said because he was paying the bills he never had enough money to buy groceries so we would go very long times without food. But in reality he was actually sending money to his illegitimate children in Africa and their mothers and it was all a lie. While this was happening my mental health took a severe toll cause I was completely isolated and hopeless and I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to be able to leave. I also lost my scholarship cause I left the school district and lost my job which even though my parents were taking most of my check I would a least scrape off 20$ so I wouldn’t have to go hungry. I would love to leave this place and I have a plan to I’m going to be getting my associates in biology in the spring/summer and I’ll be able to move away and get a real job. The only setback is that I don’t have a car and I can’t get a job where I live. The only place hiring around me is amazon but I can’t work there because they give 11h30m shifts that makes it very hard to do my schoolwork. I have a gofundme and I’m hoping that I could please get some donations so I can finally leave this hellhole and make a home for myself thankyou for taking the time to read this.

Black swallowtail on wild bergamot
Species at risk: Mormon Metalmark (Apodemia mormo) butterfly depends on buckwheat host plant.
Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) photo credit William Warby
“Entomology extends the limits of being in new directions, so that I walk in nature with a sense of greater space and freedom. It suggests, besides, that the universe is not rough-hewn, but perfect in its details. Nature will bear the closest inspection; she invites us to lay our eye level with the smallest leaf and take an insect view of its plane.”—Henry David Thoreau.
In popular esteem the butterflies among the insects are what the birds are among the higher animals—the most attractive and beautiful members of the great group to which they belong. Entomology happens to be the branch of zoology focussing on the study of insects. Butterflies are primarily day fliers (diurnal) and remarkable for the delicacy and beauty of their membranous wings, covered with myriads of tiny scales that overlap one another like the shingles on a house and show an infinite variety of hue through the coloring of the scales and their arrangement upon the translucent membrane running between the wing veins. It is this characteristic structure of the wings that gives to the great order of butterflies and moths its name “Lepidoptera”, meaning scale-winged.
The Entomological Society of Saskatchewan takes part in the North American Butterfly Count July 21. The society members will also give talks, presentations and displays.
Take the time to learn how to establish a pollinator native plant ribbon or butterfly garden. The North American Butterfly Association will provide Certification for your butterfly garden.
Ronald R. Hooper states that 160 species of butterflies are known in Saskatchewan, in families known as skippers, swallowtails, whites, sulphurs, marbles, hairstreaks, harvester, metalmarks, brushfooted butterflies, meadow browns, and coppers (see bibliography for scientific nomenclature). Every fall the Monarchs journey from Canada to California or Mexico, and they return to Canada in the spring. During this migration phone Nature Saskatchewan’s toll-free line at 1-800-667-HOOT (4668) to report any Monarch Butterfly sightings. When you are out and about this season, keep an ear out, do tell if there is the slightest murmuration when the butterflies migrate past.
And, whereas, the Monarch is known to migrate, this is not the case with all butterflies. Most of the Swallowtails pass the winter as chrysalids while practically all the Angle-wings pass the winter as adults. The Graylings and the Fritillaries are typical examples of butterflies which hibernate as newly hatched larvae. Many species simply find such shelter as they may at or near the soil surface, others may hibernate under boards, stones, or tufts of grass. The Swallowtails, nearly all of which hibernate in the chrysalis stage. Other examples are the various Whites, the Orange-tips, and isolated species like the Wanderer, and the Spring Azure and the American Copper. Now, an adult butterfly seems a fragile creature to endure the long cold months of winter, however many of our most beautiful species habitually hibernate as adults, finding shelter in such situations as hollow trees, the crevices in rocks, the openings beneath loose bark or even the outer bark on the under side of a large branch.
The butterflies furnish the best known examples of insect transformations. The change from the egg to the caterpillar or larva, from the caterpillar to the pupa or chrysalis, and from the chrysalis to the butterfly or imago is doubtless the most generally known fact concerning the life histories of insects. If you do not know the name of the lepidoptera larva, butterfly or moth that you have found, try to take a photograph of it. Identify your sighting at this web site which features an image gallery. If you have a photo of a caterpillar send in information about the plant that the caterpillar was found upon to Butterflies and Moths of North America and help to grow the database.
The Entomological Society of Canada hosts a Common Names database for insects and other related arthropods.

There is another aspect of life on the land; while working in forest or garden a man has time for meditation and indeed his very act is devotion. He becomes in tune with the Infinite. Get your nets ready, Lepidoptera 6 (Rose) & 7 (Vega) are here. The next two in the Lepidoptera series have been caught, carefully positioned (cruelty-free) and photographed, and available for your purchasing pleasure this coming Thursday, May 27 at a random time. Prints are 10” x 8”, each hand signed and numbered. Slightly larger edition size of 200 (each) this time to keep up with demand, though these insects still seem to go pretty fast, so have your refresh fingers ready on your digital nets. (Store link in bio: ncwinters.BigCartel.com.) As per the last few releases, the prints will come as a pair, with a small sampling of individual hand embellished prints available (15 each) for those who aren’t satisfied until a print has been cut up, scuffed up and painted on, ya weirdos. Full details go out in the Art Bucket: my semi-monthly email newsletter about updates, new releases and drops. To get access to this super secret list, go to the sidebar of my very public website and subscribe: ncwinters.com. Thank you all for your support and patience, I know your bug nets have been prepped and hungry. Wishing everyone the best as the world slowly turns back on and we’re pulled into the expectant siren’s call of summer, heavy with promise. I love you all. ❤️ -N. https://www.instagram.com/p/CPTtHiLtbjJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Thank you for so many kind words today in regards to my stories. This time of year is always a little wobbly for me, and certain things that I thought I was over, resurface which inevitably affects my mental health and my ability to cope with any situation. It’s not that I’m not okay, as grand scheme of things I like to think I’m doing pretty well for myself, but as a human being I get frustrated and sad at times. Like we all do. But I appreciate all of you and your support you have all shown me through the turmoil. On a lighter note, I’m working my way through lots of pinned specimens ready for the next update, and seeing as it’s my birthday Sunday I’ll also be holding a sale on the website. Sign up to be the first to receive the discount code as soon as it goes live! But seriously, thank you all I love you all 🖤 #jennascuriocabinet #deathsheadmoth #deathsheadhawkmoth #deathshead #acherontia #lepidoptera #insectartwork #butterflyartwork #butterfliesoftheworld #butterfliesofindia https://www.instagram.com/p/CkbTD_fqNP0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Good evening everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your bank holiday weekend! I decided to take a much needed break over the bank holiday weekend, Unfortunately I don’t feel as recharged as I would like to be feeling right now, and due to this reason I have decided to take a little break from creating, so there won’t be a shop update for a little while. I have been battling some internal feelings recently so I have decided to focus the bulk of my time elsewhere. I will still be posting pictures on Instagram as I still have a shop full of stock, I will also still be doing my Tuesday post office runs, and finishing off commissions. I just need some Jenna time to make my heart happy, what that is, I don’t know right now I just need to do this. I hope you all can understand and thank you to all who continue to support me, like my posts, and buy my work. The happiness of the bee and the dolphin is to exist. For man, it is to know that and wonder at it. -Jacques Cousteau
Its the middle of March, plant a flower indoors, begin a pollinator garden! When contemplating your next pollinator garden, factor in various flower colours, and sizes, along with a variety of plants which bloom in different seasons of the year. Your pollinator garden will support bees, hummingbirds, bats, ladybugs, butterflies and moths. A pollinator garden provides an ecosystem to plants as well as insects. Provided are links to listings for a variety of native plants to attract pollinators to your garden.
***From the various pollinator flowers for Saskatchewan, perhaps Red Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) is the easiest to establish and maintain.
***Lowbush Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) requires acidic soil such as found in the higher elevations of spruce and bog forests where the parkland meets with the tundra ecosystem of Saskatchewan.
***Prairie Crocus (Pulsatilla patens), the provincial flower of Manitoba, is a remarkable native flower and is being encouraged in its native habitat by efforts of the Saskatoon Nature Society. The requirements of the prarie crocus is soil which has been undisturbed (uncultivated) for about 30 years to allow the proper micronutrients to flourish to feed the crocus corms (bulbs). The crocus, also thrives under adverse conditions, and adapted to the migratory patterns of buffalo herds, and historic raging prairie grass fires extending miles across the plains.
***The Western Red Lily, Prairie Lily or Wood Lily (Lilium philadelphicum), is the official flower of Saskatchewan, and a protected species, so do not run out and pick the next one growing in its native habitat. Go to a reputable garden supply centre. Lily plants also grow from bulbs, so planting in the fall is the best season of the year to establish a bulb.
***Western Wild bergamot, or bee balm (Monarda fistulosa) is a beautiful purple flower attracting pollinators blooming in July and August.
***Purple Coneflower (Echinacea augusifolia D.C.) produces purple ray florets with a protuding yellowish-brown disc floret in the centre. Blooming in July through September, the yellow prairie coneflower Ratibida columnifera is more common, and the purple coneflower is very rare in Saskatchewan.
***Blanket Flower (Gaillardia sp.) is a bright yellow – orange flower growing to a height of 1 to 3 feet. Perennial Blanket are a burst of sunshine in your wildlife garden, and love well-drained soil
***Purple coneflower, upright prairie coneflower (Ratibida columnifera), and blanketflower or common gaillardia (Gaillardia aristata) are both a documented nectar source for the Dakota skipper (Hesperia dacotae).
***Alpine Columbine Aquilegia alpina is a spring/early summer blooming perennial. Small-flowered Columbine (Aquilegia Brevistyla Hook) and Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis L) are both native to Saskatchewan.
***Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) with delicate white blooms loves to grow in moist soil – though will survive drought conditions` which has been disturbed (turned over). Blooming in late June, the yarrow will bloom into September.
*** Canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) saskatchewan produces a stalk with yellow blooms, flowering in late summer and into the early autumn months.
***Smooth aster (Symphyotrichum leave) or any member of the aster family are beloved by pollinators. Smooth aster is vivid blue violet in colour with prominent yellow disc florets in the centre. Growing between 1 and 4 feet high (30-120 cm) however mainly observed growing closer to the 1 foot height. In August and September is when this aster blooms.
March 10, Plant a Flower Day start a pollinator garden. Though it may be -19 Celsius, with snow on the ground, aim for a target. There are many other native flower species than those suggested here, don’t just trust me, click a link on this page.
