06.19.24 Sad to hear about the death of James Chance yesterday, after a long illness. A lynchpin of the no wave scene, the brutal Contortions tracks on No New York left a lasting impression.

R.I.P. James Chance.
I only got to see him twice among the last few years, at a small club and a larger outdoor summerfest, both intense and still right at unhinged… Chatted with him one time - nice, shy, brimming with mystery…

Composer and musician James Chance/White has died, age 71.
He was one of the most visible faces of "no wave" in NYC in the late '70s, and his brand of skronky sax over downtown funk, as captured in this excerpt from the film Downtown 81, is redolent of that scene and sound.
He was in poor health and finances in the latter part of his life. A GoFundMe helped his family and friends get him settled for the last few years before he passed. That our creators have to have their health care crowdsourced is an indictment of our values. That we, as a government and society, have decided that our elderly have to suffer uncertain health care and financial security is an even harsher indictment.
