In what could be called the greatest rivalry in hockey, the bruins and the Montreal Canadiens would finally meet again tonight for the first time since February 12, 2020. In their last meeting, the bruins won the game 4-1. Boston was entering the night with a 7-5-0 record, Montreal, a record of 4-11-1. Jeremy Swayman (4-2-0) and Montreal’s Sam Montembeault (0-3-1) were the game’s starting goalies.
This would be a very physical game with lots of heavy hitting. The habs would get the first goal of the game when Joel Armia would wrist the puck past Swayman on a 2-on-1 at 8:09. The lone assist came from Artturi Lehkonen. It would be the only goal of the period.
In the second, David Pastrňák and Brad Marchand got a 2-on-0 breakaway but Montembeault shut the door on Marchand’s shot. The bruins finally tied it at 8:27 when Charlie McAvoy slammed home a rebound in front. Taylor Hall and Jakub Zbořil got the assists. Soon after, Swayman faced a flurry of shots but he stopped all of them. Late in the period though, Michael Pezzetta would give Montreal the lead back his 1st career NHL goal with assists from Adam Brooks and Josh Anderson. The goal came at 16:25.
Early in the third period, the bruins took advantage of a powerplay when Charlie McAvoy got his second of the game from Brad Marchand at 2:17. Jeremy Swayman then made a big glove save on Montreal’s Alexander Romanov to keep it tied. The bruins then took the lead at when an errant clearing attempt by the habs’ Jeff Petry deflected in off of Charlie Coyle at 5:58. Coyle would also then score his second goal of the game at 9:05 from Jake DeBrusk and Oskar Steen. In the final 3:00, Montreal pulled Montembeault for an extra skater but at 18:02, Taylor Hall would get the empty netter from David Pastrňák and Brandon Carlo. Boston would take the game by a final score of 5-2.
