Goodnight Kisses - JayB
You knew JayB would berate you for still being awake when he got home, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Recently, you'd got into such a routine of going to be together that it just felt wrong trying to sleep when he wasn't there. You'd done everything you normally would before sliding under the covers, but without your good night kiss and the warmth of your man beside you, you just couldn't drift off.
JayB always promised you you'd still get your good night kiss if you were asleep when he got home but it wasn't the same. When you heard the front door open, you had a brief debate with yourself as to whether or not to feign sleep. As his gentle footsteps approached your room you decided against it, opting to greet JayB instead. You could tell he was trying to be quiet as he entered but you spoke up.
"Jae?"
"Ah, jagiya, why are you awake?" he whispered. There was a slight smile on his face as he spoke, negating any air of annoyance in his words.
"Can't sleep," you complained. "Not without my goodnight kisses."
"Just let me wash up and get changed and you can have all the kisses you want," he replied.
You groaned and stretched your arms out in his direction, hoping to summon him closer.
He chuckled as he approached you, shaking his head. "You're always so clingy when you're tired," he said running a hand through your hair.
You closed your eyes, focusing on the feeling of his fingers in your hair. All too soon he was pulling away again. Your eyes snapped open as you reached out to grab his hand and put it back. Unfortunately, in your sleepy state, JayB was quicker.
"I'm just getting ready for bed, jagi, then I'm all yours."
You still whined a little as he left you to head to the bathroom but you were for too tired to launch any sort of actual protest.
After far too long, he was climbing into bed behind you, enveloping you in his arms as a kiss was pressed to your shoulder.
"I love you, my needy jagi," he whispered.
You grunted at his teasing and snuggled further into his embrace.
There was a moments silence before you felt his finger tips digging into your waist and tickling you slightly. You squirmed but JayB didn't relent.
"Say it," he demanded.
"Who's needy now?" you retorted.
He tickled you again.
"I love you, too." You told him what he wanted to hear to stop the attack.
"That's better," he replied. "Sleep well."
With one last kiss placed gently on your neck, he held you tightly again, allowing you both to drift off to sleep, comforted by each others presence.

“I honestly just think you have bad taste, Eunmi.”
She glared at him, her heart not all the way in it, eyes locking with his.
“I’m just saying,” Jae said with a shrug, eyes darting from hers. “Those guys don’t deserve you at all.”
All thoughts in Eunmi’s mind came to a screeching halt at those words, and Jaebum shoved both hands in his pockets, seeming a little wobbly on his feet as he glanced down at his shoes.
“What?”
It’s all she could think to say in that moment, voice quiet, honestly not sure if she heard him right. Her heart was racing in her chest, much harder than it had all night, and she felt an odd flutter in her throat as she swallowed hard. Eunmi watched him reach up to run a hand through his hair, her eyes following the movement, realizing how close they were standing for the first time.
“I just-”
Eunmi knew Jae too well; he always looked around when he was nervous, as if the words he needed were written on a cue card waiting for him in the background.
“They’re not really worth your time. You’re…”
She felt like she couldn’t breathe now, something different about the air between them, something charged that she wasn’t sure if she was imagining or not. Her stomach was twisting slowly but steadily, drunk mind frozen in time, not sure what to expect from this man in front of her.
He finally sighed, taking his hand from his hair and letting it drop to his side.
“You’re too good for them, Eunmi.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Anything else I should know about you, Miss Kim?”
Jinyoung's eyes were shining in amusement and she giggled with a playful roll of her eyes.
“You can call me Arin, Professor Park .”
He bit his lip, the smile on his face a little more wicked than it should’ve been as he looked at her through his lashes.
“I think I might still want you to call me Professor Park though.”
Oh my god, yeah, he’s definitely drunk
But truthfully, so was she, and his words had her brain short-circuiting as she took in the implications. She wanted him, bad - since the moment she’d seen him on the first day of class- but with him so close, yet so far away, a tantalizing grin on his face as she realized their knees were definitely touching now…
Arin knew they were wading in dangerous waters.
“What if I don’t want to call you that?” she asked with a teasing smirk, a master at hiding her emotions, drunk or not. “ Jinyoung .”
“Hmm…” he searched the features of her face, eyes lingering on her lips before he was reaching into the chip bag again. “I guess I can live with that.”
If you liked this preview, you can read the whole novel here on my AO3 page 😊!

DISCLAIMER! THIS IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE BOOK SERIES BUT IT WILL HAVE REFERENCES TO THE BOOK.
You loved your brother, you did. but god was he controlling sometimes— he controlled everyone in spring court, he was a busy man and you were an adult, so why did he make it his mission to always be in your business.
"Lee know said he caught you trying to sneak back in through the border of the mortal realm." you scoffed, turning to lee know. "snitch." he shrugged.
"__, you think this is a joke— you went there, knowing jaebum was recently murdered, have you learned nothing." you rolled your eyes.
"Please, like i'd let a mortal kill me." he sighed angrily, slamming his hands on the table, making you jump. "jesus chan!"
"Don't act like this is just you coming in late at night, you keep crossing the border, you're powerless- i can thank you for that." you mumbled. "you can thank yourself for that, i told you there are consequences for your actions—you disobeyed me, and i told you what would happen if you did."
"It wasn't that big of a deal."
"Wasn't that big of a deal— you tried to cross the border, you could've died!" you stood up, tired of his yelling. "but i didn't, let it go."
"How about you grow up, you're always claiming you're an adult, then act like one, or the next time you find yourself in a dangerous situation, i'll let you die like the idiot you are." it was silent, no one ever bothered to intervene when you got into these arguments.
"I hate you." you spat, walking away from the table, and making your way to your room, you weren't gonna stay here and take this, you were leaving, for good this time.
Waiting for everyone to fall asleep, you put on your shoes, making your way to the stables where the horses were stored.
"Hello midnight." you patted the horse you used to ride when you were younger. "long time no see, me and you are gonna get out of this wretched place." the animal huffed in response. "you don't have much of a choice."
You climbed on the back of the animal, shushing her when she began to make a lot of noise. "you're gonna wake up the staff hush." you held the strap, keeping her steady, "okay, let's get out of here." you slowly took off— just until you crossed the gate of the castle, then you commanded the horse to go faster, and you watch as the castle became smaller and smaller until it was no longer in sight.
You rode and rode throughout spring court, without a care in the world, you finally felt free from your brother and the spring court castle... well that was until midnight came to a stop.
"Midnight, what the hell?"
The steed nudged her head forward, almost as if it was trying to tell you something. "what is it?" you look forward, finally realizing that you were at the border... the border of night court.
"He'd never think i went into night court, he'd search the mortal realm first." you ushered the horse along, but she resisted. "go midnight." the horse huffed, before continuing on slowly.
You could definitely tell you weren't in the spring-court anymore, everything was covered in weird artwork. "we must be in the hewn city, it's just like they described it." you whispered, trying not alert anyone, walking further through the streets of the hwen city.
The more you walked, the more worked up midnight became. "midnight, calm down why are you act- i know a spring-couet faerie when i see one?" the voice sent shivers down your spine, and apparently midnights too, because before you could even react, midnight stood on her hind legs, sending you flying to the ground, before she took off in the other directions.
"Shit."
"That must've hurt." you could just tell he had ill intentions. "oh? that's a pretty gold necklace." his eyes raked down your body, making you feel uncomfortable. you quickly jumped to your feet as he walked closer to you.
"N-no it's mines." you rubbed your elbow that stung from your fall. his lips curled into a sinister smile. "oh, i didn't ask, give it." he backed you into a wall. "and i'll let you live."
You felt his hand on your waist, pulling you against him. "let me go!" his laugh showed you he didn't really care. "feisty one, maybe i'll keep you, see how long you can put up a fight." he held both your wrist together to keep you from hitting him. "see how long it takes to break you."
You tried to scream, but he just held his free hand over your mouth. "shut the fuck up." his hands were rough on your lips, as his hand reached up to grab your necklace.
"Come on, leave her alone."
A voice spoke from behind. "you can't be serious trying to rob her of a necklace." he was definitely more built then the asshole who was currently pining you to a wall.
"Aw come on, looks like she's having fun though, i'll share her." you locked eyes with the raven haired man, and he could tell you were scared. he walked closer towards you and the asshole, who still hadn't turned around yet, grabbing his shoulder.
"Look i don't normally even ask, if you don't want to share her then get the fuck-" his voice got caught in his throat once he locked eyes with the mystery man. "w-what a-are you doing h-here, in the h-hewn city?"
"My business here doesn't concern you, i told you to let her go." the asshole immediately let you go, trembling in fear. "no go before it's you who is pressed against the wall, but i'll snap your neck." his tone serious, sent the asshole running tail tucked between his thighs.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." you wiped all the dirt from your dress. "tha- don't worry about it." he interjected. "hold up, i know who you are." shit, you were caught. "what's chan's little sister doing here in night-court? you're a long way from home." he smirked, but it wasn't sinister like the previous guy, more so mischievous.
"It doesn't matter." you tried to walk away, but he grabbed your arm, preventing you from doing so. "let me go." you tried to pull away. "i could let you go, let the people here have there way with you, or you could come with me and you can get that elbow checked out, your choice spring-court." you snatched your arm away.
"My name is __." he quirked up an eyebrow. "and fine, i'll go—only because i don't want to run into that asshole again." he chuckled. "my carriage is over there, let's go." you stopped.
"You're carriage?" he rolled his eyes. "you're the high fae."
"Changbin is fine, now let's go before i change my mind." he led you to the carriage. you climbed up sitting on the opposite side of him, holding your elbow. "not much of a talker are you?"
"You're stranger." you stared out the window.
"But here you are, in my carriage, about to go to my castle." his tilted his head. "just drive please, my elbow is killing me." you snapped.
"Yikes. you are something else, you heard her, let's go."
Not much wasn't said on the way there, but changbin couldn't keep his eyes off of you. he was intrigued, why were you here? you're practically royalty yourself, so why were you alone, in the hewn village of all places, without guards? and where were your powers? you should've been able to easily throw that man off of you.
You eventually arrived at the doors of his castle, stepping out of the carriage, 3 of his servants waited at the door for him, one of them taking his jacket. "let's get that arm checked out, mrs.jung escort her to the left wing, the rest of you get back to work." he spoke with such dominance, everyone scrambled to do whatever they were instructed to do.
"Let's go, the left wing is that way." she walked and you took it as a sign to follow her.
"It's just some blood and bruise, you should be fine, the pain should decrease within a few days, the bleeding in a few hours." the woman stood up. "It's just a little boo boo." changbin stood in the threshold.
"Leave us mrs jung." the woman nodded, before leaving the room quietly, closing the room door. he moved over to the seat in front of you, eyes never leaving yours as he took a seat, crossing his arm, biceps flexing.
"What, why are you looking at me like that?" there we was again with that stupid smirk. "no need to be so uptight, just want to ask you some questions, that's all." he sat back in his seat.
"What?"
"Why are you in here in night-court, alone?" he questioned. "royalty like you just doesn't waltz into night-court without multiple guards surrounding you."
"I ran away." he sat up, intrigued. "ran away? why, and why'd you allow that asshole to pin you down like that—unless you like things like, but that guy should've been lightwork for a fae like you."
"You ask a lot of questions." who was he to ask all these questions, was he gonna tell on you or something. "but since you want to know so bad, i ran away because i wanted to get away from my controlling brother, he doesn't allow me to do what i want, then he yells at me to be an adult."
He shook his head, "and what is it that you wanted to do princess?" that new name sending a chill down your spine, changbin smirking, watching your eyes widen a bit. "c-cross t-the border to the mortal realm." he laughed.
"Why would you want to go to that wretched place?" he noticed your face, deciding not to press for now. "well, what about your abilities, what happened to them?" he changed the subject.
"i got them stripped away." he scoffed. "of course you did." He stood up, walking slowly over to you.
"W-what are you doing?..."
"The sister of my sworn enemy, i could have a alot of fun with this." it never stopped to occur to you that he was a enemy of you're brother. "y-you can't keep me prisoner here." he chuckled, bringing his hand to your cheek. "princess, if i wanted to imprison you, i could." you were about smack his hand away when he grabbed your hand.
"You're powerless, remember."
His laugh was tantalizing, he dropped your hand in your laugh, letting your cheek go. "but, i have a different agenda in mind, you can stay here." he said. you were confused, "stay here?"
He nodded. "sure. why not, first your brother will look in the mortal realm for you, thinking you finally crossed the border, for a few days, he'll be stressed , angry— and for me, that's the enough, then." it was your turn to scoff. "so you're doing this just to piss my brother off?"
"I could let you die out there, and call him to tell him, his cries of agony and mourning of your death would still make me smile for the next following months, either way i win." he looked at you with a 'what's it gonna be' look.
"where will i sleep?" you coughed awkwardly. "i'll get mrs. jung to show you to your room, don't worry, i'll sure it's fit for royalty such as yourself." you rolled your eyes, not noticing his smile as he walked out of the room.
—
Mrs. jung escorted you to your room, the decor much more darker than the your normal room back in spring-court. "he requested you have this room, it's one of the best rooms here." you sat down in the bed. "it's nice."
"Seeing as you don't have any clothes, he's taken it upon himself to request the tailor to design a few for you, be warned, they're fit to his liking." you rolled your eyes. "of course he did." she pointed to bed. "you'll find everything you need in there for tonight, it's late you should get ready for bed." she left you alone, closing the door behind her.
why did he make you feel like this.
You decided to take just a quick bath, just to wash the dirt from your fall off your body, stepping out, wrapping the towel around your body when the water grew cold.
You eyed the black night gown sitting on the bed, picking it up to feel the fabric. "pretty isn't it?" you whipped your body around so fast your towel almost fell down, but luckily you grabbed it tightening your grip on it.
"Oh wow, i didn't think we'd move this fast, i don't mind it though." you wanted to smack that smirk right off his face. "i'm kidding, i just wanted to see if you had gotten settled in." he said.
"I did, you can go now." instead he didn't leave, he just inched closer and closer, backing up you didn't realize the chair was behind you, until the back of your legs hit it. "g-go."
The close proximity was killing you, and he was aware of it "g-go."
"go before i- what?" he grabbed your arm. "what are you gonna do?" he whispered, you tried to pull your arm away, but his serious face made you stop immediately.
"Good girl, i just want to check the bandage on your elbow." he lifted your arm, you used the other to hold the towel.
"Why do you keep trying to cross the border to the mortal realm?" he unwrapped the bandage. " there must be a reason why you keep going back?" you shrugged.
"Because i've been told my entire life listen to your brother." "he's older than you, so he's right." "your brother just wants the best, it's so annoying, im my own person you know." he nodded, feeling for you.
"How close have you've gotten?" he questioned. you sighed. "not close, chan is always there to find me." he laughed, you stared blankly at him. "it isn't funny." you went to slap him, but like before he grabbed your hand.
"You'd have to let your towel go to use the other one, i have no problem if you want to be naked princess, but i bet it would be embarrassing for you." his eye's traveled down, smirking.
You looked down, horror evident in your face. how the hell did you forget you were naked? "get out!" he stood up, laughing on his way out. "good night princess." he closed the door.
"Asshole." you let out a yell of frustration, not knowing he was laughing on the other side of the door, he thought you were cute.
Sitting on the bed with a huff, you slipped into the night gown, noticing the little bit of blood poking through the badge, thinking about the minutes before, when changbin had just wrapped it.
"Idiot." you unrolled it, doing it the right way. "you did it wrong." a smile creeping up on your face, he was cute.
—
The next morning you woke up pretty late, you weren't in your realm, so you didn't have any duties to do, why not sleep in a little late.
"You're up." mrs. jung stood in the door. "finally, I don't know if that's how they do it in the spring court, but here we get up on time for breakfast." you laughed, embarrassed. "for you, he made the cooks fix you breakfast, it's waiting for you." you nodded.
"Hurry and get dressed." she closed the door. "what a cold lady." you shook your head, deciding not to let it bother you, getting up to get ready for today.
"He has got to be kidding?" you scoffed as the tailor helped put the dress on, the black longsleeve dress, that went to the middle of your thighs, a slit in the side, with a deep plunge.
"Beautiful ain't it." you rolled your eyes at the familiar voice. "I knew you'd look amazing in it." he ordered the tailor to leave.
"Absolutely ravishing."
"A bit short, don't you think?" he shook his head no. "of course not! i personally think it should be shorter, maybe right..." you gasped as his hand touched the side of your thigh, slowly pulling up the fabric of the dress, stopping. "here." he smirked at your flustered face.
"I can see how frustrated you are, you thinking of something naughty princess?" he chuckled, pulling away. "s-shut up." you frowned. "it's okay if you are, i had a naughty thought about you too, i can't tell you though, i want to keep it to myself."
"I didn't ask."
"So mean princess, i get you all these nice clothes, and you treat me like this." he pouted, but your face still stayed stone. "what do you want?"
"I just wanted to see your beautiful face, i'll be out for the day, i'll be back later this evening, you may do whatever you want, but i wouldn't recommended going out to the city, cause you know." you nodded, "we're are you going?"
"Why will you miss me?"
"No, but i'd rather not be left here if you so happen to die." he grabbed his chest jokingly, which looked like it was about to burst from his black button up shirt. "ouch, that hurts princess." he smiled. "I'll be back soon, i promise." you nodded as he walked to the door, turning to face you once again.
"You really do look beautiful." You tried to contain the smile that crept up on your face, but he saw it, he chose to keep quiet though, closing the door, smiling to himself.
"Have you told her?" He turned, facing the woman. "About the mating bond? have you told her that she's your mate?" he sighed. "mrs. jung, i met her yesterday, how do just tell someone something like that, someone of another court, and your enemy's sister at that."
"She knows what it is, she isn't stupid." changbin walked away, her following right behind. "yeah well it hasn't even activated for her yet, so it might not even be her." the woman grabbed him, stopping.
"But it activated for you. you said it as soon as you heard her call out for help, it activated." he shrugged. "i don't know what's going on, besides she has a lot going on right now with her brother, she doesn't need this—so drop it for now, i'll figure it out later. i have to go." and like that, the man was gone.
—
And he stayed gone for 2 whole days, leaving you lonely, and you had to admit— not having him around, you definitely felt a little ping in your heart that you couldn't understand why.
Not being able to do anything, you stayed in your room, reading the books mrs. jung bought you, even though she complained the entire time.
Quickly the new day bled into a new night, and you grew quite hungry.
You remember the words mrs. jung told you as she left for the evening 'the staff made deserts for you, if you want one, they're in the kitchen, ring for help if you need it.' you didn't need to ring for help, the kitchen wasn't that far away, sliding your slippers on, making your way to the kitchen.
You were greeting in the kitchen by the smell of different desserts sitting on the table, stomach rumbling with hunger. you picked up a chocolate chip cookie, taking a bite, moaning at sweet treat on your tongue.
"Such a pretty noise." changbin stood in the corridor of the kitchen. "you're back?" you said, mouth full of cookie, biting back a smile in relief. "where were you for two days?" he made is way over to you. "you missed me did you?" he smiled. "no, i was bored, there's nothing to do here."
"You're so cold." he pouted. "i missed you." you rolled your eyes. "i did." his voice a bit more deeper. "i was in agony for 2 days without you." he was getting closer and closer, much like this morning. "c-changbin, s-stop playing around." he was getting frustrated, he wished the mating bond would just activate already.
"I'm not playing around princess."
He knew he wasn't supposed to rush the mating bond, but no one said anything about having any fun— maybe the bond will activate.
He now was standing behind you, caging you in between him and the table. "you're wearing the nightgown i picked out for you." he held the end of the gown, slowly dragging his hand , the dress going up exposing your underwear. "you look so sexy."
"We shouldn't be doing this." you bit back a moan, as he turned you around, face him. "what's stopping us?" he pulled you into a hungry kiss, swallowing the moan in your throat.
"There's no one here." his hands danced across your panty line, "no one to stop us." his hands finding his way into your panties, cupping your heat. "changbin." you moaned, grabbing his shoulder to keep upright.
"You're so wet princess, you tried to resist me, but this whole time you're soaked down here."
He drew circles on your clit, letting you grind down on his hand. "that's it — fuck yourself on my hand." he attacked your neck with kisses. "im gonna add a finger, okay?" you moaned, nodding.
he slowly pushed a finger into your aching hole, you let out a whine as he pulled out, sliding back in. "So fucking tight, gonna let me split you open with my fat cock? hmm, fuck my cock into you." your mind was somewhere else, moaning in agreement.
"Yes! yes, fuck! im about to cum." he smirked, adding another finger, speeding up to get you to cum, so he could finally fuck you. "go a head and cum baby princess."
"Oh my- fuckkk!" you screamed, cumming on his fingers. "that's a good girl, keep cumming." he rode out your high.
He gently picked you up, sitting you on the counter, his clothed cock twitching against your heat. "changbin....i want you." you desperately grounded your hips against him, he bit back a groan, reaching under your dress pulling down your underwear.
"Jesus, you made such a big mess." he toyed with your clit, using his free hand to unbuckle his pants, pulling his cock out precum leaking from his tip. "please." you moaned when he pressed his cock at your entrance, your cunt fluttering just from the action.
"I'm not even in you yet and you're moaning so prettily." He slowly pushed the tip of his cock into you, watching your cunt swallow his cock. "princess you're taking me so well." you moaned, moving your hips, signaling for him to go faster. "please...please go faster."
"You want me to go faster?" he teased, you nodded. "p..please, changbin." he chuckled before picking up his pace. "oh fuck!" you screamed as he slammed into you. "that's it princess, let it all out." he raised his hands to squeeze your boobs, you clenched around him hard. "fuck- you're gonna cum princess again-" you cut him off with a moan. "yes!"
"fuck princess me too." he groaned, kissing you passionately. "cum for me." he whispered in your ear, biting the lobe a bit, sending you into another powerful orgasm. "that's it- fuck!" he pulled out, tugging at his cock, white pouring out of his cock, landing on your stomach.
You breathed heavily, eyes fluttering. "You felt so good princess." he held your exhausted body against his.
"Let's get you to bed okay?" he held you so gently as he carried you to his bedroom, not wanting to let you go, even for a second when he had to clean you up.
"Princess?" he noticed your sleeping body...it hadn't activated yet.
He felt his heart about to burst in sadness, he was so sure it was gonna activate. he heard of male fae going crazy if the mate bond was denied, but not when it hasn't even been activated yet.
Or has it? had you found out without him knowing and rejected it? his head was spinning, he was slowly losing his mind, coming out from his head when he felt your body shifted. "C...changbin." you sighed.
"It's okay, i'm here." he layed beside you, pulled your frame against his. "Please don't reject it." he whispered to himself, not even noticing the tear drops falling from his face.
"Please don't reject me."
—
You woke up the next morning back against changbin's buff chest, arm around your waist tightly. "changbin i can barely-" it felt like the wind had been knocked out of you as you turned your body to face him.
It can't be...
"This can't be right." almost as if changbin felt it too, he slowly arouse from his slumber. "what's- this is wrong." you slid your body away from him. "this isn't possible."
Changbin could feel his mind slowly slip into more madness. "please... please listen to me, i know it was weird, but it can't be helped." he tried to grab your hand, but you pulled away.
"You knew already?"
"Since the day i saw you, but yours hadn't activated, well until now."
You were in shock, you didn't know what to feel, he was from a different court, you never heard of something like this before. "my brother won't allow this, and we need his blessing."
"b.but please don't reject it just yet, please i know you feel something too, you wouldn't have let me do what i did yesterday." he was right, you wouldn't just have sex with anybody, you felt something there for him.
"Just please give me a chance, just get dressed okay? i want to show you something." you could see the desperation in his eyes. "please."
"okay."
The staff helped you get ready for the day, a longer dress, similar style to the short one. "you look beautiful." changbin didn't have a flirty remark today, not when he was about to figure out if he was about to be rejected or not.
"thank you." he hesitantly took your hand. "we have to get there by winnowing, is that okay with you?" you nodded, "that's fine." you whispered, nodding he let out a deep shaking sigh, he closed his eyes, concentrating so that you'd get there safely.
Before you could blink, you were standing outside a building, no longer in the hwen city. "what is this?" you looked turned to changbin. "my home." he said, you looked at him with confusion. "what?'
"This is velaris, the house of wind to be exact, my real home." you were even more confused now. "but- please let's just get upstairs, i'll explain everything then."
"we have to fly up, winnowing isn't allowed in, and the only other way is climbing 10,000 stairs." he said, smiling when you chuckled for the first time that day at such a ridiculous thing. "well when chan took away my abilities, he took away all of them." he gently wrapped a protective arm around your waist. "i can fly us both up."
You wrapped your arms around his shoulders, holding on tightly as you felt your legs leave the ground. "i won't let you fall, i promise." he whispered into your ear as he made his way up, slow that you wouldn't be too afraid.
"You can open your eyes now." he said once your feet hit solid ground, "see, we're safe." you looked around the new place, it was less extravagant than any castle you lived in, but it wasn't any less beautiful, it was comfortable, something you would love to live in.
"It's beautiful." you said. "but this doesn't explain it, you said this is your home, then what is the hewn city?"
"The hewn city is a dangerous place, but it's still part of night court." he started, "the faeries of hwen city never accepted me as the high-fae, due to me being half illyrian, but the fae of velaris did. so when my dad passed away, he put a spell on velaris, sealing it away from anyone outside of it, letting everyone believe that the hewn city is what night-court really is, and that im the scary evil high fae ." he explained.
"This place is a secret, so please, even if you decide to reject the mating bond, please keep this place a secret, for the faeries safety." he looked at you with soft caring eyes, he wasn't the scary guy everyone thought he was, he got scared to, he cared for people too." you nodded. "i promise." you smiled, grabbing his hand.
"My closest inner circle live here, from the dangers of everything else." he showed you around the house of wind. "meaning?" before you could get a answer, the door flew open.
"Changbin! you're home." A bunch of people crowded into the room, startling you. "it's only been a day, did you finish the secret business that quickly?" a raven haired boy went in for a handshake. "almost." he returned the handshake.
"Your family." everyone turned to you, finally noticing your presence. "yes, my family." he said.
"That's my sister." he pointed to a young girl. "yeonjun and chan but everyone calls him dino, they aren't blood related- hey, blood doesn't matter." the boys interrupted him. "i was gonma say that, if would've let me finish." you smiled.
"And, that's my- his mother." the older woman strided towards you in such a graceful manner. "i knew he wasn't just staying in the hewn city for fun." she smiled, taking your hand into hers, before turning to him.
"You met your mate, and decided to keep her in the hewn city?" everyone was silent again. "i..i didn't want her to reject me, and you guys watch me slowly go insane." he scratched the back of his neck.
"So you accepted?" you swallowed nervously. "well- she's a spring court faerie, her brother is bangchan." changbin quickly spoke up.
There was a collective 'oh'.
"She isn't sure what to do, her brother will never allow this, i wanted to show her this before she makes her decision." you lowered your head in embarrassment.
"I haven't made a decision yet." you finally spoke up. "well do you love my son?" his mother was talking to you again.
"I do feel something for him, my parents died when i was young and my brother has raised me practically all my life, it hasn't been the best, seeing as my predicament, so im not sure what love really is." you told her.
"Well whatever it is im sure you'll figure it out, i can understand where your brother is coming from, his father's parent weren't to happy with me being illyrian, but we didn't let it get in the way of our love, and you shouldn't either." you nodded. "thank you."
"I won't force you to accept my son and marry him just because he's your mate, but please take that into consideration." you could see the sadness in everyones eyes. "i will, i promise."
"You two have a lot to talk about, so we'll leave you be." everyone left the room, leaving you and changbin alone.
He showed you around velaris, the different shops and restaurants, everything, telling you different stories about his family; how he, yeonjun and chan would get in so much trouble, because they would sneak and fly away and eat snacks when they were supposed to be training, or his sister dressing him in her dresses when they were much younger.
"No she didn't!" you giggled as your feet touched the ground of the house of wind once more. "yes, yes she did, whenever she didn't want to play with her dolls, she would dress me up." he said in between laughs.
"Your family is beautiful." you spoke up after a few seconds of silence. "they are, i love them so much." he smiled, his family meant everything to him... you including. "and it's really beautiful here." you walked out on the balcony that over looked velaris.
"This would be our home, you'd be free here." he followed you, caging you in between him and the railing, just like yesterday. "i wouldn't allow you to feel any pain here." he wrapped his arms around your waist. "no worries." he softly kissed your neck. "c-changbin." you moaned soflty, but he shushed you by planting another soft kiss on your neck.
"wouldn't you like that?" kiss "have no worries?" kiss "being my cute little wife, letting me take care of everything?" kiss.
You heart felt like it was gonna burst, you wanted to say yes so bad, nothing was stopping you. "say yes." your head fell on his shoulders as his hands traveled up your dress, squeezing your boobs through the dress.
"don't fight it."
"Changbin, i want you." you wanted him, in everyway possible... you needed him. "i need you so bad."
"Then you have me." he turned you around kissing you, it much softer than last night, but not failing to make your head spin. "let go baby, i got you." he held right below your ass, lifting you up and carrying you to the bed.
"I told you i won't let you fall." he whispered into your ear, leaving a small kiss behind, working his way down your neck. "let's take this off you." he sat you up, unzipping the dress, pulling it over your head, throwing it somewhere. "so pretty, my princess so pretty." he undid your bra, you boobs falling, jiggling at the impact. "so fucking pretty."
He softly pushed you on your back, setting himself in between your legs. "c...changbin, p...please." you mewled impatiently. "i'll give you want princess, be patient." he kissed the inside of your thighs. "you smell amazing, i've been wanting to taste you since the moment i saw you." he pulled your underwear, leaving you fully naked.
He gave your clit a kiss before he spreaded your folds open, licking a stripe up your clit, eating you like a starved man. "fuck changbin!" your hands tangled in his hair, tugging at it everytime he teased the entrance of your cunt. "ple..lease."
changbin was in heaven, you tasted heavenly. "you want more?" the tip of his finger prodding at your entrance, you let out moan, as he slowly slid a finger in, continuing his assault on your pussy, eyes rolling to the back of your head as the knot in your tummy began to tighten.
"C...changbin, im gonna- cum go a head, i want you to cum on my tongue." his lewd words setting you off, grinding down his face as you came. "fuck." you tried to catch your breath. "i knew you taste so sweet." he left you even more breathless.
Changbin stood up to get rid of all his clothes, settling right in between your legs again, his cock standing tall on his abdomen, pink tip leaking. "p..please put it in." you begged so sweetly for him.
He grabbed the base of cock, lining his tip at your puffy cunt, your hips twitched. "look at your pretty cunt all ready for me." he slid right in.
"F...fuck s..so wet, j..just slid right in." he pulled out, pushing into you fully, groaning at the way your pussy tightened around him. "so t...tight, gonna fuck you everyday, until your cunt is used to me." his thrust becoming harsher and needier with every lewd word. "gonna let me stretch you open?"
"yes... yes- fuck!" you couldn't even think with the way he was fucking into. "then say you accept me." he was in the same boat you were, not being able to think, saying anything his brain could muster. "say it!"
"I accept you!" you screamed, it being cut off by his rough kissing. "then cum." he toyed with your clit. "fucking cum for me, my little wife." him calling you his wife set you off and you came with a scream. "g..good fucking girl." his hips stuttered before he pulled out cumming on your abused pussy.
"Oh fuck, i love you." he breathed.
—
After accepting the mating bond, you and changbin lived in pure harming for the next few months. getting to know his family and him better; planning the mating ceremony with changbins mother and sister, and getting to see the dynamic between changbin and his friends, only for him to tell you to keep it a secret from everyone because he was supposed to be a "evil cold head fae", which you agreed to with a laugh.
But with the ceremony approaching soon, you knew you couldn't hold it off anymore; you needed to talk to chan, you need his blessing.
"He's gonna say no, i just know, i mean we have never gotten along." you and changbin stood outside of your old castle. "don't work yourself up, what happened to my "cold evil head fae"." he scoffed.
"You try being on this end." you laughed, grabbing his face, kissing his pouted lips. "come on, remember what you said huh? cute little wife." he kissed his teeth.
"Don't use what i say during sex against me." you smiled, grabbing his hand. "come on my big scary husband." you pushed the huge doors to the castle open.
"Mrs. jung!" you called out to the older lady.
"__? is that you?" you heard the lady rush out of the room. "my heavens, it's you!" the woman who helped raise you, pulled in her embrace. "it's been months, we didn't know what happened, we thought you finally got into the mortal realm and something bad happened " she squeezed you.
"I'm fine, although a lot had happened." her eyes traveled to changbin. she was about to say something, when a voice boomed throughout the whole house.
"The hell are you doing here?" chan stomped down the step, heading straight towards changbin, a girl following behind him trying to stop him. "chan wait a minute." you stepped in front of both of them.
"Did you have something to do with this, did you hurt her?" you pushed him back. "stop it ch-" you suddenly taken aback when his arms wrapped tightly around you. "don't do that again, i thought you finally crossed the border to the mortal realm, i thought you died." he was squeezing you like you'd run away again.
"Before you rip my head off, i'm not here to mess with you." changbin spoke up, chan looked at you, and that back to changbin, putting two and two together.
"Absolutely not."
"I already accepted it."
"I don't care, you won't get my blessing." he stared at you. "Then i'll run away again." he huffed. "you know i will." he looked at changbin and then back at you. "you sure he isn't making you do this, compelling you or something." you scoffed.
"You can't compel someone who is so willing to accept you." you heard the growl in chans throat, turning back eyeing changbin. "sorry, i had to."
"Of course you did." you turned back to your brother. "so do we get your blessing?" he kissed his teeth, huffing. "fine." you hugged him. "whatever, i won't show up to your ceremony." he pouted, side eyeing changbin. "good thing i didn't invite you." changbin just had to tease, but you slapped his arm before chan could do anything.
"I see who wears the pants." you jumped in changing the subject. "who's that girl talking to mrs. jung? and why is lee know all over her like that?" your nose scrunched up in disgust.
Chan sighed, shaking his head "long story, now go, you're finally free from this house." he said. "what about my abilities?" you eyed him. "i'll give them back as a ceremony present, now go- lee know get off of her." chan yelled. "bye." he walked away.
"See was that too bad?" he nodded playfully. "yeah, you invited him to the ceremony." you rolled your eyes. "oh how will you ever live?" you teased, he wrapped his arms around your waist. "happily, because now we get to the best part." he kissed your neck. "what is it? the ceremony?" he nodded. "that too, but i was thinking of something else." another kiss.
"mmh, what is it?"
"fucking you full of my children after the ceremony."

2. What's your total Ao3 word count?
623,307. i hope to hit 1 million words by the end of 2025 >:)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
everything is kookmin these days but once upon a time i wrote other bts pairings and before that i wrote for ikon and got7 (and before that aka before ao3: exo, bap, block b, beast, harry potter, naruto, kingdom hearts....god idk there are a lot of fandoms lol)

no, but i did promise myself to respond to comments again in 2024. starting with the ones left on my latest fic.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
uuhhh...probably i might not make it. simply because it's an mcd fic and spoilers! jk is dead throughout the fic and the fics ends like that...
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
lol i think pretty much all of my fics end with a happy ending aka the pairing ends up together, happily in love.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
100%. lot of fandom drama involved with writing exclusively btm!jm. i've gotten anon msgs telling me to "kms", people hoping i get raped, murdered, my body never found etc etc. you name it, i've seen it. all because they hate that i write btm!jm.
i do think fandom has gotten less insane over this very recently but i am also just way less available and have a much smaller social media presence so lack of access to me has probably reduced the hate, too. plus i'm not actively part of fandom these days so people care about me less, which is great!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
it's my favourite thing to write! i do need to get back into it though...also was not aware there are types of smut? i guess the rly nasty kind rjfkndk i like pretty much most kinks/fetishes and think it's fun to explore them.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
i have written three crossover fics! >:) two were bobby (ikon)/jimin and one was jaebum (got7)/jimin.
craziest one was probably oh boy, don't be shy since it's basically bobby finds jimin's dildo and then dp's jimin :D
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
multiple times.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes, i used to allow translations but it got to a point where people would ask to translate and then never come back to link their translations. plus, i've had people link me to fics that were translated without my permission.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
yes! two of them :)

there is also a collab fic i rly want to write with my friend bee, which i hope to finish, but idk if we will. i just rly love writing hurt/comfort jgfkd
16. What are your writing strengths?
i'm very good at writing emotion. it's important to me that the reader feels and understands what my characters are feeling and feels that connection to the fic. i'm also good at writing porn for this reason. i'm also very good at worldbuilding and i will put in the research and care to ensure my worldbuilding makes sense and is as accurate as possible and failing that, as believable as possible. moreover, i am just a dedicated researcher. because i write for a korean boyband, it's important to me that i do the research into korean history, customs, current social etiquette etc. it's actually a huge pet peeve of mine to see people just make stuff up or have the fic be entirely westernised/americanised but the boys are all in korea.
i think i'm also good at consistent characterization and at pacing/flow in my work. these are both rly important to me and i've worked on them a lot over the years. i think this also lends to me being pretty good at plotting a fic out so that it's not long and drawn out or that i'm not taking the time to explore certain aspects i've introduced. balance is important!
i think i'm also pretty versatile. i can write different genres pretty easily (eg. i love writing action sequences and am good at making sure the pacing is rly fast and then slowing down when something romantic or suspenseful happens) and am good at like setting a certain vibe/tone for a fic.
finally, i am dedicated to improving. i don't think fanfic writers necessarily owe this to readers (fic writing being a hobby) but writing is really important to me and so it's important to me that i improve and challenge myself.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
i need to read more! i need to expand my vocabulary and learn how to better write metaphors. my imagery could use work, my dialogue definitely needs work. i want to write my characters with a more unique voice versus everyone kind of sounding the same. i want to make sure each character has their own "quirks" the way real people do.
i need to learn to write better description, too, as i think setting can do a lot for setting the mood/tone for a fic. a lot of my short-comings just come down to me reading too little so i need to read more and i need to dissect my favourite fics and books and pinpoint what i found compelling about them.
i also need to challenge myself to write more plot-heavy fics and to be unafraid to write characters who are unlikable or appear irredeemable. i want to write fic that has one main plot but a million little subplots and i want all of these things to come together coherently. i want my work to explore themes that are important to me!
i don't care so much about grammar but probably, i need to get better at that too haha
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
since i write fic for bangtan who are korean, i don't think it's ever necessary to write dialogue in another language. it comes across as cringey (derogatory) and borders on racist imo
19. First fandom you wrote for?
uh, beyblade? lolololol
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
i think it's my favourite rn because i just finished writing it lol but sorry about the blood in your mouth (i wish it were mine)
i am also very fond of i thought he remembered me; he took me back so tenderly because i love writing space aus! sci-fi is one of my fav genres!

my soul chose yours (and a soul just doesn't forget that)
guard!Jinyoung x assassin!reader x king!Jaebum
wc: 3.6k+
you’re about to get the upper hand on a mission when things go horribly wrong. Jinyoung is there to pick up the pieces, but Jaebum always gets to be the hero that swoops in to save the day.
a/n: this could become a series, but idk. if it does become a series, the next parts may end up being shorter depending on how the storyline progresses.
The ground is cold and hard, pebbles press against your cheek and your skin burns as blood hisses against the concrete beneath your body.
You’d laugh but your core felt like a searing knife had been left in it, pulsating forceful energy through your blood, curdling every area into sap. The pain was excruciating and sent angry sparks down your spine.
Since your face was contorted in a wicked display of agony, you settled on a smirk and tried to roll away from the boot you knew was coming for your back.
You weren’t fast enough, of course, but it was worth a shot.
Your body swung to the other side and a groan escaped your lips as you huddled into a fetal position, attempting to protect your broken body from the next attack. It wouldn’t matter, you knew that much, but trying was better than just accepting death.
“I’ve asked you once and I’ll ask you again,” your assailant spat, words colliding harshly with your sore ears. “Where is his vault? Who’s assassins were sent after me?”
You scoffed. As if you would ever indulge him in such royal secrets. You were directly connected to the king, his weapon and blade, his bullet whenever he decided to pull the trigger, but to this man, you were just an advisor. Just as to everyone else concerned with your “dealings with the court.”
You knew he was following you for a while before he made his move, crashing his car into yours and dragging you into a conveniently waiting van before dumping you on the side of the road. Of course, he wanted to know all of the king’s secrets; this man was the king’s prime target. He’s stolen more than his fair share of gold and jewels from everyday citizens.
His death was already coming. As of right now, he’s just running from destiny.
And who’s to say that destiny wasn’t already staring him in the face, in the form of your oh so frail and weak body laying so helplessly on the ground.
Please.
“Oh, Marcus,” You grinned, teeth gleaming like fangs against the moonlight, face bloody and dirty like a warrior emerging victorious from battle. “You already know.”
His ferocity dialed down a moment as he registered the calm now taking over your features, how the pain originally displayed suddenly vanished into vapor, how your performance changed like shadows of the moon.
Then he jumped feet away from you, scrambling to rectify his mistake.
You’d be gracious, as gracious as you could muster at the moment with a split lip, bruised jaw, three broken ribs, a slash across the back, and a knife in the thigh. It’d take a saint to forgive all of that and you weren’t necessarily the saint type, but exceptions can be made.
If the king still wanted him alive then you would leave him still breathing at least. No promises on his continued condition of life.
You slipped a dagger from your shoe, your torso sore in the process. As the flat of the blade pressed against your palm, hidden from his frightened eyes, you laid on the ground and waited, waited for him to start the babble in which he would try to bargain for his life.
It started with a few pleases, a few apologies, him saying how much his life was worth in gold or jewelry or cars or houses, how he’ll become a changed man, on how he would return everything and never steal again.
At this point, you sighed, not necessarily from his boring speech—you’d tuned that out minutes ago—but from the exertion you knew was coming. Getting off the ground was going to be…painful. Blood still seeped out of that knife wound in your thigh and if you took it out the bleeding would become a waterfall.
And besides the very obvious piece of metal shooting out of your black pants, your face began to throb and taking breaths began to hurt more than it did a few minutes ago. The adrenaline was beginning to fade along with the endorphins that took the edge off the pain.
Getting to Marcus, hurting him, even fighting him, was going to cause a lot of discomfort. It was going to suck and that’s why, as much as you had no problem maiming him, you were reluctant to get off the ground.
You put your fist, knuckle down, onto the ground, keeping the hand with the blade positioned behind you. On your good knee, you braced your weight, struggling to stand while keeping your injured leg as straight as possible to avoid more tears.
Wetness bloomed near your eyes but you fought it, holding onto the spikes of stabbing suffering shooting through your body. It was a rock to hold on to and a great motivator as you made it to your feet, making sure your mouth stayed clamped shut.
No whimpers, no pain, no fear.
Marcus backed up, taking more steps until he was fully pressed against his car. The van that had originally dumped you there was long gone.
It was just you and him now.
You let the dagger fly, hitting him in the exact same spot that your own injury occurred. He cried out as he hit the ground, his hands shaking around where the dagger stuck out from his leg. “If you think that’s bad,” you pulled another knife from the back of your pants, “you should see what a broken rib feels like.”
He whimpered against the car, “please, please.” In all honesty, the second blade was just for show. You weren’t going to do anything with it and you had already lost interest in beating him senseless as you were getting off the ground. Anything you really wanted to do required too much movement for the injuries you sustained. Keeping your voice steady through the pain was already a challenge.
You gritted your teeth as you hobbled closer, your stomach pulsating pain and your leg felt like fire and stone, hot and heavy.
You stopped a few steps in front of him and looked down. “You will be found. No one will come to save you because everyone who could is already gone. Run all you want, hide all you want, but the crown already knows every move you will ever make, and, just when you think you’ve found freedom, you will be thrown in a cage.”
He cowered away from you, tilting his head downward, tears slipping down his cheeks. Marcus was weak. You always knew that even when you tailed him.
You threw the dagger into his car door, so hard it stuck into the metal, so near his head that it almost took off some of his hair. He cried out.
You didn’t wait to see what he might say. You simply turned around and hobbled away as best you could, walking down the highway until you could find a car that could take you far away from here and as close to the palace as you could get.
Your breaths were beginning to become harsh, angry spits of air and pain that could be heard within a few feet. They weren’t quiet; people would begin to understand how hard you were fighting for your life.
It became pretty obvious that if you didn’t find a doctor or somebody soon, you would collapse into nothing, a heap on the ground withering in pain and waiting for the crows to circle in.
Your teeth ground together as your determination kicked in.
You wouldn’t die out here.
In hindsight, you could have taken the man’s car, but you wanted him to be terrified of freedom, to feel like as much as he felt in control, he was just as much out of it.
You wanted the feeling to linger. Pain is only a motivator till it fades away, but fear follows everyone everywhere. There’s no safety in fear.
You started to move, willing your leg forward, just a little bit further and further and further until you would find someone who’d be willing to help you. Then it would all be over. Then you could rest.
Then you could finally feel—
You only heard an echo of a shot before you felt it rip through your stomach.
You paused.
Then, you collapsed onto the ground.
Your stomach started burning, a little fire crawling through your abdomen, beginning to radiate outwards. You didn’t have to put your hands near your stomach to know that there would be blood, that it would slowly seep through your clothing and onto the ground before you died.
Your cheek felt cold again, just as it did when you were beaten to the ground earlier.
How fitting.
How simply fitting that this would be how it all ended, exactly like it began.
You weren’t sorry, remorseful, or bitter. You did things your way, you’d lived the life that you wanted to live. You wouldn’t change a thing.
You lay there, gasping a little when the blood seeped through your lungs and into your windpipe, as you tasted iron on your tongue while you bit your cheek to stop from screaming. Someone would find the shooter eventually, but you wouldn’t be there to see it.
Shame.
You laughed as your vision began to blur and as the world slowly slipped away.
…
Jinyoung found you after about two minutes.
To say that he froze would be an understatement. He was in complete shock. It took him about another thirty seconds to get out of the car and run to you, the medical response team was already underway, flipping you over, trying to get a look at the injuries and damage.
He was still stuck.
You didn’t look right. Everything about this was wrong. He’d just seen you, a couple of hours ago, chatting up the ambassador of France, looking glowing, radiant even.
In fact, Jinyoung was having trouble keeping his eyes off of you all night. Then again, that wasn’t out of the ordinary.
But to see you broken, unresponsive, bloody beyond all measure, that terrified him. His heart started beating again once he began to move and he only remembered to breathe after his throat began to burn.
But the burning intensified as he fought to keep everything at bay.
You knew this was going to happen, you’d phoned him telling him to start tracking your device, a small ring on your pinky finger, but he hadn’t realized that you were in this much trouble.
You’d never been this hurt, not in a million years. And as Jinyoung raced over to you, his anger began to rise along with an instinctive urge to never let you out of his sight again.
He dropped to his knees near your head, gently reaching out to cradle your neck in his hands, your hair fanning out over his thighs as he propped you up against him. He saw the swelling, the cuts, the scrapes on your cheek and then spared a glance to your body and saw silver emerging out of your clothes.
His anger rose, but also fear. He knew these injuries were serious and when he saw the vermillion color of blood staining your white shirt and dark-colored blazer, he wanted to cradle you closer, press his nose against your skin and transfer his energy to you.
He would accept losing you. Never.
“How bad?” He gritted through his teeth, trying to keep everything steady, everything locked in place.
The nurse looked down, still trying to find the bullet with gloves and her tool. “Very bad.” She kept her tone neutral but he could see how hard she was fighting against her emotions too. You were always good to everyone you met and it made sense to see her upset. It made Jinyoung’s emotions magnify.
He swallowed the ball in his throat down, brushing the hair out of your face, taking a moment to be selfish with you. It was the only moment he allowed himself, before focusing back on the team.
He took a sharp breath. They needed to move you, get you somewhere safe where real medical treatment could happen.
“I know what you want to ask, and the answer is shortly. We need to stop the bleeding and start a transfusion.” The nurse breathed out, the bullet caught between the metal of her tools. She turned and dropped it into a tray, exchanging the forceps for gauze. “Here.”
Jinyoung took the end of the gauze as she pulled and began to wrap it around your torso. “Mr. Park, would you lift, please?” She turned to her colleagues. “Moving.”
He grasped your shoulders, moving his palms to your back as pulled you upward, being as gentle as possible. Your face stopped near his chest, your nose pressed against his neck.
He tried his best to ignore his desire to pull you even closer.
The nurse began to wrap the gauze all around, pulling it taunt. You stirred, a moan escaping your mouth as your features contorted in discomfort. Jinyoung held you slightly tighter as he put a hand to your cheek. “(name)?”
You didn’t respond.
“(name)? We’re getting you somewhere safe. Just hold on, okay?” He only noticed how soft and pleading his voice was when the nurse turned to look at him with something like sympathy and understanding in her eyes.
She looked away and nodded. “We’re ready to move, Mr. Park.”
He nodded numbly as his hands held onto your shoulders. “Ready.”
The nurse began the count down and they picked you up, carrying you back to the car.
He dimly remembers volunteering to sit with you in the back, too distracted with his fear of you slipping away before he gets to tell you everything. Your face is tilted up the sky and Jinyoung has his arm wrapped around your body, a hand stroking your hair as your head rests across his lap.
“Hold on,” He whispers. “Hold on.”
…
Jaebum shoved every bit of paper he could find off of his desk.
He was distraught. Fire coursed through his veins at the thought of someone hurting you, someone getting that close to killing you, and he couldn’t be there.
He couldn’t get to you, couldn’t protect you, couldn’t get anywhere close to saving you because of his damn meeting. And now you were barely holding onto life, being driven to the palace to be placed under intensive care.
He felt like a failure. He’d failed you.
All because of his duty to the throne.
He crumpled to the floor, holding his head in his hands.
Indeed, heavy is the head that wears the crown.
…
“My king.” The servant bowed to Jaebum as he strode through the doors of the medical center, searching for you, needed to see you still breathing to calm himself down again. He’d tried to keep his pace steady but he didn’t care. It was you. It was you. “How may I be of service?”
“Where is Ambassador (last name)?” His eyes burned bright and he did his best to keep his emotions in check, a bit of irritation jumping out of his control.
The servant looked it up. “Room A5, I’ll escort you.”
Jaebum could only nod. He knew the escort wouldn’t be fast enough, but he agreed. It was better to appear as though everything was fine rather than alter the whole palace that something was amiss.
He tried to keep his breathing under control, his steps and gait contained to his normal stride. It was difficult and he fought every urge to sprint. Crescent-shaped imprints would linger on his palms.
“Here we are, your majesty.” He bowed before motioning him inside.
It was chaos, absolute chaos. A flurry of bodies moved around and people were barking orders at each other. It took Jaebum several minutes before he found you and his knees nearly gave out at the sight of you.
You were attached to an oxygen tank, an IV, and a machine for blood transfer. Your face was maimed with cuts, swelling, injuries, and your clothes, your clothes. All of the blood.
Jaebum almost ran over to you. Almost.
The only reason he didn’t was that there were too many witnesses, too many opportunities for gossip and rumors. He didn’t want that. Not for you, not right now.
He spotted his captain in the corner, eyes dead-looking, completely glazed over. Jaebum made his way over to his corner.
“Where?” He growled and Jinyoung took a moment to look up at his king before answering.
“Somewhere ten minutes from the mountains, along a twisted highway.” His voice sounded dead and his eyes were red. Jaebum studied him for a moment longer before watching you and your heartbeat. The rise and fall of your chest calming him down moment by moment.
“Thank you.” Jaebum worked out without a hint of anger or sadness, just relief.
Jinyoung’s eyes slid to his, alive with emotion for the first time since he walked into the room. His eyebrows scrunched with confusion.
“For being there when I couldn’t.” Jinyoung’s gaze softened for a second before locking up, walls coming down.
He could only nod before dissociating again.
Jaebum sat there, standing by his friend, watching you fight for your life.
A mantra, simple but heavy weighed on his mind, itching to shoot out to you.
Stay. Stay. Stay.
…
Your whole body hurt. The only that was safe to move without the desire to scream in pain was your neck as you assessed the state of your body.
It was quiet and the lights were dimmed. You took a breath, wincing. Those bruised ribs and bullet wound would make the next few weeks difficult, but you’d live to fight another day.
You paused for a moment. How’d they find me? You thought back to the moment you’d fallen, trying to stretch into the future, waiting to find a few moments after. But there was nothing but black.
Sitting up was not an option in your condition, so you angled your neck to the side, opting to see something new, but someone was there.
You looked down, his face was pressed against your bed, his arms folded underneath his cheek.
You coughed lightly, hoping to gently stir them out of their sleep. When their eyes popped to yours, you knew immediately who it was.
You froze for a moment. “Your majesty.” You breathed.
“(name).” His eyes were just as wide as yours as he came out of his own slumber. “You’re awake. You’re okay.”
“Yeah.” You looked away from his direct stare, a jolt of heat jumping down your spine. “It takes a bit more than that to kill me.” You said it like you hadn’t considered your own death however long it was ago.
He looked sad. You were confused. Why was he even here in the first place. Did he have other duties to attend to than be here with you?
“I’m sorry.” He reached for your hand and held it within his own. Your breathing slowed down. “I failed you.”
“What do you mean?” You looked to find him hanging his head in sorrow, like a wounded puppy.
“I should have never have sent you there.” His eyes were on fire, rooting you into place, stopping your breathing so as not to stir the embers even more. “I never should have let you go by yourself.”
“We didn’t know. It’s okay.” You willed the fire to go away, hoping that your soothing tone would calm him down. “If I’d have known there were other operatives, I would have suggested another method. We made a mistake. It’s alright.”
He was quiet for several seconds. “You almost died. I almost lost you.” He brought your hand to his forehead. “I almost lost everything.”
Your free hand reached out to stroke his hair, your abdomen screaming at you. “I’m still here.”
Your heard his sniffles and your heart grew, a soft warmth moved through your chest. “Come here.” He looked to you with his bloodshot eyes and began moving, slipping off his boots, and slowly arranging himself on the bed next to you, placing his head atop yours, pulling you into him.
“Never again.” His voice was low and steady like he was speaking a vow that could never be broken.
You smirk, resting his chest against his beating heart, calming yourself down as you drifted off to sleep.
…
Jinyoung felt like he was stabbed through his chest.
He saw you two together. The king and his dagger. How perfect you fit together, how protectively he held you.
Maybe you liked the power, maybe there was a bond you two shared, but Jinyoung couldn’t help but believe that should have been him. It should have been you and him.
You both knew what it was like to be fashioned by steel, a weapon at someone else’s disposal. You’d confided in each other, trusted each other.
But you chose him and Jaebum knew it too. That’s why he hovered, always watching, always making sure you never got too close to him.
Always in the way.
His heart shattered, even more, when he saw the look of bliss as your face was buried into Jaebum’s chest, right near his neck, right where you were propped against him not six hours ago.
If only he’d waited in your room longer, if only he hadn’t traded with the king. Maybe, just maybe….
Jinyoung turned around and stalked away, too tired to pour over what-ifs, too tired to really care. If you wanted to fall for the king, who was he to stop you?
He just wouldn’t watch you fall in love with someone that wasn’t him.

[3:56am]
jaebum is conscientious enough to dampen the sound of the closing door as he enters the apartment. what he doesn’t know is that you’re wide awake. you lie on your side in your dark room, ears sensitive even to the light thud of his shoes being placed on the shoe rack by the doorway.
slow footsteps sound from down the hall and when he comes to a stop you know he’s reached the kitchen. the fridge opens and closes in quick succession with a sticky sound. you can imagine him taking long, much-needed gulps from the bottle of water you’re sure he just grabbed. he had probably been running on nothing but coffee the whole night.
when you hear a chair scrape lightly against the floor, you finally stir. you turn your torso towards the door and wait for his reaction. he must have seen it by now. the cake you had left sitting on the kitchen table, the two candles that adorn the top having long been blown out.
you hear the exhaustion in his sigh and you feel the heaviness of his limbs as his empty bottle meets the wood of the table. you know he no longer has the mental bandwidth to try and work out if it was his birthday or yours this time.
he sits a few moments longer until the creaking of his well-used chair signals he’s on the move. at the sound of his footsteps drawing near, you face the far wall again and squeeze your eyes shut.
you feel his presence at your back as he enters the bedroom. he heads straight for the bathroom where he hastily brushes his teeth and splashes water on his face.
fabric rustles through his hair as he pulls off his shirt on his way to the bed. he pulls the comforter aside with a snap and you feel the mattress sink under his weight. the sheets crinkle as he adjusts his position, finally settling facing the doorway.
then, silence.
the two of you lay stone-still backs towards one another. the small distance in between is filled with the remnants of lasting disappointments and the echoes of bitter words.
but there’s no fight tonight. you’re both much too tired.
so you sleep. an empty dreamless sleep.

Misguided Ghosts| Im Jaebeom
Jaebeom x Reader | Jackson x Reader.
Genre: Angst/Fluff.
Concept: After a terrible accident, Jae is left in a coma. Five months of hoping for the best, but expecting the worst, you get a mysterious guest.
Warning: Talk of grief, death, and car accidents.
A/N: WOW I AM SAD. I wrote this for @listlessmaenads birthday gift, and I’m sorry it’s late. This story kind of (really) fucked a bitch up. Jaebeom out here making me feel things, rude ass.
- - - - -
“How was work today, Y/N?” Jaebeoms nurse set down a tray of food for you.
In most cases it was the patients that were getting the food, but seeing as the patient had been in a coma for five months, you were the one who received the food. You had become accustomed to the taste of the Luke warm chicken nuggets and corn. It was almost comforting when you had a hard day at work.
“It’s been the same,” and by same, you meant the same sympathetic glances, the gentle pats on the shoulder. People acted like he had already died, that you should be mourning the loss of your fiancé. He was still alive, even if it was with the help of some machines.
“Just keep your head up,” she offered an encouraging flash of her teeth, “when people don’t understand what’s happening, they resort to being overly sympathetic. They think those little gestures will help.”
“I know their intentions are nothing but pure. It doesn’t make it any better, though.” The tip of your spoon scarped against the bottom of your jello container, the red dyed juice splashed over the rim when you dropped the empty plastic onto your table.
The conversation seemed to evaporate into the air as she moved around Jae’s bed. It was quite the elegant dance of checking his vitals, reading over the chart to make sure the day nurse hadn’t left any notes, and adjusting his bedding to make sure his body temperature didn’t drop for any reason.
“He’s all comfortable, and set up for the night. I’ll be back to check in a few hours. If you need anything —,” she stopped mid-sentence when you gave her a knowing smile. It was the same, well rehearsed, script that all nurses told you. Except she actually meant it, “Tell Jacks I said hi,” she teased, all to knowledgeable of the goings on in your life.
You watched as she shut the door behind her, leaving you in the room with Jae. You sat for moment, listening to the steady beat of his heart monitor, and the machine that helped him to breathe. You looked over his face, all the outward wounds had healed, if it wasn’t for his life support, he would have looked like he was just sleeping. Some days, you imagined that he was, you pretended that in a few hours he would wake up, like he had been napping. You knew better though, and make believing only made things worse when he didn’t actually wake up.
You wouldn’t allow yourself to dwell too much on it, or else you’d send yourself into a spiral, so instead you took the doctors suggestion. You reached into your bag, digging around to find the poetry book that sat at the bottom of your purse. “Where were we,” you said softly, flipping the pages till you found your bookmark - a picture of Jae smiling at you from across the table at your favorite restaurant.
You held the book in one hand, your thumb expanding over the middle of the spine, stopping the the pages from folding over on to one another. Your other hand was occupied by your chin resting against your palm, being propped up by the chair you were sitting in, “Okay,” you breathed, peeking over the edge of your book, secretly wishing that one time you did that, his eyes would be open.
“For Katrina’s Sun Dial, by Henry Van Dyke -
Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is Eternity.” The words held no meaning pressed into the paper of your book, but as they hung in the air, you felt the weight of them all to heavy on your chest.
You shook you head, swallowing the lump that had started to build in your throat. It was a sob that you refused to let surface, it was the cry you reserved for the very worst possible outcome, a cry you never hoped to feel. You closed the book, you couldn’t read anymore, afraid that another poem would set you over the edge.
After shoving the book back into your blackhole of a bag, you pulled your legs on to the chair, curling into yourself, wishing you could fill the hole in your chest, the way you crammed your personal belongings into your purse. Your eyelids suddenly felt like they were being dragged down by anchors, and you gladly fell into the welcoming arms of sleep.
You weren’t sure how long you’d been asleep, but you knew it had been awhile, because you could no longer see the sun sinking below the mountains, but you could see the silver sliver of moonlight reflecting off of Jae’s heart monitor. Your eyes surveyed the room, catch a glimpse of Jackson sitting in the corner, the light from his phone illuminating the tip of his nose, and whites of his eyes.
“How long have you been here?” The hoarse sound of your voice shocked you, but even more so it scared the living daylights out of Jackson. His hands fumbling with his phone, almost dropping it on the floor, but he was quick to snap his thighs shut, catching his phone in the crack of his legs.
“Couldn’t you have made a stretching noise like a normal person, letting me know you had woken up,” the breathiness in his voice made you release a sleepy laugh.
“Sorry, next time I’ll make sure to make some noise when I wake up,” he looked over at you with a thankful smile, “Wuss,” you tried to whisper under your breath.
“Hey! I heard that,” he reached back, grabbing the pillow he was using behind his back, chucking it across the room to hit you square in the chest.
“I didn’t say anything,” you tried to lie, but Jackson heard you, and knew you far too well to be able to lie to him.
He snorted, setting his phone on the windowsill. You watched as he pushed himself off the chair, making his way over to you. You knew what he wanted, and to be honest, you needed it.
“Come on, up,” he hooked his hand around your elbow, pulling you up - your bones popping in protest of the new movement.
Once you were standing, not very sturdy, but standing nonetheless, he wrapped you in his arms. His chin rested on the top of your head, and your nose pressing into his chest, taking a deep breath. He did this every time he saw you, at first it drove you crazy, but now it was something you looked forward to.
“Anything new?” He mumbled, moving his chin so he could bury his face in your hair, taking a deep breath. To him, you were the literal meaning of ‘a breath of fresh air.’
“No, nothing…” the same answer for the last five months, and you feared it would always be the only answer.
Since you were so close to his chest, you could hear the faint beating for his heart, and when you responded, his heart rate slowed. His grip on you only tightening, as if he was trying to protect you from the pain.
“You should go home for a little bit. I’ve only been here for about an hour. I’ll be here the rest of the night. If anything happens, you know I’ll call you,” pressing a kiss on to the crown of your head.
“Are you sure? I don’t want to just leave you here alone,” you brought your face up, looking at him.
“I’m not alone. I have lots to tell JB about,” and he was being honest. You had walked into the room many times, to find Jackson at Jae’s bed, one hand on Jae’s arm, talking about his day. You’d even caught him talking about a girl - Jackson always used to tell jae about his girl problems. It turns out he still did.
“I’ll have my phone on loud, don’t hesitate to call me at any time,” you reluctantly pulled away, and he reluctantly lets you go.
You gathered your belongings, Jackson standing at the door with your jacket, “Don’t forget this… again,” he teased, helping you slip it on arm by arm.
“Thank you jacks, for everything.” You pressed a quick kiss on his cheek, walking out of the room.
Jae’s nurse waved at you from the nurses station, giving you a sweet smile. As you entered the elevator, you waved back. You looked up to the red numbers above your head, watching them get lower until you reached the ground floor. You had questioned whether or not you were ready to drive again, but Uber’s would take too long to get to you and then to the hospital if anything were to happen, so you were forced to drive again.
You were lucky, the roads were basically a ghost town. The normal thirty minute drive it took you to get home, was only a cool twenty tonight. When you opened the door, Nora was already at your feet, weaving in and out of your legs, meowing loudly for some attention. You bent down, “Well hello,” you cooed, and she purred in response, pushing her nose against your face.
You always made sure she had plenty of food and water every morning before you left, and your sweet fifteen year old neighbor would come over to give her some much needed attention. You rounded the living room, walking over to the answering machine. You had two new messages, they were both from medical bill collectors, you didn’t pay much attention to them, letting them play out till they were done.
“What should I eat Nora?” You glanced at her, and she nudged your cheek with one of her paws, “Hmm, I don’t know if I want that,” you answered her as if she had responded to you.
Your feet carried you to the kitchen, the second message on the machine was playing in the background as you pulled open the fridge. You’re not sure what you expected, you hadn’t done any grocery shopping in weeks - hell, months. You sighed looking at the carry out containers, and half drank bottled water.
“Looks like I’ll be having sleep for dinner again,” you set Nora down, letting the fridge door close on its own. You pressed the delete button as you walked by the answering machine again, not even bothering to look and make sure you didn’t have any other messages.
The house felt cold without Jae, and no matter how high you turned the heat up or how many blankets you flung around yourself, none of them could ever mimick the warmth that Jaebeom radiated. Maybe it was because it wasn’t his skin that was warm; it was his heart, it was his smile, or the way he laughed at the variety show he had watched a million times, it was in the way he whispered sweetly to Nora. His warmth came from his love.
You leaned against the wall, only inches away from your bedroom, but you weren’t ready to go In there yet. It wasn’t like you hadn’t been in there since he had been in the hospital, but it was just too much of him, without him actually being there. You sank to the floor, pulling your knees to your chest. You were fine all day, you were fine at the hospital, but when you were really and truly alone, you were anything but okay.
“I’m so sorry,” you whispered, brokenly. You couldn’t recognize your own voice, because you were just a fragment of yourself without him. “It should have been me,” the air was starting to feel thicker, harder to fill your lungs with. Your eyes were burning, the tears that spilled over onto your cheek gave you no warning, neither did the choked gasp for air that passed through your lips.
You hid your face in the space of your knees, crying freely, letting the hole in your heart spread throughout your body, swallowing you into an ocean of despair. Your cries coming in waves, pulling you deeper into the current, making it near impossible to find the surface, and you were fine to just sink and never come up for air again. You didn’t want to be in a world where he didn’t exist.
After what seemed like an eternity, your tears started to dry up for the night, you began to believe there wasn’t enough water in your body to support the amount of crying you had done in the last five months. You knew if jae would have seen you this torn up over him, he’d start to hate himself, and for once you thanked god that he wasn’t around to see you like this.
You were barely able to push yourself back up from the floor, little black spots started to plague your vision, which meant you really needed some sleep. Your limbs dragged from the spot you were in, all the way to your bedroom. You didn’t bother to change, or shower. You were exhausted, and the sweet call of sleep was singing your name. You let yourself collapse on the bed, your feet hanging off the edge, but the moment your face met the pillow, you were out.
Another dreamless night - you had stopped dreaming of the accident a couple weeks ago, which gave the opportunity to sleep, and actually find some peace in the darkness behind your eyelids.
You were awake, but you weren’t all that excited to open your eyes and face another day. So you just stayed there, listening to the constant hum of the ceiling fan above, or the water moving through the pipes of your house.
“I know you’re awake, baby.” You froze, every muscle in your body tensing, and your blood running cold. There was someone else in your bed with you, but you swore you would have felt the bed dip. You always did, any time Jae moved, you felt it. There was no way in hell that you would have missed your bed moving.
You thought that maybe if you sat still, and kept pretending to sleep, that it would go away. Possibly you were just having sleep paralysis, it had been years since you had an episode, but it could have been the stress of everything building up.
There was silence again, not even the sound of someone breathing. You tried your hardest to crack you eyelid open in a way that didn’t give away that you were looking around. It was difficult to see, but what you could make out was just your empty room. You took a deep breath, allowing your eyes to finally break open.
Nothing. No one. All alone. You rolled over to your back, you were set on staring at the ceiling for another hour before you were to get up, but out of the corner of your eye you saw a figure laying beside you. You practically flung yourself to the floor with a loud scream. You were ready to run out of your house as fast as possible, escaping whoever this intruder was.
“Oh my god!” The voice called out, before you could see their feet from under the bed. You were frantic, looking for something to protect yourself with.
The foot steps got louder and closer, you were out of idea’s, and without a weapon, so you did what any normal person would do. You curled up in a ball, shielding your face with your hand.
“Take anything you want, just please, don’t hurt me,” your body was trembling with fear, fully expecting your last minutes to be you in the fetal position.
“Hurt you? Y/N…” the voice was smooth, calming. If this was a murderer, they were by far the most comforting murderer out there, “Wait… you can see me? Can you hear me? Y/N, baby, look at me.”
Baby.
You recognized the inflection of the voice, and the way the first B was harsher than the second. You gradually spread your index and middle finger apart. There he was, the tall figure who was standing beside you, kneeled down.
“C-can you see me?” Jaebeoms words stuttered over his tongue.
“Jae?” Your body started to relax. Your knees pulling away from your chest, and your legs extending towards the wall opposite of your head.
“Holy fuck,” he whispered, falling on his butt across from you, “I don’t understand,” he was talking to himself.
You still couldn’t believe what you were seeing. You had to be dreaming, there was no way in hell that he was in here with you, that he was talking to you. You rubbed your eyes, taking a deep breath before opening them again. You fully expected him to be gone, but he was still there, lost in his own thoughts.
“If you’re here… does that mean you’re dead?” The realization started to flood your system with panic. Your cheeks began to heat up, and your eyes burning with the familiar sting of tears.
Your words brought him back to the moment, and he quickly shook his head, “no, baby. I’m not dead. Im just, I don’t know, I’m stuck between here and there.”
“There?” The tears you tried to stop had already started, and now there was no way for you to stop them, they had a mind of their own.
He reached out to touch you, to cup your cheeks and take away the tears, but all you felt was a very minuscule tingle on your cheek, that was gone as fast as it was there. A strangled gasp leaving his mouth agape.
“You can hear me, see me, but we can’t touch,” he looked down at his hand as if it had betrayed him.
You still sat on the floor, wordlessly staring at this version of Jae. You must be going crazy, there was no other explanation. Although you could see the way his lashes brushed over his cheek, or the way his cheeks made his eyes disappear when his nose scrunched. He must have felt you staring at him, because he looked up from his hands.
“Hi…” his voice almost inaudible, and in that moment your felt warm. The constant chill of being alone had diminished, and you figured out that he was really there, he brought the sun back into your dark world.
“Hey,” he watched as you scooted closer to him, the small affectionate action was enough to make him smile.
“I’m sorry I scared you,” His shoulders bounced slightly when he laughed. The sound almost brought you back to tears.
“It’s okay. I just wasn’t expecting you to be there.”
“In all honestly, I wasn’t expecting you to see me. I’ve been here since the third week of being in a coma.”
“So… you’ve just been watching me?” And all at once, you remembered all the times you had broken down, how many times you cursed gods name - because you had to blame someone for this, Jae didn’t deserve this.
As if he was reading your mind, he turned his head to watch you go through all the sleepless nights, the tears, the fits of anger, “I-I felt so useless. I had to sit here, watching you suffer. The nights you would call out my name, as if you were asking me to come home,” his voice broke off, the quietest of crippled gasps left his chest.
You hadn’t even recognized that tears had started to wash over your cheeks, till one lonely drop stopped at your top lip. While you were stuck in that hospital room, watching him, he was stuck in limbo watching you hurt.
“It’s not your fault, you know that. None of this is your fault.” You gestured between the two of you.
“It’s no ones fault,” a lie. It was your fault, and you knew that.
You sat silently, staring at him. What a beautiful man he was. It was never lost on you, just how lucky you were to have him, but since the accident, you’d really realized how much you needed him in your life. You could remember the life you had before him, and it was a life that you never wanted to have to live again.
“Let’s go somewhere,” he piped up, reeling you back into reality, and out of your own thoughts.
“Go somewhere?” The back of your hand dragged across your cheek, wiping away the stray tears.
“Yeah. There’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to take you, but never have. When’s a better time than now?”
“Oh, I don’t know, when you’re not just an apparition of yourself. I think that would probably be peak time to go.”
He snorted loudly, shaking his head. “Only you would complain about the way I spent time with you,” he teased.
“Uh, no. I think most people would find it ridiculous to go somewhere with their fiancés restless soul,” a laugh bubbled from your chest.
“Soul schmoul,” he flicked his hand, dismissing your very logical response.
That’s how you ended up in the car with Jae in your passenger seat, singing along to the radio, while his body was motionless in a hospital bed. Every so often you would have to remind yourself that it wasn’t really him, it wasn’t someone you could hug or kiss.
“Are you paying attention? I don’t want to get lost,” you pout, turning down the radio.
“I know exactly where we are, just keep driving,” and so you did, you just kept driving - silently watching him from the corner of your eye.
You could see his fingers twitch on his thigh, pulling into a fist and extending to smooth out his pants. He was itching for something, like an addict on the search for his next high. It wasn’t until he placed his arm in between the two seats, that you realized what he wanted to do. He wanted to reach out and touch your leg, to feel your skin under his finger tips. He couldn’t though, he couldn’t because he wasn’t really there. It was just another harsh reminder of the reality of the situation.
You’d be lying if you said that it didn’t hurt you. No, it didn’t hurt you, it killed you. Having the man you loved with all your heart, sitting in the passenger seat, and not being able to touch him.
“Your next right,” He jeered his head towards the window, indicating where he wanted you to go.
The trees were heavy, the tops of the branches on each side of the path, reached out touching one another. A sick joke from a god that couldn’t be real. You could catch glimpses of the sky between the crowded greenery. It was less than mile before you hit an opening in the woods.
“Stop. Right here,” he leaned forward, placing his hands on the dashboard.
The car came to a slow stop, the dirt beneath your tires crunched, and your breaks gave out the softest of cries.
“What is this place?” You asked, as you stepped out of the car, using your hip to shut the door.
“It was where I was going to suggest we got married,” you didn’t know, or hear how he got out of the car, you just felt him behind you, “Walk closer to the edge,” he had leaned forward, whispering in your ear.
It was always so stranger to feel chills run down your spine, while a warm breeze wafted over your body, hiding your face behind the tufts of hair that moved in the wind. Your feet carried you closer to the edge of the cliff. The walk way just cut off, and below you was a quiet and still creek, the sun cascading over the land like a blanket.
“Y/N,” he came up beside you, “I brought you up here, because it’s one of my favorite places in this world, a close second to your arms. You’re the only other person I’ve brought here.” His feet shuffled as he sat down, legs dangling over the edge from the knee down.
“You’re my person. I showed you the version of me that wasn’t always happy, I showed you the version of me that no one else gets to see. I showed you the bones in my closet, and instead of running, you grabbed the shovel. You’ve loved me through the days I couldn’t get out of bed, you loved me through the nights that I felt like I had hands around my neck - you filled my lungs with air, you helped me breathe. I will never be able to explain exactly what you’ve done for me, and I’m afraid I’ve run out of time. This was the only time I could say this.”
Wordlessly, you sat beside him. You didn’t know what else you could do, you didn’t know how you could make this better for him. You had so many words, and thoughts in your head, swimming around around your mouth. Your tongue pressing against the back of your teeth, as if they were some form of confinement.
“But I am not your person. I will be gone far sooner than you. You’ll be left without me… I can’t even imagine a world without you, so the thought of leaving you here without me, is torture. But, you will need to move on one day. You’ll fall in love again. Fuck, you might already be falling in love with someone else, and I’m okay with that. I want you to be happy, because you deserve it.” You could hear his voice crumbling. He sounded exactly the way you felt; defeated, broken, and accepting.
“I’m not in love with anyone but you, Jaebeom. There is no one else. There will never be anyone else.” How could he even think this? Even worse, how could he believe it so much so that he was saying it out loud.
“You don’t see it now. I understand why, but you know there is someone else. He’s always loved you, maybe just as much as me. He’s watched you fall apart, all that was left of you was jagged pieces, and he still held you. He took your broken pieces, and held them in his hand - even though they pushed into his skin. He put you together with bandages on his hands.”
Jackson. He was talking about Jackson. Of course, it’s was Jacks. How could you be so oblivious to it? Were you that obtuse to the world around you.
“He talks about you a lot. I can hear him. He tells me all the things about you that he thinks I miss, or things he think I should know. He sees you the same way I do, and that’s how I know he’ll always take care of you. He’ll protect you and keep you safe, even if you never accept him the way you accepted me.”
It was crazy to think, because you know that Jacks never expected anything from you. The thought of asking you to more than friends, never even crossed his mind, because you weren’t his. He’d rather be insufferably in love with you, and deal with it, than not have you in his life.
Hour and hours passed by, you two sat on the ledge, watching the sunset together. Having him sitting there was like having all your memories playing on a constant loop. His smiles reminded you of all the mornings you woke before him to wake him with kisses all over his face. The way the lowering sun caught the tip of his nose reminded you of all the times you would put whipped cream, or frosting on his nose. He could never stay out the kitchen when you baked. His laughter reminded you of the days in the park, dancing to the music of random street musicians. Occasionally, he’d walk over to them and sit beside them, singing along. He looked so in his element. His raw vocals and an acoustic guitar.
“It’s time to go,” he looked up at you, his eyes focusing on your face for some time. He must have been living in the memories of your smile.
“Are you sure?” You knew he wasn’t talking about leaving this place, he meant it was time for him to leave. He was ready to be set free.
“I am.. but can we stop one more place?”
“Of course, Jaebeommie.”
The familiar nickname made his heart squeeze. You called him that often, and now he was regretting all the times he never appreciated it. When he would ignore you when he was in the studio. All the stupid hours of working in songs, when you were in the living room reading, or playing with Nora. All the time he wasted.
The car ride towards the spot of the accident was silent. You tried to stomp your foot, throw a fit. You didn’t want to go there. You only had fleeting minutes with him, and he wanted to take you to the place that was ultimately his demise.
The street lights would move from his knees, over his face as you drove. You could see his chest rise and fall, like there was a heart inside of him. It made him seem so much more realistic. Having you forgetting that he wasn’t actually in the seat next to you.
The closer you got to your destination, the harder you gripped your steering wheel. You were glad that it wasn’t your heart hooked up to a monitor because it felt like it was about to leap out of your chest, and land in his lap.
Your headlight stopped at the tunnel. There was still a large scrap along the concrete from where your car had flipped and slid across the road.
“Why… why couldn’t you have just put on your seatbelt, Jae?” You whispered, head hanging between the arms.
“I asked myself that every time I’ve seen your cry,” he gulped, resting his head against his seat.
You tried to stop them, but your tears had more control over you, than you did of them, “But that wouldn’t have mattered if I would have been paying attention. You’d still be here, and I mean actually here.”
If you closed your eyes tight enough, you could still see the glass of your front windshield shatter, and you hear the sound of your car sliding. God, it was such a terrible sound. Just remembering it made you want you throw up.
“Baby. I need you to open your eyes and look at me,” he shifted in his seat to face you.
Hesitantly you did as he requested. You could taste the tears dripping off your lip and into your mouth. This was really it, and this was the place that took everything from you. There was nothing he could do or say to make you feel any better about it.
“This isn’t your fault,” he began, and you immediately grabbed your car door, pulling it open. You weren’t going to stick around to hear him try and justify what happened.
“You can’t run from me,” he was standing in front of you, before you could even blink your eyes.
“Not fair, you cant use your ghost powers to cut me off,” You sulked.
“I think I just did,” he did what he had set out to do, he stopped you in your tracks, “Look down.”
Without question you did so, and by your foot was a dirty, but still very shiny locket. You had lost your necklace that night, whether it was when the paramedics had to cut your clothes off, or in the middle of the crash. You knelt down, hooking your finger in the chain, letting it hang off down. He had gotten that for you on your second anniversary.
“This isn’t your fault. This was no ones fault. It was an accident, and that’s all. no one could have foreseen the events of that night. You need to stop blaming yourself, because it’ll take you to your grave if you don’t.”
“Is that a promise?”
“Y/N,” he hissed between clenched teeth, “Don’t fucking say that.”
“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean it, I’m just… I don’t know what I’m going to do without you.” The admittance that he was leaving soon, was almost too much to bare.
“You’ll never be without me, baby.” His hand moved across the necklace, letting it swing back and forth, “I’m always going to be right next to your heart.”
“Don’t… Don’t go, please don’t go.” You were thankful that you were already kneeling down, or falling to your knees like you just did would have hurt a lot more.
“I have to. I don’t need to be here anymore. Letting you go was my unfinished business.”
He was now on his knees, face only mere inches away from yours.
“But I’ll never be able to let you go… What about me? Don’t I get a say in this?”
“I love you so much, Y/N. You will always be the love of my life,” you could already feel the warmth that he carried with him, started to slip away.
No, no, no. Here it was, the end of it all. The end of all the ‘I love you’s.’ There would be no more early morning drives to get coffee, there would be no more moon lit dances on your roof, there would be no more him, there would be no more you.
He leaned in, pressing his lips to your forehead. You only knew he did that, because you felt the softest of tingles. He lingered there for a moment, reliving his life in seconds that felt like hours.
Finally he was gone. You couldn’t feel him anymore. All that was left was the necklace in your hand, and the air taken out of your lungs. Your body trembled, as if it was riding itself of the dead weight. A flame flashed over your skin, as if it burned off any remaining pieces of him, turning all his touches to dust.
Your cell phone continued to buzz in your cup holder, Jackson’s name popping up over and over. Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. A scream of pure pain filled the night time air. Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. Begs and pleads to the man you cursed to angrily. Buzz. Bu— Silence.
Two Years Later
You rolled away from Jackson’s grasp to curl into your pillow, eyes heavy with sleep. You loved cuddling with Jacks, but man, that boy could really start to feel like a furnace. Every night you did this, roll away, and yet still manage to wake up with your body tangled with his. He was a magnet.
Jackson must have believed you were asleep, because most nights when you left his side, you were asleep. Not this time though, you were on the brink of sleep and being wide awake.
“Hyung?” Jackson voice was hushed. You could hear the pillow crinkle under his head as he turned to glance over his shoulder, making sure you were still ‘asleep.’
“It’s been a while since I’ve talked to you… and I’m sorry for that. Life has just been so hectic. I just wanted to say I miss you, and I know that y/n misses you too. She still says your name in her sleep, not as much anymore, but on bad days, she’ll call out for you. There’s not much I can do except to hold her.”
You had to use every fiber in your being not to turn around and wrap yourself around Jackson. You wanted to tell him that just because you still called out for Jae some times, didn’t mean that you didn’t love him. It broke your heart thinking that you still said Jae’s names in front of him.
“I don’t mind it though. I know she still loves you, and I would never ever think of taking that away from her. You were everything to her, you still are. I know she loves me too, she shows it all the time, but I’m afraid that I’m not enough for her sometimes. You know? She’s just so incredible. She is kind to everyone on the street, the smiles at little kids, and my parents love her. She’s extraordinary, and I feel way out of her league… but she still loves me. How lucky are we to be loved by someone like that?”
Lucky? You were the lucky one. Most people don’t even have one great love in their life, but you’ve had two - Jaebeom and now Jackson. You’ve been loved unconditionally, and without fear by two men, who could have the world, but decided to make you their world.
“I know you still love her too, and I hope that I can let that live through me, so she never forgets that we love her. I won’t let you down, Jae. I promise.”
A promise he did keep
