Happy #Selection Sunday, folks! This week’s selection is none other than La Cenerentola, music by Gioachino Rossini and libretto by Jacopo Ferretti. Full discloser, this is probably my favorite opera of all time as of right now--it’s a refreshing take on the story of Cinderella and is one of the few operas where no one dies at the end. One of my favorite differences on this take of Cinderella from others is that the role of the fairy godmother is replaced by a Alidoro, a philosopher and former tutor to the prince--which I think can make for an interesting gender-fluid character design.
Keep reading for a synopsis and links to a full performance!
Act 1 Poor Cenerentola is treated like a slave by her stepfather Don Magnifico and step-sisters, Clorinda and Thisbe. Together, they live in a run down castle that Magnifico can’t afford to repair. He’s spent all of his money, as well as Cenerentola’s on himself and his spoilt daughters.
Suddenly, Alidoro, the prince’s teacher and adviser, turns up at the castle, but he’s disguised as a beggar. The sisters are disgusted by the sight of him and try to send him away, but Cenerentola takes pity, and gives him food and coffee. Alidoro is very impressed by her kindness.
Prince Ramiro arrives. He’s been ordered by his father, the king, to find a bride or else forfeit his rights to the throne. Desperate to be loved for whom he is, and not just because he’s a prince, Ramiro has disguised himself as his own servant, Dandini. When he and Cenerentola set eyes on each other, it’s love at first sight. But now, the prince’s servant Dandini turns up, but disguised as the Prince! He invites Magnifico and the step sisters to the ball. ‘If only the prince would marry one of my daughters’, thinks Magnifico, ‘I’ll be rich again, and finally be shown the respect I deserve!’ After they’ve left, Alidoro removes his beggar’s disguise and assures Cenerentola that she too will go the ball.
When she arrives at the palace looking totally gorgeous, everyone is amazed by the beauty of this unknown guest. But Magnifico and the two sisters sense something familiar about her. They fear that trouble lies in store for them...
Act 2 In the meantime, Dandini, the prince’s servant disguised as the Prince, has fallen in love with Cenerentola himself! She tells him ‘Thanks, but no thanks –you see I’m in love with your servant.’ The prince, disguised as Dandini overhears this, and comes running in. ‘Not so fast!’ Cenerentola says. ‘I’ll give you one of a pair of matching bracelets. I’ll wear the other. If you really love me, you’ll come and find me – you’ll know you’ve found me when you see that the bracelets match’. And she leaves.
Back at the fireplace, and dressed in rags once again, Cenerentola is all alone. Magnifico and his daughters return from the ball- angry at the mysterious guest that could have wrecked their chances with the prince. Suddenly a storm rages outside, and a carriage breaks down outside the castle. It’s Prince Ramiro’s carriage. He and Cenerentola are overcome with joy as they recognise each other.
But the continuing arrogance of Magnifico and the sisters starts to make Ramiro’s blood boil. Cenerentola begs him to show mercy, and she and the prince leave together.
Now that she’s a princess, Cenerentola announces in her new- found happiness that Don Magnifico and her two step sisters must be forgiven and welcomed as friends. Amazed by her compassion, all agree that no one deserves to be princess more than Cenerentola, who vows that her days of slavery are finally over!

La Cenerentola Rossini
Rossini’s music has an irrepressible quality, bubbling up effortlessly throughout this retelling of the story of Cinderella. The invention is unstoppable, from Cenerentola’s plaintive song about a king who loves a poor girl to the lavish coloratura of her final aria when goodness triumphs and all ends, for some at any rate, happily ever after. Angelina (aka La Cenerentola) is mistreated by her two sisters, Clorinda and Tisbe - as their father, Don Magnifico, looks on in approbation. Alidoro, Prince Ramiro’s advisor, arrives at the house, disguised as a beggar. Rossini: La Cenerentola. Teresa Berganza (Cenerentola), Luigi Alva (Ramiro), Renato Capecchi (Dandini), Paolo Montarsolo (Don Magnifico) London Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Opera Chorus, Claudio Abbado. Rossini's Cinderella is a fairy-tale without a fairy, but no less bewitching for that. In fact the replacement of the winged godmother with the. La Cenerentola Libretto English Translation. La Cenerentola (Cinderella), Rossini’s nineteenth opera, was composed in a remarkable twenty-four days before premiering in Rome on January 25, 1817. The original story of “Cinderella” had been written by Charles Perrault, a Frenchman who lived in the seventeenth century.

, but it enjoyed growing success, and afterseveral performances it turned into a triumph. The Teatro Valle, a rivaltheatre in Rome, offered a contract to Rossini for an opera buffa to bestaged the following season: Rossini accepted, then returned to Napleswhere he had his primary engagement with the Teatro San Carlo.
His fulltime contract with Naples allowed Rossini to work for other cities, but he had to arrange these performances on very short time schedules. In December 1816 he went to Rome to write and prepare the new opera. The theatre proposed a libretto by Rossi, on the subject ofFrancesca di Foix (a subject later set to music byDonizetti in 1831), but thecensor vetoed it, a major setback because of the extremely short timeavailable. The theatre manager asked the librettist Jacopo Ferrettito help. Ferretti later wrote a detailed report of the creation of thisnew work (see the complete Italian text):
Two days before Christmas Day of the year 1816 I was invited by thetheatre manager Cartoni and Maestro Rossini for a meeting with theVatican censor. (..) (The existing libretto) could not be modified ina suitable way, so they begged me to find another subject and write anew libretto on the spot. I said «they begged», and so it was, because there were bad feelings between me and Rossini, due to a littlewrong he had previously done me.
(Rossini had refused a libretto by Ferretti the year before, preferring Cesare Sterbini's version of the Barbiere.)Ferretti, however, did not refuse this new opportunity to have a librettoset to music by Rossini: they all went to Cartoni's house 'for tea'and Ferretti began to suggest many subjects.
I proposed some twenty or thirty subjects. But one was too dramatic forthe carnival season, another too tricky, another required an expensivestaging or did not suit the singers (..). Sick of proposals and nearlyprostrate with weariness, I yawned: 'Cinderella'. Rossini, in order toconcentrate, was lying on his bed. He abruptly stood up likeAlighieri's Farinata and said: «Would you have the heart for writingme a 'Cinderella'?» - I replied «And you for setting it to music?», and he asked «when would the draft be ready ?»;and I: «despite my sleepiness, tomorrow morning!»; and Rossini:«good night!»: he wrapped himself in the sheets and fell asleep(..)
Ferretti discussed the financial aspects with a relieved Cartoni, thenwent home and wrote his first draft. Rossini was satisfied with it,but insisted on stripping all magical elements from the plot. Perrault'sfairy tale was the primary source, but it is easy to recognizethe influence of the then-famous Neapolitan opera buffa La Cecchina, ossia La buona figliola, by Piccinni on Goldoni's libretto.Piccinni's work is often cited as a milestone in the development ofopera buffa, and it was a source of inspiration for many other works:the latest of them (before Cenerentola) was Stefano Pavesi'sAgatina, o La virtù premiata (Milan, 1814), on a librettoby Francesco Fiorini. Pavesi's work must have been well-known to Rossini, for it was staged at the Teatro alla Scala in the same season as hisTurco in Italia and Sigismondo. In addition, Nicholas Isouard's opera Cendrillon, staged in Parisin 1810, on a libretto by Charles-Guillaume Étienne, must have beenknown to both Rossini and Ferretti, having been a major success inFrench theaters.
La Cenerentola did suffer some trouble when staged in Frenchtheaters. The substantial differences from Perrault's fairy tale, as wellas the popularity of Isouard's competing version of the same subject, led the French critics to be negatively disposed . Of course thefavourite argument of its opponents was the 'betrayal' of Perrault'sideas. An article in a Paris' paper (Journal des débats,10 June 1822), criticizes the libretto for the substitution of a braceletfor Cinderella's shoe, jesting that the substitution might have beenmade for a prima donna with a beautiful arm and ugly feet.Gertrude Righetti Giorgi, for whom the opera had been written, was notamused, and displayed her stage temper in an open letter to the press:
'You miserable people who soil paper to earn undeserved attention fromyour readers! On Roman stages, it is not permitted to display the same situations that are seen in France. It seemed that decency might be offendedby displaying a slipper, and since it was a musical comedy it was easyto substitute a bracelet. But Sig. Parisian Journalist should not thinkthat I say this to defend my feet: he does not know me, and if he didhe might say that I have more to gain by adopting the original slipperthan by clinging to the bracelet.'(Italian Text)

Residenza Q in Abruzzo
22 Nov 2020
Residenza Q
Design: Architect Valeria Aretusi
Location: Abruzzo, Italy
In Abruzzo, halfway between sea and olive trees, a ruin had been transformed by architect Valeria Aretusi into a villa with a clean and Nordic design, flooded with light and blue, fragrant of wood and salt.
“To me, Residenza Q is the scent of wood, the emotion of blue and the balance of form, all overlooking the sea”.
“An organic dialogue between inside and outside, the villa and the surrounding landscape, the olive trees, the hill, the Adriatic Sea”.
“In this project I combined the geometric and neat design of Northern Europe, which I am fascinated by, with a touch of Morocco, coming to life in a small and secluded conservatory as an homage to the Majorelle Garden, which the owners would have loved to bring back from their travels”. Arch. Valeria Aretusi
Residenza Q is a villa surrounded by olive trees on the hills of Abruzzo, resulting from the demolition and enlargement of a ruin located on top of a hill overlooking the sea, on the slopes of the village of Montepagano.
Q is the letter chosen by the architect Valeria Aretusi for the owners: the master pastry chefs of the Ferretti family. The Q represents a closed nucleus, symbol of the house, with a descending curve which simulates the incline that leads to the coast, since the house was built on a soft hill facing the Adriatic Sea.
A project with minimal architecture, Scandinavian style and a solid eco-sustainable foundation, which has an area of 120 square meters for each of the two floors. The ground floor of the module on the southern side consists of a living room with fireplace, kitchen, study room, utility room and bathroom, while the attic houses two bedrooms with private bathrooms and a solarium. The module on the northern side, instead, is a large open space with attic, bedroom, bathroom and solarium.
Residenza Q has a gabled roof which – shifting on the main ridge axis – allows the two units a staggered placement. This choice gives privacy to each of the modules, thus maintaining the identity of a single dwelling surrounded by greenery.
The clean and geometric design, reminiscent of Danish and Norwegian homes, is surprising for the warmth of its interiors, thanks to the use of wood, the exposed beams in the sleeping area and the window/floor surface ratio. The front door frames the sea, the first element in perspective that can be perceived as soon as you enter. The windows are designed to have specific points of view towards the outside and the surrounding nature, without visually interfering with pedestrians, cars and the property nearby. To enhance privacy and give color to the light of the interiors, the architect created a conservatory with coarse-grained blue plaster, inspired by the Majorelle garden in Marrakech. The courtyard of the conservatory – rich in succulent plants – is overlooked by large rough-cut wooden beams, designed to filter daylight without obscuring it. Here the inspiration comes from Luis Barragàn: from the blue courtyard the light flows through the interiors acquiring a new dimension, creating a state of mind.
The rhythm of the façades is marked by the verticality of the cladding staves, and interspersed with the free positioning of windows and French windows. On the east façade, instead, there is a return to geometry, thanks to a couple of specular sliding windows, of about 8 meters each, facing the sea.
The structure has a linear shape with two pitches that converge with the perimeter walls, without overhangs, thus respecting the minimal style of the project. The roof is covered with matte grey sheet metal with a retractable rainwater collector. The same invisible system was also used for the terraces.
The eco-sustainable approach of the building is highlighted by the use of the biological system with aerated percolation: a purification system that allows to transform and recover water for the irrigation of the garden and vegetable garden. Moreover, the residence is realised with ecological materials and technologies – X-Lam wood structure, covered in Déco – and both internally and externally uses shades of a grey palette. The external covering is vertically assembled to match the linearity of the project, while the grey tones on the wood grain are used to enhance the texture of the construction. The variation of the sunlight affects the perception of the color on the surfaces, according to a chromatic range that goes from dark tones to dove grey and light grey.
The material used for the exterior is a natural composite wood – WPC (wood polymer composite) – assembled as a ventilated wall: an effective coating to solve the problems related to the protection of buildings from humidity and atmospheric agents, while improving the thermal and acoustic insulation.
If the exterior has a compact and monolithic appearance, the materials chosen for the interiors give warmth to the setting: natural larch wood and umber oak wood, glazed brass details, mud flat lacquered carpentry, terrazzo effect quartz tops and herringbone oak parquet.
The kitchen, which naturally develops from the living room, is the space that best emphasises the harmony between the house and the nature of the surrounding environment: the conservatory is, in fact, fully integrated structurally and visually in this room.
For the back wall of the kitchen, moreover, a smoked reflective background in a bronze tone has been chosen to evoke the gleaming sun on the sea, while the blue Majorelle of the winter garden, in Moroccan style, creates a dialogue with the view of the Adriatic Sea.
The staircase, made of anthracite-colored bent iron sheets, is light and veiled by the wall of cross perforated sheet. The velvets in primary colors which embellish the interior were also used for the restoration of Chiavari chairs in wood and brass.
The interiors of the house also boast prestigious names: Ernestomeda’s kitchen, specially designed for this villa, is Riflessi Mare on a Bavuso design model, the wallpapers are by Cole & Son and Gucci, while the fabrics are by Morris & Co. and Gastón y Daniela.

She worked for several years with the Claudio Nardi Architects studio in Florence, dealing mainly with retail, residences and large-scale commissions. She currently focuses her work on private projects related to eco-sustainable wooden houses and renovations of apartments and houses in Nordic style, with a particular attention to the past and memory through the recovery of abandoned urban and architectural spaces.

Italian Chamber of Fashion Confirms Carlo Capasa as President – WWD
https://ift.tt/2Vgye5K
The board of the Italian Chamber of Fashion on Wednesday confirmed Carlo Capasa as president of the association until 2022.
Capasa joined the Milan-based association in its role in April 2015. He succeeded Mario Boselli, who headed the fashion organization for 15 years and is now honorary president, along with Beppe Modenese.
Capasa will lead the organization through the complex phase of the industry’s relaunch after the coronavirus pandemic has forced brands to reconsider their overall strategies.
“Our association has never been more united, today all the most important brands are our members,” he said, after thanking associates for their contribution in the “Italia we are with you” charity initiative that raised 3 million euros to donate to the country’s Civil Protection Authority.
“Our goal in the next years is to enhance and affirm even more the Italian fashion industry in the world. We count on the collaboration and support of our partners and prestigious board to carry on and represent the values of fashion as well as implement the association’s strategic pillars.”
Since his appointment, Capasa has been developing a strategy focused on several axises, including sustainability, inclusion and diversity, digitization and support to young designers. Last year, the association issued a manifesto to guide companies in implementing inclusive practices. He has also forged tight relationships with international institutions and promoted Italian fashion through compelling storytelling.
In particular, during his tenure, Capasa has hosted roundtables and collaborated with specialized associations aimed at defining practical guidelines to promote sustainability across the whole fashion chain, along with launching the Green Carpet Fashion Awards Italia project in collaboration with Livia Firth, founder and creative director of Eco-Age. Last year, the organization additionally joined the Kering-led Fashion Pact initiative with the role of coordinating Italian brands.
On Wednesday, the board also elected — or in most cases reelected — the presidency committee with a mandate until 2022. In addition to Capasa, the board comprises executives and designers from the country’s main fashion groups: Patrizio Bertelli, Marco Bizzarri, Serge Brunschwig, Jacopo Etro, Giovanna Gentile Ferragamo, Massimo Ferretti, Luigi Maramotti, Angela Missoni, Renzo Rosso, Remo Ruffini, Carla Sozzani, Jacopo Venturini and Gildo Zegna. Dolce & Gabbana’s chief executive officer Alfonso Dolce also joined the board following the brand’s return to the association after two decades.

-Besetzung- Musikalische Leitung: Daniel Inbal Inszenierung: Béatrice Lachaussée Bühne, Kostüme: Nele Ellegiers Choreinstudierung: Sierd Quarré Dramaturgie: Christoph Lang Don Ramiro: Miloš Bulajić Dandini: Jan Friedrich Eggers Don Magnifico: Genadijus Bergorulko Clorinda: Erika Simons Tisbe: Gabriella Guilfoil Angelina (La Cenerentola): Olga Privalova Alidoro: José Gallisa Opernchor des Theaters Osnabrück Osnabrücker Symphonieorchester Statisterie des Theaters Osnabrück ℗ Filmproduktion Siegersbusch, Wuppertal, Hochgeladen von: Theater Osnabrueck, https://ift.tt/2bg6CEt
