Weekend links, May 12, 2024
My posts
Your head is hurting and your wifi is out because the biggest solar flare/geomagnetic storm in 20 years hit this weekend. I didn’t actually get to see the aurora borealis, but apparently it really did come down as far as Alabama.
I admit that this was an extremely glib reply. But like, Athena specifically doesn’t like people claiming they’re better than her, so you can imagine the carnage when you throw in two more goddesses as well.
(I feel like that post happened a month ago. This week has felt so ungodly long.)
Reblogs of interest
Hot Vintage Lady Bracket: Round 6. Eight polls. Poll Mod immediately chose violence and put Marilyn Monroe against Hedy Lamarr. Since Ava Gardner is out (actual shockers: Greta Garbo and Rita Hayworth are also gone), I was going to say “I’m just Chaos Elmo Flames Dot Gif about it all” but now I’m just scared.
(Why would you ask us, a hot vintage poll blog, this)
Dracula Daily is in full swing again, and you can eat along!
The Met Gala was honestly decent this year! I reblogged only (some of) the ones I liked, including some of the construction details and a lot of Zendaya, although my favorite might have been Rebecca Ferguson with the crows.
A while back and not what he wore to the Gala, but: Lil Nas X looking beautiful in a rose garden.
Hozier Watch 2024: I really thought there wasn’t going to be anything else and then he was like, “Oh I should probably put out a video for my accidental international #1.” I am entirely disgruntled that he was here last weekend and I couldn’t go.
From the top of the week, Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar: An explainer. Also, Kendrick recs.
MrBeast is living in a joyless hell of his own making, and I at least understand now why he has always freaked me out.
So anyway noted plagiarist James Somerton is alive and well on Twitter, where he’s... well, he sure is there. The words “hole posting” are involved. Another explainer for you.
Lynda Carter proves she’s on Tumblr
We put our faith in BLAST HARDCHEESE
Peace and love on planet Earth and also in the Uber
“thinking about middle aged gay love is like. we have a future and we have time”
While there are merits to this concern, “Writers should all clown on Americans by making up places in THEIR country” doesn’t really sting when we’re all like “Yeah we love doing that!!!” I personally give you all permission to make up as many wackadoodle state names as you want. You can have West Mainolina for free.
Meanwhile in Alabama: Bad, bad Leroy Brown, the baddest fish in the whole damn town
RIP Walnut the crane: “The Bride”
Dinosaurs are terrible lizards
Teaching consent is a many-faceted thing
Become ungovernable: grill edition
Video
Galadriel’s opening Fellowship of the Ring monologue, but it’s the Deep South (U.S.). “Across the county line in Mordor, the Dark Lord Sauron made his self another ring outta everything mean the devil put in him.” Absolutely pitch perfect.
Also pitch perfect: Wellness influencers with terrible advice
“Mooom, the chocolate alchemist has an accomplice now!”
I will always reblog cheetah sounds
The Collage Atlas: a hand-drawn game on Steam
The sacred texts
South Canada. South South Canada. Canada A Bit to the Left
I think I’ve listed this compilation of parody lyrics (”I’m sorry Ms. Jackson/I am four eels”) before, but there’s more now
“Roses are red, that much is true, but violets are purple, not fucking blue”
Personal tags of the week
Scrungly and, as a related topic, Belphegor the Devon rex kitten.

Last Song: Blue in The Dark - Bearings (They're my favorite band right now, mmk lol)
Currently Watching: Nothing really, I'm a toddler mom about to start grad school so I don't have much time for shows and stuff haha
Currently Reading: Again, nothing yet BUT I have about 5 books so far for grad school I'll be needing to read at some point, starting with African History: A Very Short Introduction if you're interested!
Current Obsession: My obsessions are usually very like "one thing at a time" and it usually lasts for 6 or so months at a time now that I'm older and have less time for fandom things LOL but I'm getting better at "just because I'm not super into this thing right now, doesn't mean it doesn't hold a place in my heart"🥹. Anyway, I'm feel like I'll be a little judged for what I'm fixated with right now but it's Michael Jackson lol. It comes and goes but I loved him most of my life now so ya ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. But, I'm also into collecting unique/edgy earrings and collecting vintage clothing from the 80s/90s right now, too haha.
Tagging with zero pressure!!! @tashabanes @books-and-glitter @scottysketches @d64d-n0t-sl66p1ng @falling-down-the-scroll-hole
#I feel like i'm not a very interesting person sometimes LOL sorry#but I think I'm mostly alright lol#I tried tagging new people that I see interact with my stuff from time to time#hello there all!#no pressure as always#i just really like tag games lol#text post#tag game#get to know me#grad school#bearings#music#michael jackson#80s

The Prologue
The silence between us masterlist
Pairing: Sam Kiszka x deaf female OC
Warnings: Cursing, Asshole Aam, References to sex. let me know if i miss anything!!!
Word count: 1,193
before you start here are a few things you need to know. when the characters are speaking in bold italics that means they are using sign language.
Summers POV:
Summer you are NOT bringing that
Why not? it’s cute! vintage!
It has a hole in the armpit!
Juniper grabs the worn out pink 2000’s style crop top with a low cut neckline that in which my opinion made my tits look fucking amazing. i think she’s just jealous. she turns around and puts her hands on her hips and looks me once over.
me and Juniper could not be more different. we are fraternal twins, but looking at us you wouldn’t even think we were related. she has dark brunette hair which then got all shaved off into a buzz cut which resulted in my mom fainting and my dad having to grab our beloved family cat Triscut from her inevitably falling body. she dresses herself in anything dark green, black or brown. i’m the exact opposite, i have bright blonde hair that has pink highlights all over (don’t work my mom only swayed slightly when she saw. no Triscuts were harmed) i like to dress in anything bright and colorful or beachy and i had just recently gotten a nose ring, the one thing Juniper refuses to do because “what if i get infected by the needle and my body starts slowly deteriorating until i’m only but a afternoon snack for Triscut.
god i love her.
but the biggest difference of all probably is that she’s hearing and i’m..well not.
when i was about four months old i was getting these rashes everywhere, and no matter how many times my parents brought me into the pediatrician it was always the same story. “oh it’s eczema” or “she must be allergic to something”. two months later when they had found out it was Rubella it was too late, i had stopped responding whenever my name was called or reacting to loud noises and that’s when my family was told that the Rubella had caused me to loose my hearing. My mom immediately looked into hearing aids once i turned one and got everyone in the family, including my older brother Austin into sign language classes. Juniper took it upon herself, once she was old enough to become my personal translator and Austin, being two years older than me and Juniper took it upon himself to be the man of the house after my dad passed away when me and Juniper were five.
when me and Juniper turned 19, she left to go to film school in Nashville and i followed her there to study occupational therapy and disability studies. we bought apartments right next to each-other and Austin came over and helped install lights all over my house that were connected to the microwave, oven, doorbell, and fire alarm.
that leaves us here, me and Juniper are twenty one and Austin is twenty three and we’re planning our annual trip to seaside florida along with my best friend Amelia and my brothers friend Jackson. oh and Triscut of course.
i sigh and take my hearing aids out, which i’ve seemed to be doing a lot more lately, sometimes silence is better, and put them in their little case before zipping up my suitcase. Austin knocks on the door to my apartment and Juniper runs to let him as i drag all of my luggage out to the living room area.
You almost ready to go? Austin signs while talking at the same time.
Almost. i respond once my hands are free.
Well hurry up!! he responds as he drags the suitcases down to his car and i let out a breathy laugh and shake my head.
florida 2022 here we come.
Sam’s POV:
BEEP BEEP BEEP
i groan and pat on my bedside table blindly before hitting the snooze button. i wipe the sleep from my eyes when i try to sit up but feel an arm and a leg wrapped around me. what the fuck-
oh.
right.
i had gone to the club last night with a few friends and spotted her..what was her name..chelsea..chandler..cherry..i don’t know but she was hot and was giving me “fuck me” eyes all night. i went over to her and worked my charm and one thing led to another and i took her home, which is a decision i’m very much regretting because Josh will be here along with Jake and Danny, no doubt banging on my door telling me to get my ass up so we can get on the road to Florida. She wasn’t very good in bed either, she was noisy and moved too much. Definitely adding to the “do not call again” list:
i push unknown girl off my body which leads her to let out a little whine and wake up.
“hey baby” she rasps out and tries to grab my hand but i quickly turn that down and stand up, pulling on my boxers.
“you need to go”
“excuse me”
“you heard me, get your shit and go.”
she stares at me like i had just put a new born lamb inside a deep fryer and presses her lips together before gathering all of her clothes and putting them on. this is how it always is when i bring girls home, they get all clingy in the morning and i have to force them right out the door, i like how i can have one night of fun and not have to deal with them after that. i guess i was too wrapped up in my train of thought that i didn’t even hear her leave but i know she did because my room no longer smells like cheap perfume. i grab black shorts and a red t-shirt and quickly change before making sure i have everything for our trip.
Josh had insisted we travel to florida so we can people watch and get inspiration for our next album, but honestly i think he just wanted to get away from the city for a while, and i can’t blame him. right as i’m finishing zipping my suitcase there’s a knock on the door and before i can even open it josh walks in.
“You could’ve at least waited for me to open the door. and you’re late”
josh crosses his arms and narrows his eyes at me
“i wouldn’t have been late if i didn’t have to calm down what i could have only assumed was your one night stand who was crying and absolutely hysterical outside of your door, you didn’t even let the poor girl put her shoes on before you shoved her out the door. I also had to call her a Uber so i expect 20.50 in my bank account by the end of the day”
i scoff and run my fingers through my air and grab my backpack and sling it over my shoulder.
“it’s not my fault girls always expect more.”
“you’re an asshole Samuel Francis Kiszka.”
“so i’ve heard. let’s go”
i grab all of my things and bring them out to the car where Jake and Danny were waiting. little did i know that this one trip was about to change my life forever.
Florida 2022 here we come.

Percy Jackson Characters + Styles of Dress
Percy- Alternative + Skater He looks like a skater boy and dresses like one, too. He wears a lot of Thrasher shirts, checkered Vans, chains, beanies, ripped jeans, long socks, light studs, baggy shirts, jeans that are usually black or dark blue, and jackets that are usually leather or denim. His main colors are black and blue accented with gray and white. He accessories perfectly and lightly and always has that one thing that tips his outfit off a bit but otherwise he dresses pretty well and only dresses for himself (and almost never combs his hair). He has a lot of pins and sewed stickers on his jackets and usually has his skateboard with a bunch of spray-painted designs on the back with him. He sometimes wears ripped tank tops and/or jeans and flannel shirts and his favorite article of clothing is a black beanie Grover bought him.
Annabeth- Nerdy Academia + Comfy Half the time she wears skinny jeans, cardigans, scarves, long-sleeved shirts, button-up shirts, baggy pants, and the occasional skirt and the other half of the time she wears oversized hoodies, sweatpants, sweaters, and baggy shirts. She owns a hundred different belts, mostly wears short boots, and likes to accessorize with small gold jewelry and always has some sort of brown purse with her to hold her books and blueprints. She usually looks like the human personification of the coffee shop aesthetic and her main colors are brown, white, and cream with dark yellow and black accents. Her favorite article of clothing is a dark orange dress shirt that goes with anything.
Jason- Prep + Plain He wears the epitome of the Dad™ outfits- polo shirts, jeans, t-shirts, belts, sneakers, khakis, knee-shorts, sandals, and striped or button-up shirts. He sometimes wears suspenders and looks super nerdy in them but otherwise has a very plain and simple style. He likes to look presentable but doesn’t care that much about fashion. He’ll wear the occasional denim jacket, hoodie, and combat boots and the only accessory he has ever worn was a watch until Reyna bought him a gold chain necklace he always wears but tucks into all his shirts. His main colors are white, purple, and blue with light gray accents. His favorite article of clothing is a white polo shirt from his favorite shop at New Rome.
Piper- Casual + Simple She wears basic, everyday clothes most people own like sweaters, denim and snowboarding jackets, sneakers, hiking boots, t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, and skinny jeans (ripped and not). She likes to keep it plain and simple- just like Jason- and rarely accessories, usually just going for whatever’s comfiest. She doesn’t really care about fashion but will occasionally wear a cardigan, small accessory like a bracelet or necklace, or hoodie that most likely belongs to Jason. Her main colors are green and blue with orange and white accents. Her favorite article of clothing is the white snowboarding jacket her mom returned to her after claiming her at Camp Half-Blood.
Frank- Cozy + Athletic He loves comfy, warm clothes. His wardrobe mostly consists of large hoodies, sweats, cuffed jeans, baggy t-shirts, zip-up sweaters, and sneakers but also often wears athletic clothes like Nike tank tops, workout shorts, gym shoes, and athletic tops. Other than that he wears the typical Camp Jupiter outfit and his main colors are blue, purple, and white with accents of red and brown. He also likes wearing clothes with Canadian-flag prints on them. His favorite article of clothing is a large, dark gray Adidas hoodie that mysteriously goes missing every few days (ahemHazelahem).
Hazel- Old-Fashioned + Cottagecore Her style is the cutest. Sometimes she wears vintage clothing from the early 1900′s as that’s what she’s most used to, so she sometimes wears cute vintage dresses, gloves, and pearl jewelry, but she mostly wears flowy dresses, riding boots, skirts, comfy shirts, jeans, baggy sweaters, and overalls and overall shorts and usually accessories with her own jewelry, cute pins, and flowers, especially flower crowns (courtesy of her step-mother Proserpina). She loves floral-print, often steals hoodies and t-shirts five times too big for her from Frank, likes wearing sparkly makeup (usually in gold), and her main colors are white, cream, and light brown with pink and light green accents. Her favorite article of clothing is a pearl necklace similar to one her mother used to wear.
Leo- Work + Eccentric He has two very different styles. He usually wears clothes that are best suited for his work like plain tops, cargo pants to carry all his tools, army jackets, tool belts, khakis, jeans, and Timberland boots, but whenever he’s out in the mortal world or not working, his style completely changes. He wears bright, flashy colors that don’t go together, random prints (especially floral and cheetah-print), and accessories with different jewelry, mostly bracelets. He owns a lot of silly and graphic tees and has a bunch of fandom merch. His colors for his work clothes are brown, white, and green and his colors for his everyday clothes are every color imaginable. His favorite article of clothing is a yellow t-shirt with a Pikachu face on it, which he bought cause he always used to watch Pokémon with his mom.
Reyna- Androgynous/Butch/Tomboyish + Low-Key Punk Her style screams badass. She wears a bunch of unisex and tomboy clothes like button-up jean shirts, baggy and button-up shirts in general, flannel shirts, jeans, sneakers, beanies, hoodies, and sometimes polo shirts and suspenders but also wears punk-ish clothes like denim or leather jackets, studs, fingerless leather gloves, ripped jeans, combat boots, and punk accessories (courtesy of Thalia), and she looks awesome in a suit. Sometimes she wears binds and mostly accessories with pins and earrings but is comfortable with any style of clothing and it honestly ranges day-to-day, and sometimes when she’s feeling nostalgic she’ll do her hair and makeup really well like she used to at Circe’s Island. She cares about her appearance and every outfit is always on-point and perfect, even if she didn’t try that hard and some colors don’t match with the others. Her main colors are purple, brown, and gold with white, red, and black accents. Her favorite article of clothing is a button-up jean shirt she bought while out with Nico.
Nico- Emo/Grunge + Girly His style is unique, but not as eccentric as Leo’s. A lot of the time he wears the basic black skull t-shirt, black leather or aviator jacket, black jeans, chains, combat boots, and light accessories with a few studs, but he mixes it up quite often. He also frequently wears grunge-like clothes like faded clothes, floral-print, plaid shirts, baggy sweaters, cardigans, beanies, distressed jeans, denim jackets, and parkas, but- with the help from his Big Sister™ Reyna and feminine queen Drew Tanaka- he experiments with transvestism and loves wearing crop-tops, skirts, flowy dresses, cute tops, and light makeup, usually eyeliner and blush. His colors range from main black with gray and white accents to main brown, blue, and black with green and silver accents to main pink and black with white and light brown accents. He also loves stealing clothes from Reyna cause they’re so big and comfy. He has two favorite articles of clothing- the silver skull ring from Bianca and a black denim jacket with a white skull stitch on the right lapel from Reyna.
Thalia- Punk + Goth She wears mostly punk clothes- ripped-up jackets, studs, chains, band pins, ripped jeans, leather jackets, chain jewelry, and graphic or band tees- but sometimes will go full goth when she feels like it and will wear all-black outfits, black combat boots with a bunch of belts on them, heavy jewelry, studs, and baggy or lacy clothes. She’ll usually just wear black eyeliner but will go all-out with awesome black eyeshadow, black lipstick, and small black designs near her eyelids (courtesy of makeup-professional Reyna). She also wears gold and silver accessories and owns a bunch of lightning-bolt clothes (courtesy of her frenemy Percy). She only wears Hunter of Artemis-style clothes like silvery parkas, gray camo pants, and gray hunting boots when out hunting with the other Hunters but always wears her silver lieutenant circlet. Her main colors are black with white, dark blue, silver, and sometimes gold accents. Her favorite article of clothing is the black leather jacket Luke gave to her before she got turned into a tree.
Rachel- Artsy + Cute She wears clothes that are the epitome of the Artsy Friend™. She usually wears oversized and baggy shirts, jeans with poked holes in them, casual shoes (mostly colorful Converse), overalls and overall shorts, bright-colored and/or striped tees and sweaters, mom jeans, beanies, and jumpers. She carries a palette and a few paintbrushes around with her everywhere in a kanken and always has doodles and paint splatters on her clothes, hands, and arms and sometimes chalk beneath her usually-painted fingernails. Sometimes she practices her art in makeup-form and does amazing detailed eyeshadow or scarily realistic drawings on her arms and legs. She also loves wearing bandanas, sandals, hair pins, scrunchies, and gold accessories. She wears pretty much every color but mostly red, orange, and yellow with green, blue, and purple accents and likes wearing rainbow clothes as well. Her favorite article of clothing is a bright yellow jumper Percy bought her for her birthday.

Hi There! Welcome in!
I’m Avery, and ever since I graduated college in the middle of the pandemic there’s been a little hole inside me because I no longer have a captive audience of 20-30 people who have to hear my thoughts, opinions, and theories about whatever we’d read or watched that day.
Then some of my friends started posting doctor who essays and sewing tutorials on tumblr (in 2021?? Which is still wild to me because I haven’t been on here since superwholock was like, the only thing on here) and I realized
I could do that
But not with Doctor Who. Ew. No, with all the weird books I read and shit.
I try to read a lot, but probably average 20-25 books a year. I love vintage fashion (not vintage values!) and might rant about corsets sometime. I also cosplay with said sewing tutorials friend and got really into cosplay photography through that. I probably won’t post it here but who knows. I’ll probably mostly post about the books I’ve read and maybe every now and then something I wrote that made my brain go brr.
So uhh here are some of my favorite things so you can feel aptly prepared for the kinda stuff I’ll talk about on here:
Books:
Follow Me To Ground by Sue Rainsford
We Have Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diane Wynne Jones
Podcasts:
Dear Hank & John
The Adventure Zone: Balance
The Bright Sessions
Olive Hill
Limetown
TV: & Movies:
“The Haunting of Hill House” (2018)
“Madoka Magica” (2011)
“Twin Peaks” (1990)
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (2015)
“The VVitch” (2015) (and A24 Horror in general)
“Emma” (2020)

Books Read In 2020: The Why
In a tradition I accidentally started for myself in 2016 and now quite enjoy, at the end of the year I look back at my reading list and answer the question, why did you read this particular book?
Below, my 100 reads of 2020 are split into groups by target readership age, plus nonfiction at the end, now with a bonus note about how I heard of it. Which I probably won’t continue to do next year, but it was fun to try.
ADULT FICTION
I read each of these books because...
A Glitter of Gold - Liz Johnson. 2019. It had me at "her pirate tour business," but between the shipwreck & the museum-director love interest it was like BLOOD & TREASURE ROMANCE AU LET'S GOOO.
How I heard of it: a book blog
The Last Woman in the Forest - Diane Les Becquets. 2019. Recommended by a dog lover; I'm down for a thriller about a woman who has a dream dog-inclusive job like this.
How I heard of it: a book blog
Good Omens - Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman. 1990. I really enjoyed the miniseries and wanted to see if the book everyone loved so much was as good (for the record: it was not. at least not if you’ve seen the miniseries first; otherwise they are probably equal).
This Is Home - Lisa Duffy. 2019. Attractive cover + I flipped it open to a random page and just liked the writing style.
How I heard of it: library
Dear Mr. Knightley - Katherine Reay. 2013. I'd had this on the back burner for a while because the MC sounded like me, and one day I got sick of not being able to find any fluffy contemporary romances with beta male heroes and decided Matthew Gray Gubler was gonna star in this one. (spoiler alert: it is a good book but that did not work)
How I heard of it: a book blog
Rubbernecker - Belinda Bauer. 2013. Criminal Minds sent me into a tailspin so I went hunting for books to cast Spencer Reid in again; the Asperger's/case-solving/difficult relationship with mother combo sounded promising. (spoiler alert: the med-student element + his social cluelessness proved too strong and I was only able to picture the kid from The Good Doctor)
How I heard of it: Googling keywords
The Swiss Affair - Emylia Hall. 2013. I got a random hankering for a student/teacher novel, and after scrutinizing the library catalog this was the only one that fit my parameters for gender, lack of adultery, and focus on romance over sex.
How I heard of it: library
Love At First Bark - Debbie Burns. 2019. I was trying to cast Wes/Jules [Dollface] in a romance novel, so I browsed through a Goodreads friend's "dog-romance" shelf and accidentally landed in a Jeid AU [Criminal Minds]. Which may or may not have been a large part of what turned me into a Jeid shipper (outside canon only).
The Mermaids Singing - Val McDermid. 1995. One final attempt to cast Reid in a novel -- a user in a Reddit post asking for this very thing suggested this, and "profiler with idiosyncracies" certainly fit.
The Wire in the Blood [and 9 subsequent novels] - Val McDermid, spanning 1997-2019. Turns out aside from being British, Reid paints onto Tony Hill EXCEPTIONALLY well, and I accidentally found myself with a little Jeid AU in the process, so obviously I read the entire series. Good crime-solving fun and all that.
Horse - Talley English. 2018. Random library pull because I connected with the writing style and it appeared to actually focus on horses.
How I heard of it: library
A Sparkle of Silver - Liz Johnson. 2018. I liked the author's other book and this was pretty much a remix of the same story, but now with a cool mansion/estate setting.
How I heard of it: looking up other books by this author
Everyone Is Beautiful - Katherine Center. 2009. Went looking for stories about strong marriages, found this on a Goodreads list of "second chance marriage" books, tripped into something like a season 9 Jim/Pam scenario. How I heard of it: Googling keywords
The Lost Husband - Katherine Center. 2013. Loved the previous book of hers I read, and the "starting life over on a goat farm" angle sounded like an ideal life to try on.
How I heard of it: looking up more from this author
The Shadow Year - Hannah Richell. 2013. Fixing up an old house?? I am THERE. Doing this in two timelines, one of which involves off-the-grid homesteading, is even better.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Mandrake Root - Janet Diebold. 1946. I needed a non-library book to bring on vacation, and after spinning in circles over what I thought would appeal to my mood in that setting, my brain randomly said "reread this one."
How I heard of it: estate sale
Path of the Jaguar - Vickie Britton & Loretta Jackson. 1989. Bought cheap for cheap thrills: a Yucatan adventure/mystery. Read now so I could get rid of it. How I heard of it: library sale
Burying Water - K.A. Tucker. 2014. The library didn't have The Simple Wild, but they DID have a book w/ an equally pretty cover that talked about a badly beaten young amnesiac (!) recovering on a horse farm (!!). What is: my top romance trope (hurt/comfort, bonus points for animals and rural setting).
How I heard of it: library
Happiness for Beginners - Katherine Center. Established quality author + summertime hiking inspiration.
How I heard of it: looking up more from this author
The Visitors - Simon Sylvester. Cool cover + setting, and a teenage protagonist usually makes adult fiction more accessible. How I heard of it: Goodreads
Becoming Rain - K.A. Tucker. 2014. I was in this companion novel solely for mentions of Alex and any people by the last name of Wells, but figured I might as well read all of it to ensure I didn't miss any. How I heard of it: looking up more from this author
The Guest List - Lucy Foley. 2020. Honestly, it just sounded like a cool thriller (and cool setting). How I heard of it: a book blog
You Deserve Nothing - Alexander Maksik. 2011. Fell down a Will/Rachel [Glee] rabbit hole and ravaged the student/teacher keyword in my library catalog again to scratch the itch.
The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson. 1959. Mom's been trying to get me to read this for years, and this time when it came up in conversation it was the right time of year, so I randomly decided to give it a shot. How I heard of it: Mom
The Walker in Shadows - Barbara Michaels. 1979. Gothic ghost story + beautiful architectural details in a historic house = yeah!
How I heard of it: Goodwill
YOUNG ADULT
People Like Us - Dane Mele. 2018. Needed an audiobook; a girls' boarding school murder mystery seemed most likely to hold my attention of the limited options. How I heard of it: Library
The Possibility of Now - Kim Culbertson. 2016. I will read anything by this author, and girl having a meltdown over a test = me. How I heard of it: looking up other books by this author
Rob&Sara.com - P.J. Petersen & Ivy Ruckman. 2004. Mostly I wanted to go back to my high school days and enjoy the format of a novel written in emails, but also, I like Ruckman. How I heard of it: used book sale
For Real - Alison Cherry. 2014. Fictional Amazing Race!! + awesome summery cover + sisters How I heard of it: library sale
The Summer After You + Me - Jennifer Salvato Doktorski. 2015. The awesome summery cover, mostly. How I heard of it: a book blog
You'd Be Mine - Erin Hahn. 2019. Gorgeous cover + the chance to vicariously follow a budding young country music star on tour for the summer.
How I heard of it: a book blog
Juniors - Kaui Hart Hemmings. 2015. The neat setting(s): a live-in guest on a wealthy estate in Hawaii. How I heard of it: Dollar store
Lion Boy's White Brother - Alden G. Stevens. 1951. Bought cheap because vintage juvenile book in a unique setting. Read now to see if I could get rid of it (NOPE).
How I heard of it: used bookstore
The O.C.: Spring Break - Aury Wallington. 2005. I keep meaning to finish this short series, and it was an easy title to count for my Mount TBR challenge.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Echo Island - Edward Karlow. 2017. Bought cheap because of the beautiful summery cover; easy read for Mount TBR so I could get rid of it. How I heard of it: library sale
Confessions of a High School Disaster - Emma Chastain. 2017. Read because of THE SUPER CUTE SUMMERY COVER (and diary format).
How I heard of it: Dollar store
Kentucky Daughter - Carol J. Scott. 1985. Working my way down the “Inappropriate Student/Teacher Relationships in YA" list because I'm in that kind of mood this year; chose this because 80s books tend to deliver the subject best*, the character reminded me of the girl in Send No Blessings, and Open Library had it. *this one was just blatant sexual harassment, though, and belonged very literally on that list
How I heard of it: Goodreads
What They Always Tell Us - Martin Wilson. 2008. I sorted the library catalog to see the oldest contemporary YA novels they still have before they get weeded, and "loner being taken under the wing of his older brother's (male) friend and falling in love with him" hit a couple of good tropes. How I heard of it: library
Bobby's Watching - Ted Pickford. 1993. Browsing around on OpenLibrary and saw they FINALLY had a copy of this book that scared me too much to finish as a kid, and which I've wanted to revisit ever since I remembered what it's called (Interlibrary Loan doesn't have it and it's Not Cheap to buy).
How I heard of it: library
Powwow Summer - Nahanni Shingoose. 2019. Always interested in modern-day Indigenous girls connecting w/ their heritage, especially if they're from my home state's tribe.
How I heard of it: a book blog
The Princesses of Iowa - M. Molly Backes. 2012. Appealing cover + heft suggesting a solid Midwestern contemporary, plus I liked the student teacher element (without a slash this time, as in "college student who is almost a teacher")
How I heard of it: library
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants - Ann Brashares. 2001. The Second Summer of the Sisterhood - Ann Brashares. 2003.
Long-intended reread of a college fave because I wanted see Mike Vogel in the movie, and it was summer so the stars aligned. Continued because the first book was as good as I remembered. (I would have kept going but Life distracted me for a bit and by the time I was back on track, it was no longer summer) How I heard of it: I...can't remember. Am the worst!
The Distance From Me To You - Marina Gessner a.k.a. Nina de Gramont. 2015. Hiking inspiration + an appealing-sounding romance. How I heard of it: Goodreads
Where Have All the Tigers Gone? - Lynn Hall. 1989. Will read any of her books, but specifically read this one because it seemed fairly autobiographical, and I read it NOW because it seemed durable enough to take on vacation. How I heard of it: looking up books by this author
And Both Were Young - Madeline L'Engle. 1949 (text of 1983 edition w/ material from original manuscript added back). Something reminded me of its existence and I requested it because it was the only non-animal-focused vintage teen novel I could physically get my hands on before Interlibrary Loan opened back up, and I had a craving for just that.
How I heard of it: library
The Other Side of Lost - Jessi Kirby. 2018. Established quality author + throw me ALL the thru-hike novels!
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Vow - Jessica Martinez. 2013. Perfect scenario to run an Abed/Annie [Community] AU!
How I heard of it: I want to say...an article on a book website (not personal blog this time) back in 2013.
Moon and Me - Hadley Irwin. 1981. Was just in the mood to read an 80s teen novel and this one helped me knock off a title for the Mount TBR challenge. From an author I like, w/ bonus horse content.
How I heard of it: used book sale.
Suicide Notes From Beautiful Girls - Lynn Weingarten. 2015. I bought a blind bag at the library sale and this was one of the only contemporary YA novels in it; figured I might as well read it since I'd liked a previous book of hers.
How I heard of it: Library
History Is All You Left Me - Adam Silvera. 2016.
With the Glee rabbit hole came a Klaine spiral; this was my season 4 Tragic AU dream for them and I've been saving it for a Klainey day ever since it was published. (No I am not sorry for that horrid pun.)
How I heard of it: googling keywords
The Museum of Heartbreak - Meg Leder. 2016. The cool cover/concept of a "museum" of items reeled me in; I bought a copy a while ago 'cause the library didn't have it. Read now to see if I could get rid of it (NOPE).
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Me & Mr. J - Rachel McIntyre. 2015. Student/teacher novel that looked especially appealingly tame so I'd been saving it, but then Open Library notified me it was now only available in 1-hour increments, and I got paranoid it would disappear altogether (it's not cheap to buy or available via ILL), so I wanted it in my brain.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Dear Evan Hansen - Val Emmich w/ Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul. 2018. Fell in love with the DEH soundtrack. Play's summary sounded good -- getting to experience it in YA novel form?? Amazing.
How I heard of it: Wikipedia
Saddle a Thunderbolt - Jo Sykes. 1967
Bought a while ago because vintage horse story. Read now specifically to alleviate my pre-homesickness about moving by imagining living in an even more beautiful place than home.
How I heard of it: either a used book sale or a used bookstore...
Learning to Breathe - Janice Lynn Mather. 2018. This was mentioned on a lost-book forum and "girl with unplanned pregnancy supports herself by getting a job cleaning" piqued my interest; the setting (Bahamas) and cover made it better.
How I heard of it: Reddit
Everglades Adventure - James Ralph Johnson. 1970. Standard vintage boys' adventure-in-nature story; I like those.
How I heard of it: Goodwill
CHILDREN’S/MIDDLE GRADE
Little Women - Louisa May Alcott. 1868. Seeing the new movie and falling head over heels was what it took to FINALLY convince me to reread this childhood fave.
How I heard of it: can't remember; I was a kid
A Little Princess - Frances Hodgson Burnett. 1905. I was perusing a lot of books about classic children's books and it started to bug me that I had skipped this appealing-sounding one as a kid.
How I heard of it: can't remember; I was a kid
Little Men - Louisa May Alcott. 1871. LW sparked a fandom revival and I wanted more detail about the Marches' adult lives (esp. Jo & Bhaer), even on the fringes.
How I heard of it: library
Lady and the Tramp - Ward Greene. I saw a quote from the new movie under a gifset on Tumblr that sounded like it came from a book, and upon Googling out that one existed, I obviously could not allow the book version of a beloved childhood animal-movie fave to go unread. Especially after finding out it was super rare so reading it would be a privilege.
The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett. 1910. Read for the same reason as A Little Princess. Can’t have one without the other, you know.
How I heard of it: was a kid; can't remember
The Mother-Daughter Book Club - Heather Vogel Fredericks. 2007. Much Ado About Anne - Heather Vogel Fredericks. 2008.
Always thought the series looked cute/reminded me of The Teashop Girls, but the fact that the first book they read is Little Women gave me the impetus to finally read this one. First book was darling so I continued to the next (but failed to continue beyond because COVID shut the library down until I was out of the mood).
How I heard of it: library
Nature Girl - Jane Kelley. 2010. I wanted walking inspiration.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
From You to Me - K.A. Holt. 2018. Mistook it for a similar-looking book I'd seen at the same time (See You On A Starry Night), but figured I'd give the 8th grade bucket list idea a shot once I had it. How I heard of it: Goodreads
Semiprecious - D. Anne Love. 2006. Cute cover + I'm starting to be a big fan of what I call "contemporary historical," for stories set mid-20th century.
How I heard of it: library
Dandy's Mountain - Thomas Fall. 1967. Vintage horse-inclusive children's book in a rural setting, I'm sold. Not to mention, love reading a summer setting in summer.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Littler Women: A Modern Retelling - Laura Schaefer. 2017. The only way to make the Little Women MORE magical is to make them younger, modern, and written by a proven quality author.
How I heard of it: a book blog
Behind The Attic Wall - Sylvia Cassedy. 315 pg/1983.
A Goodreads friend strongly recommended it as similar to but better than Mandy, and reading about it in 100 Best Books For Children sealed the deal. Read now for the Mount TBR challenge.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Jigsaw Jungle - Kristin Levine. 2018. I am a COMPLETE sucker for books told in non-traditional/scrapbook-esque format.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Runt - Marion Dane Bauer. 2002. Wolf story by a quality author. Read now after owning it for a decade to see if I could get rid of it.
How I heard of it: used book sale
The King of the Cats - Rene Guillot. 1959. Bought cheap for a quick read because vintage animal story. Read now so I could get rid of it.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Just The Beginning - Betty Miles. 1976. Found cheap; always down to read a vintage book about an average girl (and I wanted to know how she'd cope with her mom being "a cleaning lady in a town full of classmates who HAVE cleaning ladies").
How I heard of it: used book sale
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - J.K. Rowling. 1997. Been meaning to reread the series for a while now; finally got motivation to check out the illustrated edition 'cause Christmastime.
How I heard of it: originally Mom; a book blog for this edition
Echo Mountain - Lauren Wolk. 2020. Almost entirely because of the incredible clipart cover, promising me nature and a dog (and because I could get it as an e-audiobook from the library).
How I heard of it: a book blog
Knock Three Times - Cressida Cowell. 2019. I needed another audiobook for bedtime/walks and I know that David Tennant will provide.
How I heard of it: more by this author (more accurately, narrator)
NONFICTION
The Red Leather Diary: Reclaiming A Life Through The Pages Of A Lost Journal - Lily Koppel. 2008. I'm kind of obsessed with the concept of historical 5-year diaries -- and finding one like this is The Dream.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
I'd Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life - Anne Bogel. 2018. Attractive and compact book about the pleasures of being a reader? A headspace I want to be in.
How I heard of it: library
100 Best Books for Children - Anita Silvey. 2004. I'm big on looking at lists of books for children this year. These are the kind of books I know, love, and want to hear people talk about, now that I know books about these books exist.
How I heard of it: library
The Coming of Saska - Doreen Tovey Originally bought because it was cheap and featured animals, I needed a non-library book to bring on vacation, and this one is a durable ex-library copy in plastic wrap that featured a similar setting to where I was going, so: thematic.
Cats in the Belfry - Doreen Tovey. 1957. Wanted more of her books, and lo and behold the library had the first one.
How I heard of it: more by this author
Sorry Not Sorry - Naya Rivera. 2016. I'll read anything the Glee kids write, and this doubled as an easy number for the Mount TBR challenge.
How I heard of it: entertainment news websites
Living Large in Our Little House - Kerri Fivecoat-Campbell. 2016. I love tiny houses. And this one specifically mentioned living with dogs. And had color photographs.
How I heard of it: used bookstore
I'm Your Biggest Fan: Awkward Encounters and Assorted Misadventures in Celebrity Journalism. - Kate Coyne. 2016. Found cheap at a library sale -- loved the chapter headings and the fact that they were all about celebrities I knew.
Adrift - Tami Oldham Ashcraft w/ Suesea McGearheart. 1998/2018 edition. The movie was so awesome that I couldn't wait for more details about the real story in her own words.
I'll Be Gone In The Dark [NF] - Michelle McNamara. 2018. Been reading a lot of true crime write-ups on Reddit lately; decided it was time to pick up this well-received one.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Dear Evan Hansen: Waving Through A Window - Steven Levenson. 2017. Much like The Grimmerie for Wicked, once I fell in love with the DEH soundtrack and looked up the plot summary, I wanted to read the musical's detailed background/behind the scenes story + libretto before I watched it.
How I heard of it: Wikipedia
Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune - Bill Dedman & Paul Clark Newell. 2013. Love me a story about a mansion (or three). Or the reclusive and insanely wealth heiress who owns them, that works too.

JACKSON CRAWFORD ON WOMEN OF THE VIKING WORLD.
.
youtube
WELL WORTH A LISTEN.
RE SPINNING AND WEAVING, I SPIN USING A DROP SPINDLE AND WHEEL. WHEN I PERFORMED VIKING AGE REENACTMENT (DOMESTIC LIFE EXHIBITS) I CREATED MY OWN WARP WEIGHTED LOOM FROM BOAT OARS AND HOLED ROCKS FROM THE BEACH FOR WEIGHTS. I NO LONGER HAVE IT BUT WISH I DID.
WHEN IT COMES TO SPINNING, BOTH SPINDLE AND WHEEL ARE CAPABLE OF INSTILLING THAT TRANCELIKE STATE OF MIND WHICH ALLOWS A WOMAN TO SCRY THE FUTURE OR SIMPLY FIND INSIGHTS INTO PROBLEMS, ISSUES OR THE ANSWER TO DREAMS OF OMEN.
THE ACTION OF SPINNING, REPETETIVE AND CONSTANT, SMOOTH AND HYPNOTIC, COUPLED WITH THE DEFTNESS OF FINGERS GROWN USED TO THE TASK OF SPINNING BRING ABOUT A RHYTHM THAT THRUMS THE MIND, THE SUBCONSCIOUS. IT WORKS THE WAY ANY REPETETIVE, LENGTHY ACTION DOES...LULLS THE MIND INTO THE TASK AND SETS IT FREE AT THE SAME TIME.
MANY SPEYWIVES AND SEIDRKONA PRACTITIONERS USED SPINNING AND WEAVING PARTICULARLY TO PRACTICE FAR SEEING, MAGIC AND SPELL WEAVING.
AS AN ASIDE, I WAS ONCE GIVEN A LOVELY OLD MEDIEVAL DROP SPINDLE WHORL WHICH I STILL USE. IT’S OF CARVED STONE WITH BEAUTIFUL, AGE SMOOTHED LITTLE KNOBS ALL AROUND IT. (MEMO TO SELF: DIG IT OUT OF BOTTOM OF KNITTING BAG TO TAKE PIC)
PIC BELOW IS OF A FEW THINGS...THE VIKING AGE REPRO METAL WEAVING SHEARS WERE FORGED FOR ME BY MY BLACKSMITH SON-IN-LAW (WHO IS ALSO A FARMER IN ORKNEY), BELOW IT IS THE WHALE TOOTH, IT’S A SPECIAL TOOTH AND I’LL DO ANOTHER BLOG ON IT SOMETIME. I’VE LIVED ALL MY LIFE ON ISLANDS...SCOTLAND, ORKNEY, THE HEBRIDES AND NOW, IRELAND. THE SEA HAS ALWAYS BEEN PART OF MY LIFE.
BELOW THAT IS A CARVED COWBONE, USED TO PAT THE WEFT DOWN ON A WARP WEIGHTED LOOM.
AND BELOW THAT IS A PIECE OF FOSSILISED MAMMOTH TUSK. ANIMISM IS A HUGE PART OF WHO I AM. BUT EXPLAINING THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT MAMMOTH TUSK PIECE WOULD TAKE TOO LONG FOR THIS BLOG. BUT I JUST WANTED TO SHOW IT. :)
MY SPINNING WHEEL IS A VINTAGE FLEMISH WHEEL FROM MY HUSBAND’S NATIVE FLANDERS. THE WOOD IS DARK AND SMOOTH WITH AGE AND USE, IT STILL WORKS PERFECTLY. IT’S A SMALL WHEEL AND JUST RIGHT FOR ME. IT LIVES NEXT TO THE RANGE IN THE HEART OF THE COTTAGE, BUT NOT SO CLOSE THE HEAT WOULD DAMAGE IT.
MY FAVOURITE WOOLS FOR SPINNING? ICELANDIC, HEBRIDEAN AND NORTH RONALDSAY WOOLS.

Bodyguard - Chapter Fifty “Black Holes and Revelations”
Hello everybody, how are you? Here is chapter Fifty of my Story Bodyguard. I hope you will like this chapter. I’m truly sorry for not posting a lot but this semester is crazy, I have so many things to do...
I’m sorry in advance for the mistakes… English isn’t my first language and I do my best. Here is the link to the previous chapter: Click Here.
I hope you will enjoy this chapter :) 💛
–––––––––––––––––––––––
- A drink, Mister Hunt?
Eyes into space, installed at the counter, I raise my head detaching myself from the observation absent from the hotel bar.
I stayed for two days in this establishment which was my favorite address in Seattle, in Downtown: I had spent many stays there in the past between two planes or two missions.
My gaze rests on Roberto, the barman of the hotel and I offer him a slight smile.
- Yes, thank you, Roberto.
- What would you like? And don’t limit yourself, it’s offered by the house, he specifies with a wink.
I smile a little more, touched by his attention, to believe that my absent and distant attitude had not gone unnoticed.
- A glass of Bordeaux please and that’s nice for your offer, but I don’t want you to be in trouble for me.
- Don’t worry. A glass of Saint-Emilion then, he continues, dexterously serving me a glass of particularly prized wine. If you need anything else, don’t hesitate, he said.
- Thank you very much, Roberto, I conclude while letting him go away and take care of the other customers present in the bar.
My mind escapes again after this interruption, stopping on the last two days that I have just spent.
Two days of emptiness, boredom, and worry.
I was more distraught than anticipated in this situation: without a mission, dismissed as a beginner.
Until then, I have always been master of my professional context: my contract ends were well thought out or prepared.
After a sense of duty accomplished.
Or a jointly agreed departure when my weariness was too big.
But there, none of that: an unpleasant feeling of unfinished business, a sum of tensions whereas unlike Amelia, I am convinced that the threat still lurks.
And here I am: I’ve been going in circles for two days in this hotel.
Like a caged lion.
I stayed cloistered, to avoid approaching her neighborhood, to watch her apartment, a strong drive to silence my discomfort and reassure myself.
I feel a coward at the same time because I didn't dare to inform Jackson or Nathan of the situation. I didn’t see how I could justify Amelia’s decision to them without revealing my weakness. This episode of bewilderment of which I am still so ashamed and even more today after all the consequences which ensue from it.
.
“That’s not your problem, anymore.” she told me.
But it’s stronger than me, I can’t turn the page as easily and no longer worry about her fate overnight… after having lived with her for long months and having shared moments that still resonate unexpectedly in me.
It was no longer tenable and I had made the best decision the day before.
I just had to wait a bit…
- Good evening, can I sit next to you?
An unexpected presence is revealed on my right with a soft and singing voice.
I turn my head and discover a young woman with long brown hair, dressed in a tight-fitting, low-cut white dress: she stares at me, waiting for my answer.
- Uh… yes, of course… please, I end up telling her.
She immediately sits on the stool by my side, placing her stilettos against the metal ledge to stand up straight.
- What are you drinking?
- A glass of Bordeaux, I answer a little absent.
- It’s a good vintage, you advise me?
I can see a light accent in her sentences, a touch of melody that reminds me of a Latin country.
- It’s a Saint-Emilion, among the best wines of France.
- I’m going to take the same thing then, I don’t know much about wine… I don’t have your intuition…
- On the other hand, it is not necessarily very cheap…
- It’s not a problem, she replies without particular emotions.
She beckons to Roberto and actually orders him a glass similar to mine. I observe her out of the corner of my eye during this conversation: she had a very fine face, almost perfect skin texture, and her equally flawless, slender and feminizer silhouette.
The style of woman we turn to on the street.
And yet, would I have turned on her?
I’m not even sure I would have noticed her in the bar.
- Hum, it’s a delight this wine, she reacts suddenly after a sip. I’m jealous of not being French in these kinds of moments…
- Where are you from? I asked a little surprised to start the discussion again, but the question had been burning my lips for a few seconds.
- I’m Italien, my name is Monica, she says with a smile.
She scrutinizes me intensely as if she is waiting for something. But I remain disconnected from the moment and the conversation before she speaks to me again.
- And you?
- Owen.
- Nice to meet you, Owen, she repeats with a smile.
I do not answer her, contenting myself with a slight movement of the head.
I look back into my glass, I didn’t want to be rude but I also did not want to have a conversation of convenience.
A silence of a few minutes settles in, but I still perceive this presence by my side and like the weight of a look that studies me.
- What’s her name?
- Excuse me?
I redirect my attention to this young woman by my side, taken aback by her question.
- That pensive and melancholy air. I only know one reason to see it settle so firmly on a man’s face. And in general, there is always a woman behind… Am I wrong?
- Not completely, but it’s not for the reasons you assume.
- I don’t suppose anything, but she obviously occupies your mind largely, she continues while taking a sip of her glass. I’ve been watching you for a few minutes, you have to be blind not to notice yourself in a room, she concludes with a smile.
I look away, uncomfortable with the turn of the exchange.
- Were you expecting someone? I asked her as a signal to dismiss her politely.
- Not anymore. I am delivered from my evening commitments.
Her expression intrigues me as if she were there for obligation and not to spend the evening with a husband, a fiancé or a lover.
- You might be better off finding him…
- I was not there for personal convenience, you know…
- Sorry, but seeing you in a hotel at 9pm and dressed like that, I thought you had a date…
- Somehow, I had to find a photographer to prepare a shoot.
So she was a model, nothing surprising considering her physique.
- But I am very relieved that it is no longer relevant. Maybe I can help you spend a less moody evening.
- I’m only here for a few minutes, I’m going to leave soon.
- A few minutes are enough if they are well used, you know, she argues with a piercing and intense look.
I had the impression to discern strong innuendo in her words and at the same time, I thought of interpreting things, we only spoke for a few minutes after all.
- She left you?
- Excuse me?
- The woman who haunts your thoughts, she left you?
- Yes…well, no… it’s complicated…
- It’s always complicated, she resumes with a slight smile. But things always get better, over time. Love makes us suffer, but it also makes us stronger. Without it, we would only live half…
I had drawn a line of love for several years.
I had painfully and laboriously patched up my heart, but I had taken care to protect it, to surround it with a fortress, of which I threw the key.
Have I been living half since?
Maybe, but living fully with an open wound that bleeds daily was worse than anything…
- She will understand, she will forgive you.
- How do you know I have something to make me forgive?
- I didn’t know it, but you just confirmed it to me. But you shouldn’t be moping like that, loneliness is worse than anything…
I observe her and notice her eyes for the first time.
Two blue pupils with sparkling reflections.
A certain melancholy and sadness are revealed as if she spoke a little about herself through her remark.
A look that destabilizes me… because it looks so much like hers…
- You look like her… I whispered. You have the same…
The sentence escapes me despite me and I can see the young woman’s eyes getting a little bigger and a smile settling on her face.
- You don’t have to call me Monica, you know, she whispers in my ear while letting her hand rest on my forearm.
I stay motionless, my gaze fixed on her hand.
- You are very attractive and mysterious… I’m not used to saying that to a man I met for only a few minutes, but I like you a lot…
I fix her gaze a little more intensely and I look for something in it… something that I cannot identify or define but that I cannot find…
- I have a suite upstairs, I’m as alone as you are this evening, she continues in the hollow of my ear.
Her proximity makes me feel the warmth of her presence while her scent also invades my nostrils.
An olfactory stimulus that breaks the charm and illusion that insidiously settled.
No vanilla and coconut notes.
There are fresh and flowery touches that awaken me bringing me back to this reality: she is a stranger in front of me and not Amelia.
Amelia who should no longer be the center of my concerns…
- I wish you a good evening, Monica, I answer weakly as she detaches from me.
I read surprise and a barely concealed hint of irritation in her eyes.
Clearly, she was not used to being send-off like this by a man.
- Do you often refuse propositions like mine? She challenges me with a piercing look.
- When I’m not tempted, yes…
She laughs suddenly after my answer, then speaks again.
- Not tempted by a lay without commitment? Are you sure you are a male?
- I may not be like all men, so.
- Not like all men, that’s for sure… she is very lucky, she said before getting up and leaving the bar, leaving her glass half full.
.
Silence and emptiness reign around me again.
This interlude leaves me perplexed and disconcerted despite myself.
In the past, I would not have refused an invitation of this kind, from such a beautiful woman and in a context completely free of all constraints.
It was exactly what I was looking for: no attachment, no commitment.
Feelingless relationships.
Episodes to satisfy my body without endangering my heart.
So why did I refuse her advances?
Why did I think of Amelia at the time?
Why did I push this woman away when I realized that she was different?
Without that familiar, comforting scent of coconut… which I miss.
My reactions seem incomprehensible to me, my thoughts unfathomable.
I don’t understand what’s going on, or rather yes, I’m starting to understand, but I don’t want to admit it. The revelation that strikes me is almost too destabilizing.
It would be to recognize that I lost a battle that I thought behind me for a long time.
A revelation as a vivid and frank signal of my failure.
- Mister Hunt?
Roberto’s intervention takes me out of my thoughts and I find the image of the young man in front of me, rebind the counter.
- Your taxi is waiting for you, he says, catching my eyes.
- Thank you, Roberto, I answer offering him a smile.
- I hope you had a good stay with us and that we will see you again very soon.
- Probably, thank you for everything, I said shaking his hand to support my words.
So I leave the bar and join the hotel entrance.
A first doorman opens the doors to the building and a second presents the open door of the taxi.
- Your luggage is in the trunk, Sir.
- Thank you very much, I answer while getting into the car.
- Where should I take you? Immediately asks the driver.
- Seattle Tacoma Airport, please.
.
The car starts slowly and my gaze captures a silhouette outside the hotel.
A gorgeous young woman in a tight white dress smoking a cigarette.
Monica, my temptation for an evening: the Owen of six months ago could not resist.
But today everything is different: I see her go away as the car picks up speed, without any regrets.
No frustration, just calm in me.
.
The decorations parade through the window: Seattle streets, myriad of cars and the concrete landscape of the ring road.
I take this ride to print in my mind these images and this atmosphere of Seattle.
In a few hours, it will only be a memory, when kilometers and an ocean will separate me from my country… and from her.
With the distance, I will be able to more easily forger this unfinished mission, to ignore this paralyzing fear that something will happen to her.
In any case, that’s all I hope: to change the environment to stifle this haunting worry and this drive to find her because it is only with her that I would feel useful.
.
- We arrived, Sir.
The driver turns to me and I realize that we have been stopped for a good minute while « Terminal 2E » covers the entrance of the swing doors visible outside.
I get my wallet in my jacket pocket and pay the driver.
He gets out of the car and I imitate him, finding him near the trunk as he hands me my luggage, a simple little cabin suitcase.
- I wish you a good trip.
- Thank you, I answer while feeling a vibration in my jacket pocket.
I take a few steps towards the entrance to the terminal to get away from the noise caused by the ballet of taxis and buses accessing the airport.
I get my cellphone and answer immediately by reading the name that lights up the screen… my heart misses a beat and my throat tightens… in amazement.
- Amelia?
A breath resounds in the handset for a few seconds, then a weak but familiar voice finally answers me.
- Owen…. I need you…

Thank you for reading. I’ll try to post a chapter Friday or Sunday. Have a great week 💛

EVERYTHING FOR A WEEKEND IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
NOLA (New Orleans Louisiana) is such a quirky, fun, beautiful place filled with friendly people and AHHHHmazing food. Walking around the French Quarter and popping in and out of places you will find tons of food and drinks and loads of fun! If you are in need of some local references for food, drinks, or entertainment, then you have come to the right place! Here is everything you need to know to visit NOLA and have the time of your life!
FOODS YOU SHOULD TOTALY TRY IN NOLA:
Boiled Crawfish - Technically, you can find crawfish year round. But, many local will tell you, only eat boiled crawfish during crawfish season! The rest of the year it is either frozen local crawfish or it is sourced from elsewhere.
Beignets - Cafe Du Monde - This is a must! They have been serving Beignets since the Civil War! The line is often long so if you need a back up spot, Cafe Beignet is a great option as well.
Pecan Pralines - Try pralines or fudge at any of the little shops. Super sweet, but yummy. Loretta’s in the French Market is really good.
King Cake - If you find it, eat it! King Cake is seasonal and typically found during Mardi Gras and it is SO yummy! It is basically a mix between a donut and cake stuffed with cream. You will love it!
Hot Sauce - Spice is a HUGE thing in Louisiana! Every place in the Quarter has dozens of them to try. Some are so hot you have to sign a waiver eating!
Chicory - OK. This is not my thing, but it is very much a NOLA thing. Chicory in Coffee is huge. Personally it isn’t for me, but by all means try it.
Po-Boys - It is a sandwich stuffed with various meats usually fried shrimp or seafood. In the Quarter you can go to Cafe Masperos or Johnny’s Po-Boys or Erin Rose, but the best one in the city and where you will find me every day is Parkview Bakery! It is worth the uber ride, and it is such a great, local, backyard vibe.
Muffalettas - Central Grocery Co. is a super famous spot for this. I don’t eat meat so I have never had it, but everyone raves about it!
Oysters - Full disclosure, I have never eaten or even tried an oyster, but I have heard that Antoine’s Restaurant or Felix’s is the way to go for that.
Hurricane Alcoholic Drink - Pat Obrien’s is famous for this, but they have them everywhere.
Hand Grenades - These are a huge thing on Bourbon. Be warned, the sugar masks the liquor and you will be beyond drunk afterward.
Absinthe - Pirate’s Alley is the place for it. 55% alcohol makes it a doozy. Their version is the legal limit.
SnowBalls - I lived for these as a kid, and Hansens is the place in the city to get it.
World Famous Fried Chicken - Willie Maes has been on every food network show and is SUPER famous. It is supposed to be life changing chicken. Now they have created a bit of a chain, but make sure to visit the original location.
Gumbo, Jambalaya, and Étouffée - These will be served lots of places and worth trying. Best spots: Jambayala - Coop’s Place / Gumbo - Stanley's
BEST COFFEE AND BREAKFAST NEW ORLEANS:
My favorite breakfast spot in the whole city is in the Lower Garden District at Hivolt Coffee. It is the best coffee in the city including pour overs and the pastries and breakfast are all great!
If you are in the Warehouse District there is a Stumptown Coffee in the Ace Hotel which is a great option as well!
Brennans is super famous for breakfast. I have never been. But, worth pointing out. Make sure to get a reservation.
When in town, I usually eat at Sasuma Cafe. Cheap, simple, and healthy, something hard to find in Louisiana some times ;)
Another favorite of mine is Surrey’s. To be fair, I have never tried anything other than their pancakes, but I don’t need to! Their pancakes are the best!
Elizabeth’s in Bywater is a super traditional southern breakfast with smothered everything and great biscuits. It is really good and a great way to try southern food!
Ruby Slipper is also a fun spot with cajun/creole breakfast influences. It is probably the best breakfast spot to please everyone and still get to try some unique things.
BEST BARS IN THE FRENCH QUARTER:
Pat O’Briens dueling pianos is a must! It usually has a line, but once you get in it is such a blast. They basically pack people into a room with two dueling pianos that play any song request and everyone in the room sings as loud as possible to classics and shares drinks. It can really be a blast!
Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop is the oldest structure in the city to have a bar so it is a great spot to grab a drink.
Carousel Bar - This bar is inside of a hotel. There is a carousel inside it that moves and is it’s claim to fame. It doesn’t sprinkle my donuts, but people seem to love it!
Pirate’s Alley - if you dare try the absinthe. This is a famous spot and the only place in the city to sell legal absinthe. Fair warning the alcohol content level is HIGH.
Saints and Sinners - Nothing crazy about this other than Channing Tatum owns it so the girls tend to love it. And, for that reason, it is worth pointing out.
Ace Hotel’s rooftop is a really beautiful space! One of my favorite spots. My girlfriend from Los Angels and I always laugh going there cause its definitely like the other Ace Hotels in terms of lack of friendliness and run by New Yorkers. But, still the rooftop bar is super nice!
Frenchmen Street - SUPER famous for Jazz music. Places like the Spotted Cat are where all the greats played back in the day. It is the locals version of Bourbon Street, or at least it used to be. Typically, you can find lots of live music and fun spots.
Tchoup Yard is a super fun spot and great for a day hang out. There are loads of backyard games and outdoor vibes and usually lots of locals just playing corn hole and drinking beers. It is also located right where lots of brewers have popped up which is new to the city, so it is a great day drinking spot.
Musical Legends Park is such a cute romantic spot (maybe the only one) on Bourbon. I think it is only Friday nights, but a live jazz band plays outside and for a moment you feel like you are in a European city. Swoon.
Bourbon Street is filled with dozens and dozens of bars and intoxicated people. It is not where locals tend to hang out, but if you are looking to experience this side of NOLA and have a blast doing it, just pop in and out of all the bars along the street. No destination is needed here.
GOOD EATS NEW ORLEANS:
Cochon Butcher and Cochon Restaurant are both really good spots in the warehouse district with great vibes and food with a local twist. (Cochon means “pig” so that says a lot about what is on the menu).
Peche is a nice restaurant as well. Peche means “fish” so there is a lot of seafood dishes here. Nice vibes. Good food.
Pizza Domenica - Great pizzas and pastas and garlic bread knots, and a nice break from fried food.
Josephine Estelle in the Ace Hotel is a great little spot. More Los Angeles type foods like anything with a vegetable (lol) than the other places listed. Plus, you can pop up to the rooftop bar afterward.
NOLA in the French Quarter is really good. Typical cajun and creole dishes that are really well done. More pricey.
Emeril’s is super famous and fancy pants. I have never been. Heard great things! More pricey.
Commander’s Palace is SUPER famous and supposedly really amazing. Never been. Hard to get a resi. Heard amazing things! Most pricey.
St. Roch is a great stop and my personal favorite place to get biscuits. There are several vendors in this space like a small market and it is a great way to try different foods in the city!
BEST TOURIST STOPS NEW OREANS:
Napoleon’s House (yep, he had a house there that is now a restaurant) The food is not life changing, but it is cool to see. And, full disclosure, Napoleon died before getting to visit this house, so he never lived here, but it was built for him.
There are lots of huge plantation style homes in the Garden District one of which is where Mark Twain used to throw parties. These old southern homes are to die for.
Near there is St. Charles Ave. where 300-400 year old oak trees line the street. You gotta take a trolley ride down this street and see it. It is beautiful.
Jackson Square in front of the St. Louis Cathedral which is the most popular photo spot and dates back hundreds of years.
Cemeteries - Due to being below sea level, graves are all above ground in NOLA. And, many of them date back centuries and are well worth a visit. You can even visit Marie Laveaus (the famous Voodoo Queen’s) tomb. Across from Commander’s Palace is Lafayette Cemetery which is free to visit. My recommendation for a more historical tour would be to visit St. Louis Cemetery where notables have been buried. You have to do a tour, but it’s great. OH, and you can see the period tomb Nicholas Cage had built for when he dies. Kinda wild.
Swamp Tours - This isn’t necessarily “historic” perse other than people having been boating here for centuries and the cypress trees are hundreds of years old. The tours are a whole lot of fun and you get to see alligators out in the wild! I highly recommend doing one to see a completely different type of landscape and life on the bayou.
Museums - There are lots of great museums all within walking distance of each other. So, if you are looking for a break from Bourbon street this is your spot. The WW II museum is one of the best tin the country and a great way to spend the afternoon. There are also wonderful art museums like the Ogden and the Contemporary.
WHERE TO SHOP NEW ORLEANS:
The French Market in the French Quarter is the best place to shop for souvenirs and fun little things. Most of the goods are on the cheaper side so it is fun to walk about. As a kid, this was always my favorite spot!
If vintage clothing is your thing, then Royale Street is a great place for all things vintage. There are several vintage boutiques specializing in unique period clothing.
There are loads of Local shops selling New Orleans designers like Krewe Sunglasses which are great and well worth the stop in.
Magazine Street is my favorite street in the city and it is filled with loads of shops, antiques, and great eateries. It is a great way to spend an afternoon outside of bourbon. Just take the trolley car from the French Quarter.
WHAT TO PACK FOR A WEEKEND IN NEW ORLEANS:
Casual is a way of life there. While a few trendy spots have come to town and people dress more trendy/urban in those spots, for the most part, it is casual. The city is so laid-back and truly no one will care what you are wearing.
Comfy Shoes - The streets and sidewalks are uneven and often cobblestone. Tourism causes a lot of trash. And, rain doesn’t help. So, I recommend comfy shoes like tennis shoes that you are ok to get scuffed up and wet and maybe even just toss after the trip.
Sunscreen - The heat is no joke here!
Hat for sun - A hat or even an umbrella to protect against the sun is a must in the summer and maybe even year round!
Sunglasses - As mentioned above, sun protection is a must!
Backpack - I am a backpacker type of tourist because with all the heat and alcohol you will want water and a place to store your raincoat and sunscreen, etc. Plus, like in any tourist spot, keeping your things safe and protected is the way to go!
Toilet Paper/Kleenex packets - The French Quarter is old and packed with people. The bathrooms aren’t guaranteed to have TP in them so make sure to bring some! Oh and a few baby wipes wouldn’t hurt either!
Rain Coat/Jacket - If it rains, umbrellas are quite difficult on the narrow sidewalks, so a rain coat is the way to go.
Bug Spray - When it is too cold there aren’t mosquitoes, but GURL mosquitoes are a very real thang there, especially if you are going on a swap tour in the summer!
Cash - A lot of the city will accept credit card, but there are still quite a few places that are cash only. Quite literally some spots have been cash only for centuries. So, I recommend keeping some handy.
STAY SAFE AND LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!
While the city is without a doubt one of my favorite places, it does have a darker side not all that different than parts of Los Angeles. So, I recommend being vigilant. As a tourist, you can be a target, so while I have never had anything happen, it is a high possibility. Put simply, I would just do your best to keep your wits about you and not flash money. Stay safe!

The 100 6x10 “Matryoshka” Review
You know, when I was assigned this episode to review, I wasn’t expecting to be discussing a moment like THAT (you all know what I’m referring to), so please, be kind while I process by obsessively refreshing Twitter and try to put my thoughts together.
There’s definitely a lot going on in this episode, some of which I LOVED (take a wild guess on what part that is folks), and some of which I was less than fond of. It’s all high tension and high stakes, even more than the last. I’m a big fan of the moves they made to set everything into place; this is probably one of my favorite episodes of the season.
Action and Reaction
Here’s the thing. Putting almost all of your characters in one place forces conversation and development, which can turn out fascinating, or it can illuminate the truly unnecessary plot points and characters that have been hanging on all season.
Raven and Abby are back from space and being taken prisoner like the rest of the Arkadians when Simone, angry about the loss of both the synthetic nightblood and the mind drive they used for Kane, tells Abby that Clarke is dead. As the audience we know that this isn’t exactly true, but Abby has no reason to think she’s alive, since every other host body is completely taken over by whoever’s mind drive is put in that body.
I was pretty peeved with both Raven and Abby’s reactions to Clarke’s “death,” even though it’s been an ongoing joke online that Josie!Clarke could basically say and do anything and Abby still wouldn’t notice that something was up with her daughter. Raven’s been mad at Clarke for the entire season, so I guess I understand a lack of reaction on her part — but Abby? Her lack of reaction is only so off-putting because just last episode we saw an absolute outpouring of grief over Kane. It makes no sense that the news of her only child’s death wouldn't even garner 10% of that.
The thing is, that’s poor characterization either way. Failing to show an emotional response that makes sense is a failure of the writing, and making her grief over Kane much more significant than over Clarke on purpose only highlights how far gone she is. That’s not a character worth keeping around, especially if this difference in emotion and priority is never addressed (and I don’t think it’s going to be). If the writers room is so keen on keeping her around they need to put some effort into showing the audience why that’s worthwhile. I know there are people who like Abby, but when it comes down to plot, what purpose does she serve? In a cast so large they need to trim loose ends or suffer for it, and I think hanging onto Abby for so long is an example of that. What has she done all season besides hole up in the library looking for a way to heal Kane, who’s been technically dead since the Season 5 finale? You could argue that they need her for the synthetic nightblood, but giving Becca’s notebook to Raven and having her do it also makes sense, especially since Abby doesn’t even leverage that ability when she should. Case in point: when Russell decides to burn them all at the stake after Simone’s murder, Murphy is the one who brings up being able to make nightblood from bone marrow, thereby saving everyone from a super vintage execution (for now).
While we’re at it — I can’t believe Abby is actually mad at Murphy for helping the Primes, even though he and Emori explain that they both thought Clarke was actually dead and nothing could be done about it. Sure, what Murphy did was a little cold and sketchy at best, but it’s right on brand. Clarke’s dead? Nothing can be done about it? Better leverage this to my advantage. Self preservation, baby. That’s much less than Abby did literally ONE episode ago, being fully complicit in Gavin’s murder and actually recruiting him to host Kane’s mind drive even though she knew exactly what would happen.
That’s exactly why these scenes with everyone felt stale: not every character is pulling their weight, and when that happens the scene gets bogged down with unnecessary interactions. There’s too many characters that really only take up space. Characters like Jackson, Miller, Niylah, and even Echo are dead weight at this point. Again, I know that these characters have their fans. That doesn’t change the fact that as far as the narrative is concerned, they're all relatively useless. Just being a named character doesn’t automatically give them significance, that significance has to be shown. What exactly does Miller bring to the show? Or Niylah? Even if they were once important that importance is dwindling if not non-existent. Miller could have been a compelling character: he was Bellamy’s right hand man in Season 1. He’s one of the original hundred. They could have done more with him, but in reality he’s replaceable. If you took Miller, Jackson, and Niylah out of the show, nothing would change. You could even say the same for Abby and Echo; they have more screen time than the rest, but Abby’s continued presence on the show feels forced and Echo is far from a developed character. Their “skills” can easily be transferable to other characters. Characters like Jordan and Emori are MUCH more compelling.
Another thing that drags the episode down (and the season, if I’m being honest)? The whole “Sheidheda” making Madi a murder princess. I absolutely cannot fathom WHY grounder culture is still a thing on this show. They are on another planet, over a century later, with a thousand better things to focus on. I understand that Madi’s nightblood is significant, and the flame might be as well (from a technology standpoint). But why introduce this “dark commander”? if they wanted Madi to go full assassin, the pain of losing Clarke would have been enough to justify it. Also, what point does Madi/Sheidheda being so threatening towards Gaia serve? Having to listen to anything about the commanders is honestly exhausting, and it’s holding the show back. They’ve moved on (literally) in almost every capacity, and the show’s tendency to beat a dead horse only ever backfires.
Not to sound too harsh, but that feeling I get whenever someone calls Madi “heda” is the same feeling I get if I’m at a party and this one person can only talk about how great high school was. This again? We’re in our late twenties. High school wasn’t great. Please, let it go.
With that being said, they are setting up the next episode in a way that makes me think they might take the flame out of Madi for good, so we’ll see how that goes.
Now, there are some compelling pieces here: it was nice to see Raven go back to being sciencey and a little bit philosophical after almost a full season of nothing but self-righteousness. Her conversation with Murphy about morality, not immortality, as a way to avoid hell was well done. The 100 loves a good morality conversation, and with things getting more dire in Sanctum and the growing comparisons between the Primes and Arkadians I’m sure that’s not the last we’ll hear of it.
Getting almost everyone in one place, setting the stage for getting the dark commander out of Madi’s head, and setting up one last ditch effort to appease the Primes was great. The pacing in this case was well done and well executed, despite the issues that I did have, and I know that the final showdown will be epic.
The hold that the Primes have over Sanctum is disintegrating, to put it mildly, and my guess is that a mass witch trial-esque execution isn’t exactly the way to put the populace at ease.
There’s even an internal rebellion being incited by Ryker, who tells Delilah’s parents and another man that their loved ones aren’t “one with the Primes,” that nothing is left of the original host when the Prime’s mind drive takes over, and they’ve been lied to for decades. I’m curious to see the reaction when everyone in Sanctum learns the truth.
The Primes are Dead. Long Live the Primes.
Here’s the thing about the Primes and the Arkadians — they’re so concerned with not being like each other that they conveniently ignore or justify what they’re doing. Russell is hellbent on not ending up like the Arkadians, but how, in any way, are the Primes better than the Arkadians? At their current positions, I’d say that the Primes are decidedly worse. Here’s the thing, though — they’ve had time. Josie said it herself — she wasn’t always like this. Give the Arkadians a few centuries, and who's to say they wouldn’t devolve into something similar?
The driving force for both groups has always been taking care of “their people.” What’s not usually discussed is that in order to put your people first you need to put other people last. Someone almost always suffers, it's just about prioritizing that suffering.
It circles back around to that question of trying to save humanity but never bothering to question if it even should be saved. Sure, the Primes can live forever. Should they?
Clarke even gets a glimpse of Josie’s morality, or the morality she used to have, as their minds start to disintegrate and Josie’s memories bleed into Clarke’s mind space. We see Josie in love with Gabriel, watching that memory fondly until she absolutely has to let it go. In another episode, Clarke already discovered that memory of Josie’s from that diner on Earth.
Finally, when Gabriel and Octavia find Bellamy and Clarke/Josie and Gabriel is about to take out her mind drive, almost all of her memories are gone. Eliza Taylor absolutely kills this whole scene, and I actually could have shed a tear for Josie when she speaks through Clarke, saying she can’t remember, but she’s sure she did terrible things.
Josie had morality. Josie lost it.
The entire run of the show has been exploring morality and what it means — no simple task, I know. I think, however, that Gabriel really embodied that when he let Josie die. He said it himself, he’s been in love with her for centuries. But he needs, everyone needs, the cycle to stop. Putting an end to using hosts is the only way to do it.
That’s Love, Bitches
I mean… come on. Come ON.
This scene was everything. Well acted, well written, well directed. I cried, you cried, everyone cried. Twitter imploded. I’ll go to my grave being adamant that Bellamy and Clarke’s relationship is THE best and most well done thing about the show. The entirety of the sixth season is built on Clarke being gone and Bellamy fighting for her to come back. Love, sacrifice, forgiveness — all are main tenets of The 100, and all are wrapped up in Bellamy and Clarke.
It’s crystal clear that they’re paralleling Gabriel and Josie with Bellamy and Clarke. Josie dies, Gabriel letting her go while saying that their time is over, only for Bellamy to immediately bring Clarke back? Josie and Gabriel’s time is over, and Bellamy and Clarke’s is starting. A literal new life.
They really threw every romantic trope at them this episode. Clarke’s heart stopping in front of Bellamy and him pleading for her to come back? Bellamy saying he needs her? The CPR? The remnants of Josie try to kill Clarke, and she only comes back when she hears Bellamy’s voice? The first thing she sees when she comes back is Bellamy’s face? Octavia’s smirk in the back? The audacity.
This scene was lead up to with a full six seasons of development — from the beginning they were the head and the heart. Gabriel said it, the heart needs the head to tell it to beat. Clarke, clinging to her mind space, only came back because Bellamy restarted her heart. He’s her literal heart, guys.
Bellamy has thought Clarke was dead three times now — the first was during Praimfaya, the second when he discovered Josie was inhabiting Clarke’s body. Both of those times he could only witness and not do anything, so you better believe he wasn’t going to let Clarke die if he had anything to say about it.
There is a clear stage for romantic Bellarke being set here, and anyone who says otherwise is not watching the same show. You don’t have to like it, but it’s happening.
Honestly, anything I could say about this has already been said. Just know that this episode killed me, and I’ll be watching the next one from the afterlife.
