the Terzo autism post ♾️

this is kind of an analysis post and kind of a headcanon post.

Terzo reads as autistic to me, especially during his first two concerts when he was speaking without a script and trying to figure things out.

Terzo has that "trying new things is scary and i need to feel like i'm getting a good grade at social interactions and everything has to be done correctly or i'm going to explode" flavor of autism.

Terzo says he studied the choreography for 'Prime Mover' so the audience would feel comfortable. he's trying to do what people expect, and he keeps checking if he's doing alright and asking the audience if they like what he's doing.

PAPA EMERITUS III: So, I know it might seem a little confusing –it's even a little confusing to me, sometimes– y'know, playing new songs for people who've never heard these songs. But I tell you what– we have a really good ending song that you will understand why it is an ending song when you hear it. But now it might seem a bit strange, huh? Terzo feels weird about performing new music because it's new and the audience doesn't know what to expect and neither does he. he keeps trying to assure the audience that it'll be okay. but i'm pretty sure he was the only person worried about it. he was about to release a new album, so it completely made sense that he would be performing new songs. he just hates not knowing what to expect, and it doesn't occur to him that not everyone thinks like him.

and then this clip... i think it speaks for itself, but let's talk about it anyway. (i included the audio because i really want people to hear him speaking here.)

like where do i even start with this. him thinking he needs to clarify he's not going to be rapping. the stuttering. the fact that he listens to what Secondo tells him so he knows what to expect. him saying "[...] if you had said no, that would have been... weird. So thank you for not being weird and weirding me out. I'm weird enough as it is."

he feels like a weirdo and he just wants things to be normal so bad. 😭

he also gets really irritated when people are incorrect / do things incorrectly. he has the literal / rigid thinking patterns characteristic of autistic people

he tells the audience it is objectively true that it is getting late.

then there's the whole bit where he wants people to clap along to the music but he hates it if people clap wrong or don't clap with the correct rhythm.

and the bit where he asks the audience to say "Meliora" and emphasizes the correct pronunciation versus the incorrect pronunciation.

Terzo strikes me as someone who is constantly trying to perform a very intentionally constructed social personality, not only as an entertainer but as a person. and while he's naturally charismatic and charming, it's actually quite difficult for him to perform this public personality because he's constantly concerned with getting a good grade in social interactions and things being done correctly.

and there are all the quotes about Terzo being a recluse who only interacts with others as much as is strictly necessary. this is definitely clinical depression, but i think his autism is also a factor.

he got comfortable once he settled into a routine and created a script that he could repeat, though. after that, he was really on autopilot during his concerts. which is also so so autistic of him <3

I've made a post about great lesser-known noirs, but it occurs to me that some of you might not be familiar with the classics, and might want to know where to start. This is a ridiculously short list- I have a million more to talk about- but here are some of the big stars of the genre.

The Maltese Falcon: Sam Spade, a clever but callous private detective, gets wrapped up in intrigue relating to an artifact that is functionally cursed. If he's an unscrupulous character, just wait until you meet everyone else. The whole damn cast is electrifying, lending charm and cruelty in equal measure.

The Big Sleep: Philip Marlowe, a kinder and more poetic detective for Humphrey Bogart to play than Spade, is called upon to deal with a wealthy, dysfunctional family, and it keeps on getting weirder from there. Is the sharp-tongued Vivian Sternwood the femme fatale she seems, or is she just another person trying to find the right thing to do in desperate circumstances? And will she and Marlowe keep their hands off each other until the plot has had its last twist?

Double Indemnity: Rich housewife Phyllis Dietrichson and sleazy insurance agent Walter Neff are, by their own admission, rotten people. It's only natural that they should plot a murder together, and that they should turn on each other the very second things go wrong. Every single domestic murder movie since 1944 has ripped this off.

Kiss Me Deadly: This is nominally an adaptation of a Mike Hammer story. Screenwriter Bezzerides hated Mike Hammer. As depicted here, he is one of the worst people in the world. Depending on the cut of the film you see, he may inadvertently cause the nuclear apocalypse. (For once, the theatrical cut is darker.)

Sweet Smell of Success: Cruel, all-powerful columnist JJ Hunsecker wants his sister's boyfriend out of the way (for reasons that are, um, ambiguous.) To accomplish this, he enlists the biggest weasel in New York, Sidney Falco, and the two completely deserve each other as they spend the rest of the movie trading elaborate insults. Popular on tumblr for its dialogue and chemistry between the leads.

Sunset Boulevard: Broke screenwriter Joe Gillis thinks he can con a has-been into hiring him as a script doctor, and that's the last free decision he ever gets to make. From then on, his life is in the hands of Norma Desmond, silent film starlet turned crazed recluse, terrifying yet intensely pitiable. This is as much gothic horror as noir.

Ace in the Hole: The story of a man trapped in a cave is turning out to be a big hit in the newspaper, and if the publicity will make a reporter's career, then what's the harm in delaying rescue just for a little while? This is as vicious as noir gets, but damn it, you've just got to see what happens next. (Watch Jacob Geller's video Fear of the Depths after this.)

Sorry Wrong Number: Of all the films on this list, this is the one that really scared me. In the days of switchboards, a rich hypocondriac woman is connected to the wrong phone line and overhears a murder being planned. It doesn't take her long to figure out she's the intended victim, and each call she makes or recieves makes the situation darker. But how can she escape her fate if she can't- or won't leave her bed?

The Asphalt Jungle: The heist movie. Maybe the only heist movie ever made. Every line is quotable. Every member of the team is an unforgettable personality. When things go wrong, they go horribly wrong. One minute you're laughing, and the next minute you think you'll never laugh again.

Gun Crazy: Laurie and Bart, two practiced sharpshooters, are perhaps the most perfect match in all of noir- and that's a bad thing. When one half of the duo gets a criminal idea in their head, the other can't say no. When the opportunity to ditch her man like a sap comes up, the femme fatale throws it away to be doomed at his side. He fell in love with her when she first aimed a gun at him. Quentin Tarantino kissed star Peggy Cummins's feet at a showing of the film, and I hope she kicked him in the head.

Laura: Everyone was in love with Laura Hunt, and somebody killed her- or did they? Did they get the right person? Is the cop on the case in love with a dead woman? Was her columnist mentor just her gay best friend, or was there something darker beneath that facade? And what would Laura think of all this? A big inspiration on Twin Peaks.

In a Lonely Place: Bogart isn't at all heroic here, as a screenwriter with a drinking habit and a violent temper. He's obviously a bad idea to date, but just how bad an idea? He's not the type of guy who'd kill a woman, is he? Bogart and Gloria Holden give perhaps their best performances here, and they'll wound your soul.

Touch of Evil: A Mexican cop (played, unfortunately, by Charlton Heston) finds out a nasty secret about the big hero cop Hank Quinlan: he's framed the culprit in most of his cases. Not because he's crooked, but because his intuition tells him they're guilty. Director Orson Welles as Quinlan is frightening, grotesque, and a little bit tragic in what some consider the last classic noir.

The Killers: The first twenty minutes or so are an adaptation of a Hemingway story, where out of town hitmen gun down a man so depressed he won't even bother to run from them. The rest of the film is an investigation into how he got that way. It had something to do with a radiant gangster's girl, and something to do with a few botched crimes. Sometimes a man can die before the bullets even touch him.

The Third Man: Everybody is lying about the whereabouts of an American expatriate named Harry when his friend comes looking. Did they do something to him? Or, more frightening still, is he the one who's been doing things to other people? Orson Welles is a more charming monster than he was in Touch of Evil; the light and shadows on his face cast him as a vampire, while his fingers sticking up through the sewer grate look like something terrifying emerging from the earth.

Here’s the first few paragraphs from my newest fic, A Phantom Indeed. The prompt is linked here, enjoy!

Pitch-dark water was the only thing shielding Danny. The city noise, explosions, and cries for his name were unheard. He couldn’t tell how deep the sea-to-ocean currents had pulled him in or for how long he’d been in it, but he felt too weak to care. The coldness of the water wrapped around him like a claw, holding him gently while dragging him down further and further into its depths. The air was getting trapped in his chest the longer he drifted, causing his throat to clench. The saltwater ate away at his wounds, creating a stinging sensation. But all Danny could do was slowly sink.

His eyes were barely open as he stared at a small, glowing, white crystal shard that clung to his neck with tiny strands of energy acting as a rope. It let out a soft hum akin to a fan that Danny could barely hear and feel through the ringing in his ears, almost lulling him to sleep. But, he kept them open despite the pull. His gaze left the crystal when a swirl of cold breath flew up his throat and sat in his closed mouth as the ocean’s depths started to stir at the corners of his vision. The darkness of the deep and the moonlight from the world above swished and swayed about, slowly forming a figure from both sides.

The Being’s growing form was giant. Danny could feel his eyes widen through the salt water-induced sting at the sight of it. As The Being continued to form arms, a torso, and a head with a halo-like silhouette, all Danny felt was awe. He had never felt smaller in his half-life. But that feeling began to be entirely overshadowed by wonder and a sense of oneness that he had only felt when staring at the night sky. That’s it, I must be completely dead, Danny thought.

Danny couldn’t see their entire body once The Being finished forming. Their head barely fit in his peripheral vision, but he could tell The Being was holding him up with their palms, stopping the current from dragging him down. Darkness cradled his aching body with a gentleness and care Danny never felt before. He melted into the contact like a sad dog, wanting what little strength he had to leave like a breath.

The Being’s moonlight mouth moved about, clearly addressing him, but Danny’s mind couldn’t pick up squat. Though he couldn’t hear The Being’s words, their expressions and energy spoke for them. The Being’s eyes, though bright, were soft when focused on him. Their mouth would shift from snarls and sneers, reminding Danny of when his friends would resume their vegan or meat eaters rant. But would change to a gentle smile when focused on him. When its face softened, all he could feel in waves was regret. The Being’s aura was the source. Danny squinted at them to see if he recognized The Being, but the silhouette wasn’t familiar.

Danny tilted his head, wondering why a stranger would feel regretful towards him before The Being paused and scrunched their face, “No- no- no, new waters will not suffice!” Said The Being, its voice bellowing about the water, startling Danny from his thoughts as some of the ringing stopped. But not enough to discern any characteristics in their sound. Danny felt like he was reading a book, but his mind stopped midway through a page. “You’ve been through more than enough. We can do better than that…”

Danny’s brain came to a screeching halt as The Being continued to think before their eyes grew impressively wide with realization. A moonlight smile stretched across their face with a gasp, “Perfection! Yes- yes- yes! A hundred years of yeses, my dear boy!” Said The Being. “I know just the place to take you where safety is assured.” Danny stared lazily at The Being, slowly blinking. The Being stared and blinked back earnestly before softening their gaze.

“There is a place far enough away that those dunces won’t even think to follow. Some of my people live there with a kind family who will protect you with Spark and limb,” they said. “My people regard these humans highly for their heroics, empathy, and knowledge. True heroes, like you.”

Danny leaned forward and squinted at The Being. He opened his mouth to ask where it planned to take him, letting the last bit of his breath out. His eyes shot open at the action. Danny sputtered to catch his breath again, his throat becoming tighter than a serpent's hold with each passing second. The Being flinched at the boy’s sudden flailing before their eyes changed from moonlight white to sunlight yellow. Streaks of glowing gold flowed down their body in streams, quickly reaching their palms and enveloping the boy in a light that faded away not even a moment later. Danny sucked in a breath in surprise, then paused before breathing out. He watched as bubbles floated upwards to the surface so far above. He looked at The Being again and tried to open his mouth to speak, but no words left him, just bubbles. His gaze was fixated. The Being smiled warmly at Danny as his eyelids closed at a snail’s pace.

“I can answer all your queries another time,” they said. “But you can at least breathe until you touch land.” Danny just kept staring at the bubbles.

“I wish you could stay awake a bit longer, but I can see that’s a losing battle,” they said softly, voice pinched and breaking as their eyes scanned his body further. “You didn’t deserve this. We shouldn’t have... Again, I’m…” The Being shook their head. “No matter. We should not dwell on the past. I’ll take it from here. We will meet again.” Danny lazily drew his gaze away and back to The Being. His eyes didn’t blink in unison in response. The Being then, ever so gently, even for their size, lowered their head until their forehead touched his. He didn’t flinch at the contact, even as a warm golden glow overtook his vision. The last words his mind could register before the ringing returned was, “Rest well, young Phantom.”

My favourite thing about Leia is how fucking soft she is.

Like she is a little lady. She speaks very gently. She cares so much. She’s protective and warm. She just smiles and looks so happy. With Luke. Like, only Luke.

In the movies, this is also the case, but it really is one of my favourite parts of the 2015 run of the comics. They’re like, Leia: “Luke is doing great” while Luke is in the background getting thrown through a wall.

Sana (I love Sana) says she’ll won’t take Leia to Nar Shaddaa (to Luke) for free and Leia immediately offers her credits. When Sana is like “nah, just give me Han” Leia immediately agrees, and like. It’s funny for a variety of reasons but my favourite one is that Leia is trading Han for the Chance of seeing Luke.

And like, the comics show Leia telling Luke that she supports him even though he has to leave and she is very sad about it. She’s super disappointed she doesn’t get to go on the long probably meant-to-be boring mission with him. She just wants to hang out with Luke and make sure he’s okay and try not to lose him in the first fifteen minutes (again) or fifteen minutes after finding him again (also again).

I mean, it isn’t just Leia, I fucking adore Chewbacca’s relationship with Luke because. “Who would be stupid enough to volunteer to go on a doomed rescue mission for Skywalker-“ and it’s Chewbacca, Chewbacca is stupid enough, Chewbacca has the ship idling in the hangar, Chewbacca has had a Luke Rescue Kit in the ship since Luke left a week ago, Chewbacca is so ready to go on a doomed, borderline suicidal rescue mission for Luke.

Chewbacca just beats up a bar full of people to get them to tell him where Luke is. Like, that’s amazing. It’s adorable. He makes C3PO come with him. A wonderful idea. Chewbacca eventually picks Luke up like Like is a big cat. My favourite panel of all time.

Chewbacca and Leia are both over there like “I’ve only had Luke for three and a half months and if anything happened to him, I would kill all of you to get enough blood to perform an ancient ritual to make him perfectly alright again and I would start with Han.”

Han, meanwhile, is over there like “rude. Understandable, but still. Super rude.”

And I just think how soft Leia is with Luke is really sweet and how soft Chewbacca is with Luke is really cute and how both of them are so sarcastic to Han for literally no reason other than that they Thrive with his annoyance-

It’s great. If nobody else gets the characters, the 2015 run comes the closest.
