not to sound like an annoying karen, but i honestly, truly feel that netflix has fucked up the kdrama genre for good.

just 10-ish years ago, there were kdramas that the big 3 korean channels (SBS, MBC, KBS) would broadcast and then there were kdramas that the main cable channels (jTBC and tvN) would broadcast. and between those groupings, you got everything. you got 16-20 episodes of dramas that had heartfelt writing, filmed with bright colors, filmed with concise plots, that most of the time, ended WELL. you got a GOOD ending that was complete. the works felt authentically south korean. yes, there were cheesy tropes and moments that made you cringe, but it felt so real. and you had SO many kdramas airing during the week! you couldn't keep track of just how many!

cut to netflix coming in and making it big with kdramas with squid game and some romantic works and then suddenly they (and disney+) are making these short kdramas, less than 10 episodes, with generic filters, generic plots, and poorly written scripts that are just mere shadows of what kdramas used to be. they end shitty 90% of the time. and worst of all, they feel like american shows. and no, i don't mean sex scenes or action scenes because hey, i love change there, but i mean the entire VIBES are just off. they're not the kdramas i fell in love with, the ones that felt so human. and thanks to these big, foreign companies coming in, the main broadcast channels have basically shut down 1/2 their timeslots, and so many dramas aren't even getting aired these days.

yes times change progress is great robots will probably replace us all in a few years blah blah, but it's really depressing to me personally since i have such fond memories of the utter joy of kdramas, especially from the golden era of 2008-2017. and while there are some that escape the netflix!americanized! curse, it's unfortunately the majority that remain nothing but commercial puppets, rather than authentic entertainment.

SEVENTEEN’s Minnie joins the cast of the upcoming variety show “Apartment 404”!

The idol singer will be starring alongside comedy legends Yoo Jae Suk and Yang Se Chan, as well as actress Oh Na Ra and actors Lee Jung Ha, and Cha Taehyun. Created by Jung Chul Min, other known as PD Jung, who has already been credited with the hit variety show “Sixth Sense”, the six entertainers will have to solve the mystery behind multiple curious events that occur in their new residence.

tvN’s upcoming “Apartment 404” will mark Minnie’s first ever fixed casting in a variety show made for television! In the past, selected episodes of the idol’s group own YouTube entertainment show “Going Seventeen”, have been aired on TV, gaining her and the rest of the members a lot of national attention, as well as praise.

“I watched the first ever Gose (short for “Going Seventeen”) episode on JTBC, back in 2021 and just couldn’t stop laughing,” PD Jung told the reporter. “I was so surprised how idols could be so effortlessly funny. All of them seemed so smart while reaching such a high level of comedy.”

When asked how the producers came to choose Minnie, Jung Chul Min explained, “It was almost by accident. We were in a meeting and just talking about other possible cast members. Of course, we all knew that we’d need relatable and funny characters that would be entertaining to watch.” After a lot of back and forth, Minnie’s name fell and the room started laughing. “Kim Minnie is a very well acclaimed name, not only within South Korea, but also internationally, so she seemed very out of reach.”

After all, SEVENTEEN have reached the achievements “fastest selling global album of the century”, “first artist to exceed 3 million copies sold in the first day of release in Hanteo’s history”, and “highest pre-orders for albums in history, with 4.6 million sales”.

“But Yoo Jae Suk convinced us to ask her.”

The comedy legend and Minnie had already met years ago during an episode of “Running Man”, where the idol singer had appeared as a guest star. They seemed to have grown closer and kept in touch even after the shoot.

“SEVENTEEN was still on tour and had just finished filming another variety show with Na PD, but she found time to meet up with us and agreed almost immediately,” PD Jung recalled. “She shared her personal schedule and we set up filming dates right away. It must’ve been so busy for her… I remember her telling us that she had just landed and came to set right from the airport. I really respect her dedication.”

Filming for the variety show started last year, already gaining a lot of Carats’ attention when a picture of the cast was posted on Social Media.

Twitter, Instagram, and Naver exploded with interested fans, who couldn’t believe their eyes.

SCHEDULE TYPE: ONE TIME GIG

this year, JTBC is lauching their variety in collaboration with legacy, LGC TEMP AGENCY. through this show, participants will get to try a variety of part-time jobs. each season will focus on a single industry. this season: ENTERTAINMENT. here are this season's part timers and what they will be doing:

• BAEK SEONA and CARTER JAEJIN: assistant cordi for a stylist. the part-timers will be assisting STYLENANDA's cordi during the photo shoot for their summer campaign. it will be their duty to unbox all the clothes, steam them and prepare all the outfits as instructed by the cordi. be careful not to lose or break any accessories! the part-timers will only help during the morning, during which they'll have to process around 75 outfits.

• CHEN MAYLIN and KIM SEYOON: INKIGAYO's cafeteria part-timers. years ago, INKIGAYO's eating area became famous for its sandwiches. those might not exist anymore, but the cafeteria is still there! from 9AM to 3PM the duo will be in charge of it. make sure to fulfill everyone's coffee orders properly, keep the shelves stocked and the area clean (most of the food are what you'll find at a korean convenience store)

• MOON HAYOUNG and KANG YOOJOON: assistants managers to the rookie group 'RIIZE' who are currently promoting their new song 'HUG'. fans always look forward to fanmeetings during their favorite's promotion period. the part timers will be in charge of setting up a gymnasium for such an event. 200 lucky fans are expected to attend. not only will the part timers have to set up the space, they will also need to decorate the room, come up with fun games for the boys to play and lastly, get all the fans seated. their day will end once the fanmeeting will have safely begun.

• MOON JINO and KUROSAWA AKIO: assistant managers to newly debuted group 'KICK FLIP'. they will be tasked with waking the members up at 4AM and having them are fed and dressed by 5:30AM. the manager will then drive them all to the salon for the boys to get their hair and makeup done. the assistants of the day will be in charge of any food/beverage orders and ensuring that everybody is ready and accounted for by 7AM. finally, their day will end after safely dropping all the members at SBS headquarters.

• PARK SEOJIN and SEO MINSEO: assistants for a CF agency. the part-timers will be assisting the photographer and director during a photoshoot with DOGS. it'll be their task to keep the three dogs happy, at the right spot, and properly distracted for the money shot to be captured

• PARK TAEHA and CHOI JUNKYU: assistant directors for a stage play. as it turns out, there's a lot of assembling and decorating to do! unfortunately, all the furniture for the bedroom area are from IKEA and the new part-timers (taeha and junkyu) have been volunteered to assemble the bed, desk and chair! good luck !

• SEO NINA and XUE YICHEN: assistant pds for a variety producer. when it comes to variety shows, producers must always test the difficulty of the games and challenges artists are going to have to do. the part-timers will be the ones in charge of… quality control of the games a mid-size agency idol group will have to do for their variety! (games tests are up to you, however, they should be games that can be done in pairs)

• YAMASHITA ICHIKA and OH EUNHYE: assistant teacher. a company is preparing to debut a new girlgroup. prior to their debut (and even after) idols have to take several classes. the 'manners teacher is requesting part-timers to teach his charges industry tips, know-hows and junior-senior interactions. the pair will be tasked to come up with the content of the lesson and prepare an interactive presentation.

Reminder that Seungri is a sex offender. Convicted and registered.

As some of you may be aware, Seungri was recently released from prison after serving a criminally short sentence of just 18 months for the commission of 9 crimes ranging from economic (financial) crimes, crimes of violence, and sex crimes.

That's right. Sex crimes.

In his sentencing hearing in August 2021, at the conclusion of the first trial in the Lower Military Court, just before he was whisked away to prison, the judge explained to Seungri that he would be subject to "registration of personal information related to sex crimes." See below:

This was not widely reported, or even given much attention, with most of the media's focus being on the 3-year prison term and accompanying fine related to gambling. (Surprisingly, it did make it into Soompi's coverage, but I've reached my image limit on this post so here's a link to the report instead.)

Side note: as expected, his stans did not discuss this openly (or at all), and even their big "trusted translator" accounts either glossed over it or omitted it from their translations altogether, so many of his international supporters were unaware.

In the second trial with the High Court (first appeal), in which Seungri pleaded guilty to all charges (except for habitual gambling which he appealed again, hoping to lower it to "occasional" gambling, a lesser charge... he was unsuccessful with that, by the way), the court granted him leniency, cutting his prison term in half and forgiving the nearly $1 million fine. A generous reduction in punishment simply for saying, "I'm guilty, I'm sorry, go easy on me."

At the time, I couldn't find any information on whether or not the registration requirement for sex crimes remained in place. Even after the Supreme Court finalized everything in May of last year, there seemed to be no mention of it.

Now, however, days after his release from prison and return to society, we finally have confirmation:

In short, Seungri is a registered sex offender required by law to submit (and keep current) his personal information to the authorities. He must also return each year to the local police station having jurisdiction over his home address and have updated mugshots photos taken -- once a year, every year, for the next 15 years. To put this into perspective, they'll be keeping tabs on him until he's in his late 40s.

So, yes, his information is registered. However, at the judge's discretion he was exempted from disclosure. This means his personal information (such as home address) will not be available, i.e., publicly searchable, on South Korea's online sex offender registry. Police will have access to this info. The public will not.

What was his violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes? Well, we knew he had been charged with distributing some form of illegally filmed sexual material, also known as hidden camera footage or molka. It was described as being a photo of women, in bed, naked -- and, importantly, photographed from behind, which raises the question of consent.

Seungri admitted in 2019 to sharing something in a group chatroom, as there was chat evidence of this that could not be disputed. However, he challenged the notion that he'd taken the photo himself, claiming he'd received it from someone else. He later took it a step further and disputed the nature of the photo altogether by trying to pass it off as a "business advertisement" sent to him in a "spam text message" from an employee of an adult entertainment business. For publicity purposes.

The court rejected his excuse explanation for the photo and deemed him guilty of distributing illegally filmed footage. But as for who took the photo, whether it was Seungri or someone else, the court's decision didn't seem especially clear to me... until now, thanks to JTBC recently reporting details from the ruling:

The KKT chat log, made public in 2019, did not support Seungri's claim. The testimony of other members of the chat, when questioned in court about the photo they received from Seungri, did not support it either.

So much for his fans' stubborn insistence that he "wasn't in the molka chats." Thanks to the chat evidence, court docs from Jung Joonyoung's ruling, and Seungri's own admission in an interview with Chosun Ilbo, we've known for years that Seungri not only knew about his friends' molka habits but received such things from them directly and even reacted to them with amusement (laughter). Now, with the detailed results of Seungri's court proceedings before us, we can be certain that he took part in the practice too.

[Exclusive] 'Yoo Jaeseok's Pick' Young K joins judges panelist for JTBC's new female vocal audition program 'Girls on Fire'

Young K of boy band DAY6 (DAY6) will appear as a judge for JTBC's new audition program "Girls on Fire." According to Star News coverage on the 15th, Young K will join 'Girls on Fire' as a judge. ‘Girls on Fire’ is an audition program that depicts the process of forming a female vocal group that will propose ‘new K-pop’. Just like the program name, which means 'passionate and cool women,' it represents so-called 'women who know how to have fun' who enjoy the stage. This is the 3rd part of the ‘Hidden Musician Discovery Project’ by the ‘Phantom Singer’ and ‘Super Band’ production team. Broadcaster Jang Do Yeon will serve as MC, and singer Jung Sun Ah along with Young K will serve as judges and help create a female vocal group.
