Step 1 of 「伝える力」 が伸びる! 12歳までに知っておきたい語彙力図鑑 focuses on teaching you synonyms for words you would typically use to describe your emotions. There are synonyms for words like やばい, エモい, and the like. This particular post will focus on the information that they've given about やばい。

The book also ranks the words' difficulty level, with 1 star being an "of course you know this" to 5 stars being "even adults probably don't know this and you're about to blow them away with your vocabulary and make them pull out their dictionary." Because of this, you may see words that you encountered quickly as a Japanese learner (that a native speaker 12 year old may not have encountered yet) and vice versa on the list below.

やばい

Because やばい is a word that can be used to express nearly any emotion (much like how OMG can be used in many contexts in American English), the book did also make sure to put the contexts in which the alternative word would be appropriate.

危うい (あやうい)- dangerous; in danger; facing imminent danger ❖This is to be used when dangerous situations are imminent. The way they described it was "危険が迫っている状態" ▶︎Their example: 危うい所でピンチを脱出した。

危険 (きけん)- dangerous; risky; uncertain; precarious; in danger ❖This is to be used when a situation may lead to not-so-good/dangerous outcomes. ▶︎Their example: そんなに高い所からジャンプしたら、危険だよ。

驚異的 (きょういてき)- wonderful; astounding; marvelous ❖This is to be used when something passes a level of surprise that you can express. ▶︎Their example: 大谷選手の達成した記録は驚異的だ。

最高 (さいこう)- best; supreme; wonderful; highest; maximum; supreme ❖This is to be used when describing something of the highest status/dignity/ranking. (This is relative in comparison to other things.) ▶︎Their example: 夏休みに友達と見に行った映画��、最高に面白かった。

素晴らしい (すばらしい)- wonderful; splendid; magnificent ❖ This is used to describe something that's elegant/praiseworthy/splendid, things that are desirable, and things that admirable. ▶︎Their example: 富士山の山頂から眺める景色は、息をのむほどに素晴らしい。

Yojijukugo (四字熟語)

This section also includes four-character compound idioms (yojijukugo) that can be associated with the word we're focusing on expanding our vocabulary from.

絶体絶命 (ぜったいぜつめい)- desperate situation with no escape; being driven into a corner; being cornered; last extremity ❖ You would use this when you find yourself in a situation that there's no conceivable way you could think of making it out in the way that you truly desire. ▶︎Apparently you can use it in phrases like this 「絶体絶命のピンチ」 BONUS: I found an example online that also uses it to mean "stalemate" and the example is a cop and a suspect both pointing a gun at each other.

最上無二 (さいじょうむに)- there is nothing else like it in this world; it's an unparalleled marvel ❖They listed this one at 5 stars (aka, the adults are gonna be surprised that you know this and also go look it up) and I can certainly see why--I couldn't find any official English translations of it. Here's the definition the book gave: この世に二つとなく、最もすばらしいこと。「最上」は最もすぐれていること、「無二」は同じ物がないことを意味するよ。

SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME IF MY UNDERSTANDING OF THIS LAST YOJIJUKUGO IS INCORRECT SO THAT I CAN LEARN IT PROPERLY!! I BESEECH THEE!! I IMPLORE YOU!!

Language Learning Log 2023 Week 23 (05/06 - 11/06)

I'm really trying to step up the JLPT prep now, doing as many practice tests as I can get my hands on and working with my N4 grammar/reading textbook. I wanted to take N4 because I wanted to push myself and knew I'd only stand a chance of passing if I studied hard... and then proceeded to barely study 😅 Well, it's my own silly fault if I don't pass. But now the exam is less than a month away The Fear is starting to set in, and honestly that's what I need to get my arse in gear.

I had a Norwegian italki lesson last night and it took me a good 5 minutes to be able to even speak Norwegian at all. I guess because I'm now so used to defaulting to Japanese as my "not English" language, my brain took a moment to remember there is another "not English" language too. But after that it was largely fine. I've forgotten some words for sure, but I can still have a comfortable conversation and say more or less what I want to say.

I feel like I'm getting more confident speaking Japanese. I still have a long way to go and I definitely need to make some notes I can refer to when speaking, but I know I've made progress compared to how I was when I arrived.

I also tried to read some more of Spy x Family this weekend. It was slow-going 😅 But I also recognised some words/grammar I'd recently learned, so that's nice. Hopefully every time I read it I'll understand more and more. I'm keeping notes of topic-specific vocabulary (like mission, agent, operation, minister etc) to review each time before I start reading so that I don't waste time looking them up (because they're not words I come across very often in daily life). If I read fairly regularly, hopefully that vocab will sink in and eventually I won't have to review those words at all.

Up early to start the last day of the work week.

I’m still feeling a bit of the January Blues, even though we’re almost halfway into February. However, that means we’re inching closer tp March, and to longer days with warmth, sunshine, and more light in general.

I’m thinking today will be a massive study day: I’ve put myself up to the task of reviewing 100 Kanji, which I should be done with by Class 6 today, leaving after school -the 85 minutes before my work day is officially done, and I can walk down to Ito Yokado for the last box of chocolate for my male coworkers on 2/14- to really get myself back into studying a little daily.

At the beginning of the month, I had 151 days to prep for the JLPT N4, but then the chest cold and sinus combo from the seventh level of hell attacked, reducing me down to 141. That’s still a lot of days to prep for a test that I know I can pass: I already know about 45% (let me check that number when I make a study post later!) of the kanji, and a lot of the vocab. While it won’t be a breeze like N5 would be -I’d probably spend half the time I am for that- it’ll be easy if I work hard.

Also, I was gonna make a separate sideblog for my studying, but honestly, I think it’d be easier to just do a study tag on here since this is basically a journal about my entire experience in Japan.

Please continue to support my efforts as I double down and get ready for the test July 2, 2017. I’ve got 140 days to make some magic happen and really see some results: coupled with my new studies into JSL -Japanese Sign Language; I can only laugh in it currently after a day of study, and do some simple signs- I think I should really see my language skills go up this year, and see that I am very capable of communication in different languages.

Anyways, I’ve got to get up and get dressed: lunch -and dinner- will be conbini purchases today, especially since I didn’t get a substantial amount of meat on 2/9, which can be read like the Japanese word for meat, “肉” (niku). Plus, work calls soon, so I’ll see y’all around this afternoon when I’m studying!

Why are we here?

Welcome to my New Year’s Resolution blog! My goal for 2021 is to prep for and take the N4 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in December 2021. This NYR is my same one from last year, but 2020 was filled with several challenges for me (finishing grad school, starting a new job, COVID-19, moving to a new apartment, etc.) so the JLPT N4 goal was put on the back-burner. I realized that due to my personal struggles during 2020, I’m having my quarter-life crisis about a year late, and this NYR is my way of taking my life back into my own hands.

From my past experience with the N5 exam, the test is usually held in the first Saturday in December. The first Saturday in December 2021 is 12/4/21. If I start studying on 1/1/21, that gives me 338 days until the N4 test. I will be using the Nihongo Challenge for JLPT N4 series of textbooks for the first part of my study. There are three textbooks in total: Grammar and Reading Practice, Vocabulary, and Kanji. The second part of my study will be using the TRY! JLPT N4 textbook to review concepts that were (hopefully) introduced in the first part of my study.

So: 338 days (1/1/21-12/4/21) is the total number of days available = 48.2 weeks

- 1st part of study (Nihongo Challenge textbooks) = completed by 6/28/21

- 2nd part of study (TRY! JLPT N4 textbook) = start 6/29/21, completed by 11/30/2021

- 12/1/21-12/3/21 = taking practice tests and traveling to the testing location

On top of using the textbooks, I will also be creating flashcards and using kanji and writing notebooks for documenting and studying. My goal is to use this blog to document my progress weekly. I will also be reblogging Japanese study tools that I find interesting as I work towards my goal.

Study for the JLPT N4 Online before you take the exam this december!

So I took Japanese Language and Proficiency Test N2 this weekend, here’s my thoughts

I remember wanting to scream after the reading comprehension

No seriously, I was ready to give up after the reading section

LUCKILY the listening section restored my confidence

FYI JLPT is divided into 5 levels which are something like this:

N5 - Beginner

N4 - Intermediate

N3 - Upper intermediate

N2 - Advanced (This is the one you need if you want a job in a Japanese company)

N1 - Fluency

The answers were posted online today on a Chinese website so naturally I got curious to check it out, since I remember most of my answers.

JLPT N2 is scored like this - there are 3 sections: language knowledge (vocab and grammar), reading comprehension, and listening comprehension. You need at least 19 points in each section to pass the test. 

For example, even if you got a perfect score in 2/3 sections, if you only got 18 points in the last section - you fail. Harsh but also...only 19 points?

Language Knowledge: According to the leaked answers, I passed this section. I imagined grammar would be my weakest subject but the grammar points that came up were fairly easy in comparison to what I’m used to from the N2 grammar books.

I felt bad for slacking off on grammar the days for the test but it would honestly not have made much difference if I studied an extra 2-3 days.

Advice for N2 grammar: You will NEED a textbook of some sort. One of the most highly regarded is the Shinkanzen Master series because it’s just as difficult if not moreso than the real exam. Some of the grammar prep books are way too easy - you NEED the difficult level to prepare you. N2 is NOT an easy test.

Reading: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! I HAVE NO IDEA!! I stupidly spent time rechecking my answers for the grammar and vocab section that I lost time here! And my mechanical pencil broke during this section, so I had to write with literally just a piece of lead!! This section will be my downfall! If I fail it’s because of this section!!!

This is the section where it hit me - so this is N2 level. I may be able to read light novels and magazine articles - but this section showed me I NEED to improve my reading comprehension all around.

Advice for N2 reading: READ!!!! ;w;

Listening: ...I live in Japan if I did badly here it would be a disgrace okay

Also I spent the 3 days before the exam listening to an audio book so... In comparison this was a walk in the park. 

If you listen to native Japanese - TV shows, conversation, audio books, anime, drama CDs... this section will come EASY to you. I just... this was not difficult at all...

Other notes: I am SO glad I did practice tests beforehand so I knew what was coming.

I won’t get my results until January. I hope I passed... I know I have a LONG way to go with Japanese still but it would be really nice to pass ;;

academic and personal goals for the year, also plans for the future and uni in general?

i was going to do a first ib finals report bUT i figured i’d wait until i receive all my scores + sem 1 report..... so far my grades are v nice but whenever someone mentions uni i’m left in a state of ~utter confusion~

p.s. my studyblr is going to be in semi-hiatus mode? because keeping up with actual schoolwork is more important than studyblr-ing lets be real (add in cas, ia + ee proposals, ah the beauty of being in ib....). it’ll also be less reblogs and more personal quality posts. feel free to unfollow me if you’re just looking for aesthetic reblogs ahh the sole purpose of this thing is to document my academic journey, maybe, somehow (?)

p.p.s. studying japanese intensively for this year so my blog is now a mix of studyblr + japanese langblr ;; and in the next few months, i feel like it’ll be an appblr as well.... :’)))

this might change in the future but yes....,, my heart is dead set on the monbugakusho scholarship ;_; it’s highly coveted, and out of thousands of applicants each year, less than a hundred is chosen. HOWEVER it covers full tuition fees, living costs, monthly allowance.... cherry on top is that you can go anywhere in Japan. fully funded.

studying in japan is a lifelong goal for me. however the requirements to just get pass the screening of this scholarship is either pass national exams with an average of 8.4 - THIS IS WHERE I GET FUCKIN scared because i’m already used to ib-style questions. aka. what are multiple choices!!!1! and how do i do a math paper without a calculator!!1! what science exam should i take bc i’m doing ess!!!

on top of that... the added stress of doing national exams AND ib exams simultaneously. life is looking Good /laughs dryly/

going back to the ‘either’ - if in case i fail (oh God no BUT) national exams or decide to not take it, i can submit a JLPT N3 certificate (pass obvi). THIS is my way to go because hey,, i’ve been studying japanese for 2~3 years now,, and getting the jlpt would be an edge when applying and living in japan later on!! however.... HOWEVER....

my school would usually make national exams prep classes compulsory AND even if i decide to not take it, i’ll still study, so...

national exams are FREE tbh if i have studied (such as the case above) might as well go for it...

JLPT is paid. the exams are only run twice a year. NO WAY I CAN FUCKIN GO FOR N3 RIGHT IN JULY, so december would be my way go. i’d already be in ib2 right then, drowning in apps and coursework... dec 2017 is my only chance.....

jlpt n3 in ~10 months is actually pretty realistic but then i have to intensively study ;__;

Did a little tutor sheet work, at the end of my study tonight, just reading through it at a natural pace, which was nice since I haven’t really done that with this sheet yet! So nice speaking practice and can feel lots of the vocab sinking into my head, as well as the grammar whilst reading it at a natural pace, so yeah as I always say, keep in mind the power of just reading stuff normally! Not that I don’t, but yeah. Anyway, enough rambling on that.

スターバをあまり利用しません。私にとって、イギリスで普通な日では全然カフェに行きません。むしろ、家や仕事ではドリップコーヒーを作っていますが、東京にいる時は、よくカフェに行きますけど、東京にはいいカフェが多いですから、あまりスタバに行きません。実際、大きいチェーンストアのカフェについては、スターバよりタリーズはもっといいと思います。欧米に比べて日本ではドリップコーヒーはもっと人気です。ドリップコーヒーは一番好きですから、日本には沢山いいコーヒーがありますね。お得術と言えば、秘密がないと思います。いつもブラックドリップコーヒーを飲みますから。でも、東京での知る人ぞ知るのカフェを紹介しえます。いいコーヒーを飲むのために、一番好きなカフェは、原宿ではドリフトコーヒーという友達の店です。ハワイ的な服屋にあります。東京で一番いいコーヒーです。手元、visvimという服ブランドの旗艦店にあるコーヒーもあります。それもとてもいいドリップコーヒーです。中目黒ではHuitというカフェはいいコーヒーとお菓子があります。

For the majority of study today however I worked finally with the JLPT textbooks, actually today just working through the majority of the N4 textbook to check everything there, definitely only a few things that are any concern to me, such as passive form etc. but still was good to look into a few things that I had kinda forgot you know? So yeah, good to look through all that and remind myself of different ways to say a few things and just check up on all of it. I plan to do some more work continue on with the end exercises in the N3 textbook soon as well.

Tomorrow again I don’t have a tutor lesson, so another regular weekday of study which is cool. I will do a ‘last look’ so to speak work with the tutor sheet in prep for my lesson on Saturday night, maybe also jump back into N3 textbook and work from there, we shall see.

So I’m going to make another folder, this time focused in study, for all the ALTs and folxs out there trying to make an N4 out of a your language skills. It’s in my google drive and will contain all the materials I’m personally using to prep for the JLPT’s N4 Level.

I made these considering the following:

I have the equivalent of two years of Japanese study even though I’ve only been learning for one year

I was able to dedicate three months to Japanese for at least six hours a day on week days -30 hours total- and three hours on Saturdays for a weekly total of 33 hours speaking, reading, and writing in my target language

I speak at an intermediate level

I am living in Japan and benefit from cultural immersion and language immersion on a daily basis

That gives me a really solid advantage: I see, hear, speak, and listen to Japanese daily, and while learning and comprehending are not always tied, I am doing a great deal of both, more than someone in the states could do, for example. 

However, I’m a big believe in can-do, and I hope that with these materials, you can also do what you want and achieve your language goals. I think that these files and materials will be accessible to any one who wants to achieve an N4 level of Japanese, whether or not in the country.

This year, I will be taking the Summer Test on July 2, 2017. From today, I have 141 to prepare: a little over under five months to prepare. It’s a really good, long time, and if I’m smart, will be fruitful and get me the 90 out of 180 minimum I need to pass N4 and start on my N3 studies for December 2018.

I should also add that they’re all in English and Japanese: there is no romanji because romanji does not help you in Japan, and is not good for learning written Japanese.

It just doesn’t: 99.99% of the time, when I’m reading something in Japan, it either has the name written in English, or it’s in hiragana, katakana, and kanji. I honestly don’t know any time I’ve seen romanji here in Fukushima City. I’ve received a few text messages with it, but it can be cryptic if you don’t know the meaning of words with the same pronunciation. It’s hard, yes, but necessary at the beginning, otherwise down the line, you will regret it. Romanji won’t allow you read anything in Japanese –from children’s books to newspapers to dictionaries-

(Example: if you were to write tsukeru, you could mean a lot of different things: turning on a light, furnishing a house, putting something on, shadowing someone, joining something together… you get the point. There’s 12 different tsukeru and it’s easy to confuse in romanji, and even in hiraga. Being able to use the hiragana, and better, the kanji, help distinguish your meaning in writing and avoid language confusion. The romanji only increases possible chances for misunderstanding, misreading, and frustration on your end. Plus, no one will ever translate everything into romanji for you if you say you speak Japanese: understanding hiragana and katakana are expected of you.)

Romanji also doesn’t help because Romanization can be very different: ji and zi are the same hiragana –じ– but might not make sense if you learned zi and not ji. I encountered this problem with a textbook I used in grad school: it meant I had to spend time writing everything out properly in order to memorize because in Japan, especially out of big cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, Senda, and Fukuoka, you’re not going to encounter it, and if you somehow end up in the countryside, you can throw it completely out the window. Break your habit early, or now: it’s essential if you want to really learn the written language.

(Honestly, Tofugu gives a better explanation for why it’s bad for you than I felt I did. Point is: get rid of the training wheels as soon as you can push for hiragana and katakana memorization and comprehension. That’s what’s on the JLPT, and if you want to read, what you’ll 100% of the time be faced with, even if it’s just furigana above or next to pages of kanji.)

I hope the materials and resources I’m making for myself can benefit you too. Testing is hard, language learning is harder, but with practice, study, and help, anyone can succeed. Study on friends: we’re all in this together.
