All best wishes to you! And a question: Do you know if Lannes stayed in contact with people he got to know during his time as envoy in Portugal once he had returned to France? People like (de) Fitte de Soucy, for example? How did he feel about these mere civilians?
Also, I have it in my head that I once read (but where?) about Lannes being in contact with a French emigré in Portugal about having this émigré's son return to France? Can that be?
Once Jean-Boy returned from his Portuguese sojourn, he generally divested himself from his "diplomatic associates." Not, I think, because he looked down on them but because he had literally no time between the Marshals' Ball and the distribution of the Eagles and assuming command of V Corps on the coast. I looked at the V Corps situation reports and other documents to see if the long-serving and eminently patient de Fitte de Soucy popped up as a staff officer but he didn't. Thank God he was Jean-Boy's secretary in Lisbon or I would not have been able to read all that neat stuff. As far as any dealing with a French emigre in Portugal, I have no clue. My first reaction would be to say "not no, but hell no!" given Jean-Boy's opinion of emigres. But then he could--and did--always surprise me by doing the opposite of what I thought he'd do. If you find out, let me know.

French voisine!Jean who lives right next door. You see him daily with his paint-stained jeans and white shirts, sleeves rolled up to display his lovely tattoos. He's always so kind, so generous even when you make mistakes speaking french with him. He suggests that he gives you some private french lessons. Well, turns out what he meant by "pratiquer" was far from what you were expecting.
He holds your wrists just above your head, thrusting in as brutal as he can, complete opposite of his appearance. He whispers "bonne fille" when you scream "Juste là!" instead of "Right there!" He kisses your temples, rubbing circles on your aching clit.
"Et maintenant, tu dis je viens Jean quand tu es proche, okay, chérie?"
@maries-gallery j'sais tu n'écris plus pour AOT mais, well, this goes to you <3

I nearly stood on my head to avoid "idealizing" Jean-Boy at any point, mostly because there were few historical opportunities to do so. And I was damn sure to mention those incidents where his actions, especially in his early military career, were questionable at best, reprehensible at worst.
I drew the line at castigating Jean-Boy for killing monks, nuns, and civilians at Zaragoza. When a monk with his robe, crucifix, sandals, and tonsure comes at you with a loaded musket and bayonet attached, you shoot him without the slightest regard for his clerical status. The same is true for armed nuns and civilians. There is, however, a price to be paid for this, no matter the justification, and Jean-Boy certainly paid it. But concerning the Spanish guerrillas, don't forget that while Goya skillfully depicted the horrors of war in such a visceral fashion, there were no artists who showed exactly what the guerrillas did to the French soldiers they captured.
I try not to idealize even my favorite historical figures. Especially if these figures are military men.
Tumblr media
Ney punished the Spanish guerrillas very cruelly during the Peninsular Wars, and this cannot be denied. So I wanted to draw this.
This does not mean that I do not like the historical figure I have chosen. Ney is a very important person for me, who has seriously influenced my life, but I try not to idealize him.

The most "accurate" version would be of both of them alone at 5:45 a.m. on May 31: Jean alone in that dreadful little attic room, Napoleon eating a hasty breakfast alone. That's always been a far more tragic situation than the usual scenes of the emperor mourning the [imminent] loss of his close friend. I've written about this over decades and managed to do it with a deceptively calm demeanor, but I'm not sure I could handle the visual representation.
Today is the 215th anniversary of Jean Lannes's death.
Tumblr media
I used the painting 'Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan' as reference in order to depict the pain Napoleon felt after losing his close friend.
This is NOT an accurate depiction of Lannes's death, I went down a more artistic/sorrowful route for this artwork. There will be a time where I do make an accurate version, but for now this is how I wanted to depict such a tragic moment.

hello! I hope you feel better, have a virtual hug🫂!! Question for lannes: (I think) I heard somewhere he favors nuns or is protective of them? Is there an actual instance of that or a reason why?
Just another aspect of Jean-Boy's personality that is often difficult to reconcile: How does an anti-clerical former Jacobin whose older brother was a priest and responsible for what little education he had manage to earn the reputation as a protector of hapless nuns? I've always thought that Jean-Boy's protective, sentimental, and basically caring personality traits were generally immutable but didn't preclude his more abrasive, uncouth, prideful, and downright scary characteristics. He could threaten to run someone through with his sword and pivot almost immediately to rescue someone, usually small and female, from danger. With regard to nuns, the first notable incident occurred during the capture of Malta in June 1798, when Jean-Boy and a few of his soldiers had slipped ashore despite Bonaparte's orders. They were indulging in some sightseeing when a Maltese told them some nasty French soldiers were looting a nearby convent. Jean-Boy and his buddies chased them off and agreed to remain and protect the sisters and their property until reinforcements arrived. The bad guys returned before the reinforcements and Jean-Boy dealt harshly with them in the Mother Superior's parlor. The bad guys were apprehended, and the ringleader shot on Bonaparte's orders. But the nuns were exceedingly grateful for their protector who, we hope, managed to curtail his usual profanity. The second incident in May 1809 involved a convent on the Danube near St. Polten, where the nuns appealed to Jean-Boy and his staff who stopped at the convent for water; they complained that their countrymen, the Austrians, had been looting their storehouses, their chickens, and other possessions they used for the poor who depended on them. So Jean-Boy said he'd leave a contingent of soldiers--I believe they were grenadiers--at the convent to ward off any predator, regardless of nationality. The part of this story that breaks my heart is when the Mother Superior took a few moments before Jean-Boy and his troops rode off toward Vienna and blessed him; I can easily see the agnostic kneeling in the dirt in front of her, her hand on his head. I wonder if she knew what would happen.
