(this is following on from my The Valley of Fear posts earlier. I probably should have posted this yesterday since it's primarily about a female character but I didn't think about this again until today so never mind).

Ivy Douglas. Listen, she is great and I love her and she is such an underused character who's barely been portrayed in anything ever and that really sucks, and she unlike various other female canonical characters barely gets acknowledged in the fandom even, and that also really sucks. I have actually talked about her in my Moriarty and Moran essay because she is kind of linked to them and I think she's such an intriguing character and it's such a shame Valley is such an underused story that has barely been adapted ever because Ivy Douglas deceives both Holmes and Watson, i.e. the 'great detective' and the guy who supposedly has all this worldly experience of women. For a while they're practically doing the polite Victorian equivalent of calling her a Heartless Bitch who either doesn't care her husband is dead or actually murdered him herself probably because she's screwing another man. But she does deceive them and also she loves her husband! She has not betrayed him! And she also seems to know and accept he also still loves his first (deceased) wife, and that (deceased) wife, Ettie, is the one who gets to be a bigger character in the overall story and does overshadow Ivy, and John Douglas is even still wearing his wedding ring from his marriage to Ettie but all of that's completely all right with Ivy! Instead of being this Heartless Bitch who wants her husband dead or being petty and jealous over him still loving his first wife so much she genuinely loves him and wants to save him.

Also it's not because of Ivy that the truth is revealed, it's Cecil Barker who gives a lot of it away. So why could she not have deceived Holmes and Watson again and been partly responsibly for successfully saving her husband? And she wouldn't even need to lie much this time unless Holmes went and followed it up and talked to her face to face sometime because all she does this time is send a telegram saying "Jack has been lost overboard in gale off St. Helena. No one knows how accident occurred."

She doesn't say he's dead or even believed dead. She could well be deceiving them again while actually stating almost the complete truth if Jack/John Douglas has faked his death again. He has disappeared overboard because he never got back onto that particular ship again (but he could have been picked up by another boat); 'Jack' has been lost because he'd change to a different name again. The only part where she would have to lie is to say no one knows how it occurred but even then it would only be a tiny handful of people who did know the truth.

Meanwhile it bothers me that in the story Holmes exposes the truth about John Douglas and then seems to put no real effort in trying to help him. Sure you can argue that he did so off the record but he doesn't do it in the text, all he does in the text is write a letter to Ivy saying "Get him out of England at any cost. There are forces here which may be more dangerous than those he has escaped. There is no safety for your husband in England" and then appears to just consider that enough. He just seemed to leave them to it after throwing them into the shit, so to speak. I don't think Moriarty's 'taunting' note to Holmes is really a threat, I think he is both mocking and admonishing Holmes for putting John Douglas in danger again by, in essence, 'doing the right thing' and following the law and exposing that the dead person was someone else.

And I don't feel like there's much reason for Ivy (or her husband) to have any real confidence in Holmes to help them anyway when his detective work is pretty much the whole reason why the guy was in danger again. And I definitely think if Ivy is clever and composed enough to not only deceive Holmes (and Watson and the police) but also to get through a very horrible incident with such composure, she'd be smart and strong-willed enough to stand up to Moriarty herself, not to destroy him somehow but to find him and employ him herself to help her fake her husband's death again but successfully this time. I totally see Moriarty doing this either purely as a job, for the money, or, more likely, because it entertains him and he finds it really amusing that Holmes is supposed to be the 'good guy' and he 'did the right thing' but then all he really did was put Douglas in danger again meanwhile Moriarty, the 'villain' is the one helping him. So many people do seem to ignore this whole thing in The Valley of Fear with Moriarty and him even sending Holmes a note, even though this idea of Moriarty being obsessed with Holmes somehow is such a common thing in the fandom. But this could fit so well as to what happens to Douglas and why Moriarty does send that note, and Ivy Douglas seems to me the kind of character who could pull this off and be the catalyst for why that happens.

Molly even made sugar cookies. As Nanea reaches for one, there’s a knock on the door. She and Molly run to answer it.

It’s Claudie and Rosemary! “Take your coats off and get comfortable!” Molly says. There’s another knock. Nanea goes to see who it is while Molly gets her guests settled.

Joss is here! As soon as Nanea brings her inside, there’s another knock on the door. As she goes back to welcome the next guest in, Nanea asks Molly, “How many people did you invite?”

“Everyone in my address book,” Molly says.

Before long, the place is packed! Everyone is talking, laughing, and munching on sugar cookies. Julie hears a familiar voice calling her name and turns to see who it is. When she sees her face, Julie runs to her and grabs her in a big hug.

It’s her best friend, Ivy Ling! Julie and Ivy haven’t seen each other in forever. It’s a Christmas miracle✨Happy holidays, everybody!

How am I supposed to use this as an excuse to talk some unwitting asker's ear off about my dead android babies when I've already talked your ear off about my dead android babies? Anyway for everyone who isn't Aub, I have this headcanon that Douglas Davenport from Lab Rats has eight more android kids that died before the start of the show and he just. Never bothered mentioning them. I only need one word to justify this and that word is "Daniel", but I have an entire corkboard covered in red string anyway, and also names and personalities and relationships and deaths for them all. One of these days I will write up a proper post about them, but for now here is a snippet:

The night Mr. Davenport’s latest project glitched, for example, and Bree found herself superspeeding across the island to drag Marcus from his pod. He looked out at her, disoriented and groggy from being half-charged, blinking sleepily. “Ivy?” he mumbled, face twisting in soft confusion. “Why’re you doing—” And then he blinked again and—maybe if the power grid had been working, and there had been light, Bree would have seen something hard come over his face, something sad come into his eyes. Maybe if her students hadn’t been trapped behind a malfunctioning door, and water wasn’t leaking in from half a dozen spots, and they hadn’t really needed another person capable of making forcefields, now. Maybe she would have stopped to ask what he was talking about. But as it was, he stopped talking abruptly, and she grabbed his arm and sped them both back to the others. By the time they got everything fixed, Bree was too tired to do anything besides fall into her capsule, even think. And in the morning she completely forgot to wonder what “ivy” meant.

So I listened to the radio version of The Valley of Fear. The past storyline, I liked that much better than the 'present day' part to be honest.

Why do they not like Moran in this version, they made him of little importance before (and the fact that I can remember nothing about him in their version of The Empty House or even listening to most of that says a lot about how blandly they must have portrayed him), they didn't even use his name in this. There's one mention of 'the colonel' but they cut almost all the description about him. There's the bit about his salary and that was it. They cut out everything that implies Moran and Moriarty are friends, that they're alike in any way, that they are close, or that Moran is of any more importance to Moriarty than any of his other employees. They also cut some of the stuff about Moriarty, like where's the Greuze reference, hmm? It got replaced with some vague reference to him having valuable art instead. Or where's the stuff about him using light and shadow, hmm? There are these details that do build Moriarty's character in the canon but unless I got so bored by it I zoned out when they referred to them, they're just missing here which makes Moriarty feel very bland as well.

It is pretty funny though that Ronald Pickup is Moriarty in this since I said ages ago I could see him as Moriarty's dad (no I didn't know he'd ever played Moriarty then).

I don't get the thing about 'Moriarty can't afford to be linked to a failure' or he 'can't tolerate untidiness', far more so than in the canon. Why would Moriarty care if Douglas lived or died? Watson literally points out in this that the Scowrers had their own assassin and Moriarty wasn't employed to kill Douglas. He did exactly what he was employed to do (just locate Douglas). It was the other people who'd employed him who screwed up and their assassin who got himself shot dead instead so how would that be seen as a failure on Moriarty's part? Why would he kill a man he didn't know or care about and wasn't being paid to get rid of? It doesn't make sense. If anything this version makes me even more inclined to believe that Moriarty faked Douglas's death (successfully); he didn't owe his american employers anything after he'd located Douglas for them.

Also I felt like Holmes came across as even more callous towards Porlock in this than he does in the canon (and I do feel even there he seems fairly indifferent at best about what happens to Porlock). It felt like once Porlock had provided him with something of interest he didn't care at all what happened to him after that.

I was kind of disappointed by Ivy too, I love Ivy and I love that she manages to deceive both Holmes and Watson initially but she just sounded a bit, well, insipid in this too.

Kathy’s first trip into the wasteland lasted several hours and she was poorly armed with a weak, frequently useless weapon and no stimpaks. She returned with goodies in hand that were dispersed amongst the people of the vault, and when she was sent out again she was armed with a handful of stimpaks, a cattle dog and a better weapon.

We became apprehensive when less than three hours later she was not answering radio calls.

We were uncertain as to her fate. Was she trapped? Was she busy nuking mutants across the wasteland? We’ve grown so quickly to expect so much of her.

You can imagine our surprise when the cattle dog returned with gear in tow and no Kathy. We are uncertain if her quick demise was a fluke, or her extended survival in her first trek rendered her overconfident and careless. Her loss is a massive blow to the vault’s tentative survival, and the effects can be felt.

Emma Crawford and Mark Ford had a son, Benjamin, however with the vault’s growing needs has Benjamin working in the power room with his parents.

Benjamin has become quite smitten with one of the ladies in the Diner now that he is grown- a woman named Helen Cox. They are presently expecting their first child.

Mark and Emma still appear rather fond of each other, and given we need more members of the vault this attachment is encouraged. We just wish that Mark would hurry things up, and not take so long to seduce Emma that 3 different raider attacks occur before she becomes pregnant. Emma is clearly putting forth the effort to make things happen.

Dr Li is a recent addition to the vault who has been instrumental to the survival of the whole. While her lab is at the bottom of the vault, she is experienced enough with wasteland life that she does not hesitate to attack raiders who invade the vault. She has saved the other dwellers countless times over, either actively by preventing their violent deaths, or her tireless work in the medbay to heal their injuries.

She is assisted by one Douglas Sanders, whose special stats dont make him of any particular use to Dr Li, however at the moment beggars cannot be choosers.

Emma successfully delivers a little girl- a dire addition needed to the vault. Weve done the numbers and of the 17 current members, only 4 are women- with Madison, that number will grow to 5 as she ages. A 12:5 ratio is not ideal for the continued growth of the vault, but the numbers we have are the numbers we work with. Dr Li’s work is too instrumental to risk her becoming unable to engage in enemy contact, so at this time having her become pregnant is not an ideal situation. Emma and Helen are the only dwellers to have children, although we are awaiting Helen’s first arrival. It is uncertain at this time if Tiffany has her eye on anyone.

Madison Ford appears to have a wander’s spirit, and it is our hope as she ages that she will be successful out in the wasteland where Kathy failed. Now that Dr Li is here to supervise vault endeavors, we will keep closer tabs on her when the time comes to send her out.

"Sometimes" whispered Ophelia, "He used to be, but he hasn't been much of a funny guy in a few years, at least not sober. He can be like this when he's drunk." she'd reported.

"A concussion, oh how fun." He commented. "I haven't no, my brother has. No screens right?" he groaned as she told him his injuries looked worse on the exterior. "Lucky me." He groaned. "Thank you for not bringing me to the hospital. We don't get along much." He looked over at his sister who gave him a saddened look, which he looked away from.

Jesus Christ. Ivy thought as she listened to his responses and the machine whirling to life. "Not NASA but you were on ice." She looked at his sister with a strained smile as she spoke in hushed tones "Is he joking? Is that just his personality?" When Ivy looked at the images she let out a relieved sigh. There were no bleeds and no fractures. "All right, Bud, let's get you out of the machine and have a chat."

With some effort Callum was moved to a bed and passed a bottle of water. "You definitely have a serious concussion. Have you had one before or should I walk you through symptoms and treatment while I stitch up this cut? You're pretty lucky. It all looks worse than it is."

So I dragged myself out of bed early to go volunteer on a habitat restoration project at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge in SE Portland. We spent much of the time planting some twinberry honeysuckle (Lonicera involucrata), Douglas' spirea (Spirea douglasii), Sitka willow (Salix sitchensis) and Scouler's willow (Salix scouleri). Then we wrapped things up with some removal of invasive English ivy (Hedera helix) and Himalayan blackberry (Rubus armeniacus). I forgot to take any pictures except for this nice inundated wetland shot on my way to the site, but it's only because I was having so much fun! I really love doing this sort of thing; someday if I can buy a house I want to overhaul the yard and get Backyard Habitat certification just because.
